MOTOR MOUTH
A
GETTIN’ MILESTONED
s I sit here and type this, I have now spent a decade riding the desk and writing features for Hot Bike magazine. Wow, 10 years at the same job is an insane thing to achieve. Especially when it’s me we are talking about. I remember my first day on the job. The late, great Courtney Hallowell (my boss at the time) informed me that we would be shooting photos of the new H-D Ultra—well, he would be shooting and I would be riding. Mind you that I was a “chopper guy,” and the biggest bikes I had ever ridden were a 1976 Shovelhead and my newly acquired 2005 Springer Softail Classic. To make a long story short, I rode up a single-lane twistybut-narrow road, and when I went to turn it around I of course tapped the front brake and tipped the bike over on its primary side. Thinking I was going to get ridiculed, reprimanded, or even fired from my half-a-day-old job, I summoned the strength to get the 1,000-pound bike right-side-up just about a split second after it all happened. Luckily there was a bend in the road and nobody actually saw me dump the bike. I never told anyone that before. So please keep it a secret. I initially didn’t even want the job but took it due to the fact that my daughter was a few months old and I needed more stability in my life than an “independent public relations specialist” self-employed tattooed dirtbag could muster. In
short, I did it for the corporate-level insurance I felt I needed for my daughter and wife at the time. As we all know now, even the best company insurance sucks, but by the time I found that out I was so in love with my job that I would have paid them for me to work there. Much has changed over the past two nickels of service to this title. I am now the top dog on the Hot Bike roster and have a great crew of people I work with who I can’t say enough about. Most paper magazines have been declining over the past few years, but Hot Bike is actually holding steady and showing growth in that area. Our website and social media continues to shatter all records, even in these tough times, and we reach millions of riders and custom-bike enthusiasts daily with our bike features, tech stories, new products, events, and wacky videos! Yes, I know I have a dream job, and I never take it for granted. I have gotten to see the world on two wheels, meet thousands of great people, ride and write about the most amazing motorcycles on the planet, and basically do what I love for a living. Not too bad for Anaheim, California, biker trash, huh? I can truthfully say that is because of you the readers/fans/followers of Hot Bike that I have this job. And I can’t ever thank you enough for that. So pat yourselves on the back and turn the page ’cause there’s a ton of good stuff in this issue. HB JEFF G. HOLT EDITOR IN CHIEF

EDITOR’S NOTE
DYNAS ARE DEAD O
kay. Dynas aren’t really dead, but I got your attention didn’t I? For the past couple of years, it hasn’t been a secret the popularity of Dyna/FXRs is at all-time high. So what’s going to be next? Trying to find the next trend is like trying to do a psychic reading when you’re not a clairvoyant. If you keep making enough general statements and happen to get one right, boom! You have just predicted the future. Ron Harris from Chop Docs in Florida has been telling me for years that the next big trend in Vtwins is going to be Evo Softails. I think
he just might be right, and here’s why: The start of any trend depends on an overabundance of inexpensive bikes in the used market. Everyone wishes they could go out and buy a brand-new bike cash and then double the investment with accessories and shop work. For most working stiffs, a motorcycle is something extra, a luxury, or a hobby with limited funds available to upgrade. FXRs are now super popular on the used market and commanding over-inflated prices. There are still plenty of cheap used Dynas available, and despite my column title, that trend will continue for a while.
Evo-powered Softails are not especially cool or hard to find at the moment. That is the biggest key factor to making them the next big trend. Also, the Evo motor is a time-tested powerplant and has an enormous amount of aftermarket support and extensive knowledge base for modifications. Whether it’s a street screamer or boulevard cruiser, you can make this motor just about anything you want it to be. Lean toward the milder side and a solid-built Evo motor will provide you a lifetime of reliable service that can keep you riding on the road more than wrenching in the garage.

already, so as of today there are no rules for what the cool-guy bike is supposed to be. As 2017 kicks off a new year of customs, there’s my prediction for the next 12 to 24 months. I doubt this will be a drastic changing of the guards but will be more of a gradual migration to something slightly different. Time will tell if I’m correct, but if I’m not, I’ll just make up some other prediction like a cheap, fake psychic. Ha!

The styling of the Softails is also subject to a wide variety of choices. I myself prefer the slammed lowrider style that fits perfectly with this model. Classic Impalas are still built with small-block Chevy motors, and an Evo in a Vicla sits just as fine. Look back at custom bikes just five to 10 years ago and you’ll quickly find an unlimited amount of ways to hot rod a Softie for some serious street or strip running. The guide book for Softails has been written, printed, and burned

DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS. Passionate, motivated, fun. WHAT DO YOU RIDE? Too many bikes. Sportster Scrambler with a big bore, 1966 Triumph Bobber, BMW R1200GS, 1973 Honda CB750 Café, 1941 Knucklehead Chopper. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST BIKE? Yamaha PW50 was my first dirt bike. My first street-oriented bike was the 1966 Triumph Bobber. WHAT IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE BIKE? I’d have to say my Triumph because I put it together with Denny Berg when I was still in high school. It has sentimental value. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO WORK IN THE MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY? I was raised around bikes because of my dad, so I naturally took to the business. There are a ton of great people in this industry, and I’m definitely lucky to be a part of it. WHAT DO YOU THINK THE FUTURE OF THE MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY IS? Well, the future requires more young people like myself to get on bikes and realize what it’s all about. I’m seeing a huge increase in my friend group who never had an interest in bikes, now wanting to buy Sportsters, Triumphs,

“THERE ARE A TON OF GREAT PEOPLE IN THIS INDUSTRY, AND I’M DEFINITELY LUCKY TO BE A PART OF IT.” etc. I think if things keep moving in this direction, things should be good for the industry. I also think that brands like Harley-Davidson have realized that this demographic is extremely important in order for them to stay in business, and it’s obvious just by looking at their current marketing campaign. But the issue is that new Harleys, at least the ones that I’m interested in, are still not attainable financially.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU? Definitely the auto industry. I’m a classic car nut, and it seems that all of the cool trends that start in the car business eventually make it over to the motorcycle business.
WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST LIFE ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR? Probably graduating college. I really don’t like school.
ANY LAST WORDS? Thank you for the opportunity to share some of my info, and keep up the good work! HB
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST REGRET TO DATE? Not going out of state for college.

BUILDING BIKES TO BEAT CANCER

T
he instruction manual “How to Build a Custom Dyna” has officially been written. It seems every bike submitted lately has the same cookie-cutter look and style. As we point a finger at all the similar builds being submitted, four are pointed back right at us for continuing to show the same style of bikes. That’s what drew us to this down-and-dirty Dyna from the one-and-only T-Rod’s Speed Shop. With its raw and simplistic approach to the build, it was refreshing to see something different come our way and with an inspiring story to boot. This bike wasn’t originally started in T-Rod’s shop. It started in a different shop, until the builder became stricken with cancer. “It started out as a project that was half built,” T-Rod explained. “Jeff Bressler had a shop called American Performance. He was diagnosed with stage-four cancer in his blood and had to close down his shop. The only person he trusted to finish the bike was myself. He sent Kevin, the owner of the bike, to my shop as a roller with nothing on it.” For a lifelong bike builder like Jeff, not being able to finish a build is one of the worst things to happen. T-Rod knew this and even though Jeff couldn’t be present in the day-to-day process, he was very much still part of the build. “I was on the phone with Jeff as I started putting the bike together,” T-Rod said. “Jeff

FOREFRONT | 2009 DYNA would call me from the chemo chair. Even though he closed his shop, I wanted to make him still part of something. Anything to get his mind off the horrible monster that cancer is and to focus on things he loves. I grabbed his ideas and added my own touch. We wanted to do something that wasn’t too flashy, so all the metal work was brushed metal with a clear to make it look more industrial.” Creating a panel in just paint can be done with masking off a line. T-Rod showed the right way to create panels, out of metal. “The stock gas tank sides were cut out,” he said. “And hammered and recessed in.” To keep with bare-bones concept, the bike was stripped of all its electronics and taken back to the bare essentials. “I took the whole harness, threw it away, and made a new one,” T-Rod continued. “We ditched the fuel injection and replaced it with a 42mm Mikuni. By not having injection we still wanted performance. Now if we make modifications we don’t have to download a new map. I like to have control, not a computer. It can be done. I’m a minimalist. Even the paint we just did flat-black panels with a little bit of gold pinstripe and brushed look. Paint can take away from the build and turn it into a clownlooking bike. Less is more.” Normally these type of stories have sad endings but not in this case. “Jeff eventually beat the cancer,” T-Rod shared. “He was still able to help build and be creative during the toughest time. I think Jeff, me, and God had his hand on this one. Builders like us eat, breathe, and sleep bikes. You take that away and you’re giving a death sentence. Thanks to Kevin, the owner of the bike, for letting us do what we need to do and being so understanding. And f—k cancer.” HB

rom the very beginning, the things we knew we wanted on the bike were a stainlesssteel single downtube frame, Knucklehead engine, springer front end, X-pipe exhaust, and dual 19-inch wheels. Aside from those things we weren’t worried about the rest of the individual parts. We knew if we had those components, everything else would come together just the way we wanted—and they sure did. We started building the bike in December of 2015. We made 100 percent of the stainless frame minus the axle plates. The axle plates we bought from Harlot Cycles, which were then retrofit to fit a mechanical brake. Once the frame was complete, we borrowed a “Peashooter” H-D front end from our buddy Tom, which was used for mock-up until we finished the rest of the bike. The fine folks at Coker Tire
were extremely gracious and gave us both of the tires, which really set the look of the bike off well. Since we knew we wanted to run an X-pipe, we had to relocate the oil tank, hence we ended up going with the split tanks. The left tank is oil and the right is gasoline. The rear fender is off a K-model Sportster that we ended up narrowing. Once the tins were complete, we built the stainless exhaust. The exhaust and narrow split tanks really gave the bike an aggressive stance, which led to the stainless seat cowl. The controls were designed and made in-house. The floorboards were designed by us, but our friend Dustin (@the.pilgrimage) CNCmachined them. The last thing we made was the stainless springer front end. Every individual piece on the front end is stainless and handmade. Nothing was cast. All the pieces were machined and fabricated then sandblasted to give it a cast look. We
were trying to create a similar style front end to a Harley-Davidson Peashooter but with some Prism flair. For the paint, we knew we wanted a dark base color to help offset the sandblasted finish on the springer and the frame. Our good friend Travis (Tuki) mixed up a bluish green color of his own, and it fits the bike so perfectly. We couldn’t decide if we wanted gold-leaf scallops or flames, so Tuki had his own idea to create gold-leafed “sclames” (a scallop flame). We were so stoked with the final outcome of the paint. Our friend Ben hooked it up with all the powdercoating on the wheels, bars, and primary cover. Shenski polished the stainless shifter, the seat cowl, and the exhaust. The Butcher Chop fellas built the transmission, and Ben’s V-Twins in Charlotte built the engine for us. All in all we really liked how this bike came out. We hope you all do as well. HB

CAJUN POWER 165-HP ALL-MOTOR MONSTER
T
he year 2017 will be known as the year performance made a comeback. Los Angeles shop Strictly Hawgs is helping to lead the charge with builds that are full of go as well as more than enough of show. In all reality, Strictly Hawgs has always been producing performance builds and continues to dominate both underground and sanctioned races. It was no surprise when this all-motor monster was heard rumbling outside the studio walls that this build too would be nothing short of amazing.

The latest build “Cajun Power” is an S&S monster and the definition of street screamer, putting out 165 ground-pounding ponies from nothing but hard parts. Firing up this beast can only be described as sitting next to an uncapped big-block drag car with exhaust flowing through open headers. Strictly Hawgs owner Charles explains how the latest custom killer came to be: “I met bike owner ‘Two’ through a long-time customer of mine. He had been brought to my attention of a customer who lives in Louisiana that he was highly interested in a custom bagger. Prior to ever having met with Two, he was already familiar with my work. So after a short three weeks after finally meeting up, he dropped off a 2015 Road Glide. My impression was, ‘Wow, we’re getting ready to build a new bike!’ After receiving the bike, it was all downhill from there.”

Charles is no stranger to building a bike that can run as hard as it looks, and thankfully he and Two see eye to eye. “Two was all ready and knew what he wanted,” Charles said. “He did his homework and research as far as parts and performance. Two specifically wanted a performance bagger to be as fast as his sportbike. That’s what he’s used to. For the motor work, I then turned to Star Racing in Americus, Georgia. Star Racing built the motor, a 127 that makes 165 horsepower. There was no doubt this is how fast Two wanted his bike to be.” There’s nothing wrong with making a fast bike look good in our book, so Charles set out to give the bike a nice show-quality finish even sitting still (if ever). “After that, we turned our attention to the cosmetics,” Charles said. “The bike was painted by John at Dreamscape who did an amazing job with the colors. At that time is when all the Arlen Ness 10-Gauge accessories had just come out. We ordered everything in the 10-Gauge line that they had for a 2015. After having everybody complete their part, Cajun Power was born. It sure is one beautiful and powerful performance bagger that lives in Louisiana.” To see and hear this bad beast, make sure and head over to hotbike.com for a behind-the-scenes video. HB

ROAD TRIPPIN’
A CUSTOM IRONHEAD PAYS IT FORWARD
T
he bike is called “Road Trip.” It’s an homage to mentoring and the act of paying it forward. When I was first getting into building bikes, I met Lil’ Scott (Scott Sorenson) in Sturtevant, Wisconsin. I started by hanging out at his shop, asking questions, and helping out anywhere I could. Scott helped me along the way, and

as my skills improved he was always there to bounce ideas off of. Scott passed in 2015 after a battle with cancer. I started working with the “Build Milwaukee Mentoring Program” in 2014. Build Milwaukee is a moto-based mentoring program that helps children learn to work with their hands by building motorcycles. Being a part of the program
has been very rewarding. I’m proud to have helped the kids go from not knowing which end of the wrench to turn to building custom road-racing bikes that compete in shows and on the track. Road Trip was built using a vintage roadrace body along with an unattractive purple donor bike my wife bought. After much work, I’m lucky to have had help

from a great team of professionals who helped make this bike nothing short of amazing. On the paint, we gave Jayme Schmidt from Blue Moon Kustoms in Oshkosh, Wisconsin (“Osh Vegas”) free rein to do whatever he wanted. It’s the seventh paint job he’s done for me, so adding “7” on the number plate made the most sense. Calico, from Calico Hand
Painted Pinstriping, worked his magic again as well. Calico’s been striping for more than 40 years, as long as Jayme has been alive. They’re a great team, and it’s always a pleasure to work with them. Terry at Bert’s Metal Finishing in Racine, Wisconsin, made parts shiny, and Randy at First Rate Auto in Sturtevant, Wisconsin, made the seat.
One of the build alumni came back to see how this year’s class was doing. I explained to her about Road Trip and what it meant to me. We talked about how important having a mentor is and how good it feels to pay it forward by helping the next generation of builders. It’s nice to see how far Lil’ Scott’s influence has reached over the years, even now. HB JAN/FEB 2017 / 63

PANAMERICAN Project
COAST TO COAST WITH LOWBROW CUSTOMS
W
hen the S&S crew asked me if we wanted to build a custom bike around one of their powerplants, I didn’t even have to think about it. It was an idea they dreamed up along with Drag Specialties, and they offered another motor to Biltwell for the same purpose and supported the build with an array of parts from their catalogs. S&S offered us a motor of our choice, and a short time later a brandnew 93-inch S&S Panhead motor showed up at Lowbrow Customs.
ICONIC | LOWBROW CUSTOMS S&S CYCLES PANHEAD Unpacking a spotless, dialed motor out of a box is a great feeling! The plan formulated itself almost autonomously. The reliability, quality, and power the S&S P-motor offered should be paired with drivetrain, chassis, and suspension to match. Fast, agile, the ability to haul two people along with their gear, and easy to service along the road were the self-imposed criteria, all wrapped up in an understated, killer custom build unlike other bikes in the Lowbrow stable. The idea to ride the finished bike to Born-Free in California seemed like a good deadline and a good test to see if we would meet our goal. Some main components were gathered, a titled ’79 H-D Shovelhead frame was procured, most of an early 41mm Wide Glide fork was scavenged from my garage, and for wheels I reached out to Wolfgang at W&W Cycles in Germany. W&W produces the Cannonball MAG-12 wheels, based on the old American racing 12-spokes. In true German fashion, the fit and finish were perfect, and they offer a series of fitments to allow you to bolt these wheels up to most any Harley, from a mechanical drum or juice drum to disc brake. We went with 16 x 3-inch both front and rear. I had seen some old Buco bags on my friend JD of Flying Monkey Fabrication’s Panhead on El Diablo Run
68 / HOTBIKE.COM
the year before and they really stuck in my head. I loved the look and ended up finding a pair online that were in perfect shape. It seems as if they were probably kicking around on a shelf the past 50 or 60 years. The dual reflectors on each bag made perfect taillights by wiring in some 2.5-inch LED clusters. Keeping with the main plan of handling and reliability, a Baker Transmission was at the top of my list, and we scored a Baker 6-into-4. We went with Progressive shocks in the rear, as well as Progressive springs in the Wide Glide fork. Performance Machine vintage four-piston calipers front and rear ensure better stopping power (and looks) than the original banana calipers. A Gasbox bolt-in oil tank replaced the stock battery box and oil tank and cleared the primary and electric start. We also ran a Gasbox top motor mount, which houses the starter key switch, and one of their Super E carb support brackets. A stock rear fender did the job, while a set of Lowbrow WX Split Gas Tanks bolted right up in place, giving a slim and custom profile, a throwback to the narrow, split Harley WR factory racebike gas and oil tanks. The front fender is a Fatboy fender modified to fit the early Wide Glide and sit the proper height off of the tire. Biltwell Norman footpegs are
rubber coated and soften vibrations for both the rider and passenger, in addition to adding to the classic vibe, akin to the heavy-duty rubber pegs found on vintage Triumphs. Biltwell Thunder Risers hold the “Pre-Unit” handlebars bent up by Zombie Performance and sport a set of Lowbrow Knurled grips and Kustomtech controls and throttle. The EMD cast headlight bucket matched the engine cases, and the Custom Cycle Engineering cast pan covers perfectly. A Le Pera seat pan was covered by Flying Monkey Fabrication in one day—a rush job as we were down to the wire as usual and about to leave cross-country when the bike hadn’t even been broken in yet! Having eight months to build and break in a bike is great. It gives you plenty of time to not work on it at all until you realize you have to have it done in a month or so. For several months the PanAmerican was in the back of my mind, and we would discuss ideas and gather the parts, build the roller, loosely mock up some components in place. We moved our shop during this time, after months of construction, adding to the confusion and distractions.
As June and our cross-country departure grew close, I realized we needed to kick it in gear, and so we started a mad dash of assembly. Jesse Bassett and Tim Fiorucci at The Gasbox here in Cleveland helped out and nailed out fab work, including getting the exhaust to fit just right, modifying H-D saddlebag brackets to work with the Buco bags, and getting the Fatboy front fender dialed in. Ed Vanaman of Ace Powder Coating nailed out the all-black powdercoating and the black ceramic for the exhaust system in just four days and all of the paint (gas tanks, two fenders, oil tank, and Buco bags) in just a week. I jumped on final assembly using Colony Machine hard-
ware everywhere possible. I used chrome hardware on the chassis and stayed with the stock CAD-style hardware on the motor and drivetrain. We were getting on our bikes on a seven-day, 12-state trip from Cleveland, Ohio, to Orange, California, in four days, and the Pan-American was just finished. The two days before we left I rode it as much as possible, all day long. There were some minor adjustments to cables and the shift linkage, and we had to add some fluid to the front end, but it was otherwise running great. I put a few hundred break-in miles on the bike, and then we changed all the fluids. The next morning we hit the road, my wife and I on the Pan-American
and four other friends on an assortment of bikes: a Dyna, a rigid Evo Sportster chopper, a rigid Ironhead Sportster chopper, and another custom Evo Sporty. I found out a few days in that everyone had made a bet of who would break down first. Funny enough, I wasn’t in on the bet because they thought it would be me! We made more than 3,000 miles trouble-free, changing the fluids at a gas station along the way. The one and only issue I had was a broken kickstand spring. I’ll take it! Plans are to ride the Pan-American through all 50 states over the next year or two and then see where we go from there. It is a bike built for the road, and I intend to take it there. T
he Dyna scene has exploded over recent years and literally spread across the globe. As it travels across the map, each region adds its own take and in a sense dilutes and changes the dynamics. Before getting ahead of ourselves, homage must be paid to the super OGs who have been building performance Dynas and FXRs for decades. That said, there have been a select few of new builders who have been pushing the sport further each day. One such builder who has one of the most influential shops responsible for the latest look is Al Raposo from Big Al’s Cycles. Big Al, who isn’t big anymore, is not only a trendsetter in the custom Dyna world, but he’s an innovator. Al is always coming up with new and improved products, including fork braces, levers, risers, bars, chain kits, swingarms, and more. But if it’s more than parts you’re looking for, Al can put together a complete bike tip to tail using all the best components that are proven to work together. This 2001 FXDXT build is the another example of starting at the source versus a copy of a copy. Al explains how this build came to be: “I picked this bike up in Washington and brought it back to the shop to throw some of our bars and riser on and have a daily rider. After I started to tear into it on the lift, I decided that I needed to clean up a few things. Before I knew it, by the end of the day, I had the entire bike scattered across the shop with piles ready to go to paint, powdercoat, and chrome.” Here’s where Big Al’s Cycles separates itself from the average builder. Rather than reaching for a catalog, they reached for a CAD program. “During the build time we had developed many new parts that we manufacture in-house with our Hass CNC mill,” Al said. “I was so excited to slap the new parts on as soon as they came out the machine, I ended up running all of our parts in machine finish.” Al is no stranger to loud and proud paint jobs, especially with painter Schultz Designz only minutes from the shop. “I sent the paint to Schultz Designz and told him to make it ghetto and make it gangster,” he said. Finally, they added other touches of goodies, making it nothing short of a solid build. “RS Performance killed it on the powdercoat as usual. Performance Machine got me dialed in and stopping on a dime.” When it comes to the following the trends, it’s always better to start at the original. Big Al’s Cycles is one of those places that continues to be the source of those trends and not just another stop on the trend line. HB

HOW HOT BIKE BUILDS A SOFTAIL VICLA
L
ike most of our magazine builds, it all starts with a simple conversation usually over a few beers and a pretty concise plan of attack. Well, somewhere along the line the Softail you see here took a left turn and boundaries were broken, friendships tested, and deadlines were shattered.

WORDS: JEFF G. HOLT PHOTOS: MICHAEL LICHTER
My move earlier this year to Los Angeles from my lifelong residence of Orange County, California, must have had some sort of effect on me. I am also positive that my new home being very close to the famed cruising spot of Whittier Boulevard also had a large impact on how this bike came to be. It all started when I took delivery of a running but very dated special construction Softail from a friend of mine by the name of Mark Masanovitch. Little was known about the bike except that Mark rode the shit out of it before he moved on to baggerland. The bike was blue, which just so happens to be my least favorite color. When I mean it was painted blue, I
don’t mean just the tank and fenders. It was the frame, sheet metal, heads, jugs, and just about everything else. It looked like Papa Smurf built an LA Dodgers tribute bike. The blue on this motorcycle negatively affected me to the point where the bike sat for quite some time on the side of my dad’s house collecting dust and rust. This was until I received a phone call from longtime friend and colleague Michael Lichter regarding his 2016 Sturgis “Motorcycles As Art” bike show. It’s actually more of a gallery-style event, and it’s a pretty big deal with even top builders waiting their whole professional lives to be invited to it. Michael informed me that the theme of his show was to be mainly influenced by tattoos. It’s no secret that I am covered with ink literally from head to toe, so I was very intrigued by the show. And I was floored when he asked me to be part of it. Sure, I could have just taken one of my Dynas, FXRs, or even my crazy supercharged bagger, but this was quite possibly the coolest show to ever be invited to, so I wasn’t just going to put some bike thousands of people have already seen in the show.

2005SOFTAIL SOFTAIL DELUXE HEAVY METAL | 1999 During the course of the conversation, I told Michael that “just by chance” I was currently building a tattoo-themed Cholo Vicla (which was a total lie) and that it would fit perfectly in the show. After I hung up the phone with him, I knew I was in deep shit and was going to need some major help in getting this bike done in six weeks. I was going to have to pull out all the stops and use up all of the favors I have had owed to me. The term Vicla is not a new one, and for those of you who don’t know the phrase, it is Mexican slang for a Harley built in the style of a two-wheeled lowrider. This style bike of course started in East LA years ago, but it has developed into a worldwide movement with bikes of this ilk popping up all over the USA as well as in Japan and even Down Under in Australia. The next day I hit the ground running and took inventory of what was needed for the rebuild of this bike. I made a few phone calls to Harley-Davidson for a gaggle of chrome goodness, Arlen Ness for a smattering of old-school Evolution engine ball-milled billet, Kuryakyn for more chrome covers and lighting solutions, Performance Machine for brake calipers, Cobra USA for a dual exhaust with fishtail tips, Ride Wright for a set of their beautiful soft-lip fat 30-spoke wheels and matching rotors, Avon Tires for some whitewall action, and of course Sturgis’ own Legend Suspension for an adjustable air ride system in the rear. Once the hard parts were ordered I got busy on selecting the paint, powdercoat, and plating. I knew I needed to get rid of the blue on the bike, so I enlisted Jim Iiams and the crew at IMZZ Elite to blow the bike completely apart and powdercoat the frame with ample amounts of gloss black. Hot-rod builder and metal worker extraordinaire Ryan Reed was recruited to fit a 1965 Chevy Impala taillight onto the rear fender, which actually was no easy feat.

My good friend Buck Wild was the only choice to paint this bike. The guy is one of the best custom painters alive today, and the fact that he grew up in LA in the lowrider lifestyle didn’t hurt either. As you can see, the flake, pinstriping, and panel paint is really in a class by itself. I also knew I wanted a custom leathertooled seat, so I called the master Duane Ballard to get the job done. Duane and Buck teamed up on the design of the seat, and I can tell you for sure that it matched perfectly with all the insane paintwork on this bike. Once the frame was “back in black,” Jim and the crew at IMZZ Elite wasted zero time in getting the bike together,
and Jim even painted the top end of the motor candy purple to match the paint. As with most builds, we had a ton of issues in getting the bike back together with the massive amount of new chrome-plated and polished parts, and we missed the deadline to get the bike transported to Sturgis. Luckily our online editor Ed Subias was driving his racebike out there for some Hooligan action, so the Vicla and I jumped in for some road trippin’ and the bike made it to Sturgis with nary an issue and was one of the hits of the show. With a ton of help from a group of great companies and skilled craftsman, this is how Hot Bike does a Vicla. HB FOR MORE ON THIS BIKE VISIT HOTBIKE.COM

he fourth annual GEICO Hot Bike Tour yet again set the bar for all other rolling rallies and will go down as the best riding to date. The roads starting in the artistic town of Ashville, North Carolina, and ending in Chattanooga, Tennessee, were nothing short of epic with world-famous mountain ranges, twisty passes, and scenic highways all ending in historic destinations.
A record-setting 607 truly brave LongRiders made each of the stops and checked off roads, stops, and experiences from the lifetime bucket list. Another 8,712 made at least one stopto-stop ride. Each stop brought out the locals in droves with more than 28,000 fans attending the daily shows, making it the biggest five days of bikes for the region. Fans from near and far came out for the Hot Bike and Baggers invited builders, which included Bobby Seeger Jr., John Shope, Matt Harris, Pat Patterson, Ron Harris, Kyle Shorey,
Bryan Schimke, Big Joe Mielke, Tim McNamer, Irish Rick Ryan, and Scott Kietzmann on the Hot Bike side. Carey Hart, Jesse Rooke, Justin Coleman, Jake Cutler, Oscar Peralta, Zach Johnson, Nick Trask, Charlie Stockwell, Shane Phillips, and Josh Rundlett rounded up the Baggers builds. Tight venue locations limited the number of stunt shows, but that didn’t stop Grim Company and Troy Hoff from tag teaming the wheelies and burnouts to an eager crowd at Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson.

While everyone wished they could take off more than a week to get to the tour, attend all five stops, and ride home, sometimes that’s not a reality. Even us editors have obligations preventing us from taking that much time off. This year, Editor John Zamora decided to minimize the away time and rented a 2016 Dyna from EagleRider. After flying into nearby Nashville, John found his bike waiting at the hotel gassed up and ready to run. After the weeklong ride, he returned the bike and was quickly on the next plane home. y now Harley’s new MilwaukeeEight motor has made its way not just to the showroom but also to the street. Some of you are busily enjoying the new toy; here in magazineland we’ve had our share of fun abusing it as best we can.
The Motor Company dubbed the new powerplant Milwaukee-Eight. I hesitate to describe the new-generation powerplant as just a motor though. To hear H-D tell it, Milwaukee-Eight sounds more like an internal combustion symphony conducted by throttle twisting. That’s because the overall goal wasn’t just improving motor performance. Harley looked long and hard at truly upgrading its touring experience, targeting noise reduction, heat reduction, suspension comfort, and—oh, yeah—motor performance to boot. Before we go any further though, let’s take a look at what’s new with this killer motor.
JAN/FEB 2017 / 89
TESTED | HARLEY’S NEW MILWAUKEE-EIGHT MOTOR
MILWAUKEE-EIGHT VS. TWIN CAM: 10 DIFFERENCES 1. BAGGERS ONLY: At least, for now. New Milwaukee-Eight engines will power every 2017 Harley-Davidson Touring and Trike motorcycle model. The Milwaukee-Eight will be offered in two displacements and three variations: Milwaukee-Eight 107 (107 CID, 1,750cc) featuring precision oil-cooled cylinder heads for the Street Glide/Street Glide Special, Road Glide/Road Glide Special, Electra Glide Ultra Classic, Road King/ Road King Classic, and Freewheeler models. There’s a Twin-Cooled Milwaukee-Eight 107 (107 CID, 1,750cc) featuring liquid-cooled cylinder heads for the Ultra Limited/Ultra Limited Low, Road Glide Ultra, and Tri Glide models. A Twin-Cooled Milwaukee-Eight 114 (114 CID, 1,870cc) featuring liquid-cooled cylinder heads powers the CVO Limited and CVO Street Glide models. Dyna and Softail models will keep the Twin Cam motor.
2. MORE POWER: Each Milwaukee-Eight engine produces 10 percent more torque than the engine it replaces in Touring models. In addition to increased displacement, the Milwaukee-Eight features a higher compression ratio and four-valve cylinder heads with 50 percent more intake and exhaust flow capacity. The valve train requires no adjustment, as the design of the rocker arms enables valve lash to be set at the factory for life. Dual spark plugs for each cylinder contribute to more efficient combustion. A single chaindriven camshaft is lighter, mechanically less complex, and creates less friction and noise. (The Milwaukee-Eight offers similar power in all global markets.) “The Milwaukee-Eight retains the classic Harley-Davidson 45-degree V-twin design,” said Harley-Davidson Chief Powertrain Engineer Alex Bozmoski, who led the Milwaukee-Eight development team. “It also retains the power characteristic that is the real legacy of the Harley-Davidson Big Twin: strong low-end torque with a broad, flat power curve through the midrange that’s ideal for the Touring motorcycle rider.”
90 / HOTBIKE.COM
3. QUICKER ACCELERATION: The Milwaukee-Eight weighs the same as the engines it replaces, so all of its extra power contributes directly to improved acceleration performance. The Milwaukee-Eight 107 accelerates 11 percent quicker 0 to 60 mph and 11 percent quicker 60 to 80 mph in top gear than the Twin Cam High Output 103. The Milwaukee-Eight 114 accelerates 8 percent quicker 0 to 60 and 12 percent quicker 60 to 80 than the Twin Cam 110. 4. IMPROVED ECONOMY: Efficiency gained in Milwaukee-Eight airflow and
combustion, including the use of dual spark plugs per cylinder, delivers to up to 11 percent better fuel economy, depending on displacement and model, and a corresponding increase in range. 5. HEAT MANAGEMENT: The Milwaukee-Eight offers improved rider and passenger thermal comfort due to reduced heat absorption, increased heat rejection, and a redesigned exhaust system. Each Milwaukee-Eight engine features a precision cooling strategy based on the specific demands of the motorcycle model, using a targeted
flow of either oil or liquid coolant around the hottest areas of the cylinder heads. A new knock sensor for each cylinder enables more precise timing control. The rear exhaust pipe is repositioned and the exhaust catalyst is relocated to move heat away from the passenger. Idle speed is lowered from 1,000 rpm to 850 rpm. 6. IMPROVED FIT: A new, slimmer primary drive cover and the low-profile shape of the air cleaner cover provide improved rider legroom around the engine and an easier reach to the ground for many riders. All Milwaukee-Eight models are fitted with an Assist and Slip Clutch with increased capacity and new hydraulic actuation that reduces clutch lever effort by 7 percent. 7. REDUCED VIBRATION: The rubbermounted Milwaukee-Eight engine features a single internal counter balancer that cancels 75 percent of primary vibration at idle for a more refined feel and more comfortable experience for rider and passengers while retaining the classic character of Harley V-twin engines. 8. RICHER EXHAUST NOTE: Lighter valves, a single camshaft, optimized cover designs, and improved driveline components eliminate mechanical powertrain noise. The engine intake and air cleaner are designed to limit intake sound while ensuring maximum airflow. As a result, the new Milwaukee-Eight is mechanically quieter, enabling a richer exhaust tone, and meets global noise and emissions standards while allowing the unmistakable rumble of its exhaust note to resonate. 9. IMPROVED CHARGING: The Milwaukee-Eight charging system delivers 50 percent more output to the battery at idle to better support the power demands of Touring riders, including accessory lighting, performance audio, and heated gear and other accessories. 10. NEW ENGINE STYLING: The Milwaukee-Eight exhibits sleek, modern styling that respects the heritage of previous Harley-Davidson Big Twin engines. “The Milwaukee-Eight is styled to project power,” said Harley-Davidson Director of Styling Brad Richards. “I compare it to the back of an Olympic swimmer—lean in the waist but broad and muscular in the shoulders.”
THE BIRTH OF A NOTION Harley had the Twin Cam for nearly two decades. For as much as they’ve improved it, the MoCo’s pulled as much performance out of it as they’re really going to; it’s even still in the lineup. That said, Harley chose to move forward in a leap instead of a step when it created Milwaukee-Eight. After much soul-searching in the face of competition from a robust Indian, H-D started by listening to what its customer base wanted. Many of them wanted something closer to the V-Rod’s Revolution mill, but how do you do that without getting away from what makes a traditional Big Twin a Big Twin? What Harley wanted was the look, sound, and feel of its air-cooled mills while evolving it five steps ahead of the game. “We started with listening to customers across the planet,” Harley Engineer Alex Bozmoski told us. “We have a very strict methodology. We looked at what would really enhance the customer experience. Design reviews and cross-
functional space holders representing service, marketing, manufacturing, and styling came into play.” When the program kicked off, Harley researched and talked with a thousand riders, in seven different global cities, about what they wanted to see in the next generation of Harley Big Twin. As they compiled that information, they saw some themes emerge about wanting more power for a variety of reasons, including riding two-up, loaded down, back roads, passing power. In addition to that, they wanted a cooler riding experience with less heat. Then they talked about better fit for the rider (air cleaner, primary changes) to enable more fit for more customers. Global customers were coming to the US and renting US-spec Harley-Davidsons and noticing how much more power they had versus the global Harley-Davidsons in other countries. H-D wanted to address that. Hurdles were in abundance with making the new motor. Engineering a new V-twin for Harley is a bit like directing a Star Wars movie. There’s huge presJAN/FEB 2017 / 91
TESTED | HARLEY’S NEW MILWAUKEE-EIGHT MOTOR sure from everyone. Your bosses want it to do well and the fans need to be happy, all while pulling in the next generation of consumers. From a technical standpoint, thermal comfort was the biggest hurdle. There are so many sources that can go south and so many conditions to consider when dealing with heat in motorcycling, from being in traffic to in a parade, hot out, cold out, crosswinds, and more. Heads get hot, you have cylinder fin radiation, and so on. Wider or thinner tires in front give you different air movement. Shooting the gap with all these models to make sure each is a pleasant riding experience is tough. Harley spent a lot of time in wind tunnels. INTO THE MIXTURE Harley minimized intake and mechanical noise while maximizing the exhaust note. It starts with the airbox that has no intake noise. Part of that has been due to its air volume. Also, getting that airbox tucked in closer to the bike gave H-D the right ergonomics it wanted. Exhaust-wise, they tucked the pipes down in a vee and had them fall between the transmission and cam cover. CAM-DO ATTITUDE On the cam drive, the Twin Cam was exactly that: It had twin cams. MilwaukeeEight was more about minimalism than its predecessor. The idea was to reduce the parasitic losses by removing the number of moving parts, hence the new single cam. To make sure this thing was silent and without resonance, Harley went to a hydraulic tensioner. With one cam, a precise chain, and that tensioner, they have a cam drive system that has lower friction, less moving parts, and is very silent. SENSORS AND SENSIBILITY The Twin Cam used ion sensors. When getting into different riding positions and heat, you can get detonation conditions. Ion-sensing measures charge in the cylinder after combustion at the spark plugs. However, it has a lot of range to it. As you start to retard the motor to compensate for those riding conditions, you lose economy. Ion sensing is not as precise as measuring the knock through an accelerometer-based sensor. With Milwaukee-Eight, Harley went to precision knock sensors on each cylinder. That helps with thermal management and fuel economy.

This cutaway of one cylinder and head shows intensive cooling of critical areas—the exhaust valve seat and exhaust bridge—by circulating liquid, shown in blue. Note the lovely fin surface finish, lightweight piston with low-tension boreconforming rings.
You also get more output. Combined with the new torque based ECM, you get smooth and responsive power delivery. Additionally, two spark plugs per cylinder were added to speed up the burn. This helps dramatically with combustion efficiency. All of it is designed to work together for the right swirl and atomization. The whole thing is designed so that when you get to the throttle grip, you get as much power as it can do because of great control over combustion. Then it goes to the primary delivering power to the transmission in a smoother, more efficient way. Also, the mechanical components were made for sound reduction. COOL RUNNINGS “We added oil capacity,” Alex says. “All of the engines are precision cooled. We have versions that are precision watercooled, and precision oil-cooled. The water coolers are very similar to what we have today, but on the oil-cooled it’s slightly different. We changed the design because we changed the heads. There’s a bigger oil pump; we drilled passages through our heads to adequately cool the exhaust
valves. Some models are oil-cooled, some are water. The principle behind the oil-cooled system was to avoid overcomplicating the look of the bike with radiators and fans, et cetera.” WHOSE LINE IS IT ANYWAY? Harley didn’t leave the driveline alone either. The compensator bearings were changed, the ramps changed. The goal was smooth torque in all conditions. Complementing that, the clutch was changed to an Assist and Slip Clutch. As you apply load, it pulls the clutch together to minimize spring pressure. Whenever you up performance, you need more spring in the clutch. Harley went with a hydraulic Brembo activation system across the board on the Touring models to offset that. It’s better at the lever ergonomically. To experience the transformation of the 2017 Harley-Davidson Touring models for yourself, visit h-d.com/testride to schedule a test ride. bviously, no one’s ever going to confuse the Ark of the Covenant with a Harley FXR. For one thing, no one’s ever had divine fire shoot out of a bike and turn people into human patty melts. When Jeff Holt tasked me with a lead on the last production FXR, though, I felt like I was looking for rare treasure on two wheels. I was right.

“Well, I mean that for nearly 3,000 years man has been searching for the lost ark. It’s not something to be taken lightly. No one knows its secrets. It’s like nothing you’ve ever gone after before.” —Marcus Brody, Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

THE
LIFE
It’s pretty common knowledge that Harley discontinued the FXR in the ’90s in favor of the less expensively produced Dyna. Later on, H-D’s CVO division created the FXR3 and FXR4, the latter being produced with the last Evo motors for the year 2000. The bike you see here is the very last production model for both the FXR frame and the Evolution motor to roll off the assembly line. Holding claim to both of those honors is what makes this motorcycle such a rarity and a pleasure to bring to you. I was kind of giddy when the current owner, James Bakalich of parts4less. com, got back to me on it. James isn’t the original owner though. That privilege fell to Norman Howell in Florida who came into this bike by that oldest of standbys: dumb luck. Howell’s no stranger to bikes. He first threw leg over a saddle more than 55 years ago. When he saw a yellow FXR in a magazine article in 1999 or so, he knew he had to have one as his next scoot. Dick Farmer’s Harley-Davidson was his go-to dealership; they’d sold him his Sportster and later his Electra Glide. Surely, they’d have one of those FXR things lying around, right? Why, yes, yes they did. Not only did the dealership have a shiny new CVO FXR4, but Howell pulled a barn find without the barn. Unknown to him or Dick Farmer’s, the new FXR Howell took home was the very last ever made.

“SOMEONE NEGLECTED TO TELL THE DEALERSHIP THAT THEY HAD THE LAST OF THE BREED ON THEIR SHOWROOM FLOOR. IF THEY HAD, I STRONGLY DOUBT HOWELL WOULD’VE BEEN ABLE TO PURCHASE IT.” That information didn’t come to light until after Howell broke in his new motorcycle. He got it home, put some miles on it, and went to clean it. That’s when Howell found out he was on the bonus plan. In removing a side panel, he opened a mystery. Why the hell were there signatures on the inside of said bodywork? His wonder only deepened on finding another signature on the frame, where the writing was covered by the seat before he took it off during cleaning. “I rode it back down there and showed it to Farmer’s,” Howell explained. “They’d never checked the covers and had no idea it was the last FXR.” Why would they? The bike arrives at the dealership all shiny and clean. If it runs fine, there’s no reason to start pulling off covers. Someone neglected to tell the dealership that they had the last of the breed on their showroom floor. If they had, I strongly doubt Howell would’ve been able to purchase it. A few years later, Howell’s wife got in contact with the factory to get the full info on his FXR as a surprise for Father’s Day. They emailed and phoned back and forth. Harley-Davidson did the research on it. Eventually, they sent Howell the paperwork
on it stating that this bike was, in fact, the final FXR and Evolution motor Harley ever made. The CVO team had taken a shot of themselves with the bike in the foreground, and he received a copy of that too. The only drawback was owning an FXR you can’t ride. Why would you? The thrill of taking it on the road would be intense, but think of how bad you’d feel if you even scratched the factory paint on a piece of H-D history this rare. Howell wrapped it up, maintained it regularly, and kept the bike to himself for well over a decade. Only moving out of his house to smaller digs would part him from his FXR. Opting to sell the last verified FXR in history, he listed it for sale online. Scammers stepped up to bottom feed him out of his treasure, but Howell was having none of it. It wasn’t until James bugged the hell out of him to buy it that Howell relented. Nowadays, the FXR sits at an undisclosed location guarded by a big bad dog named Ninja. Unlike the Ark of the Covenant, no one’s putting this beauty in a crate to be researched by “top men.” HB JAN/FEB JUNE 2017 2013 // 97

GETTING HAMMERED! HAMMERHEAD DESIGNS CNC BRAKE AND SHIFT LEVER INSTALL
I
n the never-ending quest to modify our bikes, a few components have been left out of the fray. Until recently we have had to just paint or powdercoat our stock shift and brake arms and maybe even hack them up to look and feel more custom before doing so. Well, that was until the folks at Hammerhead Designs got crafty with their CNC machines and came out with some of the most beautifully carved aluminum brake and shift arms money can buy. Hammerhead has been making tons of badass parts for dirt bikes and streetbikes, so when we got word that they were making parts for Harleys we had to make a call and get some! When the “Brown Santa” UPS driver dropped off the box a few days later we were very keen on the quality and craftsmanship of the 6061 T6 aluminum components, and we loved the fact that we could customize them with different colors and styles to suit our bike’s scheme and our personal riding style.
98 / HOTBIKE.COM
Both the brake and shift arms from Hammerhead are modular and have many styles and colors of pedals and pegs to choose from. There are even spring-loaded moto-style breakaway versions with different height traction screws available.
The shift levers can be custom tailored using different offset tips that range from -5mm shorter than stock, 0mm (stock), +5mm, +10mm, all the way to +20mm longer than stock. The brake lever comes complete with a self-lubricating Oilite
bronze bushing and stainless-steel mounting hardware. As you can see, the stuff looks great, but after we installed them, we figured out that massive amounts of R&D went into them as well. Here’s how it went. HB
1 p The shift arm’s design is well thought out with a
replaceable spline insert made from hardened aluminum.
2 p The shift arm attaches quickly to the bike’s outer primary
with the supplied stainless-steel hardware.
3 p The brake lever/pedal requires taking the stock foot control mount off of the bike.
4
You can see that there are major differences between the stock brake pedal and the Hammerhead offering.
5 p The Hammerhead brake pedal also comes complete with
all mounting hardware, making it a breeze to install and adjust to one’s liking.
It seems as if it took forever to get some great-looking and functional shift and brake arms for late-model Dyna bikes. Thank you, Hammerhead Designs.

BURLY JAIL BAR AND PERFORMANCE MACHINE COMPONENTS INSTALL verybody knows stock sucks. That’s why there is an entire segment of the motorcycle market dedicated to making riders’ bikes work and look better. Take for instance this 2013 H-D 883 Iron Sportster. Sure, it’s a great-looking bike as it currently sat, but, man, it could look and feel better with just a few more custom items. That is why we decided to give this bike a handlebar upgrade with some 10-inch Burly Jail bars and an extended brake line and cable kit. We upped the ante even more with a set of Performance Machine grips and PM mirrors. Here is how it went down. HB

WE BUILT THE ULTIMATE 39MM FORK T
he 39mm fork has been on a myriad of Harley-Davidson models spanning decades. It has been proven time and time again to offer good suspension with many of H-D’s sportier models wearing them up front in many different guises. We decided to build a ground-up blacked-out performance version of the Harley (actually made by Showa) 39mm using some of the latest and greatest parts and accessories the aftermarket industry currently has to offer. Here’s how we did it. HB
We chose Jimmy Todd’s Topline Tubes for this build due to the fact that they are DLC coated (like Superbike racing forks) making them very slick. This keeps fork stiction to a minimum. Not to mention they are black and look badass.

Revolution Performance Bolt-On Big Bore Kits are custom made, all aluminum cylinders with nickel silicon carbide plating for less friction, better oil retention, incredible reliability, and more horsepower.
This dyno proven kit comes complete with custom made forged aluminum Wiseco pistons with ArmorGlide® skirt coating, enhanced 2016 ring technology, tool steel wrist pins, clips and complete gasket set. This powerful combination is simply the most reliable way you can add to big power to your American V-Twin!

CUSTOM SOFTAIL SEATING LEATHER TOOLING BY DUANE BALLARD

uane Ballard is the man when it comes to custom leatherwork for motorcycles. RUSS WERNIMONT DESIGNS FXR FAIRING KIT

he FXRP and FXRT style fairings are seeing a rather large resurgence in popularity as of late, and Russ Wernimont Designs (RWD), a veteran of custombike bodywork and accessories, has thrown its hat in the ring with one very nice version of the FXR fairing. thought out and made well. The fairing goes for just less than $600 without paint, and it comes with a windshield and headlight cover. The mounting kit will cost you another $600 to get it on your bike, but it provides you with all the needed hardware to do so. Although it does not come with any audio pre-installed, a stereo or Bluetooth module and various speakers can easily be mounted and wired up by someone handy with bike audio. We had our RWD fairing custom painted at Imzz Elite in Orange, California. Since then we have it on the bike for a few thousand miles with nary an issue. It blocks the wind very well and gave our Dyna Fat Bob that aggressive look we were looking for. If you are looking for an FXR-style fairing, do yourself a favor and check out RWD. RUSSWERNIMONT.COM

his is my 1967 XLCH that I finished building in May. It took me about six months from the ground up and was the first time I had ever done any kind of work on a motorcycle. When I got the bike, it didn’t run at all. The guy I bought it from had gotten it a couple of years ago, and I helped him unload it in boxes when he got it. He reassembled it and after six months of trying to get it started, he gave up on it and sold it to me. I spent about an hour messing with it—cleaning the carb, adjusting the points in the magneto, and resetting the timing. I did finally manage to get it started for a while, but it was blowing all kinds of oil out the rear cylinder exhaust. All of the work was done in my shed (12 x 28 portable), including the paint. Because the motor was in such
bad shape when I acquired the bike, I completely disassembled and rebuilt it. The frame was stripped and painted, along with the tank. The rear fender, from Kraft Tech, had to be modified for
the chain. The chrome was also in pretty bad shape, and I spent quite a bit of time cleaning it up as best I could. DEAN JOHNSON Nolanville, TX

A DECADE OF GOOD TIMES HAS COME TO AN END:
#10 WORDS AND PHOTOS: ASHMORE ELLIS
W
122 / HOTBIKE.COM
ith so many events popping up the past few years, it’s important to remember that there are some people who have been doing this sort of thing for decades. Rides like the El Diablo Run, Slab City (RIP), and Gypsy Run are just a few I can think of (I know there are more, but simmer down. I only have so many words I can submit). Gypsy Run has been happening every September for the past 10 years and is owned and operated by Walter Gemeinhardt of Kickstart Cycles. I would personally describe him as a large teddy bear who sometimes threatens to “crack some skulls if you don’t knock it off ” (makes me smile every time I hear him say it). The event gives off a no-frills-plenty-of-thrills kind of vibe that welcomes everyone who feels like escaping into the Catskills for a few days via two wheels. I had gone to the run once before in 2013, and it was actually the first motorcycle event I’ve ever participated in. I thought it was such a wild idea—hundreds of bikes all going to the same place to camp and hang out. Were people nice? Was I going to make it? Am I prepared? To answer: Yes, yes, and hell no! Everyone was incredibly nice and I made it to each campsite just fine, but holy hell was I not prepared for the cold. However, I survived and the event ended up being one of the most incredible weekends filled with new friends who I’ve stayed in touch with and have ridden with many times in between. To me, this is why these kinds of rides and runs are so great and why I felt the need to be at the last and final Gypsy Run to say goodbye to an event that humbled my ass and taught me some valuable riding lessons in 2013. This event solidified friendships, tested my limits, and created some pretty damn good campfire tales for years to come (most of which are extremely exaggerated over the past three years, which makes them age like a fine wine and just get better). It was incredible to see more ladies in attendance this year, and even though we didn’t compete in the chopper canoe race, we danced our asses off and felt right at home in the mix of wild and crazy that was Gypsy Run 10. The event ran its course and will not be returning, but I have a feeling Walter isn’t done creating and producing events quite yet. If you are reading this and getting a little bummed out you missed the final Gypsy Run, well, you should be. But there are tons of rides and runs coming up that you can be a part of. Events like these are meant to bring people together from all different walks of life, and even if you go solo, you’ll be surrounded by people you have things in common with, and trust me, they are happy you are there to share the experience and a beer. TALE OF TWO NEW ENGINES
WORDS AND PHOTO: JOE KRESS
A
ll the Harley talk these days surrounds the MilwaukeeEight. It isn’t often that The Motor Company drops a new engine into the market. Years, decades even, separate the launches. Count ’em off: Knuckle, Pan, Shovel, Evo,
Twin Cam, and now that eight-valver, the Milwaukee-Eight. A 107-inch version will most likely become the new base engine with a 114 for the CVOs and Specials. Right now they’re both slated for the 2017 Touring and Trike models only. Harley’s stated goal here, besides having an emissions-compliant engine well into the future, is to achieve what it’s termed a “world-class ride feeling.” That means smooth, cool-running, and more torque for two-up riding and highway passing power. But the Milwaukee-Eight is only part of that equation. This new multi-valver with its internal counterbalancer and localized cooling (using either oil or coolant circulated around the exhaust valves) has been coupled with a host of chassis and suspension changes that, it’s hoped, will keep current Harley riders happy by not abandoning the look, sound, and feel of a V-twin while simultaneously bringing a whole new group into the fold with the sort of refined feel they’ve come to expect in most every form of motorized transport. And for the most part it’s been achieved. The ’17 Touring model Harleys are indeed smooth riding, sharp handling, and the increase in low-end torque is certainly there. Independent dyno tests tell the story. The 107-inch Milwaukee-Eight is making right around 80 hp with 98 or so poundfeet torque. The 114 ups those numbers to 87 and 108, respectively. Impressive when compared to the mid-60s horsepower of a stock Twin Cam 96 and its 80 or so pound-feet torque. The OE MilwaukeeEight bests a twin-cooled 103 Twin Cam, as well, an engine generally putting out a stock 75 hp coupled with approximately 90 pound-feet of torque. “No question, this new Harley engine’s going to be a nice platform to build on,” Jamie Hanson at Speed’s Performance says. “There appears to be lots of room for
124 / HOTBIKE.COM
improvement.” The OE cam, for starters (and there’s only one, chain-driven) is fairly mild. On the plus side those multivalve heads have a shallower combustion chamber, allowing a higher compression ratio. But then the airflow, obviously better with all those valves, is choked down with a throttle body measuring only 55mm. Give and take, and the aftermarket is sure to respond. But right now better air filters, pipes, and of course a dyno-tune to optimize things pretty much rounds out the list of available improvements. “But even that’s historically been good for a 10- to 15-percent bump in both horsepower and torque,” Jamie adds, enough to put an otherwise stock Milwaukee-Eight into some pretty nice territory. So is it time to rush out to the dealership? If you’re already in the market for a new Touring machine, absolutely. But the introduction of this new enginefamily doesn’t automatically mean it’s time to start throwing rocks at the Twin Cam, labeling it yesterday’s news. Remember those numbers, especially after the quick addition of free-flowing air filters, pipes, and a re-mapping session on the dyno? A 96 or 103 becomes downright lively. “And when you start talking about a 106-inch kit for those engines,” Jamie says, “it’s a totally different picture.” That’s no exaggeration, and that big-inch Twin Cam transformation can happen without taking the engine out of the frame. The result, on average, can be 115- to 120-
plus horsepower with a torque number to match. Add in a set of big-valve/big-flow heads and a throttle body to go along with the new cylinders, pistons, and cams and those Twin Cam 106 numbers often jump into the 130-plus range, horsepower and torque. That’s performance to get your attention, and unlike the powerband of that stock Milwaukee-Eight it’s not going to sign off at 3,500 to 3,800 rpm, either. “The cool thing about that big-bore Twin Cam 106 is that it’s something we can do right now, at an event,” Jamie says. And with the comfortable 10.8 compression ratio used and the S&S Easy Start cams it’s also a cool-running, reliable engine with all the torque you want throughout the powerband, an engine ready to go anywhere, anytime, in any bike, Touring, Softail, Dyna, you name it. Unquestionably, the release of the Milwaukee-Eight is exciting. But so is 130-plus horsepower in a Twin Cam 106, especially when it’s sitting in a bike you already have. In the market for a new Touring machine right now? By all means go see a dealer. Otherwise, next time the Speed’s Performance crew is at a nearby event (their schedule’s on the website) stop by for a chat, or pick up the phone and give ’em a call about that other newengine option, a Twin Cam 106. It’s hardly yesterday’s news. HB SOURCE: SPEED’S PERFORMANCE PLUS speedsperformanceplus.com (605) 695-1401 – MN (605) 695-2272 – SD

CROSS-COUNTRY PLAYTIME
W
elcome to my favorite time of year! My annual cross-country road trip. After all of the prep I’ve done over the previous months it’s finally time to hit the open road. For those of you who don’t know, this annual road trip is not just for pleasure—it’s for work. As I emcee various activities in the motorcycle world across the country my goal is to spread the love and joy that the lifestyle offers at each stop—accompanied by a shot or two along the way of course. The first leg of the trip had to be a quick shot, as I had run out of playtime due to unexpected, last-minute maintenance. I ended up bombing from Long Beach to Sturgis in 33 hours. The first
24 hours I knocked out 1,000 miles. Tough but worth every mile. Unfortunately for me the story continues one breakage at a time. In the last 10 miles of the trip my new primary chain tensioner came apart. That’s the story of my life. I dropped the bike off at a local shop and took to the streets in search of bad decisions. Multiple groups of friends converged, creating one large funinduced mob, which made for the most entertaining Sturgis I could ask for. With so many positive folks in one spot, we kept finding ourselves covered in laughter. Without wheels I mainly spent my time in downtown Sturgis. So many wonderful people are anchored to that town during the rally. The locals quickly became family, and my bartender friends who I’ve known for years highlighted my mornings, noons, and nights. My new friendships made it feel like I wasn’t in fact marooned. Five days later The Creature was ready to go. It was time for a ride with Ms. Lauren De Vine! At this point the rally was over, so it was just us stragglers. I couldn’t have asked for better weather, more barren roads, or better company. I could’ve asked my Sporty to not break again, but this is me we’re talking about. Drive sprocket nut stripped out. Since we weren’t going any farther I decided it was time to bust out the blankets and “stare at the stars” with my passenger on the edge of 385 just south of Deadwood. Pure magic. Some days later she was ready to go again, and it was time to head
to Milwaukee for my next gig. But not before she breaks again in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Lucky for me I’ve made more friends than enemies, and Pat Jansen drove five hours to come to my rescue. We took the motor apart at Sin Central Garage and learned that it was piston slap. Time to upgrade the top-end. The Creature has punched me in the mouth so many times now that I don’t even flinch when something goes wrong. I stop, look around, and consider the blessings in my life. So, I borrow Pat’s truck and drive to my next gig at the Harley-Davidson Museum. Game over! —DUMPTRUCK
