Wednesday, August 16, 6pm Saturday, August 19, 11am August Wednesday, June 7, 6pm Wednesday, June 28, 6pm June
One day Kacey Witter got inexplicably lost on the way to a new work assignment and exited the subway at 149th Street and Grand Concourse. “I was supposed to be going to Brooklyn!” she laughed. But the sight that greeted her as she came up the stairs remained etched in her memory: the bridge over the Concourse, the students—this was a college campus. “I didn’t even know it was Hostos at the time,” she recalled,“ and I thought it would be a dream to attend college, because I didn’t have the paperwork.”
As with many immigrants, Kacey came to New York in 2015 in pursuit of more opportunities. Born and raised in Jamaica, her mother had instilled in her the value of education; she herself had to leave school at the age of 13. “She always told me that once I got educated I could do anything,” Kacey reflected, “I share her passion for learning, and I don’t want to let her down.” Although, in the years after her arrival, obtaining that education seemed like a distant dream, Kacey never relented in self-educating herself. Working as a nanny, after putting the children to bed, she had to secretly watch YouTube videos on medical training because her employer didn’t approve. “I had to play dumb and keep a low profile,” Kacey recalled of this period, “I love maternal and women’s healthcare, so I studied things like anatomy and physiology and nursing in my downtime.”
Years after arriving in New York and being newly married, Kacey’s husband encouraged her to finally apply to college. It was while researching schools online that she came across Hostos’ website, and she recognized the bridge over the Concourse instantly. “I believe in fate,” she says, “Everything happened as it was supposed to happen.” However, in 2021, Kacey came to a crossroads. Her husband, who serves in the military, was being deployed, and so she faced a choice: move with him now and put off her education, or somehow fast-track her degree to finish within the year. It seemed impossible to pull off within the timeframe, but then things fell into place quickly.
Being a military spouse, Kacey had been working for the Veteran’s Affairs counseling center at Hostos. Her work-study supervisor, Ricardo Garcia, Hostos’ Veteran’s Coordinator, informed her of the 9-credit Community Healthcare Worker certificate program offered at the Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD). She eagerly
enrolled. Balancing a college course load, evening classes with CEWD, homework, and a daytime job was challenging, but the previous years spent at thankless jobs made this experience seem easier, by comparison.
Kacey immersed herself in her studies and classwork. She fell in love with public health matters as they offered more in-depth, preventive policy measures that can affect communities as opposed to the more one-on-one, individual patient approach found in nursing. “Women of color and their children suffer from poor or lack of healthcare, and I want to make a difference,” Kacey continued, “If we’re all on the sidelines and no one steps up, nothing will change.” She was particularly moved by Professor Segrid Renne, and it was thanks to her class that she could envision herself contributing to the field.
Kacey was able to complete her degree within the year and with a 3.9 GPA to boot. On how she managed to complete her coursework at such a high level while juggling multiple responsibilities, she smiled, “There’s a saying in Jamaica, ‘While your companion slept, you were toiling upward through the night.’” Kacey is hoping to join a substance abuse clinic, with a particular focus on women in need.
