Conversation

Andrew Jansson

Andrew Jansson first took on a role in the Maldives as the F&B Director at Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort & Spa, where he led his team through the pre-opening stages. His proven track record has led him to prestigious positions in the hospitality sector, and he is currently serving as the pre-opening Cluster General Manager of The Atollia, which includes Centara Mirage Lagoon Maldives and Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives.

For Andrew, returning to the Maldives feels like coming home; his last posting in the region was as general manager at Kurumba Maldives.

Hotel Insider: You’ve had an impressive career, and in the beginning, you held roles in F&B. How has that experience shaped you into the leader you are today?

Andrew: I think one of the key factors is that working in F&B means you are always at the forefront, dealing with guests from morning until night. It’s not just about the basic service aspects, but more about the interactions and engagement that come from those experiences. Early on, I learned the importance of establishing rapport with guests, and that has guided me throughout my career. My leadership style has always been about leading from the front and being present in the operation.

Another key point from those F&B days is that, beyond the operational aspects, you are also involved in areas such as sales, marketing, revenue management, entertainment, and cost control. There is also a greater focus on special events and innovation. All of that exposure was immensely beneficial in preparing me to take on roles beyond the F&B domain.

Hotel Insider: Your first pre-opening experience in the Maldives was at ShangriLa. How are you applying the invaluable lessons from that experience as the Cluster GM of two resorts currently in the preopening stage?

Andrew: What I have learned is that you

need to surround yourself with a strong team and a solid network of business partners you can rely on. I realized back then that when you assemble a team of not only technically skilled individuals but also those who share a similar mindset, anything can be achieved as a team. We had a great team back then, and for us to succeed in opening these two new properties, I will need to replicate that success here with Centara. So far, so good. We have a solid preopening team, and I am confident that each of them will contribute significantly to the successful opening of both resorts.

Hotel Insider: From your perspective, what are the current challenges faced by the Maldives' hospitality sector?

Andrew: Given the Maldives' seasonal nature as a destination and shifting guest travel patterns, our main challenge is finding ways to maintain consistent occupancy levels and average rates year-round while continuing to meet guests' expectations for quality and experience. In recent years, I have noticed we are experiencing higher highs and lower lows. During peak seasons, resorts are still able to attract demand at high rates, but in the low season, occupancies and rates take a significant dive, often resulting in resorts not breaking even for several months of the year. This creates a vicious cycle of cutting costs, slashing rates, and making long-term viability a challenge.

In an increasingly competitive buyer’s market, we need to find ways to fill the gaps in the off-peak season while still maintaining our quality-to-price proposition. With many

"I learned early on the importance of establishing rapport with guests, which has guided me throughout my career. My leadership style is about leading from the front and being present."

more resort developments underway, average occupancies will continue to decline, and this will have long-term impacts on how we operate.

Hotel Insider: Given your love for car analogies, what are the key 'engine parts' that need to be fine-tuned to ensure smooth operations and sustained success?

Andrew: I like your question! Let’s assume we all have a similar engine, and the hardware is the same. What we need is the right fuel for combustion and, most importantly, the right oil to ensure it runs smoothly and reduces friction and wear. Our fuel is our people—the employees who make things happen on a day-to-day basis. Without a strong team, we cannot succeed. But how do we ensure that this team performs well? That’s where the oil comes in. For me, it represents our vision and mission, our core principles, SOPs, training, and all the unseen processes that prevent friction in the operation. We must take care of our employees by providing them not only with the right tools to do their jobs but also with the motivation to enjoy their work and continue doing it for many years. With the right oil, our sustained success is guaranteed.

Hotel Insider: In your experience, how does the concept of luxury in the Maldives continue to evolve and what role do you think sustainability will play in the future of high-end travel?

Andrew: The funny thing about luxury is that it can mean so many different things. At the end of the day, the concept is relative and highly subjective. What I consider luxury is likely very different from your idea of luxury. What the Maldives has done so well over the years is offer a taste of luxury to many different types of guests—ranging from the barefoot luxury concepts of the early high-end resorts to the more glamorous, resort-chic style properties. From couples, honeymooners, and celebrities to multi-generational families, as the guest mix has evolved, so have the offerings at luxury resorts. It's no longer about 'bigger is better' or 'more expensive equals more luxurious.' Instead, it’s about differentiating ourselves and offering unique and relevant experiences that meet the desires

of each guest.

In terms of sustainability, it is crucial for all resorts to have a well-developed and clear process for long-term sustainability. For instance, with our solar panel power generation at the two new resorts, we will rarely need to run our generators, significantly reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. However, sustainability requires a comprehensive approach, and many more efforts are necessary to achieve long-term results.

Hotel Insider: Looking ahead, what is your vision for the development of the two new properties and how do you plan to create meaningful opportunities for local talent to contribute to their success?

Andrew: The Atollia, which includes the Centara Mirage Lagoon Maldives and Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives, will be a multi-island destination wonderland, offering distinctly different yet seamlessly connected travel experiences centered around a mesmerizing Indian Ocean lagoon. Guests will have access to two captivating Centara properties—the elegant Centara Grand, a sophisticated and tranquil haven of exclusive, immersive experiences; and the vibrant Centara Mirage, a family-centric, underwater-world-themed oasis. Within this unified island sanctuary, guests will enjoy a rich tapestry of culinary wonders, exciting activities, and unparalleled relaxation, all effortlessly intertwined with the stunning beauty of the Maldives and Centara’s signature modern Thai hospitality.

Developing and nurturing local talent will be one of our key pillars. Particularly with an opening like this, we need to hire people who have an innate understanding of what it takes to provide the unique guest experiences for which the Maldives is so renowned. While it’s still early days, I foresee many opportunities for local talent to grow with us—not just within these two properties, but across our other locations here in the Maldives and abroad.

Hotel Insider: Thank you for sharing Andrew, this is very insightful.

The Way of Water

How the Maldives is restoring water security on its most at-risk

outer islands

As We Were

In Raa Atoll Madduvari Island in central Maldives, homemaker Sazna Abdul Rasheed, was sweltering under the scorching heat of the tropical sun. It was the hottest time of the year, with the March equinox having just passed. The prolonged dry spell had drained the community's water reservoirs, leaving them depleted. Excitement welled within Sazna as she prepared to harvest the eagerly awaited abundance of rainwater expected to shower down from the heavens later that afternoon. Word had spread about this promising forecast through the community's newly upgraded weather app, sparking hope amidst the parched landscape.

Sazna cleans out her roof with an ekle broom, crafted from the midrib of coconut leaves, to prepare for harvesting rainwater. The rain will collect in her roof gutter, which channels the water into downspouts and then into large household tanks, ready for daily use—from drinking to cooking and washing. The way it’s been done for generations.

Although Sazna’s island of Raa Madduvari is one of the recent recipients of the water network under the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) project led by the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, and her home now gets a regular supply of water, Sazna is still adamant about collecting the rainwater today.

“The water network in Raa Madduvari Island will give 1,628 residents, including 790 women, access to safe drinking water, increase water security and help the people of the island to overcome water shortages caused

due to climate change. But we would not want people to stop relying on time-tested methods of resilience that have worked for them through the ages and made better economic sense. I refer to the old local adage ‘veheythaa fen nagaashey’ (collect water whilst it rains). Keep doing that. Keep being prepared. Build on your self-sufficiency and become resilient,” the words of a UNDP official from a recent visit to the island echoes in Sazna’s ears.

99% Water

For the Maldives, its unique geographical attributes make its water resource situation complex and diverse. With more than 80% islands already experiencing drinking water shortages annually during the dry season, the country is faced with freshwater security problems resulting from climate change induced variable rainfall patterns, more frequent extreme weather events and sea-level rise induced salinity of groundwater.

With more than three quarters of its 1,190 coral islands standing less than 1 meter above sea level, the Maldives, comprised of 99% water and 1% land, is extremely vulnerable to climate change.

The impacts are already in evidence. Records show the small island state is already seeing significant warming alongside prolonged dry periods and decreasing total rainfall, sea level rise, and more frequent and intense extreme weather events such as flash floods.

Taken together, and in addition to existing human-driven pressures on the natural environment, the country faces a perfect storm. The government recognises the scale of the challenges and is focused on climate

action. Adaptation has remained a top national priority.

Too Close for Comfort

Over the years, the small island state’s freshwater resources have faced increasing pressures from overuse and pollution. Now, the impacts of climate change are compounding the challenges, with rainfall becoming increasingly unpredictable and rising sea levels (currently around 3mm/year) polluting precious sources of groundwater.

Drinking water shortages have become a regular occurrence on the outer islands during the dry season, with significant impacts on people’s health, food security and productivity. Poor sanitation and groundwater contamination has exacerbated the risk of water-borne diseases. Women in particular have been affected by poor-quality water due to their family roles in cooking, washing, bathing children and house cleaning.

Complaints of skin irritations and infections are common.

Enhancing water security is a key focus under the small island state’s climate goals and one of the ways the government is building more resilient islands.

The Cooling Effect

In 2017, the Government of the Maldives launched a $28.2 million project with the backing of the Green Climate Fund and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to secure year-round, safe, reliable, and uninterrupted water supply to residents of the most vulnerable outer islands – around

105,000 people, or one third of the national population.

Despite some delays due to COVID-19 travel restrictions and supply chain issues, the project was completed in 2023.

Droplets of Hope

Safe Water for Households Most in Need

One of the cornerstones of the Maldives' water security efforts under the project is the provision of safe drinking water to households most in need. Benefiting nearly 20,000 residents across 29 islands, this initiative has not only ensured access to clean water but has also stimulated livelihoods and economic activity, including the development of tourism. Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) systems, powered by renewable energy sources such as solar PV, have played a crucial role in providing 24-hour water service to communities. Moreover, rainwater harvesting systems have bolstered water storage capacity on 25 islands, ensuring year-round water security. The development of occupational standards, certifications, and training programs has further enhanced the capacity of local stakeholders in managing water resources effectively.

Constant Water Supply

To address the challenges posed by seasonal fluctuations in water availability, the Maldives has implemented decentralized and costeffective dry season water supply systems across seven northern atolls, benefiting approximately 73,000 people. Legislative support, including the development of the Water and Sanitation Act, has laid the groundwork for enhanced governance in water management. The establishment of a monitoring portal for water and sanitation has facilitated real-time monitoring and support at the community level. Investments in enhanced rain forecasting capabilities have

enabled the Maldives Meteorology Service to provide timely alerts, optimizing rainwater harvesting efforts and potentially reducing water provision costs across 29 islands.

Securing Freshwater Reserves

Recognizing the importance of securing freshwater reserves for long-term resilience, the Maldives has undertaken comprehensive groundwater baseline studies for 37 islands, informing the design of Manage Aquifer Recharge (MAR) systems tailored to each island's unique needs. These initiatives have not only improved groundwater quality but have also resulted in the designation of groundwater as a protected resource, shifting water production away from groundwater extraction for long-term sustainability. Legislative and regulatory frameworks, including the Water and Sanitation Act and Water Resource Protection Regulation, have been formulated based on data and expertise derived from groundwater studies, underscoring the government's commitment to safeguarding water resources for future generations.

Turning the Tides

The project represents a turning point in water security in the Maldives, marking a move away from reactive emergency measures to longer-term solutions, with benefits on all fronts.

Importantly, the project’s model is costeffective, combining expensive desalination technology with expanding the water harvesting capabilities and cutting down the cost of imported fuel by switching to renewable energy. The decentralization of water production and distribution means communities will now have access to water in a more timely way during the emergency seasons.

Water will be more affordable for households and the state. The cost of supplying water

during dry periods will be cut by an estimated 40 percent: an annual saving of around MVR 1.5 million (US$98,000).

Due to the scalability of such an efficient model, the Government has now fully adopted it and is currently installing necessary infrastructure across the other atolls and islands.

The project has leveraged more than US$333 million in public funds for further scaling, engendering a true transformation in addressing water shortages.

With access to safe drinking water, communities will see reduced risk of waterborne disease, improved social security, and less outward migration from outer islands, with flow on benefits for development, local tourism and livelihoods.

With recharge and monitoring efforts established under the project, the quality and consumption of groundwater will progressively be restored.

Ultimately, each and every citizen will have clean water on tap, when they need it.

Making annual water shortages, a thing of the past.

We have significantly expanded our product range and market presence over the years, initially focusing on few categories and now delivering a diversified product portfolio featuring over 25,000 products

across 250+ renowned brands. Our offerings include meats, poultry, seafood, gourmet foods, grocery items, dairy products, beverages, minibar snacks, healthy and organic products, as well as a wide range of disposables, eco-friendly packaging, and sustainable solutions. This diversification has allowed us to cater to a broader customer base and adapt to changing market trends. Our strategic partnerships and continuous innovation in both local and export strategies have strengthened our position as a leading food service distributor in the food and beverage industry. Embracing technology has also been crucial to this growth; we've invested in state-of-the-art logistics, warehousing, and e-commerce platforms, enabling us to streamline operations and enhance customer service.

Over the years, sustainability has become a cornerstone of our operations. We have implemented eco-friendly practices across our supply chain and launched products that reflect our commitment to environmental stewardship. Our Eco Touch range is a testament to this commitment. Additionally, we have installed two cutting-edge solar

PV plants at our facilities and introduced sustainable packaging solutions. We continuously seek ways to reduce our carbon footprint and promote sustainability in the industry.

Since SAFCO started, our workforce has grown to over 1,200 skilled professionals, each contributing unique skills and perspectives. In our commitment to customer satisfaction, my team and I have learned the value of flexibility and adaptability. We strive to “never say no” and are always ready to assist with consolidation needs, ensuring we provide the best possible support to our clients.

Hotel Insider: What changes have you noticed in the Maldives since SAFCO International began operations here? And how do you cater to the different changes and demands?

Anju: Since we began operations in the Maldives over 28 years ago, we've witnessed significant changes in the market dynamics. Initially, the focus was on establishing reliable supply chains and ensuring consistent quality for the luxury hospitality sector, which constitutes 90% of the resorts we serve today.

Over the years, we've adapted to evolving demands by not only expanding our product range to meet diverse culinary needs but also by integrating sustainable practices into our supply chain. This approach both aligns with the growing global trend towards eco-friendly solutions and resonates deeply with the Maldives' commitment to environmentally conscious operations.

Our long-standing presence has allowed us to build strong partnerships with local stakeholders, enabling us to anticipate and respond effectively to the unique challenges and opportunities presented in this vibrant market.

Hotel Insider: You have now expanded across the UAE, Middle East, and other regions as well. What do you focus on

"Our long-standing presence has allowed us to build strong partnerships with local stakeholders, enabling us to anticipate and respond effectively to the unique challenges and opportunities presented in this vibrant market."

when penetrating new markets?

Anju: When penetrating new markets, especially from an export director's perspective, our focus typically revolves around several key areas. Prioritising thorough market research to understand the demand and competition of the new market is crucial. We also place important on adapting our products to local preferences, establishing efficient distribution channels, ensuring compliance with regulations, and fostering strong partnerships.

Continuous adaptation and strategic alignment with local requirements are key to navigating diverse international markets successfully, ensuring sustainable growth and effective market penetration.

Hotel Insider: Here in the Maldives, we are very much focused on the one island, one resort concept. Are there any challenges you face when distributing goods to such a dispersed destination?

Anju: We do encounter unique challenges in distributing goods to multiple resorts scattered across the Maldives. The geographical dispersion and the one island, one resort concept can pose logistical hurdles, especially given environmental factors like changes to the climate that can impact the quality and shelf-life of goods in transit.

Despite these challenges, our commitment to exceptional service remains steadfast. Our team ensures that we not only meet, but exceed expectations in delivering highquality products, leveraging our extensive experience and dedicated logistics solutions

to maintain the integrity of our offerings throughout the supply chain.

Hotel Insider: What’s the next phase for SAFCO International, in the Maldives and beyond?

Anju: SAFCO International anticipates significant growth in both the Maldives and globally. In the Maldives, we are enhancing our partnerships with resorts, delivering tailored solutions and sustainable practices for the island-resort market. Our commitment extends worldwide as we explore opportunities in emerging markets and strengthen our presence in established regions, reinforcing leadership in culinary excellence and customer satisfaction. Internationally, our strategy focuses on expanding our reach through strategic initiatives and partnerships, driving forward innovation in logistics and supply chain operations to enhance efficiency and reduce environmental impact. This commitment underscores our dedication to delivering exceptional quality and service to our diverse clientele worldwide.

At SAFCO International, we aim to set new standards of excellence in the global marketplace through continuous investment in people, processes, and sustainable practices that uphold our values of quality, innovation, and diversity in the food and beverage industry.

Hotel Insider: Is there any message that you would like to give to your valued customers, business partners and anyone who is looking for a trusted food supplier?

Anju: Reflecting on our journey, especially our experiences in the Maldives, I’ve learned so much from working closely with chefs and culinary industry professionals. Today, as a unified team, we are proud to offer comprehensive solutions, both food and nonfood, under one roof. Your continued trust and partnership inspire us to consistently exceed your expectations.

On behalf of SAFCO Group, we deeply appreciate the partnerships we have built over the years and look forward to continuing this successful collaboration.

Hotel Insider: Thank you so much for your time, Anju. It was our pleasure to chat with you.

Lukasz Prendke, now at the helm of Shaviyani’s Sirru Fen Fushi as General Manager, brings invaluable experience to elevate the resort to higher standards. His experience in neighboring Sri-Lanka and China has fine-tuned his leadership skills enabling him to apply intuitive solutions to obstacles faced and enhancing the guest experience at the properties he worked at.

In this chat with Hotel Insider, Lukasz reflects on his career, outlines his current role, and shares his plans to enhance Sirru Fen Fushi to the next level of luxury.

Hotel Insider: Congratulations on your new role as the general manager of Sirru Fen Fushi. What brings you back to Shaviyani Atoll?

Lukasz: Thank you! Nine years ago, I was working as a general manager at a nearby property. Returning to Shaviyani Atoll feels both exciting and like coming back home. The natural beauty of Shaviyani Atoll, combined with the unique positioning of Sirru Fen Fushi, offers the perfect opportunity to create truly elevated and meaningful experiences for the guests. The opportunity to work with a dedicated team on this beautiful island and grow the resort's reputation is what inspired me to return.

Hotel Insider: You spent a significant amount of time in China, where you initially did not speak the language. How did living in a foreign country contribute to your career growth?

Lukasz: Yes, I lived and worked in China for nearly 10 years. It was an incredibly inspiring and life-changing experience. It taught me the importance of adaptability, crosscultural communication, and understanding different perspectives. When I first arrived, not knowing the language was a challenge, but it pushed me out of my comfort zone and motivated me to learn Chinese quickly. Navigating unfamiliar environments helped me develop problem-solving skills, as I often had to come up with creative solutions when traditional methods didn’t work. Overall, the experience improved my leadership skills, expanded my global perspective, and enhanced my ability to lead cross-cultural teams. These skills have been crucial in advancing my career.

"Navigating unfamiliar environments helped me develop problem-solving skills, as I often had to come up with creative solutions when traditional methods didn’t work. This experience improved my leadership skills and expanded my global perspective."

Hotel Insider: You’ve also had extensive experience in our neighboring country, Sri Lanka. How do you think the Maldives and Sri Lanka can collaborate to boost tourism in a way that benefits both nations?

Lukasz: Both the Maldives and Sri Lanka offer unique, complementary experiences to travelers, and I believe there is great potential for collaboration. Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage, lush landscapes and wildlife, combined with the Maldives’ pristine beaches, luxury accommodations, and spectacular underwater world, create an attractive multi destination experience. By working together on joint marketing campaigns, direct flight routes, and special travel itineraries, both countries can enhance their appeal to long haul tourists, offering a diverse yet seamless travel experience that benefits both economies.

Hotel Insider: Shaviyani is one of the less saturated atolls in terms of tourism compared to the rest. How does this serve Sirru Fen Fushi in a positive way?

Lukasz: The relative remoteness of Shaviyani Atoll is an advantage for Sirru Fen Fushi. It allows us to offer our guests a more intimate and exclusive experience, away from crowds and free from light and noise pollution. The unspoiled beauty of the surrounding environment, combined with the sense of seclusion, creates the perfect atmosphere for those seeking peace, privacy, and luxury. It also provides us with the opportunity to focus on sustainability and offer experiences that are in harmony with nature.

Hotel Insider: Luxury, when intangible, is deeply rooted in stillness and being in the present moment. How do you relate to this, both personally and for your guests?

Lukasz: I strongly believe that true luxury goes beyond material comforts; it's about the quality of experience and mindfulness. For

me, being present and still allows for a deeper appreciation of the world around us, and this is something I aim to bring to the experience at Sirru Fen Fushi. Whether through a quiet moment on the beach, a rejuvenating spa treatment, or simply unwinding in a villa surrounded by nature’s beauty, we strive to help our guests slow down, disconnect, and truly savor the present moment. Personally, these moments of stillness bring me clarity and peace, and I hope to share that with others.

Hotel Insider: What do you plan to do differently to elevate the well-kept secret that is Sirru Fen Fushi?

Lukasz: My focus is on enhancing the guest experience while maintaining the resort’s strong connection to nature and sustainability, which are core values for us. We plan to introduce new wellness programs, such as IV therapy and sound healing, along with expanding our food and beverage options by launching new restaurants. Our goal is to make every guest feel that Sirru Fen Fushi is their own personal sanctuary, where every detail is thoughtfully designed for their comfort and enjoyment.

Additionally, I aim to expand our outreach to new markets while keeping the intimate, boutique feel of the resort intact.

Hotel Insider: Thank you Lukasz for your insights.

Palmfringed beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and a sense of serenity make the Maldives a picture-perfect destination that continues to capture the hearts of travellers globally.

First PADI Award for Female Divers: A Global Milestone

Continuing the Maldives' streak of accomplishments, the country became the first-ever recipient of the PADI "Outstanding Contribution to Female Diving" Award. The honour was bestowed upon OBLU NATURE Helengeli by SENTIDO, a resort

managed by Atmosphere Core, and its dive partner, TGI Maldives. The award recognizes the exceptional dedication to promoting female divers and contributing to gender diversity within the diving community. This achievement solidifies the Maldives as a leader in marine conservation and inclusivity within the diving industry.

Strengthening Collaboration: MMPRC’s Strategic Partnerships

In line with its mission to enhance the Maldives’ global appeal, MMPRC entered into several key partnerships in July and August. One such collaboration was with the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI), formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This MOU will enable both organisations to work together in conceptualising destination marketing strategies and sharing valuable tourismrelated data.

Additionally, MMPRC signed another MOU with the National Hotel and Guesthouse Association of Maldives (NHGAM), focusing on promoting the Maldives as a leading global tourist destination through fairs and events such as the Asian Tourism Fair (ATF) 2024. These partnerships are crucial in ensuring that the Maldives maintains its competitive edge in the global tourism market while supporting the growth of local island tourism.

Expanding Air Connectivity: Xiamen Airlines and Malaysia Airlines

A significant boost to the Maldives' tourism industry came from the expansion of international air connectivity. In July 2024, Xiamen Airlines launched scheduled flights between Xiamen, China, and Velana

International Airport. This development, following the airline’s introduction of charter services earlier in the year, is expected to increase tourist arrivals from China, one of the Maldives' key source markets. MMPRC’s CEO, Ibrahim Shiuree, emphasised the importance of this move, citing the increased opportunities it presents for both the tourism industry and the wider Maldivian economy. In a similar development, Malaysia Airlines resumed direct flights to the Maldives in August, a move that is anticipated to diversify the tourist base and enhance connectivity with Southeast Asia. The direct flight route between Kuala Lumpur and Malé was warmly welcomed by MMPRC and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), with the flight’s arrival celebrated through a ceremonial water

salute at Velana International Airport.

Preparations for Promotion of Maldives at the Asian Tourism Fair 2024

In a bid to further strengthen its presence in the Asian tourism market, MMPRC, in collaboration with Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) and NHGAM, curated a dedicated Maldives stand at the ATF-Dhaka. The stand will offer a range of products and services from the country’s tourism industry. The event will also highlight the Maldives’ unparalleled natural beauty, rich marine life, and exceptional hospitality, reinforcing its status as a preferred destination for Asian travellers.

Launching New Campaigns: Promoting the Maldives in Japan and Beyond

Visit Maldives launched a targeted campaign in the Japanese market in August 2024. Partnering with TVer, a leading video-ondemand network, MMPRC aimed to promote the Maldives as an ultimate travel destination. The campaign, which ran throughout August, featured video advertisements showcasing elements of the Maldives’ luxury offerings, its underwater marvels, and its appeal to couples and families. Tapping into the Japanese market through such innovative campaigns, MMPRC continues to reach new audiences, solidifying the Maldives’ reputation as a top destination. Another significant new campaign launched by MMPRC was the “Discover Maldives” webinar series, a global initiative aimed at strengthening destination presence and engaging travel trade professionals worldwide. The webinar series, providing valuable insights into the diverse tourism offerings of the breathtaking Maldives, was initiated with the webinar for the French market.

Each webinar targets approximately 60-80 travel professionals and trade media and is conducted in localised languages to ensure effective communication with travel agents and tour operators. Featuring informative presentations by industry partners, these sessions provide valuable insights into the destination's unique features, experiences, and offerings.

The "Welcome India" 3-City Roadshow and Press Conference

MMPRC also extended its marketing efforts to the Indian market with the “Welcome India” 3-City Roadshow, which took place in July and August. The roadshow, which spanned New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore, brought together 23 industry partners from the Maldives, including government officials and key stakeholders. The event was aimed at promoting the Maldives’ unique tourism offerings and fostering partnerships between Indian and Maldivian travel trade sectors.

Given India’s close proximity and growing middle-class population, this roadshow was a key strategy in maintaining and expanding the Maldives’ appeal to Indian travellers.

Following the successful conclusion of the roadshow, the Ministry of Tourism, MMPRC, and MATATO shared the latest tourism industry updates and highlights from the “Welcome India” roadshow with local media with a press conference, hosted by MMPRC. The press conference focused on strengthening the tourism industry through open transparent communication and cooperation. MMPRC shared insights into its

operations, outlining strategies and initiatives designed to highlight the Maldives' unique experiences and drive Indian and global travel trade growth.

Cultivating Female Empowerment in the Tourism Industry

A significant highlight of August 2024 was MMPRC’s endorsement of the Maldives Travel Conference - Women’s Edition. This event served as a platform to celebrate and empower women working in the tourism industry while exploring the challenges they face. The event featured two panel discussions, each comprising prominent women figures from within the industry. MMPRC’s support for such initiatives underscores its commitment

to cultivating a more inclusive and equitable tourism industry, with women playing a crucial role in the development of the nation.

Innovation and Connectivity: Strategic Partnerships with Fliggy and Maldivian

MMPRC’s efforts to enhance tourism development extended beyond marketing initiatives, as demonstrated by its partnership with Fliggy, China’s leading online travel platform, and Maldivian, the national airline. The partnership with Maldivian aims to combine the strengths of both organisations to create innovative marketing campaigns and initiatives that will attract visitors from around the globe. Through joint efforts, MMPRC and Maldivian will focus on business-

to-consumer marketing, including branded advertisements, promotional activities, and global campaigns.

The signing ceremony for the partnership with Fliggy was held at the breathtaking Villa Nautica. By collaborating with Villa Resorts to host the signing ceremony at Villa Nautica, Visit Maldives aims to underscore the Maldives’ appeal as an ideal location for MICE travel, events, and conferences.

“We deeply value the strong relationship between our two countries and appreciate the love the Chinese people have for the Maldives,” said Minister of Tourism, Ibrahim Faisal. “This partnership is a wonderful opportunity to build on that connection”

These partnerships aim to amplify the Maldives’ destination presence in key markets through joint marketing campaigns and promotional activities to position the Maldives for continued growth and success in the competitive global tourism landscape.

Shaping the Future of Maldives Tourism with the Future Summit, TTM, and South Tourism Development Symposium

To cap off the summer, the inaugural Future Summit, hosted by Destination Future and endorsed by Visit Maldives, took place in August. The event brought together pioneers of the Maldivian tourism industry and top industry leaders to discuss the future of tourism in the Maldives. The summit was a momentous occasion, held at the Kurumba Maldives resort—the very place where Maldivian tourism began. It set the stage for discussions on innovation, sustainability, and the next phase of tourism growth in the Maldives, with MMPRC at the heart of this transformation.

Another major local tourism event held in August was Travel Trade Maldives. The 8th edition of TTM Maldives 2024, which commenced on 21st August at the Meerumaa Conference Facility, came to a successful conclusion on 22nd August at Adaaran Select HudhuranFushi with the TTM Awards & Gala 2024, announcing this year’s award winners and highlighting outstanding achievements within the hospitality industry. Visit Maldives served as the Destination Partner for this event.

MMPRC also participated at the South Tourism Development Symposium 2024, focusing on enhancing tourism development in the southern regions of the Maldives. The primary objective of the South Tourism Development Symposium 2024 was to explore, propose, and evaluate potential strategies that will boost tourism in the southern atolls by improving direct international connectivity. The symposium served as a platform for gaining deeper insights and knowledge from stakeholders and experts on overcoming barriers and addressing the challenges that currently

hinder tourism growth in these areas. During the event, MMPRC’s DMD Zihuny Rasheed gave a compelling presentation on marketing South of Maldives.

As the Maldives continues to evolve as a premier tourist destination, MMPRC’s efforts in promoting the country on a global stage remain pivotal. The activities and events of July and August 2024 illustrate the organisation’s commitment to expanding

tourism opportunities, fostering international partnerships, and enhancing the visitor experience. With strategic collaborations, awards, and innovative marketing campaigns, MMPRC ensures that the Sunny Side of Life will continue to captivate travellers and retain its place as one of the most desired destinations in the world.

2024 and BeyondMaldives welcomes growth

On World Tourism Day, celebrated on September 27th, Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal announced the highly anticipated opening of the new airport terminal, scheduled for December 2024. In his address, Minister Faisal highlighted the terminal's pivotal role in the broader modernization of the main airport, a project designed to significantly boost the Maldives' capacity to welcome international visitors and enhance its standing as a global travel hub. The new terminal is anticipated to accommodate 7 million visitors annually, a massive shift from the 1.5 million visitors capacity of the current terminal.

The anticipated increase in accessibility to the Maldives will undoubtedly boost the country's evolving tourism landscape, broadening its hospitality portfolio to cater to an influx of travelers seeking the 'isles of heaven.' In 2024 alone, several luxury properties have opened across the atolls, offering a wide range of tropical adventures against the backdrop of sun-soaked beaches, lush villas, and stunning seascapes; a portal towards the art of possibilities and being in the moment.

The Maldives has positioned itself as a premium brand, expanding its doors to global travelers year by year. The newly opened resorts in 2024 reflect the island nation’s commitment towards keeping its global status alive and flourishing, enhancing the Maldives’ reputation for providing unmatched hospitality with ultimate luxury that is uniquely defined at each island. The Maldives have something for everyone from honeymooners to adventure seekers, families and eco-conscious travelers.

Luxury Additions ++

The resort, with 147 sunset beach villas, combines relaxation with adventure, providing guests with a unique way to explore the archipelago from both the sea and the sky, giving a speckled version of the islands from above.

For those seeking tranquility and privacy, Barceló Whale Lagoon Maldives offers an exclusive 5-star escape with 100 villas. This serene resort is designed to cater to those looking to retreat from the world, providing

These are just some of the luxury additions that have made their debut in the Maldives, enhancing the destination's solid appeal with exclusive retreats, cutting-edge design, and immersive experiences that cater to travelers seeking their ‘once in a lifetime’ Maldives experience.

Future Outlook

The growth in tourism doesn’t stop with these recent openings. A number of highprofile resorts are scheduled to debut in the coming years, further cementing the Maldives' status as a luxury travel hotspot.

Ananea Madivaru in North Ari Atoll is set to make waves with its eco-luxury focus, providing an immersive nature experience. In addition, Infinite Maldives by Cocoon, Nammos Maldives, Joali Lagoon, and the JW Marriott Emboodhu Finolhu in Malé Atoll will offer a range of bespoke experiences for discerning travelers, from exclusive overwater villas to world-class dining. Capella Maldives, located in Malé Atoll, is expected to deliver the brand’s signature blend of personalized service and refined elegance. Mandarin Oriental Maldives, is expected to set a new benchmark in ultra-luxury travel, with a focus on personalized service and top-tier amenities.

A particularly ambitious development is the Zamani Islands, a project featuring three distinct resorts, each catering to different travel demographics. Set to open between 2026 and 2027, this project will introduce the Maldives’ first superyacht marina and a variety of unique dining venues, showing the country’s ability to continuously innovate while staying true to its roots of luxury and exclusivity.

Evolving Travel Trends

The Maldives’ growth is not just a result of new resorts but also due to evolving travel trends. Industry experts at resent forums discussed how to remain a competitive and aspirational destination in the global market, by strengthening on current Unique Selling Points and capitalizing on trending travel needs like making the Maldives more familycentric instead of family-friendly.

Post-pandemic, the country has seen an uptick in longer stays, as travelers embrace "bleisure" (business and leisure) trips, wellness retreats, and immersive experiences. Visitors today are seeking more than just picturesque beaches—they are looking for authentic cultural experiences, adventurous excursions, and eco-conscious stays.

With the Maldives now catering to a broader demographic, the industry is widening beyond its traditional focus on honeymooners. Families, younger travelers, and even solo adventurers are becoming an increasingly prominent part of the visitor base. Resorts are accommodating to align with the changing preferences of travelers, while still preserving the aspirational charm that makes the Maldives so beloved. Family-friendly amenities, wellness programs, and initiatives focused on environmental education are among top contending services that resorts offer.

Sustainability First

In line with the rise in tourism, the Maldives is prioritizing sustainability across its hospitality and tourism sector. Majority of the resorts are incorporating eco-friendly practices into their operations, such as waste management, renewable energy, and ocean conservation efforts. The recently launched

"The Maldives is looking to become more ambitious with its hospitality to the international and local community, enhancing its market appeal by serving a wider spectrum of travelers."

"Homemade for the Planet" by Fehikurama, an initiative by Velaa Private Island is a nod towards the country's dedication to sustainable development. Through this program, local communities are taught to adopt self-sufficient practices like hydroponic farming and home composting, which not only help reduce waste but also encourage a deeper connection with the environment.

As tourism continues to flourish, the Maldives is focusing on balancing growth with sustainability to ensure that the natural beauty that draws millions of visitors each year remains intact for future generations.

With the new airport terminal set to open in 2024, significantly increasing visitor capacity, and a wave of luxury resorts offering innovative experiences, the Maldives is looking to become more ambitious with its hospitality to the international and local community. As one of the world’s most desirable destinations, the Maldives is enhancing its market appeal by serving a wider spectrum of travelers and prioritizing sustainable practices.

Nathasha Latheef Working Women

Breaking the glass ceilings in the sky.

Flight Operations Inspector Pilot Fathimath Nathasha Latheef, known simply as Natha, is the first and only female pilot who is licensed to fly a commercial jet aircraft in the Maldives. An impressive feat. If we were on a plane and the pilot’s greeting we heard on the speaker was made by a woman, we would notice that. And we would find that impressive. Anyone would.

Natha’s perspective is different, though. While she is grateful for the opportunities she has received throughout her 20 years of service in Aviation, Natha would like to see more women sharing her seat. She would also like to see more than 23 female pilots, compared to the 423 male pilots in the Maldives, and for the percentage of the global female pilots to be much more than a mere 5%.

While the aviation industry has evolved dramatically within the past 20 years, Natha has been witness to the stagnation of true opportunity for women in the field. We sat down with Natha to discuss her ascension in both altitude and ambition.

Hotel Insider: Who or what was your motivation behind becoming a Pilot?

Natha: As a child, I didn't know I could be a pilot, given that I was female. Back then, I knew that the women dressed in pretty clothes were the ones who served passengers and that the men flew the planes. The idea of a woman being in a pilot’s seat was alien to me because I had never seen a female pilot or known that it was a possibility.

Then I met Captain Ibthisham. She was the first female pilot to captain an aircraft in the Maldives. I was a cabin crew back then and because of her, I wanted to be in the pilot’s seat too. Captain Ibthisham and the first female pilot Captain Sameeha, rewrote the narrative for us women in the Maldivian aviation industry.

Even when I'm abroad, I often have people coming up to me and asking if they can take a picture with me because I am a female pilot. And that is because the idea of a woman being a pilot is still novel. And that, I hope to change.

Hotel Insider: You have been in aviation for a long time and seen a predominantly

male field become a space that women can be a part of too. What are the obstacles you have experienced and seen other women face in your field so far?

Natha: When I first applied to be a cabin crew, I was asked about when I planned to marry and have children. It was disheartening to know that the same question was not directed at male applicants. And when I became a seaplane pilot, I witnessed and was subjected to a shocking amount of gender-based discrimination and derogatory remarks from some male colleagues.

There was always the question of whether a woman can handle both an aircraft and all that is required of a pilot. And the judgment associated with women taking breaks from their career to begin a family and the question of whether women are still capable of giving their best after they return. And of course, the body shaming after childbirth and whether the additional weight would hinder performance. I have never seen a male pilot’s ability questioned when they gained weight.

The general perspective has shifted now, though. No one questions us anymore, since we proved our capabilities throughout the years. But there is still room for improvement with regard to opportunity. In theory, there is equal opportunity in the industry. But so few women are pilots and there is such a limited number of women in managerial roles. And it is not for lack of capability or trying.

Hotel Insider: What do you wish would improve in the industry so that it would be a field where women can thrive?

Natha: The dream would be for women to truly be allowed the same opportunities that men are, and not just in theory, to climb the proverbial ladder. When I used to fly the Dash 8 and applied to fly an Airbus, I was rejected

twice. I was stagnant, bored and the routine of the job didn't excite me.

In 2019, I applied to the Civil Aviation Authority to keep up with the industry and got a scholarship to fly an Airbus A320. But we are talking about 2022, which was just 2 years ago. There are women who are entirely capable of doing what I do but somehow, the doors are closed to them. I wish that would change. And I believe that would only be possible when there are more women in positions of decision making.

If women were involved in managerial positions, there would be no unconscious bias in reform, growth and the implementation of new ideas, which is what is lacking in the industry now. We have proved our abilities and we need to have as much space in policy making as men do.

Hotel Insider: What do you look forward to doing next, in the industry?

Natha: I would like to study further and be one of those women who are in a position to influence the decisions being made. We didn't have much support or mentors in our careers so I would like to be that and enable that for younger women in the industry, and those who dream of being a part of it.

Hotel Insider: Who do you wish to thank for being your support system?

Natha: My daughter, who despite being so little, understands and accepts the demands of my work. My husband and my family, who are completely supportive of my career. The instructors and managers who have trained me and believed in me. And my friends and my female colleagues, who play an integral part in my support system.

Fehikuramaa program at Velaa Private Island

Velaa Private Island celebrates its fourth year of the ‘Fehikuramaa’ program aimed at promoting sustainable development in local Maldivian communities, especially in Noonu Atoll. The initiative launched in 2021 focuses on waste management, ocean pollution, food waste, and home composting. The programme’s latest addition, "Homemade for the Planet," teaches communities self-sufficiency, such as making items themselves and developing hydroponic systems. Velaa's efforts include distributing reusable water bottles, providing waste segregation bins, and hosting educational sessions on recycling and environmental protection. Velaa isn’t just a realization of a dream to create a ‘beyond luxury’ exclusive boutique hideaway in the Maldives; the resort's initiative to nurture environmental consciousness and resilience across the atolls reflects their commitment towards preserving and giving back to the environment.

Joachim Textor

We have a chat with Chef Joachim Textor, the executive chef of Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas. Although appointed to this role quite recently, Joachim brings over 47 years of global culinary experience to the job, having worked in some of the most prestigious hotel chains around the world.

Here, Joachim discusses with us his experiences, his plans for leading the dining at Anantara Kihavah and what exactly being an executive chef entail.

Hotel Insider: To start off, we’d like to ask. What drew you to cooking and the culinary industry?

Joachim: When I was studying in high school, I didn’t know what field I wanted to go forward in. Back then, all the girls in Germany had cooking classes. Our class had only 20 girls, so the teacher asked if any of the boys would like to join the cooking class. I decided to join, and as I started learning different things about cooking, it became my passion.

After I finished high school, I started studying to become a professional cook. To do this, I had to complete three years of apprenticeship. Half of the year, I went to hotel management classes and the other half of the year, I studied all about cooking. When I finished my apprenticeship, my teacher told me that if I wanted to become a good cook and a professional chef, I should go and work in Switzerland. So, I did, and I completed my second apprenticeship there, learning many different cuisines like Swiss, French, Italian – things that I wasn’t able to learn in Germany. I wanted to become a big chef, so I wanted to work and learn about all the different parts of the kitchen. It was a

lot of hard work, different stations, different hotels, all over the world.

Hotel Insider: You’ve worked all over the world and in some of the most prestigious global hotel chains. What has the experience been like?

Joachim: Over the course of my career, I have visited 93 countries now. The Maldives is my 18th country to work at. I call this my chapter 25, because I’ve moved 25 times in my career. Moving and working is always a new challenge. Every time, you have to start all over again in the kitchen from the basics. But I believe this also makes you stronger because you become more knowledgeable and experienced.

I’ve worked in Europe and then Asia on and off for more than 27 years. It took me 17 years to get the title of executive chef. I could have made it earlier than that, after 13-14 years, but I was never greedy about the job title. I always wanted to learn and learn. I’ve always said that when I am at the top, no one can know more than me. I know European, French, Italian fine dining, Middle Eastern flavours, and a lot of Southeast Asian food. I’ve worked in many well-known hotel chains such as The Peninsula Hotels, Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, Westin Hotels & Resorts, Hilton Hotels & Resorts. And I’m really proud of the fact that I’ve cooked for a lot of famous people including celebrities,

politicians, world leaders etc…

Hotel Insider: You’ve quite recently joined Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas as the new executive chef. What are you hoping to bring to the role?

Joachim: The diversity of international food in the Maldives is superb and certainly a very big factor to attract guests and give them a memorable experience. I’m hoping to bring my years of knowledge and experience working all over the world with different cuisines to Anantara Kihavah and give our guests the best fine dining experience with the best possible ingredients. And I’m able to do that and bring that flavour because of my experience working all over the world.

I’m focused on bringing even more ingredients and varying flavours to the resort. Since I became the executive chef here, I have introduced an additional 500-600 new products to the island from around the world, like avocado oil from New Zealand, baby fennel from Greece or bee pollen from Spain to put as a garnish on a risotto. Once a week, I fly in products from 30-35 countries, including things like top-quality beef, quinoa from Bolivia and different fruits, depending on the season, from South Africa, Australia, Egypt, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Vietnam etc…

Along with the diversity in ingredients, there is also more space to work on the finesse and presentation of the dishes; it’s not just about the food at all anymore. My philosophy nowadays is – no matter what the type of food it is, even for the buffet – before the guest bites into the food, they must be wowed by the presentation. The finesse of the food, the background of the buffet, the decoration elements, all of it completes the dining experience. That’s the way I’m training my team as well.

Currently, I’m working on some new recipes and tweaks to the menu with my team. For instance, in our Spice restaurant, it was very Thai cuisine focused before. Now, I’m planning to add a few Chinese and Indonesian dishes which will diversify the food and attract more people.

As old as I am, I have a new slogan – “The best is yet to come.” And that means that, no

"I’m hoping to bring my years of knowledge and experience working all over the world with different cuisines to Anantara Kihavah and give our guests the best fine dining experience with the best possible ingredients."

matter where I’ve worked, I still believe that there is more to come. I said this eight months ago and just two months earlier, at Anantara Kihavah, we opened the first underwater restaurant in the world with a seven-course caviar menu, all the way from appetisers to desserts.

And I’m already thinking what’s next, what more can I do – because I’m an innovative chef. Next year, maybe we’ll open an additional restaurant with a new concept, with all my experience. And this is a good motivation for my team as well, to always aspire for bigger and better things.

Hotel Insider: What exactly does your role as an executive chef entail?

Joachim: As an executive chef, I work breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Before the service starts, I always go into the kitchen and taste the sauces and the condiments. Although these may seem like small things, they’re the things that guests notice, which keeps them coming back and makes an establishment better than others. This is something that I tell my team every day.

When service starts, I try to go to each table and greet the guests by name. This is just a personal touch that I just like to provide, and I believe when they see me, it gives them more confidence. To me, no matter where guests come from, they should all be treated the same. When we sometimes cannot accommodate guests and their different preferences, I try to go and apologise personally, just to make sure that the guest does not go back with a bad impression. That’s

something which is really important to me.

To make sure that everything is running smoothly in the different restaurants, firstly, I have the morning briefing with the outlet chefs, a couple of times a week. Good communication is really important to making sure that everything is running smoothly. I also coordinate the purchasing of different ingredients from all around the world, which is quite time-consuming, along with keeping up with our inventory, because there are cost and profitability factors, both important to ownership too. So, it’s an executive chef’s responsibility to make sure that both the owners and the guests are happy.

So, when all these elements come together, this garners positive reviews from guests, who then they tell their circle, and the word gets passed around which helps with customer relations as well. If the guests are happy, then I’ll ask them if they could comment something on Tripadvisor, and when they do, it helps the reputation of the resort grow as well, which I consider as part of my job too.

Hotel Insider: What’s your advice for aspiring chefs and culinary professionals?

Joachim: First, you should set a goal; where you want to be and what you want to achieve in the next couple of years, something like a plan or a road map. Even if you don’t reach all the milestones in it, you will at least have something to refer to. You should be disciplined, and you should also have the ambition to do well.

As you achieve different goals, and become more successful and well-known, you should continue to work hard, and build your reputation. You should do your research, see who and who works where and what you can learn from them.

Punctuality is very important. Personal hygiene is very important as well.

If you stay only in one place, then you cannot become a global chef. Once you start learning more things, you can mix and match different flavours together, and that is what gives you the edge as a chef.

Hotel Insider: Thank you so much for your time, Joachim. It was an absolute pleasure to speak with you.
