INTERVIEW
4
Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Fiona Cairns, Founder of Fiona Cairns Ltd. for an exlusive interview Fiona Cairns Ltd have been making luxury cakes for the last 25 years, and last year the company was commissioned to make the wedding cake for HRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The company has recently launched a bespoke cake department. What first attracted you to creating a business around making cakes? I started making cakes after I made a small batch of miniature Christmas cakes for friends one Christmas. My husband suggested I market them, and so Fiona Cairns was born! I trained first as a graphic designer, so the cakes have always been very visual - whilst we still maintain that flavour has to be the most important thing. When I first made the cakes, in the early eighties, there was nothing else like them around, so we had a really strong position in the market. We always try and champion people who are using traditional techniques, how have you maintained traditions in your bakery? Our bakery is unique in that we have grown so much over the last 25 years, but have still maintained the handmade process in our cake making. People don’t realise, but we make nearly every decoration in the bakery- right down to the dolly mixtures on top of the fairy cakes and biscuits! We also give our fruit cakes time to mature properly- doused in brandy, the flavours are allowed to develop before they go out to our customers. We really do put love into the cakes, our customers tell us they can taste the difference. It’s just over a year since you created the wedding cake to celebrate the wedding of HRH the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. What has changed for you during that year? Making the Royal Wedding Cake was the most fantastic honour for the company. It was such a team effort to organize and make everything. Our profile has increased over the last year, and orders are up. We have had such a demand for special one-off cakes that we have now launched a bespoke cake service, so special orders now get the attention they deserve. We have also set up an online shop, which has just launched. We were inundated with emails from around the world, asking if our cakes were available to buy online- especially from Brazil and Italy. The online shop will give us the opportunity to send our cakes all over the world- a very exciting prospect! As your business has evolved where do you spend most of your time? Over the past couple of years, I have been very busy writing recipe books; Bake and Decorate was published in 2010, and The Birthday Cake Book in 2011. There is a new book due to be published in September 2013, which focusses on seasonal baking. So a lot of my time is spent writing, researching and developing new recipes- it’s a lovely creative process. 5
As the face of the brand I have also been involved in TV and media opportunities, and this summer we are involved in the Marie Curie Blooming Great Tea Party campaign. I am very much involved with everything going on at the bakery, we now have an expert team of bakery managers and a product design and development team which allows us to keep up with the demand from our customers. My husband Kishore is the Managing Director of the business and works from the bakery every day. What are your hopes for the future development of your company? We have been working from our bakery in Leicestershire for the last 12 years, and before that, from a stable block in the back garden. We would love to open a shop in London- we’re on the look out for the right place! We also hope that the online venture will grow into a whole new branch of the business, as the trend for online food and gift shopping grows. We often ask a question about time-travel, if you could travel anywhere in the world, or back in time, how would you spend your next twenty-four hours? If I could go anywhere in the world right now, I would go to our house in Gujarat, India, and simply lie in the hammock! No phone, mobile or emails- I’d just listen to the sounds around me and relax for 24 hours! And I’d definitely have a glass or two of cold Nimbu Pani- a refreshing lime drink. My husband is from India, and we go there every year. It’s the most relaxing place to be. For more information about Fiona Cairns bespoke cakes, please call +44 (0) 116 240 2888, enquiries@fioncairns.com. There is a minimum notice period of 2 months for a bespoke cake. The Fiona Cairns online shop has just opened, and will stock a range of cakes, teatime treats, books and gifts, straight from the bakery. www.fionacairns.com www.facebook.com/fionacairnscakes www.twitter.com/fionacairns

Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Jonathan Boston, Founder of denisonboston for an exlusive interview. How have you used your previous experience in developing denisonboston? I originally trained as an architect, moving then into interiors, lighting and then contemporary product design. So a strong design ethos has always been present. I work to create forms and patterns that are modern and timeless dimensionless in their design. Taking inspirations from any scale and source including architecture, science fiction, furniture, interiors, engineering, innovation and retro. This can be seen in denisonboston’s accessories signature forms and patterns. What can the fashion industry do to bring more creativity into men’s fashion? I think the best way to bring more creativity is to embrace the differences between men’s and women’s fashion and give each a separate platform to shine. Women’s fashion seem to be so fast moving and ever changing that mens market is sometimes overshadowed. In my opinion, men look for strong tradition, pedigree and continuity, the industry needs to take these values and push men’s fashion forward with innovative design and materials. What excites you about how your brand is developing? Since launching denisonboston in 2003, with a lot of hard work and creativity the collection and brand is really starting to come to fruition. Alongside our export market and good independent stockists we are starting to have an exciting time with key stores here in the UK including Goldsmiths, John Lewis (Oxford St, Peter Jones, Welwyn Garden and online) and most recently and exciting, launched the collection on the Jubilee weekend into Selfridges, Oxford st - a true modern British retail institution! What advice do you give grooms about accessories for their big day? Grooms accessories should all be about making a statement but in an understated yet stylish manner. At the end of the day the last thing any groom wants to do is to out shine the Bride! However the groom deserves the finer things in life especially on his wedding day and good accessories are the key.
INTERVIEW 12
Working on the basis of the having chosen your suit style and colour; accessories should be the finishing touch and accent to the outfit. A combination of the finish to the grooms outfit but also complimenting and highlighting the bride as well as brides maids and groomsmen. This can be achieved in a number of ways with the key trends being: 1. Colour - bold blocks colours picking up the wedding theme or bringing the best out in the suit. Blues, greys as standard but dare to wear pink in summer, with purples and ruby reds good statements for autumn tones. 2. Pattern – co-ordinated patterns across your accessories. Having a checker, stripe and dot classics in the tie, pocket hank and socks really pulls it all together. 3. Details - accessories are all about the finer details even if you just notice it but get it right and other people will for sure. Key Accessories: The tie, not too wide, not too thin. 7cm is a good blade width. Not over patterned, block colours. Cufflinks, think more modern classic, not bright and blingy. You want to wear them again and remember your big day. Pocket hank is a must. Pouchette style as preference with a bit more style but even folded pocket square with a dash of colour or pattern. Other key finishing details that are key right now are the tie pin or tie clips. Not only looks sharp but also means you don’t have to worry about your tie position all day. Black onyx, mother of pearl or plain stainless steel with subtle pattern always work best. The combination of sharp detailing, subtle pattern and strong colour and is the key. Try mix and matching these factors to look less staid or drab is a winning wedding formula. Think James Bond style not peacock or dandy……
What do you enjoy most about running your own company? Running my own company is definitely hard work and challenging but I think that is half the fun! Having more control and flexibility that your own business gives, creates the ability to move and react to opportunities quickly and strongly which is key. The results and achievements also mean more when you know all the effort has been your own. If you could return to an earlier fashion era when would it be and why? Classic mid to late 60’s - Sean Connery, James Bond. Michael Caine, The Italian job, Alfie. Steve McQueen, The Thomas Crown affair etc. Where suiting was embraced not just for work or special occasions but as a lifestyle look and for day and night- super sharp with a very keen eye on the classic accessories. Cancer Research UK offers two simple ways to celebrate your wedding while supporting their life-saving work. Give in Celebration is an alternative to the traditional wedding gift list; all you have to do is ask your guests to make a donation instead of (or as well as!) buying a gift. In a few simple steps you can create and personalise a fundraising page which you can then share with family and friends by email or through Facebook. You can share messages and photos and update your page as your wedding plans progress. You will receive regular updates on who has donated and everyone who makes a donation will also receive a ‘thank you’ from the charity for their generous gift. Couples also have the option of giving their guests a selection of specially designed wedding favours, including a limited edition range by luxury designer Jenny Packham. These elegant keepsakes can be ordered with personalised cards and are a meaningful way to thank your guests. These personal and thoughtful touches are a subtle way for couples getting married to celebrate a friend or family member surviving cancer, or to remember someone close to them. Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with with Eleasha Sallis, Founder of Dido & Bendigo for an exlusive interview. What was your inspiration for setting up Dido & Bendigo? The clothing came about in searching for smart, different and youthful formal wear for my then 16 month old son’s Christening. I’ve long felt there were two extremes in boys clothing; very casual and very formal. Boys’ formal wear can be restrictive or a little dated. Boys love dressing up and looking smart, as long as they’re not hindered from having fun or uncomfortable! I think parents like to go for something more individual too for weddings or special occasions. I am passionate about British cloths and manufacturing. Designing the tweeds has been really exciting and an unexpected bonus in creating Dido & Bendigo. The check pattern is much smaller to be in proportion on small frames, the cloth is 100% lambswool at just 320gm, which we then have ‘Teflon’ coated at the mill making it ‘child-friendly’. Proving that children can look smart and young and that tweed can be lightweight, soft and usable is something I’m really proud of. How does your background help in running the company? Our lives are entrenched in the countryside, my background is equestrian and my husband is a Composer. We feel so privileged to live the lifestyle we do and to be able to raise our son. We are both committed to outsourcing locally, often on recommendation from our local network, I am extremely grateful for this and it will be a major factor in the success of the label. How would you like to see the brand develop? I see two ‘arms’ to the Dido & Bendigo brand; one being the Lifestyle & Accessories area, in particular baby and toddler with the luggage and accessories that go with that – I have a whole notebook of ideas! The other arm being the Formal wear collection, always focusing on the ‘fun’ element that is vital in children’s clothing. I believe D&B has created something truly unique and quite special and I hope this can grow.
INTERVIEW
In your collection do you have particular favourites? The Boys collection is the one I’m most excited about, the Merlin Suit encompasses everything I set out to create; the finest cloth, perfect tailoring and finished to the highest standard – and still fun! Every boy from aged 2 to 10 that wore it for sizing and photos really loved it and kept wearing it – that’s success for me! I feel there are so many possibilities for the girls collection too, if we just think outside the box. What is the most useful advice that has been given to you? Definitely to focus your time and energy the things you’re good at and outsource what you’re not! Not always easy when it’s a new start-up and your ‘baby’ but absolutely essential for the long term success of the company and your own well-being. Running a small business is often a challenge, what do you do to relax? Not often a challenge, always a challenge! I go riding on my horse Moley, a 6 yr old we bred ourselves. I’m very proud of him and love his character. It doesn’t matter how tough or stressful the day is, as soon as I get out for a ride, my head clears, I take a breath and all is good. I only wish I could get out more. www.didoandbendigo.co.uk

Just published! Summer Daydreams by Carole Matthews We talk to Carole Matthews and Helen Rochfort, about their careers and how their friendship led to Helen being the inspiration for Carole’s latest novel. We asked Carole: What do you love about Helen’s handbags? They’re so quirky and different. I first came across them when Helen’s photo popped up on my Facebook page. It was Barbara Cartland in her trademark fushia pink and I assumed it must be a romance writer. But it wasn’t,it was just Helen showing her wonderful sense of humour. I fell in love with her handbags and we chatted back and forth for a while. When my publisher decided to create some promotional handbags for The Chocolate Lovers’ Club, we turned to Helen. That’s when she and I became firm friends. She’s the inspiration for Summer Daydreams and it’s been fun working together. You often visit the places where your books are set, what has been the most atmospheric place you have visited? I think it has to be the Masaai Mara. I set my last novel, Wrapped up in You, there. It was the story of Janie Johnson who decides to seek adventure and ends up getting more than she bargained for when she falls hopelessly in with a fully-fledged Masaai warrior. The Massai Mara was just such an amazing place to visit. The sights and sound of Africa really inspired me. The amazing thing is that when you visit a place for research, it always throws up some wonderful material for the plot that you never expected. It’s why I like to go to the place I’m writing about. I’ve just finished a research trip in Swedish Lapland and that was pretty awe-inspiring too! But that book won’t be out for a while yet. How do you get new inspiration for your novels? I’m very fortunate really. As I write warm and funny contemporary stories, I’m constantly surrounded by material. Some of my friends have very tortured love lives and don’t mind dishing the dirt with me over a glass of wine! Newspapers and magazines are a good source of stories too. And I’ve had my own share to heartaches and disappointments to draw on too. Your own heart is always a reliable source of inspiration. We asked Helen: What do you love about Carole’s writing? Carole’s writing is very addictive just like chocolate. She manages to write in a way that makes you think, ‘Oh, I’ll read just one more chapter.’ She is very good at creating characters that you can relate to. Her storylines are always jam packed with up and downs and comical twists and turns, and many laugh out loud moments.
INTERVIEW
You are taken on a journey with many visual delights and events, and there is always a happy ending. I particularly like The Chocolate Lovers Club, The Difference a Day Makes, All You Need is Love, Wrapped up in You and, of course, Summer Daydreams. Of all of the handbags that you have designed which is the design that is closest to your heart? It has to be the EAT ME/DRINK ME silver, vintage style, box bag. It is inspired by Alice in Wonderland, one of my greatest inspirations. It was mentioned and perfectly described by Carole in Summer Daydreams. I designed the unique silver frame shape, with a chunky diamante clasp and smooth metal handle covered in a matt silver fabric to reflect the vintage box handbags of the 1950’s and 60’s that I love. The interior has our signature pink satin with plenty of zips and pockets with our pink and purple Helen Rochfort logo. On the outside there are panels of printed fabric. One side has the EAT ME design – a pink cupcake made by myself and my daughter. It was then photographed with my favourite piece of silver damask fabric with EAT ME above the cupcake. It then has a silver ribbon surround, whilst the cupcake is sprinkled with diamantes. The reverse of the handbag has the second fabric panel with the DRINK ME design. A blue and white spot beaker with the same silver damask background with DRINK ME above the beaker. A silver HR charm hangs off the handle. The handbag comes with protective dust bag to keep it safe and clean in a delicious pink and white candy stripe. How do you get new inspiration for your handbags? I find inspiration all around me. From films like the 1970’s Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory, Mary Poppins and French film, Amelie. I find inspiration in vintage stores, sweet shops, toy museums, Grimms Fairytales, fabric markets, ice-cream vans, fairgrounds, old illustrations, pop art, puppets and Alice in Wonderland. We asked Carole and Helen: In today’s social media environment how do people make long-lasting friendships? CM - I think it’s like any other friendship, you can tell when you have a special connection with someone - even if it’s over the internet. In recent years, I’ve gone on to meet in person quite a few people I’ve previously only known through chatting on Twitter or Facebook and it’s worked out well. Some people, I’m happy just to chat with, but will probably never take it further. Friendships, on any level, take a lot of work and the truth of the matter is that we’re all timepoor. I think the sign of a good friendship is when you see someone that you haven’t seen for years and you just pick up as if it was yesterday. Those are the ones that endure. HR – I completely agree with Carole, like any other friendship as long as there is that connection, a friendship can prosper and grow into something really special. I also have met some amazing friends over myspace (back in the day!) and Facebook, from far and wide. My good friend Bea Yagi lives in Japan and when we meet its like no time has passed. A long - lasting friendship is all about giving, helping, tolerance and understanding…. and laughing a lot! Both of you have enduring careers; what still gives you a buzz about what you do? CM - I still love writing, even after having this my twentieth novel published. I like the whole process of putting a book together and there’s nothing quite like the thrill of writing ‘Chapter One’ on that blank screen. There’s still a thrill about seeing your book on the shelves, particularly if it’s selling well! I’m very lucky too as I get to explore another aspect of life every six months whether that’s the theme of my story or the place. There’s always something new and exciting just round the corner.
HR - Designing and creating is my passion and I am very lucky to be able to do what I am doing full-time with my girls and husband around me. It IS very hard work but the satisfaction when a new design is created or you see your collection on a Paris catwalk show, on the arm of a celebrity or in a fashion magazine is fabulous! I aim to produce designs that owners will cherish and enjoy, giving a little joy back into the world. In today’s economic climate why should people still follow their dream? CM - I think it’s tough right now to follow your dream. Banks are very reluctant to lend money to start up businesses and it takes a big leap of faith to step out of your comfort zone during an economic recession. Being a writer, I’m very lucky as my overheads can be very low if necessary - laptop, printer, paper. That’s pretty much the job done. It’s much harder if you want to open a shop or have an idea that requires laying out a lot of cash upfront. I’d always advise that, if you’re a couple, one person stay in their job to support the other and at least bring some money in. On the other hand, if you’re made redundant - and so many people are now - it could be the time to turn your life around and try something completely different. I’ve changed direction completely, twice in my life. It was difficult at the time, but I don’t regret either move. I wouldn’t be a writer now, if I’d stayed in my comfort zone. HR – It is very tough in this climate to follow your dream, it’s tough at anytime. You really have to be very serious, focused, brave and highly ambitious to take that step. The banks are very reluctant to lend anything at all which we found recently, when we wanted funding for expansion. The key is to start off small, and make sure you are financially stable be it with a part or full-time job or any other stream of income for basic needs. You can then start building up your chosen path with that security behind you until it flourishes into something bigger, so that you can then fly with your dream. Is has been the hardest thing ever to follow our dream but the rewards are beyond comprehension. www.helenrochfort.com/ www.carolematthews.com/ Carole Matthews Summer DaydreamsAnd last but not least, here is the book created from their friendship: Summer Daydreams by Carole Matthews Synopsis: Nell McNamara never paid attention in school, spending most of her time daydreaming. Now almost thirty, Nell and boyfriend Olly are working back-to-back shifts just to make ends meet as they care for their adorable four-year-old daughter, Petal. But Nell can’t help but wonder: is life passing her by? So when the chip shop she works in needs a makeover, she jumps at the chance to help out. With her creativity finally unleashed, and backed by the best friends a girl could have, Nell begins designing her own line of must-have handbags. And amazingly, people love them! It seems Nell’s dreams are finally coming true, until she finds out Olly secretly craves the simplicity of their old lives. Soon Nell is asking herself if it really is possible to have it all . . . ? http://www.amazon.co.uk/ Hot Brands Cool Places Verdict Carole Matthews is one of our favourite authors, and Summer Daydreams is a perfect example of Carole at her very best. It’s funny, uplifting and has tremendous pace. Knowing that Helen Rochfort was the inspiration behind the story was an added dimension for us. A wonderful summer read! Highly Recommended!

Highly Recommended! www.accdistribution.com/uk Artists’ Textiles 1940-1976 Geoff Rayner, Richard Chamberlain and Annamarie Stapleton Synopsis: The development of textiles as an art form between 1940 and 1976, and the extent of collaboration between artists and textile manufacturers at this time, is unrivalled in modern art history. Raoul Dufy was the first twentieth-century artist to become seriously and successfully involved in producing textile designs. His work influenced and encouraged many other artists and textile companies in Britain, on the Continent and in America. After the war this movement really flowered with the involvement of leading artists of the day: Picasso, Matisse, Moore, Nicholson, Warhol, Steinberg, to name a few... Artists’ Textiles 1940-1976 is an important and comprehensive survey of this art form in Britain and America. There are approximately 200 colour images, many of which have never been seen before, alongside specially commissioned photography. Hot Brands Cool Places Verdict This is an absolutely stunning book, beautifully illustrated, with fascinating information about how different artists created design for textiles.
Divided into decades with illustrations of the textiles and how they were used in designs from headsquares to curtains, together with biographies of the artists. This delightful book is both an inspiration and a fabulous coffee table talking point. The charming, flamboyant TV chef and owner of the Star of India restaurant in Kensington, London (Hugh Grant’s favourite restaurant), now brings his flair for evolving the tastes of India to a new book. Brought up in London, the scion of a family of Indian restaurateurs, educated in India, and with a home in France, Reza is a true global citizen. His unique culinary perspective means he combines familiar western ingredients with Indian flavours to stunning effect, reinventing French, Persian, American and British recipes, though there is also a chapter, of course, of classic curries. Reza’s food is fresh, healthy and modern. With his informal style and free-thinking attitude to food, Reza plays with the spices of India as only a cook with an encyclopaedic knowledge of the country’s authentic food can. But as Francesco Da Mosto argues in this new two part series, Italian cities meant far more to our greatest author than just a sunlit setting. Francesco takes us on a journey from North to South, visiting the spectacular locations that shaped the Bard’s genius. This series celebrates Shakespeare as a popular entertainer. The emphasis will be on accessibility and our greatest playwright under the blue skies of Italy, with a feel of “Shakespeare meets holiday adventure” as Francesco travels between Venice, Verona, Padua, Milan, Mantua, Florence, Rome, Napoli, Sicily and Capri. Hot Brands Cool Places Verdict We have loved Francesco Da Mosto’s previous visits to Italy and this latest DVD is an absolute feast for your eyes. Once again Francesco Da Mosto gently and charmingly takes the viewer around Italy, this time making the connections between Italy and Shakespeare’s writing. The photography is beautiful and the commentary fascinating, we absolutely loved it. Highly Recommended. http://www.bbcshop. com/
