Love your home this Spring... Spring is a wonderful time to look around your home with new eyes. With the longer days and the natural daylight there is a real opportunity to both clean and tidy, and with your newly discovered space to start to create the home that you really want. Can you remember when you first rented, or bought your current property and those moments of clear space before your possessions arrived! Look around now, how much empty space still exists? It is often said to really appreciate something you need white space around it, but it’s very easy to lose precious areas of space with the clutter of everyday living. The more crowded your environment, the less space you have to appreciate the beautiful items that you cherish. One of the hardest tasks to start is clearing your clutter, and the reason for this is that it can seem a chore; and when you have a busy life full of either work pressures, family responsibilities, or juggling both, chores are a challenge. At the end of a busy week when you reach the weekend, most of us just want to slip into the soft fluffy pillow of relaxation, and clearing your clutter in addition to the normal household cleaning is not top of our agenda. If it is not urgent and essential, it’s very easy to put it off to another day. However it is impossible to ignore the popularity of Marie Kondo, her first book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying, presented her
unique tidying philosophy and introduced readers to the basics of her KonMari method. In her second book Spark Joy, Marie Kondo says, “Only two skills are necessary to successfully put your house in order: the ability to keep what sparks joy and chuck the rest, and the ability to decide where to keep each thing that you choose and always put it back in its place. The important thing in tidying is not deciding what to discard, but rather what you want to keep in your life. It is my hope that the magic of tidying will help you create a bright and joyful future” Marie Kondo is now also featured in a Netflix Original series “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo”. Marie’s natural enthusiasm is very engaging, and the results can be very liberating, but clearing your clutter is only the start. Once you reduce your clutter it is important to also create a clean and healthy environment for you, your family and those items that you have chosen to have in your life. Spring is a great time to deep clean, general wear and tear and shredding from pets and airborne dust means that our homes very easily gain a build up of bacteria and general grime. Cleaning carpets and upholstery ideally with a machine that is effective and dries quickly means that your rooms look and feel fresher.
Feature
One of the recently published books that we really recommend to help you achieve this clean and healthy environment is Natural Living Style by Selina Lake. In this book she reveals how to create a beautiful and stylish home that is as natural, plastic-free and sustainable as possible. She suggests ways of living simply, mindful consumption, recycling, upcycling and reducing plastic waste. She looks at materials suited to the natural living look, including wood, bamboo, cork, recycled glass and upcycled materials. She also focuses on organic fabrics, fibres such as coir and rattan and eco-friendly paints. Throughout, eco-friendly tips and hints will inspire those who want to lighten their footprint on the planet. In her Natural Resources section she suggests ways that readers can obtain the look and create a sustainable, eco-friendly home of their own. Another way of lifting your environment and also improving your health is by careful use of plants. In The RHS Practical House Plant Book, there is a chapter about ‘Designing for Wellbeing’ suggesting that plants are capable of lowering our stress levels, filling our homes with fragrance and even ridding the air we breathe of harmful pollutants. It helpfully categorises the different plants for different pollutants. If you suffer particularly with the air quality in your home you may wish to consider an air purifier. At the end of this feature we list suggested products to help you maintain a clean and healthy environment. Once you have tidied and cleaned, and set up a routine to maintain your new space you can return to the
pleasure of designing your ‘bright and joyful future.’ With a fresh eye look at your home and your favourite items; can you identify your style? Does your home welcome you, help you to relax and reflect your personality? One of our favourite books is the wonderfully inspiring Maison – Parisian Chic at Home by Ines de la Fressange, and Marin Montagut. This has been a previous Hot Brands Cool Places Book of the Month and is a constant source of joy. We particularly love the subtlety of the presentation of the book, even the book jacket unfolds into a mood poster to inspire readers to ‘infuse their homes with Parisian chic and elegance’. There is so much detail, not just in the stunning photography, but in the inspiring advice, the gorgeous mood boards, Marin’s watercolours throughout, the colour palettes and the beautiful illustrations in the ‘Get the Look’ which follow each in-depth look at the homes. In this book, all the Parisians who opened their doors “had a guiding principle of combining everything, the new with the old, the sophisticated with the antiquated, the luxurious with the simple. All the elements that prove that a twenty-first-century style does indeed exist, reflected in interiors that are elegant, poetic and eclectic.”
And it is this essence of style, which provides such a wonderful opportunity for you to create your own space. Maison is full of beautiful and subtle colours, which effortlessly blend together to create a restful and harmonious palette. When choosing your backgrounds think about the walls and the fabrics that create your home. If you are in rented property and you are unable to do anything to the walls try using wall-hangings, screens, art and curtains that can personalise your home for you. While not wishing to introduce more clutter into your home, once you have a clearer idea of your style, you will be more selective about the special items that you want to bring into your home. Go to auctions, visit antique and vintage fairs, look in charity shops, the joy of the search means that when you finally find that perfect item it will mean so much more. It’s not just inside your home, even the smallest garden or balcony can provide daily sources of happiness. Increasingly people are recognizing that their garden space can be an extension of their home, during the recent hot summers, families are using their outside spaces late into the evening. With creative planting it’s possible to develop your own micro gardens, growing a wide variety of plants and vegetables, however small your space. Using attractive pots also means that if you do move, you can take them with you.
and kitchens to bathrooms and living rooms as well as a wide range of items in different categories, including clothes, photographs, paperwork, books, cutlery, cosmetics, shoes, bags, wallets and valuables. Charming line drawings explain how to properly organise drawers, wardrobes, cupboards and cabinets. The illustrations also show Ms Kondo’s unique folding method, clearly showing how to fold anything from shirts, trousers and jackets to skirts, socks and bras. The secret to Marie Kondo’s unique and simple KonMari tidying method is to focus on what you want to keep, not what you want to get rid of. Ask yourself if something ‘sparks joy’ and suddenly it becomes so much easier to understand if you really need it in your home and your life. When you surround yourself with things you love you will find that your whole life begins to change. Marie Kondo’s first book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying, presents her unique tidying philosophy and introduces readers to the basics of her KonMari method. It has already transformed the homes and lives of millions of people around the world. Spark Joy is Marie Kondo’s in-depth tidying masterclass, focusing on the detail of how to declutter and organise your home. https://www.amazon.co.uk/
Our most recent Book of the Month is How to Create Your Garden by Adam Frost, full of ideas and advice for transforming your outdoor space. As well as the really helpful guidance we love Adam’s quotes throughout the book, e.g. “Just like a painter uses a palette, you’ll be using your palette of plants to create lovely compositions in your garden.” These words really do resonate, if you create an outside space, which is full of colour, easy to manage, and a place to rest and reflect, it can bring another level of contentment into your life. Whether you are creating a garden for the first time, or want to revitalise your existing garden this is a most inspiring book, we absolutely loved it. Spring is a wonderful time of year, full of promise and optimism, and helping your home to sparkle again means that you can settle back and enjoy it for months to come! INSPIRATION

Finally, she shows how to style the home using lighting, decorative objects, vintage pieces, garden flowers and house plants. In the second section, Natural Living Spaces, Selina shows how sustainability and style can go hand in hand in living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, home offices and even utility rooms. In The Natural Garden, she steps outside to discuss green gardening, growing your own produce and venturing further afield to camp, travel and explore. Throughout, eco-friendly tips and hints will inspire those who want to lighten their footprint on the planet. For parents, and increasingly grandparents, school holidays can be a challenge, everyone wants to keep their children safe and happy and to spend quality time together, but organising it can need careful planning. For working parents having this additional time can be a uggle, especialy if you are running your own business there is still the need to keep the business running, if employed most parents want to save their days for a longer summer holiday. Older teenagers will be revising for their exams, or worrying about not having revised enough!
Younger children without the structure of the school day, go through a number of energy surges, when one moment they appear absorbed n something and yet moments later can be bouncing off the ceiling saying they are bored!
One way to managed this is to build in some scheduled treats and outings, these can be a mixture of events which are known, but also some surprises as well for variety and to break up the day.
If parents are working some family outings can be organised for the evenings, trips to a restaurant for an 'early bird' meal followed by some board games or watching a film, or other shared activity at home can provide a special end to the day.
With the longer evenings, if you live near the coast, bundling every one up in warm clothes for a walk on the beach followed by a fish and chip supper, or running off some excess energy playing games on the beach followed by hot drinks wrapped up in blankets watching the sunset can be a memory to treasure.
During other days encourage a slower pace to emerge, helping children relax is an important life skill, and planning more contemplative activities can encourage this. Be aware too of the mportance of a balanced and healthy diet and the impact on their behaviour when this balance is not maintained. Also keep children well hydrated, whether outside or in the home, it's very easy for hours to pass without them drinking any water. ISSUEËš65
One fun way of organising activities is to create 'Our Day in a Hat’ the premise is very simple, provide small pieces of paper and a pen or pencil for everyone and encourage them to write two or three activities, (one activity per piece of paper) that they would like to do that day and fold up the paper carefully and put into a hat. For the first few attempts, they may need guidance, but after a few goes everyone normally understands what is possible and realistic, and sometimes it is the simple things that bring most joy, e.g. Baking, playing a favourite board game, having a facial or other pamper activity, watching a favourite film. Importantly adults get to take part too, and it's perfectly acceptable to put in some quiet activities! Once all the pieces of paper are in the hat, they are pulled out one at a time and the day is planned. The theory is that everyone gets a chance to do a favourite activity, and as a family you enjoy time together. As part of your preparation for the school holidays, try and stock up with craft materials, there are so many crafting books or online tutorials that you can use for inspiration, the secret is to be prepared with a range of materials. Equally baking can be a lot of fun and special tea parties can be organised. Now is a perfect time to involve children in the garden, there is something quite magical about planting seeds and watching them grow and even eating their own vegetables. Try and choose seeds that germinate quickly, planting sunflowers can also be fun and produce colourful results. As well as indoor activities try and plan some special days out, many tourist attractions will be opening for Easter and will have organised events.
