Media Partner of the Thailand Property Awards 2016

Dear Reader Welcome to Volume 4 issue 1, a year we hope brings you much laughter and remembrance of many smiles. We start our first issue of the year by taking you to LaBua Resort & Residence, a housing development that saw unbelievable success in 2015 which we’re sure will continue. A Thai/Danish partnership, it’s residences are eye catching and their build quality commendable. Next we take you to this year’s Miss Hua Hin 2015 Gala night hosted by HOT Magazine and Rescue Paws, a Hua Hin based street dog charity. This is our second annual Miss Thailand charity event and it was once again held at the Amari Hua Hin Resort. Check out who was there and who took home the big crown on page 32. Have you heard, as in Elephant Herd? Elephant Parade has hit Bangkok in a big way and HOT Magazine was there to cover it. Elephant Parade is an exhibition that has traveled to major cities around the world and who’s famous supporters include Sir Richard Branson, The Duchess of York, Evelyn De Rothschild and many more. The charity’s roots are here in Thailand and the money raised is doing wonderful things for Thailand’s national symbol, page 42. As I’ve said many times before, one of the great things about living in Hua Hin is the number of fun events that happen throughout the year. One of our personal favorites is the World Tennis Thailand Championship which allows Hua Hin’ians to see up close some of the best tennis players in the World. This year Venus Williams along with 3 other top ranked women’s tennis players entertained the crowd with their skill and athleticism at the new True Arena Hua Hin. We tag along with the players starting on page 48. O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo? The classic line from Shakespeare’s iconic play Romeo and Juliet. William Shakespeare set 13 of his classic plays in the Italian city of Verona. This month our “Let’s Go” feature takes us to Verona, The Verona at Tub Lan that is where just two hours out of Bangkok you can visit a replica of the immortal city, page 60. We end this issue by introducing you to new Hua Hin resident John Chambers. John has done many things in his lifetime but if you ask him he’ll tell you that he is an “Activist for Humanity.” John has written a book, available thru Amazon, called “Misconceptions and Course Corrections, A Collection of Critical Essays for our Times.” On page 66 we excerpt a few of his essays that deal with being kind, happiness & gratitude, all important concepts as we head into a new year. As always, thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read. I’ll sign off by repeating one of John’s mantra’s, which is quickly becoming mine, “It’s cool to be kind.”

La Bua Resort & Residence

L

a Bua Resort & Residence is Hua Hin’s newest star in the Property sky being one of the biggest success stories this Royal resort city saw in 2015, and the success does not look like it is going to stop!

The developers of La Bua are a group of Danish and Thai nationals who totally changed the way most housing developments are made. Denmark is under the Scandinavian umbrella of countries which are world famous for their architectural design as well as furniture and clothing. By mixing Danish design with the recognized high level of service and hospitality Thailand is known for, La Bua offers a special treat by combining all those elements into each property type and the whole La Bua concept! La Bua wanted to stand out and be different, and they have achieved that. But, at the same time they trend with the direction Hua Hin as a city is heading. La Bua has been created to be a lifestyle estate, where resident’s´ different needs for privacy, socializing, sports activities, relaxation have all been factored in. They also offer a full range of property services to cover rental programs and maintenance. La Bua is in a very attractive location and offers spectacular undisturbed 360-degree mountain views as one of the only ongoing developments offer. Just 10 min away from beaches and Hua Hin´s busy city center, La Bua completely blends into its tranquil and undisturbed surroundings. Here, it is possible to sit on your rooftop patio with a cup of coffee and see the sun rise and set again behind the mountaintops bordering Myanmar with a glass of chilled white wine. La Bua´s nearest neighbor is the world famous Banyan golf course, but it is also close to the newly opened tennis and sports complex True Arena Hua Hin as well as the

1 billion baht Vana Nava water park and the currently under construction Blue Port shopping mall. All of these destinations are within a 10-minute drive or less which makes La Bua’s locale a superb one. One of the features that makes La Bua stand out from its competitors is its huge tropical landscaped grounds covering more than 15,000 sqm’s and which takes up most of the resort area located in the center of the La Bua estate. In the center residents can find the reception area along with their 200m long beach lagoon pool, a tennis court, fitness room, shuttle bus service, 24-hour reception and a restaurant. The lagoon pool is a feature with both a children’s pool, spa, lap pool, swimup pool bar and pool side restaurant making it the natural center piece of La Bua. Owner’s at La Bua will enjoy the same level of services and facilities as in many luxury resorts. Providing world class services and facilities is however not enough to be different in today’s property market, so La Bua offers a wide range of properties suitable for every budget and need. 14 different property types are available and range from 1 & 2-bedroom apartment/condos with a starting price of 2,745.000 THB for 71 sqm’s to Pool Villa’s in 2 to 4 bedroom configurations starting from just 5.495.000 THB for 186 sqm’s. Every property comes fully furnished with exciting and refreshing furniture styles that can be chosen from their on-line catalog, how easy is that! All properties have large private swimming pools, Jacuzzis or direct access to the huge resort lagoon pool. The design´s is really where La Bua stands out! Functionality is one of the cornerstones in Danish design and here La Bua really shows its heritage. During the design phase of the project, every one of the 14 property types had well-defined criteria that

had to be met before the La Bua group were satisfied. All the residence’s had to be designed with Thailand’s tropical climate in mind. It wasn’t enough that they looked good with their modern appearance, they also had to be practical in terms of actually living in them. Another criteria was that they all had to be open and spacious, allowing as much light and air to circulate as possible and one of the most important criteria’s was they had to be prepared for the future. Low maintenance and running costs were key as well as durability. La Bua homes are constructed with quality, cutting edge components. They use low energy materials such as LED lighting, DC inverter airconditioning and ceiling fans, Danish produced kitchens, wardrobes & efficient water pumps, German produced water pipes and fittings and an Australian developed swimming pool surface in all their properties. In other words, La Bua uses the best materials and building solutions from around the world to set a new standard for the Hua Hin property market. The unique and distinctive modern designs, the luxurious resort concept and the extremely competitive prices have proven to be La Bua’s secret to success! Baan Thalia – Anantara Hua Hin Resort

T

he 5 star Anantara Resort Hotel Chain was conceived and built by legendary businessman Bill Heinecke. The very first Anantara opened in 2001 and now 40 of his luxurious resorts can be found in countries as diverse as Mozambique, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Zambia and 7 other exotic countries. It is at the very first Anantara, here in Hua Hin, where we had the pleasure of dining at their signature restaurant Baan Thalia. The restaurant, as well as most of the hotel and gardens were designed by the famous Bangkok based architect Bill Bensley. The restaurant is cozy and has the feel of exclusivity. This was our second visit back to Baan Thalia, the first being in early 2014. We wanted to dine once again, one because it was so delicious the first time, and two because we wanted to try some of the dishes inspired by the well-known Chef Eraldo Colazzo from Italy. Chef Eraldo has a diploma from the Cordon Bleu Culinary Academy in Florence and has worked at many Michelin star rated restaurants around the globe. He worked and learned under Chef Gualtiero Marchesi, considered the father of modern Italian cuisine. Chef Eraldo was recently a guest chef at Baan Thalia and a few of his signature dishes are celebrated on their menu. A dining pleasure lost over time was the appearance of a bread basket while waiting for your meal to arrive. Thankfully Baan Thalia is one of the very few restaurants I know of that continues the tradition and here they serve assorted warm breads with wonderful condiments. Our starter was a Cesar salad which is a favorite of mine and was delightful. The romaine lettuce was crunchy with a bit of bitter flavor. The dressing had a bite of garlic, and the aroma and flavor of anchovy. Thin sliced toasted garlic bread and a slice of parmigiana topped the dish which was wonderfully garnished.

We then started with a few of Chef Eraldo’s creations, the first being the “Sea Big Bang” with prawns, clams, squid and scallops. In an earlier conversation Chef Eraldo told me how he makes this dish. He said he quickly blanches the seafood in water, dry martini, cloves and a touch of salt. He then lays each piece separately on a bed of sauce made with mayonnaise and lobster reduction. He then dresses the dish with drops of basil pesto, chili tomato sauce, squid ink, extra virgin olive oil and ground white pepper. He said it was important that the ingredients not be mixed together but be visibly separated to recall the deconstructed style of nouvelle cuisine. The flavors were plentiful and the presentation visually memorable. Next came “Spaghetti Sofia Loren”. Chef Eraldo tells the story of how he was working in a restaurant in America when a waiter hurriedly came up to him and said “Chef, there is a guest who wants to speak with you”. Upon greeting the table, he instantly recognized the internationally famous Italian beauty Sophia Loren. Sophia told him that she would like some pasta but everything on the menu looked to heavy, she asked if she could have something light. He went back to the Kitchen and created his “Spaghetti Sofia Loren”. She raved about it and it has been one of his signature dishes ever since. The dish combines Spaghetti Prawns, Cherry Tomatoes Rocket leaves and Buffalo Mozzarella. His secret ingredient, not listed on the menu is Gin. This was the second time I’ve had this dish and it was as good as I remembered. Next to arrive was Chef Eraldo’s Polo “Saltimbocca”, a chicken fillet, sautéed with Sage and Ham in a Marsalla wine sauce. The word “Saltimbocca” is Italian and means “jumps in mouth”. It is very popular in Switzerland, Italy, Spain and Greece however it’s usually made with veal but chicken works just as well. The ham makes the chicken meat pleasantly salty and the sauce, created by the combination of wine, flour and butter, keeps the meat succulent and moist. The real star of this dish though is the sage: a small leaf placed on each slice of meat creates a unique and unmistakable flavor! The final dish of the evening was a Wagyu beef tenderloin. Wagyu beef comes from several breeds of cattle that are known for their genetic predisposition to intense marbling thus giving the beef more flavor. This was the case for the perfectly done piece of meat that was lightly seasoned and garnished. The Anantara’s Executive Chef Hans Peter Held once again prepared a sensational meal preparing several of his own dishes along with several of Chef Eraldo’s. If you haven’t been, or haven’t been lately, be sure to book a table at Baan Thalia soon. Baan Thalia @ Anantara Hua Hin Resort & Spa\ 43/1 Phetkasem Beach Road Tel: 032 520 250

O

n the 12th of December HOT Magazine in association with the animal charity Rescue Paws hosted a Gala Charity Dinner at the Amari Hua Hin Seaside Resort. The purpose of the evening was two-fold. The first was to raise money to improve the plight of Hua Hin’s homeless and helpless street dogs and the second was to crown Miss Hua Hin Thailand 2015. The evening started with a social hour where guests enjoyed free flow wine while mingling and enjoying the soulful sax of Daniel Stefani. The non-stop wine continued throughout the evening which moved on to the Amari’s well known sensational buffet. This Miss Hua Hin Thailand contest was broken into two segments with a musical interlude provided by DJ Takafusa from Japan. A raffle was held to win wonderful prizes which were donated by Hua Hin’s local business’s. New Hua Hin resident John Chambers made the largest private donation in the amount of 35,000 THB. The Miss Hua Hin contest got its start in November of 2014 at the very first fundraiser HOT Magazine hosted, which was also held at the Amari Hua Hin. The Miss Hua Hin Contest is not just about beauty but also a person’s charitable heart. Miss Hua Hin and her court will be role models for charitable giving and the spokeswomen for HOT Magazine’s charitable endeavors. The newly crowned Miss Hua Hin is Khun Kanthicha Chimsiri, nicknamed “Yui.” Khun Yui’s court includes Khun Panadda Phomtheap, nicknamed “Ning” and Warinthon Falshoj, nicknamed “Golf”. Miss Popular Vote was Khun Warunee Muangklang. One of Miss Hua Hin’s first duties will be going to the remote area of Tak in northern Thailand where HOT Magazine has adopted a school. Once there she and her court will be giving out donated blankets, food, school items and toys to the appreciative and needy children. Rescue Paws, the other co-host for the evening is a non-profit organization created by The Global Work & Travel Co. based in Australia, and XploreAsia, based in Thailand. Started in 2013, Rescue Paws aims to first stabilize and then reduce the stray animal population in Thailand over time through vaccinations, sterilization, adoptions, and education to get it to a manageable level.

Rescue Paws feeds and closely monitors the medical health of hundreds of stray dogs in the Hua Hin region. Treated animals are tagged, released and monitored as part of their daily routine. Wounded animals are assisted with medical treatment. Rescue Paws also conducts local and international adoptions and raises awareness through educational visits to local schools.

Have You Heard? Anantara’s Elephant Parade Hits Bangkok

O

n December 21st at Bangkok’s Anantara Riverside Resort a party was held in celebration of the opening of Elephant Parade® at Asiatique. Mike Spits, co-founder of Elephant Parade, was a special guest. Later in the evening the party moved on to one of the Anantara’s refurbished 100-year-old rice barges for a river cruise which ended at Asiatique to view the herd. The first major Elephant Parade was held in Rotterdam, Netherlands, in 2007 and has since been exhibited

42

January 15 - Februari 15, 2016

throughout some of the world’s largest cities including London, Amsterdam, Milan and Hong Kong. Since the Parade started more than 800 artists have participated and over 1000 elephants have been created; each an original piece of art. Famous international supporters of Elephant Parade include; Sir Richard Branson, the Duchess of York, Evelyn de Rothschild, Goldie Hawn, Khloe Kardashian, Katy Perry, Tommy Hilfiger, Paul Smith, Joanna Lumley, Michael Palin, Ricky Gervais and Prince Henrik of Denmark.

The event was originally created after founder Marc Spits and his son Mike visited the Friends of the Asian Elephant hospital in Lampang, Thailand, which treats sick and injured elephants. There they saw Mosha, a baby elephant who lost her leg after stepping on a landmine when only seven months old. Mosha was the first elephant to receive a prosthetic limb. She is fitted with a new leg every year, and must then learn to walk all over again. Mosha is always featured in each Elephant Parade exposition and there is a special Thai

themed painted prosthetic leg for the Bangkok Parade. The Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas has partnered with Elephant Parade® and Thailand’s top celebrities and artists to bring the world’s largest open air art exhibition, featuring 88 life-sized brightly decorated elephant statues, to town in honor of the 88th birthday of H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The 1.5 metre brightly coloured elephants are being exhibited throughout key locations in the city. The herd first

arrived at Siam Paragon on the 1st of December. Asiatique followed and then it was off to Lumpini Park, the largest and oldest park in the heart of the city where the elephants can be seen from the 15th to the 29th of January. Thai artists from all walks of life have designed their elephants, each an original piece of art, to paint a brighter future for the county’s national animal. Famous Thai supporters of Elephant Parade Bangkok include the actors Nirut Sirichanya, Tony Jaa, Sirinya Bishop and Daweerit Chullasapya and singers Pae

Arak, Kong Saharat and Pod Moderndog “I am so excited and honoured to be chosen to be one of the artists for the Elephant Parade. What a wonderful way to get people talking and taking action in elephant conservation,” Actress and Elephant Parade Bangkok Ambassador, Sirinya Bishop said. “The elephant is our country’s national animal and symbol, but somehow this once-revered and noble creature is now forced to beg for food on the busy and dangerous streets of the capital. I truly hope that this magnificent colourful pachyderm parade

will raise the awareness and inspire us all to take more concrete steps to ensure their survival and wellbeing.” In February a selection of elephants from the parade will be auctioned off at a charity gala dinner at Anantara Siam Bangkok with the proceeds going to the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation who in turn will select and fund a range of sustainable programs that benefit the elephants of Thailand including, Wildlife Alliance, Freeland, WildAid, Think Elephants and Thai Elephant Therapy Project. William E. Heinecke, Chairman and CEO of Minor International, the parent company of Anantara, Hotels Resorts & Spas, commented, “As a company, we are always looking for like-minded partners who share our true passion in saving the Asian elephant and Elephant Parade has long been known for its elephant conservation efforts in Thailand, which is why we feel this partnership is the ideal fit. The more awareness that is raised on the plight of domestic and wild elephants in Thailand the better the chances we have for their survival. I can’t think of a better way to raise awareness than bringing the largest open air art exhibition in support of Asian Elephants to Bangkok.”

Agnieszka “Aga” Radwańska from Poland. Radwańska is currently ranked 5th best in the world by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and achieved a career-high singles ranking of World No. 2 in July 2012. For her accomplishments in sport and for representing her country with distinction, in 2013 she was awarded the Gold Cross of Merit by Polish President Bronisław Komorowski. German born Angelique Kerber is

ranked #10 in the world and has won seven singles titles on the WTA tour, as well as eleven singles and three doubles on the ITF tour in her career. On 22 October 2012, she reached her best singles ranking of world number 5. Having made her professional debut in 2003, Kerber was launched into stardom upon suddenly reaching the semifinals of the 2011 US Open, at which time she was ranked 92 in the world. Since then,

she has broken into the Top 5 of the WTA Rankings. Sara Errani is from Italy and is currently ranked 20th. She has won eight career singles titles, and 25 career doubles titles, including five Grand Slam championships and five Premier Mandatory/Premier titles. Known as a clay-court specialist, Errani won three titles on clay going into the 2012 French Open, where she reached the

finals in both the singles and doubles tournaments, winning the doubles title with her partner Roberta Vinci. The female player who created the most excitement however was tennis legend Venus Williams who headlined the same tournament five years ago in Hua Hin. Venus from the U.S. is currently ranked # 7. Venus has been ranked World No. 1 in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association on three

separate occasions. She is credited as changing the women’s game and ushering a new, modern era of power and athleticism on the women’s professional tennis tour. She is also regarded as the best grass court player of her generation and is widely considered as one of the all-time greats of women’s tennis.

The day before the tournament the players attended a press conference at the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort where they were all staying. Former Thai tennis professional Paradorn Srichaphan hosted the event. Khun Paradorn, who was previously married to Natalie Glebova, a former Miss Universe, asked each player about their thoughts on Thailand and Hua Hin. Venus answered that she loved Hua Hin and very much enjoyed her time here five years ago. She remembered strolling thru the night market and said that Hua Hin was one of the few places in the world where she could see herself living, she just needed to convince her dad to move from Florida. A few hours later, Khun Suwat Liptapanlop, president of Thailand’s Lawn Tennis Association, hosted a cocktail party for the players, sponsors and VIP’s on the rooftop of his True Arena Hua Hin sports complex. New Year’s Eve day started early for the players with a 7AM call to the beach to give alms to the monks as they passed by. Later in the day the InterContinental’s Culinary Director Glen Roberts and his crew taught the ladies a few things about cooking Thai. 50

Things turned serious with court action starting at 5pm with the first match seeing Radwanska battling Kerber. The match ended in two sets with Radwanska the victor scoring 6 games to 4 and 6 games to 3. The last match of the evening saw Williams playing against Errani. Fan favorite Williams outplayed and outscored Erani 6 to 4 in the first set but then ended up losing the second and third sets to Errani 2-6 and 2-4. The players ended their evening on a high note, enjoying the InterContinental’s Gala New Year’s Eve Dinner and the fabulous fireworks show they are known for. The next morning Williams and Kerber hosted a tennis clinic for 50 lucky Thai kids at True Arena who were thrilled to be given pointers from the very talented ladies. Thanyapicha Nopjinda, 13, said: “I am very happy to have joined the clinic because they are both world-class players. They are also very friendly. “I use the techniques I learned today to improve my game. My goal is to become a national player and I want to play in international tournaments in the future.” Later the players headed over to Vana Nava for a tour of Hua Hin’s water jungle hosted by Managing Director Khun Proudputh Liptapanlop and Vana Nava’s G.M. Mike Fijas.

By 5pm it was all business once again with the first match seeing Kerber facing Williams. The match only went two sets with Kerber taking both, 6 sets to 4 and 6 sets to 3. Afterwards William’s said “I enjoyed every activity we had here. I like the people here and I like Hua Hin. Hopefully, I will be here again next year.” Although not happy about losing she was pleased with her tune-up for the upcoming Grand Slam. Angelique Kerber said “This has been a very pleasing trip to Hua Hin and it has also helped me a great deal to prepare for the Australian Open later this month.” The final match of the 2016 World Tennis Thailand Championship saw Radwanska playing against Errani. The match was dominated by #5 Radwanska from the get go, convincingly beating 20th ranked Errani in two sets 6-1, 6-3. There was a moment in the second set when it looked like Errani might force a third when she took 3 games in a row but in the end it was not meant to be. Next up for Radwanska is the Shenzhen Open in China while Errani and Kerber head to Australia for the Brisbane International. Williams is off to New Zealand for the ASB Classic.

Venus Williams, Tennis Legend & International Celebrity

T

he surname Williams is one that will be remembered for years to come, as one that has dominated the trophies in the world of tennis. Currently we hear more from younger sister Serena, but Venus Williams has been equally stellar in the sport, moreover, she has been credited for having substantially changed the face of the woman’s game, by bringing an additional brand of power, athleticism and speed to it. The American’s game might seem to have faded today, understandable as she is thirty-five already, but by looking back on the grandeur of her achievements, we realise how symbolic her figure has been for woman’s tennis in the twenty first century. Venus’s career earnings are over 32 million USD’s. From her earnings, investments and sponsorships she has amassed a self-worth of over 75 million USD’s. Williams embraced the professional game twenty-two years ago in 1994 and quickly became an impactful figure of the tennis world. New York Times contributor Robin Finn called her “the most unorthodox tennis prodigy her sport has ever seen.” Three years later, the six-foot-two-inch athlete was an international celebrity. After firing a warning shot at the 1997 U.S. Open where she was runner up to Martina Hingis, she proclaimed herself French Open doubles champion two years later by partnering with her sister Serena. From there the trophies just kept coming.

56

January 15 - Februari 15, 2016

Her first singles title would be on her favourite grass surface, on which she clinched Wimbledon at the crack of the century. Following that she would get another chance at the tournament in the Big Apple, where she defeated Lindsay Davenport like she had done at the all England Club a few weeks prior. The epic All-American battles would not stop there, as time and again, she would end up facing her sister Serena in finals, a feat that has occurred eight times to date. Williams has won four Olympic gold medals, one in singles and three in women’s doubles. She and her sister Serena have won more Olympic gold medals than any other female tennis players. At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Williams became only the second player to win Olympic gold medals in both singles and doubles at the same Olympic Games, after Helen Wills Moody in 1924. Williams is equally symbolic in the tennis world for being the first African American to be crowned world number one, a feat that she achieved in 2002. Her dominance since then was contrasted by a strong competition with Serena, to whom she came runner up in five consecutive Grand Slam finals between then and 2003. This in turn would prevent her from clinching the Career Grand Slam feat, which to date she is yet to complete. Despite this, Williams remains a legend of modern tennis, amassing a total of seven singles Grand Slam titles and thirteen doubles Grand Slam titles. Williams’ game is powerful. An energetic baseliner, her game consists of dominating from the back, with tremendous force on her serve and her forehand drive. Her mobility is something that has been remarked upon repeatedly, granting her fantastic court coverage and the ability to reach short shots at the net. The mobility would be in vain however, if not accompanied by stamina. Williams combines both and is well known for her hard work. Williams has an exceptional advantage when reaching high balls, setting up volleys and defending lob shots, as her 180 centimeters height combined with her jump give her great vertical mobility. Williams, like Sharapova’s Sugarpova and other top class athletes, has her own personal brand which goes by the name of EleVen. Mostly selling sportswear, it was launched in 2012. The brand, according to Williams, is called EleVen because “it’s one better than ten”, which in turn is also a word play with her name Venus. Currently ranked at world number seven with thirty-five years of age, Williams is going as strong as true champions do and we can be sure that she is far from done in the world of women’s tennis, the one she revolutionised almost 20 years ago.

histories in a vast array of fields. From the arts of painting, architecture or music, to the bellicose tales of confronted city states longing for hegemony power hegemony. From literature and poetry of the likes of Dante, to realist discourse in the form of Machiavelli. Playwrights and novelists, philosophers and scientists, all have been immortalised within the timeless beauty of Italy’s various legendary cities. Of those many playwrights, the most iconic one is

without a doubt William Shakespeare. Shakespeare, who lived at the height of Renaissance, was enamoured by this magnificent place and set thirteen of his plays there. There is one particular tragedy amongst those however, which embodies the essences of love, heartbreak, passion and longing: Romeo and Juliet. Set in the marvellous city of Verona, it is one of the most lauded and well regarded works from the playwright.

How does this connect to Thailand? Very simple: The province of Prachinburi has constructed a smaller replica of the Italian city of Verona, with wonderful details which are surprisingly similar to those found in the northern Italian destination. This month, HOT Magazine has the magnificent opportunity of reviewing the historical city of Verona in Italy and contrasting it with the fantastic replica of it at Tub Lan, Prachinburi. Verona is located in Veneto, a region famous too for its capital Venice, and the grandeur of its canals and architecture. But it has nothing to envy, as its own architectonic marvels have awarded it World Heritage Site award by the UNESCO. We focus first on the Verona Gate, known too as the Porta Borsai. This gate has its historical emergence in the

first century A.D. over two thousand years ago, and is thought to have been remodelled over a previously extant structure. Emperor Gallienus’ rule saw a further remodelling of it in the third century and small modifications have been made to it since. Made out of limestone, the gate was known in Roman times as Porta Lovia and was located by a now inexistent temple which was made in honour to the god Jupiter. The gate at the Tub Lan does not have to temple either, but is well replicated and has a very similar feeling to the original Italian gate. Amongst the most interesting and iconic sites of Verona is the Casa di Giulietta, which translates to “Juliet’s House”. The house was built in the early fourteenth century in the street

Via Cappello. It claimed to be Juliet’s residence due perhaps to the similarity of the balconies that Shakespeare described throughout the story in the play. The house today sits empty, other than the statue of Juliet, in the courtyard and the legendary balcony from which the interactions with Romeo took place. The statue, which is made out of bronze, is arguably the most visited site in the town and has is worn on the cavity of its chest, due to the people stroking it. The reason behind it lies in the tradition which states that upon touching the right breast of the figure, whoever does so will be granted good luck and wonderful fortune in relationships and love. On the entrance, one can witness a collective of thousands of names written across the wall. This is known as the Juliet wall and

it is thought that doing so in couple, will bind the two fated people in eternal unison. Some people go a step further and cling what goes on to become a collective of over a thousand small love letters stuck on the walls. Eventually there are so many stuck letters that employees have to take them down in order to make space for more on a regular basis. The statue at Tab Lan’s replica of the monument to Juliet is yet to be worn bare, but nobody is to say that the tradition will not pick up in Thailand too! Il Lago di Garda is one of the most pristine and beautiful sites located at a mid-point between Brescia and Verona, and is an iconic location for those who wish to spend some time by the water. The Garda is the largest lake in Italy, spanning a length of over fifty kilometres, a width of almost seventeen in its largest extremity and a depth of almost three hundred and forty six metres. North of the lake are a collective of mountain ranges whilst plots of habited land are found in the south, such as the town of Sirmione, a popular destination amongst those who venture there. The Lake Garda at the Tab Lan is of course not fifty kilometres in length, but is equally fantastic and combines fantastically with another replicated structure, the Castelvecchio. The world, which literally translates into “Old Castle is the most prominent and salient construction of the dynasty ruled by the Scaliger in the thirteenth century. In Italy, it is located on what was previously the fortress of a Roman city and was built with the purpose of protecting the various rulers who resided there from neighbouring city states such as that of Venice. Napoleon Bonaparte resided in it briefly during the Napoleonic wars and it was duly refortified by other forces that took over it and adorned it with canons and stronger walls. A bridge was built at the site which went over the Adige River and at the time was the largest bridge in the world, spanning at almost fifty metres in length. Made out of rich red coloured bricks, it bears the legend of the designer having

62

January 15 - Februari 15, 2016

been awarded a sword which had previously belonged to Saint Martin. Other stories tell that he came to the inaugural ceremony mounted on a horse, to gallop away in case it crumbled. The Castelvecchio at Tab Lan is wonderfully replicated and combines its bridge across the lake, which allows you to access the two sides of the city with ease in order to visit all the other sites. Another wonderful site of the city of Verona is the Torre dei Lamberti, rising over an imperious eighty four metres in height. Building it was an iconic struggle that began in the twelfth century, after it was stuck by lightning half way through the construction work, after which its restoration was delayed until the fifteenth century across a period spanning sixteen years. A prominent clock was added to the face of the tower in the eighteenth century, after which it has remained untouched. The tower’s two bells have been used across the years for specific purposes. The first called Marangona is the smallest of the two and is rung during fires and announces work times. The larger one is called Regno and was formerly used to invoke the populace to arms or to invoke city councils. The Lamberti tower at the Tub Lan is not as high as the original but is just as charming, granting the opportunity to feel the essence of the city of Verona. The Verona at Tub Lan is a wonderful place to which to go if your aim is to explore this iconic city over a weekend but do not wish to leave the country. The replica has been very successfully created and other than perhaps Italy’s northern weather, it offers a charming and comparable experience to the visitor. If you have nothing to do this month, we recommend that you visit, perhaps you will then understand why in addition to Juliet’s presence, Romeo asserted that there was “no world without Verona.”

BE KIND TO ONE ANOTHER

HAPPINESS THE GOAL OF LIFE

At the end of the end, as we shuffle off this Earth, it matters not how much money you have, or any of your worldly possessions. What will matter most is how you treated people along the way and the quality of richness in your life’s relationships. Were people better off having known you? Did you have a positive impact on the lives of others? These things matter most. What did you contribute to life and living? Be kind to one another.

There is a very popular song out today (I enjoy this song very much too) by Pharrell Williams called “Happy.” It’s not without reason that at the time of this writing this song on You Tube has 673,628,348 views. Let’s explore the subject of happiness.

If we all applied the simple statement of being kind to one another, we would, of course, transform the world and the way in which we live. We may not be able to change the world overnight but we can certainly change the world around us, our circle’s influence, and our intimate circles of life. And we can do this right now, today. So what are you waiting for? Kindness is like a solvent. Being kind can calm the fear, anger, frustration, despair, or whatever the case may be. It can defuse a crisis or prevent a potential nightmare of sorts. It introduces calmness into any situation. Being kind makes people feel good. Who doesn’t want to feel good? It’s courageous to be kind, especially when the circumstance before you is most challenging. Kindness is contagious, therefore it also invites an act of kindness in return. Remember, to the world you may be one person but to one person you may be the world. Be kind to one another. Never forget how fragile we really are, especially in times like these.

“IT’S COOL TO BE KIND”

Some would say this is the goal of life. In the humanly sense, to a large extent I would agree. We are all striving to be happy. Joy and pleasure come from that bliss of connectedness that is the soul, our spirit, which you can feel deep inside. You get it from that connection, not from money, and when you have that connection you will feel it, and there will be smiles and laughter. These are the reflections of the moments that really count! I have seen people in my travels that are very much less fortunate than others, yet they are some of the happiest people you will ever meet. Much can be learned from this. Perhaps contentment with what you have, a loving family, good friends, or perhaps faith? Conversely, I have seen people with extraordinary wealth and opportunity and some of them are among the meanest, nastiest, most shallow people who are very far south of an inkling of true happiness, and from this there is also much to be learned. Possibly the reality of greed, selfishness, corruption? Now of course that is not to say that the wealthy and more fortunate are all like this, some are very caring and giving people and are happy as well as in the case of the less fortunate, where some are very unhappy. Since happiness seems to be the goal of life, something we all would like to have and sustain, let’s look into this a bit. We know one thing for sure, money and material things do not create happiness. So, what is happiness? As you look around, you can find all different kinds of definitions for happiness. Here are some of the basic examples of which some, I believe, really do not equate to happiness but can contribute to happiness. They are: good fortune, prosperity, a state of well-being and contentment, joy, and a pleasurable or satisfying experience. Wikipedia defines happiness as “a mental or emotional state of well-being characterized by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy.” It is of such fundamental importance to the human condition that “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” were deemed to be unalienable rights by the United States Declaration of Independence. The United Nations declared March 20th the “International Day of Happiness” to recognize the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal goals.”

68

January 15 - Februari 15, 2016

“Trying to be happy by accumulating possessions is like trying to satisfy hunger by taping sandwiches all over your body” – George Carlin.

I would further define happiness as not only freedom from suffering, freedom from fear, freedom from want and need, but also a feeling of pleasant contentment and fulfillment on a cellular level, physically, spiritually, and mentally at varying levels or degrees. You know, as I think about this, it seems worthy of our time to briefly explore the obstacles to obtaining happiness so perhaps we can overcome these to at least some extent with the hopes of obtaining more happiness. If it were only so easy to attain happiness like that pop song says by the artist Bobby McFerrin, back in the 1980’s “Don’t Worry, be Happy.” Maybe it is? Let’s have a look at this.

Being competent and productive and having a purpose in life is grounding and uplifting. Keep abreast of critical information from credible sources. Turn off the negative junk food news, junk television, junk movies, and junk music, etc. Be selective about who and what you expose yourself to. Don’t think in terms of scarcity; life is meant to be abundant. Put yourself in a state of joy. Do the things that make you feel good and be with people that make you feel good. Go to places that make you feel good. Experience what you do and have in life that makes you feel good. And stand very far away from gossip and if it reaches you, let it end there. Gossip is very unproductive and does not contribute to your desired state of happiness; it’s like a cancer.

So how to obtain more happiness? For starters, we need to recognize truth and then identify and overcome barriers and obstacles. In a previous chapter in this book called “Loneliness and the Circle of Life,” we covered cleansing the circles of our life, and this may be one of many tools we can use towards obtaining happiness. It is important whom we surround ourselves with, whom we choose to have in our circles. Your life was not intended to be an unhappy one. It was not intended to be one of scarcity, pain, and suffering; these are the intentions of others. Your intention can override this, so don’t buy the lie; this can end today.

I also find the space around us to be a contributing factor, so cleaning up the clutter and being competent in everything we do might be beneficial. You know, clean hands make a happy life? Cleanliness is next to Godliness? All of these things are like putting order in and carrying on at a more elevated level of decency and survival - it feels good.

Remember again the Bobby McFerrin song “Don’t Worry, be Happy” and Pharrell Williams’ huge hit today called “Happy.” Why were these songs such big hits? One reason is the simple, pleasant message about happiness, which is something we all desire and not just situationally, but rather for sustainment. So by applying the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Sweetheart) concept, you can be with people you like and do the things you enjoy. Stop and smell the roses along this journey. In this lifetime we are born and we will die, so in between we better have some enjoyment, wouldn’t you say?

DON’T WORRY BE HAPPY!

We might start out by reassessing ourselves, who we are, and how we operate. It seems we can be somewhat habitual, then we kind of get on autopilot with such habits. Take a look at the nonoptimal habits and replace them with more optimal ones. For example, being healthy, eating right, and exercising. Being honest with oneself and others and kind to one another and perhaps performing random acts of kindness by spreading a sparkle of your light, love. Being charitable and helping those in need. I find that if we are operating with high integrity, encompassing more than just ourselves, and applying the “doing unto others as you would have them do unto you” rule, are all steps that can lead to happier moments. Having a small, close circle of friends is a true treasure but not to be solely relied upon for your state of happiness. Maintaining independence and self-reliance is grounding and actually contributes to sustainable friendships.

GRATITUDE As we go through the days of our lives, there are moments and periods where we all struggle. You know, when things are just not going right whether it be financial, relationships, depression, or loneliness, etc. Try this: take a long walk somewhere nice, be it your favorite park, the beach, or any place you enjoy and simply look around at the beauty that surrounds you. Then find some alone time and look at all the things in your life that you do have and that you are, and should, indeed be grateful for. Perhaps say them out loud or write them down, but most importantly feel it sincerely, whatever it is. You may be grateful for a good family, your beautiful children, for the job you have, or for your good health. You may be grateful for happiness that nature brings you. You may be grateful that you woke up that day! Whatever it is, be grateful. Each and every day acknowledge what you are grateful for. This can be as simple as the pleasure you had from eating a slice of pizza, or that strong cup of coffee in the morning or the fact that the Yankees won yet another

70

January 15 - Februari 15, 2016

World Series! Things will change in your feeling world when you have an attitude of gratitude. Simple, yet true. Okay, so now what is gratitude and why is this so powerful and so important? Like happiness, gratitude can be defined in many ways. Wikipedia spells it out this way: “Gratitude, thankfulness, gratefulness, or appreciation is a feeling or attitude in acknowledgment of a benefit that one has received or will receive. The experience of gratitude has historically been a focus of several world religions and has been considered extensively by moral philosophers.” A wide range of material is available on this subject. I worked in a program with a coach named Lee Brower in Chicago about ten years ago, and he shares a nice little story that sheds light on the power of an attitude of gratitude in the book and full-length movie called “The Secret.” Gratitude, in many ways, can help you to achieve success. It is also a way to help one put things into perspective

so it is not just about “I, me, mine” and puts selfishness where it belongs (out of the picture all together). Also, when we fall on hard times or experience some tragedy or when we are affected by the worldly events which wear and tear us down (knowingly or unknowingly), gratitude helps you appreciate every moment and every good thing in life. Gratitude can help open up your heart, and when this happens many new doors and opportunities seem to arrive daily at the doorstep of your life. What I have observed about gratitude is that it changes your perspective about life. You are able to be thankful for the beauty that surrounds you. We shift how we operate in life away from the human and more from the spirit within - from perhaps being an unaware, unloving, reactive, and ungrateful garden variety grown human being, to an aware, kind, productive, and grateful spiritual being. Gratitude helps to set us on a much needed course correction and helps to put us on a path of a more purposeful and meaningful life. And this, my friend, is critical as this leads

to more contentment, which is a component of happiness. And since happiness seems to be the goal of life, I would consider gratitude as an important step to achieving happiness. Each day I strive to practice an attitude of gratitude and again, we are creatures of habit so to speak. Change your

habits - change your life! Each day consider upon awakening and before sleeping, writing down or vocalizing (and feel it in your feeling world), all that you are grateful for. Go ahead and try this. Your thoughts and feelings have much to do with your happiness. So when things seem troublesome or desperate, harmonize your feeling world.

One way to do this is through appreciation and gratitude for all good things in your life. We don’t need to do this just once a year at Thanksgiving. Try it daily; you will see and feel a difference. Gratitude can open your heart and once this happens, you have opened the door to all kinds of possibilities.

LET EVERY DAY BE THANKSGIVING If you would like to read more of John’s essays you can do so by buying his book “Misconceptions and Course Corrections, A Collection of Critical Essays for our Times.” Available from Amazon.com and you can connect with him by visiting his blog website, www. johnmichaelchambers.com.

Bangkok Light of Happiness

T

HOT MAGAZINE RECOMMEND

here are some things that simply marvel the eye because they are hard to escape. That is the case of the Bangkok Light of Happiness exhibition that was presented this past December. On the thirtieth of the month, a wonderful display of over five million illuminated and colourful light bulbs was

74

January 15 - Februari 15, 2016

inaugurated by the mayor of the capital in Lan Khon Muang, the large location in front of the City Hall’s offices on the Din So Road. With this move, the parade is meant to represent the provision of illumination and joy for the inauguration of the coming year. The greatest wishes for Bangkokians’ success throughout

2016 are said to be exposed on these lights, which will shine bright until the coming thirty first of January. There were large crowds attracted by this display, which granted people the opportunity to formulate and express their hopes for the coming three hundred

and sixty five days. The HOT Magazine crew had a chance to listen to a few resolutions that the visitors spoke of with news outlets: “I would like to be like Batman, because he is loyal and moral” was one of the more extravagant but hopeful and good hearted answers when asked by the press. But others were full of expectation too: “I would like to be like Lady Gaga, because she’s unique and nobody can copy her”. Others wished for more achievable feats such as being cultural representatives of Bangkok in order to provide citizens

with glee and delight, similar to that brought to everybody by this light display. The spectacular site, which was given a thirty nine million baht budget, bears a number of fantastic light patterns of different shapes and sizes, structures of overarching light tunnels and multichromatic designs which grant a truly marvellous glittering spectacle. It is recommended not to attend if you suffer from epilepsy however, as flickering and flashing is part of the extravagant set

up. This was especially the case on the night after it opened, which was that of New Year’s Eve. A wonderful gathering of people witnessed not only a complete light show of flickering bulbs and neon lights, but a fantastic display of cracking fireworks which illuminated the night sky and transitioned the last evening of 2015 to the first early morning of the New Year 2016. There were smiles and festivities amongst the vast attending crowd and that truly inaugurated the month long exhibition.

The winner of the contest will be awarded a whopping one hundred thousand baht, something
