Sarah Mathews is a globally experienced leader amongst women in technology, empowering clients towards datadriven campaigns, insights, and digital platforms to develop impactful traveler-centered campaigns that align with the right audience, through the right strategies.
An experienced international keynote speaker and travel trend spotter, Sarah offered her perspectives on the future of travel in an increasingly data-driven world.
Hotel Insider: Your presentations at the Maldives first ever data forum was very visionary; It was ‘something fabulous’ as your linkedin bio says! How has your career in marketing, sales, and digital platforms influenced your ability to make strategic, data-driven decisions? What key experiences sharpened this skill?
Sarah: I think I have always utilised data, but I didn’t think of it in the way we now conceptualise utilising data. My time, particularly during my 12 years at Tripadvisor, really shaped my perspective. There, data played a crucial role in planning marketing strategies more effectively. Now, more than ever, especially with AI coming into play and the abundance of data available, it’s become essential to understand the type of data we’re working with.
It is vital to develop the right questions, not just because it honed my passion, but because it is critical to understand what you want to learn and achieve. Tripadvisor’s plethora of audience data has fueled that passion, enabling a deeper understanding of personalised travel beyond just experiences. This ties beautifully into personalisation. Travellers want personalised travel— experiences tailored to their needs, motivations and desires. Data and AI bridge that gap effectively and efficiently. It’s all about leveraging insights to create meaningful connections.
Hotel Insider: In a tech savvy world, how do you navigate the balance between
collecting copious amounts of data and ensuring it’s efficiently turned into actionable insights, without getting bogged down by analysis paralysis?
Sarah: It’s a balance, of course. I think it comes down to asking the right questions. What is it that you truly want to know? There’s a vast amount of data out there, but do you really need to know everything? Is that information actually going to help you make a decision? It’s about turning it into an actionable task.
Too often, we see businesses and organisations fall into analysis paralysis, especially if they love data. But I think it’s all about asking the right questions: What is your objective? How are you going to achieve it? And what are the end results that will make a significant difference to your strategic planning? I believe those are the steps to finding that balance.
It’s about defining the questions; whether it's around arrival numbers, key metrics, or platforms like Airbnb, to address challenges like combating over-tourism. If you only focus on the volume game, you risk losing sight of the bigger picture. It’s not just about metrics; it’s about understanding the impact on the economy and using that insight to drive meaningful change.
An example is if your objective as a destination is to manage dispersal of travellers to lesser known parts you can craft specific questions that can help you create a roadmap to a solution.
Hotel Insider: As someone who emphasises the importance of asking the right questions to drive KPIs, what key metrics do you prioritise when evaluating the success of a travel or destination
campaign?
Sarah: I think, a lot of the time, I would even reflect on this before diving into the why of campaigns and actually examine the overall metric that a destination is measuring. I’m a huge advocate for measuring economic footprint as opposed to arrival numbers. Many destinations talk about sustainability and over-tourism, yet you can’t, on the other hand, aim for greater volume without considering the impact on the destination.
I believe the economy is a much better way to measure success. The duration of stay is also a great metric, especially if you’re trying to drive economic impact. When it comes to the campaign itself, it’s about understanding the objective of the campaign. Are you trying to create greater awareness, or are you trying to drive conversions? It’s difficult to achieve both at the same time because their tasks and messaging are vastly different.
Hotel Insider: Your previous roles at Tripadvisor spanned over a decade. How has this experience helped you overcome barriers to adopting new technologies, such as payment gateways, that could improve traveller experiences?
Sarah: I was very fortunate to join Tripadvisor back in 2012. My time there was amazing; I learnt so much. While we were a large organisation, Tripadvisor was still functioning like a young company, always looking to break barriers and find innovative solutions for the travel community. They consistently focused on their travel community, which meant we were always seeking ways to engage with them and listen to their needs.
This approach required us to be agile and flexible. It’s evident not only in the travel sector but across all industries that businesses which remain agile and adaptable are the ones that thrive and stay relevant to consumers.
In travel, particularly, the way we plan, behave, and experience travel has evolved significantly. Elements like payment gateways and seamless travel experiences have become essential. It’s critical for travel businesses to identify the right solutions to connect with their consumers and provide exceptional travel experiences.
Hotel Insider: Given your belief that corporations will increasingly hire freelancers, how do you foresee this shift impacting the travel sector, particularly in terms of digital marketing and destination development?
Sarah: I don’t necessarily think it’s going to impact the travel, hospitality, and service sectors significantly because, ultimately, we will always need that human connection, it’s never going to disappear.
What I do see, however, is the gig economy enabling businesses to tap into experts from around the world for specific projects they are focused on. For instance, if you need to create content for a specific audience. You can tap into creators that have that localised knowledge. Most importantly there is a growing trend of people wanting a gig lifestyle and clearly there is demand.
It’s about leveraging a global community of experts, and I believe this trend will continue
"It’s not about knowing everything; it’s about asking the right questions and turning data into actionable insights that align objectives, drive results, and create meaningful connections with your audience."
to grow over time.
Hotel Insider: When working with influencers to drive engagement for campaigns, how do you identify the right partners who align with both short-term KPIs and long-term audience growth goals?
Sarah: I think influencers have come a long way. In my early days, I wasn’t a fan, partly because, at the time, it wasn’t really a business. Now that it is, great influencers understand that they need to provide key metrics and deliverables; it’s a business for them.
As a destination, it’s therefore important to ask those business-oriented questions: examining engagement rates, analysing audience profiles, and recognising that it’s not always about choosing the most popular influencer. Instead, it’s about finding the influencer who can best drive your brand, business, or destination forward.
You can work with mega influencers or celebrities, which can provide a significant short-term boost, with many more people
looking at your content. But the key question is: will it lead to deeper engagement further down the funnel and potentially drive conversions? That might not always be the case.
Part of the process is identifying the type of influencer who can achieve those goals. It’s about striking a balance between different types of content creators and influencers, understanding how they engage with their audiences, and, as I mentioned earlier, clearly defining the KPIs you need them to deliver for you.
Hotel Insider: As inter-regional travel and emerging markets present corridors of opportunity, what data trends have you observed that indicate key growth areas or untapped markets for destinations like the Maldives?
Sarah: I think during the Data Forum in the Maldives, there were so many incredible insights shared by the excellent speakers we had. Looking at macro trends is absolutely critical as it provides insights into where new opportunities and travel corridors are emerging. You need to consider factors like population and economic growth.
For example, India has been a significant market for the Maldives for many years, as has China. However, analysing macro data reveals other opportunities, such as Indonesia—a country with a massive population and a growing middle class with disposable income. For the Maldives, it’s a market that’s relatively easy to tap into and could bring a substantial influx of Indonesian travellers.
Similarly, the Vietnamese market offers potential. Although smaller, it has a strong passion for outbound travel.
It’s vital to keep an eye on the data, especially with geopolitical shifts, as these trends can affect arrival figures, as we saw recently with India and the Maldives. Being able to adapt quickly, shift your marketing message to target another market, and attract a new audience is essential.
Additionally, there’s the question of whether you should focus on targeting specific markets or aim for users based on intent. Should you concentrate on market-specific strategies, or should you prioritise the type of traveller you want to attract to the Maldives? These are the kinds of decisions that data can help inform.
Hotel Insider: Thank you Sarah, this has been a valuable conversation.
As told through UNDP’s 45+ years of trusted partnership for the Maldives
The UN’s ‘official’ arrival on the shores of Maldives was marked in March 1978 by the opening of the very first UNDP Office in the capital city Malé. At the time, the island nation was one of the poorest and most vulnerable countries in the world. Frequent daily challenges across the archipelago included access to safe drinking water and proper nutrition, which were all compounded by the islands’ natural state of isolation.
Health and sanitation were serious problems, especially in Malé, amid a devastating Cholera Epidemic that affected one in 12 people. One of the first things UNDP did was to bring in a motorboat named ‘Sul-ha’ (meaning peace in the local Dhivehi language). This vessel played a vital role in reaching remote communities across the atolls, where the scarcity of essential resources like water and limited access to education were obstacles that made the present challenges even more daunting.
Spurring a Revolution
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the
dominant export of the Maldives was dried, smoked and salted fish. In 1971, when the country was hit with a short-lived ‘Fish Crisis’, improving and expanding the trade through mechanisation proved necessary.
By 1973, UNDP had launched a project to purchase motorboats and train fishermen, resulting in the arrival of the first marine diesel engines and sparking a revolution for the centuries-old fishing communities. The first traditional fishing boat built to carry such an engine was famously dubbed ‘Ummeedhu’ (loosely translating to ‘hope’ in Dhivehi) - an apt name for a vessel that would usher in an unprecedented era of prosperity for local fishermen.
Fifty years later, UNDP continues to invest in the evolution of transport across the dispersed island nation. In 2024, UNDP supports the introduction of greener, sustainable options, including electric minibuses for public use in the Greater Malé Region, solar charging stations for island communities, and the first electric vehicles added to WAMCO’s waste management fleet. Additionally, UNDP is backing the launch of a first-of-its-kind 'Agriboat' with solar-powered cold storage units that can swiftly deliver produce, minimizing
post-harvest losses as well as reducing fuel consumption, costs, and carbon emissions.
Maldives’ greatest resource has always been its people - progressive, dynamic, and resilient. In 1980, with assistance from UNDP and other partners, the country began efforts to develop and standardize its schooling system. Three years later, for the first time, primary schools unified under a single, welldeveloped curriculum were established across the country. From then on, the nation has continued on an uphill trajectory rooted in lasting, knowledge-based empowerment.
A UNDP Situation Report was published in 1966, analysing the various bottlenecks to developing tourism in the Maldives. One of the key recommendations made by the expert team was that continued investment in the country’s infrastructure including airports, banking system and related capacity would pave the way for a thriving tourism industry. This advice was well-received by local industry
pioneers, and their determination for success has since transformed the nation.
In the late 1970s, to meet the demands of growing tourist arrivals, UNDP provided support to the Government in its efforts to upgrade the country’s main airport on Hulhulé Island, which was later inaugurated in 1981.
For years, with UNDP’s assistance, great efforts were made to collect census data from across the archipelago and have it sent abroad for processing, all at an enormous cost. Given how expensive and unsustainable the entire endeavour was, UNDP moved to equip the nation with the necessary technology and expertise.
In August 1983, as part of the Maldives' journey toward digitalization, the country set up its very first computer. UNDP trained a team of three notable individuals who later trained others, becoming pioneers of the local ICT industry.
UNDP’s flagship programme in poverty
reduction provided training in project design and management to local CBOs, including youth and women groups. It introduced concepts like decentralized governance and bottom-up planning, which helped the communities most in need, to flourish.
These movements were boosted by UNDP’s continued assistance in the provision of essential supplies such as introducing integrated water supply systems, decentralizing dry season water supplies and emergency water distribution, as well as making improvements to groundwater quality. In 2017, a project was initiated to deliver a safe and secure uninterrupted water supply to 49 islands, serving 105, 000 people affected by climate change.
From its dawn, UNDP has been a major partner supporting Maldives’ vision for democratic reform. In July 2004, the Government put forward a democratic reform agenda and convened a constitutional assembly known as the Special Majlis to prepare a democratic constitution. Early on, UNDP brought in a constitutional expert to
help support this historic process.
The ratification of Constitution of Maldives in August 2008 guaranteed separation of powers, multi-party elections, decentralized governance as well as a comprehensive bill of citizen rights and freedoms. This was followed by the establishment of independent bodies such as the Supreme Court, Elections Commission, Anti-Corruption Commission and the Prosecutor General’s Office - for the very first time. Two months later, UNDP assisted the Elections Commission in holding a free and fair election that resulted in a peaceful and historic transition.
Capacity-building support has since been provided to several newly established independent bodies including the Civil Service Commission, Judicial Service Commission, the Supreme Court, the Parliament, the Prosecutor General’s Office and the AntiCorruption Commission in addition to a UN joint programme to support the Human Rights Commission.
UNDP has stood unwaveringly by the Maldives across some of its most challenging
times, providing crucial support and assistance. Following the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, the UNDP assisted in shelter rehabilitation efforts, repairing 2,767 homes and constructing 169 homes on 45 islands. Eco-friendly harbours were developed on eight islands to revive infrastructure. To help restore livelihoods, UNDP provided fishing gear, agriculture kits, cash grants, and micro-credit loans to various islands, benefiting thousands of families, and women in particular. Project funding and management were channelled through trained Island Development Committees and NGOs on 86 islands.
The 2008 global recession exacerbated the dire effects of Maldives’ domestic fiscal crisis and drove the country into negative growth for the second time in a decade. Tourist arrivals and revenue were low, and the country’s high dependency on tourism and imports posed worrying implications for food security. Across this period, UNDP worked actively with other stakeholders on the value chain development of fishery and agriculture within the tourism sector. In 2010, UNDP assisted the Government to develop the first-ever Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSME) Act, spurring new incentives, access to finance and business incubation support for MSMEs. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, UNDP played a pivotal role in bolstering the
Maldives' health response - going beyond mere support, actively procuring and supplying essential products, while also bringing in expertise in crisis management and addressing the most critical impacts of the pandemic. After assessing the economic effects on SMEs and the self-employed, strategies were designed to mitigate the rising unemployment, income loss, social strains, and inequalities. UNDP also backed assessments on the rapid economy, livelihoods, socio-economic impacts, climate change and water security, while assisting state interventions on gender-based violence and violence against women policies, justice services, survivor services, mental health, legal aid, and social cohesion, as well as low carbon transition and emergency water distribution.
UNDP has had a longstanding engagement to advance gender equality in the Maldives. Having supported the amendment of the Decentralization Act, UNDP went on to successfully advocate for the introduction of a 33 percent quota. Once the amended Act was adopted in December 2019, the number of women represented in the local councils as key community decision-makers increased significantly.
In March 2022, the Government endorsed
and launched the Gender Equality Action Plan (GEAP) formulated in partnership with UNDP, which is a ground-breaking integrated framework that has put in motion a shift in power and will continue to help facilitate the advancement of gender equality and the empowerment of women.
In June 2011, backed by UNDP support, Baa Atoll became the Maldives' first UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve; successfully demonstrating a community-led conservation model that could be replicated across all atolls. UNDP's commitment to the environment continues to grow stronger and more resolute. Fast forward to 2024, and Maldives proudly stands as the first Small Island Developing State (SIDS) nation to craft and endorse an Integrated National Financing Framework. This framework incorporates genderresponsive financing strategies focused on climate action, propelling Maldives' climate agenda forward. By reducing fossil fuel dependency, strengthening resilience, and directing investments towards sustainable and inclusive growth, Maldives is leading the charge towards a greener and more prosperous future.
Hotel Insider has a chat with Mohamed Mirsaad the CEO of Travel Connection Maldives which has reached top-tier status in the travel and hospitality landscape of the Maldives - a major feat from its humble beginnings.
TCM is known for being a premier portal to dreamy, luxurious holidays on the Maldives’ shell-speckled beaches, where travellers can unwind and connect with the richness of nature. Mirsaad provides insights into TCM’s success and its plans for future expansion, with the hope of reaching new heights and a stronger foothold in the industry.
Hotel Insider: Tell us about your career and the early beginnings of Travel Connection Maldives, leading to its growth into the giant it is today.
Mirsaad: I began my career in the travel industry at the age of 17, working alongside my brother as an airport representative. Our primary focus was assisting FIT (Fully Independent Traveler) clients who arrived in the Maldives without pre-booked accommodations. We would greet them at the airport and recommend resorts tailored to their specific needs and preferences. In 2008, I joined Kanuhura Maldives as an airport representative, a position I held
for nearly a decade. During this period, the idea of starting my own travel agency began to take shape. In 2013, I officially registered my agency, starting with a small team of just two staff members. Since then, we’ve steadily grown and expanded our operations. However, the journey has not been without its challenges—one of the significant hurdles we faced was securing competitive rates from certain resorts.
Hotel Insider: As the CEO of a reputable travel agency, what does a typical day at work look like for you?
Mirsaad: My day typically begins around 9:00 AM when I arrive at the office. I personally oversee most of the daily operations, ensuring everything is running smoothly. I also check and respond to emails to stay on top of ongoing tasks and communication. I make it a point to check in with my colleagues to discuss their work progress and address any concerns they might have. This helps me maintain a handson approach and ensures that everyone is

aligned with the day’s goals.
Hotel Insider: TCM has participated in travel fairs and expos across the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. What have you taken away from these experiences, and how have they influenced your current offers as a DMC?
Mirsaad: Travel fairs provide a unique opportunity to gather valuable insights into emerging trends, shifting customer preferences, and market demands from around the world. By attending these events, we stay informed about the latest developments in the travel industry and how different markets are evolving. Our primary objective in participating is to generate new business leads, establishing connections with potential clients and partners who are interested in our services.
Equally important, travel fairs allow us to meet with our existing partners faceto-face. These meetings are crucial in maintaining and strengthening relationships, as they help us reinforce trust, address any concerns, and explore new opportunities for collaboration. The personal interaction and networking potential at these fairs enable us to demonstrate our commitment to our partners while expanding our business reach.
In addition to networking, travel fairs also give us a platform to share fresh offers, our brand’s vision, and engage directly with decision-makers in the industry. This ensures that we remain competitive and adaptable to the ever-changing dynamics of the travel market.
Hotel Insider: You have offices outside of the Maldives, and TCM is definitely growing. Are there challenges to operating from different locations?
Mirsaad: Yes, it is definitely challenging, especially since we have different teams operating in those offices. Coordinating across multiple locations requires clear communication and efficient management to ensure that everyone stays aligned. Each team may have its own set of goals and challenges, so it’s important to nurture
synergy and maintain consistent standards across the board. We rely on regular updates and a strong support system to keep operations running smoothly despite the geographical differences.
Hotel Insider: What does TCM do differently to retain guests and ensure that each one has a personalized and memorable experience?
Mirsaad: We strive to respond promptly to our operators and provide them with personalized services. Our goal is to ensure that each operator receives personalized support that meets their specific needs. By offering quick replies and customized solutions, we aim to build strong relationships and maintain a high level of satisfaction. This approach helps us stay efficient while ensuring that our partners feel valued and well-supported throughout every interaction.
Hotel Insider: TCM has won various accolades and is trusted globally. How do you foresee the growth of TCM in the future?
Mirsaad: We are striving to reach the highest level of excellence possible. Our goal is to set ambitious standards and continuously improve our processes to achieve outstanding results. By focusing on innovation, quality, and dedication, we aim to surpass expectations and achieve excellence in every aspect of our work. This commitment ensures that we consistently deliver top-notch performance and maintain a competitive edge in an ever-evolving industry.

We have a chat with Ahmed Zahir, General Manager of Angsana Velavaru, who recently took up the mantle of heading the resort.
With over 30 years of experience at different levels in the tourism sector, Zahir is an industry veteran who has worked in some of the most prestigious resorts in the Maldives. He is also the first local general manager of a Banyan property in the Maldives. His dedicated expertise includes strategic planning, hotel management and staff development in the hospitality industry. Here, Zahir shares with us about the unique guest experience at Angsana Velavaru, his vision for the resort under his leadership as well as his take on the development trajectory of the Maldivian tourism industry in the coming years.
Hotel Insider: To start off, what drew you to this industry in the first place?
Zahir: After finishing school, many of my classmates entered the tourism industry, and I watched them enjoy a comfortable lifestyle, which drew me to it as well. The potential earnings, the chance to experience the outside world while living in the Maldives, and the learning opportunities are the key reasons why I decided to pursue a career in this industry.
Hotel Insider: Tell us about Angsana Velavaru. What sets the resort apart from other luxury properties in the Maldives?
Zahir: Angsana Velavaru is the only resort in the Maldives that features a resort within a resort, complete with its own infrastructure and fully self-sufficient set of water villas, which are known as InOcean Villas. These villas are located 1km away from the mainland and operate independently, without relying on the main island.
We also offer ‘101 Things to Do,’ a wide

range of activities designed for all types of guests, including couples, families, and solo travellers. Additionally, if I’m not mistaken, we are the only resort in the Maldives with a continuous sandy beach surrounding the entire island, free from any barriers. And, of course, our dedicated staff provides exceptional service to ensure an unforgettable experience for our guests.
Hotel Insider: As the general manager, what’s your vision for the resort? How do you ensure that daily operations remain efficient and in line with the set strategic objectives?
Zahir: My vision for the resort is to establish it as the top choice for guests by offering outstanding service, rooted in trust, respect, and integrity in every interaction with our guests, associates, and the community. We strive to continually exceed expectations, creating value for both our stakeholders and the environment.
I have implemented key performance indicators (KPIs) for all Heads of Departments (HODs) to monitor the success of our operations, focusing on guest satisfaction, employee performance, financial stability, and sustainability efforts. I ensure that our empowerment programme remains active and impactful throughout the hotel, and I prioritise a strong focus on customer experience, sustainable practices, innovation, and the development of our associates.
Hotel Insider: You’ve been in the hospitality industry for more than three decades, climbing through different ranks over the years. What’s your advice for upand-coming hospitality professionals in the Maldives?
Zahir: I’ve shared this in a previous interview as well: success is the result of hard work, dedication, and a steadfast commitment to your goals. While shortcuts may offer quick rewards, they don't provide the lasting
experience needed for long-term achievement. It’s important to embrace each opportunity for learning and personal growth on your path to leadership. This mindset not only increases your chances of sustained success but also builds confidence in your own abilities.
Hotel Insider: How do you see the Maldivian hospitality industry evolving in the coming years?
Zahir: The Maldivian hospitality industry is on track for steady growth and transformation in the coming years. However, this progress will face challenges as costs continue to rise, making it more expensive for customers due to various factors. To maintain our position in this competitive market, it is crucial that policymakers and industry stakeholders collaborate closely, ensuring that the destination remains attractive and competitive. This requires a focus on both global trends and local innovations. In today's digital age, social media serves as a megaphone for destinations, especially visual havens like the Maldives. There is an opportunity for Maldives to evolve their approach towards growth through data-driven social media strategies to remain competitive.
While the Maldives has traditionally been perceived as an exclusive destination for luxury travellers, there is an opportunity to diversify its appeal, attract new demographics, and reshape its digital presence. By drawing on insights from data analytics, the Maldives can strategically enhance its social media footprint and refine marketing approaches to engage broader audiences. The Maldives' first 2024 DATA Forum (Destination Advancement Through Analytics) explored how industry stakeholders can leverage data and intelligence, with speakers like Mimrah Mahmood, VP of Asia Pacific at Meltwater, spotlighting strategies on the power of listening and decoding consumer behaviour.
The Potential of Social Media in Maldives Tourism
For the Maldives, where breathtaking visuals come naturally, social media is a powerful,
yet underused, marketing tool. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok, where visual appeal reigns supreme, could serve as vital channels to enhance engagement, broaden brand appeal, and reach potential visitors who might not consider the Maldives otherwise. The Maldives has a strong opportunity to achieve the viral visibility seen in other destinations, especially in today’s highly visual, online-first world.
Comprehensive data analytics provides realtime insights on engagement and trending content, revealing how the Maldives can customise its approach to attract digitally active audiences. For instance, data shows that a significant number of potential visitors decide on a travel destination based on content they’ve seen online. Tourism boards and resorts that use such insights can tap into the potential to shape trends rather than follow them, creating content that is not only visually stunning but also deeply engaging
to capture the attention of travellers from all walks of life.
High-quality visuals stand out in the crowded digital space, and the Maldives can benefit significantly from producing professional, high-fidelity content. Unlike user-generated content, which has an important role in establishing authenticity, curated content allows the Maldives to deliver a brand image that aligns with its luxury reputation. From immersive drone footage capturing atolls dappled with sunlight and turquoise patches to cinematic videography that captures the unique experiences of liveaboard tours, high-fidelity content makes the Maldives look and feel more exclusive.
The return on investment (ROI) for high-fidelity content is substantially higher than for standard user-generated content,
generating up to six times more engagement. As Gen Z and millennial travellers drive demand for unique, shareable experiences, investing in this level of content positions the Maldives as a premium destination. For hoteliers, high-quality content enables them to present specific experiences, from private dinners on deserted islands to wellness retreats that attract travellers. By focusing on visual storytelling, the Maldives can reshape perceptions and draw visitors who appreciate understated luxury and exclusivity.
The Maldives is expanding its tourism reach to include medical tourism, liveaboard experiences, and affordable luxury travel. However, the current social media image of the Maldives that pops to mind of couples on their honeymoon, may inadvertently limit
its appeal to other demographics. Families, eco-conscious travellers, and wellness-seekers are all key groups that could add to the Maldives’ tourist numbers, especially given the destination's unique natural beauty and existing wellness infrastructure.
For instance, data shows that 22% of people are influenced to visit destinations based on images and stories they’ve seen on social media. Creating content that highlights family-friendly activities, promotes sustainable practices, and illustrates the Maldives’ growing wellness offerings can attract a broader demographic.
Data-driven insights from analytic providers offer the Maldives’ tourism stakeholders the ability to optimise marketing spend and ensure each dollar works effectively. Paid
analytics can track which social media posts, ads, and visuals yield the highest engagement, allowing for targeted, high-impact campaigns. For example, an ad campaign on TikTok showing liveaboard experiences may appeal to younger audiences, while Instagram stories highlighting serene, family-friendly resorts could resonate with a different demographic. By adapting campaigns based on platform insights, the Maldives can increase the likelihood of high-quality engagement and conversions.
Prescriptive intelligence from analytics adds another layer of sophistication to marketing efforts. Rather than simply reporting engagement numbers, prescriptive analytics suggest specific actions based on data trends. For instance, if family-friendly posts tend to get the most engagement during holiday seasons, tourism operators can adjust their content calendars accordingly. This allows resorts, travel agencies, and tourism boards
to create dynamic, responsive campaigns that adapt to real-time insights, maximising the value of each dollar spent on marketing.
Social media influencers in Asia, particularly in markets like Indonesia, are some of the most active and engaged content creators globally. Jakarta, for instance, generates staggering numbers from its content creator economy alone. While the Maldives has its own skilled content creators, strategic partnerships with high-impact influencers from neighbouring regions could significantly boost engagement and reach. These influencers not only bring their substantial followings but also produce high-quality, immersive content that could capture the Maldives’ unique charm.
Asian travellers are among the Maldives’ most active social media users, often generating substantial organic engagement. By collaborating with influential content creators and tracking their reach, tourism operators in the Maldives can boost visibility in key markets, enabling the Maldives to strategically position itself within the Asia-Pacific region’s
growing digital ecosystem.
As climate change awareness grows, an increasing number of travellers are seeking destinations that align with sustainable and eco-friendly values. While the Maldives has made strides in sustainability, social media content does not always reflect these initiatives. Engaging sustainability influencers and promoting the Maldives’ efforts to preserve its natural beauty can resonate with eco-conscious travellers, adding a new dimension to the brand.
Data shows that eco-conscious travellers are highly engaged online, particularly when it comes to destinations known for their environmental efforts. By working with sustainability advocates and featuring ecofriendly practices in high-fidelity content, the Maldives can strengthen its position as an environmentally responsible destination.
The Maldives stands at the intersection of luxury, digital marketing, and travel innovation. By adopting a strategic, data-
driven approach to social media, the Maldives can capitalise on its island nation charm, diversify its visitor demographics, and boost engagement across platforms. With data analytic insights, stakeholders can adapt to shifting trends, attract untapped audiences, and strengthen the Maldives’ position as a globally appealing, inclusive, and sustainable destination.
As the Maldives continues to redefine its tourism identity as a global brand, using social media to amplify its strengths will ensure it remains at the forefront of the travel industry, winning audiences and channelling a legacy of dynamic, accessible luxury for years to come. By promoting high-fidelity content, utilising AI for prescriptive insights, and demonstrating its sustainability initiatives, the Maldives can appeal to broader demographics, proving its stance in the digital-first world.
Afa Khaleel was born and bred in the capital city but spent most of her adult life working in the island resorts of Maldives. Barely out of her teens, Afa packed up her life in 2009 and moved to Gili Lankanfushi, which was then under the umbrella of Soneva Resorts, excited for what her future held.
Afa wanted to step outside of her comfort zone, meet new people, learn new things and have her adventures. Fortunately for her, her aunt was around to guide her in the transition and give her company in the new environment she would call home.
Afa thrived in the Reservations Department. She enjoyed the pace of the job, all the new faces she greeted and the diversity in those faces. She learned from her diverse team of colleagues and loved the many challenges that came with the job. Over the years, Afa has elevated through the ranks as a Reservations Agent at LUX Resorts and Jumeirah Group, and then as a Reservations Supervisor at both Vakkaru Maldives and S/O Maldives.
She is now the Assistant Reservations Manager at Zaha Travels, a tour operator in the Litus Group of Companies. Afa has a Diploma in Hotel Management, earned from the Asian International Hotel School in 2013. We, at Hotel Insider, sat down with Afa for a chat about her extensive career in the hospitality industry.
Hotel Insider: What was your initial experience in the industry like, away from your family in a strange new place, at such a young age?
Afa: I was curious about what the world had to offer and I was excited to meet people from different countries and walks of life. Yes, I missed my parents but because my aunt worked in the same resort, I never felt lonely. I was hungry for new experiences and I felt my mind expand with everything and everyone I came across.
Hotel Insider: You’ve worked in the reservations department of a number of resorts. Have you ever faced any challenges as a woman in your field? What do you wish would improve so that more women would be open to work in resorts?
Afa: I think I have been lucky. I have never experienced gender based discrimination because the resorts I worked at prioritised hiring and developing female employees in a safe environment.
As for what would allow women to prosper in resort based positions, more accommodating options would definitely help. Soneva allows spouses and toddlers to live with their senior
employees at the resort. Fiyavalhu Resort Maldives is based on the island of Mandhoo, which allows employees to go home to their families at the end of the day. Men sacrifice a lot being employed in resort based positions. Women, being childbearers and primary caregivers, cannot afford to do the same.
I made the switch back to the capital city for the same reason. If not, I would have been able to manage my professional life and family life without making sacrifices at the expense of either.
Hotel Insider: Throughout your long career working in reservations in the hospitality industry, what is the most significant change you have noticed over the years?
Afa: Maldives used to be a honeymoon or family destination where guests would enjoy solitude and family time in a laid back environment. Now, resorts, guesthouses and liveaboards have a variety of new activities to offer to their guests, which attracts friend groups, backpackers, thrill seekers and wellness enthusiasts. Water parks, sky diving, wellness retreats and other innovative activities have made Maldives an affordable getaway, as opposed to what was simply a luxury destination for a niche market.
Hotel Insider: What have you enjoyed the most in your professional career?
Afa: Everything. The resorts I was fortunate enough to work at prioritised the wellbeing of their staff. The facilities were amazing and I was paid well. I was breathing in fresh air, eating fresh food, and snorkeling on my off days. I met my best friends at those resorts and I have learned so much about the industry as a whole. I have enjoyed the whole journey.
Hotel Insider: Who would you like to thank for being your support system?
Afa: My husband, for being my mentor and my rock, who despite being in a position that requires him to work around the clock at a resort, makes time for me no matter what. My parents, who trusted me to live apart from them at such a young age, believed in me and supported me through everything. And my aunt, who introduced me to this industry and has always been there for me.
Mimrah Mahmood, or Mim, has consistently championed the power of data-driven insights. Rooted in the Maldives' tourism industry, Mim’s journey into tech leadership, now serving as the VP of Asia Pacific at Meltwater, reflects his commitment to driving impactful change. With a passion for AI, predictive analytics, and effective communication, he empowers businesses to redefine their narratives, adapt strategies, and thrive in a competitive, digital-first world.
Hotel Insider: You’ve had a fascinating career into the tech space. How did your journey into Meltwater begin?
Mimrah: My journey into Meltwater stemmed from a deep interest in understanding the transformative potential of technology in the corporate and public sectors. With Meltwater’s global footprint, I found an opportunity to merge my passion for datadriven insights with the chance to contribute to meaningful change across industries. Joining Meltwater was about leveraging technology to empower businesses to make smarter decisions, and it’s been an incredible journey of growth and innovation.
Hotel Insider: It’s inspiring to see Maldivians leading change at the top levels in terms of technology. With your early exposure to resorts, what aspects of the tourism industry fuel your passion for using Meltwater's data insights to drive smarter decisions?"
Mimrah: Growing up around the Maldivian
tourism sector, I witnessed firsthand how critical effective communication and reputation management are for success. This foundation instilled a desire to use data insights to craft narratives that resonate globally. With Meltwater’s capabilities, I aim to empower tourism brands to predict trends, understand their audiences, and tailor their strategies to enhance visibility and engagement in an increasingly competitive market.
Hotel Insider: With the rise of AI, how can brands develop more holistic and agile communication strategies that allow them to adapt swiftly and effectively?
Mimrah: Brands should embrace AI to glean actionable insights from vast data streams, enabling them to anticipate audience needs and sentiment in real time. By integrating predictive analytics with creative storytelling, companies can adapt their messaging swiftly and maintain relevancy. AI also allows for hyper-personalization, which is crucial for building deeper connections with diverse

audiences.
Hotel Insider: How can Meltwater’s capabilities in aggregating data across TV, radio, and online platforms support the Maldives in reaching top-of-the-funnel potential visitors?
Mimrah: Meltwater excels in aggregating and analyzing data from diverse channels, including TV, radio, and digital platforms. By uncovering global travel trends and audience preferences, we can help Maldivian tourism stakeholders target their marketing efforts more precisely, showcasing the Maldives as an ideal destination to potential visitors who might not yet be actively considering it.
Hotel Insider: You mentioned that AI and prescriptive intelligence are essential for tourism growth in the recent Data Forum. Could you elaborate for us here on what are prescriptive insights and how can it transform decision-making for Maldivian tourism stakeholders?
Mimrah: Prescriptive insights involve using data not just to understand what has happened, but to recommend actionable steps forward. For Maldivian tourism, this means analyzing traveller behavior and preferences to identify opportunities for tailored experiences, optimal pricing, and new markets. This approach transforms decision-making by turning data into concrete strategies that drive growth.
Hotel Insider: With Gen Z's social media habits in mind, especially their preference for discovery-driven platforms like TikTok, what types of content do you believe will resonate best with younger travellers?
Mimrah: Gen Z craves authenticity and creativity. Short-form, visually engaging content that highlights unique, shareable experiences will resonate the most. Storytelling that includes behind-the-scenes looks, local culture, sustainable practices, and immersive activities will capture their attention and drive organic discovery.
Hotel Insider: “Quiet luxury” has emerged as a growing trend, especially among travellers wary of ostentatious displays. How can Maldivian tourism brands position themselves to appeal to this segment?
Mimrah: Maldivian brands can focus on experiences that emphasize exclusivity, personalization, and sustainability. By aligning with the values of understated elegance and meaningful travel, they can attract this discerning audience. Showcasing private escapes, eco-conscious luxury, and culturally rich experiences will appeal to travellers seeking depth over display.
Hotel Insider: How can media monitoring evolve to address the “trigger-happy” approach in handling issues, ensuring responses are more measured and strategic?
Mimrah: Media monitoring must integrate predictive capabilities and sentiment analysis to provide more context and foresight. This enables brands to assess the potential impact of their actions and craft responses that are thoughtful and strategic, rather than reactive. Training teams to interpret nuanced insights is also essential for ensuring measured communication.
Hotel Insider: How do you balance work and life in the fast-paced industry you are in?
Mimrah: Balancing work and life comes down to prioritizing what matters and building a strong support system. For me, spending quality time with my family, especially the ‘three Ms,’ provides balance and grounding. It’s also about instilling positive habits and embracing moments of rest and joy amidst the hustle.
Hotel Insider: What do you think media monitoring should look like today, as opposed to the traditional model, especially in handling rapid digital shifts?
Mimrah: Modern media monitoring must move beyond passive observation to proactive intelligence. It should leverage real-time data analytics, incorporate AI-driven forecasting, and provide actionable insights that help organizations stay ahead of trends. The focus should be on enabling brands to navigate digital noise with clarity and precision.
Hotel Insider: Thank you Mim, this chat has been thought-provoking.
From home cooking to haute cuisine; a tale of talent, transformation and excellence.
Chef Gaushan De Silva has one of those rare success stories that are genuinely about emerging from humble beginnings. Growing up in beautiful Kandy in Sri Lanka, Chef Gaushan was just 10 years of age when he had to begin cooking for his family. And within that responsibility, he found his passion. By the time he was 16, he was already working in the kitchen of Swiss Hotel in Kandy as a trainee. He went on to work in the kitchen of Conrad Maldives Rangali Island in 1999, where his skills were appreciated by many.
Over the years, Chef Gaushan has had the honour of being one of the chefs for the Jordanian Royal Family, cooking for the King and Queen in their private residences. A year after serving at royal kitchens, he returned to the Maldives to join Huvafen Fushi, where he rose to the role of Chef de Cuisine. He oversaw the resort's two main restaurants, which catered to a discerning clientele. Velaa Private Island Maldives’s owner and Czech Billionaire Jiri Smejc happened to be among them.
Smejc bore witness to Chef Gaushan's culinary expertise and recruited him as part of the opening team of Velaa Private Island Maldives. Chef Gaushan was then given the opportunity to refine his skills at some of the world's most prestigious culinary establishments in Europe. The kitchens he graced and grew in include three-starred Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athénée, three-starred Restaurant NOMA in Copenhagen by René Redzepi, Édouard Loubet's eponymous two-starred restaurant in Bonnieux, Robert I-alleman's one-starred Auberge de Noves in Provence, one-starred Yam' Tcha by Adeline Grattard in Paris, and Kampa Park and La Finestra in Cucina in Prague.
"I’ve found inspiration in every aspect of my life. From my family and my first chef mentor, to former colleagues and working with renowned chefs around the world, every experience has shaped me."
Chef Gaushan returned to the Maldives in 2012 to open Aragu Signature Restaurant at Velaa Private Island. With his newly honed skills and acquired knowledge of classical European cooking techniques, Chef Gaushan added his own touches to his creations. From Executive Sous Chef to Resort Chef de Cuisine to Executive Chef and now Culinary Director, Chef Gaushan swiftly rose through the kitchen brigade.
Molded by Chef Gaushan’s expert hands, Aragu became the only restaurant in Maldives to be voted into Asia's 50 Best Restaurants Top 100 in 2021. The restaurant has also received other prestigious accolades including Best Signature Restaurant in the World 2019 by Paradise Magazine, Top 12 Best Luxury Restaurants in Maldives 2020 by Lifestyle Luxury Awards, World's Best Culinary Excellence 2021 by Boutique Hotel Awards, and was inaugurated into La Liste Awards 2022.
We at Hotel Insider spoke to Chef Gaushan about his impressive culinary journey, and came away pleasantly surprised by his humility and honesty.
Hotel Insider: You had to take on the enormous responsibility of cooking for your family at the age of ten. How do you think that experience shaped who you are today?
GDS: Cooking for my family has taught me to add a personal touch to the dishes I now prepare for guests. Even today, whenever I cook or create a dish, I think of our guests as family. This inspires me to deliver the highest quality food, infused with love and a deep passion for cooking.
Hotel Insider: Jiri Smejc personally recruited you when he opened Velaa Private Island Maldives. There is a pattern of your skills in the kitchen being noticed, appreciated, and desired. How does that make you feel?
GDS: Being personally recruited by Mr. Jiri was one of the best things that ever happened to me, and it truly changed my life for the better. I felt deeply honoured, as though it was a reward for the good deeds I had done in the past. It also gave me a sense of security,
knowing I was in safe hands.
Hotel Insider: How was your culinary journey through Europe before joining Velaa Private Island?
GDS: Travelling through Europe opened my eyes to a wide range of cooking techniques, flavours, and creative approaches. Working alongside some of the best chefs inspired me to continuously improve and strive for excellence with every dish I create.
Hotel Insider: Throughout your impressive career in several distinguished locations, what has been the most impactful experience you've had?
GDS: Working at Noma in Denmark was a life-changing experience for me. I saw and learned so much during my time there, and it reignited my passion for cooking. Noma's reputation as one of the world's top-ranked restaurants for five years speaks volumes about its excellence and influence.
Hotel Insider: Who has been your greatest inspiration in your culinary journey?
GDS: To be honest, I’ve found inspiration in every aspect of my life. From my family and my first chef mentor, to former colleagues and working with renowned chefs around the world, every experience has shaped me. Being part of the incredible team at Velaa is no exception. Every moment along this journey has inspired and enriched my culinary path, fueling my passion and growth.
Hotel Insider: What is the Everest of your culinary career and have you already climbed it?
GDS: Being a competent and passionate chef, I have always dreamed of owning a Michelin-starred restaurant. While I have yet to achieve this goal, it remains a driving force in my culinary journey.

GDS: I want to thank my inner self for being my greatest support system. This journey hasn’t been easy, but the belief I’ve had in myself and the drive that has fuelled me over the years have kept me moving forward and continue to push me toward my goals and dreams.
