Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Andrew Gallagher, General Manager, Abercrombie & Kent Villas for an exclusive interview

INTERVIEW 4

For people who may not know, where are the main Abercrombie & Kent Villas destinations? We have clear favourite destinations with many of our valued clients. The top three are France, Italy & Spain. To be a little more specific the most popular regions within these destinations are Cote d’Azur, Provence, Tuscany and Majorca. We also feature villas in Portugal, Greece, Croatia and the UK, plus Ski chalets and hotels in Switzerland, France, Austria and Italy. What do your guests expect from a villa holiday? Our guests can certainly expect the special A&K experience, the insider access and destination knowledge that has been at the very heart of our business since the very beginning. On top of that, guests look to our villas to provide the perfect surroundings in which to relax and share precious time with family and friends. We simply add the perfect finish: by organising the private chef for your anniversary, booking the bikes for your family excursion or having the bottle of Bordeaux waiting for you on arrival. Villa holidays offer space, privacy, local flavor and quite often great savings when travelling with a group of friends or family. Although a villa rental might seem like the luxury you rarely treat yourself to, it is surprising for many to discover that villas turn out to be less expensive than hotels, when the cost is shared. How have you enhanced your offering? Apart from adding new and exciting destinations, such as Croatia, Biarritz in France and Mykonos in Greece, we have expanded our services to offer personalized tours that will bring our guests closer to the culture of the destination. Whether it is gelato-making with your family in Florence, tracing the history of Tuscan towns in a sightseeing tour or creating your own perfume, the possibilities only end with the days you have available. On a wider scale, we also offer wine tastings, vineyard tours, cooking classes, yoga instructors, language tutors, painting lessons and various other activities to enhance the villa stay of our guests. 5

What do you see as the trends for 2016/17? We have seen an increase in multigenerational travel and grandparents looking to take their whole family on holiday. Villa holidays are perfect for families, as they guarantee that everyone can spend quality time together, while at the same time allowing for the space one needs on holiday. Another aspect is the overflow of information accessible through the internet, especially with regards to travel tips. Our guests appreciate having their dedicated A&K Concierge to suggest not just the must-sees, but the best time to visit places and the off-the-beaten-track spots. This service is ideal for those seeking a hassle-free holiday, which becomes increasingly important in our fast-paced world. What special events are happening near your villas this year? There are plenty of events that are not to be missed this year. It starts with the UEFA Euro 2016 in France, which has already started and lasts until the 10th July. Next up, the Tour de France will be a very special event this year, as it passes by Mount Ventoux in Provence on France’s National Day, the 14th July. The ‘Bastille Day’ is of course celebrated with fireworks all over France and it is a great occasion to visit Provence. At the Cote d’Azur, the Jazz Festival in Juan Les Pins is a much celebrated event, not only for those who appreciate jazz. It runs from the 8th July to the 18th July and regularly headlines big names such as Sting, who paid the festival a visit in 2013 and played on a stage directly on the beach; an unforgettable experience. In Italy, the Palio di Siena is the famous horse race taking place on the Piazza del Campo every year on the 2nd July and the 16th August. This thrilling event sees ten ‘contrades’, historically representing the city wards, riding bareback and aiming for the glory of finishing as the first. As this is a popular event which attracts many spectators, it is best seen from one of the buildings around the Piazza, which is where our apartment Vista Siena is located – the ideal place to watch! Where is your favourite holiday destination and why? I own a house in a tranquil the village of Valbonne in the hills few miles from Cannes. I have a young family, so I find having the space and freedom of a villa ideal, while at the same time being close to the activities and the beach of Cannes. http://www.akvillas.com

Focus on The Pier at Harwich

FEATURE 13

What’s been happening at The Pier at Harwich? Following on from a 1.5 million reinvestment over the last 5 months, The Pier at Harwich is once again open and set to become one of East Anglia’s leading coastal destinations for food and drink. Paul Milsom, Milsom Group Managing Director said ‘I am sure I feel very much like my father Gerald did in 1978 when he first opened The Pier restaurant. Proud of the investment we have made in this wonderful building, delighted with the team of hospitality professionals (led by our General Manager, Chris Beardsmore) who we have recruited and excited by the potential of our business here in historic Harwich a town with untapped potential for tourism, particularly as we look forward to 2020 and the celebration of the Harwich association with the Mayflower 400 years ago’. The stripped back and raw textured interior, designed by Geraldine Milsom, makes reference to the industrious and hardworking Harwich port, but achieves a balance between function, luxury and glamour. The harbour wall is only 20 metres from the door and The Pier’s newly extended first floor balcony (for drinks and outdoor dining) overlooks the water, ships and working docks. What can food lovers expect to see on the menu? With estuary views from every table, The Pier, only a stone’s throw from the confluence of the Stour and Orwell estuaries is a very special destination for lovers of great food and drink. The redefined brasserie is located on the first floor of the completely modernised 1860 listed building in historic Harwich. Experience all-day dining (all-year-round) and outdoor dining - whenever the sun shines - with a menu celebrating modern classics, an exciting grill menu and wonderful fresh fish and shellfish landed on The Pier’s doorstep. Guests can select from a predominantly European wine list or enjoy Prosecco-based cocktails, craft beers and cask ales. What’s the history behind the NAVYÄRD Bar? The NAVYÄRD bar and terrace takes its name from the shipyard which built more than 60 vessels between the 17th and 19th century. This industry was at the heart of the Harwich community and in the 19th century when the Great Eastern Railway arrived, it was possible to leave London Liverpool St. Station, arrive in Harwich and be in Rotterdam or Zeebrugge within 14 hours. NAVYÄRD on the ground floor is a continental bar and terrace adjacent to the working harbour, the ideal place for fun and relaxation. Cask ales, craft beers, a great drinks list, Prosecco-based cocktails and one of the most carefully sourced and extensive gin lists makes the NAVYÄRD ‘the’ go-to bar for The Pier’s neighbours, friends and welcomed guests. The NAVYÄRD is undeniably and unashamedly a ‘love letter to the continent’ – celebrating and championing the influential and historic links that Harwich holds with Scandanavia and wider Europe. The wines, beers, ales, drinks list and the gin library are complemented throughout the day by Nordic-inspired small-plated food. Great coffee, fresh pastries and the simplest tastiest late breakfasts (think eggs, rye bread and avocado) through to open Scandinavian sandwiches, sharing platters and fresh oysters. What about accommodation? The 14 bedrooms are individually styled to match the seascape and take full advantage of the brilliant light that you only get when staying on the coast. Harwich enjoys glorious sunsets with molten coloured horizons and the setting sun on the Stour estuary is a special feature of staying at The Pier. All bedrooms are equipped with complimentary soft drink mini-bars, Aromatherapy Associates bathroom products, Sky In-Room and free Wi-Fi making The Pier an exceptional small hotel. 14

The Pier at Harwich is owned and run by Milsom Hotels & Restaurants, a family run company since 1952, also in the group are Le Talbooth, Maison Talbooth, The Treatment Rooms, Milsom Catering and Milsoms in Dedham and Milsoms Kesgrave Hall in Suffolk. Paul Milsom is Managing Director of the group alongside Stas Anastasiades, Operations Director who together with Geraldine Milsom have overseen and masterminded the re-build and re-define of The Pier. www.milsomhotels.com/thepier Historic Harwich, the Home of the Mayflower http://www.historicharwich.co.uk/

Georgina Mullins, Concierge Service at Audley Travel shares inspiration about Autumn half-term travel

INTERVIEW 21

Autumn can be one of the most rewarding times to travel, particularly for families wanting to optimise on school breaks or those looking for some last-minute sun before winter arrives. However, you may be lacking inspiration on where to go or struggling to narrow down your long list of travel ideas. Audley Travel’s Concierge service can provide information and advice on what time of year is best for travel, how far in advance you should start planning your trip and which destinations match your interests and budget. We caught up with Georgina, who is part of the Concierge team at Audley, to find out how to plan your travels around the autumn school holidays. What suggestions do you have for families planning an autumn half-term holiday? Some of the most popular autumn destinations for families include Turkey, Thailand and Malaysia, all of which offer great value, as well as South Africa which has a time difference of just one hour. If you’re keen to try somewhere different, Japan offers superb family attractions such as Disneyland Tokyo, Toei Kyoto Studio Park and Universal Studios and Harry Potter World in Osaka. You can watch snow monkeys bathing in Yudanaka’s hot springs, while fun classes in traditional pastimes such as origami and kembu swords will open young minds to Japan’s unique culture. On top of this, the country has an excellent public transport system that can swiftly take you from one end of the country to the other and a genuinely safe environment with friendly people. If you’re after somewhere more relaxing, Mauritius is a great choice and more affordable than you might think, making it an ideal family beach destination. Situated in the Indian Ocean, the azure waters are generally warm enough to swim in, while the 160km coastline offers many sheltered bays and coral reefs where families can safely enjoy snorkelling amongst colourful tropical fish as well as water sports such as kayaking and submarine diving. There are also plenty of family-friendly accommodation options offering children’s clubs, babysitting services and activities specifically catering for younger guests, from treasure hunts to arts and crafts. What are the key steps in planning a family holiday? Planning a family holiday isn’t always straightforward. When deciding on a destination we’d advise considering whether direct flights are offered, the duration of the flight, the time difference and whether malaria is an issue in that particular country, as well as how many different areas you want to visit during your trip. We can also help you find accommodation that’s known to be family-friendly. Looking forward to 2017, what are some of your key destinations for families looking to plan a longer holiday? We advise planning well in advance, especially if you want to go for a longer period of time. This ensures you get the best price on flights and accommodation, as well as increasing your chances of staying in our favourite hand-picked family hotels before they become fully-booked. If you have lots of time to plan your holiday then it’s worth considering some of our long-haul destinations. 22

Australia offers some incredible experiences for older children, including snorkelling over the Great Barrier Reef, trekking through rainforest and camping in the outback. The wildlife is easy to spot and often endemic to the region – nowhere else can you spot kangaroos, wallabies and koalas in the wild. The USA’s west coast is a fantastic self-drive destination, featuring iconic cities like San Francisco where you can cycle along the Golden Gate Bridge and watch sea lions bathing on the pier, striking scenery as you weave along the Pacific Coast Highway and sandy beaches where you can try surfing and kayaking in close proximity to seals, otters and dolphins. For families with older children and teenagers, Costa Rica provides opportunities for adventurous sports such as white water rafting, zip-lining through the rainforests or even hiking up volcanoes, all in an environment far removed from home. What is your own favourite holiday destination and why? Bursting at the seams with culture, Morocco feels a world away, despite its short three and a half hour flight from the UK. The country has a long and varied history that’s fascinating to learn about, and I love its rich culture, intricate architecture and characterful souqs selling anything from cactus silk scarves to aromatic herbs and Arabian-style lamps. The people in Morocco are very friendly, especially when it comes to children, and this, coupled with low prices, makes it a great choice for families looking for an entirely different holiday experience. What does Audley offer to travellers? We tailor-make individual journeys designed to match our clients’ interests, tastes and budgets, offering trips to over 75 countries worldwide. Our specialists all have genuine, first-hand knowledge of the areas they cover, having lived, worked or travelled extensively in their destinations. Having this expert knowledge therefore means that they can tell you anything from the best place to watch the sun rise over Asian temples, to which restaurant you should choose for the most authentic local meal. If you’re a keen photographer or fascinated by wildlife, our specialists will make sure that your trip incorporates activities or places that will optimise these interests so that you get the most out of your trip https://www.audleytravel.com

The Eden Project unveils a new garden: - The Perfume Garden The Eden Project in Cornwall is delighted to announce that this Summer (June 2016) it will be unveiling a new garden - one that will not only be a delight to the eyes but also the nose…The Perfume Garden. Inspired by Moorish gardens, this is Eden’s first ever show garden and is hidden within in the stunning surroundings of its world-famous Mediterranean Biome. The Perfume Garden’s aroma will be forever changing, with a variety of flowers blooming throughout the year to create a beautiful bouquet that saturates the space during each season. There will be a good range of base, mid and top notes with Narcissus budding in spring, Saffron in autumn and Parma Violet, Jasmine, Lavender, Rosemary and Eucalyptus that can be enjoyed all year round. Delicately curated in a geometrically shaped courtyard, the garden will boasts beautiful terracotta tiles, a comfortable seating area and an abundance of blossoming fragrant potted herbs and plants for visitors to touch and spell as they walk through the garden. The Perfume Garden will be open to the public June 2016 and is one of the new planting projects that Eden has undertaken to celebrate its 15th anniversary. Entry is included in the Eden admission ticket. If you are inspired to create your own garden, here is some helpful advice from Catherine Cutler, Mediterranean Biome Supervisor and gardening expert at Eden Project, Cornwall for creating a perfume garden at home:

FEATURE

General: 1) Think about the seasons and include something for every time of year. Some of the best scents come in winter, such as Daphne Jacqueline (Postill) 2) Include plants that are scented from their leaves (eg Sages (Salvia)) as well as their flowers (eg Sweet peas (Lathyrus)) 3) Choose a site that’s not too open or exposed so that the scent will linger 4) Many scented plants come from Mediterranean climates – where it is hot and sunny and the soil is poor and free draining. These plants dislike winter wet, so prepare the soil by incorporating plenty of extra grit or planting in large pots 5) If you enjoy being in your garden later in the day select some evening scented plants such as Night Scented Stocks (Matthiola) Plants: 1) My top favourite scented foliage plant is Lemon Verbena (Aloysia citriodora) , to me much zingier than the common garden Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis), but the challenge is that it needs winter protection 2) For the larger scent garden the Katsura tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) gives off incredible its candyfloss scent in autumn - as it’s leaves change colour to golden butter and toffee tones 3) Pinks (Dianthus) are remarkably sturdy as long as they have good drainage and produce a wonderful heady clove-like scent 4) For flower scent the favourites of the ancient Moorish gardens are still great choices for perfume gardens today: Rose (Rosa), Jasmine (Jasminum) and Lilies (Lilium) 5) If you have a frost free porch or conservatory then think about a Citrus tree, the floral scent is outstanding and the leaves and fruit are scented the remainder of the year http://www.edenproject.com
