Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Tina Mahony & Simon Ingham, Founders of Go Modern for an exclusive interview

INTERVIEW 6

You are celebrating your 10th Anniversary this year, what was your vision for Go Modern when you first opened? We’d always had a love of high-end contemporary furniture, and back in 2006, we were frustrated that no one in the UK was selling many of the wonderful brands that we knew were available in other parts of Europe. Go Modern began as a way of sourcing the designs we loved (and that we hoped Go Modern customers would love too!). We began by selling online only and 10 years later we know our customers love our designs - we now have a showroom on London’s eclectic Kings Road. What have been your highlights over the last 10 years? So many! Opening our showroom has to be a major highlight of course. Plus trips out to major international tradeshows and the excitement of spotting potential partners that we know will share our philosophy and catching up with our long, established suppliers. We make careful judgements on design, practicality and of course value – we believe that modern furniture should be as good to use as it is to look at! All of the furniture we choose is hand-picked and we take great pleasure in that. We’re now one of the UK’s leading specialists in contemporary furniture and we sell to customers around the world. It’s important to us that our suppliers share our passion for design and high quality, and every year it is a delight to see some of the innovative new ranges that they produce. We also took part in the London Design Festival this year and created a ‘magical outdoor garden inside’ for the whole of the Festival to showcase one of our Belgian supplier’s fabulous outdoor designs.

What changes have you seen in interior fashion trends during this time? We don’t tend to follow fashion slavishly but the trend for minimalist design has sat comfortably with the aesthetic we like. Marble has become increasingly popular and is used by a number of the brands we work with. And metallics, such as copper, never seem to lose their popularity. Both are fabulous materials and even small amounts within a design add a touch of contemporary glamour and absorb or complement different textures and colours around them. Glass too is increasingly popular, and we have worked with one of the world’s leading manufacturers, Tonelli Design, almost from the start of our business. The shapes they can produce are truly astounding and very beautiful. We’ve also seen a rise in the trend for multi-functional furniture - for example wall-units that can accommodate not just a sound system and TV but space for a large dining table and chairs! There’s also a growing trend for furniture incorporating technology too – sideboards with Bluetooth and lamps and coffee tables with USB docks etc. Do you have particular favourites in your range? We specialize in made-to-measure wardrobes working with leading Italian suppliers and we love nothing more than being presented with an awkward space or a room that a customer thinks just won’t accommodate any kind of storage. It’s our favourite kind of problem! We also love wall units. There are some fabulous designs around now that are totally modular so, again, whatever space is available, we can offer some incredibly innovative ideas, customized to suit. How do you see the business developing? We intend that when we reach our 20th anniversary we’ll still be one of the leading retailers of contemporary design furniture, and enjoying what we do just as much! When you leave the showroom and go home, what makes a home for you? We are a team of 11 people now and obviously our homes are all different (although we all share a love of contemporary design). It’s a cliché we know, but family and friends make a home… and, of course, good quality furniture. http://www.gomodern.co.uk

Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Charlie Whinney, Founder of Charlie Whinney Studio for an exclusive interview

INTERVIEW 14

It’s your 10th anniversary this year, what inspired you to start designing in wood? I was studying architecture at university and really wanted to learn about different materials – I had this theory that if I knew how to personally work with different materials it would make me a better designer. I worked steel with my brother, enrolled on a cabinet making course at Rycotewood and learnt a bit about plastic at Inflate. At Rycotewood I did a lot of steam-bending trying to do some of processes of bending and forging steel but in wood and made a lot of strange work, some successful but a lot of just twisted shapes with no real use. I then went to Falmouth to do 3D Design for Sustainability and did mainly ceramics and composites for 2 years, but for my major project I needed a material that was locally available with very low embodied energy and carbon – so came back to wood and have not looked back as it really is the most fantastic material for a lot of reasons. You have had an amazing career, what have been your highlights? There is a time in the workshop after all the initial design work is done and the making is underway, when you find out what a piece of work actually is and if it works. Sometimes it is a bit of surprise, and you leave the workshop feeling really happy, like a scientist who has made a new discovery. We got this with the rolling summer houses, and the first kinetic works, first mirror works and last year with the multi-view works (need to think of better name for them). I suppose the first time we do something it is always a highlight that stays with you. Travelling has also been really nice, I loved working in Tokyo and also spending time making steam-chambers and working in Singapore with a great Chinese team, the Mexicans in Dallas and bizarrely the English in Washington DC! Making a staircase for my friends in France was a real highlight, combined everything including new work and ideas, travel and friends into one lovely week. Most recently I have been working with some kids on the NACRO scheme (kids excluded from school and/ or in trouble with the police) and that has been a real highlight this year. They were admittedly sometimes a bit hard work as a group but I liked the challenge of making some sense of the sessions we did and I liked how they responded to making large scale work and some of the processes we used. Individually all of the kids were able to excel in learning some aspects design and basic woodwork skills and I hope they enjoyed cleaving huge bits of Oak apart and steam-bending. What do you enjoy most about creating your designs? The spontaneous and experimental aspects of making. Today I was working on some new products (pencils) and really enjoyed the transformation from bit of wood to familiar object and how the exact nature, feel, weight and character of each version was hard to predict until almost complete. Of all the things that you have designed do you have a favourite? No, not really, it is probably always the last project. I am still quite fond of the River Marble Run we have just finished with the NACRO kids. What are your plans for the future? Not at all sure – I have too many plans so I will see what happens! Between now and January I am continuing on with a project called ‘Stupid Apes’ which is an art project with a purpose of looking at humans and how we use the world around us. I am not sure where it is going but expect some new work to come from it. Also I am writing a book about steam-bending and hope to get that finally published next year as well as further developing the steam-bending courses. Ten years ago I had a written business plan with an annual strategy, but I have found that it quite important and a lot more interesting to stay flexible and take opportunities when they present themselves. 15

What makes a home for you? People, the place is really not that important. I feel at home in a restaurant with my brother. I had a fire in the workshop about five years ago and lost all my tools, and although it was annoying and very expensive, it was kind of wonderful to discover first-hand how it is people not the material or equipment that is important, and this gave me a lot of confidence. We live in Cumbria now, which is an amazingly beautiful county if you have not visited, a great place to call home and bring up our fine Cumbrian son. http://www.charliewhinney.com

Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Val Marshall, Founder of The Natural Rug Company for an exclusive interview It’s your 10th Anniversary this year, what inspired you to create The Natural Rug Company? After giving up a full time job in I.T to work alongside my partner dealing with the admin of the Natural Flooring Company I saw what beautiful rugs could be made from the natural materials and that they could all be made to order to any size you needed. Thinking what a great opportunity this was and with the desire from years ago to have my own business the Natural Rug Company began. What have been your highlights during this time? I think all the wonderful people I have met and wonderful places I have seen when visiting customers in their homes with all our samples. Also we were privileged to supply a beautiful runner for one of the X Factor houses a few years ago and actually visited ‘the’ house. Another highlight was a massive rug made for an art gallery and I always will remember the tiniest rug too, which, because of the products chosen to make it turned out to be the most expensive doormat ever but we had a very happy customer! What changes have you seen in your customer’s choices during the last ten years? Now customers seem to be a little more adventurous, have moved away from ‘beige’ and like to add more colour, particularly in Hallways, people now like to make this a feature of the house and go for some bold stripes to make an impact. Having said that there are always the favourite products that customers turn to and request without fail and that I know we will be able to carry on selling forevermore.

26

Do you have personal favourites in your range? I do, I love Sisal Oriental, it is a range that has stayed with us right from the start and I am sure will continue to be around for many years to come. It is one of the softer of the Sisals and as such looks and feels good in any room of the house. I also love the Wool Monsoon range, which is a sink your feet into carpet and is great to add a touch of luxury to a room. How do you see your business developing? Mainly I want to see The Natural Rug Company continuing to grow without losing the personal service that we offer to our customers. I would like to extend my base of Interior Designers and also expand more into supplying hotels and restaurants with some of our beautiful rugs. What makes a home for you? For me home has to be somewhere that is comfortable, relaxing and welcoming to all, where you can be yourself and shut out all the trials and tribulations of the day. Most importantly of course is the family in it. :-) www.naturalrugcompany.co.uk
