Dear Reader, As I’ve mentioned many times before, one of the great things about living in a resort city like Hua Hin is that there are so many festival’s and fun activities to partake in. One of my favorites, the Asian Beach Polo Championships, is set to take place on the 25th of this month. Also known as the Princess Pa’s Cup, this is the only Asian Polo event to be held on a beach. Read how you can join this daytime and nighttime thrilling event on page 26. Last November we held our very first Red Carpet Wine and Charity Gala Dinner. During the evening we crowned Miss Hua Hin C.D.L. and her Court. C.D.L. stands for Charity and Dog Lover. One of our passions is helping under privileged children as well as Hua Hin’s homeless and helpless street dog population. Miss Hua Hin C.D.L. and her entourage are spending their year assisting us in our charitable efforts. We thank and acknowledge their work by featuring them on this month’s cover and on follow up pages starting on page 6. Another great annual event recently held was the Cha Am International Kite Festival. Those who came were treated to some great sights including a whale kite that was 3 meters high and ten meters long. View the fun on page 16. Next, we introduce you to Khun Nunthinee Tanner. Khun Nunthinee is a multi-faceted successful business woman, art collector, socialite and Thailand’s first female polo player. Read about her passion for polo and how she’s used it to raise money for worthy charitable causes on page 22. Who says only women can participate in beauty pageants? On page 66 we take you to Bangkok for the second annual Mr. Global Competition where hunky men from 21 different countries competed against one another to vie for the highly prized title. On page 62 we take you to the catwalk to view the 2015 Spring / Summer collection of Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana which she markets under her SIRIVANNAVARI brand. Finally, our HOT Hua Hin Property feature takes us to the Veyla Beachfront residences in Cha Am. Their last beachfront development in Hua Hin won them a highly coveted Thailand Property Award and their newest project is just as stunning. Check out the home you’ll want to move into on page 80. Thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

L ET’S MEET Britta Kutz
Hua Hin has kept its “Thainess”. In addition Hua Hin offers a great variety of things to do and I also appreciate the proximity to Bangkok. For me it is the perfect combination of a laid back Thai fishing village and a modern beach resort offering all amenities one can desire. What is your favorite restaurant and why? In terms of dining I openly admit that I am very spoilt, living in the Resort and having the choice of award winning Thai, Italian and a Beachfront Seafood Restaurants every day. That is probably why I love to go outside and eat in small local restaurants. My favorite is the Thai restaurant of the family of one of our employees located on soi 51 called Si Sahai, Hua Pla Mor Fai”. What do you like to do in your free time and why? Most importantly spending time with my family. And there is actually not one particular thing that we like to do. We really enjoy the variety here in Hua Hin and we like to different things. From visiting the great new Vana Nava Water Park, over spending a nice Sunday afternoon at the Hua Hin vineyard or taking my daughter on a play date with her friends at the great playground of Electric Mango to just relaxing somewhere by the beach - we totally take advantage of all the great things Hua Hin has to offer.
What is your full name and age? My name is Britta Kutz and I turned 39 three times ;) What is your current Job Position? I am General Manager of the beautiful InterContinental Hua Hin Resort How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? I have been living in Hua Hin since September 2012 and I visited once before we moved here What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? I knew that the hotel that I will manage is absolutely stunning and I already knew I would be lucky to work with fantastic people. I knew that, because I visited Hua Hin for vacation in November 2011 when I was still working at the InterContinental in Singapore. I fell in love with this place in an instant and developed the plan to work and live here one day. What do you like most about your profession? I love the versatility of my job. Every day I get to interact with many different nationalities and people with very diverse back grounds. In my job it is very hard to develop a routine and I like that. I do have a daily plan but most 12

likely I will amend it a few times during the day depending on the requirements of the people around me and unexpected situations unfolding. Another aspect I love is to learn so much about different cultures and to share what I learned with our guests from abroad. Especially when guests come to Thailand for the first time I love to see how they experience the culture and hospitality and to see them falling in love with it. It is very fulfilling to be a part of this experience being their host. What do you like least about your profession? Saying good bye. Hospitality is a profession of constant movement. Be it really nice guests that stay with us and we have to farewell them, or colleagues that move on to their next assignment or me and my family moving on to the next adventure. As much as I love moving to different places to make new experiences and meet new friends – the good-bye part is always tough. Therefore I am very thankful for modern technologies that make it much easier to stay in touch. What do you like most about Hua Hin? Most of all I like that, despite of all the residents and visitors from abroad,
What would you recommend to newcomers to do in Hua Hin and why? Congratulate yourself because you have come to one of the best places in Thailand. Enjoy and please pay respect to the traditions and the people of this wonderful country. Relax, take it easy be open minded and let the Thai culture and the charm of Hua Hin capture you. One other, more practical, tip: If you don’t play Golf yet, start here. I don’t know any other place that has the density of so many great golf courses like Hua Hin. Unfortunately I still haven’t managed to listen to my own advise, but it’s still on the to do list. Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you? As a child I sang in a radio commercial for a Dutch potato brand …. This will be even more surprising for people who know me well, as I really cannot sing! What is the most outlandish thing you have ever done and why? Working in the hotel business for over 20 years now, I had the pleasure of experiencing many weird situations. One of the most awkward and memorable ones was probably to arrange a shopping tour for Michael Jackson in a shopping mall after opening hours and then being the only persons in the mall together with him and his followers

Cha Am International Kite Festival 2015
K
ites are one of the most simple yet graceful items to have been invented to date. As they take flight, their majestic movement is enough to captivate even the most unassuming person’s attention. The former is exactly what happened in Cha Am on March 28th and the 29th as the annual Cha Am Kite Festival once again took place on the beach. The first thing noticed upon entering the Festival was the large display board which recounted the history of the kite. Some say kites were first invented around two thousand years ago in ancient China however others dispute that fact alleging that they were already in use a millennium before Christ. Kites are extremely popular in Thailand, especially since the monarchy became interested in them in the 13th century. King Rama Five was the first to organise a kite tournament which he held annually at the palace grounds, allowing the populace to come and showcase the beautiful kites they had created. King Rama Six took it a step further and founded a Kite Association. This year’s festival did not disappoint with a large flourishing display of colorful kites of all types and sizes. As the blowing wind gradually lifted them into the sky, those of us in attendance marvelled at their size, detail and complexity. Tents of all kinds were erected, in which one could go and partake in different activities. One of the most popular was the Kite Workshop tent where you could learn how to make your own kite. Volunteer staff were on hand to explain the different types of kites that could be made and provided the tools with which to construct them. With a combination of A4 paper, wooden sticks, ropes, decorations, scissors, cutters, tape, and hole punchers, each person had the opportunity to make their own model and give it flight amongst the rest of the giant entries. If you were not so fond of making it yourself, there were a variety for sale too, ranging from classic rhomboids to “Angry Birds”. All models in the air had stunningly unique characteristics and represented a number of nations, from Indonesia and Malaysia to Taiwan and of course, Thailand. The depiction of water animals

was the most prominent, with distinctive figures of cat fish, sharks, squids, octopi, eels and one that was hard to miss: a humongous whale measuring ten metres in length and three in height. As this giant took to the skies, jaws began dropping throughout. However, water dwellers were not the only ones made into kites; animals such as the bear, the crocodile or the centipede were present too.
As a whole, the Cha Am Kite Festival was a marvellous celebration, well deserving of a visit, especially since it was all free. The atmosphere was relaxed and peaceful and the scenery was priceless, something that gave the entire Festival a very joyful touch. If you missed it, put it on your calendar for next year, you and your loved ones will not be disappointed!

Anantara Wine Dinner
O
n Thursday evening March 12th, Anantara Hua Hin’s Executive Chef Hans Peter Held worked his magic once again presenting a special dinner menu paired with wines from Italy. The exceptional evening started with cocktails and appetizers at the Anantara’s Sala Siam Bar where guests conversed whilst listening to live smooth jazz. After cocktail hour everyone moved down to the Bill Bensley designed Baan Thalia Italian restaurant where plenty of wine glasses were waiting at everyone’s table. Chef Held started his epicurean delight with Salad of Duck Confit, which was paired with a 2010 vintage Dolcetto D’alba Superiore, a mediumbodied red, bursting with aromas of ripe red berries. Next to enchant was a deepfried risotto served over a tomato basil mousse along with a BARBERA D’ALBA Superiore “Bricco Airoli”, Piedmont, Italy, 2010. Barbera is a dark-skinned wine grape variety found in several Italian wine regions, including its native Piedmont. Several important wine critics have rated this Barbera d’Alba wine highly: Wine Spectator gave the 2010 vintage a score of 90. Next out of the Chef’s kitchen was a Bollito Misto which consisted of slow cooked pork, beef, chicken and sausage with a smoked herb infusion, mostarda and salsa verde form. Poured was a Nebbiolo,

Langhe, Italy, 2010, described as a clear, bright, purple-red with aromas fragrant and wide open, exalting the fruit of the wine. The main entrée of the evening was a Roasted Lamb Cutlet in bread crust on garlic mousse, grilled vegetable and lamb juice. This dish was paired with a BAROLO “Buon Padre”, Piedmont, Italy, 2007, a light ruby red wine with a bouquet of spices, dried fruit and wild flowers. With the courses devoured and the entrée consumed, along with many emptied glasses, Chef Held served a Cheese Soufflé with onion jam and grilled pear on honey thyme sabayon for desert. The final wine chosen for the evening was a BAROLO RISERVA “La Volta”, Piedmont, 2006, a limited-production Barolo Riserva produced only in the best vintages from the estateowned La Volta vineyard. A big wine with elegant notes of preserved fruit accentuated by aromas of spices, underbrush, and licorice. The Anantara offers only a few wine dinners throughout the year and when they do they quickly sell-out. If you are an aficionado of great food and fine wine you’ll be remised if you don’t add yourself to the reservation list at your next opportunity.

Khun Nunthinee Tanner, Thailand’s first female polo player
22
Apr 15 - May 15 , 2015
K
hun Nunthinee Tanner is a woman of many facets. She is Managing Director of LBG Limited which represents Burberry, Thalgo, Valmont and many other brands here in Thailand. She manages the Paris Spas and has recently taken over the Metropolitan Museum of Art store growing it to 3 locations. She is an art collector and Thailand’s first female polo player. Recently, HOT Magazine had the distinct pleasure of sitting down with Khun Nunthinee to discuss her passion for Polo. Khun Nunthinee first started riding
horses when she was 14 and has been playing polo for about the same number of years. An active promoter of the sport, she and fellow polo enthusiast Harold Link, who is Chairman of the B Grimm group of companies and President of the Southeast Asian Equestrian Federation, built the Thai Polo and Equestrian Club near Pattaya in 2005. A world class facility on over 2,000 rai of beautifully landscaped grounds, the Club boasts three international-standard polo playing fields, two practice grounds and stabling for over 200 horses.

In 2007, renowned Australian designer Wayne Copping was given the task of establishing an international standard equestrian cross-country course which would be suitable as a venue for international events, such as the Southeast Asian Games. An Eventing course was designed by New Zealander John Nicholson, and this was used to host the inaugural Asia Eventing Championships. With the addition of an endurance course and an international Derby facility, the Thai Polo and Equestrian Club is now recognized as the largest multi-functional polo and equestrian operation in all of Asia. The veterinary and quarantine facilities are second-to-none in the region, with a leading Argentinian vet acting as general manager of the complex, overseeing Argentinian, French and British as well as local farriers, trainers, and stable staff. The Thai Polo and Equestrian Club also includes three clubhouses and the “Chukka Bar” which is a re-creation of the famous polo bar at the Langham Hotel in London. In fact, the original bar of the London Langham Club was purchased by Khun Nunthinee and reassembled at the Chukka Bar when the Langham went through an extensive remodel. According to Khun Nunthinee, “The General Manager of the Langham had recently arrived after managing the Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok. We had become friends during his tenure at the Oriental and he told me the next time I was in London to stay at his Hotel. I did and one day he took me on a tour of the hotel describing the big remodel that was planned. When I asked what would happen to the bar and all of the memorabilia from the famous Polo lounge he said they would either be sold or trashed. I immediately said I’ll buy it! He asked, buy what? I said all of it. His staff meticulously packed everything in a container and shipped it to me here in Thailand. Once I opened the container I was amazed at the history of it all.” In addition to providing the contents for the Chukka Bar she also personally designed the magnificent clubhouses. Through a chance meeting with Dr. Kris Chatamra, the Queen’s personal physician, they decided to raise funds for the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer by putting on The Queen’s Cup Pink Polo Tournament. Now in its seventh year, this much loved ladies charitable tournament is held at the Thai Polo & Equestrian Club. The Pink theme was chosen because that is the color that symbolizes the fight against breast cancer. Each year the clubhouse is decked out in pink and the spectators are encouraged to wear the color to show their support. According to Khun Nunthinee, “We hope that our event increases awareness of the threat that 24

Breast Cancer poses to many women and at the same time we hope that our event will also introduce a new generation to the exciting game of polo.” Being the first Thai woman to play polo, she says she wants to combine her passion for the sport with the ability to help women. “I am proud to be the first Thai woman to play polo. I think that it makes a good statement that women can excel given the opportunity to make a choice to do something with a passion. I want to share this opportunity with other women, which is why I think it is
important to let people know about the tournament so that more women can join in this enthralling sport. Also, I want to assist women in need. Breast cancer is a disease that targets women. Given this opportunity, I think it is important to help women as much as I can. The donation to the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer is a good starting point in helping women afflicted with the disease. As much as playing polo can enhance the confidence in a woman, I want to be able to help women who are affected to regain their confidence and self-worth.”
Here in Hua Hin on April 25th, Khun Nunthinee along with Harold Link and Khun Suwat Liptapanlop are for the sixth year organizing the Asian Beach Polo Championship, on the beach in front of the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort. The only beach polo tournament in Asia, the event is also known as the Princess Pa’s Cup and benefits the Kamlangjai Project which was initiated by Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol. The Kamlangjai Project is a rehabilitation program that focuses on development and strengthening the willpower of female inmates and children being born to them in correctional institutions and to prepare them to be ready to live a new life outside prison. As busy as Khun Nunthinee is, she still finds time on the weekends to organize kids polo and a horse riding program for Autistic children. When asked if she had ever seen another favorite Hua Hin Polo event (until it moved to Bangkok last year), The King’s Cup Elephant Polo tournament she said “Yes I have seen Elephant Polo. I think it great fun but it cannot to be compared horse Polo, It’s completely different game all together.”

Putahracsa and Casanova Wines, Welcome to our Passion Dinner
A
very special wine dinner was held at the Putahracsa’s Oceanside beachfront Restaurant On April 1st. Even though it was on a date known as April’s Fools Day, the Putahracsa’s Executive chef Khun Wittawat wasn’t fooling around when he prepared seriously delicious dishes to the delight of all those who attended. The five courses that were served were each expertly paired with a wine from the Casanova vineyards of Talca, Chile. Four generations of the Casanova family have worked the family business started by Eliseo Casanova at the end of the 19th Century. Guests were treated to hearing where and how the wines are produced from Hugo Casanova, great grandson of the founder, who was in attendance. The evening started at the Mondo Vino wine bar across the street from Oceanside for Aperitif’s and Canapé’s while conversing with friends, new and old. Once moved and seated guests were treated to an appetizer of Crab Maki consisting of fresh crab, avocado, and tomato with a cucumber dressing. This was paired with a Hugo Casanova “Reserva” Sauvignon Blanc 2012. Next from the kitchen came a Scallop and Prawn dish with spiced lentil’s served “Romesco style”. This dish was paired with a Casanova “Antano Reserv” Chardonay 2012.
Following the seafood theme guests were treated to Lobster Bolognese, stuffed in a Pacheri pasta. Poured with this course was a Casanova “Reserve” Cabernet Sauvignon 2013. Greek Taverna
I
t is in very few occasions that one is able to feel as if he is in middle of the Mediterranean coast enjoying a succulent and traditional Hellenic meal. However, this is exactly what happened when our Hot Magazine team was invited to Hua Hin’s very own Greek Taverna restaurant. This cosy little establishment, a few blocks from the Hilton, transports your senses to the heart of this iconic country. Once seated we felt like we were overlooking the white houses of Mykonos’ landscape, something that already set the mood. Classic Greek music led by the strumming of a gentle Laouto welcomed us and continued to play throughout our stay.

The first plate to arrive was an impressive Greek Salad complete with cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, olives and feta cheese dressed in a lemon garlic sauce. This was a very subtle dish; it brought a fresh taste to the mouth with a zesty sourness from the dressing, which was beautifully balanced with the feta cheese – for me this was the highlight of the dish: creamy, soft and light to the palate. In the midst of this entre, we were served Greece’s most typical aperitif beverage: a cold glass of Ouzo. Ouzo is a transparent anise-flavoured liquor that is typically mixed with water and turns cloudy, with a hint of light blue due to the reaction with it. It was an incredibly intricate
taste, dry to palate with an expressive but not clingy hint of anise, which left a very pleasant aftertaste. This drink set a wonderful tone to the evening, a must-try if you are a fan of experimental beverages. Then came the Musaka. This very typical Greek casserole was nicely presented, with a mix of pork, beef and potato in an eggplant shell and a béchamel topping. On the side was a serving of garlic bread and a salad in a lettuce shell. This was a very well balance dish, it felt original, homemade, the type of food grandmothers cook and grandchildren crave. Soft and creamy in texture and with a resounding aftertaste. A great delight.
But if I should speak of delight, I’d be foolish not to praise the Pikiliaskaras platter that was brought to us as a main course. This was the ultimate combination of Greek-styled meat. Consisting of a mixed grill, it contained a succulent assortment of spiced pork and chicken on skewers, the famous Greek Bifteki and some baked potato wedges. This was presented along with a plate of creamy Tzatziki and a round of pita bread that truly delighted the senses. I began the exploration of this dish by trying the two types of meat bruschetta: as I tucked into the meats, I noticed how tender these were, quickly dissolving across my palate and filling my mouth with a smoky aroma that permeated throughout the bite. One could say the
same of the Bifteki, which brought a beautiful and more defined taste, with the typical strength of an impeccably seasoned burger. The potatoes gave it a great backing, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside: I could already see they were confectioned to perfection through their wonderful golden colour and wrinkling skin, the taste just confirmed the predictions. What gave it the edge however was the Tzatziki: an incredibly rich dish of yogurt combined with an assortment of cucumber and garlic dill. Combined with the pita bread dip, it presented a beautiful balance of cream, zest, tanginess, freshness and delight – a real treat. Finally, we were presented with a
delicious sweet ending: for dessert, it was Baclavas. These traditional sticky, sweet, flaky and nutty rolls were a truly delightful way of ending the meal. Slightly crunchy and thoroughly aromatic, this honey-hinted treat made sure to entice me and my urges to return in the near future. As a whole, the experience at this beautifully decorated and Mediterranean-styled restaurant was well worth the visit. The staff were thoroughly helpful and attentive and our evening was truly delightful. You do not have to go to Greece anymore; you can just go to the Greek Taverna.

Dusit Post Workout Revival Treatment
T
hailand has no shortage of luxury spas but one of the very best is the Dusit Thani’s Devarana Spa. Recognizing the important role that exercise plays in a healthy body they have created a new combination of massages, which it has compiled into a package called the “The Post Workout Revival”. Keeping fit is something incredibly pivotal to maintaining a healthy body and this becomes progressively important, as we grow older. For aging baby-boomers, exercising can prolong good and sustained health and grants an optimum physiological state. It can equally relieve stress, aid circulation and maintain the flexibility that is so often lost thru the years. Stretching before and

after exercise (or as exercise itself) also does that, not only by keeping muscles loose but also by preventing their atrophy and ensuring the strength of their fibre. This new package focuses itself on the revitalisation of the body after strenuous exercise, a treat ideal for a range of ages, from the avid young sportsman to the senior exercise fan: the Post Workout Revival serves these purposes. When choosing this package you will begin with a soothing experience of entering the massage room to the tune of melodic harps and flutes, your blood pressure immediately drops as you take in the heavenly surroundings and your mind drifts away from the thoughts of your daily stress.
Then, comes the first point of contact from the masseuse. The initial procedure to this package is the Devarana Signature Massage, which consists of a unique combination of styles mixed into one: the first is a strong Ayurveda, Thai and Shiatsu application with Swedish aromatherapy inspirations. This provides the individual with an optimum balance between stress releasing ancient Siamese techniques and Japanese blends of pressure point stimulation. This signature massage is accompanied by the provision of a bowl of hot water filled with kaffir limes that emit an enticing aroma, ideal for the respiratory cleansing of the lungs. As we go through the hour and a half of this wonderful combination of
massages, we go onto the facial stage: this is culminated by the application of a rejuvenating Cooling Aloe Gel Face Mask that brings out the best of the dermis. This is a process in which the pores are opened and the oiliness and impureness of the face is extracted through the cleansing and regenerative properties of the face pack. This is also beneficial to lower the temperature of the skin, as the refreshing and chilling properties of the Aloe Vera act as an agent to reduce the heat of the body, something ideal after having gone through vigorous and tiring physical activity. The exfoliating properties of this facemask leave the individual completely ready for the next stage of the package’s treat. Having gone through the body stimulus
stage and the facial reinvigoration process, we are left with the last step to provide an optimum workout recovery program. To do this, the individual is first presented with an aromatic herbal bath of scented water in which he is submerged for a thirty-minute treatment that rinses out all the impurities in the skin and cleanses the dermis so that it remains fresh and optimally conditioned. Then, as you exit with rejuvenated pores, a cold rain shower is in order. This latter and final stage provides the opportunity to relieve the soreness in the muscles, provide tone to the refreshed skin and widen the blood vessels in order to prevent the body from suffering muscle and tissue injuries. This ideal way of rejuvenating the body
is of great use for a range of people: from those who like physical outdoor activities to those who just partake in light exercise. Thailand is infamous for sending its sport-avid visitors and sunbathers home with a characteristic sunburn, but with the Post Workout Revival, the solution to this problem has been found. Overall the experience at the Dusit Thani’s Devarana Spa is always a moment to savour, something that will grant the body an incredible treat. Now, with the addition of the revitalising “Post Work-Out Revival” the pleasure only heightens.

March Multi Culti
H
ua Hin’s favorite expat socialite, Lizzy (AKA Dizzy, Bizzy Lizzie) held her monthly Multi Culti dinner at the Anantara Hua Hin Resort on Saturday March 28th. This months honored guests were 96 year old Mrs. Connie Heinecke who recently had a birthday, Mr. Mike Fijas, General Manager of Hua Hin’s new one billion baht water park Vana Nava and Khun Thaweesin Pattanapiras, a Member of the Provincial Parliament and representative of Prachuap Kirikhan. The evening started with a bit of a
calamity as Lizzy had injured her back and it was touch and go as to whether she could attend. Additionally, the booked Master of Ceremonies had to cancel at the very last moment so there was a frantic search for an M.C... The Anantara’s Executive Assistant Manager Daniel Smith stepped up to the plate and did a “Masterful” job keeping the event moving. Sometimes we forget that the monthly Multi Culti is a charitable event because everyone has so much fun. Money raised from ticket and raffle sales goes to help support Lizzy’s many charity projects. One of her main charities is the
Power of Love’s Children’s Orphanage in Kho Takiab which is currently under construction. The Raffle prizes were particularly good this month with guests having the opportunity to win room stays, dinner’s and spa treatments from many of Hua Hin’s 5 star hotels. For more information on Multi Culti events which are open to all nationalities please email Lizzy directly at; lizzy.huahin@mycitythailand.com

Patong Beach
f there is one thing that Thailand is uncontestably famous for, it is the beauty of its paradisiac beaches. Very few locations in the world have them in the way that the country’s biggest island does. That island is Phuket. Well known for the amount of tourists it attracts at all seasons of the year, this southern Thai province has the ability to make anyone who’s lucky enough to venture its lands, fall madly in love with it. Today it bustles with people, activity and tourism, but what do we know about Phuket’s history? It seems that Phuket had always been a place of interest for foreign eyes, even as far as almost four hundred years ago. Back then, English, French and Dutch explorers and merchants came stumbling across this paradise of beauty. However, their attention was not placed on the potential sunbathing spots or the fresh coconuts. Back then, the island, which was known as Jung Ceylon, proved to be a succulent reserve of tin and attracted large offers of trade by opportunistic European nations. The French were the first to yield the profits, as a ship from the East India Company left packed with tin in the latter end of the seventeenth century. King Narai appointed a French governor in the island to reduce Anglo-Dutch influence, but this resulted in a monopoly of the metal. The French were expelled as the Siamese Revolution got on its way and this restored national control of the resources. The Burmese invaded the island a century later but were defeated upon a month of their capture thanks to an army of valiant ladies put together by Than Phu Ying Chan, who was then revered and given royal titles for their heroic efforts. Today, Phuket has flourished having put its tin production behind and letting modern modes of income take over, mainly rubber plantations and tourism. This tourism is due to the enticing beaches which bless the island, all of which are hard to choose from, especially since the current government has focused on giving the beaches back to the people, getting rid of the businesses that were encroaching on it. We start with Patong Beach, which is the most iconic beach resort in the whole of Phuket. It attracts large amounts of crowds due to its signature nightlife, boisterous atmosphere and infinite beer and dance bars. Patong is not the place to go to find peace, quiet or genuine Thai culture as it is strongly oriented towards the thrill-seeker. If you’re looking for a great party, head to Patong, your urges will be thoroughly pleased. If you are looking for something a little more family oriented however, head to Kata Beach. Kata’s beach is a beautiful stretch of sand and the favourite destination of many families. It appeals because of the many palm trees, wonderful restaurants and fun filled nightlife. Kata is popular too amongst surfers, who between the months of May and November are on the search of good waves. The difference
from Patong is that Kata at night is not as crazy as the former; it can accommodate a tranquil evening for a family or a night out for a couple without it seeming too intruding. All in all, it is a great location to go find the peace one doesn’t see in Patong. If you are looking for a more upscale beach to tan your skin a golden brown then Surin Beach is for you. Surin is known as the Millionaire’s Row due to the many luxurious abodes that line up along the coast. Amongst the resorts for the wealthy are the Amanpuri, the Twinpalms and the Surin. Overlooking
the Andaman Sea are the locations of the million dollar plus villas that populate the top spots of the hill. The water is a beautiful turquoise and the beaches are of white fine sand. It attracts many tourists as well as high-end Thais and is filled with sites that have enticed the eyes of fancy restaurants and bars, who have seen the opportunity of appealing to the demands of the luxurious life. Surin will definitely leave you with a sense of mingling with the elite. Whilst Surin brings you the very best of Phuket’s fancy life, many times, what appeals the most to the visitor is the

opportunity to find himself surrounded of the most traditional and simple ways of coastal life. If that is what fascinates you about locations, say no more. Six kilometres away from the town of Cherng Talay is Bang Tao beach. Bang Tao provides you with all the local charm that one can think of, mostly because of the dynamics of the people there, many of whom still live in the same way their ancestors formerly did. You will find it common to witness Thai residents engaging in activities such as fishing, rubber tapping and farming. This stretch of beach is one of the few locations where you can actually still feel that the
Karon Beach
Kata Noi Beach
beach is exclusively for you, due to the relatively few amount of tourists. The area has of course been touched slightly by commercialisation. One of the sections of the beach features one of Asia’s largest resort complexes by the name of Laguna Phuket, which features several holiday venues such as the Angsana Laguna Phuket, Dusit Thani Laguna, Outrigger Laguna Phuket beach, Laguna Holiday Club and Banyan Tree Phuket. All in all, Bang Tao is definitely a unique beach to explore, one that will grant you a relaxing atmosphere to bask in. Finally we come down to Karon beach. Karon is on the western coast of the island and is Phuket’s third longest stretch of sand, which gathers a great amount of popularity. In fact, this beach is the second most favoured holiday spot for visiting tourists after Patong, telling you something of the optimum balance of conditions at this spot. That really is the key to Karon: it bears activities of all kinds, in a mix that makes it a perfect place for people of all kinds to gather. Because of its width, people that venture to Karon never feel excessively hassled by the multitude, as beachgoers spread across the large space. A famous activity in Karon due to its great scenery is snorkelling. The water is pristine and the fauna is of a great and interesting range. Diving is also popular in Karo, especially so because the sea is calm and currents are not too strong. Karon is distributed in three main areas, but the most attractive one is Karon Beach Road, which features a variety of restaurants and shops parallel to the sand. Enter further down towards Luang Poh Chuan road and you will find the more beach restaurants of higher cache and bars of great popularity amongst partygoers. Regardless of what beach you are in, Phuket is a wonderful destination in which to spend your holiday. More so now that Songkran is approaching, since the festival is enthusiastically celebrated there. The beaches will be an integral part of the celebration and will feature numerous parties, games and activities to be part of as the traditional New Year gets on its way. Patong will be a particularly good spot to be in, as this will feature the wilder side of matters, something that Thais particularly like to take part in during these joyful dates. Make sure to always leave all electrical belongings in your room when you take to the street between the 13th and the 15th, the celebrations will spare none and the water will splash anyone brave enough to be walking the pavement. So what are you waiting for? Phuket is as a whole, the place to be at for anybody who wishes for a great time. Pack light, take your sunscreen, sunglasses, towel and hat and go explore the thrills of this inviting island.

er Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, daughter of the Crown Prince of Thailand unveiled her SIRIVANNAVARI Spring / Summer 2015 Collection on the 19th of March at Siam Paragon in Bangkok. Inspired by the Napoleonic uniform mixed with details from Neoclassic and Roman Era, the SIRIVANNAVARI Spring / Summer 2015 collection is unique in the structures, garments and the tailoring technique developed by the princess as
well as her illustration of lucky charms from the Neoclassical period with a Dadaism twist reflecting on the signature prints of the season. According to Princess Sirivannavari, “For the latest collection, I created a variety of new structures. For instance, the shoulders are rounded, echoing the shoulder line of a vintage French jacket. Both short and long length jackets have geometric pattern. The sleeves of women’s jacket developed from men’s jacket. This collection also features
the so-called ‘Beehive Smock “. The signature smock is mixed with pleated to create the asymmetrical skirt. Another highlight is the interchangeable collar, which can be used as an accessory with other looks “the princess added. The Spring / Summer 2015 women collection consists of 40 looks. In addition to the unique silhouette, the spotlight also shines on the splendid Dadaism prints featuring those symbols from Neoclassic period such as eagle, bee, leopard, dove, horse, olive wreath and Apr 15 - May 15 , 2015

nyone in the hospitality industry will tell you running a restaurant is difficult. In the States, 60% of all new restaurants fail within their first year with 80% closing within 5 years. Restaurants that are still open after 10 or 20 years are doing something right. In Bangkok, the Fireplace Grill is one of the country’s most respected steakhouses and has become a dining institution, so much so that next year they will have the rare honor of celebrating their 50th year serving the finest prime beef, freshest seafood and all complimented by an outstanding wine cellar. Located within Bangkok’s InterContinental Hotel, the Fireplace Grill steakhouse has an elegant dining room with a sophisticated show kitchen. The main dining room is cozy, seating just 65 along with two private dining rooms that seat 10 and 13 respectively. Recently they brought on board Sebastian Reischer as the restaurant’s new Chef de Cuisine. With extensive international experience, most recently with Thailand’s Iron Chef, Ian Pongthawat Chalermkittichaiat, Sebastian has applied his considerable talent and flair to enhancing this Bangkok dining institution. Chef Sebastien will be changing the menu seasonally to make sure they are only using the freshest of ingredients. Serving exceptional and delicious Kobe beef imported from Japan the Grill is open for lunch during the week and dinner every day. With 49 years of practice the service is so smooth it’s barely noticed, and it is easy to lose track of time enjoying a meal here. We recently had the pleasure of dining in one of the private dining rooms and it wasn’t until we were walking out that I looked at my watch and realized we were seated for 3 hours enjoying all the different courses ordered.
When perusing the menu I noticed that in addition to ordering a la carte they have set menus for lunch. Depending upon how hungry you are you can order 2, 3 or 4 courses priced from 799 to 999 baht ++ per person. Main Courses on the set menu include Roasted seabass with a parmesan herb crust, Roasted chicken and mushroom roulade potato fondant and Glazed pork belly. One of the most ordered dishes on the a la carte menu is the Duet of Tajima Wagyu consisting of a grilled sirloin and 24 hour braised short ribs with foie gras croutons, garlic mashed potato and a carrot fondant. At 2,500 ++ it’s one of the priciest items on the menu but the price has not diminished its popularity. Another popular pick on the menu is their Roasted Prime Rib of beef which has been on the menu since they opened their doors 49 years ago. Dependent upon your hunger you can order the Contemporary cut at 240 grams or the Classic cut at 350 grams. The Prime Rib is served with Yorkshire pudding, kipfler roasted potatoes and freshly grated horseradish. If you are more of a seafood person do not worry, there is plenty here for you including Grilled Maine Lobster, Norwegian Snow Fish and Dover Sole. A household name among Bangkok’s High Society families, the Fireplace Grill has for years been a trustworthy destination for those seeking premium charcoal-grilled steak, the freshest seafood and classic French dishes. Reduce aging with Botox
W
hen I was young, I remember my grandmother telling me that inside she felt like a girl in her 20’s until she stepped near a mirror and saw an old woman looking back at her. That statement made no sense to me until I reached my 50’s and began feeling exactly the same. One of the most defining features of the baby boomer generation is our love of youth and our desire to reinvent ourselves. As we grew up, anything having to do with aging was pushed into the background. But if there is one thing we haven’t been able to conquer as a generation it’s time, the clock still continues to tick. Thanks to the baby boomers desire to look young and beautiful, beauty, anti-aging and health-related products and services are flooding the market. Market research firm Global Industry Analysts projects that in the U.S. alone, a boomer-fueled consumer base striving to
keep signs of aging at bay will push the market for anti-aging products to more than $114 billion this year. Botox treatments are the most commonly performed, minimally invasive cosmetic procedure because they make you look younger. The fact that there is no incision, scarring, stitches or cuts involved makes Botox much better than other invasive cosmetic treatments. A Botox injection session usually takes just 10-15 minutes for most people and requires little or no anesthesia. For me, the attendant cooled the area around my eyes and forehead with an ice pack. Once I let the Dr. know the area was chilled she would make the injections. The needle doesn’t go deep. I could feel it but the pain was minimal to nonexistent. Injections of Botox are suited for people who want to see the benefits of plastic surgery without the complications

and hassle. Botox is most popular for minimizing or removing wrinkles around your eyes, mouth and forehead. The effects of Botox are usually noticed in three to five days and last up to six months. So if you don’t like it, you can welcome those wrinkles back. If you like it, repeat the injection process and reclaim your youth once again. Botox is a trade name for botulinum toxin, which comes in the form of a purified protein. Botulinum toxin A is the most commonly used form with a few thousand articles supporting its use in scientific and medical literature. The mechanism of action for botulinum toxin A is really quite simple. It is injected into the facial muscles and, within a few hours, it attaches itself to the nerve endings of the motor muscles, thereby affecting the nerve transmission to these muscles. There is no loss of sensory feeling at all during the time that botulinum toxin A is effective. Once these motor nerve endings are interrupted, the muscles cannot contract. When the muscle does not contract, the dynamic motion that causes wrinkles in the skin will then cease. The only reason there are wrinkles in the skin in the first place is because the muscle is moving underneath it, thereby these are called dynamic wrinkles. Approximately three to five days after treatment, the skin above these motor muscles becomes nice and smooth. The length of time Botox lasts is dependent on various factors including the amount of botulinum toxin A injected, metabolic activity of the patient and lifestyle choices, which may cause the Botox treatment not to last as long. The clinic I went to for Botox injections, and can recommend, is NonNey’s Clinic in Bangkok. Dr. NonNey received her medical license at Thammasat University. She then went on to receive her Certificate of Acupuncture and Certificate of Botox training as well as a certificate in Homeopathy. Her main clinic is in Petchabun and her Bangkok clinic is only opened on Fridays. Botox is just one of many treatments she can perform to make you look younger. Botox is not the legendary fountain of youth, but it is an inexpensive way (in comparison to cosmetic surgery) to rid your face of those wrinkles you have become accustomed to seeing when staring in a mirror.
