Student Spotlight: Jinnette Ramirez
“ “
Hostos went above and beyond to make sure everything was secure for me. They were always there. Hostos made me feel heard.
Jinnette Ramirez is dedicated to helping and advocating for others who need it and her educational and professional journey reflect this passion. She started her educational trajectory at CUNY’s Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) earning her associate’s degree. Jinnette A passion of mine is continued at CUNY’s John to genuinely be a voice Jay College of Criminal for those who don’t Justice but realized criminal have a voice. justice was not where her interests lay. In 2022, after learning about the Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development’s (CEWD) Hostos Recovery HUB Scholarship Program from a program manager at the New York Urban League during a Workforce 1 Job Fair, she applied and was awarded a scholarship, a project funded by New York Community Trust. Jinnette was able to enroll in CEWD’s Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (MAA) program at no-cost to her. In August 2022, she successfully obtained her MAA Certification.
”
”
This opportunity ignited Jinnette’s desire to pursue a career in the healthcare sector. In April 2023, she returned and successfully completed CEWD’s Certified Billing and Coding Specialist and CPR/AED certificate programs. Jinnette noted the support she received from Hostos CEWD staff and instructors helped her successfully complete each training program. CEWD’s Career Services staff also helped Jinnette prepare for the interview process and polish her resume. As a result of obtaining the three certifications and the job preparation services CEWD provided, Jinnette started working simultaneously at the NYC Health & Hospitals and DocGo, a telehealth company primarily catering to asylum seekers. She is currently working as a patient administrator at DocGo. Hostos continues to play a crucial role in Jinnette’s academic and professional journey. She is currently enrolled in the Radiologic Technology Associate’s Degree Program at Hostos. After completing her associate’s degree, Jinnette plans to work as an MRI or ultrasound technician at a hospital.

Employer Spotlight: DocGo DocGo is a healthcare company committed to providing high quality and affordable medical services outside of traditional hospital and hospital settings DocGo employs their innovative proprietary technology and a mobile/remote team of certified and trained healthcare professionals, catering to populations that are excluded from the rigid traditional healthcare system. DocGo has been a partner of NYC Health + Hospitals since 2021, providing clinical and social services to the New York’s unsheltered population wherever they need. In 2023, the City contracted DocGo to extend their services to the growing number of migrants seeking asylum within NYC. This would include the provision of transportation, meals, vaccination and mental health screenings, along with clinical care. Jinnette Ramirez says of her experience as a DocGo patient administrator, “Working with DocGo has been especially rewarding. The supervisors and coworkers are from diverse backgrounds, so I’m able to learn a lot. I get to lend an ear to people from different backgrounds, all while using my Spanish language skills to assist them. And even though I can’t do much right now, it reminds me of why I wake up in the morning and go to work.”

Peer Specialists support positive change by helping individuals re-entering society from treatment or the criminal justice system. Our goal is to assist in the avoidance of relapse, the building of community support for recovery and cultivating life goals such as relationships, work and education. Focusing on building the client’s strengths, coaches do not address past traumas, but rather provide expertise on future achievement. Similar to Life and Business Coaching, Peer Specialists (also known as peer mentoring), provide assistance to clients in accessing clinical services.
