Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Emma Trigg, Founder of The Treasure Trove for an exclusive interview

INTERVIEW 6

What inspired you to set up The Treasure Trove? It was really a long anticipated change in lifestyle that inspired me and my partner Christian to set up The Treasure Trove. Having moved from London down to Brighton in 2010, I managed the commute back to the City for a couple of years and over that time, began planning the change in career from Office Manager, to running my own shabby chic furniture business. Inspired by a love of vintage furniture and home interiors and years of rummaging car boot fairs and auctions around the country, it was time to make our weekend hobby a full time reality. I attended painting courses and obtained a small business unit to store the furniture we had started to acquire, and before I knew it, my City days were over and The Treasure Trove had begun! What does a typical week look like for you? Fortunately, no week is ever the same at The Treasure Trove, but you can usually find me attending one of the auctions around Sussex, sourcing beautiful new items for the website. Once I’ve found those special pieces, its then time to get my paint brushes out and create a unique and individual look for each piece. I spend quite a few hours trawling the internet or popping into local antique shops for inspiration. Once painted, I create a set in our workshop and photograph each piece, uploading all the information and pictures to our website and social media. Aside from selling our furniture online, we also offer a ‘Custom Paint Service’, for customers looking to update their own furniture if it no longer fits with their current interior design. I get to meet our customers face-to-face and discuss how I’m going to transform their piece. Sometimes, if the furniture is too large to move, then I’ll paint at my customer’s house, which is really great for getting a feel for the customer’s style. What excites you about sourcing and up-styling furniture? For me, it’s all about the transformation. I love the fact that each piece has its own history and once provided a function in a previous life, quite often as far back as the Victorian and Edwardian era! The quality and workmanship of these pieces really is incredible considering we are still able to use them today, it’s a true testament to those makers. I love the creativity and freedom that upcycling gives you. It probably sounds strange, but when I look at a piece of furniture, it really tells me what’s going to enhance its look! How would you like The Treasure Trove to develop? As a relatively new business, it hasn’t been possible for my partner Christian to work directly with me on the business, but it hopefully won’t be long until he comes on-board. With more resource, we’d ideally like to start working directly with interior designers on their projects and expand our ‘sourcing service’ for both designers and our customers. We’d also love to start our ‘vintage finds’ collection on the website and start creating some of our own unique items, using reclaimed materials. More than anything, we’d still like The Treasure Trove to be providing beautifully bespoke shabby chic and vintage furniture well into the future!

What advice would you give to someone looking to change their lifestyle? “Just do it!” I can honestly say, I’ve never been happier since realising my dream. It’s an incredible journey of personal learning and self-development which doesn’t seem to stop, and although it’s not all plain sailing, the rewards far outweigh any bad days. Even if things don’t work out, I always think it’s better to give something a go and have that experience … you never know, it could lead to another avenue you wouldn’t have thought of previously! What makes a perfect weekend for you? Taking advantage of the beautiful Sussex countryside is always a must and we love a seaside walk or meeting up with friends and family over a glass of wine! Currently, we have our hands full with a long awaited home renovation project and extension. I am so excited about the interior design … there are so many beautiful things out there. I will definitely be checking out HotBrandsCoolPlaces Home & Garden feature for inspiration! http://www.thetreasuretrove.co.uk/

INTERVIEW

12

Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Angela Le Baigue, Founder of Chantillie House for an exclusive interview. What inspired you to set up Chantillie House ? A love and a passion for anything interiors. A change of career and a burning desire to create a business that I truly loved. You have just opened a shop, how have you enjoyed your first few months of trading? I was really surprised as I thought it would be a real slow burn especially in a small place like Moffat. I was always told to hang tight as it is traditionally a tourist town and that trade will start early spring, but to be honest it’s trading well and I have seen an increase on web-site sales too. Chantillie House was a new change of career for you, how did you prepare for it? That’s what was great about it, I had spent years in publishing down in London, but then met my partner Matthew, moved home and had a beautiful daughter Jasmine. I realised I could no longer continue commuting up and down the country or working for someone else. Having my daughter was a turning point in my life, I didn’t want not to be at home with her as she was my miracle baby and I wanted to enjoy her as much as possible. I decided to give up my career and focus on re-training but for something I was truly passionate about. I was lucky enough to be in a position to spend the years with Jasmine before school but to also study Interior Design. I originally started building the on-line business for Chantillie House in August 2013 but by December Ist had opened my first shop ,as I found my clients wanting to see the products as the scale and quality is not always apparent on-line. How do you know if a product is right for your collection? As I had spent a great deal of time over the years in London watching new designers and trends and at that time I spent nearly every week in Harrods, Harvey Nichols or Selfridges knowing their stock better than they did. I pretty much knew which way I wanted to go. I watched Terrance Conran and Tricia Guild build their empires in Chelsea and had a passion for the William Yeoward and Ralph Lauren collections. So I knew it had to be high style, glamorous with beautiful fabrics- a mix of modern meets old with some quirky pieces for fun. Most of my collection is European influenced but I like to buy British where I can. My passion at the moment is faux flowers so I’m busy preparing a collection for my shop, there is so much around these days to make buying inspiring. What are your hopes for your business in 2014? As it is early days, my hope is business will continue to grow and I might at some point be able to offer more jobs locally. The Town has been need of regenerating its shops for a while so it was well received by locals and businesses. As on-line trends go I hope it continues but it’s nice to have both. What makes a perfect weekend for you? My daughter , my partner, a glass of wine, and a chat with my girlfriends. http://www.chantilliehouse.com/

Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Jane Coverdale, Founder of Red Lilly for an exclusive interview.

INTERVIEW 20

What inspired you to create Red Lilly? It seemed a natural progression after over a decade of sourcing and designing home wares for prestigious as well as smaller boutique stores we wanted a fresh challenge and a chance to use our product knowledge, to dabble with product styling and create an online store that acquired product from local as well as far flung places so started Red Lilly in 2010. What are the key influencers in the selection of your ranges? We select products with the idea of creating a collection of beautiful, unusual and sometimes indulgent home wares which touch on current trends and enhance the home. We like to travel and our original wholesale company sourced purely from the Far East probably spurred on by the intriguing curiosities my Dutch grandmother decorated her home with from her life in Indonesia. We still have product from far flung places such as Bali and Marrakech but also like the simplicity and style of Scandinavian brands and the idiosyncrasy of homegrown British labels. We are focused to work with companies that have that extra aspect to them as it’s not only about how good the product is but also how it is generated. So we seek more and more to have environmentally sound or cooperatively made items in our ranges. What can accessories add to a home? The home is a space where accessories can reflect your personality, bring comfort, spur memories of past experience and of course be whimsical and playful. We love finding items for all ages to enjoy and give your interior an edge over the rest. As Le Corbusier said “The home should be the treasure chest of living” so accumulate to stimulate I’d say! What do you see as the key advantages in online shopping? Online is great for convenience, choice and inspiration. Our site is easy to navigate to find products for you, a special event or gifts with a quick delivery. The products once arrived enhance the experience as everyone likes opening a box and be delighted with its contents! How would you like to develop your brand? We are looking forward to spreading the word about Red Lilly by working more with online blogs to shout about new products. Also intend to expand our jewellery, garden and children ranges and work more with British small makers as well as sourcing occasionally overseas for exotic finds to give the site a specialised slant. What makes a perfect weekend for you? A little road trip to big skies and beaches in north Norfolk with good food and chat. http://www.redlilly.co.uk/

INTERVIEW

Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Carole Gannon, Founder of Blue Isle for an exclusive interview What inspired you to create Blue Isle? I worked as a Chartered Building Surveyor in London for many years, drawing and refurbishing houses and dealing with the structure and ‘nuts and bolts’ side, and working with some well known interior designers, but was always inspired by the finishing details, and what a difference the end furnishing could make to a project . A move to the country a few years ago brought an idea for a change of career, and sourcing furniture and accessories of good design and price, was something I had experience of, and I decided to establish Blue Isle and develop a small online collection. My daughter is a student of art history and fine and decorative arts, and she has been the creative inspiration behind Blue Isle Do you have particular favourites in your range? I love our cool , crisp linen buttoned sofa. Its such a classic and very pleasing shape, with small beech legs and square, buttoned back and sides - very unfussy and it works with either a traditional or a very contemporary interior as it’s so simple and timeless. Why is it important to you to use traditional methods to create your products? We wanted to use solid wood and linen in our collection, and the styles we have chosen involve a lot of hand carving, and proper wood joints, which just can’t be mass produced. Our collection is very design-led, and the look and quality we want to achieve that can only be achieved using traditional methods. How do you know if a product is right for your collection? We have a small collection at the moment, which we hope to grow. The look of all of our pieces so far, isn’t all the same: some are really quite contemporary like the sofa, and our tables with metal frames and reclaimed tops giving a more ‘industrial’ feel, whilst some of our oak pieces would better suit a more traditional look. But at the moment, they all have solid wood in common, which is either our signature ‘white weathered oak’, or lovely salvaged and re-finished woods. So we know a product is right if the design fits into our ethos of ‘timeless style’, and if the look is right. What are your hopes for your business in 2014? Having recently got going, we really want to consolidate in 2014 – introduce new customers to our collection, and grow our ‘newsletter’ database, because we run a lot of very good promotions and give special codes to our subscribers, and we would like to spread the word about that. What makes a perfect weekend for you? A weekend here in the country with my husband and hopefully, my daughter home from her busy life in London; digging in the garden, and the company of our lovely dog and cat, chickens and bees, and the lovely air and light of the New Forest. http://www.blueisle.co.uk/

INTERVIEW

Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Linzi Brown, Founder of Dangly Hearts for an exclusive interview. What inspired you to set up Dangly Hearts? My Mum taught me to sew as a child, (in fact my aunty still has a needle case I made aged around 8!), and I always enjoyed creating items from fabric. To turn a pile of fabric pieces into something new, pretty and useful I find a real joy. I have spent 16 years as a staff nurse in general surgery and during this time I used sewing as a form of relaxation. I created gifts for friends and family and gradually they began asking me to make things for them to give, turning this into a business has been a natural progression albeit with a steep learning curve!!! I have always loved hearts and all things hearty and hearts usually featured in my makes. It amused my husband, Jason (who now works for Dangly Hearts full time too), how I could ‘dangle’ hearts and pretty things from just about anywhere so the name ‘Dangly Hearts’ was his idea and stuck. You moved home and your business from the Channel Islands to the UK, what have been the highlights for you? We have been very lucky to have exchanged one beautiful place for another to be our home. The freedom to go somewhere new on a whim is a real pleasure when you have lived on a small island for a long time! Being here has also given us the freedom to develop the business in many different ways. There are a myriad of different events to exhibit at, both locally and nationally, and endless suppliers to choose from, it doesn’t make running a small business in the UK easier than the Channel Islands but it does help with the logistics. Best of all has been being nearer to old friends and family along with meeting many new people and making new friends, it has certainly made leaving our old lives easier. Where do you find inspiration for the new items in your range? I find I’m inspired by the simplest thing, it might be the image of some new fabric and how this could be used in a product or the colours of the forest as I drive home. Recently I came across some new wool fabrics that I am using in a range of cushions, it was the colours that drew me in and how beautifully they blend together. I confess I don’t always know what inspires an idea, I can be sitting watching TV and the next thing an idea springs up, I always keep my sketch book to hand, just in case. How would you like your brand to develop? I would like to see us develop into a lifestyle brand, one that is easily recognisable and coveted! We are in the process of developing new ranges and products at the moment which will feature printed versions of our designs. We are also working hard to increase the number of shops that stock our products to increase exposure of our brand along with developing the website. I am quality driven (and a bit of a perfectionist) and want to make sure that this is maintained throughout the products.

Working for yourself can be a challenge, how do you relax? We live on the edge of the New Forest in Hampshire, being in such a beautiful area means we can get out and walk in beautiful countryside at the drop of a hat. The forest is stunning all year round, the colours and light are fantastic and every day is slightly different, coupled with the ponies and animals that live freely here makes it the perfect place to unwind. I also enjoy gardening, although I have to confess to be a fair weather gardener! What are your hopes for this summer? Kind weather! We are exhibiting at several outdoor events this summer so would be very grateful for some warm sunshine and dry weather. After the very wet winter I’m sure most people feel the same. We hope to be as busy over the next few months as we have been for the last and busier still if possible. I’m excited by the development of our new products and I hope our customers will be too. http://www.danglyhearts.co.uk/
