What is Food Studies? Food studies connects food through many disciplines! The main goal of the A.S degree is to provide the necessary academic foundation to continue into 4 years Bachelor’s granting institutions. However, the education and training acquired by Food Studies graduates qualifies them to seek entry level jobs organizations related to food dispensing and distribution, food industry, food advocacy organizations, and community organizations. At Hostos we offer four areas of specialization: 1.

What is required for this major? •
To enter the program, you must be a freshmen or transfer student with 22 credits or less.

Food studies is a very broad field. Professionals in food studies often seek additional specialization to understand specific areas of food systems.
•
Areas like food production, food processing, food preparation, consumption, marketing, environmental aspects, nutrition, and food policy.
Nutrition and Health •
If your interests are within nutrition and the function of foods in the human body, then your degree will help you to meet the needs of an emerging professional in this area!
•
Nutritionists and Registered Dietitians can work in many sectors, but first must complete a comprehensive education to make appropriate recommendations for individuals or groups.
•
Nutritionists study the same pre-requisite courses as Nursing students! To become a Registered Dietitian, taking these courses at Hostos would put you one step closer to completing the bachelor’s degree!

Typical Salary: $45-55k, with RD/RDN credential $55k+
Sustainability and Food Systems •
If your interests are in the environment and the effects of food waste, food management, and understanding the ramifications of actions in the food system, then this specialization will help broaden your understanding in this area!

This field is multidisciplinary, and can draw from natural sciences and environmental justice.
•
Understanding the environmental impacts of food processing, packaging, transportation, and waste.
Food Policy and Social Issues •
If your interests are in the city’s food policies, advocating for a just food system, then this specialization will help broaden your understanding in this area!

This is an interdisciplinary field, and understanding civics and law is at the epicenter.
•
Folks who specialize in this area could begin entry-level jobs in community organizations and civic groups.
•
At a managerial level, upwards of $80k
Food Science and Technology •
If you are interested in Food Sciences, and enjoy thinking about the chemical composition of food, Food Science and Technology may be the field for you!

Jobs in this sector vary. Food scientists work on the development and delivery of food products. Food companies rely heavily on food science and technology to increase production and delivery of products to consumers.
