INTERVIEW 6
You are celebrating your 25th Anniversary this year, what have been your highlights? I can’t believe it’s been 25 years; it has gone so incredibly quickly since my first collection. So much has happened, and the business has grown a great deal, it has been the most wonderful whirlwind journey. There have been endless highlights; I’ve been very lucky. I was 19 when Harrods agreed to take my first collection, and this was a dream come true. Getting the keys to my first shop was another pivotal moment, selling my gowns for the first time in New York, dressing a Spice Girl for the Olympic closing ceremony, and so many others. However the main thing that makes me proud every day is the brides themselves all over the world wearing my designs for the happiest day of their lives, it really is a great honour. What is the inspiration behind your 25th Anniversary 2017 Portrait Collection? My inspiration for the 25th year Portrait collection is the brides themselves. I meet so many lovely Brides throughout the year at my own shops and at Designer’s Days throughout the country. This allows me to see what my brides are wanting, it keeps things fresh for me and new styles are often formed from existing real bride looks. I always design a very diverse collection of styles and silhouettes, as I believe there should be a dress for every shape, size and age. Fabrics are another source of inspiration, when I see a beautiful fabric I can often imagine the dress I would create from it. What do you enjoy most about creating your designs? Seeing a happy glowing bride feeling the best she has ever felt in her Suzanne Neville dress is by far the best part of doing what I do. And on a day-to-day basis, I love being in the studio everyday, creating and working out bespoke patterns and overseeing each hand made dress, and my wonderful team. What advice do you give your Brides about finding the perfect dress for them? Do a little research before you decide where to look for your wedding dress, recommendations from friends is a good way to start the process. Keep an open mind when it comes to style, you may be surprised by what you like. Allow the consultants in the boutiques you visit to advise you, they have experience and know the dresses inside out so can often create a completely new look that you may adore. What are your plans for the future? Going forward, I believe changing with the times is essential; I aim to keep the future collections fresh and current. We already have successful stockists overseas but I hope to expand this further, we’ve recently taken on a new stockist in Dubai, which is really exciting. Overall, if we can carry on the way the last 25 years has gone I’ll be absolutely thrilled. What do you do to relax? I have Sundays off work to relax and spend time with my family, and my husband often treats me to breakfast at my favourite brunch place, Fortnum and Mason. Everyone that knows me knows I get bored quite quickly, and miss work, I wouldn’t enjoy relaxing on a beach for two weeks. www.suzanneneville.com

INTERVIEW 10
You have had an amazing career, what have been your highlights? Working on TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding in 2011 was of course a huge highlight for us and a memory I will always cherish. Recently we have had dresses from weddings featured by Vogue, twice in one week if I remember correctly! Opening our first Boutique in Chelsea last year was also a huge and exciting milestone. What do you enjoy most about creating your designs? There are quite a few things! If I had to pick one part I enjoy the most, it would have to be working with the brides and helping them to create their ideal wedding. Seeing happy clients on their special day is a very fulfilling thing and to know you played a small part in that is always very special. What advice do you give your Brides about choosing the outfits for their bridesmaids/flower girls, or pageboys? I think the best advice I can give is to make sure the bride feels comfortable with every aspect of her special day, especially her bridesmaid and flower girl dresses. When we work with any bride we like to sit down and discuss her ideas for the wedding and its theme. From there we build until we find something that works. Certain parts of the design are woven into the theme, whether it’s the choice of the main fabric for the dresses or a splash of colour in the sash or bows. Clever use of accessories such as shoes and hair bows are also good ways to bring the wedding theme into the bridesmaid’s outfit. Personally my favorite is having little girls in different shades of sweet pea colours in the summer and red or 11 navy with a metallic sash in the winter.
You’ve organized many photo shoots over the years how do you manage to create such stunning and natural shots of the children? Shooting can definitely be a tough couple of days but it’s wonderful to see the dresses come to life. We have a great team around us who make the parents and children (and us!) feel at ease. They make the whole thing run smoothly and make it fun experience rather than a hassle. For anyone planning a children’s shoot a few tips that have come in handy for us over the years - have lots of small breaks and snacks on hand for the little ones to enjoy. This makes sure they don’t get to cranky or upset and also ensures smiling, natural faces in front of the camera. Invite more mini models than you think you need. There is sometimes someone off-colour or ‘not in the mood’. You have one crack at getting the shots you need to cover yourself. What are your plans for the future? We’ve got a really busy rest of the year coming up. Later on we’ll be celebrating the one-year anniversary of the Chelsea boutique - of which we’re very proud! We also have Brides the Show in October, which should be great as well as Pitti Bimbo in January 2017, which we are really excited about! We’re also about to go into an amazing new retail development in Qatar. It is opening in the autumn and we are about to ship their first order – so it’s all very busy at the minute. What makes a perfect weekend for you? You can’t beat a walk in the countryside. I’m very privileged to live in the beautiful county of Wiltshire, which is such a brilliant source of inspiration for me. I also love a Sunday roast with the family! www.nickimacfarlane.com

Creating a unique and beautiful home
After planning the wedding, creating your home is the next most important activity for any couple. Today perhaps more than ever before there is the opportunity to style a home that is unique to you. In an ideal world, most of us would love the opportunity to start with a blank canvas, in reality many couples have existing furniture, or are living in rented accommodation which can limit their freedom. However, getting married can present an opportunity to either look at your joint collections objectively, or create a wish list of items that you would like to purchase. In the run-up to the wedding why not take the opportunity to visit some boutique hotels, or luxury holiday rentals and identify the little touches that make your stay special. Providing comfort for guests is often a priority for those companies who want to stay at the top of their game. Investing in quality bed linen, comfortable mattresses and powerful showers can provide inspiration for what you18would like to replicate in your own home.
Look at their colour schemes, and identify what you like or dislike, often rooms are stripped back to bare essentials which can help you re-assess what you really need in a home. Clearing out clutter before you set up home together is really important, it is so easy to move from your parents home to your own place taking items that may have a sentimental value, but no longer serve any real purpose. You may also be under pressure from your parents to take your lifetime treasures with you. Try and resist, but promise to come and clear out your possessions as soon as possible. Although investing in commercial storage can seem a good idea, in reality once it is locked away out of sight it is so easy to forget about it until you start to realise what you could buy with that money instead. If you are in the fortunate position of starting with a blank canvas, spend time identifying what is really important in setting up your home. Look at the floor plans of the space you have available, and think about the main items of investment. Comfort and functionality should be top of your list, and ideally try the furniture out before buying, particularly beds and seating. Also try and think about your lifestyle, if you and your partner both love lying out on a sofa, you may need to purchase two sofas so that you can both relax. Always check the contents of the cushions, don’t be seduced by a stunning design that isn’t comfortable. Also think carefully about the colour, and the long-term implications of its durability, if and when you decide to have children. Being able to come home and sink into something comfortable is a worthy investment. The same principle applies to the purchase of beds, as current generations are taller, we have seen the creation of King and Super-King beds, this has an implication in the space available in the bedroom, but the advantage of allowing you both to sleep comfortably. Again always buy from a reputable company and ideally try them out before buying. Once you have identified the core basics for your home, you can then start adding your own personal touches, and this is when the fun begins. There are so many beautiful options in colour and accessories that styling your own space can become a lifetime passion. Finding items of furniture that are unique, or created for you, can really help to make your home very special. Always try and think about the practicality of what you actually do in your home if either, or both of you work from home it is really important to create space for this, but also to find ways of separating this area from your relaxing and living space. If entertaining is important to you, think about use of the kitchen and dining areas to ensure you have both the equipment and space to do this successfully. In all areas less is more, investing in quality, and thinking carefully about how you style your home means that you can relax and enjoy your life together! We also have a fabulous collection of companies in in our latest Homes issue: http://issuu.com/hotbrands/docs/hbcpmay2016 Image courtesy of Robert Welch.

Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Rebbie Wellwood-Green, Operations Manager, The Real Flower Company for an exclusive interview
INTERVIEW 22
Can you tell us a little about the history of The Real Flower Company? The Real Flower Company was set up in 1995 by the founding director Rosebie Morton who started growing garden roses in a walled garden at her family farm, her mission was to bring exquisitely scented natural roses back to the floristry industry and cut flower market and since then it has grown from strength the strength. What have been the highlights for the company in the last few years? We have had some amazing moments here at The Real Flower Company; being part of so many gorgeous weddings and exhibiting at both Chelsea and Hampton Court for two years running, plus featuring on Countryfile was the icing on the cake as we are all big fans here in the office. Where do you start when creating a design for a wedding bouquet? You have to listen to what your brides are saying and the up and coming trends for the following year. First thing in the morning I look at a couple of blogs my favourite being Rock My Wedding and you can get a real feel for what is happening in the Bridal world. We then are blessed with so many gorgeous flowers, herbs and foliage’s that our creative team just get to play. What advice do you give your Brides about choosing their flowers? Always have a budget in mind and start your mood board. The more visual you can be the more the florist can pick up on your personality and requirements. 23
If you were designing a bouquet for yourself what would you include? Well, I was lucky enough to do exactly this last year and I was actually very lucky as I was married legally and then had a blessing on the Saturday so I was able to have TWO bouquets which meant I could use some (not all) of my favourite flowers. The first I used our signature Margaret Merrill and Princess Alexandra and went for a traditional tie and the second I went bonkers with clashing colours and soft finishes such as peach Astilbe trailing Jasmine, Spindle berry and my ultimate favourite flower Tuberose, it was finished off with trialing multicolour ribbons which matched my hair piece. What makes a perfect weekend for you? The three F’s Flowers, Food and Friends! www.realflowers.co.uk
