Hotel Insider has a chat with Kashif Zaman who helms the EQ Lines Group, a regional powerhouse in logistics. Now celebrating its 10th Anniversary, his Company works with some of the biggest names here including Lily F&B, Standard and Origin, and Best Buy Maldives.
Presently, the company has offices across South Asia and in Dubai and there is more expansion on the horizon. Kashif tells us about their journey, their strengths and shares some success stories in this edition of Conversation.
Hotel Insider: As the Chief Executive Officer of Equivalent Lines (EQ Lines Group), what strategies did you implement to drive the company's growth and propel it to new heights?
Kashif Zaman: From the start, I envisioned becoming a key player in the regional Supply Chain Management business. Therefore, we laid a strong foundation by prioritising certain aspects, placing significant emphasis on investing in HR and IT, as I firmly believe that a workforce can either make or break any business. Of course, having a visionary leader to guide and establish a clear command and control structure is crucial. Another vital factor that I always recognized is the role of IT in the ever-developing business landscape. We upheld these two commitments and ensured that we consistently stayed on track and implemented our vision.
Hotel Insider: How has EQ Lines Group developed a diverse portfolio of logistics services under your leadership? Can you provide examples of the industry needs the company caters to?
Kashif Zaman: At EQ Lines, despite modest beginnings, we swiftly evolved into a prominent regional company. Growing consistently, we strategically added supply chain verticals at regular intervals, while closely monitoring the ever-changing demands of our customers. For instance, we foresaw that key players in the Pharma industry, such as STO, Medtech, and AMDC, were progressively shifting towards more specialized Pharma Logistics solutions with global standards. To cater to their needs effectively, we proactively acquired technical
expertise and the latest techniques in-house. Moreover, we established partnerships with global Pharma logistics specialized platforms and freight companies, elevating our routine procedures to specialized service scales. This enabled us to provide our customers with international standard solutions, leading to their satisfaction and continued loyalty. Additionally, the Food Industry has been another sector where EQ Lines has left a profound impact. We have been dedicatedly serving industry giants like SNO, FMS, Lilly F&B, and BBM, meeting all their international freight requirements and contributing value to their businesses through timely sailings and faster transit times. Recognising that the food industry demands unique handling requirements distinct from regular cargoes, we diligently developed in-house capabilities to cater to their specific needs and exacting standards.
Hotel Insider: What were the key factors behind the company consistently achieving growth year after year?
Kashif Zaman: The consistent growth and upward trajectory of our company can be attributed to three major factors that have been instrumental since day one:
Well-Defined Institutional Hierarchy: Our success is rooted in a robust institutional hierarchy, with decisive leadership at the helm. This top-tier leadership has guided the company with a clear vision and strategic direction, driving us towards our goals.
Continuous Investment in Human Resources: We have always recognised the significance of our workforce in shaping the company's achievements. As a result, we consistently invest in our employees by providing a quality working environment and on-the-job training. Furthermore, we offer better financial incentives to motivate and retain top talent, fostering a highly skilled and dedicated team.
Embracing Advanced IT Solutions: In today's rapidly evolving world, we firmly believe that freight companies must adopt cutting-edge IT solutions to deliver flawless and efficient services to the market. Hence, we prioritize the gradual and regular transformation of our systems to incorporate sophisticated, high-tech IT solutions. This approach enhances our operational efficiency, streamlines processes, and ensures that we remain at the forefront of the industry.
These three factors together have been the pillars of our success, enabling us to maintain sustained growth and consistently deliver exceptional services to our valued customers.
Hotel Insider: Could you elaborate on the establishment of offices in strategic locations such as Dubai, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan? How do these offices contribute to catering to the growing demands of the logistics industry in their respective regions?
Kashif Zaman: The unique capacities and diverse roles of each of our offices in their respective markets contribute to a consolidated impact, functioning as a cohesive unit. For instance, our EQ Lines Pakistan office excels in handling customers from the textile industry and managing trade lanes such as PAK-EU and PAK-USA. In contrast, the Maldives office focuses on a mix of commodities, ranging from hotel amenities to food items, and serves trade lanes like China-Maldives and Malaysia/ThailandMaldives. The Dubai office efficiently handles the total Supply Chain Management for high-tech equipment manufacturers like Wavetec and furniture importers. Meanwhile, in Sri Lanka, we cater to customers like JAT Holdings and Epic Lanka, covering a broad spectrum of industries, from paints to technology.
The diversity of our customer base and the varied services we provide are a clear indication of the freight and logistics solutions we offer. By combining the volumes handled by each office, we wield substantial procurement and negotiation power with MLOs (Main Line Operators) or VSL (Vessel) Operators, allowing us to secure competitive rates and ensure ample space for our customers. This advantageous situation greatly supports our headquarters and

strengthens our position in the market. Having multiple offices strategically located in different regions grants us a significant edge in meeting the needs of a wide range of industries and clients. It reinforces our ability to provide tailored solutions and seize opportunities for growth, ultimately bolstering our overall performance as a freight and logistics provider
Hotel Insider: What is your vision for EQ Lines Group's global presence? How do you plan to further expand and strengthen the company's position in the logistics market?
Kashif Zaman: We are determined to pursue expansion plans while maintaining strong existing operations. We have recently opened an office in Dubai, marking our entry into the Middle Eastern market. We are particularly interested in establishing a presence in Saudi Arabia due to its significant investments in tourism infrastructure. EQ Lines aims to leverage its expertise in projects and hospitality logistics to actively participate in these expansions.
The team is fully prepared and committed to setting up offices in key locations such as KSA, Oman, Qatar, and Bahrain before December 2025. Our goal is to become a reliable and capable logistics partner for businesses in these countries, contributing to their growth and development.
EQ Lines believes that this expansion will create new opportunities and enhance its reputation as a trusted logistics provider. We are confident in our ability to establish a strong presence in these dynamic markets while upholding our high standards of service.
Hotel Insider: Are there any specific achievements or success stories you would like to highlight during your time as CEO of
EQ Lines Group?
Kashif Zaman: When you establish an enterprise and navigate through its ups and downs over the years, you encounter defining moments during the continuous struggle. Some of these moments leave a lasting impact on the business. One such instance we experienced was during the sudden outbreak of the COVID-19 crisis. This unforeseen event resulted in significant business losses and immense pressure on every aspect of our operations. We faced challenges such as a sudden drop in existing business, some companies closing down, and others going out of business permanently. Even the largest freight companies worldwide were resorting to staff layoffs and temporary shutdowns. In contrast, we made a bold decision that set us apart from the norm. Instead of downsizing, we chose to hire more staff and extend our working hours. This decision was met with some scepticism within the company, but I strongly believed that by bringing in more talented individuals, our company's capacities would elevate to new heights. This proved to be the right call, and by the end of 2022, we had experienced remarkable growth of over 88% in just two years.
The credit goes to our management's timely decision to adapt to the sudden changes in the global business environment. Embracing this proactive approach enabled us to overcome the challenges posed by the pandemic and position ourselves for substantial growth. These defining moments and the strategic decisions we made during the crisis have left a significant and positive impact on our company's trajectory.
Hotel Insider: Looking forward, what are your goals and aspirations for the future of EQ Lines Group and the broader logistics industry?
Kashif Zaman: We want to be a fully equipped freight and logistics enterprise with strong holds and presence in ISC, ME, ASEAN, Mainland China, by 2030 with 100% own established set-ups.
We have always been keen in playing vital role in international trade and facilitate the processes by continuously evolving economical and efficient freight and logistics solutions for the trade.
As a young and developing democracy, the Maldives stands at a crucial juncture in its history, where the encouragement and cultivation of informed and engaged citizens, especially young people, through comprehensive civic education plays a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s future.
Civic education and engagement are the foundations upon which a strong and resilient democratic society is built. It equips individuals with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to participate actively in the political, social, and economic spheres of their country. In the Maldivian context, civic education serves as a bridge connecting citizens to their rights, responsibilities, and the mechanisms of governance. Over the past two decades, the Maldives has made significant strides in its democratic journey. From holding multi-party elections to codifying human rights within the constitution, this arduous process has contributed to creating a better space for people to practice their civic duties.
However, the pursuit of improved wellbeing for its youth has not kept pace with the impressive economic growth and the democratization process. A substantial portion of the population is challenged to access the necessary resources and opportunities to uplift their quality of life. This is particularly pronounced among the youth, who often end up disengaging from policy-making processes and meaningfully participating in socially relevant discussions. The prevalence of issues such as substance abuse, involvement in criminal gangs, and vulnerability to social tensions has resulted in a significant number of Maldivian young people residing on the peripheries of a society that may be perceived as offering them insufficient support – with the result of a little inclination to engage them within civic spaces*. For those under the age of 35, avenues to share lived realities and express grievances, communicate opinions and actively engage in civic and policy-making spaces have been arduous to find. These generations have matured in an era marked by political unrest and a sharp divide between opposing factions, even witnessing family units polarized by these partisan divisions. The experiences shared within young people are also vastly
different between the generations; the circumstances faced by first-time voters and those that are older are incomparably different as well – further evidencing the complexity of the issues.
The mismatch between education opportunities and employment offerings have resulted in a quarter of the youth demographic being unemployed. Particularly in the outer islands, the concentration of job openings in the capital city of Malé has rendered them inaccessible to many. Consequently, a substantial portion of these young individuals harbor deep disillusionment towards public institutions and policy-making processes, and feels that their opinions are mainly sought during electoral campaigning.
So where does Civic Education fit in all of this? It is apparent that a robust democracy depends on an engaged and well-informed citizenry. Civic education promotes awareness of democratic values, the importance of free and fair elections, holding elected officials accountable, protection of individual liberties, and fostering social cohesion.
Though these realities may exist, the Maldives is also faced with certain challenges in the delivery of civic education and the actualization of holistic civic engagement. Given limited resources, the engagement of educators across the archipelago has been challenging to sustain. Various concerned entities have undertaken periodic civic education trainings targeted towards different atolls and islands. However, sustaining these networks is challenging given resource limitations, and a lack of conducive environment to further propagate these discussions and collective organizing. It has also been noted, by both young people and experts alike, that there is an urgent need to integrate and mainstream civic education into the National Curriculum – to actively inform and educate young people on their rights, responsibilities, and opportunities beyond their schooling life.
Despite the challenges, most young people express keenness to increase their civic engagement. In the Youth Vulnerability Assessment (2019) a representative sample of young people voiced a collective desire for improved education and increased assistance in establishing their own livelihoods. Most of these young people further recognizes the risk of social isolation and voiced concerns for creating meaningful spaces and opportunities for their participation in the policy-making mechanisms of the country.
Based on these findings, and the need to create spaces for young people to gain this information, UNDP Maldives has led several interventions in the civics space. The development of the Practice Parliament series, in addition to the most recent Civic Education Trainings contextualized for different regions of the country, all provide key civic education information to young people and women. Through these interventions, the need to further proliferate this information in the journey for every Maldivian to realize their civic responsibilities have become more pronounced. Almost all participants in these interventions posited to the difference made by the utilization of the information in both political and social landscapes.
As the Maldives endeavors to strengthen its democratic foundations, civic education serves as both a solution and a strategy. It equips citizens, especially young people, with the tools they need to shape their own futures and contribute to the growth of their nation. By promoting informed decision-making, social cohesion, and active citizenship, civic education sets a transformative trajectory for the Maldives, where every citizen’s voice is valued and their potential unleashed. In understanding the roles, responsibilities and the inherent rights held as a citizen, young people have more agency to critically evaluate the conditions faced by them and take organized action in addressing these circumstances.
In the Boardroom
Hotel Insider sits down with Azleena Ameen (Azu), founder of Ogaa – a local brand which specialises in making authentic, artisan bath and body products from local ingredients found in the Maldives.
“If you’re looking for an authentic, Maldivian product which can be customised, we do it here.”
Azu shares with us her journey with Ogaa and her thoughts on sustainability in the Maldivian business scene.
Hotel Insider: Could you tell us a little bit about Ogaa first? How did you get into this business?
Azu: Ogaa actually comes from the Dhivehi language word, ogaatherikan which means caring. My husband and I, we first started a business called Artistree in 2017. At the time, we learnt about soap making and started selling it at LeCute, a well-known beauty shop in Male’. Then, in 2019, we decided to create a brand, something that would wholly focus on being sustainable. So, we consulted with brand strategy firm, Ember Blu to create Ogaa, an eco-friendly and wholesome brand focused on making hand-crafted bath and body products in the Maldives.
Hotel Insider: So, you started with soaps first. How have you expanded your business since then?
Azu: We first started with soaps because it was something that was organic, sustainable, and helped us eliminate plastic bottles. It’s also something which enabled us to use locally sourced, Maldivian ingredients such as coconut oil, tamanu oil, moringa leaves, neem leaves and papaya. Moving forward, we now have shampoo bars, conditioner bars, body balms, bath bombs and scented candles. We also make liquid soaps which come in aluminium bottles, and we’ve recently introduced a range of lip balms as well.
Ogaa products are now available for purchase from our website, different resorts, and local islands such as Dhiffushi.
“It’s not easy to make a product while ensuring that each step of the process is eco-friendly and sustainable. Regardless, I think it’s very important for businesses to do the necessary research and incorporate practices in which they can offer better, more sustainable options to customers.”
We currently supply to over 20 resorts in the Maldives and ship to international destinations on an order-basis with special packaging and the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) if required.
Right now, we’re moving from being a boutique product to more of a spa product; a lot of our products are currently used in the spas of Atmosphere Hotels & Resorts. Our products are also very popular with guests who visit the Maldives – it’s an organic, authentic, local product which they can take back home as souvenirs.
We also make customised gift packs for resorts with their logos. Some of our clients include One&Only Reethi Rah, Dusit Thani Maldives and Mirihi Island Resort. If you’re looking for an authentic, Maldivian product which can be customised, we do it here.
Hotel Insider: How do you source the raw materials for your products?
Azu: Anything that is available in the Maldives, we try to source it from here. At the beginning, we used to source from local shops as we didn’t require a large quantity of materials. Now, we have contacts within local islands who provide us with the necessary items.
For our essential oils, soy wax for our candles and some of the carrier oils we use such as almond oil, we have to source from abroad as it’s not locally available.
Hotel Insider: How do you ensure the quality of your products, especially in your skin-care range?
Azu: Prior to establishing the Ogaa brand, we attained the ISO certification for making handmade soaps. This helped us to set a certain standard as a manufacturer of grade 1 soap and ensure that we provide quality products to our customers. As part of this certification, we also have to annually test our soaps and provide a content analysis report for every raw material we use. We make our soaps in small batches, so it’s easier for us to control the quality. Other than that, we always take orders in advance and ask our clients to let us know their requirements ahead of time so that we can ensure the best quality and service.
Hotel Insider: Ogaa as a brand began
with the mission of providing eco-friendly products. How important is sustainability to your business model and practices?
Azu: I grew up here in the Maldives, and even at a young age, the environment was a very important factor to me. As a low-lying island nation, single-use plastic was and is a huge issue for us. So, it was important to us to play our part to eliminate plastic bottles and protect the environment, making sure that our business practices are sustainable and environment friendly.
Hotel Insider: How do you think Maldivians’ attitude to eco-friendly products have changed over the past few years, especially with the introduction of more environmentally friendly alternatives to the market?
Azu: People do find it difficult to shift to using these kinds of products at first, but I’ve found that most people are receptive to learning. They’re curious; they want to know more about eco-friendly products and try out different things. Once they know, more and more people are willing to make the change and they’re dedicated to doing their part to protect the environment. So, as more people invest in themselves – and in the environment – with organic and sustainable products, I would eventually like to see this as a household item rather than a luxury one.
Hotel Insider: In your opinion, in what ways can businesses running in the Maldives contribute to protecting the environment and promoting a more sustainable way of life?
Azu: It’s not easy to make a product while ensuring that each step of the process is ecofriendly and sustainable. For instance, there are so many products that we would like to make as well, but as we don’t use plastic products, we’re limited in that capacity. Regardless, I think it’s very important for businesses to do the necessary research and incorporate practices in which they can offer better, more sustainable options to customers.
Hotel Insider: Thank you for your time, Azu. We wish you all the best in your future endeavours.
Enver Arslan is the Area General Manager of JOALI Maldives and JOALI Being, the first art-immersive resort and wellbeing island respectively, in the Maldives. For this edition of Hotel Insider, we have a chat with Enver about his experiences in the hospitality industry, the JOALI brand and their efforts in promoting ‘responsible luxury’ in the Maldives.
Hotel Insider: You’ve had an illustrious career in the hospitality industry, beginning in Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. Could you tell us about your experiences in the industry?
Enver: I started my career in F&B and Quality Assurance and have had the chance to work in hotels around the world in different capacities. I love being able to explore places and meet new people through my work. For the past few years, being based in the Maldives, I have learned a lot about the people and the culture of the country, and it has been a privilege to watch the hospitality industry here grow over the years.
One of my favourite things about my work is that no two days are the same. Every day brings new challenges, new people, and new lessons to learn. Our doors are open throughout the year for people to create their most special moments with their loved ones, and it is one of the most fulfilling experiences to be able to contribute to that in some way.
Hotel Insider: You’ve recently been promoted from General Manager of JOALI Maldives to the Area General Manager, responsible for overseeing JOALI resorts. What has the change in roles been like?
Enver: I have been a part of JOALI Maldives since its inception, and I was fortunate enough to see JOALI BEING come to life as well. The change in my role now allows me to be a part of all the properties in a more active capacity, and I am able to leverage my experience in a broader context. I am excited to lead collaborative efforts and streamline operations in JOALI while ensuring that each property stays true to its individual roots. I look forward to contributing to the sustained success and growth of the JOALI brand.
Hotel Insider: What sets the JOALI brand and resorts apart from other getaway resorts in the Maldives?
Enver: At JOALI, we believe in joyful and immersive travel. It is a luxury hospitality and lifestyle brand. The Maldives as a destination has a lot to offer, and our islands are no different.
JOALI Maldives is the first art-immersive resort in the Maldives. What sets the resort apart from the rest is our commitment, not only to showcasing art but also to creating joyful moments through engagement and experience of art. Here at JOALI Maldives, we believe that art is not only meant to be looked at, but also to be felt and experienced. Throughout the resort, we have interactive art installations by renowned artists from different parts of the world. One of the most iconic views of JOALI Maldives is the Manta Treehouse, which itself is an art piece by South African artist, Porky Hefer.
JOALI BEING is the first wellbeing island of its kind in the Maldives, inviting wellbeing seekers to reconnect with themselves in the beauty of nature and embark on a transformative journey of self-discovery and renewal with the goal to return home with a new sense of ‘weightlessness.’ Based on the belief that understanding is the key to creating and sustaining wellbeing, the island’s Learning Centre offers a series of educational workshops and experiential classes centred around the Four Pillars of JOALI BEING — Mind, Skin, Microbiome and Energy.
The concepts are quite unique; in addition, JOALI is driven by a commitment to sustainability and female empowerment
which all our activities are centred around.
Hotel Insider: At JOALI, you place great importance on the concept of ‘responsible luxury.’ Could you tell us how sustainability is incorporated across your operations?
Enver: We have tried to incorporate our vision of sustainability into our everyday practices, implementing an eco-conscious approach across both our islands, minimising the consumption of key resources and reducing our carbon footprint.
First and foremost, we ensure that our produces are sourced responsibly. Our commitment to fair trade principles is reflected in ethically sourced tea, coffee, and wood products. We also use local products as much as possible and buy in bulk to avoid packaging waste.
In terms of waste management, we have a glass bottling plant and wastewater treatment system on our islands. We harvest rainwater and use recycled water for gardening.
We are also further shrinking our carbon footprint by conserving energy usage. Along with the use of efficient LED lights and smart controls in the villas, we have launched a pilot project to increase the use of solar energy as well.
In addition to this, the JOALI Reef Restoration Project (JRRP) aims to preserve the coral reefs around the island by planting coral fragments in our nursery. Once the corals reach an appropriate size, we plant them in our house reef to encourage regeneration. Over the past two years, JRRP has nurtured almost 10,000 fragments of hope in our coral nurseries, and we have been experimenting with Mineral Accretion Technology in this process.
We are constantly working on improving ourselves and setting the best example in the industry, and we are proud to have had our efforts recognised by EarthCheck, the world's leading business advisory group specialising in sustainability for the tourism industry. This year, we received the EarthCheck Silver certification, a feat achieved by the dedication and continued efforts of our team to remain steadfast in our sustainability goals.
"We have tried to incorporate our vision of sustainability into our everyday practices, implementing an ecoconscious approach across both our islands, minimising the consumption of key resources and reducing our carbon footprint."
Hotel Insider: You’ve been with JOALI Maldives since its pre-opening, and you’ve worked in the Maldives prior to that as well. How would you describe the shifts in the Maldivian resort industry, especially in terms of sustainable practices?
Enver: In recent years, the hospitality industry has witnessed a significant shift towards more sustainable practices. At the same time, right now, there is an increased focus on community engagement and responsible tourism in the industry. At JOALI, we have always emphasised minimising our ecological footprint and we actively engage with communities across Raa Atoll through different activities.
We are deeply invested in both our environment and the community, and I think this is a crucial element in hospitality nowadays.
I believe that the shift towards more sustainable practices in hospitality aligns with global environmental needs as well as the evolving preferences of conscientious travellers. In a country like the Maldives, it is always important to keep in mind the fragility of our ecosystems.
Hotel Insider: Thank you, Enver. It was our pleasure to speak with you.
The Maldives, a tropical paradise in the Indian Ocean draws over a million tourists annually, seeking its sun-soaked beaches and serene beauty. Tourism not only serves as the linchpin of the Maldivian economy but also as a double-edged sword, bringing prosperity on one flank and environmental challenges on the other.
Conventional tourism practices have often overlooked long-term environmental impacts for shortterm gains, leading to the need for a sustainable approach.
Several resorts in the Maldives have taken the lead in sustainable tourism. They utilize solar energy, desalination plants for water needs, and comprehensive recycling programs.
In this context, sustainable tourism is not just a choice but an imperative for the archipelago. Let’s examine the delicate balance the small island nation seeks to maintain between welcoming tourists and preserving its pristine environment, ensuring that its allure lasts for generations to come.
Sustainable tourism in the Maldives is anchored in practices that respect the local environment, culture, and economy. It is about creating a balance that allows for economic development through tourism while minimising environmental degradation and cultural loss. This means engaging in tourism planning and operations that are ecologically sound, economically viable, and ethically acceptable to local communities.
In recent years we’ve seen resorts reach out to islands in their vicinity and sometimes in the same atoll, helping them on projects from waste management to familiarisation of island communities with the resorts’ working environment. This is an important step if resorts want to dispel doubts and myths about the safety of workers and safeguarding the culture of the country in the workplace.
Tourism contributes to more than a quarter of the Maldives' GDP, reflecting its critical economic role. However, this economic boon has come with costs. The environmental challenges are manifold, including coral bleaching, waste management issues on islands inundated with tourists, and the carbon footprint of international travel. Conventional tourism practices have often overlooked long-term environmental impacts
Stakeholders, including the government, businesses, and local communities, must continue to collaborate to ensure that the allure of the Maldives remains as vibrant as its coral atolls.
for short-term gains, leading to the need for a sustainable approach.
The Maldivian government, recognising the fragility of its environment, has embarked on numerous initiatives to steer tourism onto a sustainable path. This includes strict regulations on waste management, energy use in resorts, and the protection of marine life. Moreover, the government encourages resorts to attain sustainability certifications and adhere to environmentally friendly practices.
Local communities are indispensable stakeholders in the sustainable tourism equation. Their involvement ensures that tourism development benefits them directly and that cultural integrity is maintained. Programs that support local entrepreneurship in tourism, like guesthouse operations on inhabited islands, are examples of sustainable tourism fuelling local economic growth.
We cannot comment on sustainable tourism practices in the country without mentioning the Soneva Namoona initiative. It attempts to provide a blueprint for the elimination of single use plastics, introducing recycling and inspiring a new generation of ‘ocean stewards’ through fostering a love for the sea and the Maldives’ rich marine life.
Soneva Namoona is a partnership between
Soneva Fushi, the three neighbouring island communities Maalhos, Dharavandhoo, and Kihaadhoo, and the international NGO Common Seas. It aims to clear a path for island communities to follow all around the world.
Several resorts in the Maldives have taken the lead in sustainable tourism. They utilize solar energy, desalination plants for water needs, and comprehensive recycling programs. Additionally, conservation efforts, such as coral reef restoration projects and marine protected areas, are integral to some resorts' operations, showcasing a commitment to sustainability.
Solar energy is powering an increasing number of resorts lately, with many being used to cover the rooves of back of house buildings. Some, like Hurawalhi and Kudadoo have proudly displayed their solar sensibilities for guests to experience, as intrinsic front of house components of the resorts. Meanwhile, Solar Sea has been making inroads as well. It involves setting up floating solar modules in the lagoons of resorts and can offer more power to their hosts than through the normal route of covering the tops of back of house buildings with PV panels. This results in much more diesel savings for resorts than via the usual route.
Several top resorts also have mechanisms for harvesting heat from their generators. This byproduct is then used to raise the temperatures of water to be used in guest bathrooms. Some resorts are also using temperature differences in the sea to cool guest rooms. Relying on locally grown items, or even the produce from in-house gardening efforts is in vogue in the resort industry at
large. Often, these gardens are watered using recycled, treated greywater.
That said, the Maldives faces an existential threat from climate change, with rising sea levels posing a direct risk to its very survival. This global challenge adds complexity to local sustainability efforts. Furthermore, the balance between expanding tourism to drive economic growth and keeping it within sustainable limits remains a persistent challenge.
Innovation in sustainable practices, such as advancements in renewable energy, water conservation, and sustainable building materials, are expected to shape the future of tourism in the Maldives. Embracing these innovations will be key to maintaining the Maldives' status as a top tourist destination without compromising its environmental integrity.
The journey of the Maldives towards sustainable tourism is a testament to its commitment to preserving its natural beauty while fostering economic growth. The nation's strategy serves as a model for other destinations grappling with similar challenges. Stakeholders, including the government, businesses, and local communities, must continue to collaborate to ensure that the allure of the Maldives remains as vibrant as its coral atolls. The call to action is clear: sustainable tourism is not merely an option but a necessity for the Maldives to thrive amid the challenges of the 21st century.

Mariyam Maeesha, perhaps better known as Raalhu
Mariyambu, is a local musician working in the resort industry and the 2nd runner-up of the third season of Maldivian Idol.
Although she initially didn’t consider music as a serious career path, Maeesha has now carved a niche for herself as a celebrated artist in the local scene. Here, we chat with her about her journey in music and her experience as a musician in the resort industry.
Hotel Insider: What drew you to the music industry? Have you always been interested in singing?
Maeesha: I think I’ve always been interested in singing, but I was a very shy girl, so I never really thought of pursuing it as a career. I’ve always wanted to do something fun, and I wasn’t really sure what path I wanted to take. But after participating in Maldivian Idol, I thought I would give it a whirl and go forward with music as a career path. And here I am.
Hotel Insider: That’s right, you were the 2nd runner-up of Maldivian Idol Season 3 too. What was the experience like, being on such a public platform and working with different artists?
Maeesha: It was a bit overwhelming because I’d never been used to that kind of attention – the camera, the lights, having to look impeccable and carry yourself in a certain way. All of it was quite stressful but I enjoyed it because I didn’t have to pretend to be anything that I wasn’t. I’m the type of person who likes to have a good time and I wish the same for everyone else, so it was fun working with different artists and getting to know them. But taking part in a competition in front of cameras is definitely a once in a lifetime experience because I don’t think I’ll do it again.
Hotel Insider: So, what’s your career in music been like so far after Maldivian Idol?
Maeesha: It’s actually been very fruitful and I’m very grateful and content with where I am right now.
For musicians here, the usual source of income is by performing at resorts, so I've now spent a consecutive 5 years doing that. I currently have a band, ‘MUSIGARUN’, and while we do mostly play in resorts, we do perform in the Greater Male’ Area and we try to go to other local islands as well to keep
our connections close with the respective communities.
Apart from being a musician, I’m happy to be a person who is accepted by people and has contributed positively to the community. Lots of faces have come my way expressing their fondness towards my music or even just me, and that means a lot to me. I really like the fact that my singing brings people joy. That’s probably been the best part so far.
Hotel Insider: What’s it like being a musician in the resort industry?
Maeesha: We travel to different resorts and perform. The main event at resorts is usually dinner which is what we call a standard or regular gig. You can say we provide the ambience for it, I guess. Otherwise, we might play in a bar or a recreational space or for private functions.
There are in-house artists as well, who stay and perform in one resort. But the rate is usually cheaper, the workload is harder, and you can’t perform at other shows or venues, which is the opportunity cost for staying put.
Hotel Insider: What’s your typical work week like these days? Is it difficult to travel back and forth?
Maeesha: As the festive season is here, my bandmates and I are currently on a pretty tight schedule with practices and gigs. It’s not really difficult to travel, but if our transfers get bumped or if a show gets cancelled on short notice, then our calendars have to be readjusted to the change and that sometimes gets in the way of our other commitments. Other than that, it’s alright.
But it can get very heavy when we travel. For example, if a resort doesn’t have a drum set, then it’s a heavy day for the drummer, which means it’s a workout day for all of us!
Hotel Insider: Do you think people’s perceptions of women working in this industry have changed over the years?
Maeesha: I would say, yes. People are more aware and more welcoming now. But even so, there have been some instances, even if very few, where I’ve faced some discrimination. But I don’t allow it. Instead, I just offer my service,
my respect and I do my job, which helps me to maintain a good relationship with people.
Hotel Insider: In your opinion, what can be done to improve the music industry for local artists?
Maeesha: At resorts, there are instances where international bands or artists are taking up the music space, which is perhaps not moderated to the level it should be. I also think that if we can make the local music scene a bit more global, then we don’t have to depend on resorts like we do now. The same way we market Maldives as a destination, we can globally market our artists too, and we have a lot of talent here that we can disseminate like that.
Nevertheless, the local scene is really improving, and entertainment is now being seen as an essential component of F&B at resorts, which is great. Some city places are now selling tickets and offering music and food as an experience.
Hotel Insider: What’s your advice to youth, especially young women who aspire to follow a similar path to yours?
Maeesha: Over the years, my advice has been changing as I’ve been changing. But the most important thing is consistency. I’ve had moments where I lose my consistency as well, so this is something I tell myself too.
Be grateful, ask questions and listen to people’s advice, but try to recognise what works for you and what doesn’t. And do things that make you feel good which is where creativity shines on.
Hotel Insider: Before we end the interview, what are your plans for the future?
Maeesha: Make a lot of music. I want to build my musical knowledge and learn a lot. Right now, I’m learning more about the theoretical side of music and exploring different genres. I’m making my own music too, which I’m excited to release next year!
Thank you, Hotel Insider, for everything that you do for us artists!
Hotel Insider: Thank you, Maeesha. Good luck!
