Dear Reader Welcome to Issue 6 Volume 4. This month we start out by taking you to Hua Hin’s Mozza Mia Mozzarella Deli & Wine Bar. Here the emphasis in on homemade cheese’s, Italian food and wonderful wines. Read why it should be on your must visit list on page 14. Making the world a better place is something we can all do. In its simplest form it can be opening the door for someone or offering a kind word, to the other end of the spectrum with billionaires pledging to give away the vast majority of their fortunes to improve the lives of others. This month we introduce you to Andrew Bunnag who after he and his wife adopted a local street dog decided he wanted to do more to help the plight of Hua Hin's homeless and helpless street dogs. Read his story on page 28. Next, HOT Magazine sits down with Grahame Beecham. Grahame’s been involved in the Hua Hin Real Estate scene for years. This month he opens up about his new development that he and his business partner, successful Hua Hin developer Eakkarat Suppagarn are about to launch, that’s on page 42. Our monthly “Let’s Stay” feature takes us to the 5-star Plaza Athenee Bangkok. A Royal Meridien hotel, it’s fresh from an extensive remodel where its award winning interior pays special tribute to its royal roots. The hotel is built on the site of Kandhavas, the royal palace of H.R.H. Princess Valaya Alongkorn. See why you’ll want to check yourself in on page 46. This month’s “Let’s Go” takes us to the province of Phetchaburi. It’s home to one of Thailand’s most popular National Parks, Kaeng Krachan as well as cave shrines, rivers, dam’s and great beaches. Come along for the ride on page 62. Finally, our “Let’s Check-In” takes us to Bon Bon, a restaurant, bar and adult playground located in Bangkok’s popular Thong Lo neighborhood. Who says only kids should have a playground? Come join in the fun on page 70. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month’s issue. As always, thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

L et’s Meet, Sylvia Marsden
What do you like most about Hua Hin? I love the fact that it has absolutely incredible beaches. Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park is close by with abundant wildlife and hiking trails. The convenient proximity to Bangkok allows for easy city escapes, but most of all the fact that Hua Hin is such a well-run, clean city makes it a pleasure to live here. What is your favorite restaurant and why? I was lucky enough to have found Sakura Japanese restaurant at the top of Soi 94. It is a quaint, family run restaurant with incredibly warm staff and delicious sushi. What do you like to do in your free time and why? Believe it or not, I actually really enjoy visiting other Spas and Health Resorts when I’m not working. I also love spending time in Nature and with animals – it’s important for me and brings balance into my life. I’ve always lived near the ocean, and feel the need to be close to water, so inevitably beach activities are part of my daily life. My family are my life-force and I enjoy spending a lot of my free time connecting with them as well as with friends. What would you recommend to newcomers to do in Hua Hin and why?
What is your full name and age? Sylvia Marsden, 36 What is your current Job Position? Director of Spa at THE BARAI Spa and Residential Suites How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? I had not visited Hua Hin in the past. I moved here in March 2016 What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? I was aware of the past and current influence of the Royal family due to their residence in Hua Hin. I knew of some key luxury resort establishments well known within the industry. What do you like most about your profession?
12
June 15 - July 15 , 2016
I have always been interested in health and wellbeing. My profession is very diverse. I am fortunate to be able to work in the growing Wellness industry and there are some really exciting developments happening globally. I always work as part of a team, which I love! I get to meet like-minded people daily and it is so rewarding to play a part in helping others to improve their overall health and happiness. I consider myself extremely lucky, as Confucius said: “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life”. What do you like least about your profession? Often people have a misconception that working in a Spa is calm and relaxing due to the ‘zen’ environment. In actual fact it can be challenging ‘behind the scenes’ to constantly ensure a smooth and calm atmosphere in the front of house.
If you are not already here for the Kite surfing, it is a brilliant place to learn in optimal weather conditions. A trip out to Hua Hin Hills Vineyards is also a great way to spend the day. There are some fantastic markets in Hua Hin, ranging from the very local and traditional style to trendy and hip, vintage - style markets. Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you? I grew up in a small town called ‘Swakopmund’ in Namibia (Southern Africa) where we still speak German. What is the most outlandish thing you have ever done and why? Anyone that knows me will confirm I’m not an adrenalin seeker. However, I did abseil (yes without any assistance other than a rope) down the side of the Iguazu Waterfalls in Brazil)…..and I would never do it again!

Mozza Mia Restaurant

June 15 - July 15 , 2016
M
ozza Mia is a Mozzarella Deli & Wine Bar located on the ground floor of the G Hua Hin Resort Mall on Soi 94, just off Petchakasem and minutes from the center of town. Their menu features an excellent choice of dishes from smaller, Italian style bar snacks like cured meat platters, homemade Burrata, ricotta and mozzarella cheeses (which are their specialties) to more substantial pasta dishes such as spaghetti, lasagna and pizza, which has just recently been added to their menu. Their pizza crust is thin, which is the way I like it, and they also feature large dollops of fresh smoked mozzarella on each slice which really adds to the overall flavor. Fresh flown in oysters are offered on a regular basis too. The night we were there we started with their smoked Salmon salad. The flavorful smoked Salmon is imported and served over lettuce, cherry tomatoes & shavings of parmesan with a light vinaigrette Next up was there popular mixed Cold Cut’s. Their Cold Cuts menu has 5 different choices, we settled on their “C1” Mix Cold Cut’s which included a selection of Ham, Finocchiona, Mortadella, Salami and Coppa which is similar to prosciutto. We started the cold cuts with a bottle of their Pezzo Morgana Reserva Salice Salentino 2012 which is bottled by the Italian Li Veli Winery. We were told that it was one of the most popular wines featured at a recent wine tasting Mozza Mia held. It certainly paired well with all the dishes served during the evening. Next from the Kitchen was their Burrata with rocket salad. Burrata is a fresh Italian cheese made from mozzarella and cream. The outer shell is solid mozzarella, while the inside contains both mozzarella and cream, giving it an unusual, soft texture. The Burrata was wrapped in Parma Ham and served over rocket salad and cherry tomatoes all drizzled with Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar. Their Spaghetti Vogole Salmon arrived next which was a wonderful mixture of smoked salmon, green and black olives, cherry tomatoes, garlic, chili and basil. Fully flavored and with a bit of a kick from the chili’s. The final dish to appear was their Signature Mozza Mia Pizza, which as mentioned above, is a very thin crusted pizza. The Mozza Mia is topped with Parma Ham, Cherry Tomatoes, Stracciatella and Smoked Mozzarella and lots of it. It currently sits at the top of my best pizza in Hua Hin list and I’ve had cravings for it ever since first served. Mozza Mia is a casual restaurant that’s great for a quiet meal or a fun get together with friends. Their wine list is extensive, they offer inside and outside dining and parking is always available at the G Hua Hin Resort. For reservations or information call 032 900 250 or visit their facebook page, facebook. com/mozzamiahuahin.

HOT AROUND HUA HIN SURF 102.5 FM IS ON THE AIR Hua Hin and Cha Am have recently see the return of Surf 102.5 FM after an absence of many years. Not only has it returned but it has done so with a new dynamic; fantastic music, great shows and really affordable advertising. It has a new stronger transmitter with a wider reach that on a good day can extend down as far as Pranburi bringing all the communities together on one accessible platform. The radio station not only broadcasts on the 102.5 FM frequency but is also available online, via the radio station’s website, www.huahinsurffm.com, as well as the AWOL website, www.awolonline. net, and the Tunein radio app for most mobile devices. The revival of Surf FM began last November, when Richard Buckle, a radio professional for more than twenty years, was brought in as an advisor by station owner, Khun Pongsawatch Charoennithithat (Khun Ju), to update the systems, music programming content and advertising, The result is a much improved and contemporary output designed to appeal to the vast majority of the area’s listeners - expats, families, retirees and
Thais with a taste for western pop music. Improvements are continuing with the launch last week of the new Breakfast Show live and direct every weekday morning with Steve Johnson in the hotseat and more is planned !. The station survives on its advertisers, so support from the local business community is vital to its survival and already the Novotel, True Arena, Homeless Furniture and others have taken advantage of this unique platform to reach and expand their markets while keeping the station on air.
Surf 102.5 FM is part of the community and welcomes everyone to get involved. Let them know if you have an event or a happening going on locally and they will share it on air to help make your event or happening a real success. Keep on Surfin with 102.5 FM

HEAD EAST EAST Rooftop Bar & Lounge is located on the 5th floor of the G Hua Hin Resort & Mall on soi 94, just of Petchakasem. Here they focus on quality cocktails. The motto is ‘quality over quantity’, meaning they take the time to prepare a quality cocktail every time. Two of their quality drinks will be the equivalent of three elsewhere. You can also choose if you want 3cc or 5cc of alcohol in each drink. Passion fruit Mojito is the best recommended. In addition to drinks they also serve
easy finger foods and creative snacks to accompany their liquid libations. They don’t classify themselves as a restaurant, but it’s always nice to have something small to eat when drinking and socializing while enjoying the pleasant ambiance accompanied by live music or DJs . East’s resident DJ is DJ Smiley but they also bring in special guest DJ’s from around the world. In May, direct from Yokohama Japan, DJ Takafusa entertained the house for several nights. HYATT THAILAND CONTINUES TO MAKE A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE ON SOCIETY Hua Hin, Thailand – To support Hyatt’s global Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative – the ‘Hyatt Thrive’ project, Hyatt Regency Hua Hin and Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok joined forces to build a check dam for villagers in Phetchaburi, to help improve water supply for the local community, especially during this dry season. With the current situation of water shortages which have been affecting the country’s agriculture and water supply, over 80 staff from Hyatt Regency Hua Hin and Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok including the management and hotel’s
team members volunteered to build the check dam at Lin Chang Temple in order to help local villagers in Nong Ya Plong District, Phetchaburi. “I have been part of the Hyatt family for more than nine years and am always delighted to encourage the team to get involved in community service events. This year, I am honoured to lead this check dam project as we recognise the importance of a good water supply. Hopefully this CSR activity will make a difference for the Phetchaburi community,” said Christian Wurm, General Manager of Hyatt Regency Hua Hin and THE BARAI.
Using natural resources, such as soils and rocks, the two Hyatt hotels in Thailand worked together and successfully built the check dam and helped the villagers for a long period during this drought crisis. The check dam interrupts the flow of water, reduces the flow velocity and helps to maintain water for a long period during the dry season. Not only does the check dam serve as a water supply for the locals themselves and for agriculture in those areas all year round, it also serves as food sources for the villagers, sources such as fishes and freshwater algae. Additionally, those freshwater sources can also bring income to the locals during the drought.
CHIVA SOM, SOCIAL WELFARE THROUGH LOCAL OUTREACH AT BA-MAK, KAREN VILLAGE Continuing in our second year, the Chiva-Som Integrated Wellness team partnered with Jungle Aid to provide support for the Karen village at Ba-Mak, a remote area of Thailand near Pala-U. The focus is to support their insufficient local healthcare facilities and increase access to food and education. The Medical Mission team comprised a doctor, physiologist, pharmacist, nurse, fitness & recreation instructor, and healthcare advisor. The Mission conducted an initial assessment that highlighted follow-up work that would be beneficial to them, to provide acute medical attention for a range of conditions, access to clean water and adequate nutrition. This approach is required to reduce chronic illness and address malnutrition-related academic retardation and stunted physical development. The Mission delivered workshops on health, hygiene and preventative medicine, and works to ensure the villagers have clothes, and books and pens to help the children study.

HOT AROUND HUA HIN THE 7TH ANNUAL ROTARY INSTALLATION NIGHT Rotarians and friends of the Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin celebrated the most important night of the Club’s year at the Amari Hua Hin Resort and Spa on May 21st. This was a night of fun and fellowship. One hundred and twenty-five attendees, club members of the Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin, their families and friends, as well as many guests from Hua Hin and other places in Thailand and abroad joined and enjoyed an entertaining evening. Also in attendance were the Thai representatives from the Rotary Club of Hua Hin and Pran Buri, the Rotarians from Bangkapi and Ratchaburi, as well as from Philadelphia/ USA and last but not least from the sister club Bandar Sungai Petani in Malaysia. President Christoph Leonhard held a short speech not only for handing over the reins to the next President Gianni Battistini but also for reviewing the past decade and saying Good-Bye. He will leave Hua Hin for a new challenge as the General Manager of an Amari Hotel at one of the beautiful islands of the Maldives. Gianni Battistini, the incoming President, also talked to the audience for a few minutes, expressing his goals and the Rotary motto of 2016/2017: Rotary Serving Humanity. One highlight was the multinational flag parade comprising 16 representatives of the Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin carrying the flags of the 16 countries where the 45 members come from. The event was accompanied with an oriental dancing show as well as live music. Again, it was a great party with fun and amusement‌ topped by collecting a large sum of money which will be used for people in need.

HOT AROUND HUA HIN BERINGER WINE NIGHT AT SHERATON'S LUNA LA PRAN Founded in 1875, Beringer Vineyards is "the oldest continuously operating winery in California's Napa Valley. It is listed in under the National Register of Historical Places and as a California Historical Landmark and was the first California winery to offer public tours after Prohibition's repeal in 1933. On May 27th, saving us all a trip to Napa Valley, the Sheraton Hua Hin Resort & Spa hosted their Beringer Affair by the Sea at Luna Pran, their beach restaurant in Pranburi. Beringer is arguably the best thing to come out of the Napa valley, and the Sheraton's Director of Food & Beverage, Leonard Faust and his team worked their magic pairing a selection of tantalizing canapés with some of the best wines Beringer has to offer. Burnt Foie Gras, Mango Maki Rolls and Roast Rib Eye of Australian Beef were well received with guests also fawning over the Luna Lanai Restaurant's Chocolate Espresso Mousse and Chocolate and Pistachio Roulade. The Sheraton's sommelier was on hand to walk wine enthusiasts through this one-of-a-kind experience in a relaxed and cozy atmosphere with refreshing sea breeze. Guests of the sell-out event declared their surprise and delight at the unique harmonies and contrasts achieved by pairing creative canapés with Beringer wines that seemed made for each other. Stay tuned to Sheraton Hua Hin Resort & Spa’s Community to find out when the next wine night at Luna La Pran will take place www.sheraton.com/huahin www.sheratonhuahin.com www.facebook.com/sheratonhuahin www.flickr.com/photos/sheratonhuahin

TRUE ARENA NEWS
TENNIS FOR LIFE HUA HIN losses. These kind of habits help players to concentrate, get in the competitive mode and provides them confidence. As Arthur Ashe said “One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation.” There are many factors that decide the outcome of the match that we have no control over such as the way our opponents play, the weather, the way we feel, the umpire’s decisions (if there is one) and opponent’s line calls. Here are some great habits that you can use:
Controlling outcomes in tennis matches and in life is not in our hands. What is in our control is taking care of details, our attitude and effort.
-Before the match: Eat a light meal, arrive early for your matches, get a warm up routine, listen to your favorite songs, prepare snacks and drinks, rackets (strings, grips), extra clothes, towels, wrist bands, extra shoes, have a plan for the match and analyze your opponents game.
People think that tennis players are superstitious. A great example is Rafael Nadal, he places his water bottles the same way every time, sprints from the net to the baseline to warm up, he takes his underwear out of his shorts and many others. Rafa does that every single time, it does not matter if he wins or if he
-During the match: Stay positive, visualize your serve, use breathing to calm yourself and recover, take time between points, have a routine before serving, hold the racket with your opposite hand to give your hitting arm a break, always keep your head up, do not show discomfort/frustration to your
opponents and motivate yourself after a good point. -After the match: Stretch, shower, relax, eat a healthy meal, write about the match (what worked, what needs to be improved), think of your next practice/ match, keep track of your matches (opponent, score) and recover. Taking care of things that you can control, preparing your mind and body will help you feeling more confident going into the match. Having a positive attitude and giving 100% effort every time will help you improve not only your game but also your life. If you are interested in learning more about the mental aspect of tennis, and would like to take your game to the next level, please come visit us at True Arena Hua Hin. We offer private lessons, group lessons, after school programs, high performance programs and summer camps for children (starting on the 27th of June). Hasta la vista, Arturo Navarro Guzman

EMAUX” E-Power Variable Speed Pump utilizes the latest Permanent Magnet Motors (PMM) technology, it produces a magnetic field between the rotor and windings. The energy saving is derived from the ability to reduce the RPM of the motor itself. The standard motor consumes electricity to induce the magnetic field into the rotor; on the other hand, PMM motor gains efficiency by the magnets working to spin the rotor, which achieves efficiency ratings of 90%*. Rescue Dog Portraits
O
n December 28th of last year, those of us who are Facebook friends with Rescue Paws, a dog rescue center here in Hua Hin, had this lovely picture of “Chocolate” appear on our timeline with the following text; “This gorgeous fluffy girl's name is Chocolate, and she's just too cute for words! Chocolate was wondering along the side of a very busy Phetkasem road all by herself, looking very lost and disorientated, so our guess is that she was dumped as yet another unwanted puppy. She's in excellent condition and very good
Chocolate /Chewy Bear spirit, not shy to let herself be heard, and loving playing with the other puppies in our care. 28

Chocolate is available for adoption - please contact Hanli at admin@rescue-paws.org should you be interested in giving this girl a forever home.” Chocolate’s story is a happy one in that she was adopted into a very loving home by Andrew and Mutsuko Bunnag and was given the new name Chewy Bear. At a recent Hua Hin Business Network gathering Andrew and Mutsuko met up with Jaco Kleinloog and Hanli Engelbrecht from Rescue Paws. During the conversation Andrew stated that he would really like to do something for their other dogs who are in need of forever homes. It was thru this discussion that they came up with the idea to do a portrait session with their other dogs, a photoshoot as if they were in a studio environment with a neutral background. They thought that this would keep the focus more on the subject of the shoot which would be the puppies rather than just shooting the dogs in their kennel enclosure’s. The problem was that they couldn’t bring all the dogs and puppies to the studio so Andrew had to improvise creating a studio like setting at Rescue Paws. According to Andrew, “It was a tougher photoshoot than I had first anticipated due to the fact that it’s nearly impossible to have puppies sitting still and posing for any length of time. "In the end though I’m very happy with the results especially since all have been
adopted except for one" From Chocolate being found on the side of a busy road, to being adopted and renamed Chewy Bear, to portraits being taken of other Hua Hin street dogs looking for forever homes and finding them. Everything happens for a reason and it shows that we can all make a difference in our own special way no matter what the cause or how we go about it. If you would like more information on
the good work that Rescue Paws does or would like to adopt a dog, please email Jaco at jaco@rescue-paws.org or hanli@ rescue-paws.org.

MISS TIFFANY UNIVERSE 2016 It is events like Miss Tiffany Universe that bring positive support for on one of the most historically taboo concepts of identity, one which unfortunately continues to be frowned upon and looked at with superficial and derogatory mentality in many societies. Transgender people, though seemingly more and more accepted, continue to face challenges to be looked at as equally as everyone else, even in the most developed of societies. To our delight however, Thailand has been long known for moving away from these prejudices, at least at a social level, and events such as Miss Tiffany Universe are proof of such thing. Miss Tiffany Universe, which this year graced its 18th edition, is the world’s most famous transgender beauty pageant and is gaining inestimable prestige. The

event, held in Pattaya, drew over three dozen contestants and hundreds in the audience who were treated to who were treated to an inaugural magic show performed by Joe Labero, featuring cabaret performers and enticing tricks. A parade ensued, in which all the contestants strutted in their gowns before the panel of judges, who eventually would pick the best twelve to make the final rounds. After a round of cat walks in which the contestants dressed in swimsuits, the verdict was announced. The winner this year was Jiratchaya Sirimongkolnawin, known equally as “Mo, a twenty-two year-old design student who spoke of happiness as being able to work for what she loves, which amounts to being on the Miss Tiffany Universe stage. The victor took home 1.5 million baht worth
of prizes, including a car and several vouchers to high-end establishments. She will now progress to represent the nation in the Miss International Queen contest later this year. It is often said that beauty pageants are superficial and objectifying, being seen as events devoid of social awareness. While to an extent that may hold certain truth, Miss Tiffany Universe is undoubtedly an exception to the rule, providing an important stage for the transgender community to be treated as normally as everybody else and thus easing their integration into society.

Baan Phu Thara Development
G
rahame Beecham and Eakkarat Suppagarn are both well know figures in Hua Hin’s Real Estate scene. Eakkarat is the developer of the highly successful Smart House developments, building 8 separate developments in Hua Hin. Grahame Beecham was the sales manager for another highly successful Hua Hin developer for years before leaving 18 months ago to start his own property marketing firm called TCH where he oversaw the sales at Eakkarat’s Smart House Village Development. After much sales success, Eakkarat and Grahame have decided to partner together on a brand new development called Baan Phu Thara located near Black Mountain. HOT Magazine recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Grahame to discuss their new project. HM – How did you decide on the concept and designs for the Baan Phu

Thara development. GB – Quite simply by listening to buyers and to build a development around their preferences and not ours. I was always told when buying a house make a list of your top 10 priorities and if you find a property that ticks 7 of those boxes then seriously consider it and if you can tick 8 boxes then buy it. The problem for us is that everyone has different priorities but I believe that with this development and by listening to buyers we have created something special and I believe it will tick more boxes for more people. HM – Baan Phu Thara is one of the first developments to use solar power and to be ECO friendly. GB – This has to be the way forward worldwide and especially in Thailand with 365 days of sunshine and drought
issues. We all want to pay less for our utilities especially when retired and this is so easy to do with a little thought and a willingness to achieve this. Like most buyers coming to Thailand I have children and grandchildren and I believe it is our responsibility to start to make things change as to how we build properties for a better and sustainable future. HM – Does the cost of being an ECO development make the property sales price higher? GB – In the short term yes but not as much as most people think and in the long term buyers will make big savings, not just on the cost of electric and water but in resale values. I have spoken with many expats who live in Hua Hin, who love being here and the lifestyle it affords but wished that they had bought a higher standard property when they first moved
here but were drawn by lower prices and now realize that the resale value of these properties have suffered badly. If you buy well at the beginning you won’t live to regret it and it negates the need to sell and move to a higher standard of property in the future. HM – You seem to have included many extra features not seen in developments here in Hua Hin before. GB – Again we have tried to think from a buyer’s point of view, especially as our target market are people who like me are not getting any younger and all of us have to consider how our lifestyle will change as we get older. HM – How did your partnership with Khun Eakkarat Suppagarn come to be? GB – I met Eakkarat when my wife and I bought our first property in Thailand on his Smart House 2
development and we have remained friends ever since. My company TCH started to do the Sales & Marketing for the Thailand Property Award winning Smart House Valley development around 18 months ago and sales have been strong with only a few plots remaining for sale and so it was during this time that the idea of a partnership was formed.
time again. My strength is in sales and taking clients through the buying and building process from the first meeting to the handover of the property. Customer service and good communication is an essential part of this business and by both myself and Eakkarat working to our own personal strengths I feel that we can give buyers the highest level of confidence to purchase.
HM – What do you see as the main strengths of this partnership?
HM – You have launched this development early, even before the show-house has been completed why is that?
GB – Allowing people to do what they do best. Eakkarat is a well-established builder with a proven track record of honesty and professionalism, he has built 8 developments which is over 300 properties and he has the connections within the building industry, he knows how to run a building site and to complete properties that are built to a very high standard on time, time and
GB – For market awareness, I want people to know what we and this development is all about and not everybody wants to buy a property immediately. I hope that with the history of Eakkarat and myself that we can generate reservations for preferred plots even at this early stage and of course

any reservation fee would be totally refundable at this point.
HM – You are obviously very passionate about this development.
HM – How confident are you that the property market in Hua Hin will continue to grow?
GB – Very passionate, how can you sell something that you don’t believe in? Our goal is to build the best development in Hua Hin, to the highest standard of design, quality and finishing, with the lowest maintenance and running costs. We are asking people to pay us money to build them a home that in many instances will be for their retirement after many years of hard work, so we feel they deserve to have the best property that we can build for them and we are very aware that at the end of the day it is the potential buyer who will decide if we have achieved this or not.
GB – Vey confident as I honestly believe that Hua Hin is the best place for an expat to live in Thailand. I have also seen an enormous change in the quality of property being sold in Hua Hin over the last 5 years. The quality and finishing on more and more developments are to European standards and I believe that the standard of our development Baan Phu Thara will raise the standards for all developments in Hua Hin to follow, which can only be a good thing for the buyer and for property sales in Hua Hin in the future.

Plaza Athenee Bangkok
46
June 15 - July 15 , 2016
T
here are hotels that just provide you with a complete sense of utmost luxurious comfort. Urban abodes that would allow one to spend hours indoors without ever feeling the need to leave the premises. This month, HOT Magazine takes you to the Plaza Athénée, a Royal Méridien Hotel – A place that entirely fits the description above. Those of you who adore a life of full, as Frank Sinatra said, should definitely read on. The Plaza Athénée is located in the middle of centric Bangkok. It rarely gets as centric as this, at a three minute walk away from the Ploen Chit BTS station and an equal distance away from the Central Embassy shopping and leisure mall, the hotel is at an ideal walking distance from the most attractive spots in Sukhumvit – Something remarkably rare, considering that arriving to most places in Bangkok takes at the very least a short taxi ride of some sort. Bangkok’s Plaza Athénée recently completed an extensive remodel where it was modernised and sustainably repurposed. In designing the award winning new interior, the designers and architects paid special attention and tribute to its royal roots. The hotel is built on the site of Kandhavas, the royal palace of H.R.H. Princess Valaya Alongkorn, 43rd daughter of King Rama V and the new design reprises the Thai-Colonial style that the princess, herself a renowned aesthetic expert, inhabited in her lifetime.

Something remarkable about the Plaza Athénée is the marvellous range of rooms it accommodates. Ten different types of quarters grace this hotel. The standard rooms, known as the Athénée Rooms, are located between the seventh and the twenty third floor. Having been recently remodelled, the rooms bare colonial styled decorative traits. The room possesses a king bed, a sofa, a desk with an ergonomic chair, comfortable and commodious bathrooms with rain showers, complementary services and WiFi – known to be, and officially categorised as the best in Bangkok at a 100 Mbps bandwidth access. At the other end of matters, we have the most prominent of suites in the form of the Ratanakosin Suite, an absolutely stunning space of 350 square metres filled with everything anyone would require for a memorable stay. Ratanakosin recalls the ancient capital of the kingdom that went by the same name, and was attributed to this suite for the quantity of invaluable artefacts, Thai silks and original artworks displayed within it. A majestic living room adorned with an awe-inspiring chandelier and marvellous armchairs brings uncontested allure to the suite, along with the beautiful mahogany dining table and the enviously equipped contiguous kitchen. 48

All the complimentary services are of course included, such as butler service, access to the Club Lounge, Spa Fitness and daily breakfast buffet. One thing that never ceases to be maintained, regardless of the scale of luxury though, is the attention to detail and the caring service provided: the sign of a quality hotel. The Plaza Athénée is equally abundant in places to dine in all the superfluity imaginable. Fancy a taste of the land? Well then their restaurant Smooth Curry will always suit your palate with a fantastic display of Thai cuisine, ranging from all four regions of the country. Staying in Asia, Silk Road is then the place to go to, a fantastic Cantonese restaurant with beautiful Chinese culinary representations. Why not a mix of contemporary sushi dishes? Utage will bring you this and more, with a beautiful balance between the classic and the modern traits of Japan’s finest food. But if you’re craving continental, Reflexions restaurant will provide you everything you need – after all, it wouldn’t be a French hotel chain without a stunning
French restaurant! Creative, classic and contemporary dishes will grace the most sophisticated of palates, bringing to life all the sensations that gourmet cuisine so characteristically does. On Sunday’s, something spectacular takes place at Plaza Athenee, that being their Sunday Brunch, widely regarded by Bangkok locals as one of the very best in Krung Thep. Read more about this gastronomic delight on page 56. The Spa Athénée is the place to reinvigorate your body. Situated on the fifth floor, it is a majestic mix of French delight and Siamese care. With numerous treatments ranging from the four hour Immunetra Retreat, to the simple half an hour Deluxe Herbal Steam, the Spa Athénée offers an absolutely replenishing repertoire of options to fuse yourself with tranquillity and bliss. As great as the Plaza Athenee is as a holiday hotel due to its central location, it is also a great business hotel and a hotel to hold special events such as weddings and large parties. The hotel has over
5,600 square meters of spectacular meeting space. Plaza Athenee boasts 27 meeting rooms with its largest being over 1,000 square meters in size. From elaborate celebrations in their Crystal Hall to flawless festivities in their top floor Pimarn Siam Hall Ballroom, they can accommodate your every wish and do so on a daily basis. The Plaza Athénée is an absolutely beauteous hotel, inspiring awe and comfort, as well as a homely sensation that will want to keep you checked-in indefinitely. hailand certainly knows how to do large scale stage productions. Siam Niramit in Bangkok and Phuket each has over 100 performers per show with 500 costumes. Phuket Fantasea is a large Las Vegas style production that’s a little Cirque du Soleil, a little Barnum and Bailey and a little Burlesque side show all rolled into one that’s been delighting audiences since 1998. At a recently held press conference in Bangkok, SHOW DC Corp Ltd., developer and operator of SHOW DC, Thailand's first retail and entertainment mega-complex and CMO Public Co., Ltd., ASEAN's largest fully-integrated event organization company specializing in mixed media art and light & sound systems unveiled 'Himmapan Avatar – The Spectacular Walk-Through 4D Experience'. Mr. Chayaditt Hutanuwatra, Chairman of SHOW DC Corp Ltd., said, "SHOW DC is very happy to have joined a business partner like CMO in forming 'CMO SHOW Corp Ltd.' to create and produce Himmapan Avatar as an unprecedented Thai cultural spectacle. The two partners share a vision to make Thailand a centre for world-class performances or shows that offer a complete cultural and entertainment experience to further strengthen Thailand's economy and tourism."

Mr. Sermkhun Kunawong, Chief Executive Officer of CMO Public Co., Ltd., said, "On behalf of CMO SHOW Corp, we are committed to offering the latest in entertainment combining spectacular technology with outstanding Thai cultural identity in an unprecedented way while making an impact on Thailand's entertainment production. Behind the production of Himmapan Avatar is the highlyexperienced team that produced the spectacular 'The River of Kings' which attracted 100,000 spectators.'" Himmapan Avatar will be the first of its kind in Thailand and ASEAN with a 4-dimensional presentation of Thai culture through the imaginary tale of Himmapan Forest which promises to take the audience on a journey into fairyland. Himmapan Avatar is an important show designed to attract Thai and international visitors. Produced with an investment of 800 million baht, Himmapan Avatar will premiere in September of this year at its own Himmapan Avatar Theatre covering a vast area of 3 rai (5,000 square metre) on SHOW DC's 5th floor with seats for 750 spectators per show. There will be six 75-minute shows daily. SHOW DC mega-complex comes complete with a wide range of retail and entertainment offerings for visitors to shop and enjoy. SHOW DC is conveniently located in Bangkok's Chaturathit-Rama IX central business district near Si Rat Expressway Entrance/ Exit (Rama IX and Asoke), close to Makkasan Airport Rail Link Station, Petchaburi and Rama IX MRT Stations. What makes Himmapan Avatar outstanding is the use of Thailand and ASEAN's most elaborate cutting-edge technology to ensure a 'Spectacular WalkThrough 4D Experience'. The audience will not only enjoy a virtual experience; it will also be immersed in a journey inside the legendary Himmapan Forest. Adding to the exciting experience is the 4-dimensional holographic presentation of gods and creatures such as the God of Sun, God of Moon, God of Darkness and The Angel. Taken from Thai classical literature “Tri Bhumikatha, Himmapan Forest, is a sacred mythical kingdom that borders the human realm and Buddhist heaven. It is the land where the Himmapan creatures breathe. For more information, go to www.himmapanavatar.com or call 02-203-1888.

L et’s Go, Phetchaburi D iamonds are marvellous things. They’ve been called a woman’s best friend. They’ve been sought after and coveted as objects of the most priceless value. They symbolise wealth, status, beauty and longevity. As Shirley Bassey sang it, diamonds really are forever. This month’s hot getaway is beautiful, priceless, symbolic in all its essence and valued for its status just like this precious mineral. If you’re curious about how to connect a province to this beautiful prize, do read on. Phetchaburi breaks down in two words: “Phet” meaning “Diamond” in Thai language and “Buri” meaning “city” in Sanskrit. The attribution to this is because of the river Phet, which passes right by the capital of the province, which goes by the same name and gave its designation to the latter. The River Phet, which sees its source at the Kaeng Krachan National Park, is an icon of this province and leads to the Gulf of Thailand, where it disembogues at Baan Leam. But before going into further detail, it would be fitting to describe the history of this province. Phetchaburi began its date with history during the eleventh century, a period during which the region was ruled by the Khmers and saw the arrival of its first settlers. These settlements however, were at best ephemeral or passing points until it was transformed into a key logistical port linking Ayutthaya to the Andaman Sea. The Burmese were aware of the area’s strategic value and were quick to launch several invasion attempts, which were all repelled by the Thais. The area thus became a cultural symbol, with plenty of valuable ornamentation telling the story of its rich past. It gained additional prestige upon the strategic relocation of Siam’s capital from Ayutthaya to Bangkok, as it attracted the interest of King Rama IV, who made it his retreat destination for years to come. The hilltop palace that he frequented, which was completed at the summit of Phra Nakhon Khiri (known more commonly as Khao Wang, meaning “Hill with a Palace”) in 1860, is today part of the Thai National Museum and the surroundings were officially named to be a historical park in 1979.

Phetchaburi is situated in the southern stretch of Thailand, bordering the province of Ratchaburi in the north, the province of Samut Songkhram in the north east, the Gulf of Thailand in the east, the province of Prachuap Khiri Khan in the south and the Burmese region of Tanintharyi. With eight administrative divisions, the most popular three are Mueang Phetchaburi, Cha Am and Kaeng Krachan. The first is, as mentioned earlier, the capital of the province. It is famous for the river that gives it the name and by the originality of the desserts that are famously confectioned there, a type of custard made with Mung Beans, coconut milk and duck eggs that goes by the name of Khanom Mor Gaeng. An absolute delicacy and now available throughout the country, nobody forgets that its origins lie at the heart of this city. Cha Am is another favourite attraction in the province. A beautiful and marvellous little beach town, Cha Am is frequented by a large quantity of tourists throughout the year due to its easy accessibility from Bangkok through Phektasem Road and the quality along with the relative quietness of its sandy beach. High end resorts include the Sofitel, the Regent, Springfield and the Sheraton, all of which attract many tourists and locals alike, especially during the high season.
June 15 - July 15 , 2016
63
Cha Am is also a mere twenty minute car ride from the city of Hua Hin, which has a great array of hotels in which to stay. It is due to the proximity of Hua Hin too, that the Cha Am beaches are often undeservingly overlooked, but which at the same time delimits their greater quietness and tranquillity, a trait that the stretches of sand in Hua Hin often lack. The other district, which we briefly touched on earlier, is Kaeng Krachan. Kaeng Krachan’s status as a district is actually relatively young, gaining such denomination solely in 1988, and being granted the rights of a full district in 1993. The main attraction of this area, which is arguably also one of the main attractions of the province, is the Kaeng Krachan National Park.
64
June 15 - July 15 , 2016
The Kaeng Krachan National Park is a stunning artefact of nature. Combining all the beautiful scenery with the accessibility and conservation requirements throughout its 2,900 square kilometres, it is a place entirely worth spending a day or two exploring in its entirety. It is first of all, the source to two main rivers, the first as we mentioned gives its name to the province, and the second is the Pranburi River. The river is sectioned by a dam built in 1966, which creates a lake covering a stunning forty six square kilometres. Created in 1981, it was at the time the twenty eighth national park in Thailand and it was further enlarged in 1984 to include the boundary between the province of Prachuap Khiri Khan and that of Phetchaburi. The national park, which
has been included in the list of ASEAN Heritage Parks was equally proposed to UNESCO as a potential future world heritage site. The park possesses a large amalgamate of incredibly rich flora and fauna, including fifty seven types of mammals, four hundred species of birds and both tropical and sub-tropical plants and flowers.
If you are someone that enjoys temples and caves, Phetchaburi will definitely please you in that sense. Apart from the ancient Khao Wang royal palace, the Khao Loung Caves are marvellous in their own right: one of the country’s most remarkable cave shrines, it is accessed through a set of inclined stairs. While one descends, it is impossible not to be set in awe by the large collective of
stalactites that majestically cling onto the top of the cave. The centre is captivated by the figure of a Buddha, upon which shines an almost magical glow of light through the open aired façade whenever the sun shines down on it, as this refracts and illuminates the rest of the cave. The second cave possesses an imperious tree of three hundred years of age, which can be seen rising above, contorting and
twisting its roots as it glistens from the rays of light that shine through its thick foliage. Arriving to Phetchaburi is very easy, as it can be accessed through a short two hour car trip from Bangkok. If you enjoy the comfort of your own private car, trips can cost you from two thousand baht upwards if negotiated appropriately. Should you choose to be
more adventurous however, vans from a multitude of companies leave Victory Monument towards the province every half an hour throughout the week, making it is very convenient and flexible. Prices are a hundred and sixty baht, significantly less than the car or the taxi. The train however is also an option, costing as little as 34 baht – this of course has the inconvenience of being slower than the other methods of transport. At large, Phetchaburi is one of the most fascinating provinces in Thailand. Whether the objective is to explore the deep historical richness of the area or to discover the marvellous flora and fauna of Kaeng Krachan, the place will be short of neither. And of course, how could we forget the attractiveness of Cha Am’s fantastically quiet beaches? If you have yet to visit Phetchaburi due to any reason, you can be assured that it will be worth your time.

Anantara opens first padi-certified free diving centre in the Maldives
T
he Maldives attracts travelers from around the world with a visual spectacle unlike anywhere else on the globe. Above the waterline and beneath the waves, unbelievable worlds await exploration. Anantara opens the door to new encounters with a pioneering aquatic experience in a nation where the total area is 99.99% water. the island nation. A multitude of water sports from scuba diving to surfing and deep-sea fishing to sailing connect guests from all three resorts to the glistening lure of the Indian Ocean. Launching a country first, the free diving centre offers another dimension to ocean-based adventures on the islands. The less explored activity of free diving strips many restraints attached with traditional scuba diving. A truly liberating activity, it relies on the diver
to hold their breath, leaving them free to move unhindered through the translucent Maldivian waters. With no oxygen tank bubbles to distort vision, the vivid colouration of coral life glows brighter than ever. Devoid of heavy equipment, guests move at will alongside inquisitive fish, developing a sense of belonging. With every dive guests acquire the ability to stay below a little longer, discovering more on each descent. Free diving is entwined with the
cultural heritage of the islands in the Indian Ocean. Since ancient times locals have harvested sponges and clasped gleaming pearls from beneath the waves. Anantara’s professional free diving instructor, Mari Kagaya, reveals a peaceful, intrinsic underwater encounter. “The Maldives provide the pinnacle in free diving adventure,” she explains. “Escaping the trappings of scuba gear, our encounters with sea life are graceful, natural and deeply personal. Guests discover their own hidden depths, not
only of their body, but also the mind.” Every diver is made to feel at ease in the water with Mari, who is originally from Japan. Her warm and welcoming approach to teaching free diving has been mastered since 2002 when qualifying as a diving instructor in Honduras. Amidst the gentle lapping sounds of the ocean, the resorts’ guests are guided through the theory of free diving. With a new focus on breathing and reserving energy, all that’s left is to turn in the water and embark on a new
journey of self-discovery in the Indian Ocean. To reserve a stay and experience the pleasures of free diving first hand, travelers are invited to contact +960 664 4111 or reservations.maldives@anantara. com. For more information on Anantara’s Maldives resorts, visit anantara.com.

o you ever wonder why playgrounds are only made for children? Do you wish there were places in which you could immerse yourself and forget that you have grown up? the fun that would make an eight year old jealous. Bon Bon has been the new sensation in Bangkok for a few months now, and the vibe is really picking up at this exciting new venue. The upscale area of Thong Lo, moreover, the ritzy area of Seenspace could have potentially proven a difficult setting in which to make an upscale playground: too conservative and it
would have lost its purpose. Too wild and it could have lost panache. But Bon Bon lost neither, in what has become the perfect balance between your classy tavern with overflowing elegance and your most extravagant dreams of mischievousness, all amassed below this lightly gothic styled concept bar. A large bird cage hung at plain sight in which one may play at being a captive bird
in a carefree bar, is ideal for those who enjoy the spotlight. For those who enjoy other things though, the cage overlooks two glass made ping pong tables, on which one can play a variety of games depending on how imaginative one can get (not too imaginative though, this is after all, a classy bar.) A fantastic highlight however is the Ice Room. Yes, the Ice Room. A place in
which glassware is made of ice and the cocktails are expected to be consumed with a spoon – which is pretty much the kind of thing David Bowie would have found essential if he would have been commended to confection a cocktail – and which in turn, is incredibly funky. The food is just as fantastic, and fundamental as an accompanying complement to a good cocktail. Seriously
laden nachos can be accompanied by everybody’s favourite set of Mexican and South American tapas, from pulled pork tacos to Peruvian salmon ceviche. But we can never lose too much touch with Asia, thus dishes featuring kimchi are just as standard. Something equally as common is the ice cream found near the ping pong table in the enclosure outside, where you can accompany a game with your

favourite flavour – needless to mention of course, that this goes in a cup with champagne. Because Bon Bon doesn’t do ordinary, it does what it set out to do and breaks the schemas of all bars that have come before it. The difference between them is that some just did not dare to tip over the edge of playfulness and thus became commonplace. It will be hard to forget however that Bon Bon has emerged to tell people they’re younger than they thought. As a whole, Bon Bon is a marvellous establishment with plenty of entertainment, curious aspects in every sense of the word and a fantastic ambiance concentrated in one of Bangkok’s hottest spots. If you haven’t been to Bon Bon yet, don’t be afraid to go and play, chances are it will make your day. Bon Bon - Restaurant, Bar, Playground Seenspace, 25/11 Thong Lo 13 Bangkok, 02 185 2378

Searching for a home with it all?
74
June 15 - July 15 , 2016
F
or many house hunters looking for a home is more than just price, size and location. However, most home searches are set up that way. When it comes to the luxury home market, house hunters have other criteria in mind. What are some of the things that are on the home shopping checklist for buyers? Here’s a look.
A TECH SAVVY HOME According to Freshhome.com, people want homes that are keeping up with the pace of technology. Just like everyone wants the latest iPhone, buyers also want homes with the most current technology. For instance, the types of updates that are wowing buyers include a home audio system and/or climate control system that you can control from an app on your smartphone. Bottom line, having a technology that makes life easier and more enjoyable is a key real estate component.
A PLACE TO CHILL A wine cellar is often associated with high-end living and is considered a necessity for wine lovers and collectors. But what do new buyers want? They are looking for a modern wine cellar with a designer look, serving almost like an art display for your vino. The Telegraph in London reports that in London they’ve taken the opulence to another level and wine rooms are evolving to serve as a private tasting chamber for entertaining. Sounds like a fun party!
OUTDOOR KITCHENS & FIREPLACES Why have one kitchen when you can have two? It makes sense, especially in our gorgeous climate to entertain outside. Since most entertaining involves food, it’s perfectly logical that an outdoor kitchen would be in demand. Buyers appreciate a setup that includes a gas grill, sink, refrigerator and prep area. Some outdoor kitchens even include beer taps and pizza ovens.
LIFESTYLE LOVERS Hua Hin is Mecca for golf lovers with so many great courses in close proximity to Hua Hin’s center. Luxury home buyers flock to communities such as Palm Hills, Black Mountain and Springfield where it’s possible to have a luxury home on a golf course where you can enjoy the park like setting on a daily basis. Hua Hin is also a beach paradise offering gorgeous beach and ocean views with absolute beachfront properties always in high demand. So, there you have it, these are just a few of the additional characteristics that buyers will be considering when searching for a luxury home. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Russ Downing is Managing Director of HOT Hua Hin Property and has for the last 9 years headed up the Hua Hin judging team for the Thailand Property Awards, widely seen as the Academy Awards for the Thailand Property Sector. Russ’s articles have been translated and re-printed in a large popular Chinese magazine and he has had 3 of his luxury listings chosen for the Wall Street Journal’s “House of the Day” feature with near worldwide exposure in the WSJ’s U.S., European and Asian editions as well as online.
