Managing Director, Coquet Cottages What inspired you to set up Coquet Cottages? In 1998 I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to buy a holiday cottage in gorgeous village of Warkworth, Northumberland. Initially, my intentions were to operate the cottage as a sideline hobby whilst my 2 (now adult) children were still young, however my love for Northumberland and providing high quality holidays quickly grew. I now run a thriving business providing tailor-made holidays in 109 luxury holiday cottages all across Northumberland, alongside my husband Mark, my daughter Stephanie and a close-knit team of 4 passionate individuals. Living only an hour away from our first holiday cottage it became the perfect retreat for us to escape from day to day life, as well as providing holidays to couples looking for a quiet retreat. 12

Interview After a year or so, I decided to invest in another holiday cottage next door, and after 7 years this grew to a portfolio of 6. At the time, I was letting with another local agent, but as managing my 6 properties was fast becoming a fulltime job that I loved, that’s when I founded Coquet Cottages which has enabled me and my team to carry on our passion to other individuals looking to let our their holiday homes for others to enjoy. From 1998 I have seen Northumberland develop and thrive throughout everything it has faced, to create the gorgeous county it is today. Some of the cottages we list today are still owned by myself & my family, some are owned by close personal friends but we all share the same ethos and values, with extremely high standards.

13

How has your business grown and developed?

We are so lucky that our business has grown so much based on word of mouth due to our excellent standard of accommodation and the service we provide. We pride ourselves in and have a fantastic reputation for offering a first-class customer experience and looking after our loyal customers. From my very first holiday cottage, I went on to own 6 in total, sold 1 and now the 7th creation is currently a work in progress! We began and are currently based in the village of Warkworth but our portfolio extends to (currently) 109 gorgeous cottages peppered all across Northumberland. Despite the properties expanding, we have a main core focus; to ensure our guests have an excellent holiday.

What are your hopes and ambitions for the future? I am sure my team will agree with me that our hope is that the Coquet Cottages brand continues to grow. We would hope to be nationally recognized as the leading luxury holiday cottage brand in Northumberland, but have no intentions at the moment to spread into any other counties. We know our county and would rather stick to what we know best. We are currently looking at expanding our portfolio and meeting our current owners to receive their feedback on what they think we can be doing to improve our services.

Interview Do you have a particular Northumberland and why?

Cragside! This amazing house and estate never ceases to amaze me, despite visiting more times than I can count. I’m always in awe of how beautiful and well-preserved the house is, and how the legacy of Lord Armstrong is so apparent in all areas of the house and estate. The rest of the estate is just idyllic too, with the vast lake, walks and trails around the gardens – you’ll be mesmerized by the multitude of rhododendrons around the estate, bursting with colour. The National Trust have put so much care and attention into restoring this beautiful piece of history. Away from work, what do you do to relax? We luckily live just 10 minutes away on foot from magnificent Warkworth beach, and I love nothing more than taking our gorgeous Great Dane, Gracie for a long walk up there. At one end you can see Amble harbour and at the other end the ‘balamory’ style houses in Alnmouth. Its about a 4 mile walk all round so we’ve always worked up an appetite on a Sunday morning by the time we’re back! Our Sunday treat is heading to the dog-friendly boutique café, Bertrams, in Warkworth Village. They have a sun terrace open in the warmer months and 2 original woodburning stoves for the winter. I’m a vegetarian and their choice of breakfasts, lunches and sweets treats are just amazing. Our favourite amongst the team is the lemon and courgette cake. One word – heaven!

For visitors new to your area what would be your recommended places to visit? I personally highly recommend visiting the iconic & breathtaking Bamburgh Castle. Each time I visit I fall in love with it a little more, especially when the sun beams off the red stone. The village is full of history and charm, as well as being home to the coastal heroine, Grace Darling with a museum to commemorate her life. The village is gorgeous too, with a fantastic selection of pubs and restaurants given the size of the village! If you’re a foodie, I’d recommend a trip to Bamburgh. If the country is more your thing, a visit to Cragside is a must. Rothbury (just a mile down the road) is a gorgeous country village with a great sense of community spirit. www.coquetcottages.co.uk

THE PIER The Pier stands proudly overlooking the picturesque harbour and the confluence of the Stour and Orwell rivers. Long established in Harwich, the hotel boasts four stars with two rosettes for cooking. The Harbourside on the first floor of The Pier, is renowned for using locally caught seafood, much of which is landed in the harbour opposite. Our Head Chef takes much of his influence from the sea so Harwich lobster and crab are nearly always on the menu served whichever way you’d like. Celebrate the Great Outdoors In the last few weeks we have been experiencing the very best of weather, not so hot as it’s uncomfortable, but bringing welcome sunshine after the snow and cold weather of earlier months. Our countryside has an enviable reputation, with May and June recognized as some of the better months in the year to go on holiday and we have been blessed with an abundance of blossom, lambs gamboling in the fields and woods filled with bluebells as well as birds singing as they all celebrate the final arrival of Spring. This Bank Holiday wherever you live there is an opportunity to spend time outside, more and more urban areas are developing spaces where people can visit and enjoy being outside. There are so many beautiful coastal areas and countryside where people can enjoy the most inexpensive activity of all – walking. Outdoor swimming pools are another wonderful refreshing way to enjoy being outside, many have been kept open by the fundraising efforts of dedicated people who need our support. Early in the day, or late in the afternoon, what a wonderful way to both exercise and enjoy the fresh air. ISSUE˚60

22

At a time when we are all being encouraged to be more aware of the risks to our environment there are many opportunities to support our countryside and coastline and artisans looking to create a better way of life. Every county and region is celebrating with local festivals, fairs, markets and gardens and homes open to the public, from Art Trails to carnivals, like animals coming out from hibernation, this Bank Holiday is a wonderful time to throw off the layers from the colder and cloudier days and rediscover everything that is waiting for us outside in the great outdoors! https://www.visitengland.com https://www.visitbritain.com/ https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk http://www.english-heritage.org.uk

er What inspired you to set up Footpath Holidays? Footpath Holidays was set up by Suzanne’s parents in 1983. By 1992 a part-time hobby business had grown and needed to be computerised and to comply with a lot of new legislation. We were looking for a change of direction, Suzanne had walked and mountaineered throughout Britain, as well as the Alps and Pyrenees. I gained my mountain leadership certificate in 1987 and had walked and mountaineered extensively in Britain and worldwide, and as we had both had some involvement in the business already, it seemed the natural thing to do.

Interview You have been offering walking breaks for over 35 years, what have been the key changes over this period?

For people new to walking holidays, how would you describe the benefits, and what do you most enjoy about leading them?

The trend has moved away from guided group walking. People are overwhelmingly looking for ‘selfguided’ walking holidays but with all the arrangements taken care of.

Walking is the best way of really getting to know an area; its landscape, its nature and its people. The walks are great in their own right, but when you lead one you can bring it alive with local knowledge, folklore, history and anecdote.

What are some of the most popular walking tours that you offer? Devon and Cornwall are always popular. The Thames Path, the Cotswolds, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales are right up there too.

ISSUE˚60

You live in a beautiful part of the country, what do love most about where you live? The South West of England has a low population density and lots of wide open spaces. What appeals to me the most is the huge variety of scenery in

32

a relatively small area. The rugged coasts of Cornwall and Devon, the stark grandeur of Dartmoor, ancient woodlands and thatched villages on Exmoor, the Chalk Downland and ancient monuments of Wiltshire and the honey-coloured villages and meadows of the Cotswolds. All within a couple of hours travel of each other. Remarkable. When you are not working what do you do to relax? I enjoy live music, fly-fishing and, oddly enough, going for a walk! www.footpath-holidays.com
