Hua Hin’s Best Buys

Media Partner of the Thailand Property Awards 2015

Dear Reader, Welcome to Issue 8 Volume 3. In a few short years, Hua Hin housing developer Red Mountain has built quite a name for themselves. Their first housing project was called Red Mountain and is located over the hill off of Soi 88. They differentiated themselves from other developers by offering a more modern house style design that really clicked with expat home buyers. For a brand new developer their sales success was impressive to say the least. Their next development was called Red Mountain Boutique Residences and it sold out even faster. They are currently developing Red Mountain Woodlands Residences and their sales are astounding. Read about this exciting new project on page 9. We at HOT Magazine are passionate about improving the lives of Hua Hin’s street dog population. Ninetynine percent of them are wonderful creatures who just want what we all do; love, food & security. On July 18th we hosted our second Black Tie Gala Dinner Fundraiser at Hua Hin’s Hilton Hotel to benefit Rescue Paws, a nonprofit organization that vaccinates, sterilizes and feeds Hua Hin’s homeless street dog population. It was a fun night of food, fashion and music all for a good cause. We take you there on page 36. On July 10th and 11th Electric Mango celebrated their grand opening with two massive parties. Thailand’s Diva Miss Jennifer Kim entertaining guests on Friday evening and madly popular Thai Hip Hop band Titanium drove the crowd wild on Saturday night. On page 42 we take you to Hua Hin’s newest and most unique fun spot. Elephants are highly revered in Thailand, as they should be. The Thailand hotel chain Anantara and their parent company Minor International are admirably huge supporters of Elephant causes. On page 48 we take you to the Anantara’s Golden Triangle Elephant Camp in Chiang Rai where John Roberts, Anantara’s Director of Elephants and Conservation Efforts, tell us about their new program called “Walking with Giants”. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month’s issue. All of us at HOT Hua Hin thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

Red Mountain Woodlands Residences

Woodlands Master Plan ‘Woodlands’ is set in beautiful rolling hills and tropical countryside and consists of 68 land plots with approximately 1/4 of the development dedicated to large scale homes on minimum 1000sqm plots. To date the project is 35% sold since we launched sales only 10 months ago and the project will also feature a large restaurant alongside a beautiful river, property management and maintenance office and a kid’s play area. Location and Surroundings Located only 7 km from central Hua Hin in a stunning, elevated mountainous area with a natural river as well as many large beautiful old trees which are being kept in the land – in which the project takes its name - to maintain the natural environment and beauty of the area. The location boasts close proximity to top golf courses (Banyan, Black Mountain, Royal Thai Golf Course, etc…), the bypass to Bangkok (making the drive from Red Mountain Woodlands Residences to Bangkok well under 3 hours), and all services such as laundry, convenience stores, salons, cafes and so on, are all within an easy 5 minute drive. Project Design All 7 villa types are of a unique modern design with high ceilings, uniform exterior colors and innovative bathrooms and kitchens. The utmost care and consideration has gone into ensuring all car-ports are out of sight from the gardens and terraces, views are unobstructed and each home is secure and private.

We realize most people live mainly outside in our tropical climate, so have maximized all villa designs, project layout and plots to capitalize on the lay of the land for the utmost advantage of an outdoor lifestyle. Coupled with the quality and value for money we offer, we think this is a key aspect of our product that has made our development such a success and appealed to our customers along with our ‘per square meter price’ which is highly competitive in terms of land area and built up area. Our exteriors areas feature natural stones such as marble and granite and we have sourced top quality aluminum windows and sliding door suppliers and heat resistant glass and our kitchens are European quality with top European brand fittings. We also offer and offer custom upgrades on our villas at minimal extra cost. Our use of space focuses on providing homes with the best possible views of the surroundings. Large common areas and a layered elevation differentiate us from the majority of other projects and increases customer comfort and overall desirability. Internally, we have refined our designs to eliminate wasted space and to be functional and flowing – most of our designs focus on access to the terrace and pool from kitchens and bedrooms to match the tropical lifestyle of both indoor and outdoor living. We also offer separate, private, en-suite guesthouses.

problems arise they are responded to swiftly and professionally. Residents are offered a daily return shuttle service to central Hua Hin, reducing the necessity to own a vehicle which is particularly useful to those that are not yet in fulltime residence. Our infrastructure is of the highest possible standard – 3 phase underground electricity and 16MB p/s Internet connection, and we ensure the common areas are large, pristine, useful and well maintained. There is a 24 hour security team as well as CCTV, alongside a constant managerial and maintenance team presence; we feel this provides as safe and secure an environment as possible for our home owners. To add to the sense of nature and space we have opted for generous 8 & 10 meter wide roads finished in black stone, marble curbs and planters on all exterior walls and several communal gardens. Pool and garden maintenance services are provided and maid service, laundry and other services are available upon request. There is optional Internet, satellite TV, pest control and air conditioning maintenance services. In summary we offer well managed, modern and top quality projects providing stylish, upscale pool villas at reasonable prices. L et’s Meet Glen Roberts What is your full name and age? Glen Damian Roberts, aged a young 48. What is your current Job Position? Culinary Director at Hua Hin Intercontinental Resort. How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? I Arrived in May 2015 and have only been here for 3 months. What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? When I lived and worked in Phuket from 2003-2005, I had always heard fantastic things about Hua Hin with its Royal Heritage and history along with the people and of course its miles of white sandy coastline. It has always been on my ‘places to visit’ list. What do you like most about your profession? It has given me the fantastic opportunity to live and work in 8 countries over the past 25 years. I have been very fortunate to be able to experience many different cultures and have many fond memories. During this time I have forged life-long friendships around the world and enjoyed a unique and different life style. What do you like least about your profession? It can take a toll on family life due to the nature of the business, during festive seasons and celebrations which are the peak times in our industry means missing out on those special moments with family and friends. What do you like most about Hua Hin? Hua Hin has a feeling that is unlike other hot spot destinations in Thailand. The charm and historical nature of Hua Hin, the peaceful environment and artistic culture is what makes it unique and special to me. What is your favorite restaurant and why? I am biased, but Azure Restaurant here at the Hua Hin Intercontinental Resort, with its new menu due out in early August featuring local and international seafood plus its position at the beach front and coming soon our new Roof Top Bar venue in late September for me is my favored destination and recommendation. What do you like to do in your free time and why? I am a Golf Junkie and enjoy playing

the guitar. Both of these activities allow me to relax, unwind and enjoy my time away from the restaurants and kitchens. What would you recommend to newcomers to do in Hua Hin and why? Visit the Huay Mongkol Temple for a place of serenity and peace as well to go to Hua Hin Artisit Village where you will find some amazing sculptures and paintings in a unique setting.

Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you? I used to play in a band. We were called the Kitchen Band and we produced 3 music CDs for charity and played weekly in the resorts lounge bar. The band also performed in public venues and for some major cooperate group events.

HOT MAGAZINE RECOMMEND

Andreas Italian Restaurant

H

ua Hin has come to become a natural hub of fine dining. Catering to the demands of its select clientele, the town has developed establishments of impeccable gastronomic excellence across the years. One of the most recent ones to open is Andreas, a top notch restaurant to which the HOT Magazine’s review team had the pleasure of being invited. Opened by Chef Andreas Bonifacio who previously worked at La Grappa, this wonderful place provided us with a memorable evening. The first aspect that was brought to our attention was the attentiveness in

14

August 15 - September 15 , 2015

the service. Duly seated, the waiter placed the serviettes on our laps and immediately asked us for the choice of wine we desired. As we were brought the extensive menu, we settled for a fine Italian red, a Primitivo di Manduria from 2010, whose ruby shades and aromatic pine hints provided the perfect complement to our dishes for the rest of the evening. After some complementary antipasti of fine molten cheese on a tomato base, the first dish Chef Andreas graced us with were the tiger prawns and Hokkaido scallops wrapped in pancetta and served with stewed lentils. A magnificently

pieced dish, with a defining aroma that prolonged itself as we took the first bite. Smokey to the palate, with a great balance between the prawn and the scallops, it was perfectly accompanied by the base of the lentils. The pancetta’s tenderness provided a beautiful texture which made the bites melt in your mouth. Chef Andreas didn’t wait much to provide us with one of the house’s signature dish: the Pizza Chef. Folded in half, filled with Parma ham, black truffle paste, mascarpone and mozzarella cheese, it was a truly special treat with a wonderful flavour. The defining

after-touch of the truffle gave the initial combined taste of the mozzarella and the mascarpone a beautiful accentuation, which in turn highlighted the smoky aroma of the Parma ham. It’s no wonder this is a praised asset at Andreas’s. Next would come the house’s other signature serving, in the form of a wonderful pasta dish. The Spaghetti Alle Aragostine e Pomodori was a delight that included rock lobster in cherry tomato sauce with Italian salad. Characteristically Al Dente in texture, It bore a defining and distinguishing taste from the lobster, which was accentuated towards the end of the bite, something

that complemented the tanginess of the tomato sauce to perfection. We were then served the main course – and what a course it was! It began with the Merluzzo Dell’Alaska Su Asparagi di Mare. An oven baked snow fish fillet served on sautéed asparagus with a reduction of lobster sauce. What struck us from this dish was the tenderness and the fresh quality of the fish, which effortlessly dissolved in the palate, releasing the beautiful, almost sweet aroma that the lobster sauce provided it with. This was wonderfully complemented by the garden-fresh asparagus, which gave it a natural

flavour and a distinctive contrast. Then came a mouth-watering treat, comprising of two Australian paddock lamb chop pieces. Incredibly well prepared in a tender medium rare, it infused the palate in a delicate smoky aroma that permeated the senses. Quality meat is always a well appreciated and Andreas uses nothing but the purest: with a 100% feed of grass, with no hormones and no chemicals. The contrast was evident. To bring everything to a close, Chef Andreas provided us with a spectacular set of desserts, which was music to the ears of our review team’s sweet

tooth. Short of providing a single dish, we were given a delectable array of seven different desserts. The Panna Cotta came first and was a highlight: In a beautiful raspberry sauce and a diced assortment of fruits such as mango, kiwi and raspberry, it was soft, fluffy, well balanced, creamy in the aftertaste, smooth to the touch and aromatic to the palate. The dish came with a confectioned chocolate crown, which provided a contrasting but very complementing taste. The lemon tart was a true delight as well: incredibly fluffy meringue, whose sweetness was the perfect balance to the gentle taste of the crust. Then came the home made sorbet, a wonderfully distinct dessert because of its sensational sweetness and tanginess, which ended on a subtle aftertaste. The tiramisu was for all the coffee lovers, the aroma of which engulfed the first bite. The fresh cream balanced the strike of the cinnamon and provided a rounded and delicious dessert. We were then given a genuine taste of chocolate, with a sensationally well prepared truffle. Deliciously dark, incredibly creamy and resoundingly aromatic, its cracking shell that melted in the mouth combined with the intensity of the chocolate, made for every chocoholic’s dream. We ended in a beautiful apple pie, the moisture and softness of which took us by delightful surprise. The freshness of the apple and the tenderness of the dough was sensational. Our overall experience was that Andreass was a true delight, a restaurant you cannot afford to ignore if you’re a connoisseur and admirer of haute cuisine. La Grappa A menu evolving

THE WHITE IN THE VINEYARD

L

a Grappa, one of Hua Hin’s finest and most favorite restaurants is open once again for business after closing for several weeks to upgrade the premises. Guests won’t notice too much of a difference in the dining room but the building was brought up to grade with new electrical, restroom facilities and a kitchen expansion. Recently HOT Magazine sat down with Chef Eraldo Colazzo to discuss his cooking style and the direction he’s taking LaGrappa’s menu HOT Magazine: Chef Eraldo, can you tell us a little about your cooking style? Chef Eraldo: During the early 80’s chef Michel Richard in France and chef Gualtiero Marchesi in Italy put the revolutionary grounds of the nouvelle cuisine which pretty soon will change the cuisines of all kinds all over the world. I was at that time still in Italy and lucky enough (and skilled too I should say in modesty) to get a job as chef de partie (line cook) at chef Marchesi’s restaurant Erbusco. I wasn’t there for a COD IN HELL

long time but it was long enough for me to understand the clues of this new style. I started to develop my own with much attention to the ingredients’ color choice and pairing in the dishes ( colors have flavors to me), their shapes and final geometry and an extremely committed search to use to very best top quality ingredients available, always. I can’t work properly with average stuff no matter it tastes good too. HOT Magazine: You’ve been at La Grappa since September of last year. Is the menu settled or is it still evolving? Chef Eraldo: It is evolving, spread slowly in the coming weeks and months. A few of our new dishes which represent in full the concepts of the beginning of the nouvelle cuisine are featured below.

the ingredients are not mixed together and visible separately to recall the deconstructed style of nouvelle cuisine. -COD IN HELL is a masterpiece of chef Marchesi which shocked the culinary world at that time with this extra strong presentation using, mainly the two strongest colors in nature: the red and the black. The red sauce is a kind of gazpacho and the black is a fish bouillon with squid ink and lime. -THE WHITE IN THE VINEYARD is a dish of mine, white chocolate soufflé on almond sauce with grapes fillets marinated in Sambuca liqueur and Tahitian vanilla. HOT Magazine: Thank you Chef Eraldo for your time.

- SEA BIG BANG is a seafood salad where the seafood is quickly blanched in water, dry Martini, cloves and salt and laid separately on a bed of sauce made with mayonnaise and lobster reduction and dressed with drops of basil pesto, chili tomato sauce, squid ink, extra virgin olive oil, ground white pepper, all

Joachim and Matt have announced the grand opening for their brand new furniture shop “Urban Living Furniture” on Phetkasem Road, Soi 38. It is conveniently located right next to the shopping village named Plearn Wan, a popular Hua Hin sightseeing attraction for visitor and locals alike. You may recall that Joachim and Matt were planning on buying Homeless Furniture but in the end saw the deal fall through at the last minute. Notwithstanding this failure, Joachim and Matt didn’t give up their plans of running their own furniture shop in Hua Hin and after a long search for an ideal location and countless hours of planning to set up their business concept, they have now reached their goal and will soon be welcoming retail and wholesale customers to visit their shop. A multi-functional company website is currently under construction

and shall go live in the course of this next month. But what will Urban Living Furniture actually stand for? Let’s start with its slogan “Anything but Ordinary”. It refers to a furniture range comprising of trendy, modern to contemporary home and outdoor furniture with an “urban” lifestyle appeal. In terms of quality, the owners pride themselves on having contracted suppliers that focus on quality rather than quantity, allowing them to pay attention to details and monitor tight quality control protocols. And last but not least, the design: the business partners researched the local furniture offers carefully and identified a niche for furniture styles that are best labeled as ‘Scandinavian’. It stands for innovative, minimalistic, stylish and solid elegance that will give a home a distinct and tasteful ambience of

modern urbanity. Joachim and Matt have also high ambitions to establish their business as an integrated furniture solution provider. To distinguish themselves from a common business practice of some of its competitors, who are just buying furniture and hoping for a sale when a customer walks in or calls, Joachim and Matt have developed a distinct marketing strategy primarily for residential property developers. However it also caters to restaurants, bars and boutique hotel owners that is based on “value building blocks” from conception to installation of an interior design for a particular project. The feedback from pre-marketing meetings with property developers was quite positive and encouraging. Unless a customer has already made a purchasing decision, retail customers shall be assisted in making the best choices for their homes, whether it is a condo or a house. Matt is prepared to help selecting the furniture style, fabric or color that blends into your home and meets your individual preferences. To achieve that Matt is also prepared to visit your home and to provide ideas for creating a new home ambience. We are confident that with a fresh, modern and stylish selection of furniture Joachim and Matt will succeed in their plans to establish a furniture business that is truly “Anything but Ordinary”!

Personal profiles: Joachim is a German national and has a long career as an international corporate finance banker. Joachim said that he feels blessed as he spent a great part of his career and life outside of Germany in metropolitan cities like London, Amsterdam, New York, Sydney and Hong Kong. These job assignments provided him with the opportunity to learn about different cultures, lifestyles and trends that he now can capitalize on when serving the international community of Hua Hin. Joachim also said that with each move to a new home he had to newly assort his furniture which is probably the reason why he developed a strong personal interest in furniture arrangements. Matt on the other hand is a Thai national and started off as a banker. After a few years in the job he however decided to quit his job to go to Sydney to improve his English skills and to study marketing and tourism. As fate willed, it was in Sydney where Matt and Joachim met and became friends. And when Matt told Joachim of his dream to exploit in interior design Joachim encouraged Matt to join him on his next assignment to Hong Kong where he joined renowned Raffles Design Institute of Singapore to complete a 2 1/2-year study in interior design. And so it happened and Matt was awarded the Advanced Diploma by the RCHE of Singapore. He then started an internship with Hansar Hotel in Bangkok where he was part of the internal design team and participated in several renovation projects.

MULTI CULTY On the 29th of July and after a two month break, Hua Hin’s own Diva Khun Lizzy along with her good friend Paul Grab organized a special night of Multi Culti to celebrate the upcoming Swiss National Day. With an exceptional turnout, old and new friends alike were happy to greet each other during the welcoming drinks at the Royal Dusit Hall outside the Dusit’s Grand Ballroom. Everyone was enjoying the social hour so much that it ran a little over schedule, but once the doors to the Royal Hall were opened the Dusit’s Executive Chef Horst Kocsisek 34

August 15 - September 15 , 2015

and his large team were all there to greet everyone as they entered the beautifully decorated ballroom to find their seats. Special guests for the evening included longtime Hua Hin Resident Mrs. Connie Heinecke, The Deputy Mayor of Hua Hin Khun Montri Choophoo and the Inspector of Hua Hin’s Tourist Police Major Phunlan Pathompornwiwat. Brian Anderson as usual did a spectacular job as M.C. and kept the pace of the evening moving along efficiently. Perhaps it was the two month break between events or the deliciousness of

Chef Horst’s and his teams buffet or a combination thereof, but everyone seemed to be having an extra special good time this night. Those attending dug deep in their pockets to buy raffle tickets knowing that the money raised would go to support Lizzy’s many charitable projects with the Hua Hin’s Children’s Home at the top of her list. As always, tremendous thanks go out to the many hotels and restaurants who donated vouchers that were used as raffle prizes. As Lizzy likes to say, together, as a community, we are strong!

O

n Saturday evening July 18th HOT Magazine and HOT Hua Hin Property hosted the C.D.L. Gala Night and Beach Fashion Show, a benefit evening to raise money for Rescue Paws. Rescue Paws is a local non-profit organization that vaccinates, sterilizes, feeds and works to find loving homes for Hua Hin’s homeless and helpless street dog population.

August 15 - September 15 , 2015

The sell-out Black Tie event was held at the Hua Hin Hilton Hotel Ballroom where over 180 guests enjoyed the Hilton’s fine buffet dinner, free flow wine and beer, a fantastic beach fashion show, live music and a raffle where great prizes were won. As the fashion show began, a bevy of beautiful Bangkok models paraded

down the catwalk wearing the latest beach fashions from Phatrawi Boutique. The surprise of the evening came when the kids took to the catwalk courtesy of Bangkok’s Child’s Time Magazine. These future fashion supermodels owned the catwalk as the modeled fashions to the delight of the crowd. Susan and Larry provided the live

music for the evening and got people out of their seats and dancing. For those who weren’t ready to call it a night, an after party was held at the Saxophone Lounge on Soi 94 where part of the night’s proceeds also went to help Rescue Paws. Part of the money raised from the evening went to purchase an

Autoclave for sterilizing instruments and a professional grade microscope. According to Jaco Kleinloog, Managing Director of Rescue Paws, “Rescue Paws and our furry friends are forever grateful for all the support of the community on this evening and in the future. We simply cannot do the work we do and have the successes without the help of Hot Magazine, and all of our friends. It was

a great evening and we hope to see all of you and your friends at our next event in November. “ HOT Magazine would like to give special thanks to the wonderful companies who donated items for the evening’s raffle as well as cash donations to help Hua Hin’s homeless and helpless street dog population.

Electric Mango Grandest of Grand Openings

August 15 - September 15 , 2015

HUA HIN Garden Lounge & Resort

E

lectric Mango, Hua Hin’s newest entertainment venue had the grandest of grand openings on July 10th and 11th. Friday the 10th was a more relaxed evening with Thailand’s favorite Diva Jennifer Kim as the headliner for the evening. An immensely popular Thai singer she has garnered even more popularity as a judge on Thailand’s TV show “The Voice”. Jennifer wowed the crowd with her well known Thai favorites as well as international standards. The night saw acrobatics, dancers, dj’s and a fantastic fireworks display as well. Saturday night was a totally different experience and crowd with Thailand’s hugely popular Hip Hop band Titanium taking the stage. They rocked the crowd and the crowd rocked them back. Everyone was having fun listening, dancing and even swimming in Electric Mango’s humongous pool that surrounds the stage. Electric Mango is located off of soi 112 and has been open for a year or so, originally starting as a tropical cocktail lounge with pool tables and a play area for children. Lars Castenlund is the owner and visionary who has taken EM from its cocktail lounge roots and has added a really fantastic steak house, a whiskey and cigar bar, a bungalow hotel, an 800 square meter swimming pool with swim up bar and performance stage in the center, private rentable pool bungalows and a greatly expanded kids play area. If you haven’t been before, go. The food is fantastic and the overall project extremely impressive. There is nothing like it in Hua Hin and I predict very soon it will become extremely popular with the Bangkok weekend crowd. Walking with Giants in Chang Rai

T

hailand’s current population of domesticated elephants is about 2,700. After a precipitous decline from about 100,000 domesticated elephants in 1850, numbers are now stable. About 95% of Thai elephants are in private ownership, with the Thai Elephant Conservation Center’s 80 elephants being Thailand’s only government-owned elephants apart from a few in zoos and the King’s ten revered ‘white’ elephants in the Royal Elephant Stable. In 1989 the Thai government banned all logging in protected areas, effectively closing all remaining natural forests. While undoubtedly a very wise choice, one unfortunate side effect was that it threw many logging elephants out of work. Luckily, that loss coincided with a rapid rise in tourism, which was able to employ many elephants. Today, probably more than half of Thai elephants work in tourism.

Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort is renowned for its highly acclaimed onsite Elephant Camp, which offers guests an inspirational range of fun, interactive and educational experiences with its friendly herd of rescued gentle giants. In a natural extension of these ethical elephant activities, a new two hour Walking with Giants experience has been introduced offering a more personal and enriching encounter. Walking with Giants has been devised as an optimum way of getting to know the elephants better and develop a deeper emotional connection. Much more than simply a walk, it enables guests to experience the natural joy of the elephants’ daily free roaming time, and also to gain enlightening insights from scientifically qualified experts about how these intelligent creatures think and behave. Guests who sign up for Walking with

Giants join the elephants on their daily stroll, accompanied by their mahout caregivers and either the Camp’s resident vet or biologist. After walking from the Elephant Camp out to the grasslands or forest, depending on the season, the antics of either river bath time or playtime in the mud illustrates just how cheeky these graceful animals can be. Guests can help to prepare snacks for the elephants, as well as activities for their behavioural enrichment. Meandering back to the camp, the scientific expert explains about elephant biology and behaviour, and also reveals fascinating facts and insights about the past, present and hopeful future for all of Thailand’s elephants. John Roberts, Anantara’s Director of Elephants and Conservation Efforts, enthuses, “One of the most inspiring and heartwarming aspects of the camp is when we can give the elephants freedom to roam in their native jungle habitat, and creating this new activity provides

guests with a prime opportunity to experience the pure joy of simply being with elephants as they socialize and behave completely naturally. It is also a fantastic experience for enthusiasts who are interested in learning about these majestic mammals from a scientific perspective.” Under the guidance and expertise of John Roberts, guests can rest assured that all activities are ethical at the award winning Elephant Camp of Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort. Set up in 2003 as a traditional mahout village, the Elephant Camp works alongside Anantara’s Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation. To date over 40 elephants have been rescued from Thailand’s city streets, of which 20 now live in the jungle environment of Anantara’s Elephant Camp, along with their entire mahout family, who receive English lessons, education for their children, and 100% of the profits from the sale of garments from a traditional

silk worm business. The Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation also cooperates with the Thai government and other organisations in bigger picture projects. It has helped to fund research and clinics using elephants in therapy sessions for children living with autism. It equipped the first elephant hospital in Krabi, southern Thailand, with an ATV, and has also donated to the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre in Lampang, among other things, a purpose built elephant ambulance and a gantry to help lame elephants stand. The foundation also built the world’s only facility to scientifically research elephant intelligence and behaviour and runs the world’s only programme to teach scientific Positive Reinforcement training methods to traditional mahouts. Along with its parent company, Minor International, the foundation is working with international partners

and the Cambodian Government to fund the protection of an 18,000 hectare elephant corridor of standing forest in the Cardamom Mountains and funding wild elephant preservation projects in Kui Buri, Thap Lan & Khao Yai National Parks in Thailand. Walking with Giants, along with the Mahout Experience and Elephant Learning Experience, is offered as part of the resort’s luxurious all-inclusive Discovery Package, while a range of additional elephant activities (Elephant Yoga, Sunset Elephant Trek, Dining by Design at the Baby Elephant Camp and Elephant Picnic) are available at an extra charge. For more information about Walking with Giants and the other ethical elephant experiences available at Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort, visit www.anantara. com.

Ang Thong

A

t times, one wishes not to travel too far from the centre in order to explore the beauty of the countryside. Thailand is one of the many countries in which that is possible. It is thus for that reason that this month’s HOT Getaway does not take us too far away from the country’s capital, Bangkok. The HOT Magazine team looked into a place that was easy to reach and thus selected the wonderful province of Ang Thong in central Thailand. Located a mere one hundred and five kilometres away from Suvarnabhumi Airport, it is a perfect location to spend a few days and to learn its rich history and culture. 56

August 15 - September 15 , 2015

Located by the calm Noi River and the famous Chao Phraya River, the province of Ang Thong was previously known as Mueang Wiset Chai Chan. The province played a key role during the eighteenth century at the glory of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. As a frontier outpost, this territory was mainly used to control the advances of the Burmese army during the latter’s Konbaung Dynasty, against which the former Kingdom of Siam had several confrontations. In all its might, Ang Thong was the last province to fall in the hands of the Burmese during the second Burmese-Siamese War between 1765 and 1767. It is situated right next to Sing Buri,

where the famous resistance battle of the village of Bang Rachan took place, an event dear to Thai traditional culture as a demonstration of heroic determination. Dearest still, is the fact that Ang Thong was the hometown of the valiant officers Nai Dok and Nai Thongkaeo, who led the aforementioned repel of the Burmese. Ang Thong is geographically a small province compared to those in the rest of the country and mostly consists of very rich agricultural land. It is one of Thailand’s largest rice producers and is known for the quality of it. In fact, the name Ang Thong etymologically means

“Golden Bowl”, which gives us an insight into the importance that this province has in an agricultural sense and attests for the quality of the golden coloured rice that it produces. It is also thought to derive from the concave shape of the basin in which it lies. The province is most famously known for the quantity of beautiful architectural structures and monuments that populate it. It has over two hundred magnificent and interesting temples and in the following paragraphs we provide you with the description of a few of those, and show you why a trip to Ang Thong is a

way to enrich your cultural and historical knowledge of Thailand. The first attraction we look at is Wat Phinittammasan, which is very popular because of its old Viharns, as they were constructed towards the latter end of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Equally impressive is the large plaster-made seated Buddha image in a posture which sees him undertaking a subduing Mara. It measures twelve metres in width and is thus an impressive sight to anyone’s eyes. We then go into Wat Muang, which boast the big Buddha. This structure is

very famous because it is the ninth biggest statue in the entire world. Painted in gold, it is made entirely out of cement and stands at an impressive ninety two metres of height. It was constructed over a period of eighteen years, as it began in 1990 and was not completed until seven years ago in 2008. The next attraction is Wat Saket. Located in the Chayaphum by the Chao Phraya River it is a temple that dates back to the Kingdom of Ayutthaya. Previously named Ban Sa it is mentioned in the royal chronicles that when Phrachao Chiangmai led the army to camp in Ban Saket, King

57

Naresuan the Great and Somdet Phra Ekathotsarot led an incursion to defeat Chaingmai. His Majesty the King Bhumibol attended this temple in 1970 to honour king Naresuan the Great. Wat Inthapramun, located in the district of the same name, is also a renowned site that is very famous because of the reclining Buddha that it bears within its enclosure. This statue is the second largest in the whole of Thailand and is painted in a weathered white colour. This temple was constructed during the Sukhothai period. From Inthrapramun we venture to Wat Thanun, which is a construct of the 18th century. This site is known for the standing wooden Buddha inside that

58

August 15 - September 15 , 2015

measures a commanding two metres in height. The curious activity that is carried out in this location is the paying of homage with the standing of eggs in front of the statue. Those who achieve such feat are said to be granted good fortune and thus many commute to this location in order to have a go. But if we have to give a highlight that displays the essence of Ang Thong, it’s the Drum Making Village. The name of this village is Ekkarat and is very well known for the artisans that hand-make drums. This has been the case for many years and a tradition that has been kept throughout and up to this current date. The quality of these are optimum and the recent Four Star OTOP Award is a proof of this. Drum beats are an essential

and primordial part of Thai culture and being able to make them is seen as a prestigious honour. Teachers of drum making are very highly regarded and are held at the elite of Thai society. For this reason, a ceremony is held every year to honour the careers of past drum making masters. Ekkarat is truly a wonderful place to visit for those interested in the traditional Thai drum making industry. Last but not least in the sites that describe this region is Sang Kra Thai. This attraction is one of the most special of them all, as it combines nature with the architectural brilliance of the eighteenth century. The ruins of this beautiful Wat were the perfect blooming location of a number of large trees that grew engulfing the enclosure. Today

it looks like a magnificently coalesced relationship that Mother Nature established with this sacred location. Intertwined around the walls, creeping up the edges, the vines and roots climb and cover most of the structure. As spring comes, the leaves flourish wonderfully, making it look like the bricks and cement always belonged there. Ang Thong boast from a number of festivals that that occur annually. One of the more popular ones is Ngan Mueang U – Khao, U Nam and the Annual Red Cross Fair, which is held late December and at the beginning of January. Cultural shows, exhibitions, local handicraft sales and beauty contests are common, in what is a very pleasant show.

Another festival is the Long Boat Race Festival, which occurs in Wat Pa Mok and is scheduled in two distinct periods: A prints celebration which is held in March and the traditional race which dates onwards to October. Lots of fun, thrills and excitement accompany this wonderful event. The final and most interesting festival is the Dragon Parade Procession, which is held in December of every year. This invites god Kuan-U to the Ang Thong Market and attracts many curious onlookers because of the extravagant parade.

As a whole, Ang Thong is a small province of incredibly rich and diverse history ranging all the way back to the Kingdom of Ayutthaya. Be it to visit its many beautiful temples or to indulge in its traditional drum making ceremonies, Ang Thong is a province you cannot afford to ignore in your travel itinerary.

ecently we had the pleasure of staying at the AETAS Hotel in Bangkok, ideally located in the centre of Bangkok’s shopping, business and diplomatic districts. AETAS is a family owned company that has two hotels, AETAS Bangkok and AETAS Lumpini as well as the AETAS Residence, which are their serviced apartments for longer stays. AETAS Bangkok and AETAS Residence are across the street from one another on Soi Ruamrudee and very near the Conrad Hotel. The hotel offers five different room types; their superior rooms are 35 sqm’s and offer modern amenities such as IP phones, IPTV along with ironing boards with irons. Deluxe rooms are a little larger at 46 sqm’s and offer panoramic views of the city a long with extras such as a large high-def LCD TV and a well-furnished mini bar. We stayed in one of their Executive Suites and found them spacious at 68 sqm’s. The lounge had tastefully designed furniture, a large and comfortable work station, (with plenty of plugs for all of our devices), a comfortable sofa and armchairs plus a large LCD TV. The separate bedroom comes with another LCD TV, several roomy closets and a handy dresser. The bathroom is quite large and features a separate rain shower with adjustable jets, and a stand-alone bathtub. There was also an additional half bath which was located by the entry hall off of the lounge. The Hotel’s Governor Suite is larger still at 118 sqm’s and is outfitted more like a serviced apartment with a kitchen that features a refrigerator, microwave and sink. Views are great in these suites with panoramic views of Bangkok from both the bedroom and bathroom. When you’re truly in the mood to pamper yourself then the 200 sqm Presidential Suite awaits. The suite is split on two floors and includes a very spacious living room and dining room with a beautiful glass dining table accommodating up to ten people. The high windows with remote-controlled curtains offer panoramic views of Bangkok and direct access to the private terrace and outdoor Jacuzzi. Next to the dining room is a very convenient and fully-equipped kitchen should you wish to have your meals prepared within your suite. An electric double glass door leads into the large bedroom with its adjoining living room and a second Jacuzzi with adjustable jets is available in the spacious bathroom. When staying at AETAS I highly recommend you upgrade to Club AETAS. Club privileges always get you complimentary evening cocktails but here you also receive complimentary afternoon tea from 2:00 pm. – 3:30 pm, complimentary

In addition to their innovative cocktails they also offer a fine selection of international wines and ales, and an appetizing array of soft drinks, fresh fruit juices plus their signature coffee drinks. Trader Vic’s Sunday Brunch

ore than chipper, more than happy, more than delighted is ebullient and ebullient best described Vic Bergeron. In the year 1934, Vic, whose nickname was “The Trader,” took 300 dollars of his own money and borrowed 500 from his aunt to build a cozy little saloon on San Pablo Avenue in Oakland California and named it “Hinky Dinks” After embarking on an adventure to Cuba to refine his skills as a bartender and explore the subtleties of rums from around the world, Vic eventually landed in Hawaii and completely immersed himself in island living and culture. Upon his return home his objective was clear: inject the spirit of the Hawaiian Islands into our everyday lives.

70

August 15 - September 15 , 2015

In 1937, The Trader transformed Hinky Dinks into a tiki-bedecked tropical retreat aptly named Trader Vic’s and put into practice his research on rums. One day in 1944, a bit of serendipity happened that would place The Trader at the forefront of rum-soaked cocktail mixology earning him a place in history. He pulled down a bottle of 17-year-old Jamaican Rum from the bar, added a squeeze of lime, a dash of rock candy syrup, a splash of orange curacao, some French orgeat, and poured the concoction over cracked ice. He handed it to a friend who immediately exclaimed, “It’s Mai Tai Roa Ae!” (Tahitian for “Out of this world - the best!”), and the first Mai Tai was born - Paradise In A Glass™. As popularity of Vic’s Tiki haven grew,

Trader Vic’s successfully opened its first franchise in Seattle Washington in 1940, expanded internationally in 1963 starting at London’s Hilton Hotel on Park Lane and found booming success in the Middle East starting in 1994 Here in Bangkok The Trader’s ebullient spirit lives on at the Anantara Riverside Resort where Trader Vic’s first set down its Tiki roots in 1992. In researching the Trader I couldn’t find whether he was a big fan of the Sunday Brunch but if he was then the Sunday Brunch here would certainly have made him proud. When first entering Trader Vic’s you are introduced to the “Mai Tai Fountain” which begins your endless journey of Mai Tai cocktails throughout your

leisurely meal. One of the first stations you’ll come across after the Mai Tai fountain is their “Seafood on Ice”. Here you can enjoy Alaska King Crab, Tiger Prawns, Boston Lobster and Manila Clams along with many more of the ocean’s delicacy’s. Other stations include their BBQ with offerings such as Lamb, Beef Tenderloins, Salmon, Scallops and on and on. Even in the corner’s you’ll find unique food stations. At the Indian Corner you can have Fish Tikka, Chicken Tikka and Dall Curry. At the Chinese Corner you’ll find Peking Duck, BBQ pork with rice cake, BBQ pork bun, Shrimp Bun, Ha Kao and fish dumpling’s.

Their Hot Carving station is where you go for Roasted Prime Rib along with Trader Vic’s signature Pork Spare Ribs.

known for their sweets as they supply all of the Starbucks in town and here they don’t let you down.

Their Japanese section is well represented starting with Tempan from the famous Benihana’s (which also has a restaurant at the Anantara Riverside), a Tempura Station, local and imported Sashimi, Caviar, fresh Tuna Tartar and an Oyster Bar.

The Trader Vic’s Sunday Brunch is one of the very best brunch’s in town with free flow Mai Tai’s or beer, wine and sparkling, all while enjoying the sounds of The Trader’s house band. You’ll leave feeling more than happy, more than chipper, more than delighted, you’ll feel ebullient!

Italian is not forgotten with the Anantara’s well-known Italian restaurant Brio providing homemade pastas and succulent sauces. I was clued in by the waiter when seated to “save room for desert” and I was glad I did. The Anantara is well

Yodpiman River Walk

M

odern cities like Bangkok are amusing, recreational and exciting. But in addition, Bangkok equally offers you the inevitable chance to learn about its history and tradition as well as its vast influence in the architectonic scenario. Here is where conundrums and contradictions often take place. The dilemma of the average tourist is how to schedule their time in order to be able to explore all the appealing sights, including the urban areas, the shopping centres, the beaches and the malls, without missing the cultural heritage, such as museums, traditional arts, and the variety of hand made products and the typical countryside crafts at the same time. Not to forget the relaxation produced by the magnificence and the purity of its ancient temples and the uniqueness of its antique architecture.

72

August 15 - September 15 , 2015

This is why recently, the Yodpiman River Walk at the Bangkok Flower Market came up with a solution to satisfy the interests of all kind of individuals with different preferences and options without having to travel countless and unbearable hours through Bangkok or suffering from its notoriously hectic business hour city traffic. Opened in late 2014, it offers restaurants of all refined, regional and modern cuisine. There are also an array of snack stalls, food from different countries, and a large beer garden with live night time

entertainment. The River Walk is located in the same area where most important temples and major attractions are situated. These attractions include places such as the Grand Palace, the reclining Buddha of Wat Pho and the Museum of Siam. It is equally also directly behind the famous Bangkok Flower Market (Talad Pak Klong) in Old City Bangkok. All of the above mentioned qualities demonstrate that Yodpiman River Walk is the perfect place to coalesce

sightseeing with architecture, Thai history and mall life without having to go too far in order to acquire them all. From the open-aired, second floor the view is breath taking. The most famous Thai temples are located on the opposite side of the river – in particular, the stunning rounded stupas of Wat Arun, which are lit up marvellously as dusk settles across the Bangkok city skyline. Given that Yodpiman mall was opened by the shores of the Chao Phraya River, visitors can enjoy the unique landscape,

comprising of the boats and ferries crossing the waters. Whoever has the pleasure to lounge there, will have the opportunity of feeling a cooling breeze, in a calm and interesting venue. A venue that for the first time in Thailand has had the idea of merging a shopping mall with the history of the old city (as it was renovated from a dilapidated river

market) constructed according to the ancient styled parameters. This can be seen in its dimensions, which following tradition are long and narrow, something that was inspired by the architecture of Thailand’s Ayutthaya period. The ornaments, the furniture and the whole structure portrays the
