Dear Reader

Welcome to Volume 2 Issue 5 of HOT Hua Hin Magazine. For the last six issues, each of our meticulously chosen covers have shown a woman from the back, wearing swim attire and in a tropical setting. We have received a lot of feedback from our readers asking why is the woman always shown from the back? This issue we’re pleased to break that cycle with the Anantara Resort and Spa in Hua Hin as the backdrop for our May cover photo-shoot.

Details are on page 10. This month we inaugurate a new monthly column called HOT Hua Hin Executive’s where each month we get to know a different Hua Hin business leader. This month we put the GM of the AMARI Resort on the hot seat, that’s on page 16. On the 3rd & 4th of May a group of like-minded dog lover’s along with this publication put on the first Hua Hin Street Dog Lovers Carnival to raise money for Hua Hin’s many street dogs in need, page 18. Our HOT Getaway takes us to Khao Yai, approximately 5 hours North East of Hua Hin by car. Largely known for its National Park (the most popular in Thailand), it has many other charming qualities. Find out what to see and do on page 22. The 2014 Asian Beach Polo Championship once again took place on the beach in front of Hua Hin’s InterContinental Resort followed by a lively dinner party, pictures and story on page 36. Our HOT Food Review takes us back to the Anantara where we were treated to an exceptional meal at their Baan Thalia restaurant that was talked about for days, find out why on page 34. On the 5th of this month Hua Hin was once again the center of the Thai Universe as the King made a special appearance to his subjects on the auspicious occasion of Coronation Day. We at HOT Hua Hin along with all Thai’s everywhere send our best wishes to the King on this special occasion. Long Live The King

tarting with this issue we begin a new monthly column featuring a fixed set of questions posed to a prominent local Hua Hin business person. The purpose is to find out what they like most about Hua Hin, some of their favorite local haunts and a few more surprising facts that you might not have guessed. We inaugurate this regular column with the General Manager of the Amari Hua Hin, Mr. Christoph Leonhard. What is your full name? And age? • Christoph Leonhard and 41 years What is your current Job Position? • General Manager of Amari Hua Hin

seafood restaurant (used to be even more rustic in its original location) with fantastic food. Nobody beats the taste and quality of Sopa! What do you like to do in your free time and why? • Relaxing by the pool with a glass of wine, having friends around. And getting engaged in charity projects through the Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin and other organizations. Whoever can pick up and read this magazine can count themselves very lucky to be in this position, and it is our obligation to give back to the community and to look after the less fortunate ones.

What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? • Not much except the “standards”: the Royal Palace, The Railway Station and I was familiar with Market Village

What would you recommend to new comers to do in Hua Hin? And Why? • Since I hate sand (Sopa Seafood is on the beach yet in safe distance to the sand…) don’t expect any recommendations involving the beach. One of my favorite outings is to the Hua Hin Hills Winery: a bottle of White Shiraz and the cold cut platter, eventually followed by a slice of cheese cake: can’t get better than that.

What do you like most about your profession? • Creating happiness for guests and team members alike.

What do you like to do in your free time? And why? • Same as the above

What do you like the least about your profession? • Everything is the hotel’s fault. Bad weather? Yes, we ordered that. Traffic on the way to Hua Hin? Our mistake! Phone gone? Of course the maid stole it from the room (but was later found by a housekeeping attendant in the public toilet).

The Joker Question: Do you get angry often and if so what makes you angry? • Not really. I think I’m a pretty calm person, as I believe that there is always a way to get to a win-win situation. Sometimes the way things happens to be a bit bumpy or hidden or the “win” might not be as high as expected or hoped for.

How long have you lived in Hua Hin? • About a year and a half now, since January 2013

What do you like most about life in Hua Hin? • Hua Hin is a lovely small fishing town that has still kept its “old world charm” despite its rapid expansion over the past years. It has become a very popular weekend destination for ‘Bangkokians’ and fashionable place to have a weekend/holiday condo. At the same time, because of its laid-back and cozy atmosphere, Hua Hin has also become home to many foreign retirees: either just escaping the cold European winter months or completely adjusting to the “Thai way of life”.

Drawing: This is how I think I look like. ( A stick figure will do) • Better not. While I love arts and collect paintings, I’m totally unable to draw; I can’t even underline something properly!

What is your favorite Restaurant locally and why? • Sopa Seafood at the end of Khao Takiab. It is a simple, local

W

ith Hua Hin’s hot season in full swing our HOT Getaway this month takes us to a cooler part of Thailand located approximately two hours north east of Bangkok, our destination, Khao Yai. The climate here is much more comfortable, despite being so near the sweltering capital and as such it’s a popular weekend destination for city dwellers looking for a family friendly destination. An added bonus is that there is so much to see and do here. Khao Yai is home to Thailand’s second largest and most popular national park covering more than 2,000 square kilometers and is home to a wide range of wildlife including Asiatic black bears, Asian elephants, Indochinese tigers and great hornbills. Elephants and macaques are commonly sighted, even on brief drives through the mountains. In the evening, take a night safari in a jeep to see the local wildlife coming or see the bat’s flying out of the caves as the sun starts to set. Parts of the national park are designated UNESCO World Heritage sites. There are plenty of easy hikes to nearby waterfalls that the entire family can enjoy. A must see is Heo Suwat waterfall which was made famous in the 2000 film The Beach, starring a young Leonardo DiCaprio. For the experienced trailblazers there are also more advanced trails that can take days to traverse. For us Hua Hin’ians, when we think of Thai wine we most often think of the Hua Hin Vineyard located nearby but most of Thailand’s vineyards are actually located in or near the Khao Yai National Park. Three wineries not May 15 - Jun 15 , 2014

to miss include;

Kirimaya Golf Resort

The GranMonte Family Vineyard which is located in the beautiful Asoke Valley area of Khao Yai National Park. GranMonte produces Syrah and Chenin Blanc wines, as well as grape juices, grape jams, raisins, homemade cookies and even grapes by the kilo. Check out their shop for all their products. Don’t miss eating at the GranMonte restaurant either, the food is superb and of course they serve their own wines. There’s also a wonderful guest house you can stay at, for a reasonable charge per night, which overlooks the stunning vineyards and includes breakfast for two and discounted green fees at Khao Yai Golf Club. The Village Farm is located on the outskirts of Khao Yai and near Baan Pai Ngam village. The farm and vineyard is on 80 acres of land and not only grows grapes and makes wine, but also produces flowers and exotic fruits.

24

The Village Farm has a tour around its winery, as well as offers accommodation in several chalet-style houses. There’s

even a spa where you can experience wine hydrotherapy, body scrubs and Thai and Swedish massage, all while enjoying the wineries stunning natural beauty. The on-site restaurant is located in a lovely old barn, thus “The Old Barn” name, and serves traditional and more modern Thai and western foods, using fresh and often home-grown ingredients. One of the oldest vineyards in Thailand is the PB-Valley Khao Yai Winery, having been open since 1989. Here they grow a variety of grapes from all over the world. Their products include Shiraz, Chenin Blanc and Rose wines. A motorized train takes you throughout the vineyard to tour and don’t miss eating at the Great Hornbill Grill Restaurant. They serve European and American food (the fish and chips is excellent) and their pizzas from their wood-burning stove are simply delicious. Yum!!! The vineyard also runs a small resort, with cute little cabins nestled among the trees and on the edge of the vineyard, with the mountains beyond. Imagine waking up in the morning and looking out over that. For the golfer, Khao Yai offers many scenic and enjoyable courses; The Sir James Golf Course at Forest Hills Country Club is well designed so that it is enjoyable and challenging at the same time. The closet course on the way from Bangkok to the Khao Yai National Park, Sir James is a fine parkland course and golf resort. The Khao Yai Golf Club is a Jack Nicklaus designed mountain course situated between 2 valleys in the mountains on a

Haew Suwat Waterfall

450 rai land parcel just outside the Khao Yai National Park. There are stunning views over the surrounding hills from everywhere on the golf course, especially the back nine. The Kirimaya Golf Resort & Spa is an 18-hole championship golf course also designed by Jack Nicklaus. The course ranges from 4,875 yards (ladies) to an incredible 7,115 yards (tournament) and with its single-track layout, golfers feel as if they are the only ones on the entire course. Mountain Creek Golf Resort and Residence is a 27-hole golf course located past the Khao Yai National Park and is Thailand’s only Steve Ballesteros designed golf course. The Panorama Golf and Country Club is on the way to Khao Yai National Park and can be reached either from Bangkok or Korat. The relatively long driving time is rewarded by the golf course which has been built partly through the local virgin forest and partly on a bluff overlooking the whole Khao Yai valley.

The Castle

Rancho Charnvee is an 18-hole layout in the Khao Yai National Park area. The rather flat Bob McFarland resort course is fun to play and caters to golfers of all abilities and as with other Khao Yai golf courses, views from the course are often stunning. Toscana Valley is a challenging course located in a deep valley of the world heritage site of Khao Yai National Park. An excellent setting for a golf club, Toscana Valley compliments the Khao Yai backdrop and, save for the palm trees, resembles the environment of Tuscany Italy.

The Castle

If shopping is more your thing then Khao Yai has you covered there too. At Primo Posto you can Transport yourself halfway around the world and lose yourself in the embrace of a Tuscan village for a day. Primo Posto is a concept open-air mall with adobe-coloured shophouses fashioned in the style of the Italian countryside, with wrought-iron touches, colourful wood shutters, terracotta tiled roofs and a manicured flower garden. This is as much an attraction as a shopping mall.

Palio Khao Yai Similar in architectural style, but much bigger in scale is Palio Khao Yai. Here you’ll find over 120 shops offering a diverse range of merchandise. The lovely vine-covered, adobe-coloured buildings and landscaped gardens recreate the feel of a bucolic Tuscan village. If you happen to fancy brand-name leather bags, shoes or fashion accessories while in Khao Yai – or simply need a place to hide from midday heat – the Outlet Village is the right place to go. The 127 shops here offer a diverse range of local and imported brands, including Bossini, Lacoste, Esprit, Valentino Rudy, Dapper and G2000, to name just a few. Better yet,

since this is an outlet mall, find up to 70% discount on selected items every day. Being up in the Mountains with lots of surrounding space, Khao Yai sort of has a cowboy feel to it. Steak restaurants are very popular but if you’re not a meat eater don’t worry as this town is filled to the brim with restaurants offering all food types and catering to all budgets. With all that Khao Yai has to offer as well as its relative close proximity to Bangkok it’s no wonder it is in the middle of a building boom. New developments are popping up everywhere in all price ranges although the mid and upper end of

the market seems to be most prevalent. After spending a day driving around you’ll be hard pressed to decide who’s booming more, Khao Yai or Hua Hin. Personally I think it’s too close to call. If you haven’t been to Khao Yai yet, put it on your travel list. Spend at least three days there with a full day reserved for the National Park. Chances are good that it will become one of your favorite places in Thailand, as it has for me. Getting there. By private car it’s approximately 5 hours North East of Hua Hin. From Bangkok you can take a big bus, mini bus or train with travel times varying.

TOSCANA VALLEY T

oscana Valley, located in Khao Yai, has replicated the beauty of Italy’s Tuscany architecture and sweeping vistas transplanting them next to the World Heritage Khao Yai National Park. As a bonus you get to breath in the 7th best ozone in the World. When looking for a place to stay Khao Yai, Toscana Valley is a great choice. They offer two different hotels on the large Toscana Valley Estate. The Hotel La Casetta has 45 rooms with 3 different room types. You can have a room facing the mountains, the garden or you can have a loft room that sleeps 4. Standard room rates range from 6,900 to 8,900++ baht per night. Town Square Suites also have 3 different room types that offer Town, Valley or Mountain Views. Here the rooms are larger and more expensive with prices ranging from 7,900 to 11,900++ per night. In addition to the views and stunning architecture guests can enjoy the Toscana Valley Golf Course as well as their spa, swimming pool and bicycle rentals. For reservations you can call 084 683 655 or email at rsvn@ toscanavalley.com For directions you can call the hotel at 044 756 555 or 044 756 556.

Baan Thalia

Italian Fo od Nirvana! A

nantara Hua Hin’s Italian restaurant Baan Thalia is nestled in the inner tropical courtyard of the hotel and follows the same impeccable décor as the rest of the hotel. It seems like every small detail in this restaurant has been thought of carefully by renowned designer Bill Bensley, making this small restaurant feel exclusive yet cozy in a blend of modern and Thai design. We were so excited to eat here, that for once the entire team at HOT Hua Hin Magazine had some excuse or another to join this dinner. We were hosted by Khun Pooky; Sales & Public Relations Manager, and the hotel’s Executive Chef Hans Peter Held who served us with an Italian feast and good company that will not be forgotten for some time. The restaurant serves Italian classics with a twist and some new fusion dishes, and is also known for offering

an extensive wine menu. We started off the dinner with visiting the restaurants Antipasti buffet at an affordable 700++per person, full of the Chef’s selection of the best Italian cured and pickled meats and tradition antipasto dishes. If you love Salami’s and the like this is your place. I would have happily spent the whole evening selecting between Salami’s, Beef Carpaccio’s , Parma Ham’s, Cheese’s and breads to die for. This in itself is a great meal. The bread was exceptional and I would easily say the best bread I have ever had in Hua Hin up to now. The Antipasti was quickly followed by starters; Marinated Fresh Sea Bass (420++) bound with capers, wild lemon thyme, orange and a salad of confit tomatoes and the dish of Broth of Roma Tomatoes (320++) served with king crab meat, basil and avocado. The Sea Bass was a lovely fresh dish for a hot day, bursting with flavor and crunch from the fresh vegetables. The broth of Roma Tomatoes was like no Tomato soup

I have ever tasted; completely clear in consistency and apparently very time consuming to prepare. The soup has a nice fresh acidic twang to it with the condiments arranged almost like a piece of artwork under the soup. Amazing! The main dishes served were a traditional beef Lasagna ( 460++), Risotto Tom Yam Gung (640++), Butter Fish Pave (790++) and last but not least Beef Tenderloin Fillet “Baan Thalia” (1150++). The Lasagna was deliciously creamy with just the right amount of each ingredient. The Risotto Tom Yam Gung, a Thai spiceinfused rissotto with shrimp was almost completly gobbled up by a colleague of mine who shall not be named. The dish combines the Italian way of cooking with some Thai flavors infused into a nice Thai-Italian fusion dish. The star of the table was the Butter Fish Pave roasted in pancetta and crispy angel-hair pasta with Foie Gras sauce. The dish was yet another proof of the talents of the chefs;

beautifully plated with a crunchy angel hair pasta crust and soft fish sprinkled with a delicious creamy Foie Gras sauce. Yum! The Beef Tenderloin Fillet “Baan Thalia” is the Chef’s specialty and is cooked with fresh rosemary which completly melted in my mouth. The evening ended with Chocolate Lava (340++) a dark chocolate cake dessert with a warm liquid chocolate center topped with pistachio ice cream. I am embarrassed to admit but I ate most of it. Especially embarrassing since there were two plates of this dessert and I ate pretty much both of them. The Tiramisu (280++) a classic Italian coffee and mascarpone crème dessert was delicious but was secretly eaten by someone else whist I attacked the Chocolate Lava. I did manage a spoonful and I found it lighter than most Tiramisu’s and deserving ones full attention. HOT Score: The favorite for me was the Antipasti and as a matter of fact I will soon be back to sample this spread as I think it makes for a great evening highlight. Close second came the Italian soup for its fresh taste and the melt in your mouth Beef Tenderloin Fillet “Baan Thalia”. And I think judging by the clean plate of my Chocolate Lava dessert, correction two clean plates that this is a dessert not to be missed. If you want to blow someone’s socks off, treat them to this beautiful restaurant and its beautifully delicious food. At the end it was the Macau team who prevailed and rode to victory

In sweltering heat the event started with the opening parade along the beach and then young Thai polo players took to the field and played a special Youth Polo match which amazed fans with their quality of play. The semi-finals were up next which saw Thailand face off with France. Thailand was strong and put up a good battle but at the end it was France who dominated the match and won the 3rd place honors. The final showdown for first and second place was between Macau and Hong Kong. Fans saw these two very strong teams confront each other on the field in a hard fought contest. At the end it was the Macau team who prevailed and rode to victory with a score of 7 to 3 over Hong Kong winning the Princess PA’s Cup. The matches were divided into 7-minute periods called chukkers. To the appreciation of everyone involved, the horses were changed every chukker due to the day’s high heat and the extreme demands that were put on the ponies.

The Show on stage at Sweet Old Night Gala Dinner

Khun Proudputh Liptapanlop

After the polo matches the large festive crowd enjoyed a fashion show on horseback and then a couple of good oldfashioned horse races between local Hua Hin beach ponies. Guests were allowed to bet on the horses with money received from losing bets donated to charity. The fun-filled day concluded with a dinner party on the lawn of the InterContinental Hua Hin where the theme was “Hua Hin Sweet Old Days”. Guests were treated to performances that brought back the charm of Hua Hin in the 1920’s. At the conclusion of the evening there was an auction overseen by Khun Proudputh Liptapanlop, M.D. of the InterContinental Resort Hua Hin that saw heavy bidding on 3 magnificent paintings depicting different areas of Hua Hin. The 3 winning bidders paid a total of 850,000 baht with all monies again donated to the Princess’s charity. The Asian Beach Polo Championship has become an annual event at the InterContinental Hua Hin since 2010. The tournament is the centre of attention for celebrities, members of the local community and socialites who love a thrilling polo match and who enjoy a sophisticated social gathering.

centara’s world masters Golf championship

Hua Hin, the renowned tourism destination on the Gulf of Thailand that was named 2014 golf destination of the year for Asia and Australia, is to host a world amateur tournament in June for club golfers aged 35 and over. The Centara World Masters Golf Championship, to be held at four courses near Hua Hin from June 15 to 21, is expected to attract more than 600 golfers from around the world. The tournament, which will be played in 15 age and handicap divisions, will adopt the same format as the Mitsubishi World Masters, an amateur event that has been held on the Gold Coast in Australia for the past 18 years. Peter McCarthy, the principal of Go Golfing, who has conducted the weeklong event in Australia since its inception, has teamed up with Golfasian, a leading Bangkok-based inbound tour operator, and Centara Hotels and Resorts to create the Centara World Masters Golf Championship at the holiday destination of the Thai Royal family. Hua Hin became only the second region (rather than a country) to receive the International Association of Golf Tourism Operators’ award as golf destination of the year for Asia and Australasia. The award was previously won by Pattaya, also in Thailand, in 2012. Hua Hin has seven golf courses, including two of the best in Thailand

– Black Mountain and Banyan – as well as numerous cultural and tourism attractions. In the past five years it has become one of Asia’s most popular golf tourism destinations. Royal Hua Hin Golf Club established in 1924, was the first golf course in Thailand. The Centara World Masters, to be held at four leading courses, is open to golfers aged 35 and over. The four-round stableford tournament will be played in 15 age and handicap divisions that ensure golfers of a similar age and standard play together. Prizes valued at more than $30,000 will be given away at the final night gala dinner. The tournament is open to all amateur golfers aged over 35 with an official handicap. “The Mitsubishi World Masters has been such a huge success in Australia, attracting players from all around the world, that we wanted to take the format to Asia,” Peter McCarthy said this week. “Hua Hin is a perfect golf destination, with great courses, beaches and other attractions. “Black Mountain has been named best course in Thailand for each of the past three years and is an awesome golf experience. Banyan was named best new course in Asia in 2009, has been in the top three in Thailand for several years and its clubhouse was voted best in Asia for 2013 and again for 2014.

“The other two courses where the tournament will be played, Majestic Creek and Imperial Lake View, are beautifully presented and highly enjoyable layouts that will please all participants. “People like these events because they are much more than golf tournaments,” he explains. “There are lively social and entertainment events every night. In Hua Hin, international acts will be a highlight at the welcome and farewell celebrations, while Thailand’s biggest 19th hole will move each night to stunning rooftop, beach, and poolside settings. A decadent farewell dinner will cap off the fun-filled week.” Accommodation will be at the Centara Grand Beach Resort and Banyan Resort, Hua Hin. “The Centara World Masters will give golfers a great insight into golf in Thailand, especially those who also take a pre or post-tournament tour option.” For more details, visit www. T

he HOT Hua Hin Team was invited to try the treatments at the Sherezade Hammam & Spa, The Spa is located in the beautiful Villa Maroc Resort in Pranburi. The resort and Spa is styled and designed following the distinctive architecture of Morocco. I was told the owners travelled to Morocco and feel in love with the architecture and lifestyle and designed the Resort in this style for that reason. The Pranburi area has been a long time favorite of mine, a place to get away from the relative hustle bustle of Hua Hin Town. The beaches are empty and vast and there is many cute cafes and hang outs for those that love beach living. In the midst of all this sits the Oasis of Villa Maroc, distinctive in its style but yet somehow managing to fit in without looking out of place. It’s not only the hotel that is fashioned in Moroccan style, the Sherezade Hammam & Spa sits in a beautiful & traditional Arabic mosaic courtyard. After entering the Spa you are greeted with a cool mint drink and luxurious foot scrub by the wonderful staff at the Sherezade. After the heat it is nice to enter a dark and cool treatment room to change into a comfortable robe. Little did I know that I would have to relinquish the robe very soon after that. The treatment chosen for me on that day was 30 minute Hammam steam room treat, a traditional Moroccan scrub followed by a back & shoulder massage. The Spa teatments are built around the very traditional Hammam experience. A Hammam is an important part of Moroccan culture and life. It is traditional for families to visit their local Hammam at least once a week, and spend a few hours socializing and cleansing for the

47

coming week. In Morocco although conservative in dress code, in the Hammam normally a no clothes dress code is adhered to. Of course the men and women are in separate areas but amongst their own gender there is generally no shame or embarrassment with mingling with people in the nude. In Sherezade Spa you can choose to wear discreet disposable underwear if you so choose or go au natural, it’s your choice. The large Hammam room is stunning with a domed ceiling filled with steam and geomatric holes in the ceiling to let light into the otherwise dim room. The room is lined by small fountains with hot, medium warm and cold water. Small buckets are displayed so you cans plash around as much as you want during the steam process. There is also a bed in the middle of the room if you wish to rest. Then you are left alone for 30 minutes to relax or splash depending what you feel like doing. I of course had to splash, a lot.. The hot steam opens all your pores and cleans out all the toxins from your body making you feel clean and relaxed . The Hammam

is the Spa’s most popular treatment and probably one of the only truly Hammam experiences in our fair shores. After 30 minutes my therapist entered the room and gave me the best all body scrub I have had for a long time. There is nothing wishy-washy about this Moroccan treatment. The scrub is not a quick process but a very thorough cleanse of all dead skin with a traditional lopha and special cleansing soap. I haven’t felt so clean in years. Walking out I smelled and feelt as good as a new born baby. Tingling from head to foot after the Hammam, I was moved to the cool treatment room for the last part of my treatment. A deeply relaxing back and shoulder massage followed, and all you wanted after that was to stay in that room for the rest of the day snoozing away with the door locked. To be honest at this point you are so relaxed that you wouldn’t say a word even though the therapist folded you like a pretzel, which she didn’t. With just the perfect massage pressure all my aches and pains were massaged away and I was left ready for a very long nap.

The massage was a very nice end to an unuasual but very nice Spa treatment. The HOT Score: The best thing about the Spa is the beauty of the building and the Moroccan decorations especially the very ethereal Hammam. This is like straight of a imaginary Moroccan version of the Lord of The rings edition, if you maybe can imagine that. Although I really liked everything about this Spa experience I loved the scrub the most! This is how it should be done. Once a month it should be compulsory to have all your pollution scrubbed out in this exotic steam room, leaving you ready to go out as fresh as the day you were born. The people in Morocco and the owners of Villa Maroc got a good thing going with the hammam lifestyle. n the April issue I boldly declared I was going to start a six month boot camp at @Lectic Fitness together with its owner Kim Falcon. I was committed to improving my energy, health and maybe get rid of my kangaroo pouch which stubbornly hangs around my mid rift. I was even given an exercise plan by Kim Falcon, but then he had to go away for a few weeks…

If you want to follow the exercise schedule I am following, here are the basics: - Bring a bottle of water to hydrate whilst exercising - Work out on weights 2 times a week and the third in a week take a Zumba or a Spin class (the last instruction I am choosing to ignore at the moment, tell no one)

I was set with things to do at the gym, in possession of two gym buddies, had a happening workout gym gear and airconditioned gym at my disposal. What did I do? I spent two weeks zooming past the gym and then tagging on Facebook that I had been in gym when actually I was 50 meters away on a fast moving bike. For my birthday my encouraging friends even bought me gym gear and did this help? No. Once I even got my butt to the gym in full gear and spent a full 10 minutes drinking a smoothie and watching people exercise, only to decide that I was hungry and “surely I needed sustenance to work out?”. Twenty sushis and five Soi’s down the road, I was too full to exercise. It took the return of Kim, and call that went something like this “Stop explaining! What time are you going to be here?”, to finally get me started. So now I really have started. To punish me (I am sure) Kim has revised my work out regime to include a full weight work out that can be done relatively fast to fit my busy lifestyle but yet get me fit on top of a once weekly exercise class.

On Weight exercise days- do 2 repetitions of each weight exercise routine x 15. (with a short break in between the two repetions) 1) 10-15 minute warm up ( Threadmill, Cross Trainer or bike) 2) Pull Down machine (works Upper arms) 3) Back Extension (works back and buttocks) 4) Inclined Chest press with dumbbells (chest) 5) Squats (buttocks and legs) 6) Dumbbell Side Lift (back arms) 7) Abdominal Crunch (Abdominals) 8) Abductor Inner Thigh 9) Abductor Outer Thigh 10) Stretches 11) Finish of with step 1 again Note weights should be adjusted according to fitness level.

My first work out together with Kim proved how bad my fitness levels really are. I was instructed to start with ten minutes on the Cross trainer machine to warm up. I did about five minutes and was wheezing and had to stop. So the cross trainer warm up had to be modified to 5 minutes, with a weekly increase as my fitness levels improve. I have renamed the cross trainer the Hell machine. I have also learned that if you can talk easily on the treadmill or cross trainer this probably means you are not having the resistance level high enough. This I soon found out during my work out with Kim when I heard the command : “If you can talk you are not working hard enough!”. May 15 - Jun 15 , 2014

I have now followed this routine religiously and although am not actually 10 kilos lighter yet, but I do notice the immediate result of going to gym in the form of reduction of my stress levels. Right now I am motivated to go the Gym due to the air-conditioning and the fear of Kim finding out. On a serious note I am now off the slacker mood and back to the “Just Do it” attitude. It does help that I have supportive friends and sometimes I just have to go, instead of contemplating going to gym. Going to Gym tonight.... Maybe I’ll see you there. I am the one furiously fiddling with the treadmill incline & speed buttons. *Ask staff at the Gym to guide you to the correct machines for each muscle group or get a trainer.

Starting a new business (This is the 2nd part of Dany Heyer’s 2 part story on starting a new business. Part 1 was published in our April 15th, 2014 issue of HOT Hua Hin.)

By Dany Heyer 58

T

he usual assumption is that a new business will turn in a loss in the first year, break-even in the 2nd year and start to yield profits from the 3rd year onwards. This may be wishful thinking. What most entrepreneurs ignore is that their market has the possibility to turn volatile very quickly. Historical examples include the Asian crisis, SARS epidemic and the 2008 financial crisis. Additionally, they can be subjected to a completely un-seen adversity such as key staff leaving, fraud, loss of agency, product failure etc. which can strip the company of sales in an instant. The old saying hoping for the best but expecting the worst is a prudent approach. Of course an entrepreneur has to be optimistic and dynamic but caution is an essential element as well. One of the big dangers lurking is the belief that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. Many new startups are venturing into a business they have no experience in, no talent for or core competence. Yes it is true; one can outsource, hire specialists and of course learn, but this comes at a great cost. To start a business where core competence exists will eliminate many of the risks. To venture into an entirely new business is a minefield that takes time to circumnavigate. I have seen it too many times that accountants ventured into the marketing field, buyers become traders etc. however reality sets in soon. Trades need to be learned over time and experience is an essential element besides creativity, entrepreneurship, May 15 - Jun 15 , 2014

managerial talents, conceptual and strategic thinking and above all salesmanship. Another area of importance is accounting. Not only will it facilitate the relationship with all stakeholders but it provides a diligent businessman with valuable information that helps to steer the business. This combined with an intelligent IT system will give the startup transparency, and tools to succeed. There are many aspects that will benefit: taxation, valuation of the company, loans from bank, shareholder information, stock rotation, cash flow, profitability per item, sales per item, sales per category, sales per customer group and so on. A good Accounting and IT system is an extremely important foundation to grow the business successfully. Many entrepreneurs put all their efforts into sales without knowing where they are heading to, which items are contributing positively to the gross profit and how cash flow is derived. Of course, without sales there is no success hence you will either have to be a good and convincing sales person or hire talented staff and do excellent marketing to create sales. So in that sense, sales is the most important element but NOT the only one. Do not overlook the other components as mentioned previously. You also have to familiarize yourself with the laws of the country. Especially with regards to your duties i.e. auditing, tax, sales tax, social welfare payments and many others. To have a good accountant (in house or contracted out) can save you a lot of pain and money later on.

Last but not least, do pay some attention to insurance, this may be a lifesaver. Besides all the compulsory insurances you will have to have there are some I would highly recommend, those include third party liability, product liability & fire insurance. Keep in mind that insurances are not really important to cover small losses but they should protect your business in case of a catastrophic event that may otherwise break your backbone. To establish one’s own business is one of the most rewarding projects, provided that all is well prepared and planned with a portion of luck on standby. I have been dreaming of my own business since I was 20 years old and it took me 25 years to make my dream come true. Yes, it was tough in the beginning and it comprised of a lot of sleepless nights, sweat and tears but the result is just absolutely outrageous: to be my own boss, to determine my own faith, put all my philosophies in place and take charge and responsibility is the reward. Wishing you luck and determination in your venture.
