Focus on Beacon Park Boats Looking for an alternative holiday this Autumn? We talk to Sarah and Alasdair Kirkpatrick of Beacon Park Boats. Can you tell us about the features in the Houseboats that you have available this Autumn? From November to March, two of our luxury narrowboats are permanently moored in private spots at our wharf in Llangattock, and we let them as houseboats. It’s an enviable setting, just a short walk from the delightful market town of Crickhowell. The two narrowboats are moored on either side of our wharf – one to the north and one to the south – so you have your own space. Our car park is just a few metres away, though you may find you don’t go near your car on this get-away-from-it-all break. Each of the houseboats sleeps two people in a 5’ double bed with crisp white bed linen, duvet and traditional Welsh blanket. In the shower room, there’s porcelain sanitaryware, a shower, a toilet that flushes at the push of a button, a constant supply of hot water, fluffy white bath and hand towels for each person and Gilchrist & Soames toiletries. The high-spec kitchen includes a full-size fridge and cooker, microwave, Dualit toaster and everything you need to prepare superb meals – from roasting tins and a corkscrew/bottle opener, to a cafetière and egg cups for breakfast. In the lounge there’s a comfy sofa and a TV/DVD/CD/DAB/MP3 player, with free Wi-Fi.

Whatever the weather, the central heating and excellent insulation keeps you snug. In Houseboat North there’s a log-effect gas stove and in Houseboat South here’s a wood-burning stove, for that extra toasty feeling. The deck of the houseboats is the perfect place to sit and enjoy your morning coffee as the ducks swim past, or a glass of wine as the stars appear at night. What are the advantages of visiting out of the main holiday season? The Monmouthshire & Brecon canal is quite unlike any other waterway in Britain. It’s not joined to the main canal network, so it’s quieter with fewer boats, even in the height of the summer season. From November to early March it’s even more relaxing. The waterway is closed to navigation so that the Canal & River Trust can undertake planned maintenance to keep this 200-year old structure in great condition for visitors and locals. During this period, walks along the canal towpath offer amazing views of the Usk valley, as the trees drop their leaves. Unusually for a canal, the Mon & Brec (as locals call it) rises high above the valley floor, with the stunning landscape going up on one side of the canal and falling gently away on the other. You’ll still get a friendly welcome from local people in the pubs, cafés and shops in our local towns. Crickhowell: Pretty town packed with independent shops and good places to eat. Castle ruins, riverside walk and 17th century bridge over the river Usk. And it’s just a stroll from our wharf www.visitcrickhowell.co.uk Abergavenny: A bustling town complete with markets (most days of the week), castle & museum, cinema, theatre, Priory Church, riverside walk and many good places to eat. About 20 minutes drive. www.visitabergavenny.co.uk Brecon: Historic town with markets every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. Cathedral, South Wales Borderers Museum, cinema, theatre and a range of cafés and restaurants. About 20 minutes drive. www.breconbeaconstourism.co.uk What are some of the other attractions available to visit nearby? Here are some of our favourite places to visit: Heritage Blaenavon World Heritage Site Blaenavon World Heritage Site & Big Pit Caerleon Amphitheatre Raglan Castle Llanthony Priory Tintern Abbey Tretower Court & Castle For more information visit: http://cadw.gov.wales/daysout/?lang=en Artisan food and drink producers Ancre Hill Estates Vineyard, near Monmouth Apple County Cider, near Skenfrith Black Mountains Smokery, Crickhowell Kingstone Brewery, Tintern Sugarloaf Vineyard, Abergavenny Trealy Farm Charcuterie, Monmouth White Castle Vineyard, near Abergavenny 11

Golf Celtic Manor Resort, near Newport Cradoc Golf Club, near Brecon The Monmouthshire Golf Club, near Abergavenny The Old Rectory Golf Club, Llangattock (within walking distance) The Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club, near Monmouth We are situated in great walking country so you may like to head up one of the many peaks. We provide Ordnance Survey Explorer Maps OL12 and OL13, local walking guides and information about pubs and restaurants on each houseboat. Tell us more about stargazing in the Brecon Beacons? Some of the darkest skies in the UK are to be found in the Brecon Beacons, and the deck of your houseboat becomes a private stargazing spot on a clear night. You don’t need any special equipment to get a glimpse of the major constellations, bright nebulas and meteor showers Just lie down or lean back and look upwards. The Brecon Beacons National Park has the prestigious honour of being an International Dark Sky Reserve – only the fifth destination in the world, and the first in Wales. To discover even more, there are occasional stargazing events held in a number of locations across the National Park. Our very own Sarah, here at Beacon Park Boats, has been on a workshop to learn more about this growing area of tourism. As a Brecon Beacons National Park Ambassador, Sarah keeps her tourism knowledge up-todate so she can confidently answer queries from customers and, in turn, make their visits extra special. Sarah has bought planispheres and some books on stargazing for our houseboats, to help guests spot certain stars and constellations in the dark skies around us. What do you love about living and working so close to the water? The scenery never ceases to amaze us even though we have lived in the area for almost twenty years. We love watching the views change with the seasons. If we didn’t live and work here we’d miss the ducks who come and visit our office, the chance to have a friendly word with passers-by on the towpath and the calming effect of spending time by the canal. What are the essentials to pack for a holiday in a Houseboat? We try to provide everything on board our houseboats that we would want to use when we go on holidays so you can pack light. However, to get the most out of this relaxing break, we recommend: a. Comfortable walking shoes/boots, because the towpath will beckon and you’ll be out and about enjoying the fresh air before you know it b. Waterproof jacket, as it does rain in Wales (how else would the Brecon Beacons be so green!) but that won’t stop you enjoying the local area because there are excellent indoor options (craft centres, museums, art galleries, independent shops and cinemas) for that rainy day. c. Your dog – if you have one. We won’t charge you any extra. Dogs love houseboat holidays because a good walk is never far away. However, if you’re not keen on pets you’ll be pleased to read that our cleaning regime is so thorough you’d never know they had been aboard. d. Your favourite hobby/pastime – bring your watercolours, your camera, or that good book you’ve been meaning to read. We guarantee you’ll slow down on our houseboat holidays and relax.

Autumn is the season to enjoy!

As we leave the main summer holidays behind, September and October provide us with a wonderful opportunity to still enjoy sunny days and the chance to take advantage of less crowded beaches, or walks in the countryside before the days get shorter. There is something very special about a walk in unexpected sunshine, or capturing a beautiful sunset in the autumn or winter months. Autumn is often the time when there are fairs, or markets full of speciality foods by local artisans. If you want to learn a new hobby, check out your local area for classes, or artists who may offer 1-1 sessions. If you have children there will often be special events organised for the autumn half-term. Many places offer special deals for mid-week breaks and with more and more people working for themselves this can present an opportunity to explore some new and exciting places. Even if you have used up most of your holiday allocation we discovered a brilliant little book recently: Gone For Lunch – Laura Archer- 52 things to do in your lunch break This presents a totally inspiring collection of activities that you can undertake in your lunchtime. After failing to take a lunch break for several weeks, Laura Archer set herself a lunchtime challenge for every week of the year and began chronicling her escapades. Drawing buildings, trying yoga classes, volunteering, going for bike rides, handwriting letters: her challenges ranged from indoor to outdoor, active to sedentary, and the effect they had on her was magical. By claiming back that single hour in the middle of the day, Laura turned her life into something richer and happier. It’s so easy to work through the day without taking a break, but whether you work for a company, or for yourself, just allocating some time for yourself during the day will really help you to be more energized. If you enjoy baking, Autumn is a wonderful time to fill your home with delicious food, using fruit and vegetables harvested at this time of year. Even the smallest garden will need tidying and making ready for the winter, planting bulbs ready for the spring, cutting back foliage, making sure any tools you use are cleaned and put away carefully. Younger children love the magic of planting in the autumn and seeing the bulbs begin to show. And although no one wants to think of the worst happening, it’s also important to be prepared in case of emergency both in the car and at home. Above all, it’s about seizing the opportunity to go outside, and enjoying everything that’s on offer. Gone For Lunch – Laura Archer 52 things to do in your lunch break Buy now from Amazon.co.uk
