Friday October 10th: Multilingual Students and Communication of Writing Skills In this seminar, we will discuss the types of multilingual students we service and how we can be culturally aware and considerate of the specific needs they exhibit in a session. We will also describe effective ways to explain grammar skills and writing concepts that help multilingual students increase English proficiency in writing. To prepare for this seminar, tutors will read Chapter 9 off The Allyn and Bacon Guide to Tutoring and participate in a grammar instruction contest for grammar rules that pose a challenge to multilingual writers. The tutor/coordinator that submits the most lucid explanation of the grammar concept will have the opportunity to present a mini-lesson during the seminar. Friday, November 7th: Expectations Of the Hostos Writing Center We will discuss the responsibilities of a tutor/ coordinator as it relates to the work environment of the Center. We will look at behaviors that honor staff boundaries and a healthy work atmosphere and those that diminish the professionalism of the Center. How can we maximize efforts to create a space where staff and students thrive? Friday, December 5th: Components of a Session: Balancing Tutor and Student Roles A good tutoring session is about the tutor figuring out how to explain less and get the student to learn more. We will examine the boundaries of tutors through the approach of minimalistic tutoring . To discuss the Center’s tutoring philosophy , we will look at the art of questioning, customer service, and beginning and ending a session.
