Ms. Bess is a Bronx native whose passion for learning and openness to new ideas has led to pivotal moments in her life. After 18½ years incarceration, the first pivotal moment came in 2019 when she met someone at her halfway house who thought she would be great as a Certified Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC). Ms. Bess had first heard hints about this career when she was behind bars but wanted to wait until her release to learn more. This same individual happened to have the contact information for Ms. Vermelle Van Duyne, who is head instructor for the Division of Continuing Education & Workforce Development’s (CEWD) counselor/case worker suite of programs, which include HIV Counselor, Case Management, Recovery Coach and Ethics Consideration certifications.
Being from the Bronx, Ms. Bess was aware of Hostos Community College’s reputation for diversity and inclusion, so she was very comfortable when she arrived to meet with Ms. Van Duyne to discuss her future. Immediately perceiving Ms. Van Duyne’s passion for education and dedication to the mission, she just knew she had to enroll in the courses. Having enrolled in the College and Community Fellowship (CCF) as well as the
I had biases and my own judgmental thoughts about how to serve people, but they instilled in me that we have to serve individuals where they are at. I had been out of the workforce for 18½ years due to my incarceration. No one judged me in the class. In fact they taught me how to embrace who I was and still be able to deliver to those in need. Today I can say that I am truly blessed to have chosen Hostos as my school of choice for this program.”
I would have not succeeded in my fields without the experiences in the classroom. Hostos Community College and the CASAC program taught me how to be a community because our classmates all looked out for each other and we wanted no man/woman left behind.”
Women Influencing Systems and History (WISH) organizations, she was determined to be a voice for those who have no voice.
Everything was going well, until Ms. Bess would come to another pivotal moment in her life. While pursuing her CASAC with Hostos, Ms. Bess was able to get employment at a sober living facility for wealthy clients. It was here that, for the first time, the disparities between how different communities receive aid for substance abuse came sharply into focus, and nearly led her to resign in anger. Thankfully, due to the mentoring imparted by Ms. Van Duyne and Mr. Khalif Hassan (CASAC instructor) she was able to stay grounded, and it is due to these two figures whom she credits for the career she has today.
Today, Ms. Bess works at the Osborne Association helping families with loved ones returning home from prison as well as still working at Release Recovery as a Peer Specialist.

THE SKILLS TO DO THE JOB
Welcome back for the Fall 2022 semester. We are here to help you find a CEWD course or certificate program that will allow you to achieve your education and/or employment goals. Students success remains our top priority and CEWD seeks to provide students with the support and resources they need to enroll and complete their course and/or certificate program.
Do you need help funding your education?
Please check out CEWD’s current scholarships and no-cost programs, which can be found by clicking here and selecting the scholarships & tuition assistance programs link in our online course catalog.
We remain committed to increasing scholarships and no-cost programs so all our students have the opportunity to achieve their goals. For example, thanks to support from The New York Community Trust, CEWD is currently offering New York City Recovery
HUB scholarships to students interested in enrolling in occupational training courses in healthcare during Fall 2022 (see page 50). Also, if you are a CEWD student or alumni enrolling in a degree program at Hostos, you can apply for the MacKenzie Scott Scholarship for Adult and Continuing Education (see page 6).
An analysis of student outcomes for CEWD alumni that completed occupational training programs that led to an industry-recognized credential in Fall 2018, Fall 2019, Fall 2020, and Fall 2021, found that on average over 90% of students that completed their occupational training program successfully attained an industry-recognized credential. These CEWD graduates primarily obtained certifications in the following sectors: medical and health, construction, and education.
Get Trained. Get Hired.
Student feedback is also important to us. We want to thank the 269 CEWD students and alumni that responded to the CEWD Student Satisfaction Survey. Sixty-eight (68%) of respondents reported being very satisfied with the CEWD courses they took and 70% indicated they were very likely to recommend CEWD to friends, family, or colleagues. When asked to explain how CEWD helped them reach their employment and/or educational goals, a respondent wrote, “To enhance my skills and it helped in my promotion.
Another said,
I needed the skill set to work more efficiently.
There is still time to make 2022 count! CEWD’s Fall 2022 offerings can help you achieve your education and/or employment goals. To learn more, please sign up for a virtual information session by clicking here

INCLUSIVITY at CUNY, Hostos and CEWD
The City University of New York (CUNY), Hostos Community College (Hostos) and the Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD) welcomes, develops and advances a diverse mix of individuals. It is about making people feel valued and insuring everyone has the same opportunity to learn, advance and create change.
CUNY, Hostos and CEWD are committed to maintaining a learning and working environment that is free of bias, prejudice, discrimination and harassment - an environment that supports, nurtures and rewards educational and career advancement based on ability and performance. People are treated fairly and with respect.
Hostos is committed to ensuring a discriminatory free environment, where all persons are treated fairly and with respect regardless of their protected status. The Office of Compliance and Diversity (“OCD”) is dedicated to promoting an open and inclusive environment, addressing complaints as they arise, creating initiatives which support diversity and awareness and ensure that the college complies with all applicable policies and laws.
