“In our article about Urban Living Furniture published in July on page 30 it was written “ Joachim and Matt were planning on buying Homeless Furniture but in the end saw the deal fall through”. Hot Magazine would like to point out that it meant nothing positive or negative when using the words “fall through”. We simply meant to say the deal did not materialize hence Joachim and Matt opened their own business. We apologize for any misunderstanding.

Dear Reader, Welcome to Issue 9 Volume 3. Something we already knew, but it’s great to be reaffirmed, is that Hua Hin is one of the best cities in the world to retire to. According to “Live and Invest Overseas” Hua Hin was ranked 7th with Chiang Mai following in at 8th. No other Thai cities made the list. Hua Hin is described as “A coastal town full of resorts on the beach and popular among foreigners who love to play golf, tennis and to eat. The resort town has good health care service and low crime”. That pretty much fits us to a T. If you do decide to retire here then one of the best places you could live is at the Palm Hills Golf Club and Residence. For over 20 years Palm Hills has reigned supreme as the development with the highest density of big expensive luxury homes. Read why the wealthy have made that choice on page 72. While we’re on the subject of housing, on page 30 we introduce you to developer Khun Waa or as her buyer’s refer to her “Khun Wow”. She’s built over 155 homes in Hua Hin, selling out 5 projects in the process with her sixth recently announced. Also this month, we have the distinct pleasure to sit down with Khun Sumanee Guna-Kasem. Khun Sumanee is a well-known Thai socialite, businesswoman and one of the most prolific collectors of antiques in Thailand. She once famously outbid the Sultan of Brunei on a piece she just had to have for her collection, that’s on page 34. Our “Let’s Go feature this month takes us to Lopburi, about 150 km’s northeast of Bangkok. Here you’ll find temple ruins, sunflowers as far as the eye can see and mischievous monkeys, or as Peter Seller’s in the Pink Panther movies used to call them, “Minkeys”. Chart out your next destination on page 50. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find this month. As always, thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

L et’s Meet Manish Jho What is your full name and age? My name is Manish Jha, I’m 39. What is your current Job Position? General Manager of Anantara Hua Hin Resort & Spa. How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? I’ve been here for two months after moving from the Seychelles where I was the General Manager at AVANI. However, during 2010-2014 I was a General Manager at Anantara Bophut Resort, Koh Samui. What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? Before I moved here to Hua Hin, I knew that Hua Hin is a very popular beach destination for Thai’s as well as expats. It is a wonderful getaway for golf lovers or families looking for a hideout away from the big city of Bangkok. What do you like most about your profession? My profession has no boundaries, living in one place I get to meet the world, different people, different profession and their likes and dislikes. I am exploring everyday which is exciting. What do you like least about your profession? Least about my profession, I think being spoilt. My profession, being the General Manager of 5 star hotels, shows the best of life. It’s definitely a luxury lifestyle although there is more to it than that. What do you like most about Hua Hin? Hua Hin offers a lot, It is more customized to the local, so you get to find the best /authentic of local seafood. Not only that the people in Hua Hin are loving and giving, What is your favorite restaurant and why? I have not been in Hua Hin for long yet so I think I have a lot to explore, besides a few local restaurants I would say Rim Naam our Thai restaurant. What do you like to do in your free time and why? I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, specially my daughter as she is only 7 and once she grows up I will not get chance.

Coco Beach Club

14

This month, the HOT Magazine’s food review team was cordially invited to the dazzling Coco Beach Club.

and personal experience. And so, with the relaxing sound of their refreshing indoor waterfall, we began our meal.

Tucked away in a recondite yet accessible spot in front of the Hilton Hotel, lies this wonderful establishment, which one wouldn’t make out from the outside. But as we ventured in, we were very pleasantly struck by the refreshing ambiance. Modernistic yet classic, vibrant yet subtle, colourfully lit yet discrete, this funky beach club with upbeat music is the perfect setting for anybody’s idea of a stirred up night. We were conveniently seated in one of the many independent table booths, separated by a thin curtain of rugged texture for a more intimate

First came the entree course, which started things off with a bang: a wonderful dish of smoked salmon, crisp potato nest, crème fraiche and Tzar Caviar. This was an absolutely delightful confection, brought in elegantly to the point where one felt bad to eat it. A beautiful smoky flavour emanating from the crunchy potato nest inundated the senses and combined splendidly with the fresh and genuine tones of the salmon. Adding a beautiful and soft, almost brielike hint, was the crème fraiche. This was creamy, subtle and allowed the caviar to

September 15 - October 15 , 2015

become more flavourful, which it did by accentuating its delicate taste at the end of the bite – All in all, a truly lavish way of inaugurating the dinner. Next we were presented with a wonderful first course: the tostada with guacamole, seasoned shrimp, salsa and sour cream. This was another wonderfully constructed masterpiece, a colourful and vividly presented dish of which again we felt bad to dissect. This wasn’t done in vain however, as our expectations were matched and surpassed. First to grace the palate was the beautifully distinct essence of the seasoned shrimp, which with its characteristic taste set out the precedent

for the rest of the flavours to follow. We saw then the creamy guacamole transpire, in which one could really make out the freshness of the avocados. All these tender mellow textures were brightly contrasted by the crackle of the tostada, which granted one a true sensation of balance. Finishing off the bite was the distinct taste of the ground pepper and the sweet detail of the red pepper - A splendid dish. We were next presented with a dish that tasted as complexly as its name sounds: Whole wheat tortilla with goat’s cheese latte, topped with Parma ham and complemented with rocket leaves and tomato kisses. A first bite provided the palate with an intense flavour from the cheese, which made its way to the back of the cheekbones while the flavour of the Parma ham took centre stage. Then came hints of the truffle sauce, which in all of its grandiosity added to the meaty flavour of the cured ham. The element of freshness was provided by the petite cherry tomatoes, which at the same time gave a tangy touch. We enjoyed this one thoroughly.

To cap it all off, we finished by having the Pizza Neapolitan with goat cheese and Parma ham. The real delight of this was in the first taste of its thin crust: again like with the whole-wheat tortilla, the cheese took centre stage. The ham followed suit and complemented the smoky flavour of the crust, which along with the spices provided the palate with a fresh and distinct gamma of flavours. As a whole, the experience that the HOT Magazine team had at the Coco Beach Club was one of delightful proportions. As the night continued to settle, the ambiance grew greater and we are certain that the good vibes continued well into the night after we left. If you haven’t been there yet, it is time that you set out to try it. We can bet that it will not be your last visit! Coco Beach Club 032 908080 www.cocobeach.club

CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME…. AND AWAY Hua Hin, Thailand, The nation’s love for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit knows no bounds and it was inevitable that on the occasion of Her 83rd Birthday the vogue celebration for our Queen of Hearts’ untiring work on behalf of the Thai people was very much focused on the nationwide Bike for Mom. Staff members of Dusit Thani Hua Hin, of course, also marked the occasion in this way. However, whilst cycling was taking centre stage for so many, it was Dusit Thani Hua Hin’s own leading Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative to support youth football in the local community through the highly successful Dusit Thani Hua Hin Football Academy (DTHHFA) that really came 24

September 15 - October 15 , 2015

to the fore on this Mother’s Day. The academy, who boast children of the staff amongst well over 90 registered players and is preparing hard for the start of a new league season in September, teamed up with the hotel to organize a Cha-am Beach and Temple Cleaning Teambuilding Activity for players, coaches, family members, who were joined by Dusit Thani Hua Hin Staff. A working party of almost 100 people took part, leaving from the hotel for Cha-am Beach with a police escort which later took the convoy to Mrigadayawan Temple, where the group also had the opportunity to make merit, as well as donate towards the temple’s upkeep and construction of a central image of the Lord Buddha.

Finally, some three hours later, everyone returned for a final sweep of the beach in front of Dusit Thani Hua Hin, followed by a well-deserved and much-needed buffet lunch, highlighted by a lucky draw and the presentation of certificates to all of the players who had taken part in the 2014/2015 Western Thailand Football Academy League. Though tiring, this most gratifying contribution to the local Cha-am community by Dusit Thani Hua Hin and Dusit Thani Hua Hin Football Academy was extremely well received, gaining extensive coverage from the local media, including Cha-am Charlie Cable TV on behalf of Thai TV Channel 7.

Khun Waa, one of Hua Hin’s most prolific builders

M

rs. Phanphim Fueangsuwan, nicknamed Khun Waa, was born in the Sukhothai province and moved to Hua Hin in 1990. After working 15 years as the HR Manager for the Dusit Thani Hotel she had “had enough” and yearned to have her own business. She resigned from the Dusit and through self-study learned the construction business. Khun Waa believed in the potential of Hua Hin. She saw the ongoing city development, knew that it was a safe town, liked that it was not far from Bangkok, enjoyed a low cost of living and had natural attractions such as nice beaches and caves, but most importantly, this was the King’s town. Khun Waa already had experience in art, interior design and landscaping so she searched out experts in construction and set about learning what she didn’t know. Eleven years ago, in 2004, she started her first housing development called Mon Hua Hin Villa which was located

30

September 15 - October 15 , 2015

on Soi 6. Recognizing that developing was her true calling she re-branded the project naming it Hua Hin Hillside Hamlet 1 and sold it out in short order. Khun Waa, or as she is affectionately known by her buyers as “Khun Wow” has built a total of 155 houses, selling out Hua Hin Hillside Hamlet two, three, four and five. She is now starting on her newest project Hillside Hamlet 6. The new project is next door to HH 5 and combined will have a total of 42 homes. Communal amenities include a fitness room, pool table, a 1,600 square meter green area, underground utilities, high speed fiber optic internet and a shuttle bus service running to and from town, which is a great feature for those looking to rent out their houses when they aren’t being used. When asked why she has been so successful while other developers struggle she says “I think the first reason is the quality of the houses we build and the top rated construction materials we use. Another reason for our success is the high level of service

we give our buyers which starts at the pre-sale process and continues straight on thru to completion and handover. I alone am responsible for construction and persistently check on every stage. Finally, I think the reason we’ve been so successful is that I negotiate with suppliers to keep our homes reasonably priced”. Hillside Hamlet Six will offer four house styles which all come fully furnished and landscaped; The Superior Thai Bali is a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home with 450 square meters of living space on a generous 672 meter land plot. The home comes with, designer kitchen, covered car parking with an electric gate, a storage room, and a 31.5 sqm salt water swimming pool. In the living/dining room the ceilings are over 4m high. Their Premium Thai Bali offers everything the Superior does but with more living space, 545 square meters and a larger infinity pool, over 40 square meters. The Luxury Thai Bali is bigger still with 566 square meters of living space on bigger land plots,

anywhere from 763 to 948 square meters. This home has 3 bedrooms all en-suite, covered parking for two cars with an electric gate and an extralarge covered terrace. Their Executive Thai Bali home is their biggest and most prestigious with a total living area of 700 square meters on a land plot ranging in size from 927 to 1,226 square meters. This home offers 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, an infinity swimming pool almost 50 square meters in size with jacuzzi and a 12 sqm multi-functional Thai style pool pavilion. This home also features a guest toilet and the master bedroom and guest bedroom ( bedroom no.4 ) have wooden floors. Hillside Hamlet use a lot of wood in their homes which sets them apart from most other developments. Doors, windows and some ceilings are wood which gives them not only a more Asian and exotic look but also a more “homier” feeling. Khun Waa has earned her nickname “Khun Wow” for several reasons. One is her ability and willingness to personalize and customize each house in accordance with her buyer’s special wishes. The other is that she and her staff help every client to make their move to Thailand as smooth as possible including but not limited to assistance in banking matters, law questions, annual visa and finding best deals with local suppliers and services. Again according to Khun Waa, “for every new project we start I always upgrade from the previous one. As an example, our newest project will benefit from re-styled kitchens and bathrooms and we are using a higher grade of kitchen appliances and bathroom fixtures and fittings. We are also putting domed wooden ceilings in all houses. We use Teak wood which is very strong for the doors, windows, and ceiling’s. We use Maca Wood for the Master bedroom and guest bedroom in some houses. Additional new features to our 6th project include SMG glass (Solar Management Glass, 6 mm. thick for sun protection), a Voice alarm, CCTV and an Emergency light”. Hua Hin Hillside Hamlet 5 & 6 is located just ten minutes from town with prices ranging from 8,750,000 to 14,994,000 THB. A conversation with Khun Sumanee Guna-Kasem

34

September 15 - October 15 , 2015

K

hun Sumanee Guna-Kasem is a well-known Thai Socialite, business woman and one of the most prolific collectors of antiques in Thailand. Her collection’s value has been estimated in the billions of baht. The world’s high profile auction houses know her well and she once famously outbid the Sultan of Brunei on a piece she wanted for her collection. She was born at Siriaj Hospital, the same hospital where His Majesty, The King of Thailand currently resides. The house where she spent her early years was very near where Bangkok’s Central Embassy Shopping Mall sits today but back then the whole area was nothing but rice fields. Her parents bought land and built their house near a convent school she attended so she could walk to school. Her father started his career as a policeman but advanced in Government, so much so that by the time war broke out in Viet Nam he was sent to Saigon as Thailand’s Ambassador. While he was in Saigon Khun Sumanee was sent to England to further her studies. In 1962 Khun Suminee married Pracha Guna-Kasem who was working for Thailand’s Foreign Affairs Ministry. Pracha’s first foreign posting was to Cairo where they spent two years. They then moved to Hong Kong where Pracha was posted as Thailand’s Consul General spending three and a half years there. From Hong Kong they were sent to the United States where for six years her husband was Thailand’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Khun Sumanee says that for her husband it felt like home as he had received his Doctorate in Philosophy from Yale University after attending Oxford on scholarship. Khun Sumanee enjoyed her time in New York and became acquainted with many famous people including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon. After New York Khun Prascha was sent to Geneva as Thailand’s Ambassador. It is here that she purchased many of her most extraordinary Jewelry pieces from the world’s best known auction houses. Prascha’s final Ambassadorial posting was to France and Algeria. Prascha went on to other posts inside the Government which included Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Director General of Economic Affairs, Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs, and Director General of ASEANThailand, amongst others. Sadly Khun Prascha passed away several years ago. Khun Sumanee lives in a ten story building with a personal staff of 50. The building was a gift to her from her

father almost 50 years ago, shortly after she wed. She recounts that back then foundations weren’t made of steel and cement rather they used hard woods. She remembers her mother going down to the Chao Phraya River to meet the barges carrying some of the 5,000 teak logs that were harvested in the north of Thailand for their building’s foundation. Fourteen years ago she and her husband set up a foundation called the Maneemondcha Foundation which provides scholarships for underprivileged Thai’s. Because of her father’s love for dogs, as does she, the foundation also looks after 800 dogs in Thailand. Khun Sumanee has 5 dogs

spend much time in Thailand as a youngster, but the Thailand that I knew after the War was quite a bit different that today. Thailand was so peaceful and quiet, full of culture (as it still is today) and full of romance. Certainly, the enormous buildings of Bangkok were nowhere in sight back in those days! HOT Magazine: Your husband was also a Diplomat for Thailand. Where did you meet and did you know right away that you wanted to marry him? Khun Sumanee: My husband and I first met at Oxford, in England, where he was studying. As you know, they only take the best at Oxford, but that wasn’t what grabbed me. I returned home and saw him again in Bangkok when I was about 22 years of age. He eventually went to Yale University in America and quickly earned the qualifications needed to return home as Second Secretary. My father, who at that time was undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry, 36

herself, each with their own nanny. HOT Magazine had the distinct pleasure of sitting down with Khun Sumanee to discuss her amazing life story. HOT Magazine: Khun Sumanee, your father was a Diplomat for Thailand. As a child growing up you must have lived in many countries. What childhood memories are most memorable? Khun Sumanee: Being the child of a diplomat gave me many opportunities to see different wonderful things in the world, meet very interesting people, go to such exciting places and experience a great many things. One thing that I hope

was very impressed with his abilities. I guess this was the time my attraction to him grew when we met again. We were engaged only for three months before we wed. Our marriage was sponsored by His Majesty King Bhumibol. HOT Magazine: Were you and your husband posted to many different countries and if so which one was your favorite? Khun Sumanee: I loved every country we were posted to. However, my favorite would have to be New York. Normally, an Ambassador would spend 4 years at one post, but we stayed 6 years in what was then known as the capital city of the world. I can simply say that it was the most exciting place to live, full of interest, always elegant, growing and much more formal than today. If you can picture the formality and elegance of a day gone by such as the reception scene in the movie My Fair Lady…always exquisite and total class.

will never happen again is a world war. I lived through the Second World War as a young child in Penang, Malaysia. I saw the war as a child but had to grow up very quickly. It was certainly not all riches and roses, as some people think the life of a diplomat’s family is, because at this time I remember spending one whole week underground in a tiny hand-made bunker with very little to eat. For me, at that age, it was both exciting and terrifying. That said, the family of a diplomat have been taught to keep their composure and not show ever emotion. HOT Magazine: What was Thailand like when you were growing up? Khun Sumanee: I actually didn’t

HOT Magazine: We understand you have one son. Can you tell us about him? Khun Sumanee: Yes, I have a son. His name is Pramond which is again given to him by His Majesty the King. He was born in Thailand just before my husband was at his first overseas post, that being in the Middle East. Pramond is an only child and studied in Thailand and Hong Kong as a child and then America. He created ‘His And Hers’ canine perfume which was sold in Bloomingdales (which greatly impressed me at the time because he was so young!). Returning back to Bangkok with a master’s degree, amongst other things he was one of the first to import luxury cars into Thailand, purchased and developed property in Sukhumvit, was a three time elected democratic politician in Lad Prao, Bangkok and is currently writing a book concerning his interest in Buddhism. HOT Magazine: Our magazine ethos is “Luxury Living and Exclusive Lifestyle” which can certainly be used to describe your life. Can you tell us about this beautiful home which we are sitting in here in Bangkok? Khun Sumanee: Thank you for your praise of my home and your description of my lifestyle. But to be honest I consider myself to be a simple person with simple tastes. On the other hand, I am in the public eye and represent the country so I have certain standards to uphold. I must consider the reputation of my dear husband and family. If I wanted a life of luxury only I would be set, however, I constantly work to carry the name of the Guna-Kasem and Chongcharoen families, maintain our properties and belongings, care for generations of employees, etc. My home here has been, and still is, a meeting place for distinguished persons, a place to host receptions, have dinners, meet with overseas ambassadors and company executives plus it is a place a keep my art collection. Of course, one must have a home for the family’s personal belongings, dating back several generations, many of which hold special, personal memories for me. HOT Magazine: Do you have other homes? Khun Sumanee: I have many places I could stay or properties that I own, but here is the only place that I would call home. This building was a gift from my father about the time of my wedding. It gives me a warm feeling, as anyone’s home should, with years of memories. The most recent memory, of course, is meeting you here and having this lovely, relaxed discussion.

HOT Magazine: You are a great collector of art, furniture and jewelry. Have you always been a collector? Khun Sumanee: Yes, I do collect but not specifically as a Collector. And I had not realized that I was a “great” collector. You are too kind! I cannot remember when I began keeping beautiful things that meant something to me. I suppose that after a while ‘keeping’ becomes ‘collecting’, which can be a habit but is a pleasant habit. HOT Magazine: We’ve read that you have a very large collection of Jewelry sets, what is it about Jewelry that interests you? Khun Sumanee: I really do not know how many pieces of jewelry I own. But I can tell you all about every piece, including their histories. I have no favorite, because each necklace, each bracelet, each ring, each locket, each cufflink, each hair pin, each button and every single stone is important to me and means something different to me. HOT Magazine: Besides Jewelry, what other items have you collected that are most special to you? Khun Sumanee: As I said previously, I cannot be officially considered a Collector, and have never thought of myself as one. It is a title that others sometimes use, but I do not think that way. I have acquired items over the years, some of which happen to have been of artistic standard or historical value, yes. I have been told that I have a good eye for quality. And my financial advisors over the years have never deterred me from purchasing for investment…hahaha! Still, my belongings have been a good conversation piece over the years during official, and less formal, occasions. Again, I cannot name a favorite as each has its own particular place in my heart. HOT Magazine: You have your own charity called the Maneemoncha charity project which is a combination of your’s and your husband’s names. Can you tell us about it? Khun Sumanee: Maneemondcha Foundation is primarily designed to further education, knowledge, experience plus provide scholarships for the less fortunate of the younger generation in this wonderful country we call home. The family has agreed that these issues are the most necessary to further Thailand in a successful and prosperous way. I was lucky in many ways as I child, I acknowledge that, and I wish to share my fortunes in a positive and respectful way. My father always said ‘knowledge is the greatest treasure’ and this is so true.

HOT Magazine: You support many causes, is there one that you are most passionate about and why? Khun Sumanee: Another major cause that we are so committed to is the care and future wellbeing of Bangkok’s stray animals. Unfortunately, there are too many homeless dogs and cats living on the streets. HOT Magazine: Finally Khunying Sumanee, You’ve lived an extraordinary life, from what you have lived and the life lessons you’ve learned, what most would you like to share with our readers? Khun Sumanee: Life can be short, as I saw at the beginning of mine during World War II. From this I have learnt to consider every moment as special and important. I believe we all have a reason for living and each of us has a uniqueness in life, no matter whatever occupation one has or wherever one lives or whenever one succeeds and fails etc. Having said that, we all have this life and enjoy what you have whilst you can. At the end of the day you can only take two things with you, that being your self-respect and integrity. HOT Magazine: Khun Sumanee, you have been so gracious, we thank you for all of the time you have spent with us.

Miss Thailand World

46

September 15 - October 15 , 2015

M

iss Thailand World is one of the country’s most important beauty pageant contests. Founded in 1985 it has taken significant popularity because of the eventual prize that the winners are awarded. That prize is the opportunity to compete in the internationally renowned Miss World contest that so many women in the world so covet. This past August, as every other year, the contest took place at the heart of its Bangkok headquarters and a grand show was staged in order to crown the winner on this year of the contest’s thirty year anniversary. The 2015 winner was Miss Thanyachanok Moonnita, who along with the opportunity to compete in next December’s Miss World contest was awarded a highly generous cash prize of one million baht. The rewards did not stop there however, as “French Fries” (the term with which she is peculiarly nicknamed), took away a new house and a brand new Nissan car for her to enjoy. She won out over the twenty one contestants who had also been battling to clinch the title and was crowned by the former winner Miss Maeya Nonthawan, who also made it to the top ten positions of 2014’s Miss World competition. Miss Moonnita, who hails from the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai, is a twenty two year old graduate from Bangkok’s Thammasat University with a degree in Chinese studies and can speak fluent Chinese. She is hopeful that this will help her win over the attention of the Chinese judges that will be deciding the outcome of the Miss World contest, held in the city of Hainan this year. Previously, “French Fries” was a model as well as an actress, an MC and additionally the host of the “Good Morning on the Road” news show. The second prize went to Minalda Sarangsok, who is also twenty two years old and studies Humanities in Bangkok University. Meanwhile, third place was awarded to Natawan Ruengrit, who is studying a business administration course at the Ramkamhaeng University. The contest was very closely called and all three of the contestants had great chances.

L et’s Go Lopburi

50

September 15 - October 15 , 2015

T

his month’s Let’s Go takes us to a destination in central Thailand where you can partake in an array of wonderful and truly Thai activities. Lopburi is one of those places that allows you to explore some of the most authentically exotic facets that Thai culture has to offer. From the most casual and relaxed of trips viewing their now famous sunflower fields, to their large and wonderful Pa Sak Jolasid Dam, to feeding the curious and mischievous monkeys at their monthly banquet. First though, let’s travel back in time fourteen hundred years to the seventh century, when Lopburi was part of the illustrious Dvaravati territorial ensemble. This period which lasted seven

hundred years between the sixth and the thirteenth century was a diaspora of chiefdoms that centered itself into loosely gathered territories. Amongst them was of course, Lopburi itself, which gained a further identity of its own when King Kalavarnadish founded it in 648. King Kalavarnadish had come all the way from the then North Western Indian territory of Taxila, which today is part of Pakistan’s Punjabi Rawalpindi district. It quickly consolidated itself to become one of the most important hubs of the Chao Phraya basin. Back then, Lopburi was known as Lavapura. Its etymology breaks down into the terms “Lava” and “Pura”. The former is literally the name of the Son of

Lord Rama and the latter is the Sanskrit word for city. This was already the name of what is currently the Pakistani city of Lahore, as it was believed to have been founded by him. When King Kalavarnadish took reign, he named his kingdom Lavapuri two, in honour and extension of Lava’s name. (Neighbouring Laos is also said to have been named in his honour) History thus adapted the roots for the city and province to eventually be called Lopburi, as it is known in modern day Thailand. Lopburi never lost its importance in the face of history, mentioned in the diary chronicles of the famous Marco Polo, it was an important trade hub with China. Further down the years, when the

Ayutthaya Kingdom was founded in the fourteenth century, this place became the bastion of the rulers’ operation bases. Surely enough, given its administrative importance, king Narai the Great would proceed to make the city the Kingdom’s capital in the seventeenth century and purportedly resided there eight months a year during which he reigned as monarch. As mentioned earlier, Lopburi’s vast sunflower fields are a tranquil and wonderful attraction to indulge in during your trip there. Fields upon fields of the most fully bloomed sunflowers await to dazzle with their flashy yellow tints and hypnotizing central stigma. The best time of the year to see them (as well as the best time of the year to travel to Thailand) starts in the month of November and is the perfect moment to see the lush flora growing in the Lopburi fields. Sunflowers are particularly important to Lopburi because of the fact that they drive much of the economy in the province. Domestic cooking products such as oil is manufactured through them along with other seeds and edibles. The harvest begins during November too and farmers plant them in turns so that there are always fields in full bloom. The amazing sight of these has become a major tourist 52

September 15 - October 15 , 2015

attraction, especially amongst the local Bangkok populace, who only have to travel an average of two hours to witness this marvelous feat of nature. When in Lopburi the best time to view the sunflowers is during the early hours of sunlight, as this is when the flowers rise and shine to face the sun and consolidate their intake of nutrient rich rays. The farmers to which the fields belong charge a marginal price of ten baht to stroll through and take pictures. In your quest to go to this flowery paradise, you can either drive or take the train. The State Railways of Thailand, also known as the SRT, organises inexpensive trips to Lopburi from Bangkok’s main train station. It is not only a much more exotic way of travelling but is also a much more inspiring way of getting there, as the sights are wonderful. If you are planning to go by train, make sure that you book your trip at least a few days in advance, as the journey tends to be popular during the high season. The train also stops at the aforementioned Pa Sak Jolasid Dam, named officially by Thailand’s current king, it is one of Thailand’s major irrigation projects. The dam project has been of great value for farming

benefitting the neighboring population. Lopburi is also very well known due to the number of macaques that wander the streets at free will, making the city a monkey paradise. They are a homogeneous part of the society and are treated with the utmost respect by everyone that lives or visits the place. The monkeys are well treated because it is believed they provide good luck, something that locals hail in great regard. The veneration for them dates back to the Hindu influence that King Kalavarnadish brought into this area, in which the deity Lord Hanuman is vividly worshiped and symbolically represented. Thus, the people in Lopburi (who have always hailed these creatures) decided to set aside a day dedicated entirely to them.

The monthly monkey banquet began in 1989 when Yongyuth Kitwatananusont, owner of the Lopburi Inn, prepared the very first banquet for them. A very great day for the monkey’s indeed! The monthly procession, begins at ten in the morning amongst the ruins of the temples of Khmer architecture and attracts numerous tourists and onlookers. Dances and rituals ensue, along with a speech by the city’s governor who officially inaugurates and invites the apes to feast on the delicacies presented to them. One would be right to assume that given their mischievous reputation and occasional nuisance to the public of Lopburi, they would assault the tables like savages. Quite the contrary however, the macaques are surprisingly well behaved, to the point where they even shy away from the public that observe their delight. But monkeys are monkeys and as you might have guessed, there is indeed a catch, as upon gaining the trust of the public, they proceed to dance and throw the food around in a crazy but amusing frenzy which puts smiles on everyones faces. Lopburi is a wonderful place to visit for a few days to take in the beautiful sights along with its interesting and exotic culture. It is easy to get to and should be added to your “must see” list.

Al Janna means paradise in Arabic and this place is a slice. Try one (or more) of their 10 signature drinks. With names like “Magic Carpet”, “Prince of Persia” and ‘If Tah Ta Sim Sim” don’t be surprised if you find Ali Baba sitting next to you. For a beach bar I was really impressed with the depth of their food menu and counted over 50 menu items available to choose from. On Friday and Saturday evenings they bring in live music and bring out bean bag chairs to lounge on. Marrakesh Hua Hin Resort & Spa is a great escape. If you are coming to Hua Hin then this is the place to check-in to for pampering, relaxation and fun, and not necessarily in that order. I

f you are looking for a special evening with gorgeous surroundings, live music, great food, and plenty of romance and relaxation, Lakehouse Nua, completely fits the bill. Lakehouse Nua sets out to overwhelm its patrons with dishes of amazing taste, texture, and presentation. The tasting menus here are the way to go, offering

a gastronomic road trip through all the best of Thai cuisine. Most menu items are winners, but the real standouts include the Gaeng som Pra Salmon, This stuff was pure fire and flavor in a bowl. Southern Thai Gaeng som is sour, spicy, and teeming with fresh turmeric to give it its vibrantly orange color. Their fresh Thai style

oysters are served with condiments that include prik pao (roasted chili sauce), fried shallots, fried chilies, raw garlic, sauce seafood, and gateen. If you are a fan of raw fish, this one is for you, “Gung Chae Nam Pla is a Thai Marinated Raw Prawn served in a little bowl with seafood sauce. A very simple dish that one can whip up in minutes.

Not only is the food good with plenty of wine choices from their cellar but the atmosphere is excellent. They have live music and a Karaoke zone, the perfect retreat from the big city and with plenty of parking. T

his past August 28th saw the inauguration of one of Bangkok’s (and Thailand’s) most promising malls. With a total floor area of almost half a million square metres and set on 100 rai, this 14 billion baht mega project has again set out to implant the standard of super luxury malls that has been defined by the Central Group. This giant complex gives a new identity to Bangkok’s western section and marks its presence with an array of all possible amenities. It not only has a large cinema complex and a wonderful fitness club, but also boasts of an imperious seven hundred shops and restaurants in which one can find anything one could think of. What really caught headlines in the news was the plan to open an IKEA store within it. This would be the Swedish furnishing company’s second megastore in the kingdom, something exciting, as the first outlet in Bangkok’s Mega Bangna has drawn masses of crowds and has proven to be hugely popular. With a hundred and fifty million baht being spent in order to lure customers, there certainly are high hopes placed on this lavish project. It is for that reason that it has been conveniently placed next to big intersecting highways that provide easy access and fluid passage to the mall. Thus getting there does not involve

sitting in traffic for as many hours as the more centric malls tend to make you do. But if you are more content with taking the metro, there is an equally satisfying option to travel. The Central Westgate is accessibly located by the MRT Purple Line underground, which allows for swift travel devoid of patience-testing traffic lights and jams. Overall, the Central Westgate Mall is set to be a wonderful alternative to the busy and centric shopping complexes of downtown Bangkok and will provide a great stopping point for the many people that inhabit the west side of the city. Be it by indulging in the many different shops and restaurants or be it by taking part in the array of activities that will be made readily available, the Westgate shopping mall is set to establish itself as one of the great places to visit in this exhilarating city.

Palm Hills Golf Club & Residence, A premier development in Hua Hin

P

alm Hills Golf Club and Residence has been one of the premier housing developments in Hua Hin for over 20 years. It has the highest density of luxury homes with some of the largest land plots of any development in the city. Most land plots are one and a half rai, 2400 square meters. The large land plots allow for some very big and expensive haciendas. Unlike most developments in Hua Hin

where your house options are limited to the developer’s show house models, here you can build whatever suits your fancy, within reason of course.

enlarged to a dual carriageway and passes right in front of Palm Hills, making it the desired way to get to and from town on busy weekends.

Palm Hills is located in the now popular North end of Hua Hin with many restaurants, shops and facilities nearby and more popping up on an almost weekly basis. The Canal road which parallels Petchakasem, the main road thru Hua Hin, has now been

When you drive through Palm Hills you will notice that there are a lot of empty land plots. 90+ percent have been purchased as an investment or with a plan to build at a later date. There are a few remaining plots that are still available thru Palm Hills but not many.

In addition to selling land plots, Palm Hills has also built some of their own developments consisting of private houses and condominiums. Their latest development is a contemporary low-rise condominium project called Palm Crescent. Here you have plenty of options with 5 different floor plans in 2 or 3 bedroom configurations. New units as well as resale units can be purchased.

One of the reasons I like Palm Hill’s is because of the tranquility of living on a golf course. It doesn’t matter if you play golf or not, living on a golf course is like living in a giant, beautiful peaceful park. If you are a golfer, Palm Hills is a good course. It’s not the best, Black Mountain, Banyan and perhaps Springfield would vie for that honor, but it is a fun challenging course nonetheless. You have a choice of 3 tees for men plus a

ladies Tee so you can adjust your play to your level and the mandatory caddies are well versed and give great tips, plus they speak perfect English. Another reason I like Palm Hills is that it has a much higher proportion of full time residents living there so you get a real sense of community which is lacking from most housing estates where the homes are primarily used as holiday homes.

the entrance but you also have manned guard stations throughout the project. Additionally there are security guards patrolling in vehicles and golf carts. Hua Hin is by no means a dangerous place but having that extra level of security is comforting.

When talking to Palm Hill’s owners one of the things they frequently mention is the security they have on the development, with many proclaiming it’s the best in Hua Hin. Here you have the requisite guard station checking cars at

74

September 15 - October 15 , 2015

From an investment perspective, I believe Palm Hills will appreciate in value at a faster rate than almost all developments in Hua Hin in the next few years. With the building boom of residential developments happening between Hua Hin’s airport and Cha Am, the next city to our north, there will be an exponential growth in restaurants, stores and facilities. There will be no

delineation between Hua Hin and Cha Am anymore, it will all become one with Palm Hill’s at the near center. Location, location, location, as they say. Just like what’s happening now in Phuket where there is a spike in luxury home prices, buyers in Hua Hin will see not only the ability to buy or build a large luxury home on a very large land plot but their home will be close to everything they need. No longer having to travel into what was Hua Hin’s center, thus saving time and frustration. Almost all homes and land plots come with a lifetime membership to the Palm Hills Golf Club and their separate Sports

Club, although “lifetime” really means 30 years and “family membership” means a husband, wife and two children. If the house and land are owned by a company then different rules apply. If you are buying a re-sale home or land plot you will still get a full 30 years but there will be a transfer fee paid to Palm Hills to change the membership owners. The Palm Hills Golf Course Club House contains a pro shop, locker rooms, a main dining room and an outdoor restaurant for light meals and drinks, the 19th hole as they say. The separate Sports Club is quite large and contains outdoor tennis courts, Indoor badminton courts, squash courts, a fitness center, snooker tables, table tennis, a large outdoor swimming pool and a very reasonably priced restaurant. Palm Hills Golf Club & Residence is one of the finest areas to live in Hua Hin.
