HOT BRANDS COOL PLACES SPRING LIVING ISSUE ISSUEËš59

Can you tell us a little about the history of John Lewis of Hungerford? Our story began in 1972 when our founder John Lewis opened his first shop in Hungerford. His original workshop in Hungerford, Berkshire, where he created his, hand-crafted kitchens, still stands today as one of our showrooms. In 1992 John Lewis created our now signature, Artisan kitchen. Since then we have opened 13 showrooms countrywide and added 4 new styles of kitchen, along with bedrooms and furniture to our portfolio.

9

What are the key steps in designing a kitchen? The age or style of the property can often influence the style of the kitchen with classic or more traditional kitchens featuring in more period properties. However, with modern additions to even the oldest properties, or side returns which incorporate expanses of glass a sleek, modern kitchen can work very well here too.

Interview

Clients should consider whether this will be their “forever home” or just one for the next couple of years as this can influence how much they spend on the kitchen, as well as their style choices. They may opt for a more neutral and universally appealing layout if they are not going to be in the property long-term, and hold back on bolder style choices with regard to cabinetry colour and worktops. For people looking to be in their home for a longer time, this gives them more scope to personalise their kitchen with regard to both layout and colour and style choices, and can really create a kitchen just for them. Space-wise, things to consider are what function the room as a whole performs. Is it just a kitchen? Does room for dining need to be considered? Will there be a social space, e.g. sofa and TV area. Will there be a separate utility area or does this need to be incorporated into the kitchen. If so, then this space needs to be slightly separate from the kitchen area to reduce mess and taking up valuable kitchen space with laundry items. Each household is different and it is important to consider who works in a kitchen. A kitchen design will alter depending on how many people need to work in the space at once, and a kitchen for someone on their own versus a kitchen where two or more people are contributing to the cooking, will need to take this into account. When considering the new space, it is good to reflect on their current or past kitchens for both positive and negative factors. Often what didn’t work in a previous kitchen (lack of storage/prep space etc.) can have a strong bearing on what to include or not include in the new space.

What about colour choices - which colours are on trend for 2018? Deep blues are still very strong, particularly with brass accents and marble worktops, but we are also seeing a move to softer blues with a hint of lavender and purple behind them. We also think dark greens, again with brass or gold accents, will be strong this year; it’s a trend which started in 2017 but we feel will build throughout the coming year. To go with these deeper shades, we will see the addition of soft pastels, blush pink, lavender and pale blues and greens, for example, which will add a softness to darker colour schemes. This year will also be strong for bold colour additions, whether to make a island feature, to add colour to the interior of a glazed cabinet of piece of furniture, or to create a dramatic two-tone kitchen. We have brought out a range of yellows, varying from bright to more muddy mustards which will work beautifully with the deep greens, blues and smoky greys, to create a dramatic design.

Do you have a personal favourite among the kitchen ranges that you offer? This is such a difficult question, as it changes so often! Between the styles that we offer, I do love simplicity of the Pure handle-less kitchen as it can create a very elegant and serene feel within the kitchen. As Pure lends itself to featuring drawers instead of cupboards at base level, it then creates a linear quality which appeals to my preference for balance and symmetry. That said, both our Shaker products, Original and Framed, have an element of crafted detail which adds personality to a kitchen design, and instantly creates a comfortably and homely feel without being too traditional. It’s too hard to choose, to be honest, and when we see some of the beautiful designs our designers are creating in all our ranges it makes it even harder! What are your interests outside of work, what do you do to relax? Outside of the showroom I head for a local pottery studio where I've been creating hand-built and thrown pieces for the past five years. I work with a fantastic group of creative people, both in the day job, and in the studio, and this inspires me to keep designing and making. Any left-over spare time is taken up by a bit of extreme knitting, scouring vintage and antique fairs for restoration projects and continuing the labour of love that is the renovation of my home. www.john-lewis.co.uk

DESIGNERS GUILD This season our collection celebrates the harmonious impact and collaborative synergy shared between the artist and their muse. Our Spring collections explore this influence in its many guises. Wallpapers include smaller scale, textured geometrics and incredible statement panels, plus the next generation of ombre designs. Textiles are evocative of our secret garden in bloom; highly detailed botanical foilage, brilliant butterflies and sublime florals on shaded, textural grounds all feature. Each design nods to artistic tendency; with delicate handpainted elements, shaded pencil marks and Impressionist style geometrics. Adding to our definitive library of over 5,000 plain textures too, we introduce, new additions to our linen portfolio, as well as beautiful voiles and a collection of washed cotton chenille textures. For Spring 2018, we present a new season full of beauty and incredible possibilities, in a broad colour palette for everyone and every eventuality.

Where do you start when you are designing a new collection? The brand will define the scope of the collection then we apply those trends or ideas that we currently have, to what will work within that brand identity. I start by pinning a variety of things on the wall cuttings from magazines, photos I’ve taken, postcards I’ve bought, samples from manufacturers, new paint colour charts and so on. They get moved around on the board and eventually a pattern forms - clusters or groups that can then get crystallised into a single design idea. I use Pinterest and Instagram as virtual pinboards too and will print out some things from there, which catch my eye, to add to the wall in my office. I see the wall as a physical manifestation, as much as possible, of what is floating around in my head. Then I start to draw or paint… How has the process changed over the years?

Interview

Tremendously - now there are computer programmes that can design something in a matter of hours that I would have taken weeks to paint by hand years ago. But I manipulate the programmes to my advantage. I don’t use them to do it all. First I paint or draw, or create a texture or mark. Then I scan this into the computer and use the programme to resolve it. Without the element of the human hand in the design, it looks too sterile.

We love the Highbrook Collection – what do you see as the key trends for wallpaper in 2018? An eclectic mix of metallics, retro glamour and surface texture style are all key wallpaper trends this year. You can see how these have influenced our carefully curated 2018 Highbrook collection https://www.thepaperpartnership. co . u k / b ra n d s /e l i z a b e t h - o c k fo rd / highbrook/ Today’s wallpaper trends dictate that you can use every possible pattern, colour and style to reflect your personality whether you choose a feature wall or even all four walls. One such example of a key trend from our new collection is Bosham. https://www.thepaperpartnership. co.uk/product/bosham-aqua/ As diamonds of all sizes are big news in interior design, this pattern has been influenced by the 50s film star legend, Marilyn Monroe. After all, diamonds are a girl’s best friend. This retro-inspired, two-tone diamond pattern reflects 50s

ISSUE˚59

and 60s vintage glamour with a twist. Out of all the wall coverings that you have designed, do you have a favourite design? My favourite older design is Ditchling from Chelwood. It is textural squares of metallic in diffent tones. I had it up in Ivory, in my office for a long time and never tired of looking at it. Currently, my favourite wallpaper design from the Highbrook collection is Coleton https://www.thepaperpartnership. co.uk/product/coleton-black/ because I love the scale of it. It’s large and open, but still has this beautiful flowing geometry. I also like the little raised ribbon in the middle. It’s very usable. It has a good neutral background with a great texture, but also little fine lines of colour that you can pick out and use to accessorise a room. But, I am also in love with Hove which will appear later in the year in our Brighton collection. This design has circles that show fragments of other

20

designs with a Chinoiserie influence, and it charms me. When you are not designing what do you do to relax? Well, I love watching television – Mad Men, Collateral, Shetland and Vera spring to mind and I love a good detective drama. Other shows, which I enjoy due to their visual stimulation, are Taboo, Peaky Blinders and The Miniaturist. I enjoy going to the cinema and art galleries. I recently visited the Royal Academy of Arts to see Charles I: King and Collector which I can thoroughly recommend. The theatre is another great passion of mine – I've recently seen Jane Eyre and The Girl From The North Country. I also love a spot of gardening and I belong to a book club – the last book we read was the Essex Serpent. I also love experimenting with my cooking, playing with our son Joshua and a good walk with our dog, Rocket. www.thepaperpartnership.co.uk
