As with many immigrants, Edgar was challenged immediately by language and educational barriers which prevented him from advancing beyond the restaurant and construction work he took on during the early stage of his career. Although he knew this was not where he wanted to be, since he had to work multiple jobs just to make ends meet, he didn’t have time to enroll in school and study.

Finally in 2014, a relative told Edgar about the variety of courses available at CEWD, so he renewed his determination and enrolled in evening ESOL classes with an eye towards obtaining his GED.

Besides making the coursework very interesting, Professor Ortiz encouraged him to continue as new doors would open which would otherwise be unobtainable without a GED. Edgar completed his GED in 2015. Still wanting to pursue college, Edgar applied for and was accepted in the CLIP program starting Spring, 2016. Once again, finances got in the way, and this time he had no other recourse but to find full-time work. Then, in 2019, Edgar became a father, and he had to make a serious decision about the direction of his life. Once again, he returned to CEWD. This time, he would enroll in the Dental

The year 2021 is marked by the global pandemic-COVID-19, a life event that continues to challenge our thinking and the way we behave. What we do or not in 2022 will shape the years ahead.

Nevertheless, we are initiating with optimism. We have renewed and continued funding and new promising partnerships with increased opportunities for New Yorkers to continue to engage in personal, educational and professional development courses and programs.

With that said, we are delighted to announce Evelyn Fernández Ketcham as the newly appointed Vice President, Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development. Before assuming this new position, Vice President Fernández-Ketcham had been Executive Director of the Continuing Education and Workforce Development Division since 2013. During her ten-year tenure as Executive Director of Workforce Development, Vice President FernándezKetcham has helped secure and manage over $13 million dollars in grants for programs from the Department of Labor/Employment & Training, U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Department of Youth & Community Development, and Capital One Foundation to name a few.

To respond to the needs of our residents and New York City at large, we kick off 2022 with initiatives for individuals to advance their education and upskill for work: =

The Hostos MacKenzie Scott Scholarship for Adult and Continuing Education (ACE) will scholarship $1,000 dollars for up to 25 students to matriculate at Hostos.

CUNY’s NYC Accelerated Workforce Recovery HUB, a joint effort with LaGuardia Community College, funded by New York Community Trust will offer 200 scholarships at Hostos and 200 at LaGuardia for respective community members to enroll in occupational training courses in industries such as health care, information technology, education, professional and human services. See page 48 for offerings.

Hostos / Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) Train and Earn Career Pathways Program) will train 36 emerging adults in the healthcare sector as Patient Care Technicians (PCT) and Clinical Medical Administrative Assistants (CMAA). See pages 18 and 20 for course schedules.

The Career Success – Helena Rubinstein Scholarship provides recipients with up to 90% of tuition costs for continuing education certificate programs. Scholarship applicants may be those individuals who are unemployed or seeking a career change. Scholarships are awarded on a semester basis.

First Course NYC focuses on getting New Yorkers into Line Chef positions at mid to high-end restaurants throughout the city through an 8-week intensive training program. Trainees will then embark on a 6-week apprenticeship at various restaurants brokered by the NYC Food & Beverage Commission. In partnership with NYC Small Business Services SBS), CEWD was awarded $862,000 to run three cohorts of 25-28 trainees, each in 2022.

Certified Home Health Aide Training and English as a Second Language (ESL) Program, funded through the Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IELCE) Grant, trains and certifies individuals as bi-lingual Home Health Aides through Elara Caring. See pages 13,19 & 53 for more information.

Through these initiatives and others, our goal is to increase success by helping students save time and money. All students will be supported as they transition in their journey to life-long learning.

The Division continues to maintain and build relationships with business and industry, governmental agencies, community organizations and workforce partners while ensuring quality and relevance to all our programs.

The Montefiore Health System/Hostos Community Health Workforce Initiative: Scaling Community Healthcare Workers (CHW) in New York State will hire 20 CHW apprentices to expand Hostos New York State Department of Labor (DOL) Community Healthcare Worker registered apprenticeship program. The goal is to scale up the training capacity and deployment of 245 certified CHWs in New York state by 2025. =

General Equivalency Diploma (GED®) As of January 2022, the General Equivalency Diploma GED® has replaced the State High School Equivalency diploma (HSE).The GED ® test is made up of 4 subjects including Math, Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts.

General Equivalency Diploma Credit for Qualifying Regents Examination Scores As of April 25, 2018, the New York State Education Department provides an additional pathway to earn a New York General Equivalency Diploma GED® by allowing eligible GED® examinees to use passing scores on certain Regents Examinations in place of corresponding GED® subtests. English for Speakers of Other Languages / ESOL Improve your English language skills with our comprehensive offering of English classes. With basic, intermediate and advanced level courses available, instruction will target the four basic skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) to help you improve pronunciation, build fluency and gain confidence in the language. You must be at least 16 years old to register.

Certified Home Health Aide Training and English as a Second Language (ESL) Program This FREE program is designed to provide beginners and/or low intermediate English language learners with the knowledge, practical skills, certification and English language skills required to become Certified Home Health Aides (HHAs).

HHAs assist patients in the activities of daily living and provide basic routine care. American Sign Language

English Links is an intensive 200-hour English as a Second Language program for learners who already have a basic knowledge of English. The program is designed to prepare students for academic and professional success.

An integrated skills approach is utilized with listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar components. Students learn how to communicate their ideas effectively, interact using academic discourse and apply their language skills to different situations and audiences for greater understanding and engagement.

Be a more powerful communicator and learn the art of American Sign Language, the third most used language in the world. This course will introduce you to the deaf culture by developing your ASL skills and providing you with an appreciation for the language used by deaf/hearing impaired people. You will learn sign vocabulary, expressive/receptive finger spelling skills, ASL grammar, facial/gestural expressions and conversational styles. Students will be encouraged to participate in group discussions, class activities and presentations.

Students will conduct informational interviews, participate in class discussions and presentations, as well as attend content based field trips where English language skills learned in class will be utilized and applied to real life situations. A mandatory screening test is required prior to registration.

Phlebotomy Technician Certificate This introductory course on the basic procedures used for obtaining blood from veins and capillaries is available to students who have a current NYS Certified Nurse Aide certificate, RN or LPN license. Students will learn the skills and responsibilities of the professional phlebotomist. Topics include standard precautions, collecting blood specimens for diagnosis and treatment, performing capillary punctures and more. Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA) The Clinical Medical Assistant program combines 136 hours of classroom training along with 120 hours externship to prepare students for employment as professional Clinical Medical Assistants dedicated to patient care management. Graduates of the program will be equipped to assist physicians with examinations, treatments, take medical histories, vital signs, phlebotomies, ekg’s and other clinical procedures. In addition, two hours of class time will be dedicated to improving math skills relevant to the program.

Students will also learn the basic medical laws and ethics as they relate to OSHA and the HIPAA standards that ensure in the work place and patient privacy. The goal is to develop competent entry level medical assistants in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills) and affective (behavior) learning domains.

Graduates will receive a certificate from Hostos after completing 120 externship hours. Students will also earn up to 2 college credits that can be applied toward an Associate Degree in Business/Office Technology (see page 8 for details).

Dental assistants perform a variety of tasks including patient care, taking and processing x-rays and scheduling appointments. This course will familiarize students with the pre-clinical area, the history of dentistry and the many functions of the dental office.

Dental Assistant Certificate Program

Students will learn about the oral cavity and related structures, how to prepare patients for various types of dental treatments, clean and sterilize dental instruments and assist the dentist and/or dental hygienist by performing tasks such as using suction devices, properly noting dental charts and dealing with emergency situations. This program is ideal for students seeking entry-level employment as Dental Assistants while pursuing a career as a Dental Hygienist.

Dental Front Office Administration with Billing & Coding Certificate Program This course prepares students for an administrative position in the dental front office. Learn basic administrative functions from composing and typing letters to managing office projects. Students will be introduced to dental terminology and the anatomy of the oral cavity in order to properly document dental charts and gain an understanding of dental services provided, as they relate to billing and coding to insurance companies.

Learn to maintain accounts receivable, accounts payable and financial records for the dental practice. Gain job search strategies while building your skills for employment. Included in the course is 1 hour remedial math. Tuition includes textbook.

Local Anesthesia & Nitrous Oxide Administration Certificate Program The Department of Dental Hygiene at Hostos offers the Local Anesthesia/Nitrous Oxide Analgesia Certificate Program in compliance with New York State law, in order to facilitate the NYS licensed dental hygienist's application for a Restricted Certificate in Local Infiltration Anesthesia/Nitrous Oxide Analgesia. Registered Dental Hygienists are now permitted, under the direct supervision of a dentist, to administer intra oral and infiltration anesthesia or nitrous oxide analgesia to patients 18 years of age or older.

This 45 hour fully approved course satisfies the didactic and clinical requirements for certification. The course will also include 2 classroom hours dedicated to improving English and vocabulary skills to ensure success in the field. Upon successful completion of the course, the dental hygienist will be able to apply for certification through the NYS Education Department. Clinical skills practice will require students to participate as a patient and operator. Individuals who are pregnant or have uncontrollable high blood pressure are

precluded from participating in this course. All students are required to take and record blood pressure and follow infection control standards. Full attendance will be required for both didactic and clinical classes. The state exam fee is not included in the tuition.

Medical Administrative Assistant (MAA) Certificate Program This program is designed to provide students the knowledge and skills required to perform the administrative functions of an entry level medical assistant in a variety of healthcare settings such as, medical offices, clinics and ambulatory care facilities.

Students will learn how to manage patient scheduling, maintain patient records, perform billing and coding duties, assist physicians with examinations and prepare patients for laboratory and diagnostic imaging procedures.

Case Management Certificate

The role of the HIV Counselor is to enhance the well-being of people impacted by HIV. Students will obtain skills to identify high risk populations and manage barriers by effectively linking clients to appropriate resources.

The HIV Counselor course requires 40 didactic classroom education hours, plus 80 hours of clinical experience. Recovery Coach Program Recovery Coaches support positive change by helping individuals re-entering society from treatment or the criminal justice system. Our goal is to assist in the avoidance of relapse, the building of community support for recovery and cultivating life goals such as relationships, work and education. Focusing on building the client’s strengths, coaches do not address past traumas, but rather provide expertise on future achievement. Similar to Life and Business Coaching, Recovery Coaching (also known as peer mentoring), provides assistance to clients in accessing clinical services. Recovery Coaching is non-clinical and does not involved the diagnosis or treatment of addiction or any mental health issues, as is the case for licensed addiction counselors.

Central Sterile Processing Program The program curriculum is designed to prepare individuals for the field of Sterile Processing and Central Service Supply. Students will develop skills necessary to properly disinfect, prepare, process, store, and issue both sterile and nonsterile supplies and equipment for patient care. Students will also learn to operate sterilizing units and monitor effectiveness of the sterilization process. The program is comprised of three Modules.

Module One - Introduce the primary responsibility of a Central Sterile Processing Technician. Emphasis is placed on preparation, storage and distribution of instruments, supplies and equipment, quality assurance and inventory management. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate competence in sterile processing techniques.

Module Two - Emphasis is placed on basic human anatomy, infection control, aseptic technique, sterile processing, decontamination and disinfection. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate competence in sterile processing techniques.

Module Three - Provide job seeking skills and an overview of theoretical knowledge in preparation for CRCST certification. Topics include test taking strategies, resume preparation and interviewing techniques. Upon completion, students will be able to complete a resume, demonstrate appropriate interview techniques and identify personal strengths and weaknesses in preparation for employment.

Students will also demonstrate knowledge of industry standards and practices needed to pass the CRCST exam.

Earning a CDA credential will allow you to work with infant, toddler and pre-school aged children (Birth – Age 5) in center based care or as a childcare professional. Commercial Driver’s License* A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) shows carriers and employers that you are a licensed and competent Professional Truck Driver.

Operating certain commercial motor vehicles requires specialized skills and knowledge. Class B CDL License is any single vehicle weighing 26,001 pounds or more or towing another vehicle, not in excess of 10,000 pounds, while driving only in the state in which it was issued.

40-Hour Site Safety Manager (SAF-102)

This course prepares students to pass the MetroTech computerbased-exam for the FDNY F-60 Fire Guard for Construction Site and Torch Operations Certificate of Fitness. Certificate of Fitness candidates will be prepared to pass the FDNY exam and learn the proper way to stand fire guard duty. All topics in the FDNY study guide are presented and explained. This NYC DOB approved course is a comprehensive review of the NYC building codes, DOB Local Laws and bulletins and OSHA requirements. The purpose of the course is to prepare candidates with safe job practices for New York City major buildings where 2000 cubic yards of concrete are to be poured.

Level I introduces students to locks and cylinders used in commercial and residential buildings. Troubleshoot common pin tumbler cylinder problems and simple master key systems and cross-reference key blanks. Gain hands-on experience with cam, lever, mortise and secondary locks.

Level II will have students performing master pinning and keying techniques, broken key extractions and working with mortise locks. These techniques will be applied to several brands and types of locks.

Plumbing Basics Plumbing Basics This two-part comprehensive 60-hour course will introduce students to the history of plumbing, its importance to society and the evolution of the trade, specific to New York City’s potable water systems and sanitation plants. Students will gain the knowledge of safe plumbing practices after an introduction to the materials and tools necessary to perform tasks, along with their safe storage, within guidelines.

Latin Music & Latin Jazz THE HISTORY OF

This Spring 2022 seminar series is a tribute to the history of Latin music and Latin jazz and the musicians and artists who helped create it from the 1930’s to the present.

This free seminar series will highlight the diversity of the music pioneers and their impact on the history of Latin music and jazz. Learn about the musicians and artists like Graciela, known as the First Lady of Latin Jazz, Ceila Cruz, Olga Guiott, Gloria Estefan, Enrique Jorrin, Johnny Rodriquez, Julio Gutiérrez and many others that helped create and influence the music of this time.

The series is hosted by Joe Conzo Sr., noted music historian, producer and author of Mambo Diablo: My Journey with Tito Puente. These seminars will broaden your knowledge of the genres and enlighten you as you hear and learn about the music and how it evolved from the 1930’s to now.

The seminar will focus on latin music, the jazz era and the diverse artists who were influential in creating it, including the great Tito Puente. Special guests will periodically attend throughout the seminars series.

The Tito Puente Exhibit is housed at Hostos and is available for viewing.

Hostos Community College’s Liberty Partnerships Program is a high school accredited, year-round academic and cultural enrichment program enhanced by career and support services.

The program is funded by the NY State Education Department and serves over 300 students yearly from local high schools in the South Bronx. Students are comprised of all ethnic groups, primarily Latinos and African Americans. Special attention is given to students who are at-risk of graduating late or dropping out, including those with limited English proficiency.

The program partners with CUNY, SUNY and several private universities along with community based organizations, cultural institutions and local businesses to form an innovative collaborative, united in challenging students to excel both academically and socially.

Refund/Withdrawal Request for a refund or credit must be submitted in writing together with a copy of the registration receipt. Lack of attendance does not constitute withdrawal and eligibility for a refund or credit. There will be a 100% refund if a class is cancelled by the College. Registration fees are non-refundable unless class is cancelled by the College.

Delinquent Payments The College reserves the right to withhold the privileges of class attendance, use of facilities and services and access to certificates of completion from students with delinquent payments.

.Si se matricula a dos o más clases: 5% de descuento. .Para personas mayores (de 62 años de edad o más), y jubilados Hostos: 15% de descuento.

.Para estudiantes, personal y ex alumnos de HCC que presenten una tarjeta de identificación valida: 15% de descuento.

Solamente se permite un tipo de descuento para cada persona.

Los cursos están sujetos a un mínimo de estudiantes matriculados.

Cuando se cancele algún curso, los estudiantes pueden transferirse a otro curso o recibir un reembolso total. Todo esfuerzo sera realizado para contactar a los estudiantes si la clase es cancelada.

You May Be Eligible for Tuition Assistance Many of our courses are eligible for vouchers and reimbursement through employers, Department of Veteran’s Affairs, Workforce 1 Centers, ACCES-VR and other government assistance programs.

Adult Career and Continuing Education Services - Vocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR) is available for students with disabilities. http://www.acces.nysed.gov/vr Employment Vouchers may be available through your employer.
