In our January 2016 issue we featured selected chapters from a book written by Hua Hin resident John Chambers called “Misconceptions and Course Corrections, A Collection of Critical Essays for our Times.” After receiving great feedback from our readers we are pleased to be able to present a few more chapters from John’s Book. Turn to page 72 to read what John has to say about Karma, Humor and Honesty, Integrity and Ethics.

L et’s Meet Christian Wurm What is your full name and age? I’m Christian Wurm, 50 years old What is your current Job Position? General Manager of Hyatt Regency Hua Hin & THE BARAI How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? I have been here with my family for 2 weeks now after moving from Park Hyatt Chennai in India and previously Park Hyatt Sydney. This is actually our first visit to Hua Hin What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? I have heard so much about Hua Hin being one of the premier beach getaway and a popular destination in Asia Pacific for golfers with a very interesting history. I also notice that Tourism Authority of Thailand have been promoting Hua Hin strongly in the wellness market at the international stage. It is a great opportunity for me to work in this peaceful and beautiful destination. What do you like most about your profession? Being in the hotel business gives me the opportunities to meet with many people around the world with diverse backgrounds. Not just the guests but also the colleagues. So I get to learn about different cultures and explore new places throughout my career as I have been working in many different regions around the world. What do you like least about your profession? I would say the fact that I have to leave each city after a few years of living and knowing all the people. Even though I enjoy exploring different places around the world, but it can be difficult and sadden to depart and keep moving to new places every 3 to 4 years which is a nature of hoteliers. What do you like most about Hua Hin? Obviously, Hua Hin is a family-friendly destination with a lovely community. Another appealing aspect is the beautiful scenery with so many attractions and activities throughout the year. What is your favorite restaurant and why? As I have been in Hua Hin less than a month, I still need to discover more restaurants and local food in Hua Hin to find out which one is my favourite. 10
March 15 - April 15 , 2016
What do you like to do in your free time and why? I have been trying to pick up my golfing skill, as I am now living in this city with several world class golf courses. I also like to do some jogging along the beach and sometime I join the 10 km running events. Another thing that I enjoy is to bring my two daughters, Leah (10 years old) and Anya (6 years old) out for some outdoor activities, whenever I have the opportunity.
here. Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you? I started my career as a chef and work for several awarded restaurants including the “Alt Luxemburg”, which is one of Berlin’s selected one-star Michelin addresses. Culinary has always been one of my passions and even at home I love cooking on the weekends for family and friends.
What would you recommend to newcomers to do in Hua Hin and why?
What is the most outlandish thing you have ever done and why?
I would encourage the new-comers including myself to get to know the community as much as possible especially during the first few months in Hua Hin. This is because I believe that once we know the people and places, it would be much more fun to live and enjoy this beautiful city while working
During my years in the Middle East, I experienced a Helicopter landing on top of Dubai’s world famous Burj Al Arab, where I was working as Director of Rooms.

O
kay, picture this- you’re laying back with your feet up on a comfy lounge chair after a long day, the gentle breeze is ruffling your hair gently as you listen to the waves crashing, and you’re sipping on a glass of wine. You have a formal business dinner with a client in a couple of minutes but you’re not stressing out because you’re having the meeting there, at your favorite place to chill and unwind. It’s almost too good to be true, right? If you have been looking for a classy, sophisticated restaurant that has a down to earth vibe in Hua Hin, our Hot Magazine team has found one for you. Oceanside Beach Club and Restaurant is

definitely a place you need to check out. The restaurant has crisp all-white lounge style seating on one side, and dark wooden formal seating on the other. It stands right next to the beach, so the view of the horizon is the neverending sea. When we walked in the first thing I noticed was the lighting, little illuminated cubes of orange placed tastefully around the couches and chairs, giving off a relaxing sunset vibe that I immediately felt comfortable with. The music was chill, it wasn’t loud but it faintly hummed in the background adding to the mood of the place. As I observed colorful cocktails and exotic dishes being delivered to people
lounging on chairs, my eyes shifted to the cute little bar in the far end. It looked inviting, with a friendly looking bartender and an illuminated counter that was dimly lit from below with a subtle shade of warm orange. We were given complementary drinks right after we were seated, along with a basket of a variety of breads. They were warm and went perfectly with our chilled drinks, as we waited for the entrées that Chef Wittawat had personally chosen for us. The first dish we had was crispy aubergine. I was hesitant to try this at first because personally, I’m not eggplant’s number 1 fan but all it took was one bite to
change my mind. The outer shell had a crunchiness to it, but it was unexpectedly teamed up with a soft and smooth texture on the inside. Although originally a Turkish dish, Oceanside’s version of it has a twist because it is served with a spicy miso sauce and sprinkled with toasted Japanese seaweed and spring onions. I would recommend this to anyone, especially those veggie-haters, you will be delightfully surprised. Our second starter was the Five Spices Lamb Tenderloin. It was skillfully plated with little cubes of watermelon and buffalo cheese diced so precisely that we almost didn’t want to eat and destroy it. Slices of lamb were placed in the middle and
they had a delicious combination of different flavors that went well together, leaving a familiar trail of Thai zing in our tastebuds. Then came the main courses. The Teriyaki Glazed Tasmanian Salmon was beautifully presented on the plate; it came with salmon garnished very nicely on top of Japan’s well-known Yakisoba noodles. The salmon was cooked very well with my knife slicing through it perfectly, as if it were butter. The Teriyaki glaze was just the right amount too, and it didn’t overpower the flavor of the salmon. The second main course we had was something the Chef recommended, a steak dish originally
from France, Encrusted Beef Tournedos which came with potato wedges and thin baked cranberry chips. I was a little skeptical about trying this, since you probably already know that a good steak isn’t that easy to come by in Thailand. It was decorated attractively with a sauce on the side, and the flavors exploded in my mouth because it was a combination I’d never had before; traditional steak with a hint of Thai taste. Oceanside’s innovative take on steak impressed me and now I know what I am going to order as my main course when I go there again.

When they brought in the desserts, we couldn’t help but make some room in our tummies. Now if you’re an indecisive person like me, you’ll want to get the Ob Oon selection of mini pastries and petite fours, which comes with an assortment of little treats marching oh so perfectly in a straight line. My taste buds experienced a little bit of this and a little bit of that- it started off with the creaminess an éclair, moved on to a mini sugar rush with a bite of mini-macaroons that was balanced out with a tangy little lemon tart, and finally the richness of a fudge brownie that just melted inside the mouth. The last dish sent out of the kitchen was the most intriguing. The chocolate lava really did live up to its name, as if a small chocolate volcano actually erupted oozing out a delicious chocolate fudge. The moment I inserted my fork, I froze as I watched the lava slowly stream down the cake, and every bite I took, I took in pure ecstasy. The cake was soft, warm, and moist just as any good cake should be, and the scoop of chocolate chip ice cream on the side was a nice cool touch. It was the perfect way to end the evening looking at the gentle swishing waves, with a sweet taste lingering in our mouths and the last glass of wine we held in our hands before heading back home. THE AGED NEGRONI, THE BAMBOO BAR'S NEW SIGNATURE COCKTAIL One of Bangkok's most iconic bars is the Bamboo Bar located inside the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Since it first opened in the late 1940’s — when former French war correspondent Madame Germaine Krull became the hotel manager — the bar has played host to some of the world's most famous patrons. Ray Charles, Sean Connery, Louis Armstrong, Eartha Kitt, Eric
Clapton, Richard Clayderman, Roger Moore, Dionne Warwick, Duke Ellington, Marlon Brando, Noël Coward, Bryan Ferry, and Mick Jagger have toasted their friends there and a few have entertained the lucky guests who happened to be seated that night.
Negroni Party. The event was to launch the classical traditional Italian cocktail, the "Aged Negroni" as the signature cocktail of the Mandarin Oriental's famous Bamboo Bar. The evening featured live Jazz and passionate dance performances.
On February 29th, the Independent Wine & Spirit Company (Thailand) and the Bamboo Bar presented an "Aged
The original "Negroni" is an adaptation of the classic drink the Americano, a simple blend of Campari, Vermouth and soda. The story goes that the drink was invented in Florence in 1919 when Count Negroni asked for a slug of gin in his Americano, in place of the soda. From that beginning the aromatic and dangerously alcoholic Negroni was born. The drink has rarely been tampered with since the near century it was born. It's now a super modish choice in hipster pubs and enthusiastic cocktail bars, where whole Negroni menus are emerging, but the basic blueprint is the same, one part gin, one part Cinzano Vermouth rosso and one part Campari, garnished with an orange peel. What makes the "Aged Negroni" extra special is that it is aged in an oak barrel. Aged cocktails aren't new but they are seeing a revival. Mixologists put Negroni in a barrel and wait. The alcohol extracts colour and flavours from the wood over

time and the resulting cocktail is more than a sum of its parts. The cocktail picks up some of the flavours from the wood, the cocktail also oxidizes, creating some of the nutty flavours you might taste in the final cocktail; the wood also reacts with the cocktail, creating the sugars that give the drink its softness and help integrate the different elements. Mixologists taste a sample from the Negroni barrel every couple of weeks to check how rapidly the flavour is developing. When the Negroni tastes just right, they empty out the barrel and transfer the batch to a glass container to halt the aging process. To serve, the Aged Negroni is measured out with a jigger into a mixing glass and then simply stirred with ice and strained into a cocktail glass. The cocktail is then misted and garnished with an orange peel. Next time your near the Mandarin Oriental, pop into the Bamboo Bar for their signature "Aged Negroni", you never know who you'll run into. A daylong event which took place in the prestigious five star Banyan golf club from eleven o’clock onwards on the last Sunday of the month. simultaneously make their contribution to this good cause as well as to showcase their skills and clinch one of the many prizes that was up for contention. These included bottles of wine and caps, but nothing too lavish in order to priorities the funds towards the charity. There was a nice dinner set after the tournament ended, in which there were great moments - and to top it all off, a display of dazzling fireworks was set up which was a success, thoroughly enjoyed by all of the participants and providing a great spectacle to end the event. The sum raised was just over two hundred and forty thousand baht, just under seven thousand eight hundred
dollars. These will be used in order to provide amenities for the schools such as canteen tables and chairs, equipment for sports and physical education as well as a copy machine amongst other essentials. The golfers have all been invited to join the project leaders when the delivery takes place further on. The event for next year has been booked already and half of it has already been taken up with reservations. The event will take place on the twenty fifth of February and promises to be just as good if not better.

his past February, the most charitable and kind hearted of polo events was hosted for its seventh consecutive year in the city of Pattaya The Queen’s Cup Pink Polo Tournament graced this beach town in its fight against breast cancer again, for another edition of fantastic riding, beauty, competition, charity and full fledged enjoyment. The equestrian community of Thailand gathered again to participate in this enthralling contest, and it was without a doubt, a development worthy of this grand occasion. This tournament which has been held every year since 2009 has quickly become a hit amongst the playing elite not only because of the royal flare or because of the occasion for polo itself, but because of the fantastic cause towards which it works. Co-organised by the Chairman of the B. Grimm Group Harald Link, and the managing director of LGB Limited Nunthinee Tanner, it showcased a true spirit of support for the “Pink cause”. Everything was indeed surrounded in pink, from the participants, to the supporters and to the decoration. This is because the pink coloured ribbon stands as the symbolic sign for support against breast cancer. The event was held in the luxurious Thai Polo and Equestrian Club, a fantastic setting to hold such a themed event. One of the most memorable highlights was the round robin game that took place amongst three teams, namely the BMW Team, the Maple Leaf Team and the Thai Polo Team, joined by Princess Jeanette zu Fuerstenberg.
52
March 15 - April 15 , 2016
The chairman of the organising committee had words of encouragement and dedication for the initiative and stated that she had “been aware of the danger of breast cancer as one of the most serious causes of suffering for women nowadays”. She equally claimed to “have learned that there had been a large number of women out there who lack knowledge about the disease and the opportunities for treatment.” With the aim of bringing this awareness to many of such women, she concluded by asserting: “Now in its seventh year, the polo ladies’ tournament is a showcase of the prowess of women polo players who come together annually not only in a bid to display their skills but also to raise funds for the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer. The theme of pink has been chosen because that’s the colour that symbolizes the fight against breast cancer.” And prowess was indeed displayed with some fantastic play in the greenery of this marvellous ground, which was full of cheering families, friends and avid fans alike, all supporting the fantastic initiative. The proceeds of this even will be donated to the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer, which has dedicated itself to the ongoing and continuous battle against the disease for years. Thanks to the generous funding that it has received due to charitable events such as this one, it continues to work for the hopes and the dreams of many people who suffer from the illness. The seventh edition of the Pink Polo tournament was a fantastic initiative with a great turnout, if you missed it, we recommend that you attend the next one, all for a good cause!

Tip moved back to Bangkok a year ago after living in London for 20 years. The new venture aims to provide a friendly and relax atmosphere with simple but delicious dishes. The menus consists of a mixture of Western and traditional Thai food. On entering the restaurant. You will find a bright airly room with a hand-painted design on one wall. There's also a piano for anyone to play if they so wish. There're so many dishes on the menu but we will concentrate on this four prawn dishes. The first one is Tip's signature dish - Goong Ob Cheese ( Baked River Prawn with mozzarella cheese ) The prawn is boiled for 8 minutes before all the other ingredients are added. This include homemade whipping cream, fresh milk, wild mushrooms, baby tomatoes, lemon and mozzarella cheese. It's such a simply dish but absolutely delicious. - Pesto & Prawns Spaghetti The spaghetti is cooked al dente in texture. The dish combines homemade pesto sauce, Olive oil, fresh chillies, Parmesan cheese, fresh prawns and all spices. The dish looks wonderfully bright and colorful, has the most beautiful aroma, and tastes as good as it looks. - Goong Yang Paprika ( Grilled Prawns Paprika with Satay sauce ) The prawns are grilled for 5 minutes before the paprika power sauce is added. This is served with grilled tomatoes and our homemade satay sauce. The overall flavour is quite spicy and goes perfectly with one of the wide variety of cocktails available at Tip's Kitchen. - Gang Som It consists of fresh river prawns, mixed vegetables, chilli paste, tamarind sauce, shallots, fish sauce and fresh chilies. Every Thai person knows about Gang Som. Ask the Expert Tips that can make a big difference when selling your home By Russ Downing
58
March 15 - April 15 , 2016
W
hen you make the decision to sell your home, you are entering a crowded field. Not only from all the other private sellers but also from the many developers who are trying to sell their brand new homes. Buying a home “Off Plan” is very tempting in that the buyer can choose colors, tiles and make minor room modifications. The downside is the buyer has to weight 7 to 12 months to enjoy his new abode while it is being constructed. As a private seller, in addition to being able to move in quickly, you also have the advantage of WYSIWYG, “what you see is what you get” and that’s been an important factor to a lot of my clients over the years. They want to see exactly what their money is buying them, not what a developer tells them it will. However, it’s not all roses. I’ve walked into resale homes with clients that looked tired, worn & dated. I already knew what they were going to tell me when we walked out…. next! So, if you want your home to stand out you need to make it so. It needs to shine and the best place to start is with your exterior walls. Address peeling or chipping paint and bring your home into its fully glory. Pay attention to trim and rafters too, and inspect any rotten wood as that scares potential buyers and could certainly be a sign of a bigger issue like pests that you want to act on. Then, take time to clean up the windows and shutters. Dirt, debris, water residue; all of these elements accumulate and can leave a film on windows. Also, tending to small details like light fixtures, doorknobs, doorbells and welcome mats are all small things that pack a big punch. All it takes is replacing dim bulbs, scrubbing away dirt and perhaps replacing an old doormat with one that gives a welcoming first impression! Your yard and entertaining areas might also need some TLC. Clear away any dead leaves or branches, trim back overgrown plants, add flowering plants for color and your home will instantly be more inviting. Take a good look at your patio furniture. Highlight your outdoor living spaces by washing and replacing worn out pieces. If you have an outdoor kitchen and haven’t used it for a while, give it a good deep clean and make sure to troubleshoot any potential issues
so you don’t have any unexpected surprises when showing a potential buyer. It goes without saying that the inside of your home is just as important, if not more so, then your exterior when it comes to a potential buyer’s impressions. Give the nooks and crannies of your house the royal treatment. Your interior walls should be washed and the areas that are not cleaned everyday should be wiped, dusted, mopped and vacuumed. Get a fresh start and begin your purification spree at the top – top of cabinets blinds, shelves, ceiling fans, light fixtures, etc. Then you can work your way down and finish with the baseboards and flooring. Your kitchen and bathrooms are of utmost importance. Clearing clutter and wiping cabinets and drawers inside and out is a great place to start. Also, scrub grout and check for cracks so they can be sealed. Don’t forget the appliances, give them some extra attention attacking the grease and grime. L et’s Go, Koh Chang
I
slands in this area of the world are always a synonym of relaxation, exotic beauty, marvellous sights, enchanting coasts and cocktails with little parasol hats by the fine sandy beaches. Koh Chang is one of these islands and boasts with all of these and more vibrant features to make it so special. It is for this reason that this month at HOT Magazine, we take time to explore one of the most spectacular islands that Thailand has to offer. If you’re looking for a nice place in which
62

to spend a relaxing time in the next few months, do absolutely read on. Koh Chang is a district that is part of the Trat province and is located in the east of the country, in the gulf of Thailand. Being near the border with neighbouring Cambodia, it is the third largest island of Thailand after Phuket and Koh Samui and bears the fantastic typical climate that the country is so famous for: a flagrant sun and welcoming warm temperatures throughout the entire year. The heat is
hardly an issue as it can be in urbanised areas such as Bangkok, as the breeze from the sea does much to assure that there is always a feeling of freshness regardless of where one goes on the island. The rainy season is probably the only time that discourages visitors from the beaches, but even at such times the showers aren’t constant and the activities are plentiful enough for some not to require sunny weather. Koh Chang has an interesting etymological background. “Koh” as you
may well know, means “island” whilst “Chang” if you like your beer, might ring a bell too, as this is the Thai word for “elephant”. “Elephant Island” is thus what it is called, not because it brews the local Thai lager, but because of its shape, which if you bear notice, resembles the head and the trunk of an elephant. Koh Chang’s history is rather quite interesting too, as this is a place which was largely undiscovered right until the Second World War, during which time only a few families subsisted in the island,
by means of growing and harvesting coconuts as well as other assortments of fruits. During World War Two, Koh Chang came into the limelight. Far from the most flattering of reasons for fame, it was the frontline for the Battle of Koh Chang, in which the Siamese Navy would face off against the colonial French, in an alliance which comprised of Vichy France and of French Indochina. Such battle would resolve positively in favour of the French, who defeated Luang Phrom Viraphan’s men, the
commander of the navy back then. Two ships were sunken at the time with one resulting severely damaged. A month into the battle, the belligerents agreed on a peace agreement which ended the confrontation. The complete devastation of the island however, is what allowed for the government to focus on the renewed development projects there, which have culminated to make it one of the most beautiful territories of modern day Thailand.

Speaking of territory, it is befitting to focus on its wonderful landscapes: Koh Chang has an incredibly special figure it can boast of, in that it is covered in a seventy percent by untouched rainforest. It possesses and is well known for having remarkable coral reefs and waterfalls, which attract many people from all over Thailand, both nationals and foreigners. Within this beautiful gift of nature hails a rich density of flora and fauna, which gives life to the island. A few of those which inhabit the area are the Stump Tailed Macaque, the Small Asian Mongoose as well as the Small India Civet, which coexist within the lush greenery. Additionally, we find varieties of many avian species, sixty one have been recorded to date, a figure which is impressive, considering the relatively small landmass. Various types of snake
64
March 15 - April 15 , 2016
and deer are present there too, creating a truly heterogeneous environment in the forest. It was believed in the past that the Koh Chang Frog was a species endemic to this isolated landmass, but was then found in other areas of the country further towards the mainland. Most importantly however, one can find the symbolic creature of the Koh Chang elephant, as the large pachyderm, whilst not native to the island, seemed too representational not to have. Thus these are kept carefully, mostly for touristic purposes which we speak of later on. There are an array of things to do at Koh Chang, other than the ones we already mentioned. Koh Chang did not attract tourism until the middle of the nineteen seventies, during which time there were only a few back packers who
dared explore this largely local island. The island at that time was completely undeveloped for the purpose of receiving foreign visitors, as they made their way there with local fishing boats and stayed in the handful of small guest houses you could find. Today however we see thriving tourist industry, especially for its natural beauty. The primary attraction is without a question the Mu Ko Chang National Park, which in turn is a protected area, along with eighty five percent of the island. Within it lie various coral reefs to which both Thai and foreign tourists are attracted in equal measure. There are a number of waterfalls within Mu Ko Chang, such as the Klong Plu Waterfall which is the most known one in the area. There are also however waterfalls on the eastern side of the island, such as Klong Nongsi, Klong
Nuang, Khiri Petch or the Thanmayom. The village of Ban Salak Phet has a temple called Wat Salak Phet that was built during the reign of the King Rama V, and it now commemorates the visit of the late monarch in the form of a museum. As mentioned previously, elephants are used for touristic purposes and rides on them in Ban Kwan are popular amongst the visitors to the island. The busiest of the island’s beaches is Hat Sai Kao, which is equally the first beach that visitors encountered upon first exploring the island. Hat Sai Kao translates to “White Sand Beach”, and it most certainly is indeed, offering great spots to settle on amongst the sand. Truth is however, that most of Koh Chang’s beaches are white and sandy, so in the lookout for exclusivity, Klong Kloi can be a better alternative due to its relative deserted state right up until ten years ago. Today it enjoys amenities that allow for people to enjoy a relaxing time there, but is certainly not as crowded as Hat Sai Kao. If what you are looking for however is the night life, the ironically named Lonely Beach is the place to be, as affordable restaurants,
accommodation and other amenities are available in the vicinities, not to mention the nightly parties that are almost a daily occurrence during the high season. Getting to Koh Chang is relatively easy. Whilst the only means of access to the place is through boat, it is affordable and comfortable to travel there. Additionally, if one wishes to go there from provinces afar, Trat has an airport merely fifteen minutes away from where the ferries to the island depart. Usually, if one stays at a hotel, transportation services to and from the airport are made readily available by the hotel itself. In general, Koh Chang is a fantastic island that everyone must without a doubt visit. Far from noisy or overly crowded or populated like other islands out there and developed enough to ensure a pleasant stay, Koh Chang will be a destination that will make you want to stay for longer than you had initially planned. If you have not been there yet, it is very much worth a trip.

Misconceptions and Course Corrections
J
ohn Michael Chambers is a recent Hua Hin resident. He is an Author, Consultant, Public Speaker and Songwriter. If you were to run into John and asked him what he does, he’d tell you that he is an activist for humanity. Born and raised in New York, John has travelled and lived in many countries. He is a very perceptive individual who has often taken the road less traveled which
72
March 15 - April 15 , 2016
has proven to be a very diverse journey and pathway. John was a successful financial advisor with seven offices in the U.S. and a radio talk show host. He’s given speeches in more than six states, thirty cities and three countries. He has also written the music and lyrics to over fifty songs and enjoys playing his guitar. John’s written a book which is available on Amazon, it’s called “Misconceptions and Course Corrections,
A Collection of Critical Essays for our Times.” In our January 2016 issue we published several chapters of John’s book with great feedback from our readers. HOT Magazine is pleased to present a few more selected excerpts from John’s book “Misconceptions and Course Corrections, A Collection of Critical Essays for our Times.”
CHAPTER 10 - KARMA Karma’s origins trace back to India. It is a belief that all of your actions will have equal repercussions, affecting you at a future date, in this life or the next. It’s the force created by a person's actions that is believed in Hinduism and Buddhism to determine what that person's next life will be like. Karma is the action one takes; it is the cause in that of cause and effect; it is what you do. A more western way to sum this up is “what goes around comes around” or “whatever you do is going to come back on you,” so be mindful of your acts as you go through life. You hear this word Karma thrown around a lot here and there in every day chitter chatter. I believe in the concept of Karma, as do many around the world do. So I just wanted to briefly touch on this because it is so simple to turn your life around and direct to some extent, the type of future you will have. I see so many people throughout my travels from both the Eastern and Western world that are overly consumed with their 66 Misconceptions and Course Corrections problems and assign all blame and all cause to another, which, of course, is a mistake in and of itself. This actually further empowers the perceived person whom they are upset with. It is best not to live a reactive life but rather a proactive life. It’s really very simple: be kind and compassionate and do not engage in harmful acts. Clean hands make a happy life. Be honest and be productive. Serve a higher cause. Contribute positively in this life and to this world. Enrich yourself and the lives of others. Steer clear from greed, selfishness, anger, hate, jealousy, etc. Live a purposeful and meaningful life without causing harm to others. Expand, create, be joyful, prosperous, and take care of your body. You see it is my belief we have all been here before. Many of us will come back. But what we do today, here and now, will have an impact tomorrow and the tomorrows beyond that, so there is no better time for a course correction than now, wouldn’t you say?
After all “Instant karma’s gonna get you.” BE MINDFUL OF YOUR ACTS
CHAPTER 11 - HUMOR Laughter heals the soul When President Ronald Reagan (a Republican) was shot and being rushed into the emergency room, he was surrounded by a team of physicians. He
looked at the doctors and said, “Please tell me you’re all Republicans.” Some years back I saw the incredibly talented comedian, actor, and producer Jerry Lewis. He was performing at Ruth Eckerd Hall, a theater in Florida, and I had V.I.P. tickets. I got to chat with him and a photo taken with him at an after-concert meet and greet. It was a great night and a special moment to see him up close having grown up with this legend. Just before the photo was taken I imitated him and his voice and mannerisms from back in the old days when he worked with Dean Martin by mocking Jerry’s voice and saying, “Hey Dean, hey Dean, hey Dean.” Now for the younger readers of this book this may not make a whole lot of sense, but for those people born say around 1960 or so, you folks may get a chuckle out of that; Jerry certainly did! Jerry pointed at me and laughed and then the photos were taken. It was a fun moment for me, having a few minutes with a comedic legend. I strongly recommend a documentary called “Method to the Madness” on Jerry’s life. The insights to his career in this film are eye-opening and inspiring. A great view for any Jerry fan or for anyone who wants to learn about the life and career of this incredibly gifted and talented man. So why am I reflecting on comedy? Because it makes us laugh. Why is laughter important? Well, if the goal of life is to be happy, it’s safe to assume that when we are laughing that we must be happy. At least, in that moment, situational happiness is better than none at all, right? So I feel that good comedy is a gift and sort of a blessing as its end result is instant happiness, situational as it may be, it is in fact a moment and state of happiness; kiss a comedian today! Jerry had a Q&A with the audience and one person asked him what the secret was to his longevity. I mean, he was in his mideighties, had some serious health challenges along the way, yet he was on a U.S. tour performing two hour shows, singing, playing instruments, and entertaining us with stories and comedy. Jerry’s response to the question of the secret for living a long life was simply, “Laughter. Comedy.” There is much to be learned from this, and who doesn’t like to laugh? You can probably think of many comedians, be they stand-up comedians or comedic actors or both. Names such as the late, great Robin Williams, Jim Carrey, Tina Fey, Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, Eddie Murphy, or someone from yesteryear like the late, great Johnny Carson, George Carlin, Chevy Chase, Woody Allen, Carol Burnett.
March 15 - April 15 , 2016
73
Richard Pryor, Billy Crystal and so many others. Then there are of course the Three Stooges, the Marx Brothers, Ralph Kramden (Jackie Gleason), and the Honeymooners, Abbot and Costello, Lucille Ball, Charlie Chaplain, and on and on. Comedy is crucial because it strikes an emotional chord, which incites laughter, and laughter is good for the soul. Look at the innocence of an infant or very young child. The giggling laughter will light up a room full of adults and have the adults acting all “goo-goo-gaga” and putting smiles on their faces too. Cartoons based upon laughter often entertain children. Even tragedies can be lightened up with comedy. Humor can act as an instantaneous solvent of discord. Someone once said that comedy could also be defined as “tragedy plus time.” Well, you will find examples of this if you look for it. After time has elapsed, a delicate and brilliant comedian would find a way to enter humor into tragic events; it can be solemn but takes the edge off of things a bit. Laughter heals the spirit. This is why in eulogies someone will always tell a story that will make people laugh to ease the friction, pain, and suffering. Then there is my Uncle Mike, my father’s brother, my Godfather, the Best Man in my wedding. Let me say right here and now how much I love and admire my Uncle Mike. Now, my Uncle Mike, he is not a comedian (not by trade) but he just has a natural gift. This man has had everyone around him in hysterics his entire life. It's no wonder he is loved by so many as he has made so many feel so good. He is truly gifted. You should know that Uncle Mike, over perhaps a ten-year period, when he was around 40 years old, had multiple heart attacks and multiple bypasses. He even successfully underwent a heart transplant I'm going to say probably over 20 years ago! And like Corrections Jerry Lewis, he is now in his eighties and still with us here today putting the nurses, aides, and administrators into hysterics at the assisted living where he resides on L.I., N.Y. Now, a funny footnote: after he had the heart transplant, he very seriously confronted my mother and very softly said, “Rose, there is something I need to get off my chest. There is something you need to know about me. She was listening, of course, very intently. I mean after all we had almost just lost him due to the heart failure. And he said, “Rose, deep inside of me there is a woman. There is a woman inside me.” Now this was insinuating that he was gay and “coming out.” However, the punch line, if you will, was that he was given the heart of a young woman
74
March 15 - April 15 , 2016
while undergoing the heart transplant. Humor: tragedy plus time. Laughter is exhilarating. It is an endorphin rush, even bringing one to tears of laughter. You will often hear people saying that they “have not laughed that hard in years.” How wonderful to laugh. It is like a gift, a release, and a relief. Like I mentioned earlier on in this book that music and film are so powerful, as are all of the arts because it reaches us on many emotional and intellectual levels and has a profound impact on our feeling world, and a good comic artist really makes an impact. So how about a random act of kindness? Give an artist a hug and thank him or her. It’s also good Karma. So be sure you see quality comedies that make you laugh, old and new. Enjoy the company of someone with a good sense of humor. It really makes a difference. Just have a good laugh! GO AHEAD AND JUST HAVE A GOOD LAUGH!
CHAPTER 12 - HONESTY, INTEGRITY & ETHICS A code of honor… We are spirits in the material world and thus, as humans, we are imperfect. One way to reduce, or keep in check if you will, our imperfections and transgressions against self and others is by understanding honesty, integrity, and ethics. I think honesty, integrity, and ethics sort of go hand-in-hand. We have all been dishonest to a greater or lesser extent; it is a fact that people lie. The consequences of telling lies far outweigh the consequences of telling the truth. Words are a foreshadowing of either truths or lies yet to be seen; action is a tell all. So this, of course, is a personal matter and a very important one at that. Stop, slow down, and take a moment and look into this as it regards you and how you operate. When you are truly aware and in-tune with yourself, you realize that when you are not honest with yourself you are constantly knowingly or unknowingly beating yourself up so to speak. You are destroying your confidence and morale and this becomes a viscous trap and is often unknown modus operandi to a greater or lesser extent - a blind spot.
I have personally violated my own code of honor, ethics, and integrity before. Like all of us, I have not always been an honest person, and we can change this about ourselves. I believe we all must look into these three words: honesty, integrity and ethics and once again, beginning with the man/woman in the mirror, strive to raise our level of honesty and adhere to our own personal code of honor. The key is to be aware when we are not, then simply spot it, correct it, and strive to live an honest, moral, and ethical life. Without this, there can be no happiness. In the absence of this we shall see a continuing and deteriorating culture of darkness, and a society and world on a path towards self-destruction. So in the spirit of love and light, I declare that we are the embodiment of the great oneness and power of this universe. We not only survive, but we thrive and we are creating our way out from the darkness and into the light. •
Honesty, a definition: Honesty refers to a facet of moral character and connotes positive and virtuous attributes such as integrity, truthfulness, and straightforwardness, including straightforwardness of conduct, along with the absence of lying, cheating, theft, etc. Furthermore, honesty means being trustworthy, loyal, fair, and sincere.
•
Ethics, a definition: The principles of conduct governing an individual or a group, a guiding philosophy. The discipline dealing with what is good and bad and with moral duty and obligation. A set of moral principles. A system of moral values. A consciousness of moral importance.
•
Integrity, a definition: The quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness. Integrity is a personal choice, an uncompromising and predictably consistent commitment to honor moral, ethical, spiritual and artistic values and principles. In ethics, integrity is regarded by many people as the honesty and truthfulness or accuracy of one's actions.

L et’s Check In,
Jatujak Green
T
his month, the HOT Magazine team reviews one of the most exciting markets in Bangkok, sure to excite everyone and anyone who visits. Located in a smaller enclosure of the entire gargantuan Chatuchak Market, it is a fantastic way of spending a good weekend’s evening with friends, family or even by just casually strolling along nonchalantly on your own. You read it right, The Green Market opens at night, and is designed with a fantastic little mix between permanent installation and temporary stalls designed to give the entire place a more casual outlook.
76
March 15 - April 15 , 2016
Riddled with a variety of balance between food and accessories, the Green Market can have you staring over a large cloth on the ground covered with bargain watches, shoes or belts, just like it can have you wondering across more formal shops with their cute interior designing and modernistic style. Quarter flea market, quarter modernist boutique, half food and drinks venue and full excitement centre, the Green Market certainly is a cocktail of diversified themes that appeal to a vast array of individuals from different social classes and different places. Thais and foreign
visitors alike all relish their time in this place, which is why it is always full of an assorted gamma of curious onlookers and passers-by. The Green Market is best to be strolled between Thursday and Sunday from five o’clock in the evening until midnight (or even past that if you find one of the bars that makes it into the little hours of the morning). Plenty of terraces await you there, filled with a booming ambience of happy go lucky people ready to enjoy a good night out of both shopping, eating and last but not least, drinking. Beer
HOT MAGAZINE RECOMMEND towers and groups taking a break from the stress of the work days are common within the place, accentuated with the various kinds of music that is played to ease the desired vibe into people. In the shopping front, there are many items that one can find in this market, especially clothes and vintage accessories such as real and genuine vintage vinyl discs, antiques, art of different types, collectables and old furniture amongst others. The Green Market is in and of itself very affordable, but of course, as is tradition in the Land of Smiles, one can
use a grin or two to symbolically bargain the price off what are already cheap accessories and clothes. Getting to the Green Market is very easy, on simply mounts the BTS from any station in the Sukhumvit network and makes their way all the way to the last northernmost station of Mo Chit. From there it’s a small walk up the Kamphaeng Phet Road. One can equally get the underground MRT metro, from which you should get off a station shy of the last northern end station, in Chatuchak. The walk from there is equally as short.
Alternatively you can always choose to travel in an easier more personal way with a taxi. Literally everyone knows the JJ Market so you will not have to strain yourself attempting to explain the taxi driver where you’re going – Just make sure you find the JJ Green Market, not its much bigger counterpart. Have you not been to the Green Market yet? Then you’re definitely missing out.
