Hello July 15 Dear Friends
Jazz music lovers and golfers have one more reason to love Hua Hin. On July 26th the Hua Hin Jazz Festival took place playing to a large and energetic crowd at the Queen’s park. Our story starts on page 22. Hua Hin’s golf festival is taking place once again this year with 10 courses participating all offering deep discounts during the months of August and September. Courses and rates are outlined on page 28. Our HOT Hotel feature this month takes us to Hua Hin’s Chiva Som Wellness Spa. Read on page 18 why Movie and Sports stars along with Titans of Industry and Royal’s all flock to this internationally famous health retreat. If you talk to parents with children in Hua Hin, one of the things they will tell you is that Hua Hin lacks a fully accredited international school. That is changing and you can read about this new school for those two to eighteen on page 42. For foreigner’s living in Thailand there has been much discussion on the recent tightening of Visa’s. tightening will affect a large number of expats. We thank Thai Visa for explaining this new policy, that’s on page 50. Our HOT Homes of Hua Hin this month features an interview with Kipsan Beck, Chief Marketing Officer for Pace Development. Not only is Pace building the tallest luxury hi-rise in the Kingdom, they are also building the most lavish housing development in Hua Hin. Read about MahaSamutr, playground for the very rich and famous on page 54. Finally, If Bangkokian’s want a quick weekend getaway they come to Hua Hin. If they want a quick tropical island experience they go to this month’s HOT Getaway, Kho Samet. With its 17 white sand beaches you can party the night away or spend a quiet romantic evening, there is truly something here for everyone here, that’s on page 64. From all of us at HOT Hua Hin we hope you enjoy the read.

here is a new must do on Tuesday’s nights, classic “It’s Movie Night” at the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort. The location for this great treat is Lee La Bar, a heavenly setting to catch the evening breeze. The Bar is sheltered with a modern design in dark hues and open to the elements on two sides thus allowing a view of the beautiful main building of the hotel and towards the sea on the other side. There is a drink deal for 600THB +++ all you can drink on selected beers and cocktails, a delectable snack menu and great vintage movies that change every week. On the night we visited an oldie but goodie Charlie Chaplin black & white movie was playing on the wall projector providing nostalgic entertainment. The all you can drink menu includes Local Beer’s such as Tiger and Singha. Classic Cocktail’s such as Blue Kamikaze, Dry Martini, Daiquiri, Mojito and Whiskey Sour. On top of that you can order a delectable array of snacks and tidbits concocted by the Intercontinental Hua Hin Resorts Chef’s.
@ I nte rC ont i ne nta l Hua Hi n Re sort’s
Some of the rare treats on this menu include a trio of mini burgers; Pacific Tuna Tartar, Home Smoked Salmon Tartar and a King Crab burger that will leave you wanting for more. Also you can savor Carpaccio from Fresh Salmon served with Oscietra caviar and mozzarella cheese. Also not to be missed are the Shaken Not Stirred menu featuring Pasta Penne Rigati served with black truffle butter and parmesan cheese served in cocktail shakers. Also served and stirred to your own liking by yourself is the Papillote in Shaker which is Pasta with a lobster Ragout. The idea that you can mix up your pasta in its sauce is great and a novel idea and tastes really nice. If that does not wet your appetite try the Foie Gras Croquettes served with sweet mango and a reduction Modena balsamico. There is also an Oyster Tempura with olive anchovy tapenade dish and the Prawn Fairy that is deliciously served with tomato chutney. This is a great evening to relish for a first date, a business meeting or just enjoy with friends. For more information call:032 616 999 AUG 15 - SEP 15 , 2014

The King and Queen chose Hua Hin as their honeymoon destination so I am not the only one who thinks that way. ore and more Hua Hin is being referred to as not just Thailand’s Riviera but Asia’s Riviera. With its cool and chic lifestyle and “A list” celebrity visitors it’s easy to see why. A big draw for major stars such as David and Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss, Elle Macpherson, Hugh Grant as well as the Thai Royal family is the Chiva-Som spa located at the entrance to Khao Takiab. In the almost 20 years since it was founded it has attained a reputation as one of the planet’s most sought-after wellness spas. AUG 15 - SEP 15 , 2014

Chiva-Som has been voted one of the top three spas in the world in every major list over the past 10 years, so a word of warning: once you’ve stayed there, you’ll find it hard to recreate the same sense of tranquility anywhere else. It’s why 90% of all visitors to Chiva-Som return. Another reason why it’s a favorite of the rich and famous is that when checkingin every guest is required to sign a form pledging they will leave all cameras and electronic devices in their room. This strict policy is in place in order to protect the privacy of their guests. For those with
e-readers (which are forbidden in public areas) a large library is available where books can be checked out during your stay. Once checked in, all guests receive a health consultation that ascertains the guests overall health and well-being along with the areas they would like to improve. A custom program of activities and treatments is then recommended and supervised, tailored to the guest’s individual desires. A fully qualified team of doctors, nurses and program consultants as
well as nutrition, exercise and fitness staff and other professionals are on hand to provide specialized advice and guidance. Many of the programs are effective in combating certain ailments such as stress-related illnesses, cardiac rehabilitation and assisting guests to stop smoking. Chiva-Som also offers the latest treatments aimed at improving the efficiency of the immune system, body rejuvenating and anti-ageing. Chiva-Som’s unique blend of traditional and advanced therapies in the tranquil and holistic spa setting is enhanced by AUG 15 - SEP 15 , 2014
the caring nature of the dedicated team of Thai therapists. They will nurture you through the rejuvenating and healing process as you achieve total wellness to mind, body and spirit. Here, it is believed that beauty is not skin deep - it comes from a tranquil mind and a serene heart. For this reason there are many treatments and activities to choose from that will culminate in the ultimate pampering and revitalization. There are two types of stays at Chiva-Som: A mix/match “credit” stay for three nights or more where you are given “credits” toward therapy sessions, classes, personal fitness training and pampering; and the Wellness Theme programs that lay it all out for you for a specific goal inside of a specific time frame. That might be the Inner Peace Retreat that starts at five nights and includes a massage daily, two tai chi or yoga sessions, a personal training session, a deep tissue massage and an intense eastern medicine treatment (this is where the hot cups and needles come out). Currently, there are ten of these programs, from eternal youth rejuvenation to natural healing to spa pampering and they offer the most effective and value-focused way to go at ChivaSom. Nothing is set in stone here though, except the smoothed pebbles massaging your feet in the Kneipp bath. Don’t like foot massages? Have a scalp session instead. Mixed in are the complimentary consultations for skin, facial, fitness, hair and spiritual health. But Chiva-Som is more than a feel-better break in a stress-laden life. It’s a medical spa as well and there are acupuncture experts and cosmetic surgeons scrubbed and ready through the onsite Niranlada Medi-Spa. For those looking for some intensive bodywork, Chiva-Som has more than 200 treatments handled in a labyrinth of 70 treatment rooms. Many of these treatments will not be on the menu at most 5 Star hotel spas: colonic hydrotherapy, 20
South Indian body manipulation, crystal therapy, chi nei tsang (Chinese abdominal detox massage), Thai massage; Ayurvedic indulgences, such as jala neti, abhyanga, shirobhyanga and shirodhara; “caci” deep wrinkle sessions, moxibustion, natural fertility therapy, balneotherapy and others with names that may not roll off the tongue but are well worth a try. Losing weight at Chiva-Som seems effortless, and usually happens whether it’s desired or not. Breakfast and lunch is available at their Emerald Restaurant and is served buffet style with a tremendous choice of offerings. Dinner is off the menu and includes a starter, soup, entrée and dessert. Each item on the menu has a calorie count, for those keeping a calorie diary. Most ingredients are sourced locally with many picked from the resort’s own organic gardens located in the north of Hua Hin. In addition to their Emerald Restaurant you can also enjoy lunch or dinner at their poolside restaurant adjacent to the beach. Coffee is served only at breakfast and alcohol is forbidden except during dinner with your choice limited to wine or champagne. No expense has been spared at Chiva-Som to ensure their guests stay is one of pampered luxury combined with world-class health facilities and surrounded by true Thai hospitality. Visit once and there is a 90% chance you’ll be back.

H UA HIN JAZZ FESTIVAL O
n Saturday evening July 26th a large crowd was treated to fantastic performances at this year’s Hua Hin Jazz festival. Normally held on the beach in front of the Centara Grand Hotel, this year it was moved to the Queen Sirikit Park. “Saxophone Madness”, a jam session of leading saxophonists in Thailand opened the memorable evening. Hua Hin favorite Koh Mr Saxman headlined along with equally strong performances by sax heavyweights Pisoot Prateeprasen, Passakorn Mora, Krit Booranawittayawut and legendary saxophonist Tewan Subsanyakorn, who appeared as a very special guest. The crowd was then entertained by new stars who have proven themselves to Thai audiences through singing competitions. They include May, Fang Khao and Nut from The Voice, King from The Star, Pure from KPN, and Nat from the Thailand Jazz Singing Contest. American recording artist Steve Cannon and his band followed performing their version of classic jazz standards, a tribute to Jazz Legend Chet Baker as well as songs from their latest album. Next up came the Travellers, a combo-style jazz band from Japan recognized by jazz purists for their magical improvisation.

They were followed by Infinity, one of Thailand’s leading jazz fusion bands for over 25 years and is a role model for all of the kingdom’s young jazz musicians. The night’s finale was Soul After Six, whose alternative legacy conforms to pop, rock and jazz. Stylistic in their own way, the trio is one of the longest remembered artists of their time, with their songs being enjoyed by younger generations today. The Bangkok based company BOFFO organized this year’s free event, their first time doing so although you wouldn’t have known it. The evening ran so smoothly it seemed like they had been doing it for

years. “We would like to make the Hua Hin Jazz Festival into an international event,” said Jesada Daokaew, managing director of Boffo. “And I’m confident we can do it. Major Hua Hin Hotels such as the Anantara, Centara Grand and the InterContinental along with many others had tents set up offering fantastic food and drink, all doing brisk business. This free yearly festival is just one more reason why Hua Hin is such a fantastic place to call home.

Beautiful World
I
t is common in Hua Hin to rent houses that come with only basic furniture and no sense of coziness, or buying a house with some or no furniture. In the latter case the bulk of the inital budget gets spent on the house and basic furniture, and upon on moving in it maybe it doesn’t feel as homey as it should. The easiest & cheapest way to jazz up any new home or an old home is with decorating accessories. Decorative items make a huge impact in any home, they add the lived in feel, add color and add personality. Accessorizing can be done with lights, especially with floor lights and table lights with preferably yellow lights to bring any home to the cozy side. Additionally pillows, bed linens & towels, rugs & carpets, art, mirrors & pictures, baskets and candles, indoor plants make a house pop.
Beautiful World AUG 15 - SEP 15 , 2014
Decorative items are the most inexpensive way to freshen or add a new look to a room, but because they are so easily had, if a home owner is not careful these items can quickly overtake the home.
There are also so many styles to choose from even in Hua Hin that it easy to find something for every taste and every style of home.
Furniture Grand
To make the process of purchasing decoartive items easier we suggest you follow these simple rules: • Buy Quality, as you rather have a few nice things that you can bring with you to your next home rather than cheap stuff that falls apart or starts looking dated after a time. • Rather than focus on quantity try to buy nice things that will add a certain something to the house rather than having many small knick knacks everywhere that clutter up the place and become dust gatherers. • Usually the rule of thumb is to buy your large furniture in neutrals and do selected small things on stronger colors. • Resist the urge to do all you’re decorating in one theme. For example having a few modern pieces mixed with a few old pieces warms up the room plus it adds individuality. • Choose your star decorating item and make it the focal point to anchor a room. Allow other items to take a secondary role. Don’t ask everything to have a leading role; it will just result in visual noise.
Furniture Grand
Places to shop In this story we have used items from Beautiful World and Furniture Grand based in Hua Hin but you can find items from your home from the local wicker store, local market, Home Pro, Index etc. Just remember decorating does not have to be done in one day or one shop, sometimes it takes time to find just the right thing.

t is a rare treat to get invited to review the brand new lunch menu at the beautiful Palm Terrace in the Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin. Palm Terrace is just a stone’s throw from the beach. It’s a beautiful colonial building with a newly renovated interior that reminds you of a bygone era. Then on top of this add top notch food; and you are a happy camper. So we were very exited to try this new menu but we also knew to expect the unexpected as we know from past dinners that the food at the Palm Terrace tends towards Western favorites with a serious Asian twist. We were told that there was now a conscious decision for the lunch menu to be more easy food but with a delicate twist to elevate it to Centara’s standards. With a good start, the lunch started with cocktails & mocktails such as the Cool Breeze and Fizzy Flamingo. Each restaurant in Centara Grand has asked their bartenders to create a signature drink and in friendly competition the bartenders see whose creations are the most popular in the resort. I tested the Fizzy Flamingo, a mocktail that was really nice and refreshing and judging from those who drank Palm Terrace’s cocktail signature drink, the Cool Ocean, it was good too, judging from the way it went down. The lunch itself started with the Appetizer Avocado, Crab and Pomelo Salad with lemon mayonnaise dressing which was fresh in taste and a great way to start a heavy lunch. Although I have never been a fan of Pomelo, after eating this I think maybe I never just ate it in the right way. Served nestled with vegetables and light as rain with a yummy dressing is the only way to eat AUG 15 - SEP 15 , 2014
Pomelo is now my opinion. The next item was another dish recommended by the Chef, the Chicken Curry Panini. The dish consists of roasted chicken breast marinated in red curry, mozzarella cheese tomatoes and coriander served with French fries. This surely will turn out to be a hit with Centara’s sun worshipers by the next door pool. There is nothing like roasted bread and cheese to lift up your spirits, add in chicken with curry and you tend to happily over indulge, which I did. For the main course we were served Pan Roasted Snapper fillet with ginger pumpkin puree served with a bruschetta and Fish and Chips with an Asian Touch, as the fish is marinated in Tom Yum paste batter. The last main course, but not the least, was the Pan Fried Chicken Breast in lemon thyme served with caramelized onion and sundried tomatoes with French style mash potato. I am a big fan of mashed or pureed anything so I was very pleased with both the chicken and fish dish. The plating of the food was beautifully done and the food was indeed simple but do be fooled this is certainly elevated beach dining. All of us had different main course favorites; some liked the not so traditional Fish and Chips and others the tender chicken and the light fish. All dishes were delicious, so as a consequence we ate too much, and we really thought we couldn’t squeeze in anything more but then the trio of desserts showed up and it was difficult to resist. The irresistible dessert trio consisted of Lemon & Lime French Cheese Cake with vanilla lemon ice cream, New Style Crème Brule with chocolate craquelin and highly delicious Chilled Exotic
Fresh Fruit Soup with wine and served with pistachio ice cream. Needless to say I ate most of it. Even though the food is meant to be beach food, it is definitly fine dining and tasted divine. To top off the beautiful lunch the staff at Palm Terrace and Khun Bee from Centara’s Marketing & PR department surprised HOT Hua Hin Magazine’s Khun Tanya with a cute birthday cake on her special day. Also we found out that now exclusively at Centara Grand you can enjoy a glass of limited edition Champagne “Moët Chandon Ice Impérial” which is served traditionally with ice. And what better place to do so than at the beautiful Palm Terrace or on its deck at night gazing over the sea.

HOT Score:
This month’s top score is a hard one to write, because there was no dish that was the clear winner. I really should list all the items we ate as they were all equally good. I do have to say The Palm Terrace is as a location a winner, as it is so beautiful and has wonderful lighting during the day. Reminds me very much of lunches consumed at the bygone Singapore’s Raffles Hotel in feeling. Good job Centara Grand Team! We hope to be by soon again. OT Hua Hin Magazine was thrilled to visit the Spa at The Intercontinental for the first time. The Spa itself is located above the lobby of the Intercontinental Hua Hin in the main building and is designed to create a dark well-appointed cocoon where one can safely snooze during treatments and really get world class pampering. The atmosphere in the Spa is one of hushed luxury; decorated in dark tones and surrounded by staff giving quiet but efficient service. The treatment rooms follow the same tone as the reception area with dark wood floors in a extravagant and classy design.
never tried. The Royal Facial Massage is as its name points out a facial combined with a facial and head massage. The treatment starts by slipping into the softest morning robe and receiving a luxurious foot wash. What follows is the most pampered facial imaginable. Cleansing, scrub and facial mask of Rose extract is applied and during the facial mask a facial and head massage is applied. If you are not sleep by the time the mask is applied then it is at this point when you will nod to la -la land. The treatment leaves you refreshed with a skin that breams with a healthy glow.
It was recommended by the staff that I should try the Royal Rose Facial Massage and then follow it with the ultimate luxury, a treatment by Bastien Gonzalez’s Pedi:Mani:Cure Studio. I was intrested to try both treatments as I was looking forward to getting some pampering for my face, but I must say I was intrigued to try the Bastien Gonzales Manicure and Pedicure as it is a Internationally revered service plus something different I have
After the facial I was whisked off to receive the Bastien Duo 75 min treatment, basically a Pedicure & Manicure in the beautiful Pedi:Mani:Cure Studio . Pedi:Mani:Cure Studio was started by Bastien Gonzalez a worldrenowned podiatrist in France and can now be found in 4-5 star locations around the world. The Pedi:Mani:Cure Studio is housed exclusively at Spa InterContinental. This is not your run of

the mill mani pedi and therefore I found the experience interesting. Not one for manicures or pedicures in general for me a pedicure means chopping my nails as short as they go and I call that a manicure. So I was in luck as although the treatment is usually done by two therapist, but I had the good luck to have Alexandre Lutun Bastien’s Studio Manager in Hua Hin do both. I need to mention Bastien Gonzales has his own range of products, made in France, dedicated exclusively to feet, hand and nails called Reverence de Bastien® that are used in all their treatments. Bastien Gonzalez developed a unique method based on three fundamental pillars: podiatry, nail care and totally relaxing massage. Podiatry: the podiatric aspect is key in Bastien Gonzalez’s treatments, with a special focus on eliminating calluses and advice on proper home upkeep. The “Pedi:Mani:Cure Studio” website says Bastien wanted to blow the
customer’s mind with their treatments with a service that puts all other nail, hand and feet treatments to shame and I certainly do agree that they have managed to do so. I saw an international magazine had called the Bastien Gonzales treatments the most decadent Manicure &. Pedicure ever and I have to say I agree to this too. Guests are treated to a treatment using luxuriant equipment and ointments. Treatments begin with a gentle smoothing of the surface of the nails with a cosmetics drill tipped with “pure diamond dust”. The machine looks a lot like a dentist drill but without the “yucks” sensation of drilling. The smoothing removes the first layer of the nail to show clean toe and fingers nails. Actually I was told by Alex that you do not need nail polish after the treatment as your nails will be fresh and clean and have a natural shine. The smoothing is followed by buffing with “chamois leather” which makes the nails shine even more and precision shaping with a “glass file”, as well as “mother-of-pearl” pigment cream treatment. The treatment is finished by gently removing calluses and rough skin before clients enjoy a relaxing and rejuvenating foot and lower leg massage. Heaven! The HOT Score: The Spa Intercontinental is pure luxury centrally located in Hua Hin. Their in house treatments are what you would expect, discreet word class service in a beautiful setting. I especially loved the quality of the small details in the Spa such as ultra-soft plush morning robes, clean and fabulous hair brushes to use after treatment etc. The massage and facial is the ultimate in relaxation and lets you leave the Spa fresh faced and pampered. The “Wow” comes when you add the jet set treatment of the Bastien Gonzales Pedi:Mani:Cure Studio which leaves your nails with shiny pink nails and toes with a totally different nail treatment you ever have been before. After such a treatment no nail polish is needed, just make sure you have really nice open toe shoes to show off your tootsies. U NDER C O N ST RUCTI ON PA RT 5St ruggli ng to keep m oti vate d Starting my fifth month of my fitness revamp is finding me demotivated and unfocused. My first month after deciding to commit to a new fitness active lifestyle found me doing nothing for a month due to shock I like to imagine, but the next 3 months I have been unbelievably motivated for me. I am not good at keeping good habits, I only excel in things that are bad for me and can keep those habits going no problem at all. So I was pleased with my results and the fact that I regularly like clockwork worked out and ate pretty healthy. But suddenly at the end of month 3, I am finding my new motivation lagging but I have to admit I have not given up completely and force myself valiantly to show up to the gym nonetheless. I also have not attended any group classes as I claimed I would. I tried but the people in exercise classes are to “gung ho” for me and I rebel at doing something on other people’s speed and command I might add. But I do not want to lose the momentum I have gained so far so I show up at the gym and count back minutes on the treadmill or the exercise bike. I am sure I look
totally demented with lips moving going “60 seconds, 59 seconds, 58 seconds..”, you get the picture. Also “Thank God”, for the cute boys that entertain my eyeballs in the gym or I would never go. I have decided going to the gym is like any relationship. You have to work on it, in good and bad times. Sometimes there are the good times when everything seems easy you think you look great and feel committed and the minutes at the gym fly by. Then there are times like end of July has been. You are dragging your body around and it all seems hard and irritating. But I guess there are ups and downs and you just have to keep going and put in effort to get results. My diet has taken a down right spiral too. After having guests for a month my new improved eating habits went “Hasta La Vista”. Yesterday I decided to blame my dog for me eating chips…and then caramel popcorn. My dog was happy with sharing both of those with me but did not look convinced when I said “You are forcing me to eat rubbish”. I have really sank to a new low blaming a dog that neither can open a fridge door or do the shopping for me. But this made sense
when i was lying in bed and watching reruns with a bag of chips. So what to do? Nothing except the same I have being doing all along. Bring the body and the mind will follow, in other words keep forcing myself to do as much as I can possible force myself. I figure at some point the motivation will return. I also have admit that I am also not increasing work out time, weight repetitions or kilos but this is all can get myself to do right now. I still fit into smaller clothes and I guess look fitter but when you are not motivated suddenly also my mind demands more results faster when really not doing as much effort. Crazy? Yes but that is what my mind is telling me. So today I go the gym come hell or high water, and keep putting one foot in front of the other realistically for not that much gain after yesterday gorge on Emmenthal cheese & salami sandwiches, caramel popcorn and Snyder’s chips (the best!). But I am hoping this is a temporary brain block against exercise and it will pass. See you at the gym I am the one who seems to be counting. AUG 15 - SEP 15 , 2014

HOT T IPS: NEW I M MMIGR ATION REGULATI O NS

Visa Runs are now a thing of the
past
Foreignors who do regular visa runs in order to extend their stay in Thailand have less than a month before a crackdown by the authorities to enforce immigration laws more strictly. From August 13, these people will not be able to re-enter the country, regardless of their choice of transport. The Immigration Bureau has already instructed officials to deny entry to foreigners doing visa runs as a measure to stop the exploitation of tourist visas and visa exemptions to live or work here. Visa runs have been common among foreigners in Thailand recently, given that a simple search on the Net turns up several companies offering “visa trips” for expatriates staying or working here. Visa runners are those who leave Thailand and return immediately for the purpose of extending their stay. By exploiting 60-day tourist visas and 30day visa exemptions, many foreigners can work illegally in language schools, or restaurants and other businesses. It AUG 15 - SEP 15 , 2014
is easier for some to get jobs this way, as some employers do not want to go through the complicated process of seeking work permits and like to avoid the expense if they can. Meanwhile, the Immigration Bureau website says: “Leniency will be granted until August 12, but only for passengers arriving by air. Foreigners who come to Thailand must seek a proper visa in line with the purpose of their intended stay here.” Now, those on a visa run who are allowed back in will find an “O-I” (Out-In) mark next to their latest stamp marking entry. From August 13, nobody with an O-I sign on their passport will be allowed to re-enter Thailand if they cannot produce a proper visa. The Immigration Bureau has instructed checkpoints on shared borders to stop visa runners from entering the Kingdom effective immediately. Immigration Division 6 chief Pol MajGeneral Tatchai Pitaneelabut, who oversees immigration affairs in the South, said visa runners come from several countries, including Vietnam, South Korea and Russia.
“They come here to work as tour guides, waiters, waitresses, etc,” he said, pointing out that these visa-runners are often based in tourist centres such as Phuket and Songkhla. However, he said the presence of the so-called “out-in” migrants in the South had been significantly reduced because immigration officials were already enforcing stricter laws. Pol Lt-Colonel Weerawat Nilwat, an inspector at the Sungai Kolok border checkpoint in Narathiwat province, disclosed that immigration officials at his workplace had already barred more than 100 visa-runners from re-entering the Kingdom.“We have to be strict because we have to uphold laws and properly control immigrants. Efficiency on this front will also reduce crime,” he said. Pol Colonel Thirachai Dedkhad, the superintendent at the Sa Kaew checkpoint, said officials under his supervision were not stopping visa runners from re-entering yet. “But we have been warning them to acquire a proper visa before they come to Thailand the next time.” He said immigration officials had also
warned people departing that they must obtain a proper visa if they want to come back. “We have made it clear that if they want to work in Thailand, they must seek a work permit and get the right type of visa,” Thirachai said.

onger visa exemption extensions begin August 29, 2014
The Immigration Bureau has announced that of August 29. 2014 you will be able to extend your visa exemption period whilst you’re in Thailand by 30 days, instead of the current 7 days, giving a total visa-exemption stay of 60 days. The fee for extension of stay is 1,900 Baht (unchanged). Currently, a visa exemption entry can be extended by 7 days at your nearest Immigration office. From August 29th, it can be extended by 30 days. In effect, you can be in the country without a visa for 60 days. Also - the Commander of Immigration has removed the proposed lifetime ban for overstaying 10 years. The Immigration Commander has also stated that immigration are working to ensure that the new rules are being standardized at both immigration checkpoints and immigration offices nationwide. If you are traveling on visa-exempt or with a tourist visa, bring these documents for your extension: 1. Your onward flight ticket or eTicket out of Thailand within the 30 days 2. Minimum 10,000 Baht, or rather 20,000 Baht 3. Hotel booking confirmation - and if you have it, your itinerary 4. One photo, passport sized. 5. Application fee, 1,900 Baht It is not clear whether after 29th August this will still be an automatic refusal stamp with 30 days to leave, or whether the procedure will be changed and you will instead be granted an extension of 30 days.

HOT Homes of Hua Hin by
M
ahaSamutr, currently under construction, sets the luxury standard in Hua Hin. It doesn’t raise the bar, it is the bar, and will be well into the foreseeable future. With a starting price of 40 Million THB this is the most lavish project yet for our Royal beach resort town. HOT Hua Hin Property’s Russ Downing recently met with Kipsan Beck, Chief Marketing Officer for Pace Development, Thailand’s leading luxury property developer to discuss the extraordinary development MahaSamutr. Russ: MahaSaumtr is such an “overthe-top” project that the phrase “UltraLuxe” is truly deserved. With its “first in Thailand” 800 meter long Crystal Clear lagoon covering 45 rai, along with its “first in Hua Hin” 500 million baht Country Club and Beach Club, can you tell us a little of the history behind the project? Kipsan: PACE is a leading Bangkok real estate developer. MahaSamutr was conceived as part of our PACE strategy to expand into resort markets, and for Bangkokians, Hua Hin is the most popular holiday destination for many Thais and expats due to being just 200km away from the city, as well having a rich history and heritage. We maintain strong relationships with our existing buyers, and many of our clients from Ficus Lane and Saladaeng Residences expressed an interest in Hua Hin. However, two major points came up. One was that the current offerings in the market tend to be very space efficient in terms of layout, making them ideal for a couple or a single person, but perhaps not as suitable for a family, as they lack a sense of space. The second common comment was regarding the issues of the sea – due to waves, jellyfish, tides and other issues, several owners stated that it would be ideal if somehow we could enclose a lagoon or somehow ensure that the sea could be enjoyed year round. A further comment was that Hua Hin was a very attractive venue to visit, and ideal to relax but it would be good if PACE could develop some facilities for the family to enjoy similar to our MahaNakhon mixed use development, so looking beyond just shopping, eating and walking along the beach in the afternoon. So it is fair to say the initial thought process began from our own customers in 2012, and then we developed that into a complete cohesive concept last year in early 2013. It was from here, that we concluded a new type of development, where the “sea” would be a manmade one, to be enjoyed year round, and from there we started to expand all the elements we thought a resident or visitor to Hua Hin would want to enjoy in a single place; that is how we envisioned the country club, a place to enable PACE to provide activities for all the family. The location was chosen and possible schemes and elements considered in parallel. Russ: We in Hua Hin are thrilled to have such a landmark development located here. Can you tell us why you chose Hua Hin over other more well-known Thai destinations such as Phuket or Kho Samui? Kipsan: For Thais, Hua Hin is the most popular beach resort to visit, partly because of its proximity to Bangkok and partly due to its rich history. It is realistic to visit for a single evening or a weekend, and particularly for families, it is easy to drive down and find places to stay. Phuket and Samui both require flights AUG 15 - SEP 15 , 2014
so have a strong appeal for international visitors, but there is a convenience, time and cost advantage for people from Bangkok in simply being able to drive down themselves. In addition, the city has developed while retaining a lot of its charm as a Thai destination. We did substantial market research in understanding the market and zoning for Hua Hin, we did in fact consider several other sites but the issue was always that seaside locations tend to be extremely rectangular in shape, very narrow and long, and so they were difficult to be able to provide the exclusive and private experience we hoped to create with our development. We then started looking beyond seaside locations, and the site on soi 112 was immediately attractive to us, as it provided the elements of convenience, a short distance into town yet exclusivity, and enough size to create the lagoon centerpiece. Our research showed that the type of person wanting to have a villa for their family desire a true sense of space, meaning a size substantially larger and of a higher specification than most options available in the market currently. We further identified that for many Bangkokians, the importance of a safe
and secure, private community was very important. We purchased the land in middle of 2013, and commenced construction in late 2013. Russ: You distinguish your two different house styles by the names “Triangle Roof Villa” and “Gable Roof Villa”. Can you tell us about them and what a buyer can expect? Kipsan: The entire development centres around the country club, which is a 4 storey building bringing together a variety of dining, hospitality, indoor sports and the member accommodation portion. The 81 villas are two unique design styles, using a similar design philosophy. Each villa is located adjacent to the lagoon and will provide privacy and space for a large family, featuring 4 bedrooms, a large entertainment area, ample parking and the highest quality of specification in all aspects, including the kitchen and fitout. Much of our market will be Bangkokians using their villa as a holiday home in the weekends. We do expect some residents will be living there full time. To support both owner groups, PACE also provides a full range of property services to ensuring the maintenance and property
management matches the standard expected, similar to what we provide at each of our Bangkok developments. We will be unveiling the first completed villas and commencing Villa sales in early 2015. We expect most owners will be very happy with the design and concept we have created as laid out, but of course as the owner they have the ability to alter the interior layout if they wish. Russ: After reading the first newspaper article about your planned MahaSamutr project in Hua Hin with its luxury homes surrounding a crystal clear lagoon, I went to the lagoon manufacturer’s website and was amazed with their technology. Founded in 2007, the company has over 200 projects in 50 countries and this will be its very first lagoon in Thailand. Can you tell us how the lagoon will be incorporated in the overall project? Kipsan: Crystal Lagoons are indeed the world leader in creating oversized water features, and the important aspect is they provide a solution which is both environmentally friendly and highly cost effective in terms of operating costs. The lagoon is the focal centre point of the development, and at 800m long will provide a unique aspect to the development, ideal for water sports such as paddle boards, small sailing craft, rowing, swimming, windsurfing and
snorkeling. Equipment is provided by the Country Club for members to enjoy. The lagoon water is freshwater, using the Crystal Lagoons patented technology which reduces the amount of chemicals needed by more than 95%, while maintaining pristine, drinking quality water. Our CEO and senior management have visited Crystal Lagoons in other parts of the world, and the technology is proven. The company has a sophisticated telemetry system which monitors many aspects of the water remotely with an ongoing loop of filtering and adjustment. The lagoon ranges from the shallows and an artificial sand beach in front of the MahaSamutr Country Club, through to 1.5m in the areas around the edges of the lagoon, to a maximum depth of 2.4m in the middle. The bottom gently slopes to the deepest point. Russ: Your MahaSamutr Country Club sounds like the perfect playground for the very rich and famous. How much do you think it will play into the success of your project and what can you tell us about it? Kipsan: We will commence selling Country Club memberships in late 2014. With membership options beginning from less than 500,000b for a lifetime membership at our introductory pricing levels, we really hope that people will
see this as a new aspect of relaxation and enjoyment to add to their Hua Hin resort experience. The Country Club is a key element of the development, and will provide a new quality of dining, sports and recreation for the township, as well as access to all the sports and activities in the lagoon. Country Clubs are commonplace in North America, and increasingly in Asia. For likeminded individuals and families, we see the MahaSamutr Country Club as providing a sense of community and place for self-improvement, enrichment and fun for all the family. By selling memberships for life, we are creating a asset for each family to enjoy and play an active part in the Hua Hin community. Russ: I read that you have already hired a Michelin 3 starred Chef who has worked at the Four Seasons Hotel, Hong Kong. What can you tell us about the restaurants within the clubs? Kipsan: We will be unveiling full details of PACE Executive Chef Vincent Thierry’s vision for dining at MahaSamutr Country Club in the near future. What I can say now is that there will be several outlet providing all day contemporary dining; beach/lagoon side service; and the option for formal/ semi-formal function catering for family

58
or corporate functions. The design and décor will be inspired by the work of David Collins Studio, and will be a new facet to Hua Hin’s dining scene. By having several outlets, members can choose between casual dining and a more formal environment, or even having their own private function. Room service will be available for both Country Club visitors staying in the Country Club accommodation as well as for residents of the Villas at MahaSamutr Country Club. This will extend to even providing chefs and staff for functions within the Villas themselves. Russ: I understand non-residents can join the MahaSamutr Country Club. What will the joining fee be along with the monthly or yearly fee and will they have access to all the amenities that the homeowners enjoy? Kipsan: The MahaSamutr Country Club is similar to Country Clubs around the world, with a fairly sizeable member base sold on a lifetime basis to individuals, families and corporate clients. Each member (or their family) enjoys access to all Country Club facilities including MahaSamutr Lagoon, the clubhouse, sports grounds, gym, kid’s zone, library, services, restaurants and more. The entire MahaSamutr development is for Country Club members only, creating a private community. The villa portion of the asset is exclusively for Villa owners who will automatically also receive
AUG 15 - SEP 15 , 2014
Country Club membership, but the rest of the grounds are for all Country Club members and villa owners to enjoy. Membership options will start selling later this year, and start from less than 500,000b per member for a lifetime member, with several different pricing plans designed to match each member’s lifestyle, including weekday only, all access, individual, family, senior and corporate. Russ: Offering a Beach Club in addition to your lavish Country Club is truly the icing on the cake. It gives your homeowners everything they could want in a destination holiday home. What amenities and features have been designed into the beach club? Kipsan: The Beach Club is an additional benefit for Villa owners to enjoy providing dining, swimming, lockers and beach access in Hua Hin. The Beach Club is located right in the centre of Hua Hin’s main beach, and is properly set up for social entertainment and dining so this gives owners truly the best of both worlds – privacy and space at home with their own lagoon, yet still with the ability to enjoy the beach life when they choose. Russ: Finally Khun Kipsan, this is offtopic but your company is also currently constructing MahaNakhon in Bangkok which will be the Kingdom’s tallest and most luxurious high-rise and will include
the Ritz Carlton Residences. What can you tell us about this magnificent project and when do you expect completion? Kipsan: MahaNakhon is Thailand’s tallest building at 314m tall, with 77 storeys. It includes 3 main elements: The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Bangkok which are 200 condominium residences sold freehold with the services of The RitzCarlton; The Bangkok Edition Hotel, a 159 room boutique hotel operated by The RitzCarlton in the lower section of the tower; and, lifestyle retail to provide Bangkok’s leading gourmet dining experience, including Thailand’s first L’Atelier De Joël Robuchon, first VOGUE lounge, first Dean & DeLuca Gourmet Foodhall concept store and more. The condominiums are now selling starting from the 23rd floor starting from a price of approximately 260,000b per sqm or around 42m baht starting price, and we are around 65% sold already. We offer a variety of 2 – 5 bedroom residences, with a design style inspired by the work of David Collins Studio featuring the quality standards of The Ritz-Carlton. Owners enjoy the benefits of a luxury freehold residence combined with the service of the Ladies and Gentlemen of The Ritz-Carlton. Construction commenced in 2011, and we have now reached the 35th floor (as of end July 2014) with completion planned end of 2015. MahaNakhon CUBE is the retail portion of the development, and is a separate
MahaNakhon
59
building to the main MahaNakhon Tower. The CUBE features 7 floors of Bangkok’s best dining, including new to market dining concepts such as multiple Michelin star restaurant L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon which will be one of the finest restaurants in the city. Located in the heart of the Sathorn CBD directly adjacent to the Chongnonsi BTS Station, our residences bring together unique architecture, a prime location, convenience of mixed use and outstanding specification. We also provide almost daily updates for Bangkok’s landmark at www. facebook.com/mahanakhonbkk where we have more than 130,000 followers watching the construction progress. To find out more about the residences, please visit www.rcr-bangkok.com Russ: Thank you Khun Kipsan for taking time out of your very busy schedule to be with us. e have seen a lot of Italy but Sicily always remained a blank spot on our travel map. This June we were finally visiting the island in the far south of Italy. From our home in Hong Kong we set out for a one night stopover in Zurich, where we stayed in a beautiful little B&B near the town Centre called NI-MO hotel (https://hotel-nimo.ch/). The room was top, very quiet leading into a courtyard, the small balcony equipped with table, chairs, candle light and even a fur blanket for cold nights. The breakfast was 5-star and the owner a very lively, charming and accommodating lady. Taking the flight to Catania in Sicily took about 2 hours. After landing we found the usual slightly chaotic scene at the airport and the adjoining rental car pick up. Having had the chance to draw a number kept our waiting time in check and we were out of the airport after 1 ½ hours driving towards the north, namely Carruba, where we rented a villa near the beach for a week (http://www. AUG 15 - SEP 15 , 2014
villeinitalia.com/search_results/houses/ VillaPraiola.html#fold_map). The only active volcano in Europe the Etna was making our stay an even more interesting one. Towering behind us with the sea in front, it erupted almost every evening with thunderous noise and clearly visible lava eruptions. The beaches near Catania are mostly pebble beaches not ideal for swimming but the water is crystal clear. In summer the Italian are building jetties into the water, so swimming is possible also for the less experienced. We ventured into all the neighboring villages and up to Taormina, which is a jewel at this coast albeit heavily frequented by tourists and full of designer shops. The sheer amount of restaurants, boutiques, old buildings but also tourists was stunning to us. The view from the village down to the sea was incredible and almost every restaurant has a terrace facing the sea. Visiting Sicily in June was a blessing with lesser tourists in general comprised mainly by Italians from the north. We were delighted by the seafood that was served as specialty in almost all the
restaurants along the cost ‌ and not to forget about the famous Sicilian pizza, a delight of its own. The Tavola Nero wine for as little as Euro 10 in a restaurant made up for the best compliment to any food. In general we were surprised about the very moderate price levels of hotels and restaurants. As everywhere else in Italy food is the main passion of Italians and it’s a delight, simple food, delicious ingredients (best of olive oils, lemons etc.) does not require a great chef and thus we were almost never disappointed. We had probably one of the best fish ever in one of the small villages tugged along the coast, towering over a small harbor. There is no menu and you can choose the fish you like to eat in the kitchen. Prepared on a barbeque with just a bit of salt and splendid olive oil, it was heaven on earth. We also venture up on the slopes of the Etna and were greeted by a beautiful panorama and again found some small restaurant that served an amazing array of small dishes. The climate was quite agreeable, not too hot yet and therefore the fan in the room was sufficient to keep us cool at night. The villa we rented had
a generous pool, three big bedrooms a huge patio and a really generous kitchen and living area, a great base for our daily adventures into the area. After a week we took to the road again to explore more of Sicily. We drove southeast towards Ragusa traversing the more dry inner part of Sicily. There is quite some industrial farming, a number of slightly bigger towns and approaching the coast first hit a small dwelling called Scoglitti, where we found a very nice hotel right at the beach (Al Gabbiano Hotel). Most beach side villages and towns are oriented towards inland. I assume this is because of the climate, hence finding a restaurant on the beach can be an ardent task. There are a lot of new summer residences being built for Italians on the cost. They often are a bit of an eyesore and closed down just to burst with life during the months of July and August. For the rest of the year there is practically no life to it. Scoglitti is a nice village with the typical square, where people gather in the evenings. After staying for two days we drove on along the coast, sometimes cruising inland staying in Modica, a mediaeval town. We stayed in a beautifully restored old building now housing a small hotel (Grana Barocco Art Hotel & Spa) with only 6 rooms, and then set out towards the most southern 63
tip of Sicily called Portopalo a sleepy place with nice views. Its nestled on a slope towards the sea and due to the road assimilating to this landscape, similiarities to San Francisco can be found. We decided not to stay but proceed towards Noto, another mediaeval town that has a really impressive old town Centre. We stayed outside in a hotel called Corte del Sole (http:// www.lacortedelsole.it), with an excellent restaurant that featured an unbelievable view over the country side and the nearby sea. There is a natural reserve nearby and beautiful, long sandy beaches. There are no beachside restaurants in that area and for a livelier scene one has to venture a bit more north into Noto Marina, where ample of beach life is predominant. Overall we had a very good time. We were really impressed by the food, the people (Sicilians may be a bit more reserved but friendly and reliable all the same) and the many wonderful views all over the place. Sicily is definitely worth a holiday and we have only seen about 1/3 of it. About the Author: Dany is a Swiss national living in Hong Kong and has been based in Asia for 20 years. Koh Sam eT T
his month’s HOT Getaway takes us to the tropical island of Koh Samet, a small island located in the Rayong province, around 200 km Southeast of Bangkok. Technically part of Khao Laem Ya - Koh Samet National Park, Koh Samet is a popular weekend getaway for Thais and foreigners living in Bangkok, so there are dozens of beach resorts, bars, and restaurants on most beaches. It is said that it can be raining all over Thailand but if you want sunshine then Koh Samet is the place and this has been true the two times that I visited. It is one of the driest archipelagos in Thailand and gets significantly less rainfall than Rayong province even though it’s only a few kilometers offshore. Koh Samet is approximately 13.1 km2 in size and is shaped somewhat like the letter “T.” From North to South the island is 7km in length and East to west measures 4km’s at its widest point. The Island has only three roads, one links Saikaew area with Ao Noi Na, the other links Saikaew with the east and southern route. Most roads are dirt / sand tracks, Cars are very few, and Motorbikes are many and are the best way to explore the Island This Island offers white sand beaches and crystal clear water. There are actually 14 white sand beaches that are surrounded by colorful coral reefs, a favorite of snorkeler’s and scuba divers. The primary activities on Koh Samet are beach related: chilling on the beach, swimming, and engaging in water sports, such as jet skiing, snorkeling, and riding banana boats. Beach hopping via rental motorbike or songtaew is another option, as is catching a sunset on the western shore or visiting the summit where a couple of attractions are located: a well once thought to contain pirate booty and castings of the Buddha’s footprint. The island is famous among Thais as the setting for a story by their

most beloved poet, Sunthorn Phu, who was a native of Rayong province. The main character, Phra Arpaimanee, travels with his flute around Thailand until he’s captured by a ravenous giantess. After watching her chomp a buffalo’s head off, he manages to escape by lulling her to sleep with his entrancing flute music. He then uses his magical flute to win over the heart of a beautiful mermaid. The pair marry and live happily ever after with a son, Sutakorn, who incidentally has the body of a horse and head of a dragon. An imposing statue of the giantess meets all who arrive at Nadan pier, and at the far southern end of Haad Sai Kaew, a photo next to decaying statues of Phra Arpaimanee and the mermaid is obligatory for all Thai visitors. If you’re looking to party the beaches at Haad Sai Kaew, Ao Hin Khok and Ao Phai are the places to be. Though they can get crowded at any time, these northern beaches turn into thumping strips of nightlife on Fridays and Saturdays when boatloads of Thais converge here. Even so, Samet’s nightlife isn’t seedy like some parts of Phuket and Pattaya. Think fire-spinning shows, cushions on the sand, live music and a few techno or hip hop DJs. On the opposite side of the scale, Ao Wong Duen beach offers a family-friendly atmosphere with plenty of restaurants and other conveniences to go with a range of quality midrange resorts. If you are seeking solitude you should consider Nuan Bungalows on Ao Nuan. This resort keeps things simple. It has an (almost) private beach. Tourists walking the coastal trail do pass through (and often stop to swim), but this does not really detract from

the pleasantness of this little cove. Mid-week prices range from approximately 800 baht to 3,000 baht per night. Though the beach at Ao Noi Na on the north coast isn’t as dazzling as those on the eastern side a new resort called Pandora receives rave reviews on trip advisor. If you are looking for the best the island has to offer then Paradee Resort on Ao Kiu Na Nok is for you. Everything here is just over the top. From the ride to the resort in their private jetboat to being welcomed by the entire staff and hotel manager at the beautiful beach in the resort. The rooms are stunningly designed as are all the facilities. As always, do your homework on-line to find the right accommodation for the type of holiday you desire. Getting there: If you don’t have a private car we suggest taking the first class Suvarnabhum Airport VIP bus (305 baht) and then from the airport arrange a taxi to the Ban Phe pier in Rayong (1,600 to 2,000 baht). Once in Ranong there are two ways to get to the island, speedboat or ferry. The ferry boat costs between 100 to 150 baht per person and takes 40 minutes. If you don’t want to worry about the ferry schedule you can hire a speedboat to take you across. It’s much more convenient and the price is 2,000 baht per trip one-way. AUG 15 - SEP 15 , 2014
