Afternoon Tea in Style There is nothing quite as indulgent as a delicious afternoon tea! As the summer season has started with all the wonderful events that signal the start of summer, what could be more delightful than creating your own afternoon tea. It’s so easy to rush through life on automatic pilot, being so distracted with our own thoughts, or other’s actions that we find themselves crossing a road, or driving a familiar drive and suddenly wondering how we got there. Equally after a stressful day meals are consumed automatically, or eaten at desks while answering emails. Taking time to create a special meal, can be very soothing in both the planning and the ultimate consumption. As well as creating the meal, think about who to invite; a best friend, an elderly relative, someone who you know would really appreciate the opportunity. Book yourself time to prepare the food and think about the finer touches of your table decoration, beautiful china, cutlery, tablecloth, napkins, and flowers. Perhaps have tea dance music, or other quiet relaxing music playing in the background to create a special ambiance. One of our favourite sources of inspiration for what to prepare is the delightful Afternoon Tea at Home by Will Torrent, which includes deliciously indulgent recipes for sandwiches, savouries, scones, cakes and other fancies. 11

This delightful book includes the key techniques involved in patisserie, baking, chocolate work, and serving savory dishes in 80 beautifully illustrated recipes. Beautifully illustrated with easy to follow recipes including classics such as Smoked salmon and whipped cream cheese sandwiches, Cherry and almond bakewell tarts, Vanilla shortbread, and Fruited scones; Cucumber sandwiches with yuzu and chive butter, and Crab mayonnaise eclairs; as well as more adventurous offerings. An invaluable source of inspiration, there are also six guest recipes from top restaurants and hotels, including The Ritz, The Dorchester, The Gramercy Tavern, The Berkeley, Les Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, and Harrods. http://www.rylandpeters.com/afternoon-teaat-home Once prepared, sit back, relax and enjoy!

Planning a Creative Summer

22

This year summer has come early, and for all of us trapped behind computers, in offices, or just working hard at managing the daily life of home and work, we often look enviously at those basking in the unexpected sunshine, or having the freedom to have a more relaxed work/life balance. All is not lost, however, there is still plenty of time to plan activities, short weekend breaks and holidays where we can explore our creativity. First, spend time thinking about what creative activities you really enjoy taking part in. Is this something that you want to do on your own, with a friend, or partner, or as a family? If you are going on holiday, finding a location where there is opportunity to do something creative is a wonderful way of combining the two. Whether staying in a hotel, or self-catering it is always worth enquiring what opportunities there are available locally. Travel companies are becoming far more aware of the diverse interests of their guests, concierge services are now much more widely available, and the perfect solution to your creative needs is to have it arranged before you arrive. Even if you are not planning a holiday away, there are many ways that you can stimulate your creativity at home. For children in particular having a collection of crafting materials is a perfect way of encouraging them to leave the technology behind. Or you can combine the two by using online videos to help them with some of their creations. Wherever you take your holiday, part of the fun is planning your itinerary, and finding unusual activities is part of that joy. While adventure activities may appeal to many, there is a real growth in mindfulness and taking a slower route to relaxation. Depending on what you want to take part in, think carefully about which day you choose for your activity, some creative activities require you to return another day to collect the item you have created, so always enquire about the process and allow enough time for this. There are so many opportunities available both in the UK and further afield, for all the family, everything from cooking, wine tasting, short filmmaking, pottery, creative writing and much more. It is also possible to combine a leisure activity with something that could help you, or your family, develop in their career. For example, London Film Academy in Fulham have created a practical filmmaking course this Summer for teenagers who are interested in learning more about the working processes of film and TV. The two week course runs from 24 July – 4 August and is aimed at 13 – 17 year olds, offering would-be filmmakers an action-packed two weeks of fun workshops exploring the six key disciplines of the filmmaking process. Everyone leaves with the knowledge and skills to continue making film, whether on an iPhone, or other equipment they have to hand. Working in small groups with film and TV professionals, participants will explore the main disciplines of filmmaking: screenwriting, directing, camera operating, cinematography, sound and editing; to take a story from script to screen. Shooting a number of films in both studio and on-location environments using a high-end HD camera, the students will produce live action shorts, with a cinema screening for family and friends, and a finished DVD, complete with credits and an IMDB profile. http://londonfilmacademy.com/courses/young_filmmakers_academy_summer.asp
