SPEED AND STYLE. WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

or the most part, the customization of V-twin-powered motorcycles of the past were either show or go. For years it was either/or and not too much in between. What the hell does that mean, you say? Well, either guys chopped and chromed their cycle to make it look good or they bored and blueprinted it to make it go fast. Sure, there was the Digger and Pro Street cycle crazes in the ’80s and ’90s, but neither of those ever really combined power and beauty in a way that was attractive or easy to attain. Something has happened over the past few years. We have seen more custom builders fabricating bikes that possess high levels of both show and go all wrapped into one two-wheeled package. Yes, the level of custom bikes with real-deal geometry and performance parts have been on the rise since the turn of the 2000s, but over the past three years we at Hot Bike have been seeing the few become the norm. We have been very conscious of this

growth in the custom-bike scene and coined the phrase “speed and style” a couple years back to define the next level of performance bikes— machines that partake in what seems to be equal parts good looks, great handling, killer craftsmanship, and laser-like attention to the details like paint and plating. What started off with only a handful of bike builders and fabricators who put together horsepower-rich air-cooled American motors and mated them to solid chassis with a list of superbike suspension and braking componentry seemed to have been quickly evolving at the base level. This lead to a cottage industry of very few folks across the country and world building brackets and machining small parts so others “in the know” could get these performance parts onto their Harleys as well. Then something very exciting happened. Steadily the level of the aftermarket-parts industry support for these products had been growing and was noticed by larger companies and product distributors. And now we have a ton of great builders and parts manufacturers coming together

to make speed-and-style bikes an attainable reality for anyone at any age who would like to build one for themselves. And this is why we have dedicated this issue to this genre of next-level custom bikes. We couldn’t in our right minds dedicate a whole issue to performance V-twin-powered motorcycles and not include the Harley-Davidson FXR. Anyone who knows even the slightest bit about the MoCo’s history believes that the FXR was the best-handling chassis ever built by Harley-Davidson. So that is why we expanded our number of feature bikes to include a vast array of performance-based FXRs. Everything from stripped-down and cut-up highly modified machines to bag and fairing-clad performance touring “bagger” FXRPs and FXRTs has been represented. To top off this exceptional issue, we also filled the rest of the pages of this magazine with products made to perform, including tools, clothing, gear, and electronics that have the perfect combination of both speed and style for any and all bikes and riders. We hope you enjoy this special edition and that it motivates you to bump up the ponies on that bike of yours while making it look better at the same time. HB JEFF G. HOLT EDITOR IN CHIEF

EDITORÕS NOTE

T FRESH XPERIMENTAL REDESIGN

“WE DECIDED TO CUT OUT SOME OF THE FLUFF AND ADD A BUNCH MORE STUFF WITH MORE THAN 10 CUSTOM FXR FEATURES.”

he way information is absorbed in our culture is under constant revision, and as part of the mainstream media, we must constantly adapt to how we present it. That’s exactly what we are doing in this special Speed and Style FXR issue of Hot Bike. We all know that the resurgence of the FXR is at an all-time high. Not only is it evident in the pages of the make-believe magazine world, but it seems I can’t go a single day without seeing it in the real world. I recently visited a well-respected shop in Long Beach, Bennett’s Performance VTwin, to cover a tech article of a motor upgrade. I was only there a couple of afternoons for a few hours at a time. While I was there the first day, Buddy and Seth from Unknown Industries rode in on a couple of their FXRs to pick up some parts fresh off their NASCAR stunt tour. Not a big deal to see these guys around, but still I made a small mental note. The following day, an FXR that I have been waiting to shoot (truth being he’s been waiting on me— ha!) rode in to the shop to shoot the shit. Eric, the shop owner, was giving me a small tour of his shop and in the back was his FXR showbike build for Born-Free scattered in expensive pieces. Finally, up on one of the lifts was yet another FXRT that was getting some work done. After two days what I walked away with is that this FXR trend has long left the magazine and underground club world and is now deeply imbedded into the mainstream V-twin society. Sure, sure, I know this revelation is being made from a visit to one shop, over two days, but Bennett’s Performance has been at the same location for 18 years! We have made it no secret that since 2014 when “Jefe” Holt took over and brought me on board (later Robert and Ed), our mission has been to change the status quo of V-twin media. On top of old-school paper to print editors and art designers, we are hashtaggers, have many Facebook friends, tweet like birds, can chat in a snap, and are D&D webmaster geeks on a lonely Friday night. With this special issue of Hot Bike, we decided to cut out some of the fluff and add a bunch more stuff with more than 10 custom FXR features. In order to make room for all the bikes, we moved the stories over to hotbike.com to save all that valuable in-your-hand real estate for photos. Now I’m sure some of you are going to send us letters and emails saying you hate it. But if you still love print like we do and still live in the digital age, this might be Goldilocks’ porridge you’ve been looking for. Either way, this is one we’ll be looking for feedback, as we at Hot Bike plan on continuing our domination of the V-twin media. JOHN ZAMORA EDITOR

INTERROGATION

TYLER SAWICKI SHOP: LOCATION: WEBSITE: HANDLE:

Sawicki Speed Shop Vancouver, BC sawickispeedshop.com @sawickispeed

DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS. Positive, determined, durable. WHAT DO YOU RIDE? A ’92 FXRT and ’05 Dyna. My lineup is under constant change, but the FXRT is staying put! WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST BIKE? A 1992 LEM LX2. I think I was seven and my dad broke his ankle on it shortly after it showed up. My first Harley was a Sportster. WHAT IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE BIKE? That’s a super-hard question to answer. If I had to say one bike and only one, it would be Dan from Ivers Custom Cycle’s Twin Cam FXR. The bike is completely modern and to the point— could ride across the country, hammer canyons, or rip in the city comfortably on the same bike. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO WORK IN THE MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY? It was kind of a natural progression.

20 / HOTBIKE.COM

Motorcycles and fabrication have constantly been on my mind for as long as I can remember. When I was a kid I used to build exhaust for anything and everything I could get my hands on. It’s a full-time hobby at this point. WHAT DO YOU THINK THE FUTURE OF THE MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY IS? I’m stoked about the direction the industry is going, as performance-based bikes have always been my focus and what I’ve been into. It’s really nice to see guys trying to push the envelope while using high-quality, handmade bespoke parts. It’s also deadly to see guys like Lee Stuart and Unknown Industries pushing the limits on what’s “normal” on a Harley. WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST LIFE ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR? It’s 100 percent raising my kid. There is nothing better. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST REGRET TO DATE? My biggest regret since starting Sawicki Speed Shop is feeding into the online bullshit that the keyboard warriors spew.

It’s complete nonsense with almost no merit 99 percent of the time. It basically taught me to focus on making the best possible product and take care of my customers. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? My inspiration comes from other craftsmen constantly pushing forward, doing new things, and creating waves in their niche. I don’t like all the bullshit in the industry where people have to talk shit about other people to feel like they’re making it. I feel like if you have something to prove or show someone, get out there and make it happen instead of flapping your gums. ANY LAST WORDS? Just a huge thanks to everyone who supports me. My family and friends for putting up with many long days in the shop and helping out as much as they do. We’ve got some cool stuff planned for the future, and I wouldn’t be able to do it without everyone’s support! HB

hat kind of bike do you get when a magazine editor-in-chief teams up with the quintessential performance Harley builder? You get the Hot Bike/Kraus Motor Co. FXR-R, a bike that is fast, light, and majorly capable. Capable of what, you ask? This Harley-Davidson FXR chassis-based bike is just as good on the track as it is on the highway, and that’s the way we planned it from the word “go.” We started out with a box-stock FXR frame we bought from Chip and Mikey at San Diego Customs. The frame was sent up to Satya Kraus in Santa Rosa, California, where he did a ton of lightening, cutting, chopping, and smoothing. Once the frame was the way Satya wanted

it, it was sent down to Sport Chrome in Huntington Beach, California, to lay on an amazing amount of nickel plating. We got busy on the parts list, with fast and light being the executive order. We partnered with JIMS USA on this project bike build, and it was kind enough to send us one of its fire-breathing 131-inch Twin Cam/Evo mount motors and a Fat 5 transmission. I can tell you firsthand that this powerplant is both a thing of beauty and possesses some seriously raw power. Brock’s Performance also knows a thing or two about making bikes light and fast, so we partnered with them on one of Brock’s aluminum swingarms that is at the

pinnacle of the light-yet-strong construction. Brock’s was also kind enough to offer up a set of its ultra-light BST carbon-fiber wheels. If you don’t know about Brock’s BST wheels, they are about one-fourth the weight of stock H-D wheels. By taking the weight off of the wheels we have severely decreased its rolling mass. By doing so the engine doesn’t have to compensate for trying to spin up a set of heavy wheels, which makes the bike faster from a standing stop and in curves. In short, the BST wheels are nothing short of carbon-fiber functional art. We wrapped the wheels in some Pirelli racing rubber and also added some stainless Performance Machine rotors and a custom Kraus Motor Co. sprocket.

The bike was also treated to Öhlins suspension. Anybody who knows anything regarding motorcycle suspension knows the Swedish company Öhlins is the top of the food chain. A set of beautifully CNC-machined Kraus Motor Co. triple trees were mated to Kraus custom-tuned 43mm upside-down forks up front. Out back a set of four-way-adjustable Öhlins piggyback shocks were used, which were also made to Kraus Motor Co.’s strict specifications. The combination of the years of tuning knowledge from Kraus and the infinite quality of the Öhlins parts makes this 25-year-old Harley handle like a brand-new 2017 superbike. Stopping all 480 pounds of flash and fast is a set of Performance Machine radial brakes and hand controls and a set of beautifully machined one-off Kraus Motor Co. foot controls. Speaking of one-off parts, Satya wanted to use a hydraulic clutch on the FXR-R, and the JIMS Fat 5 transmission doesn’t really like to be engaged with fluid from the factory, so Satya used a custommachined Baker Function Formed hydraulic side cover to complete the job. On the other side of the bike Satya also did some magic with a stock Rivera

Primo belt drive to get the primary belt, custom Kraus mid-controls, and final drive chain to mesh well with this high-horsepower application. The sheet metal on this bike was done by none other than Satya Kraus as well. The tank is a heavily reworked H-D model, and the tailsection/ fender was built from scratch. Saddlemen stepped up to the plate and built a one-off seat for the bike, which is minimalistic yet comfortable. Once the sheet metal was fitted, it was given to Taylor Schultz of Schultz Designz for a sleek, black paint job with silver scallops. Another completely custom piece on the bike is the beautiful full-titanium pipe that our pal Jay at FAB28 hand fabricated. The pipe weighs in at less than 7 pounds and is made from 50-plus individual pieces of titanium. This exhaust is indeed an amazing piece of American craftsmanship. This bike is chock-full of cutting-edge products, and the other parts rounding out the build are as follows: The Italian company Rizoma donated a set of 7/8-inch handlebars and footpegs for this build. Spiegler Performance Parts USA took care of all the custom brake lines. Spiegler also distributes the

German company Motogadget, and it was kind enough to send us one of its Motoscope Mini gauges. The small, yet informative, dot matrix LED information center was integrated into the top handlebar clamp by Satya. This combo unit gauge/top clamp is now in production and can be purchased directly from Kraus Motor Co. Clearwater Lights supplied us with the Ÿber-small, yet megabright, USA-made LED headlight and taillight that can and will get attention while riding on the road. Motion Pro hooked us up with a throttle and throttle cable. This bike was two years in the making, and every part we used and square inch of this bike’s real estate was scrutinized many times over before the project FXR-R was brought to fruition. Every deadline we set for this bike was broken due to both Satya Kraus and the Hot Bike staff ’s commitment to excellence. As you can see, this bike is like no other FXR before it, and it is truly the pinnacle of a performance HarleyDavidson motorcycle. HB

t all started with sportbikes. After I totaled my last one I moved on to Harleys. I first bought a 2003 Dyna and built it, but it just didn’t feel right. One day I rode a buddy’s FXR and fell in love and knew I had to have one. I found one and purchased it from Aaron from Suicide Machine Co. I brought it home and tore it apart, but I went farther than I wanted. I bought another one back East, which was supposed to be a bike to ride while my other one was being worked on, but that didn’t last. I ended up redoing everything on this bike. I had it down to the frame and redid the motor, paint, and pretty much everything but the frame. HB

Investment-Cast Handlebar Risers Big-twin stunt king Buddy Suttle puts his FXR through hell. Twelve o’clock wheelies on a 600-pound custom will expose every weakness in a machine, so it’s no accident Buddy runs Biltwell bars and Murdock risers. Murdock’s one-piece steel top clamp and threaded mounting bungs are TIG welded to dual 4130 chromoly uprights to create the burliest bar clamp money can buy. When you make a living grinding the fenders off Harley customs, quality counts.

LIFE

LIVING THE FXR LIFE WITH KIRK TAYLOR WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU DO? I’m Kirk Taylor, and I’m the owner and operator of Custom Design Studios. We build, design, paint, fabricate, and service all types of motorcycles. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING BUSINESS? I pulled my first business license in 1988, and in my current location for 20 years, but I grew up in a machine shop that my father owned, where I was exposed to all things that gearheads love. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH THE FXR? I painted my first FXR in 1991, and shortly after that, I purchased my 1985 FXRT that I still have today. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN BUILDING FXRS? Since 1991. The day I got my bone-stock FXRT. HOW HAVE YOU SEEN THE POPULARITY OF FXRS COME AND GO OVER THE YEARS? In the ’90s people were stripping off the fairings and bags from the police-auction bikes and lowering them. Some were putting Wide Glides on the bike. You would see bold, monochromatic paint jobs, maybe faux granite or pastel colors fully molded out. Then they fell out of favor for the widetire chopper scene. All the old “club” guys in the ’90s and early 2000s rode FXRs though. They were the ride of choice because they did everything well. Eric Buell designed the frame, and, in my opinion, H-D has not built a better bike since. It’s been very pleasing to see the young guns discover how awesome the FXR is. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THE FXRS? Their versatility. They are great bikes that go fast, handle well (by H-D standards), can be used as a touring bike for long-distance riding, and are easily adapted into any purpose-built genre.

70 / HOTBIKE.COM

WORDS AND PHOTOS: JOHN ZAMORA

“H-D COULD REINTRODUCE THE FXR CHASSIS INEXPENSIVELY, THE NEW M8 MOTOR, AND IT WOULD OUTSELL THE DYNA AND SPORTSTER LINEUP.”

WHAT DO YOU HATE ABOUT THE FXRS? I hate that H-D went away from what was a progressive forward-thinking platform (ahead of its time) for the sake of a couple of dollars. Initially the old loyalists struggled with accepting the FXR because “it’s too much like a Jap bike.” Time has changed many opinions as people have come to recognize how special this model is and has been in H-D lineage. IS DYNA A GOOD REPLACEMENT, OR DOES THE FXR STAND ALONE? No. The Dyna is a fine example of corporate compromise. It’s heavier, has issues with handling, and rubber mounting in its ridiculously heavy chassis. They needed a “sport model” FX bike to replace the FXR in the Big Twin lineup, and it looked more traditional than the FXRs. That doesn’t make the Dyna bad; it just means it falls short comparatively speaking. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO SEE HARLEY-DAVIDSON MAKE IN THE FUTURE? Ha! I’ve actually had the opportunity to give my opinion to some of H-D’s higher-ups in styling. I think with the advent of modern robotics in the frame making process, H-D could reintroduce the FXR chassis inexpensively, the new M8 motor, and it would outsell the Dyna and Sportster lineup. If they offered the bike with some of the XR1200 and Roadster forks, wheels, and shocks… Can you imagine the interest from the younger enthusiasts out there? HOW LONG DO YOU THINK THE FXR CRAZE WILL LAST? You can’t predict that, but finding FXRs for a good price has gotten harder. That means people want them. It’s all supply and demand. WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL BE NEXT?

The hooligan flat-track/street-tracker scene is taking off in 2017. Factory participation will drive young buyers to the dealerships. I also expect to see EVO and TC Softails make a comeback but with a purpose-built “club style” vibe. They’re inexpensive and plentiful. ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO ADD? Support your small independent shops! They are what support the riders. All of the cool, cutting-edge stuff comes out of shops like these. You don’t get customer service from big mail-order box store faceless corporate entities. This is a difficult enough business to make a living in, so help us to help you. HB

SKILL LEVEL // ADVANCED

ENGLISH WHEEL BASICS T

his month we’re going to touch on the basics of using an English wheel for shaping metal. There are a lot of English wheel options available on the market these days—from compact bench-top models to large floor units. (1) My wheel is a mid-level unit from Baileigh Industrial, model EW-40. (2) Most wheels come with at least an upper wheel and a variety of lower anvil dies. (3) The lower anvil works in conjunction with a large upper wheel. (4) We’ll first look at the effects of a flat lower anvil. As you can see, both the top and bottom wheels are flat and make full contact across the width of the wheels. (5) The pressure of the larger-diameter upper wheel being exerted upon the smaller-diameter lower wheel causes the sheet metal to contour around the smaller-diameter wheel. (6) The pressure is typically adjustable by either a hand- or foot-operated adjustment wheel. Here you can see the sheet metal starting to curve around the lower wheel. (7) We can take a straight edge and see how the material is curving in the direction the metal was drawn through the wheels. (8) We can also see that the material stayed flat from left to right because both of the wheels are flat across their width. (9) As the sheet metal is drawn back and forth through the wheel, the wheels need to track left to right and/ or right to left across the workpiece. When people first use an English wheel they will typically fight against the wheels and struggle to keep a fluid rhythm. This is something that just requires practice. In the same way pinstripe artists practice pulling lines, you can much the same way practice drawing sheet metal through the English wheel. I’ve taken this sheet and drawn a zigzag pattern across the length of the material, spaced in a 1-inch-wide pattern and half-inch pattern. (10) Use a layout like this to practice drawing in and out while tracking left to right and back again to develop a rhythm. (11) Next, we’ll try a radiused lower die. Take notice of the narrow contact patch between it and the upper wheel face. (12) Again, with the same type of motion, draw the material back and forth through the upper and lower wheel. (13/14) With added pressure the material once again begins to shape around the lower wheel.

(15) With a straight edge you’ll see the material curving lengthwise again. (16) However, we will also see the material forming around the radius of the lower die left to right as well. (17) If we draw the material through the wheels again perpendicular to the first draw pattern (18/19), we’ll find the material will begin to take on a lot more shape. (20/21) With more pressure and more passes through the wheel, it will continue to take more shape. However, the center of the material will stretch to a point that will require some shrinking on the edges of the material. The piece will become stressed by the excessive stretching and will begin to look like a potato chip. One way to eliminate the potato-chip effect is to shrink the edge of the piece prior to shaping in the wheel. For this we’ll go back to what

we learned in past issues. Using a mallet and stump we can begin to put shape to the piece and shrink the edges. (22) We’ll want to choose a lower die with a radius that closely matches the radius of the workpiece. (23) Here we can see after just a few minutes the left side of the piece has started to become smooth in comparison to the untouched right side. (24) With continued work drawing the piece through the wheel across its radius all the way around, we can achieve a pretty smooth finish. (25) You can see here that the workpiece matches the radius of the lower die, and we have done as much work with this die as we can. (26) If we need to shape the piece further, we would need to go to a tighter radiused lower die. However, for the purposes of this demonstration, you can see we have produced a uniform and smooth raised surface. It’s all been done with a single wooden mallet on the forming stump and a single radius die in the English wheel. That is a lot of shape with minimal tools. If you try these three exercises, you should have a good understanding of the basics when shaping with an English wheel. Don’t be discouraged if it takes you some time to develop a smooth rhythm. Like most things, it just takes practice. In the next installments of the column we are going to look at making a shaping buck and pattern-making techniques. If you have questions or requests for future issues, send me an email at joe@snap-fab.com. HB

his USA-made cut is made from supreme cowhide leather with a heavily constructed water-repellent nylon liner. Inside the vest features two inner pockets, and the whole thing closes up snugly with a number 10 YKK-brand zipper and hidden brass snaps. Outside the HA leather cut has a pair of deep chest pockets with snap flaps. The construction and fit of this vest is very nice. I would suffice to say that the fit is pretty true to what your T-shirt size would be. The vest took a bit of time to break in, but now it feels as if it were custom made. I did go up one size from my normal jacket size due to the fact that I always run a hoodie under it. If you are looking for a top-quality American-made vest at a reasonable price, you should for sure check out the full line of HA Leather. $349 // HALEATHERUSA.COM

he First Mfg. Co. Lowside is an ultra-short vest made from soft 1.4mm heavy-gauge cowhide. Outside the Lowside has two external front snap pockets and two zippered slash pockets. The vest also has covered snaps and a hidden all-black YKK main zipper with blacked-out hardware. Inside the cut is an interior cell phone pocket as well as two concealed carry pockets with unique bullet snaps. I like that First Mfg. Co. makes an off-the-shelf shorty vest this length, as they usually have to be custom ordered with these dimensions. This vest broke in quickly, and I found it fits pretty snug, so definitely go up a size if you want to run anything but a T-shirt under it. All in all, this is a great-quality imported vest with all the features you would want at a good price. $249 // FIRSTMFG.COM

was convinced by the local dealer—High Desert H-D in Meridian, Idaho—to put together a hooligan bike to ride in a local indoor race. Here she is! Baker six-speed with electric start, kicker, jockey shifter, and suicide foot clutch. The frame, springer front end, and wheels are original equipment and now have over 234,000 miles. The rear fender is two fenders welded together to close the gap to the rear tire without lowering the bike for a better ride. Disc brakes on both wheels and primary and secondary belts for a smooth ride. I put an internal throttle and grips off of my 1970 Shovelhead that I bought in 1979. I also hid the master cylinder in between the gas tanks and made all the linkage, pivots, and reservoir for the FXR slave cylinder I used. The foot clutch is hydraulic with matching old-school master cylinder and pedals for it and the rear brake. The exhaust is shotgun fishtails with three-bolt flanges to connect to the heads more securely. On the left side of the bike the belt drive is covered with a Paughco tin primary cover, and a teardrop toolbox was added for roadside repairs. The backrest and travel bag are removable. The cat-eye dash was mated to the original dash panel, speedo, and ignition switch. The paint is gloss black and was done by a local paint shop, and I did the rest. The best part about the bike is after 234,000 miles I still get excited every time I ride it. KEN ELIAS Colombia, MO

GEICO Motorcycle Insurance –

e cl cy r o t o m m o st cu a g in r Insu We asked GEICO Motorcycle Insurance five questions to better understand what is needed to protect you and your motorcycle.

This?

How is the value of my motorcycle assessed? The value of your motorcycle is determined based on its actual cash value at the time of loss. Cash value is the replacement cost, less its depreciation due to things like physical wear and tear, age, or other causes. Actual cash value is determined based on the sale prices of similar vehicles in your local area.

What is the difference in insuring a ground-up custom versus a modified stock motorcycle?

Or that?

Since a ground-up custom motorcycle tends to have one-of-a-kind parts, it is typically more expensive to insure versus a factorymanufactured motorcycle. We include some level of coverage for customized parts or equipment under Physical Damage Coverage for no additional premium. The limit of coverage afforded will vary by state. You have the option to increase the amount of coverage for custom parts for an additional premium.

How is paint’s value insured? OEM paint is insured as part of the stock bike. Custom paint will be limited to $500 in most states. For one-of-a-kind, ground-up custom bikes, the paint job completed at the initial build is considered OEM and would not be limited by the custom paint sublimit.

Does your insurance company know the difference? Call GE ICO for a quote.

What about modified stock parts? Is something like engraved engine cases or fork legs covered by my insurance? Modifications are covered in the event of a covered loss up to the accessory limits on the policy.

Is my bike covered when being towed or hauled? Yes, with the appropriate Physical Damage Coverage on the policy.

Go to geico.com or call 800.442.9253.

KEEPING UP WITH TUNING TECHNOLOGIES

T

he options Harley riders enjoy when it comes to choosing a tuning device for their bikes, or even not buying one as we recently detailed with mention of Dynojet’s Power Vision Tune License Program, are constantly expanding. Technology marches on. That Tune License Program, by the way, eliminates the need

to actually purchase a Power Vision, a sweet deal and certainly the costeffective route to a custom dyno tune. (For a full explanation take a look at the Speed’s Spotlight in the April issue.) But any tuning device chosen, be it a Power Commander, Power Vision, that licensing program, or something else, is only half the story of an up-todate dyno tune and the custom map it creates. The other half, of course, is the equipment, both hardware and software, that the tuning specialist is using to interpret and manipulate all that enginemanagement information, turning it all into that custom-written map allowing a Harley to perform at its best. “And we’re constantly upgrading our equipment toward that end,” says Jamie Hanson at Speed’s Performance Plus. Besides taking advantage of every advanced-user class and tuning seminar offered by the manufacturers of the actual dynamometers they use and the software packages those dynos require, the techs at SPP are careful to stay up to date with all that equipment and its software. Case in point, the next time you see that big black truck at an event you’ll see an all-new tuning center, a new truck, and new trailer. And inside that trailer there’s an all-new and totally up-to-date dynamometer, a Dynojet 250i with DynoWare RT electronics, and running the very latest software, Dynojet’s Power Core with WinPEP 8, the newest operating system. What does all this mean to the rider of a motorcycle tuned with all this, the actual end-user of all this new technology? “Any custom map we write is going to be far more accurate now because it’ll be a map built off more accurate information to start with,”

90 / HOTBIKE.COM

Jamie explains. With what result? “Don’t expect miracles” he says with a laugh, “like some tremendous difference in horsepower or torque numbers. It’s not like we’re now magically going to find 5 or 7 more horsepower that was previously hidden by an older dyno and its software.” But what all this new equipment and tuning methods will find is a decidedly smoother-running motorcycle, a coolerrunning motorcycle, and a motorcycle that’s just that little bit better all around—along with significantly increased data accuracy and the tighter tune it’ll produce, all of this can happen faster than ever too. That new Power Core system, using an ether-cable connection in place of the old nine-pin setup, is able to better transfer and receive information with an added benefit of tuning the front and rear cylinders simultaneously. That comes thanks to the new AFR-2 Dual Air/Fuel Measuring System, a far more accurate method of measuring the motorcycle’s air/fuel ratio. In place of the old-style “sniffer tube” inserted up the tailpipe Power Core acquires its information from a set of specialized sensors screwed into the bike’s 18mm sensor ports if it’s so equipped. And if no port is available on the headpipes a “Stealth Extraction” setup takes its place. With this the dyno operator removes the motorcycle’s heatshields and drills two small holes in the headpipes to insert those Stealth fittings, fittings which are removed and the holes plugged after the tune is completed. The benefit of all this, increased

accuracy, comes from the location of those sensors. They’re now positioned much closer to the exhaust ports and far closer to the cylinder heads than any tailpipe sniffer could ever reach. The closer you are to the exhaust ports the more accurate the air/fuel ratio reading, and the more accurate the reading the more accurate the tune. There’s more, too, like the switch from “sweep testing” to “step testing” during the dyno tune, but suffice it to say, without getting too deep into the technical weeds here, the new equipment SPP is now using to tune bikes is head and shoulders above its predecessor. Riders have options when it comes to choosing the device used to customtune their bike. But for the best results that’s only half the story. Just as important, maybe even more important to the eventual outcome, is the skill and knowledge of the technician doing that tune and the equipment, both hardware and software, he’s using. “It’s critical to keep up to date with all of that,” Jamie concludes. “That’s why we’re using what we’re using now. It’s the most comprehensive, sophisticated, and the most accurate system available. Bottom line, it just helps us do a better job.” Next time that big SPP tuning center is at an event nearby, stop by and have a look for yourself. Technology in the right hands is a wonderful thing. RIDERS ON THE TECHNO THOROUGHFARE

“T

echnology is best when it brings people together,” said Matthew C. Mullenweg, an acclaimed online social media entrepreneur and web developer. I wholeheartedly agree with this, especially the technology that is applied to the motorcycle community. The technology I’m referring to is not even related to actual motorcycles. While the machines have improved quite a bit and made the “knees in the breeze” experience more user friendly, it’s other kinds of technology that I feel have really gotten people together in amazing ways in the two-wheeled universe. Twenty years ago, things such as smartphones, social media, apps, websites, and internet forums barely existed or were non-existent. All these have helped motorcyclists from all over the world communicate to share mechanical info, parts, riding routes, events, and where to find the coldest beer, among other things. Looking for some periodcorrect parts for a 1948 Panhead? One could put out some feelers or search on various forums, social media outlets, and online marketplace sites to find items for that classic Milwaukee iron from around the world within a handful of minutes. How about information on that

92 / HOTBIKE.COM

dream ride across Europe you’ve always wanted to do? Same thing—whip out your smartphone or laptop, research to your heart’s content, and very quickly you will have a who, what, when, and where ironed out ASAP. Want to share a bitchin’ ride you just did in the Smoky Mountains with your friends? Yeah, you can do that. There are apps that will track your route via GPS and record every bit of data you could imagine so your pals can be envious or re-trace your ride at another time. You can also share that ride with the use of POV cameras that can be mounted on bike, helmet, or body. The video footage and photos from these cameras can be downloaded very quickly to your smartphone and shared with your buddies near and far literally moments after it happens.

Bikes to borrow, beds to rest in, and roads to rip on have all been arranged through some DM’ing with new digital friends that become real-life friends. Virtually none of this would have been possible a couple decades ago. Thank you, technology, for bringing us handlebar miscreants together for some next-level escapades. HB
