Long established in Harwich, the hotel boasts four stars with two rosettes for cooking. The Harbourside on the first floor of The Pier, is renowned for using locally caught seafood, much of which is landed in the harbour opposite. DA N I E L T H O M P S O N GENERAL MANAGER M U L L I O N C OV E H O T E L What is the history of Mullion Cove Hotel? The Mullion Cove Hotel (built in 1898) is one of three hotels that were built along this stretch of the Cornish coastline by the Great Western Railway, which had planned to extend the branch line from Helston down to Cury where it was hoped wealthy Victorians would head during the summer months. The hotels were in situ when the First World War broke out, but during that time all plans for holidays were abandoned due to there being a more necessary use for the railway lines. The hotel has changed hands a few times since then, however. In December 2006 the family run Thurlestone Estates Ltd became the proud new owners of The Mullion Cove Hotel. The hotel comprises of 30 bedrooms (2 suites, 8 Premier rooms, 7 sea view rooms, 6 Partial sea view rooms and 7 standard inland rooms).
This is the feeling we wanted to create in the spa and as long as we ensured we provided our unique style of hospitality then any new developments fit right into our overall offering. We look hard at how we can exceed our guests' expectations so that they wish to return and it's with these values and tradition installed by our founder, Margaret Amelia Grose, which continuously drives us to succeed.
In December 2014 Mullion Cove Hotel acquired the Old Cellar House located in the Harbour and converted it into 5* Luxury Holiday Apartments and in October 2018 acquired Trenowyth House which were also converted into four luxury apartments which opened in Easter 2019. The hotel is going from strength to strength and Summer 2019 will see the addition of an amazing Sea Facing Spa.
During the summer months we have the wonderful opportunity of getting first refusal of the freshest fish and seafood from Pascoe’s - a family run fishing boat which has been operating in Mullion Cove for generations.
How have you managed to combine some of the traditional values with new developments at the hotel? We have always put our guests' experience at the forefront of everything we do and this is where we start with all new developments. We have always offered a traditional style of service with a modern, relaxed and unstuffy atmosphere. 16
How do you celebrate local produce in your restaurant?
We receive some of the freshest lobster, mackerel, crab and monk fish that any chef would die for. Our head chef then prepares these for the Atlantic View Restaurant within our incredibly popular Sea Food Platters and our 'Crack a Crab' nights (every Friday from the 5th July) sees amazing whole crab served simply in the Glenbervie Bistro. With the freshest seafood that anyone can offer in a stunning location with a sea view – we let this amazing local produce do the talking!

For visitors new to your area what would be your recommendations for places to visit? The Lizard Peninsular is a stunning place and there are some truly magnificent nature walks. A day with a pair of binoculars at the Lizard Point is a must, especially during the Summer months where seals, dolphins and basking sharks are regular visitors. There are also a number of National Trust properties and gardens to visit with Trelissick Gardens being a particular favourite, however, being located on the South West Coast Path, it's not far before you’re on some of the best beaches in Cornwall. Away from work how do you relax? Time with my wife and three little boys is always a treat and a distraction from work. I also have a few hobbies that keep me busy. I play 1st team rugby at Helston RFC, I enjoy fishing the wonderful Cornish coastline, gardening and beekeeping. https://www.mullion-cove.co.uk
THURLESTONE HOTEL The Thurlestone Hotel has been owned and run by the Grose family since 1896. The hotel is superbly family friendly: there are two children’s playrooms which feature an array of activities suitable for both teens and toddlers, The hotel offers a range of dining experiences. For those with a taste for the finer things in life, look no further than the Trevilder 2 AA Rosette Restaurant where the menu boasts locally-sourced food and offers a range of favourite regular dishes complemented by a daily changing selection of seasonal “market dishes”

SUSIE MASON - FOUNDER O F G O N E C R A B B I N G L T D. What inspired you to set up Gone Crabbing? My children were at school full time and I wanted to work but be free to be with them, particularly during the school holidays. I had set up and run a holiday let business in Norfolk and knew how buoyant the tourist industry was on the East coast. I started to look at what people spent their money on back in 2008 there was little British seaside product. It was predominantly imports which whilst beachy, did not particularly reflect the traditional British seaside. I wanted to create a product range which was not only British but was fun, colourful and a little bit quirky Gone Crabbing was born. You celebrated your 10th Anniversary last year, what have been the highlights for you over that time? We are now 11 years old which, when you consider we have been through one of the most severe economic crises, I am quite proud that we are still here. The highlights …. well my first sale would defiinitely be one - you spend so long working on your range and then you have to nervously go out and see if anyone likes it. Thankfully I have had few people who don’t! Another highlight would be attending the Burnham Market Craft Fair and having a queue of people - always good for your confidence! Opening our lovely shop at Dalegate Market - such a fabulous site. Another one would be landing THE most fabulous trade order they travelled up to Norfolk to see us and we landed the biggest order ever - a cork was popped that evening.

What are your plans for the future? We would like to extend our adult range which is always very popular. We have always concentrated on children’s clothing and the giftware but I feel there is more to go on the adult clothing. We really enjoy going out and meeting our customers so you will see us at far more show and food festivals. Do you have a favourite product in your range? I love our mugs - they make such a great cup of tea. I also particularly like our handcreams - not only is the packaging fun but the handcream is so moisturising and smells delicious. What advice do you have for other small businesses about how to grow a brand?
Trademark, trademark, trademark, protect your Intellectual Property and police it. Apart from that you have to have a strong work ethic and be good at multi-tasking. Oh yes, also join the FSB Federation of Small Businesses - essential back-up when you need it. The business started in Norfolk and you now live in Cornwall, what do you love about living by the coast? The smells, the fresh air, the noise - the waves, the wind, the seagulls. To me being by the coast is freedom. It gives me an inner peace. http://www.gonecrabbing.co.uk
How long do we have? Be prepared to work very very hard and make sure you protect your designs.

Food for your wellbeing
10-a-day the Easy Way - James Wong
Gene Eating - Dr Giles Yeo
Synopsis: Eating healthily can be a confusing business. But what if there were a single, simple change you could make that would transform your health, without forcing you to give up the foods you love?
The science of obesity and the truth about diets
According to a growing body of international studies, little tweaks to your everyday diet to get you beyond the 5-a-day minimum and towards 10-a-day could slash your risk of developing the biggest diseases to affect the Western world. In fact, experts agree that simply eating more fruit and veg is the single most important dietary change you can do for your health! As only 3 out of 10 people are even achieving the minimum amount of fruit and veg, this book aims to make getting there easy. No gimmicks, no ‘banned’ foods, no miserly portion sizes. Just 80 of the classic recipes you know and love made healthier (and tastier) by simply upping the amount of fruit and veg in them, all backed by the best science available. https://www.octopusbooks.co.uk Hot Brands Cool Places Review What we particularly liked about this book is the really helpful section at the start discussing Why 10-A-Day? This is followed by delicious recipes for Breakfasts & Brunches, Lunches, Dinners, Desserts, Snacks, Sides & Sauces. Throughout the book there are additional tips and variations to the recipes as well as serving suggestions. A very practical and easy to use collection of recipes.
Synopsis: Why are we all getting fatter? Why are some people hungrier than others? And why don’t diets work? In an age of misinformation and pseudo-science, the world is getting fatter and the diet makers are getting richer. So how do we break this cycle that’s killing us all? Drawing on the very latest science and his own genetic research at Cambridge University, Dr Giles Yeo has written the seminal ‘anti-diet’ diet book. Exploring the history of our food, debunking marketing nonsense and toxic diet advice, and confronting the advocates of ‘clean eating’, Dr Giles translates his pioneering research into an engaging, must-read study of the human appetite. Inspiring and revelatory, Gene Eating is an urgent and essential book that will empower us all with the facts we need to establish healthy relationships with food – and change the way we eat https://www.waterstones.com/ Hot Brands Cool Places Review In Gene Eating, every chapter is interesting and reads like a conversation with Giles, written in a very accessible style, this book combines science with a practical and down to earth explanation. This is an absolutely fascinating book and essential reading for anyone who wants to understand more about the science behind what we eat.
