Stuart De San Nicolas
A top-tier hotelier with over 30 years' experience, Stuart De San Nicolas thrives in managing the unique yet complementary challenges of luxury hotels. His journey began in 1993 at the Hyatt Regency group in France, honing his skills at a global level where he has since built a distinguished reputation.
Stuart’s interest in remote locations and extensive experience has brought him to the Maldives where he currently holds the position of Cluster General Manager of Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas, Avani+ Fares Resort, and NH Collection Maldives Havodda. At Minor Hotels, Stuart adeptly oversees multiple properties, navigating the intricacies of the cluster general manager role. For this edition of Hotel Insider, we have a chat with Stuart on his professional journey. With each in-house brand at Minor Hotels contributing individually to the group’s growth objectives, Stuart’s newest challenge is to deploy his inspiration and expertise to achieve service excellence and commercial consistency, two of his fortés.
Hotel Insider: Looking at your last 5 years of work, it seems you have a liking for island destinations. From Mauritius to French Polynesia and now the Maldives, what intrigues you about working in island destinations?
Stuart: What intrigues me about working in island destinations is the unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and the opportunity to create exceptional guest experiences. Places like Mauritius, French Polynesia, and the Maldives offer some of the most stunning landscapes in the world, with pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters that provide a breathtaking backdrop for our properties. The cultural diversity of each island adds another layer of fascination, allowing me to immerse myself in different traditions and incorporate local elements into our guest offerings.
Managing luxury properties in these destinations is particularly exciting because it attracts a high-end clientele seeking bespoke
experiences. This environment challenges me to continuously elevate our service standards and innovate in hospitality management. The logistical and environmental challenges of operating in remote locations push me to find creative solutions, which is both intellectually stimulating and professionally rewarding. Working in island destinations also allows for a deeper connection with the local community and a focus on sustainable practices. It's gratifying to contribute to the local economy and engage in conservation efforts, ensuring these beautiful places are preserved for future generations. The dynamic and fulfilling nature of working in island settings continually inspires and motivates me, making it a truly unique and rewarding experience.
Hotel Insider: What does a day look like in your current position as Cluster GM of Minor Hotels?
Stuart: A typical day in my role as Cluster General Manager of Minor Hotels in the Maldives is centered around strategic oversight, enhancing guest experience, fostering employee wellbeing, and driving growth.
My day begins with a strategic review of our key performance indicators, focusing on occupancy rates, guest satisfaction scores, and financial metrics. This sets the stage for the day's priorities and helps in making informed decisions to ensure we are on track with our targets.
I then meet with department heads to discuss operational opportunities and sales and marketing strategies. We analyze market trends, competitor activities, and guest feedback to refine our approaches and ensure we are maximizing our revenue potential while delivering exceptional value to our
guests. This strategic alignment across departments is crucial for maintaining our competitive edge.
Guest experience is at the heart of everything we do. I spend part of my day in the property I directly manage and others while doing site inspections, engaging with guests, listening to their feedback, and understanding their needs. This direct interaction allows me to gather insights that inform our service strategies and ensure we are consistently exceeding guest expectations.
Employee wellbeing and development are also key strategic priorities. I hold regular meetings with our human resources team to review staff performance, identify training needs, and discuss initiatives to enhance employee satisfaction and retention. By investing in our team's growth and creating a supportive work environment, we ensure that our staff are motivated and equipped to deliver outstanding service.
Daily connection with all the general managers in my cluster is vital for optimizing business operations and discussing strategy. We hold regular meetings to talk business, share best practices, and attend weekly sales and revenue meetings. This constant communication and collaboration enable us to address challenges promptly and continuously improve our service standards. We also work on how to enhance our synergies in terms of staffing, allowing us to move our team members from one property to another when needed in low or high occupancy.
Growth and innovation are constant focuses. I dedicate time to long-term planning and development projects, such as exploring new business opportunities, enhancing our property offerings, and implementing sustainable practices. This forward-thinking
approach helps us stay ahead in the industry and continuously improve our operations.
The day often concludes with a review of the day's achievements and challenges, ensuring that we maintain momentum towards our strategic goals. This comprehensive approach, balancing strategic oversight with a strong emphasis on guest experience, employee wellbeing, and growth, is what drives Minor’s success in delivering luxury hospitality in the Maldives.
Hotel Insider: You have an impressive track record of increasing the average daily rate (ADR) at your postings. What key elements do you focus on to maintain and increase growth in ADR?
Stuart: To maintain and increase growth in the Average Daily Rate (ADR), I focus on several key elements that drive value and demand for our properties.
Firstly, market positioning and differentiation are crucial. Understanding our unique selling points and effectively communicating them to our target market helps us stand out. This includes highlighting the exclusivity, luxury, and unique experiences our properties offer, such as bespoke services, private villas, and exceptional dining experiences.
Revenue management strategies play a pivotal role. This involves analyzing market trends, booking patterns, and competitor pricing to set optimal rates.
Enhancing guest experience is another critical focus. By providing exceptional service and creating memorable experiences, we not only attract high-paying guests but also encourage repeat visits and positive reviews. This includes personalized services, unique activities, and consistently exceeding guest expectations.
Targeted marketing and sales efforts are essential to reach high-value guests. We leverage digital marketing, social media, and partnerships with luxury travel agents to attract affluent travelers. Tailored promotions and packages that cater to specific guest needs and preferences also help drive higher ADR. Investing in property upgrades and amenities ensures we maintain a premium offering. Regularly updating facilities, adding new features, and ensuring our properties are in pristine condition contribute to justifying higher rates. Guests are willing to pay more for modern, luxurious, and well-maintained accommodations.
Customer loyalty programs and direct booking incentives help increase ADR by encouraging guests to book directly with and allows us to build stronger relationships with our guests, leading to repeat business and higher rates.
"Working in island destinations allows for a deeper connection with the local community and a focus on sustainable practices, ensuring these beautiful places are preserved for future generations."
Lastly, staff training and development are vital. A well-trained, motivated team delivers better service, which directly impacts guest satisfaction and perceived value. Investing in our employees ensures they are equipped to provide the high level of service expected at our luxury properties.
By focusing on these key elements, we create a compelling value proposition that supports sustained growth in ADR, ensuring our properties remain highly desirable and profitable.
Hotel Insider: What’s the one aspect of your current role that is non-negotiable for you?
Stuart: The one aspect of my current role that is non-negotiable for me is maintaining an unwavering commitment to exceptional guest experience. Ensuring that each guest receives personalized, high-quality service and leaves with memorable experiences is paramount.
This commitment encompasses several non-negotiable practices. First, consistent quality and excellence in every detail, from the cleanliness of the rooms to the quality of the food, must meet the highest standards. Second, actively listening to guest feedback and swiftly addressing any concerns is crucial to ensure that guests feel heard and valued. Third, our staff must be well-trained, motivated, and aligned with our commitment to guest satisfaction, requiring continuous investment in their development. Fourth, tailoring services to meet the individual needs and preferences of each guest is a hallmark of luxury hospitality, and we strive to anticipate and exceed guest expectations through thoughtful, personalized touches.
I have a clear vision as an expatriate to share my knowledge with the local community & team members and help them grow in their careers. It is important to me that local employees are empowered to take control of their career paths. We are welcomed in the Maldives, and I have a high respect for the local community, for which I am very thankful. By prioritizing these elements, we not only enhance the guest experience but also
foster loyalty, encourage positive reviews, and drive repeat business. This focus on exceptional guest experience, combined with a dedication to developing local talent, is the cornerstone of our success and something I am unwaveringly committed to maintaining.
Hotel Insider: You’ve worked with different cultures. What sets Maldivian hospitality apart?
Stuart: Maldivian hospitality is distinguished by its genuine warmth, personalized service, and deep connection to the natural beauty of the islands. What sets it apart are several unique aspects:
Firstly, the natural friendliness and warmth of the Maldivian people create an inviting and comfortable atmosphere for guests. There is a sincere desire to make visitors feel welcome and at home, which is evident in every interaction.
Secondly, the emphasis on personalized service is a hallmark of Maldivian hospitality. Staff go above and beyond to cater to individual guest preferences and needs, ensuring a tailored and memorable experience. This level of attentiveness and customization makes each guest feel uniquely valued.
The Maldivian culture's deep connection to the sea and nature also plays a significant role. This connection is reflected in the hospitality industry, where there is a strong focus on showcasing the natural beauty of the islands. Activities such as snorkeling, diving, and sunset cruises are not just offered as services but as experiences that highlight the stunning marine life and landscapes.
Sustainability and environmental stewardship are also integral to Maldivian hospitality. There is a concerted effort to preserve the pristine environment, and this commitment to sustainability is communicated to guests, who are encouraged to participate in eco-friendly practices and conservation efforts.
Lastly, the fusion of traditional Maldivian culture with luxury service standards creates a unique hospitality experience. Guests can enjoy high-end amenities and services while also engaging with local customs, cuisine, and traditions, offering a rich and immersive cultural experience.
I am incredibly thankful for the incredible teams we have under Minor in the Maldives and very proud of them. Their dedication, skill, and commitment to excellence are what truly make our properties exceptional and ensure that every guest has an unforgettable experience.
Hotel Insider: Thank you, Stuart. It was our pleasure to speak with you.
Dislodging Humankind from its Selfie
By Enrico Gaveglia, UNDP Resident Representative in the Maldives
If the ocean suddenly disappeared from before our eyes, what would we miss?
Certainly, the world’s largest carbon sink; a natural coastline defense system; nutrients from the sea that also feed terrestrial ecosystems; a crucial food source for billions of people; industries such as shipping, tourism, and fisheries; a treasure trove of biodiversity - a loss inflicted upon nature and us, affecting the well-being of people and the planet.
And this is just a drop in an ocean of loss. The ocean is not just a vast expanse of water; it is the heart of our planet's ecological, biodiversity, economic and social systems. Its removal would set off a domino effect of consequences that would reverberate through every facet of our existence. If it lasts.
Yet, it is not just our water, but our air, soil, flora and fauna - everything around us carries an intrinsic value, that translates to immediate benefits, and ultimately to socio-economic gains. This is why we need the accounting of our natural capital - an asset to humankind.
Those who perceive the loss of nature at every cut we impose on it, call for justice, climate justice, and how it is closely tied to our responsibility as custodians of the environment. It is simple. When you cherish something, you want to protect it. And when all you value around you is harmed or taken from you, you rebel in the quest for justice. We do not possess nature, despite all our efforts to convince ourselves; at best, we are custodians of this Earth, and we value it deeply.
In the context of climate change, this justice is a right woven into our understanding of nature. It means holding those responsible for environmental damage accountable. Often, these perpetrators are located far away from the places they harm, as seen in the case of global warming affecting our beautiful chain of islands, the Maldives, a nation experiencing severe climate effects. Where Maldives contributes only 0.03 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions but sea-level rise poses an existential threat to the country since four-fifths of the nation’s islands are only a metre above sea level*. When humaninduced climate change poses a threat, there is an emergent movement requesting at least for compensation, as reintegration and regeneration efforts will have to be taken into account. Loss = damages and repair.
The problem is justice systems aren't always equipped to handle these complex environmental cases. They lack the policies and a solid rule of law to make things right. But as the calls for climate justice, and loss and damage** grow louder, we are beginning to realize the urgency of connecting environmental harm with accountability.
This is where we dive into climate finance. It is a lifeline for fighting climate change. When the challenges of climate pressure surpass the capabilities of public revenue, climate finance is called to step in. It provides the resources needed to prepare for and respond to severe climate events. This support is not limited to governments – it extends to a call for action to private capital to support climate change
mitigation and emergency responses too. In countries like the Maldives, public revenue is limited, and the human dimension is uneven when compared to the natural assets at hand. Consequently, to protect a true global asset just below this part of the Indian Ocean, taxing Maldivians, half a million people, is simply not right and certainly alone cannot repay the costs associated with a climate change that has already occurred. It's akin to attempting to replenish a desiccated mangrove water body, one bucket at a time – it's just not enough, not even possible.
Adding up the value of nature and incorporating it into public and private budget records could resonate to start with. As losses are recorded annually on a crude balance sheet of accounts, both public and private capital that shares our climate goals are involved. By blending resources from both the public and private sectors, we have a shot at creating a promising approach to revisiting how they tackle climate change, treating nature as an asset.
Capital calls for capital, and it could be challenging to articulate strategic options that induce a better balance between generating profit and addressing the increasing deficit inflicted upon nature. The battle is against climate change but likely much more against the era of humans, at the center of any socioeconomic design of our existence. Dislodging humankind from a picturesque ocean backdrop is not going to be easy, but if we don’t act now, it will happen anyway.

In the Boardroom
Ibrahim Shiuree
Hotel Insider chats with Ibrahim Shiuree, the newly appointed CEO & MD of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), about his extensive career in sports and project management and how he is now applying his expertise to lead MMPRC.
He shares his vision for elevating tourism through creative strategies and sustainable practices that align with the bigger pictureto achieve 5 million tourists in 4.5 years.
Hotel Insider: You have an impressive portfolio spanning project management, sports administration, and marketing. How has this unique blend of experiences prepared you for your current role?
Ibrahim Shiuree: I started as a secretary at Iskandar School straight after my O’levels. It was a unique experience, and sometimes I even had to step in as a teacher due to a shortage of staff. Although I was very young and inexperienced, it was an interesting start to my career.
Following that, I worked at the Ministry of Youth and Sports in different departments which required me to travel to islands to conduct monitoring. Later, after completing my degree, I took on media-related work. I also served as a board member at the Maldives Hajj Corporation when it was still in its early stages. My involvement in sports has always been significant, which makes teamwork come naturally to me. I've participated in all aspects, from being a player, coach, and executive committee member to later taking on management roles.
Throughout my career, I've had to manage various challenges, including those related to the Hajj Corporation's queue system implementation and multiple private sector projects. As a project director, I actively led turnkey projects, including harbor and airport construction. My hands-on approach ranged from operating an excavator to diving with the panel team.
I believe the staff is the most important asset of any organization, and teamwork is crucial. You can ask others about my work ethic; I value people for who they are and treasure their individuality. Observing a lack of teamwork initially, I created subdepartments to initiate a more collaborative environment where everyone can belong. By introducing the Visit Maldives Club, I aimed to nurture teamwork, and it has been rewarding to see employees, from line workers to managerial staff, come together and enjoy their work more each day.
Hotel Insider: As CEO & MD of MMPRC, how do you plan to collaborate with local communities and stakeholders to ensure sustainable tourism practices align with cultural preservation efforts in the Maldives?
Ibrahim Shiuree: First and foremost, I am new to this—specifically, new to working on a corporate scale in tourism. Initially, I accepted that I needed to learn a lot and that there would be friction between different parties, grievances, and criticism. I accepted these challenges as part of the process.
When I joined, I told my team that we should be strong enough to face these criticisms. We need to reach out to stakeholders and listen to them. I proposed conducting a survey to understand what we are doing right, what we are doing wrong, and gather suggestions and grievances. We reached out to all stakeholders and councils, and I told my team that for 4-5 weeks, we wouldn’t be taking any action; instead, we would listen. We met with all the NGOs, MATI, MATATO, Boating Association, liveaboards, Destination Future, airlines, and ambassadors.
We are on a mission to reach a target of 5 million visitors within 4.5 years. It’s a very ambitious goal compared to the 1-2 million target we have achieved so far. The experts have given us valuable data, and I believe it’s a doable thing. We should work hard to achieve our targets, especially since the government has raised the bar. Although it’s an ambitious target, I believe we can reach it. This goal will create more motivation and drive us to think outside the box.
Recently, I met with the mayor to discuss five different projects. In countries like Dubai, you can see impressive monuments and selfie-worthy places. Here, we have the same attractions as ten years ago. We need something creative—monuments or places that embody the essence of the Maldives, where tourists will come to visit and photograph. We have planned a competition in collaboration with the city council. Additionally, we are looking to establish experience centers where guests can have immersive experiences in Maldivian cultural work.
We have five teams working on these separate initiatives. One team will focus on the monuments, and another will work on getting Maldives into the record books. When I was studying in Malaysia, we broke the record of fitting 21 people inside a mini cooper, previously held by another university with 19 people. I was the first to get in and the last to get out. There are simple records like that, and I want to spread this concept to the youth, councils, and resorts where tourists can also engage by introducing Maldives Record Book.
In addition, we will have an annual publication and partner with PSM for record-
breaking events. We are also exploring creative new ventures like culinary events and wellness awareness, which is a new segment for guesthouses. Glamping is another initiative we will push. For the past 50 years, the sun, sand, and sea have been our main attractions. However, other countries are coming up with innovative new ideas to frequently promote their destinations and we need to do the same.
We will achieve more growth if we can develop more creative strategies. For example, when we first introduced the underwater restaurant, it immediately became the talk of the town. We need to continue coming up with newsworthy attractions and plan for the future. We should implement new ideas every two years or so to keep the buzz alive. Sunnyside talks is another essential concept we are working on. We need a creative team inside as well and we will establish an in-house studio to drive these initiatives.
Hotel Insider: How has your experience in sports influenced your approach to leadership and strategic planning in your current position towards sports tourism?
Ibrahim Shiuree: I am very proud to say that we have achieved something unprecedented in the past five years, particularly in terms of medals. When I played, the focus was primarily on participation and earning points. However, this has changed significantly. In 2019, when the Maldives TT team won its first gold medal, I was fortunate enough to be the coach. Following that, we won three gold medals at the IOIG and then five more. Our progress has exceeded expectations, and now our player is competing in the Olympic Games. I am proud to be part of this history. We no longer only talk about participation; we talk about medals, podium finishes, and more. In the last IOIG, table tennis led the medal tally board, ranking number one. Achieving this was not easy, but it was a very proud moment to see the Maldives at the top. With my sports background, I can easily envision the Maldives excelling in sports tourism. Events like the Tour de France and Formula 1 attract people from all over the world, filling beds and restaurants, and benefiting many sectors indirectly. We will introduce sports tourism that aligns well with the Maldives, such as a Spartan Run, an Aquathlon in Huvadhoo Atoll or other atolls where participants can run or walk in the water, jet ski competitions, fishing races,
and more. There are many possibilities, but we need support from the government. For example, easing the waiver on taxes for equipment is essential; otherwise, it won’t be feasible. Policy changes are necessary to achieve these targets.
We plan to bring together larger stakeholders on one platform by holding a symposium at the end of August or in September. This symposium will be structured to address the many obstacles we face in decision-making and policy-making.
Hotel Insider: With your involvement in initiatives like the MEERY Project, how do you align youth development efforts with MMPRC's goals?
Ibrahim Shiuree: The MEERY Project, a World Bank initiative, focuses on youth development with sustainability as a key driver. This project has provided valuable insights into effective sustainability practices, which are essential for MMPRC's goals. By understanding these practices, we can better integrate sustainability into our tourism strategies. For example, while resorts are already implementing sustainability practices, we need to extend these efforts to guesthouses and liveaboards. Incorporating feedback from initiatives like MEERY will help us promote sustainable practices across all sectors, aligning our broader objectives with effective youth development and ecological responsibility.
Hotel Insider: Sustainable tourism is a global priority for destinations. What strategic plans will be implemented at MMPRC to further advance sustainable tourism in the Maldives?
Ibrahim Shiuree: We collaborate with NGOs such as the Whale Shark Research Program, Olive Ridley, and the Manta Trust. These ongoing partnerships help promote sustainable tourism. In the future, we plan to work with other NGOs like Save the Beach and Parley. Our goal is to collaborate with all NGOs that support sustainable tourism to maximize our impact.
In addition, we recognize the recent growth in guesthouses and the importance of inclusivity. For instance, the surge in demand for accessible facilities at Crossroads after Marlou Van Rhijn's visit there following the invitation to the Maldives Sports Award highlights the importance of ensuring that all tourist facilities are inclusive by design. By integrating these practices and working closely with our NGO partners, we aim to advance our sustainability goals and ensure
that they address a broad spectrum of environmental and social concerns.
Hotel Insider: With your background in marketing and public relations, how do you plan to enhance MMPRC's strategic marketing initiatives to promote the Maldives as a leading tourist destination?
Ibrahim Shiuree: As I mentioned, the primary USP has traditionally been sun, sand, and sea. However, we must actively implement new strategies and promote diverse types of tourism. These include educational tourism, sports tourism, medical tourism, wellness tourism, gastronomic tourism, and a promising new area: film tourism. While we have hosted some film shoots in the past, they were mostly oneoff events. We have the natural beauty to support film tourism on a larger scale. We plan to collaborate with universities during the off-season to conduct summer camps and attract students during their summer holidays. We could also set up research and marine labs, where students can participate in projects for three months in collaboration with the fishing ministry. By believing in these possibilities, we can effectively transform our strategies.
Our stronghold remains our nature (sun, sand, sea), but we can integrate other aspects to diversify and increase visitor numbers. This includes tapping into untapped markets and exploring new initiatives. There are many innovative projects we hope to implement with our team, and I am excited about the future possibilities.
Hotel Insider: Reflecting on your career, what leadership lesson has had a significant impact on you and how do you apply it to your current role in MMPRC?
Ibrahim Shiuree: When I travel abroad with sports teams or during sports selections, I strive to make the process as fair as possible. Fairness and transparency are values I deeply cherish and have consistently implemented in my past positions and continue to do so now.
I am a people person who appreciates what each individual can bring to the table. I aim to treat everyone with fairness and equality, engaging and empowering them to perform their best. Teamwork is essential, and gaining the trust of the people you work with is crucial for success.
Hotel Insider: Thank you Shiuree, it has been insightful.
Word from the top
Rochelle Kilgariff
For this edition of Hotel Insider, we have a chat with Rochelle Kilgariff, the General Manager of Ifuru Island Maldives, the recently opened 5-star luxury resort island in Raa Atoll, offering commercial skydiving for the first time in the Maldives.
With over 30 years in luxury resort management, Rochelle shares with us her experience of being a general manager, what she and her team aim to provide to guests who visit Ifuru Island, as well as what exactly goes into managing the successful pre-opening of a property.
Hotel Insider: You have extensive experience in the luxury hospitality sector, working with many different properties. What drew you to this industry in the first place?
Rochelle: It's difficult to pinpoint just one reason. My journey in this industry has been shaped by a combination of factors. The joy of helping people and the influence of inspirational personalities I've met along the way have played significant roles in the joy of the job as well. I truly love my job and the personal connections that it has helped me to forge with so many people. Factoring in some hard work and passion – it has made this career incredibly rewarding.
Hotel Insider: Ifuru Island Maldives is a truly secluded, getaway resort with over 147 villas and various special restaurants and amenities. How do you make sure that your guests can have a truly luxurious experience unique to them?
Rochelle: At Ifuru Island Maldives, we believe that luxury is about personalisation and the connection with our guests. To that end, we have empowered every employee to be a Star and that’s why we are called the Ifuru All Stars.
I have had the opportunity and pleasure to travel extensively to 95 countries and my most cherished experiences have nothing to do with 5-star establishments; it’s been about the connection and service provided by people in those roles. Our team understands this and it’s part of our four pillars and our core values. We also continuously innovate and introduce new amenities and services to keep the guest experience fresh and unique.
Hotel Insider: Ifuru is the first resort in the country to introduce commercial skydiving to both tourists and locals. What
“At Ifuru Island Maldives, we believe that luxury is about personalisation and the connection with our guests.”
has the guest response been like to that? Would you say this has helped to attract a new market of visitors to the country?
Rochelle: Our skydiving offering has been overwhelmingly fun and highly positive. Guests are thrilled by the unique opportunity to experience the Maldives from such an exhilarating perspective. We have had jumpers from 7 to 77 years old who have said that it’s the best experience they’ve ever had and expressed interest in doing it again. We have also had five world champion skydivers quote that it is the best skydive location in the world.
It has indeed attracted a new segment of adventure-seeking travelers who might not have considered the Maldives as their destination before. This initiative has not only enhanced our guests' experience but also positioned Ifuru Island as a trailblazer in innovative luxury offerings.
Hotel Insider: You’ve been a general manager at quite a few properties. How do you ensure that you always stay at the top of your game when moving from one property to another?
Rochelle: The pure passion and enjoyment of building teams and products. Each property has its own set of challenges and opportunities, and I make it a point to immerse myself in the local culture and the unique aspects of each location. Additionally, I prioritise building a strong, motivated team and fostering an environment where creativity and innovation are encouraged. Staying attuned to industry trends and maintaining a network of industry peers also helps me stay informed and inspired; social media has us connected 24/7!
However, I’m also a strong believer in work-life balance and taking time out between passion projects is essential so when you start you can bring that extra magic to create a new island and resort energy.
Hotel Insider: You specialise in preopening management, and you were actively involved in the pre-opening of two resorts here in the Maldives as well. In your opinion, what elements need to be present for a luxury resort to be successful?
Rochelle: Successful pre-opening management hinges on meticulous planning and execution. Key elements include a clear vision of the guest experience, thorough market research, and a well-defined brand identity. It’s essential to assemble a passionate and skilled team early on, as they will set the tone for the resort's operations. Attention to detail in design and amenities, effective marketing strategies, and robust operational systems are also critical. Most importantly, creating a culture of service excellence and fun from day one ensures that the resort delivers on its promises of luxury and uniqueness. We aim to be happy people who are taking care of happy people and our passion is to make them even happier. It’s a truly virtuous circle.
Hotel Insider: It was lovely speaking with you, Rochelle. Thank you so much for you time.

Maldives Mid-Year Tourism Highlights
The Maldives has made remarkable strides in tourism since its early days, tracing back to the humble beginnings of the then Kurumba Village in 1972. Lack of infrastructure and accessibility was received by skepticism as to how tourism could possibly flourish in a remote destination with 99% ocean. However, with persistent effort from the pioneers of tourism in the Maldives, the tides turned in the nation's favor, and the country continues to thrive as a premier holiday destination setting a global benchmark for tropical destinations.
Growth Span
The Maldives tourism industry has exhibited exceptional growth in the first half of 2024, reaffirming its allure for travelers around the world. The market size for the Maldives Hospitality sector is anticipated to hit USD 609.17 million by the end of 2024, with a further projected CAGR of 9.15%, aiming for USD 943.94 million by 2029. This is a tall achievement for post-pandemic numbers that is continuing an upward trajectory as detailed in a Mordor Intelligence market analysis report.
Increasing Visitor Numbers
International visitor numbers in the Maldives have been on a continuous upward trend since 2010. In 2023, over 1.6 million tourists visited the country, a 13.9% yearon-year growth rate. As of July 2024, China leads as a major source of tourists, making up 12.5% of arrivals, with a strong preference for both luxury and mid-range resorts utilizing their time on preferred
excursions. Russian visitors, at 10.5%, also favor high-end accommodations and exclusive experiences. The United Kingdom contributes 9.0% of arrivals, with a mix of luxury and family-friendly interests. British tourists are known for their longer stays, often combining relaxation with active pursuits. Italian travelers, accounting for 7.6%, prefer boutique hotels and are interested in the Maldives' culinary and oceanic experiences. German tourists, representing 7.5%, focus on eco-friendly accommodations and sustainable tourism. India, the top market in 2023, makes up 6.2% of the total, with a demand for authentic experiences and family-oriented escapes.
International Meets Local
The Maldives’ hospitality industry features a blend of global hotel brands that have established a foothold in the country, alongside leading local chains like Crown and Champa Resorts, Universal Enterprise Resorts, Villa Resorts and independently managed resorts. Major international hotel

chains such as Marriott International, Hilton Worldwide, InterContinental Hotels Group, AccorHotels, and Hyatt Hotels Corporation have built a strong presence, capitalizing on the unique 'One Island, One Resort' model that defines the Maldivian hospitality landscape. This model has proven to make the Maldives one of the most profitable markets in Asia, attracting substantial investment and interest from global hospitality giants. Forecasts for the next three years were depicted this year which include new luxury resort openings, with Starwood’s Baccarat, Rosewood Hotels and Resorts, and Capella among those expected to diversify the luxury addresses in the Maldives.
Economic Stance
The hospitality industry in the Maldives has prospered thanks to government policies that have made it a fundamental part of the nation's economic growth. Tourism, accounting for nearly a quarter of the GDP, remains the largest sector, emphasizing the importance of a dynamic hospitality industry. The government's encouragement has led to the planned addition of almost 2,000 new rooms/keys through the development of new resorts and guesthouses that will attract different markets with different needs. The guesthouse segment plays a significant role in the industry's growth, offering budgetconscious travelers an economical lodging option whilst the luxury segment attracts high-paying clientele seeking exclusivity.
Sustainable Tourism
A key focus for the Maldives in 2024 has been sustainable tourism. The Ministry of Tourism of the Maldives, in collaboration with USAID and the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, launched the Ecotourism Framework and Roadmap on February 19, 2024. This initiative aims to promote environmentally friendly tourism by identifying unique sites, establishing eco-standards, and offering diverse, sustainable tourism options. With growing global awareness of the environmental impacts of tourism, the framework focuses on responsible nature-based travel that minimizes negative effects on the environment and enhances conservation efforts. The project includes mapping eco-sites, setting guidelines, implementing eco-friendly practices, and developing marketing materials to showcase the Maldives' commitment to sustainable tourism.
Improving Connectivity
Improving connectivity with the increased supply remains another priority to sustain the growth in tourist arrivals. A comprehensive airport development plan was decreed to cultivate public benefit and economic growth in the Maldives. The initiative includes new airports on 12 islands, expansions at existing airports, and the addition of international airports in Villingili and Thinadhoo City. Projects also involve developing a second airport in Laamu Atoll and enhancing current facilities like Gan International Airport and Kulhudhuffushi. Coastal tourism projects are additionally planned for Gan, Laamu Atoll, and Addu City. These initiatives are designed primarily to boost tourism by enhancing accessibility, expanding infrastructure to accommodate more visitors and creating more jobs.
Global Outreach
By
global outreach with digital marketing and online campaigns to promote the Maldives as a premier tourist destination. These efforts include collaborations with global travel influencers, targeted advertising on social media platforms, and engaging content showcasing the Maldives' unique attractions. The goal has been to maintain a strong online presence in a tech savvy world, reaching potential tourists worldwide and driving visitor numbers. Attending international fairs and collaborations with various organizations has been another strategic move by the MMPRC. Partnerships with international travel and tourism bodies, environmental organizations, and local communities are aimed at enhancing the overall tourist experience. These collaborations ensure that the Maldives remains a top choice for travelers seeking both luxury and sustainability.
Trending
Looking at traveler trends for the first half of the year, visitors to the Maldives are increasingly seeking eco-friendly resorts and experiences that prioritize environmental preservation and wellness. With surf tourism on the rise thanks to the top-notch surf breaks like Cokes and the demand for immersive local experiences, travelers have continued to show a preference for authentic cultural interactions and community-based tourism with sustainability as a key reputation driver. Oceanic or tropical views, the gentle sound of the waves lapping, and signature calming scents combine to create the perfect recipe for a rejuvenating spa experience in the Maldives. Bespoke and immersive wellness experiences are essential for most travelers with the Maldives on their bucket list. Creative wellness packages are curated for the purpose from salt immersion therapies to sound healing journeys that are designed to treat the body, mind and soul.
With remote work on the rise and digital nomadism gaining popularity among the working class with their 'wake up in a different location every month' lifestyle,
"International visitor numbers in the Maldives have been on a continuous upward trend, with over 1.6 million tourists in 2023, marking a 13.9% growth."
the Maldives is a perfect location for this tribe. Workation advertising by resorts and guesthouses is increasing, highlighting amenities such as high-speed internet, serene workspaces, and the unique opportunity to balance productivity with the relaxation and beauty of the Maldivian environment.
Future Potential
In the first half of 2024, the Maldives has experienced impressive growth in its tourism sector, thanks to strategic investments and a focus on sustainability. The future will see continued efforts to improve visitor experiences and promote economic growth through tourism. Yet, ongoing economic and geopolitical issues, including inflation, high interest rates, and trade disruptions, could potentially affect transport and accommodation costs. However, the tiny island nation stands as a prime example of how to blend natural beauty with progressive tourism strategies, rebounding swiftly postpandemic and providing a blueprint for other remote destinations worldwide.
Aishath Reena Working Women
Jill of all trades & master of some.
Aishath Reena, Reentha to those who know her well, was a go-getter from the start. From beginning her hospitality career at Bandos Island Resort in 1994 to being the Executive Secretary of the GM of Conrad Maldives Rangali Island now, Reena has approached every role with enthusiasm, confidence and the passion to learn more.
As a child, Reena decided she would not be confined to traditional norms and knew she was destined for more. Her grandmother, who was her guardian, allowed her to be independent and encouraged her to pursue her dreams. And her dream was to be independent, to learn and to be part of something bigger.
Hotel Insider: What steered you towards a career in hospitality?
Reena: I wanted to be in a position where I could challenge myself and joining the hospitality industry at a time when there was such a limited number of female employees working at resorts, seemed like the ideal career path. I wanted to break the mold and normalize female presence in the Maldivian hospitality industry.
Hotel Insider: What was your initial experience in the industry like?
Reena: I joined Bandos Island Resort in 1994 and was fortunate enough to be surrounded by good management and mentors who allowed me to learn and grow despite my lack of knowledge in the field. I adapted easily owing to the nurturing environment I was in.
Hotel Insider: What does being the Executive Secretary to the GM entail at Conrad?
Reena: Everything! (laughs) My workload rotates around everyone and a lot of it is administrative as well. It’s not just the GM’s work that I handle. I work alongside the senior management too. And I am also on the crisis management team, which means I'm on call 24/7.
Hotel Insider: How do you handle the demands associated with being such a key component in the structure of the resort?
Reena: I think I have a firm grip on all my
responsibilities. The fact that I enjoy challenges and do not like saying no to any task, within reason of course, makes me the ideal person to handle a role like this. And the fact that my husband is completely supportive and takes on the multitudes of responsibilities associated with taking care of our child, allows me to dedicate the bulk of my energy to my job.
Hotel Insider: What is your favorite part of what you do?
Reena: I feel really good when I am able to help people. At our operation, I am known as the Fixer. The one who always has a solution ready. I enjoy being able to provide that for my fellow employees.
Hotel Insider: You received the award of Manager of the Year at Conrad in 2020. How did you feel when you were awarded the accolade?
Reena: I received the award in 2020, after the world was ravaged by the pandemic and all that meant for our operation. I was on site and in the thick of all that happened to keep the resort maintained. To be honest I did not expect it and felt extremely grateful to be rewarded for my contribution during that challenging time.
Hotel Insider: What is the most significant obstacle you have faced in the industry so far?
Reena: Definitely the pandemic. A skeleton crew of employees remained on site to run the resort when it was in lockdown. The day began at 3 am and ended around midnight because we were doing everything ourselves to maintain the resort. Cleaning, gardening, sweeping, loading … you name it. Nobody knew what was happening and we were all in the dark when it came to the future. Policies were made overnight and thankfully
we all worked together to establish protocols and got the resort up and running again. It was exhausting and we had all burned out from both the effort and the fear that was prevalent at the time. I’m grateful that my family was with me onsite then. It helped immensely.
Hotel Insider: Do you believe that the value of women is underestimated in the Maldivian hospitality industry? What do you wish the experience would be for young women who wish to pursue a career in your field?
Reena: I have not personally encountered such bias at places that I have worked at. In contrast, at Hilton in particular, the management prioritizes giving opportunities to female employees and empowers us. I have heard of negative experiences but I am fortunate to not have experienced it myself. My hope is that those operations adopt the same methods that I have experienced here and provide that space and opportunity for young women entering the field. And I hope their parents support them.
Hotel Insider: Over your long career in the hospitality industry, what is the most significant change you have noticed in your field over the years?
Reena: A larger female presence in a male dominated industry. And I hope more opportunities with supportive management and safe, nurturing environments open up for women.
Hotel Insider: Who would you like to thank for being your support system?
Reena: My husband. He is my rock and handles the bulk of responsibility that comes with taking care of our daughter. I wouldn't be able to do this if not for him.
Live Fire Training by Global Fire Services (GFS)
Live fire or compartment firefighting training is an integral part of the mandatory 10-day industrial fire brigade training established by the Ministry of Tourism. Global Fire Services (GFS) holds the necessary permits to conduct the entire 10-day program. Consequently, GFS can deliver nine days of training on the island, with the compartment firefighting or live fire exercises conducted at their MNDF-approved facility. In this Back of the Haus installment, we explore the live fire training in action. This training is invaluable in teaching firefighters to remain calm, think clearly, and respond efficiently during high-stress emergencies.

Sirru Fen Fushi celebrates World Environment Day with the students of Munavvara School
In honor of this year’s World Environment Day, Sirru Fen Fushi Private Lagoon Resort collaborated with Munavvara School of Maroshi to promote environmental awareness and sustainability.
Under the theme “50 Students – 50 Trees“, the resort’s sustainability team engaged students from grades 6 to 9 in an educational hands on tree planting initiative. The event highlighted critical environmental issues such as the fragility of the Maldivian ecosystem, the impact of ocean plastics, the importance of recycling, and the aspects for turtle conservation, with the support of the dedicated Olive
Ridley Project.
Sirru Fen Fushi’s team conducted an educational session on the technical aspects of plastics recycling by presenting step-by-step guidance from the resort’s Sustainability Lab. At the lab, used plastic waste items are cleaned, shredded and molded into new and useful objects such as chairs, tables and clipboards, and turtle shaped souvenirs and bracelets. To further support the reduction of single-use plastics, the resort’s team provided each student with a foldable, reusable water bottle.
The donated trees were
planted by the students in their schoolyard while learning about the process of tree planting and propagation. The tree planting initiative was inspired by the Maldives’ oldest tree of 490 years, which is located in the heart of the island.
