Paul Carberry, founder of New Zealand in Depth, shares his tips on the best way to extend your summer
INTERVIEW 4
If you’re dreaming of an Indian summer and are not quite ready to embrace the cooler autumn months, then turn your attention to New Zealand where spring is in the air. New born lambs are frolicking, the days are getting longer, the weather’s getting hotter and there’s new growth and blossom on the trees. We caught up with Paul Carberry, founder of the specialist travel company New Zealand in Depth, to find out how best to extend the summer with a trip down under: What are your recommendations for travellers heading to New Zealand this Autumn? Our autumn is New Zealand’s spring and it’s a brilliant time for anyone interested in nature and wildlife. The birds are active and breeding and you also avoid the crowds. Motuara Island in the Marlborough Sounds is a treasure trove of birdlife. You can also see penguins, tui, bellbird and saddlebacks to name a few. Go to Lake Moeraki on the west coast of the South Island to see Fiordland Crested Penguins. They’re the 2nd rarest penguin on the planet and return every year to the area to nest. Alternatively head over to Waiheke Island to go wine tasting. It’s just a 35 minute ferry ride from Auckland, and it has pristine beaches and its own temperate micro-climate, making it the perfect place to start your holiday. What’s your own favourite place in New Zealand and why? Fiordland is incredible. Everyone has heard of Milford Sound but we send a lot of clients to Doubtful Sound, which is 10 times larger and just as magical. In spring the waterfalls are full and really dramatic. Lake Wanaka is the perfect place to simply relax. The mountain scenery is spectacular and there are some great day walks nearby. For me though I’d have to pick Stewart Island, which sits beneath the South Island. There’s so much space, so few people and it is teeming with flora, fauna and birdlife. It’s almost an untouched wilderness. What are your key tips to planning a trip? It’s definitely about focusing on your interests. We spend a lot of time just listening to our clients, and finding out what they enjoy. Anyone who’s been to New Zealand will rave about its beauty and make must-do recommendations, but what works for one person may not work for the next. Napier, for example, is an incredible place to visit if you are interested in Art Deco, but if not then maybe wine tasting in the Marlborough region or whale watching in Kaikoura may be of more interest. One of the benefits of specialising in just one country is that we are able to completely commit to it. It’s a bit of a joke but I probably know New Zealand better than Cheshire and Derbyshire where I’ve lived for most of my life. Over the years I’ve forged strong friendships with the people on the ground who will host my clients at their accommodation or on a guiding trip. We all get to know each other and can form a bond, a triangle of trust and understanding. It means we know our clients are getting the very best experiences. What do you love most about the country? I suppose the obvious thing to say would be the forests, the mountains and the wild coastlines and the fact that you can easily access the wilderness and appreciate the scale, emptiness and peace of the country. New Zealand is about the same size as the UK but has 7% of the population and a third of those people live in Auckland, the largest city. Often when you’re on a beach you’ll wonder why nobody else there. I also love the three Ws of wildlife, walking and wine but if I had to choose one thing it would be the people. People from New Zealand are so relaxed, friendly and hospitable and also so proud of their country and want to share it with visitors. People in supermarkets, cafes and petrol stations will take the time to talk to you and ask where you are from and where you are going. I think this is why so many of my clients visit for 5 their once in a lifetime holiday and then just have to go back.
What does New Zealand in Depth offer travellers? Our approach is all about offering a genuine personal service and sharing our expertise. Actually one of the best bits of getting to know our clients so well is hearing their feedback after their trip. It’s brilliant to hear what they’ve enjoyed, where they’ve eaten and to see their photos. We also work very hard to be a travel company with a conscience. We support a number of conservation initiatives in New Zealand and many of the activities we recommend are done on a “not for profit basis” to help locals protect endangered wildlife. http://www.newzealandindepth.com/

Getting away from it all this Autumn After the fun and relaxation of the summer holidays it’s very easy to fall back into the stresses of work and school, but it’s also important to try and keep that spirit and joie de vivre alive. Children also feel stressed and tired by frustrating friendships, homework and other concerns. By planning regular treats and fun family occasions there is an opportunity to stimulate their imagination and leave the technology behind. Like setting time aside for a ‘date night’ as a couple why not plan ‘family play dates’ during the autumn and winter when you recreate the fun and relaxation of the summer holidays. Although taking holidays in school terms is difficult there are opportunities for shorter weekend breaks. You may also find that a school in-service day can extend the half-term break, or can provide the opportunity for an impromptu escape. Plan mid-week family meals out, have craft weekends. There may be craft centres near you that hold workshops see if they offer family discounts. Sometimes large hotels that are used by business visitors during the week, offer reduced rates at the weekend for families, and children love the in-house facilities. Why not treat them to a pamper or activity session? Many seaside locations are now open all year but the advantage is that there are more rooms and weekend deals available and also less people. There is nothing quite like a visit to the coast on an unexpectedly sunny autumn or winter’s day. The National Trust and English Heritage are great sources of all year round entertainment as are all the regional and local tourist information centres. Many of the companies in our Directory offer Autumn and Winter breaks, it’s also never too early to start planning for a special holiday in 2017, often there is more choice the earlier you book. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk http://www.english-heritage.org.uk http://www.hotbrandscoolplaces.com 14

Learn something new this Autumn FEATURE
As we approach the end of the summer holidays, pencils are being sharpened, pencil cases loaded, bags are being packed as the children return to their studies. But Autumn brings another learning opportunity and this time it’s for adults. Up and down the country as September approaches there are many opportunities to learn a new skill or hobby. Our television screens show inspiring programmes like The Great British Bake Off, The Great British Sewing Bee, The Great Pottery Throw Down and The Big Allotment Challenge where people have the opportunity to showcase their talents; however before they are ready to do that they need to learn the skills. If you have ever been inspired to learn a new skill now is a great time to start. Local authorities often have Adult Learning Centres and if you search for local courses you will be amazed at the variety of courses available, everything from sewing to bread making to learning a foreign language. If you have been inspired by the Olympics coverage your local Sports Centre is another place to investigate. The advantage of going out for classes is that you move away from the sofa and technology and meet other people, they are often a great social event and really something to look forward to each week as an escape from the day to day routine. Who knows where this new skill may lead? 21
It may remain a hobby, you may start a new business selling your creations at local markets, or we may even see you on the television! There has never been a better time to be inspired! There are also local experts who run courses and workshops.
