Welcome to Issue 2, Volume 4. Sports is big news in Hua Hin this month with the opening of the True Arena Hua Hin Sports Complex. First up we invite you to meet Khun Virapol “Kai” Cholvibul, General Manager of True Arena, that’s on page 10. Anyone who has spent some time in Hua Hin knows who Lizzy is. She’s Hua Hin’s original Diva and the founder of her Multi Cultural Community. MCC as it’s known is a charitable organization and one of the ways it raises money is from her bi-monthly MCC Gala Dinners. On January 28th Khun Lizzy celebrated her third anniversary off MCC in style with fireworks and a record 254 registered guests. If you weren’t there, see what you missed on page 32. As mentioned, sports are big in Hua Hin and this month we take you to the Fed Cup which was hosted by True Arena Hua Hin. The Fed Cup is the World Cup of Tennis for women tennis players with over 100 nations participating. The best female tennis players from 8 Countries descended on Hua Hin and you can read all about it on page on 36. “Wow, just wow”. That is how one Hua Hin resident felt after taking a tour of the fitness facilities inside the new True Arena Hua Hin. This month we’re happy to report that True is open for membership and on page 40 we take you inside and outside of this amazing sports complex. The Amari Hua Hin Resort’s Shoreline Beach Club is back in business after being closed for several months to accommodate an extensive remodel. We’re happy to report that it is better than ever with a revamped menu and a new 15 X 5-meter ocean front swimming pool. Cool yourself on page 46. Next up are four stories on not what happened, but what’s going to happen, and they are big! On page 50 read about the True Thailand Classic golf tournament returning to the Black Mountain Golf Course starting on March 10th. The True Thailand Classic is both an Asian and European Tour sanctioned event and brings the most prize money of any golf tournament in Thailand. On page 52 we entice you to Chiang Mai for their upcoming Thailand International Balloon Festival. Held on March 4th & 5th and in their ninth year this festival just get bigger and bigger. On page 56 we take you to Pattaya for the upcoming Queen’s Cup Pink Polo Tournament, held yearly at the 2,000 rai Thailand Equestrian Club. This year happening on the 27th of February, the equestrian community as well as the glitterati of Thailand will have its eyes fixed again on this enthralling grand sport, all in the name of charity. And finally on page 70 we bring you to Bangkok in preparation for another polo tournament but this time instead of riding horses the polo players are on the backs of Elephants. The 14th annual Anantara’s King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament takes place from March 10th to the 13th. This much loved and internationally followed tournament donates all the money raised to Elephant Charities, that’s on page 70. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month. As always, thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

S

earching thru the reviews on Trip Advisor for a new (for me) restaurant to dine, I came across the following review; “The restaurant overlooking the gulf of Thailand is a perfect place to visit for amazing views over the sea. On a good day you may almost see Pattaya. The food matches the views. The missus and me shared a Chateaubriand cooked to perfection. The day we visited, they offered truffle fries as a special. I never had it before, but both of us found it addictive. Prices are not on the cheap side but appropriate. So if you want a (romantic) outstanding dinner, that is your place”. The restaurant they were talking about was Hua Hin’s Beach Café, located next to the beach in front of the yellow high rise building Condo Chain. Near and opposite to the Bangkok Hospital. With a review like that we had to give the Beach Cafe a try. We did and were lucky enough to run into the owner, Christian Rasp. Chris showed us their new menu and told us they have taken the most popular “specials” over the past few years and incorporated them into their everyday menu. We asked him what his “best sellers” were and he said that for appetizers they were definitely the Shrimp Cocktail and their Tuna Salad and Pineapple. For the main course he said their Australian tenderloin is by far their most popular. Another big seller he said was their Braised Lamb Shank “Ossobucco” where they marinate the meat for two full days. Other popular dishes are their Calamari and Lobster Spaghetti. We started our meal with a recommendation of Chris’s which was the Shrimp Cocktail. Chris explained that the cocktail sauce was his personal recipe and contains 8 ingredients, the last being a splash of brandy. The shrimp cocktail arrived and tasted wonderful. The shrimp were fresh, cold, firm and dipped into the cocktail sauce, delightful, with a bit of a kick. The other Appetizer’s ordered were the salmon salad which consisted of smoked salmon, greens and onions all beautifully presented and the Scallops with Spinach in Garlic Butter. Being a big garlic fan I was not disappointed. The scallops were fresh and the spinach abated just a bit of the bite of the garlic. Our main courses consisted of their Australian Rib Eye, Ossobucco and the Lobster Spaghetti. My Rib Eye was cooked on their BBQ and was mildly seasoned and cooked to perfection. There were many choices of sides and sauces. I chose a jacket potato and a pepper sauce to accompany my steak. The Ossobucco, a classic Milanese dish, after being marinated for two days and cooked in a rich broth that included

tomatoes and wine was full of flavor and amazingly tender. After tasting the Lobster Spaghetti, it was easy to see why it was one of the Beach Café’s best sellers. Tender chunks of Rock Lobster in a tomato parsley sauce over pasta al dente, Splendido! The beach Café is also open for lunch with a full menu and is the perfect place to while away the hours with great food, a glass of wine or a cold beer while you enjoy the ocean views and take in the sights of the Kite boarders who are flying right in front of you. For those who would like to have a party on the beach but don’t want to pay the 5-star beachfront hotel prices, the Beach Café is available for private parties in any budget range. Weddings, company parties or anniversary parties on the beach are all happily arranged. Recently they catered a wedding for 150 guests with a beach Chapel in front of their restaurant. It is the unfortunate norm that if you have a view restaurant the food is usually not that great, it’s the view that sells. And the restaurants with the greatest food don’t usually have the nicest view. At the Beach Café however, the spectacular view and fantastic food are perfectly wed. Saving the last dance for New Year

(Editor’s Note) Not too many years ago, The Bangkok Post proclaimed that the Dusit Thani Hua Hin was the best place in all of Thailand to bring in the New Year. The Dusit Thani Hua Hin’s latest New Year’s party was two-fold, one to bring in the New Year and two, to say good-bye to Victor Sukseree, the Hua Hin’s Dusit’s General Manager for the last 25 years, a length of time unheard of in the Hospitality Industry. Due to printing deadlines we weren’t able to bring you this story in our January issue. We at HOT Magazine wish Victor all the best in his future endeavors. The countdown party at Dusit Thani Hua Hin marked a significant changing of the guard The famous New Year countdown party at the Dusit Thani Hua Hin reached the end of an era with its recent “The Ultimate Countdown 2015”. Hosted by the hotel’s general manager and impresario, Victor Sukseree, the party was billed as the last under his management since he opened the hotel about 25 years ago, after which he will 26

February 15 - March 15, 2016

make way for a new manager. The countdown party, themed “Save the Last Dance for Me”, began with cocktails in the lobby, during which judges and their assistants sought out potential candidates for the Crown and Tiara Fancy Dress competition Guests then moved towards the lawn where a vast stage had been set up , with a backdrop that reflected the themes of past countdown events. Buffet tables lined the peripheries of the lawn, and a small fireworks display announced “Bon Appetit”. During dinner, guests were entertained by the Quickstep Silver Ball orchestra conducted by Kittikhun Sodprasert, joined by leading vocalists Sakon Suchartvudhi, Jakkrin Prommin, Denis Ng, Arthur Panyachote, Issariya Kuprasert, Kanyarat Kuisuwan, Sirinporn Vessarojkit and Viruj Sarobol They were followed by a mini-concert by celebrity guest singers Kornkan Sutthikoses and Sarun Kungbunpot, with a surprise appearance by veteran singer, the sultry voiced Srisalai Suchartwut,

who had virtually stepped off the plane from the US and joined the party. A favourite of the party crowd as always was the a capella group The Last Dance Choristers, aka The Resonance, who got everyone dancing with their Abba medley, ending with the trademark Sawasdee. Not to be missed was a dance performance by the Dusit Resident Acting Group comprised entirely of the hotel staff and students from the Phetchaburi Rajabhat University who intern at the hotel. They were led by a handful of professional dancers, and choreographed by Suteesak Pakdeeteva, who also sang with The Resonance. Between programmes was the fancy dress contest and the lucky draw. Winners in both the adult and children’s categories were uncontested as they were each by far most outstanding in terms of creativity and cuteness respectively. A special video presentation with voice over by Mr Victor served as a personal farewell to the guests, many of whom had returned time and time again from

H.E.Staffan Herrstrom Swedish Ambassador to Thailand, Victor Sukseree, Mrs.Karin and Ms. Anna Sofia Victoria Herrstrom

all over the world and were considered more as friends than guests. At the end of the entertainment programme, the entire production team joined dancers and musicians on stage to present flowers to Mr Victor. The Last Dance Divas disco band finally got guests onto the floor, only to be interrupted by the compere to invite everyone to make their way to the lagoon where a khon performance awaited This was challenging to the dancers, as they had to perform on barges and a submerged stage, giving the impression of walking on water. Adding to the wow factor was a “heavenly being who whizzed down over the lagoon on a sling bearing a placard of new year wishes. The timing was impeccable, and soon the clock chime was heard, counting down from 10 to one to Happy New Year! A magnificent fireworks display signalled the beginning of 2016, and after countless kisses and hugs, guests made their way back to the dance floor to dance the night away.

Chiva Som, an environmental leader in Hua Hin

C

hiva Som, the Internationally recognized Health and Wellness Spa in Hua Hin has an ongoing commitment to raise environmental awareness and preservation in our local community. They are proactively involved in conserving our valuable natural resources. They have several initiatives, policies and practices in place to viably sustain Chiva-Som’s business and grow into the future with an environmentally responsible approach. For the last few years, Chiva-Som and the Preserve Hua Hin Group has been developing “Krailart Niwate”, the Mangrove Ecosystem Preservation & Science Education Centre in the last remaining urban mangrove forest in Hua Hin. The objectives of the project is to rehabilitate and preserve the mangrove as a viable living ecosystem and promote science education and ecotourism in the area.

A 1,000-meter elevated boardwalk throughout the mangrove was constructed to bring individuals into the ecosystem to help them understand both the stability and fragility of mangrove forests, and the symbiotic relationship between plants, animals and water. The boardwalk was opened to the public in December 2015 and Chiva-Som provided the funding for the construction. In the next phase, a state of the art science education center is going to be built as a showcase of sustainability designed for low environmental impact and energy conservation. The mangrove rehabilitation project is located on land owned by the Buddhist temple Wat Khao Krai Lart. The project has been underway by the Preserve Hua Hin Group since 2007 with the planting of over 1,000 trees. The aspirations of the project, beyond physical rehabilitation, incorporate ‘inspiring and motivating today’s youth to develop an interest in studying sciences for a sustainable future’, and ‘to promote environmental wellness as a vital component of community wellness’. The project was awarded 1st Place for Sustainable Development in Tourism for Marine/Coastal Tourism at the SKAL International Awards 2014. The mangrove is situated on 12 rai of protected wetland at the foot of the Wat Khao Krailart temple approximately two kilometres from Chiva-Som. The project is going to be commissioned in honor and celebration of the 60th birthday anniversary of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

February 15 - March 15, 2016

Since 2004, Chiva-Som has been working through the Preserve Hua Hin Group (PHHG), under Royal Patronage of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, to drive environmental preservation awareness while promoting natural resource conservation initiatives and social interaction within the local community, by organising and sponsoring events such as carbon neutral, ‘climate positive’ outdoor concerts, half marathons, mangrove reforestation projects, waste to art exhibitions, beach clean-ups, and other activities for social welfare and community improvement. Fed Cup, the World Cup of Tennis Comes to Hua Hin

T

hailand, and more specifically, Hua Hin, had the marvellous honour of hosting the Fed Cup women’s tennis tournament this year. From the third to the sixth of February, the Asia / Oceania Zone’s draw was played out at the fantastic True Arena Hua Hin sports facility, and there was plenty of excitement to go around.

36

February 15 - March 15, 2016

The Fed Cup has a rich history, one which began fifty-four years ago, with as little as sixteen teams and no prize money for the eventual winner. The first ever game was held between the United States and Australia, which saw the former eventually clinch the title. The Aussie’s however, would have the last laugh, (for a while, at least) as

they would go on to win seven of the following eleven championships, an era of dominance in the tournament. Born from an urge to create a Davis Cup for women, the Federations Cup, as it was known until 1995, is women’s tennis’ most praised international tournament, today contested by almost one hundred nations. The United States

has won the most titles at seventeen, a record it set with its utter dominance during the eighties. But it last won the cup at the turn of the millennium, after which the dominance would switch to southern and eastern European nations. Italy, Russia and the Czech Republic have won twelve of the last sixteen editions, the latter of which is now

the second most successful nation in the history of the cup and the current champion. On February 1st, the best tennis players from Thailand, China, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Korea, Kazakhstan, India and Uzbekistan all converged on Hua Hin staying at the InterContinental

Hua Hin Resort. The teams had several days to practice and acclimate to the heat. On Tuesday February 2nd, Khun Suwat Liptapanlop, President of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand, welcomed all teams during an evening party at the Hawk Eye Roof Top Club atop True Arena.

In an intense four-day tournament of play, the eight teams that were represented were divided into two separate pools. These consisted of the Japan, Uzbekistan, India and the hosts Thailand in the first group A and China, neighbouring Chinese Taipei, South Korea and Kazakhstan in the second group B. They played three pool games each and were ranked from one to four on a performance basis, which left the hosts top of group A, followed by Japan, India in penultimate place and Uzbekistan last. Group B saw Chinese Taipei get the better of their mainland rivals, who came second to them. Third was Kazakhstan, with South Korea coming last, being too the only nation not to win a pool game. Subsequently, there was a cross playoff for first place, in which the two top teams from Pool A, Thailand and Japan, played each other with Japan taking the match. There was no need for a playoff for Pool B because Chinese Taipei never lost a match. The final game was hotly contested but eventually Chinese Taipei emerged as the victor over Japan to go on to the World Group ll play offs in April of this year. The event was a big success and definitely made for great entertainment for those who attended the free four-day tournament.

Finally, there is Centennial Hall, which is their 36 x 22.5 meter indoor multi-sport complex ready for almost any kind of competition. The building can be converted to one basketball, volleyball court or futsal field and four badminton courts. Personal trainers are also on hand for basketball, volleyball, futsal, badminton and swimming. True Thailand Classic Returns March 10

T

he Black Mountain Golf Club in Hua Hin will once again play host to the prestigious True Thailand Classic, Presented by Black Mountain, this coming March 10th to the 13th. In its second year, the True Thailand Classic is sanctioned by both the European & Asian Golf Tour and boasts the largest prize money of any golf tournament in the Kingdom.

th

Over 150 Asian and European players will partake in this year’s event including top ranked Thai players Thongchai Jaidee and his compatriot Kiradech Aphibarnrat, both of whom are hotly favoured to rank amongst the top three. A new feature that will make the course a little tougher for the players, and more fun to watch for the spectators, is the brand new par 3 third hole. This hole now features a teeing shot straight towards the mountain with a waterfall running down close to the green on the left hand-side. The new configuration has changed the third hole from one of the easiest on the course to one of the most difficult. Players from the tour will have to study this new feature with great care if they wish to walk away from the tournament with an oversized cardboard check. The Black Mountain Golf Course, which has been voted the best Thai golf course for five consecutive years, has begun building a 3,363-metre (3678 yards) nine-hole layout to complement

the existing championship course that opened in 2007. The new nine, which replaces a parthree course on the site, will open in the second half of 2016 and will wind through a natural valley. “Black Mountain has built a reputation for outstanding quality golf as well as service and facilities and the new nine holes will mirror the high standards for which we have become renowned,” Elisson said. Spectators at the True Thailand Classic will also be able to tour Black Mountain’s new exclusive three-bedroom four-storey townhouses, each with a sun terrace and swimming pool along the course’s ninth hole, that are now available for sale. Each townhouse includes a lifetime membership to the golf club. Last year’s True Thailand Classic was watched by several hundred million people from around the world and this year’s tourney promises to be just as exciting. if you’re in Hua Hin, and you are a fan of golf, then the Black Mountain Golf Club is where you should be March 10th thru the 13th.

Queen’s Cup Pink Polo Tournament Set for February 27th in Pattaya

T

he most charitable and kind hearted of polo events is back in Pattaya! The Queen’s Cup Pink Polo Tournament graces this beach town yet again, for another edition of fantastic sport, class, beauty, competition, charity and fun. On the 27th of February, the equestrian community as well as the glitterati of Thailand will have its eyes fixed again on the enthralling developments of this grand occasion. Played yearly at the Thai Polo and Equestrian Cup in Pattaya, this tournament is a lot more than a mere game of jockeys with a stick going after a ball. Played to raise funds for the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer at Chulalungkorn Hospital (to which the Queen is a patron), this event allows to propagate awareness and publicity for a very important cause: breast cancer. The Queen’s Cup Pink Polo Tournament is hosted by the Thailand Equestrian Club, a stunning 2,000 rai facility co-owned by Mr. Harald Link,

56

February 15 - March 15, 2016

Chairman of the B Grimm group of companies and Khun Nunthinee Tanner, Managing Director of LBG. Co. Ltd.. Through a chance meeting with Dr. Kris Chatamra, the Queen’s personal physician, Khun Nunthinee and Dr. Kris decided to raise money for the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer by putting on The Queen’s Cup Pink Polo Tournament. According to Khun Nunthinee, “We hope that our event increases awareness of the threat that Breast Cancer poses to many women and at the same time we hope that our event will also introduce a new generation to the exciting game of polo.” Khun Nunthinee went on to say, “It is important to let people know about the tournament so that more women can join in this enthralling sport. Also, I want to assist women in need. Breast cancer is a disease that targets women. Given this opportunity, I think it is important to help women as much as I can. The donation to the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer is a good starting point

in helping women afflicted with the disease. As much as playing polo can enhance the confidence in a woman, I want to be able to help women who are affected to regain their confidence and self-worth.” Allowing solely women to participate, the tournament equally showcases the ability and great class of women polo players, who are at times unfairly overlooked in favour of their male counterparts. This occasion allows all Thai women who are avid “riders” to prove that they have nothing to envy. Now in its eighth edition, this event gathers as much style as it gathers attention, and it is not called “Pink Polo” for not reason: all attendees of the tournament are encouraged to wear pink as it is the colour that symbolizes the fight against breast cancer, in fact the pink décor is prominently displayed across the entire venue. All of the funds are donated to the Queen’s foundation, which is able in this way, to further extend its funds for the

research, treatment and prevention of breast cancer around Thailand. BMW is once again a proud sponsor of the tournament. The President of BMW in Thailand, Mr. Matthias Pfalz, asserted in one of his interviews with the press that “the character of the polo sport perfectly fits with the character of the branch of BMW” something clear in the intentions to promote social causes and other acts of high social esteem. A donation of 1,000 baht per person will gain you entrance to the Pink Polo Cup matches, a fashion show on horseback, a kid’s polo exhibition, show jumping and a “Best Hat” competition. The Queen’s Cup Pink Polo Tournament runs from 12:00 to 19:00 and promises to be a marvellous event, if you find yourself at a loose end in Pattaya, it is definitely worth joining the cause. Hold private meetings in their 243 person capacity Meetings & Events space, or they can organise an event by the pool with exciting entertainment for you! The Chatrium caters to each of the five senses of its exquisite and sybarite customer base. The aromas in every part of the hotel differ, from violets, to vanilla and roses to cinnamon, the aesthetics in every room, lounge, and facility take into account space, color and shape to create unrepeatable ambiances, the textures take over achieving comfort rarely found in the vastness of a hotel of such calibre, and finally taste; with its three distinct

dining venues, Albricias, Flow Oasis Pool Lounge and the Lobby Lounge, The Chatrium Residence satisfies all five human senses.. As you enter the Chatrium Residence you are welcomed by the front desk staff with their warm traditional Thai attention and the accuracy and efficiency of a Swiss clock. Towards the left of the reception area is found the Lobby lounge, accommodated with majestic yet incredibly comfortable sofas in which an array of teas and other beverages can be enjoyed while waiting to be picked up to explore the city or simply reading a book with the exhilarating natural sunlight entering through the large glass panes. On the fourth floor is found the symbol of the city oasis, a large

undulated swimming pool with both distinct shallow and deep areas joined by a bridge. The swimming pool is surrounded by large leafy greenery which takes you deep within a rainforest, a tropical paradise surrounded by skyscrapers. Swimming at the Chatrium is an experience that makes you come in touch with all the nature Bangkok city seems to lack. Beside the pool, is the Flow Oasis Pool Lounge, decorated with seats that look like bird nests, from which one can enjoy lunch by the pool, a snack while checking up on the kids, or creative cocktails in the refreshing evening breeze of Bangkok. On the same floor as the tropical paradise is the majestic Albricias restaurant. Worlds apart from the

rainforest, it takes its customers deep into a modern Japanese hall, with its simplistic murals and the usage of cool colors such as blue, white, violet and beige to paint autumn and winter trees being blown in the wind. It is then wonderfully unexpected and a shake to the senses, that the decor does not dictate the cuisine. Japanese dishes are served once a week, however, Albricias is inspired by Mediterranean flavours. French, Spanish, Italian and Greek cuisine take over the restaurant and it does so with the best imported foods for the palate; French cheese, Spanish ham, sweet and dry wine and most essentially quality olive oil. Albricias offers such exquisite food, that it often attracts customers outside of hotel residents. Room types include the 45 square

meter Deluxe Studio Suite which is ideal for those staying alone or as a couple. Within the room you’ll find complete convenience with a luxurious bathroom, kitchenette with microwave oven and refrigerator, and a separate dining area. When we had the pleasure of staying at Chatrium Residence we opted for their 70 sqm Deluxe One-Bedroom Suite. The suite offered everything we needed for a truly enjoyable stay. We didn’t, but you can prepare your own meals in the kitchenette and the 70 square meters gives you plenty of space to relax in the dining and living area. The inviting bedroom provides peace and relaxation for a dreamy night’s sleep and having the separate bedroom from the living area is great if one person gets up before the other.

L et’s Go, Nongkhai T his month’s Let’s Go feature takes us to the charming northernmost province in the area of Isan as it stretches from west to east in an elongated curvature. Known for a variety of folk events and its proximity to the border, Nong Khai is one of those provinces that connects cultures and blends traditions. We begin with a bit of history. Nong

64

February 15 - March 15, 2016

Khai has always been a place at the crossroads of two cultures. Long before it was a province, it became engulfed to be part of the Kingdom of Siam, and the Kingdom of Lan Xang, which already began to mould the various factors of its varied culture. At the height of the nineteenth century’s Haw Wars, across a period of twenty five years between 1865 and 1890, it saw a series of confrontations that involved the former

two Kingdoms and the Chinese Haw rebels. Nong Khai became a battleground that witnessed plenty of bellicose activity and confrontation, but which at the same time cemented the roots of what today makes one of the richest provinces of modern Thailand, of which it would eventually become a part. To understand these confrontations well, it is important to know about its

location. Nong Khai is situated at the most northern part of Isan, bordered by Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakhon, Udon Thani and Loei clockwise from east to west and bordering the Lao People’s Democratic Republic’s Vientiane Province, Vientiane Prefecture and Bolikhamxai to the north. The province is situated in the valley of the Mae Nam Kong along the Mekong River, which at the same time forms the border between one country and the other. It is known for its elevation in its southern part and for the plains of the north. One of Nong Khai’s most prominent and distinguishable features is the bridge that goes by the name of “First Thai - Lao Friendship Bridge”, which

connects the two nations through this elevated path and demonstrates the close ties that have been formed both at a cultural and a political level, honouring thus the existing geographical unison. The importance of this bridge, which opened almost twenty two years ago is paramount, not only as symbolism, but as a current and future economic incentive of great value. The one and a half kilometre bridge was constructed with the collaboration of the Australian government, who funded it with a sum of nineteen million pounds as part of development aid for Laos. Possessing a footpath, car lanes as well as a train line, it makes Nong Khai the only province in Thailand through which one can travel

to Laos by train. The modification of a rail line for a high speed train to pass through the Nong Khai province is an active initiative with China, one which is said to increase Thailand’s GDP by three hundred and eighty billion dollars. But there are other means of transport to and from Nong Khai. If one has a preference to move through air, Udon Thani International Airport is the closest one. At a mere fifty five kilometres, it takes only a half an hour to get to Nong Khai, which is very convenient for any traveller. The airport offers a number of local destinations, primarily trips to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi and Dong Mueang and Chiang Mai.

Nong Khai’s seal is composed of a bush of bamboo stems and extensive marshland, known in Thai as Nong. Behind those are depicted mountains which complete the seal. History reveals that the king Phra Nang Klao led his troupes to invade the city of Krung Sri Satana Kanahut, next to which he brought up a new city that would guard the vicinities of any future rebellion. Said city was erected amongst a marshland with lots of bamboo, thus eventually going on to represent the province’s seal. Nong Khai is famous for a number of very historically rich monuments which tell the illustrious history of this border province. One of the most famous is the Prap Ho Monument which is said to contain the cremated bones of the individuals who fought during the Haw Wars and lost their lives in battle. This was done in order to recognise and honour the great bravery that the warriors went through in order to sacrifice their lives for the prosperity of the then Kingdom of Siam, the monument is surrounded by inscriptions that are written in English, Thai, Chinese and Lao.

Another fantastic sight to view is the Prathat Nong Khai or Prathat Klang Nam, which is a shattered pagoda that stands in midst of the river Mekong. Nine pieces of the foot of Lord Buddha were kept here according to the legend of Urangkhathat. The pagoda itself however, was supposedly built between the fifteenth century and the seventeenth century. The Nong Khai Horticulture Research Centre is another interesting place to visit on your trip to the province. This place is abundant with a large array of different local vegetables such as the Krachiao, the Prhakkat Ya, the Song Mong and the Phak Wan Pha which are grown within. Additionally, around one hundred assorted varieties of fragrant flowers are found in this location, with vibrant flowers of temperate nature growing here in the summer. A more geographical feature that outstands in Nong Khai is Phu Thok. Phu Thok means “An Isolated Mountain” in the dialect of Isan. This feature consists of two prominent hills, the Phu Thok Yai, which is the bigger one of the two, and the smaller Phu Thok Noi. In the past,

there was greater greenery in these parts, which decidedly led to the meditation master Phra Ajarn Chuan Kunlachettho to establish a meditation centre in which Buddhists could pursue their teachings, religious and spiritual activities alike. Nong Khai has many festivals throughout the year. Songkran, as in the rest of Thailand, is a great experience here and is highly revered as a purifying and rejuvenating act. Thus, the Trut Songkran Fair is one of the highlights of the year, an event in which the spiritual leader Luangpho Phra Sai and other Buddha images are made to march in a fantastic procession across the streets and are bathed to symbolise reverence and revitalisation. The Bun Bang Fai fair is probably one of the most fascinating festivals of Nong Khai. Held in May of every year, which is the sixth lunar month, it features the launching of rockets to worship the god of rain Phaya Thaen, as a mechanism to ask for more frequent showers. The Wat Pho Chai is where this takes place, with rockets and fireworks being ignited in a marvellous display.

Last but certainly not least, is a mind blowing natural event known by the name of Bang Fai Phaya Nak and occurs at the end of Buddhist lent. Seen along the Mekong River and a number of districts, it is a beautiful phenomenon by which a number of spectacular reddish illuminated balls rise out of the river and elevate themselves several hundreds of metres in the air before quietly disappearing in the night. There have been a great number of hypothesis relation to the event, which has drawn great scientific attention, from plasma physics to gaseous releases. Some believe they are falsely created by Laotian soldiers supposedly seen firing tracer rounds, but the overall event continues to be a mystery. Nong Khai is one of the most interesting provinces in Thailand and once certainly worth going to. Whether you are attracted by the richness of its history and the beauty of its culture or the magnificence of its marvellous scenery, Nong Khai is without a doubt a destination worth visitng.

Siam Green Centre

February 15 - March 15, 2016

Located amongst the Bangkokian concrete jungle, at the top of the Siam Square One shopping centre, it is an

urban agricultural learning centre and is considered to be Bangkok’s largest roof top garden. Stretching at an amazing two thousand square meters, it serves three main societal purposes for the betterment of society. The first one is social networking, the second is agricultural awareness and the third is learning. The latter idea is implemented through the learning centre, which focuses on the propagation of pioneering agriculture, ecological urban areas and management of landscape as well as safe food production processes. Agricultural awareness is

said to teach about local Thai farming life, allowing for urban Thais to learn about the ways in which things are done in rural areas. The awareness and good usage of space is another feature that is meant to encapsulate the essence of this space, which demonstrates that greenery does not need acres of land. Self-sustainability, the implementation of renewable energy and the creation of an eco-friendly social network are all vital aspects of this project. There are three essential parts to the rooftop garden: the first is an innovative plot of land on which farming can

angkok is often criticised for the lack of green spaces, urban agglomeration and absence of natural land. Whilst this is certainly true, there are small initiatives in order to slowly reverse this trend, which aim to slowly produce locations in which one can find some greenery and freshness. One of those places goes by the name of Siam Green Centre and has been opened by Chulalungkorn University.

take place. The second is a plot for garden plants, which are grown and groomed. Finally, the third is a trendy plot of multifarious plants, catering to a number of demands and activities. Out of the three sections, the largest plot of land is the innovative plot, which bears an innovative cultivation with solar system panels. Visitors are granted the opportunity to witness the processes through which one makes organic fertiliser through various types of stored waste. Equally, they are able to witness the cultivation of plants that are suitable for an array of areas, such as edible plants, rice and herbs. This can be used by visitors as a guide to carry out their own plantations in the future. In this third section, there is a display of plants that do not require additional care beyond the planting and occasional watering. The Siam Green Sky is open to welcome visitors on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10:00 until 18:00, with not entry price. Every third weekend there are a number of free workshops that attendees can participate in to immerse themselves in the experience. The Siam Green Sky is truly a pioneering initiative at the heart of Bangkok, one worth visiting if you love nature and botany but live in the city. What are you waiting for?
