Dear Reader Welcome to Issue 5 Volume 4. This month we take you to the fabulous new Hua Hin Marriott Resort & Spa. With 322 rooms and built at a cost of 3.4 billion baht, it is a showcase property by any measure. We start off this issue by taking you to the Marriott’s beachfront restaurant called Big Fish. Big Fish is the only absolute beachfront restaurant that is fully air conditioned. You’ll love the food while enjoying beach and ocean views, with none of the heat. See for yourself on page 14. Next up is one of Hua Hin’s favorite yearly events, the Asian Beach Polo Championship. Always held in front of the InterContinental, this event is not only popular with Hua Hin residents but also the Bangkok rich and famous. This year’s Championship was memorable for more than just polo, find out why and check out all the pictures on page 34 Next we’re back at the Marriott to give you a picture tour of this beautiful property. Walking into it from the street side lobby is like stepping into Khao Yai, greenery abounds. It’s very spacious yet filled with amenities for their guests. There are plenty of pools including one just for adults. Come with us on a tour, page 44. A study out of the Netherlands has concluded that Sailors make better lovers. If love is what you are looking for you should have been in Pattaya from April 30th to May 4th when over 700 sailors gathered for the 12th annual Top of the Gulf Regatta. Over 271 boats participated, split over 10 classes. Pipe yourself aboard on page 52. Our monthly Let’s Go feature takes us to Korat. Known as one of the “Big 4 of Isan” it once marked the boundary between Lao and Siamese territory and is now considered a gateway to the Lao speaking Northeast. Come tour this historical area with us on page 60. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month’s issue. As always, thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

"Follow Your Dreams" A conversation with former Miss Thailand Universe, Charm O. Thomas HOT: Khun Charm, you are a former Miss Thailand Universe and represented Thailand in the 2006 Miss Universe Contest which was televised internationally from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. At what age did you decide you wanted to enter a beauty contest and can you tell us about some of the contests you entered which culminated with the Miss Universe contest? Charm: I’ve been watching the Miss Universe Pageant ever since I could remember. At the age of four, I dreamed that one day, I would represent Thailand to the best of my ability on the Miss Universe stage. This pageant is like a legacy; and just to be a part of it is such an honor. Before the Miss Thailand Universe Pageant in 2006, I never competed in any other pageant. My dream was to represent my country at the Miss Universe Pageant, and winning Miss Thailand Universe was the only stepping stone to get there. I devoted my heart and soul in to training; and thus, had no fear in the competition. HOT: At the Miss Universe Pageant, you made it to the Semifinals, the first Thai woman in 18 years to do so. What was going through your mind as your name was announced? Charm: I represented Thailand the very best way I knew how. I devoted my heart and soul into the competition and made it to the semi-finals. I will never forget the feeling of being on stage wearing the “THAILAND” sash, whilst seeing the Thai flag being waived by the Thai people in the audience who came to cheer for me. To tell you the truth, I was heartbroken that I didn’t make it further. Because at that time, I was taught to believe that if you didn’t hope for the best, then don’t enter the competition. It was different from the Miss Thailand Universe pageant because I wasn’t competing in my honor, or my family’s honor—but I was competing for Thailand. Les Brown once said, “Shoot at the moon, because if you don’t make it there, you’ll land among the stars.” And that is what I did. I landed in the semi-finals—I landed among the stars. 6

HOT: Since Miss Universe you’ve gone on to modeling and acting on TV and in movies. Between modeling and acting, which gives you the most satisfaction and why? Charm: I love acting. I never found out until I had the chance to become an actress. Now acting is one of my favorite activities in the world. I think the luckiest people are those who have a job they love… and I’m one of them. Taking on different roles over the past ten years of being a Thai actress has given me the chance to learn so many new things, such as shooting, singing (Thai country music and traditional “ligae” music), ballroom dancing, archery, and Thai sword fighting. I have taken on the roles of being a teenager with superpowers, a doctor, a nurse who had to save patients on a helicopter in a warzone, a warrior from 700 years ago, and so much more. I love discovering the character I’m playing through my own experience. I see acting as a means of escape from the real world. HOT: At the end of 2015 you were married to a former classmate whom you met when you were both attending the International School Bangkok. How has marriage effected your professional career and what are your plans for the future? Charm: James and I met in sixth grade at the International School Bangkok, and reconnected ten years after high school graduation. We never expected to find everything we both have been looking for to be in someone we have known for almost twenty years. The first part of the relationship was quite difficult because of the distance, but since James is in the renewable energy industry in Australia, he was able to expand his business in to the Thai market and move to Thailand. Since I was eighteen, I have spent most of my time working in the media industry, but now, I’m learning more and more each day about solar power and the renewable energy industry from James.

In school, James was known to be one of the best athletes, and I find it impressive to see how he has kept a strict routine over the years. He’s still as fit as he was ten years ago! So the biggest change in my life after marriage is that James is encouraging me to stay healthy, and exercise on a daily basis. I have looked in to health products and supplements, and so in May 2016, I will be launching my own dietary supplement product to help me maintain a healthy figure. The product is called CHARMS, and James has been a big inspiration in having me begin this project. In the meantime, James will be planning to launch his whey protein product very soon as well. HOT: What would you tell young women who also aspire to be a beauty queen, model or actress? Charm: First of all, I'd say that if you have a dream, go for it - because a dream will never become reality if it isn't sought after. For people who would like to enter the media industry, my advice is for them to never change themselves in order to please others. Every media talent is unique and irreplaceable to one another. Having a presence in the entertainment industry has made me a stronger person. Sometimes people's comments can be cruel and untrue. I learned to have faith in myself and to always believe that, "if it doesn't kill you; it only makes you stronger. HOT: Thank you Khun Charm for taking the time to speak with us.

L et’s Meet, James Mc Manaman
What is your full name and age? My name is James Mc Manaman and while I am happy to share my age, you will have to work for it… Start with the square root of one gross, then quadruple it, next toss in a baker’s dozen and then reduce that number by ½ of a decade – that’s my age. What is your current Job Position? I have the most exciting job in Hua Hin right now as the Club Manager of MahaSamutr Country Club on Soi 112. How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? This is my second time working in amazing Thailand. I spent 5 years in the Kingdom in the 1990’s where I was the opening General Manager of the Capital Club Bangkok and Poppies Seaside Cottages on Koh Samui, and I had made a few visits to Hua Hin during that time. Most recently I arrived back in Thailand in late 2014. What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? That Hua Hin was the summer residence of the Thai Royal Family, was on the beach, and “halfway” between Bangkok and Koh Samui. What do you like most about your profession? The favorite part of my job, is leading the MahaSamutr team and exposing to so many people this luxury, world-

class private club project. Exceeding expectations even now before we are open, makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck – and that’s what excites me the most. What do you like least about your profession? At the moment, my office is located in Villa #1, and my daily view is of MahaSamutr’s crystal lagoon. The water is a dynamic turquoise and it ripples with the wind. My least favorite thing is going home at the end of the day. What do you like most about Hua Hin? I feel as though Hua Hin has welcomed me with open arms. The Thais and the international residents here are some of the best parts of this town, and meeting new people from all walks of life is what I like most about Hua Hin.
brunch at one of our many wonderful resorts. What would you recommend to newcomers to do in Hua Hin and why? Learn a little of the Thai language, and search out the hole-in-the-wall places – there are so many wonderful people with great small business to discover. Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you? I’ve got the music in me… My father played drums with Nat King Cole, and I was a singing waiter through high school and college. In fact, I’ve opened two restaurants with singing waiters, and my personal favorite song to perform is “Don’t Bring Lulu”.
What is your favorite restaurant and why?
What is the most outlandish thing you have ever done and why?
My single most favorite restaurant in Hua Hin is impossible to pick! You will find me most frequently at Andreas, Bliss, Carlo, Daily Bread, Let’s Sea, Nai Lert Park, Olive, Mozza Mia, Sang Thai Seafood and Wilaiwan
The day before I was leaving Sun City, South Africa, and moving to Bangkok, I secretly chartered a private plane to take my partner on a surprise safari at a private game reserve. As we started our decent, we could see a jeep going back and forth along the dirt runway shooing the animals out of the way of the plane. After a private tour of the reserve and a delicious meal, we witnessed one of the most amazing sunsets before returning to reality.
What do you like to do in your free time and why? I love discovering new places in Hua Hin and the region. Things like taking a fishing boat around the Sam Roi Yot area in Pranburi, or trying a new seaside

hat I immediately liked when I entered the Hua Hin Marriott’s beachfront Big Fish Restaurant is that it was air-conditioned. That may sound funny, but it is the only absolute beachfront restaurant in Hua Hin that is fully air-conditioned. They have floor to ceiling windows that look right out onto the beach and ocean beyond, it’s a gorgeous view! At the other end of the restaurant is their open kitchen where you can see all of the fresh dishes being prepared. Big Fish is a casual restaurant that is open for lunch and dinner. Their lunch menu and features pizza, burgers and lighter fare. One of their signature dishes is their “Asia Chicken Burger” which consists of Minced chicken with lime leaf, ginger, garlic and lemongrass served with a spicy dip and is the personal favorite of Goetz Bauer, the Marriott’s General Manager. We visited during the dinner hour as daylight transitioned to darkness, the view from the beach restaurant was stunning. First things first, cocktails were in order. We ordered the top two off of their signature cocktail menu which were there “Blue Lotus” and their “Lumduan Swizzle.”. Their Blue Lotus had subtle flavors of Beefeater gin, lychee and freshly squeezed lime which is shaken with fiery homemade ginger syrup and blue curacao then topped with manoa soda. Their Lumduan Swizzle was made with Absolut Mandarin Vodka, freshly squeezed lime and sweet Thai basil, swizzled with crushed ice and then topped with a dash of tonic water, served long and capped with crushed ice and a Campari float. Both were light and extremely refreshing. Pure genius, their mixologist is to be commended. We started our dining experience with their Big Fish Iced Seafood Tower which was beautifully presented and included Rock Lobster, scallops, mussels, salmon tartar, oysters and prawns served with lemon wedges, tabasco, spicy seafood sauce, cocktail sauce, aioli & fresh roasted bread. The seafood Tower serves two but could easily be a spectacular meal in itself. Next came their “Spicy Green Pea Soup with Foie Gras Croutons,” which was served inside a young coconut. Delightfully smooth with a little bit of a spicy kick to it and stylishly presented in the coconut, it was a nice touch. The Big Fish restaurant prides itself on its fresh seafood and our next dish, the “Whole Local Seabass” couldn’t have been any fresher. It came wrapped in a banana leaf and spiced with lime, chili, shallots and coriander. I’m not normally

a fish fan but this fish was moist and full of flavor. The next dish was a big hit, their “Ultimate Australian Wagyu Short Rib,” which is braised for 15 hours and is accompanied with purple potato cake, baby carrots and a tonka bean sauce. The wagyu beef just melted in your mouth, full of flavor and so tender. It’s also a big portion which was fully consumed. Hard to believe after a feast like this that I still had to have desert, but I’m a sweets person, what can I say? As full as I was, I had to try their “Mango crème brulee,” which was accompanied with sweet fresh mango and homemade sticky rice ice cream. What a flavorful combination! I’ve had cravings for that desert ever since. Other menu items that jumped out at 16

menu offers 22 different wines by the glass and a large selection of bottled wines from France, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Portugal, Spain, South Africa & Germany.
The Big Fish menu was created by the Marriott’s Executive Chef, Mario Hofmann. Mario previously worked as the Head Chef Banquet/Catering at Hotel Adlon Kempinski in Berlin. Located near the Brandenburg Gate, Mario prepared meals for World Leaders on an almost weekly basis. His favorite Big Fish dishes are the Seabass in Banana Leaf and the Braised Wagyu Short Rib. Mario says they will soon start working on a new menu to bring the Big Fish to the “Next Level”.
In my humble opinion, the Big Fish Restaurant has it all; fantastic high quality food, a deep and imaginative bar menu, a to-die-for view and all amplified by their courteous and professional wait staff.
The Bar Menu at Big Fish is one of the most extensive I’ve seen, covering Beers, Spirits, Cocktails and Wines. Their wine

TENNIS FOR LIFE HUA HIN Tennis has taught me so many life lessons and has provided me so many opportunities. I will always be thankful to my parents and brothers for showing me the sport. Since i tried tennis at age of 3, it became my passion. There are many reasons to recommend you to start playing tennis. Here are my top 5. 1- Tennis is fun! No matter your age. People love playing! You will get to meet great people that could become friends for life. Some of my best childhood memories come from when i was playing junior tournaments and meet my best friends at the club. 2-Tennis teaches you life lessons. You have to learn how to compete, deal with adversity, learn from mistakes, being perseverant, discipline, learning from losing, teamwork, and many other skills that will help you off court. 3-Tennis is a great workout. During a tennis match/practice you will not only burn calories, but will exercise your legs, core, upper body and mind. It is also a great stress releaser and will help you turning off your thoughts. 4- Tennis is diverse- people from all ages, skills, backgrounds could learn the sport and play together. As Nelson Mandela once said"Sport has the power to unite the world in a way little less does..." You could play singles, doubles, mixed doubles and also in many surfaces (Hard court, Clay court, Grass Court, Artificial Grass, Indoors) this makes it very interesting. 5-Tennis is practical- in comparison to other fun sports, you do not need to alot of people to play. You only need one more
person and you could have a singles match. A great tennis partner is a wall! If you live next door from me, do not do it. If you are ready to start your tennis experiences or your child's, please visit us at True Arena Hua Hin. It will be our pleasure to guide you in the right learning path. We offer a variety of programs including private and group lessons, children classes, summer camps, high performance training, corporate events, tournaments and monthly events. ua Hin has been known as the “Royal Resort Beach Town” ever since King Rama Vl and Vl built their palaces here. Up until recently, King Rama Vll’s palace, named “Klai Kangwon” was the primary residence of Thailand’s current King, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. So, it was only fitting that Polo, also

known as the “Sport of Kings,” should be played in Hua Hin, as it was on Saturday April 30th when the 7th Annual Asian Beach Polo championship took place. Always played on the beach in front of the InterContinental Resort, this extremely popular yearly event is the only Polo championship played on sand in Asia.
Teams from Thailand, England, Singapore and Belguim came together to compete, have fun and raise money for HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha's Nabha Foundation. This year’s event was organized by His Excellency Mr. Suwat Liptapanlop, Former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, Mr. Harald Link, Chairman
of B.Grimm Group and the President of the Thailand Equestrian Federation and Miss Proudputh Liptapanlop, Executive Director of Proud Real Estate Co., Ltd, the main sponsor. The festivities began at 1pm with guest registration, food, drinks and lots of socializing. As last year, a large tented area was set up adjacent to the pitch with plenty of chairs and tables for comfortable viewing along with the

The day was nonstop action with kid’s polo, a fashion show on horseback, which saw leading Thai celebrities wearing luxurious brands from Burberry, The Met and Chindapa, and horseracing. But, it was the main event, the final Championship Polo match that had everyone’s riveted attention with Thailand pitted against Singapore. Led by team captain Luciano Tattoni, Thailand put on a strong showing in the three Chukkers that made up the match but in the end it was Ronnie Lim and his Singaporean teammates who garnered the trophy with a score of 5 to 2. But the big surprise wasn’t who won the Championship, it was the freak storm that rolled thru Hua Hin just before the start of the outdoor cocktail dinner party. Hua Hin had seen dry, sunny blue sky weather for months but that night a torrential downpour rolled thru Hua Hin along with a giant windstorm that knocked out power from Palm Hills in the north to Kho Takiab in the South. To the credit of the InterContinental’s professional staff, everything was quickly moved inside their new Ballroom and the party took place indoors under generator power. Although a different type of fun, it was still a great night with those in attendance feeling worse for the hotel staff than themselves as to how the evening turned out. The show went on with performances by singers and professional actors elaborately staged in the Dream Catcher theme. An auction of several paintings took place and all monies raised went to the Nabha Foundation under the initiative of HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha. The foundation was established on the belief that all people should have the opportunity to choose how they live even if they could not choose how they were born. Upon that belief they initially focus on giving a chance to current and former inmates to start a new life. At Nabha they provide effective integrated learning and training courses to inmates, giving them skills to manufacture high quality products which are sold under the supervision of Nabha. In doing so they believe that inmates will regain their confidence as well as giving them the potential to earn a living. Moreover, they tirelessly work to ensure that people in need deserve a chance to prove themselves without any prejudice. The original idea for the Asian Beach Polo Championship in Hua Hin came from Khun Suwat, Harald Link and Khun Nunthinee Tanner, Thailand’s first female polo player, and it is these three we have to thank for a very fun day and evening each year in April.

T
he Marriott chain began with just two motels in the 1950s. The first opened as a Quality Inn airport motel near Washington D.C. and another motel nearby, the Twin Bridges, a few years later. With the opening of the second motel, Marriott was born as a brand name. In 1967, Marriott opened its first resort hotel, Camelback Inn, in Arizona, USA. Marriott Hotels & Resorts expanded outside of the United States for the first time in 1969 with the opening of the Marriott in Acapulco, Mexico. One of the very newest Marriot Resort Hotels opened in Hua Hin just a few months ago located near Hua Hin’s center. The 322 room Hua Hin Marriott Resort & Spa was built at a cost of 3.4 billion Thai Baht. A tremendous amount when you consider the soon to be opened Marriott Queen’s Park Sukhumvit hotel will have over 1,000 rooms and will cost 3.8 billion baht. When you step into the resort from the street side lobby it becomes apparent why the resort’s price was so high. It’s like stepping into Khao Yai. You are visually treated to so much greenery. The resort is large, much larger than I remember the previous Marriott being. The new owners, members of the Charoen family, (Chang Beer), took over the property and except for a few building close to the beach and some trees, completely tore down the old hotel and started from scratch. The hotel offers 8 different room types starting at 39 square meters for the Superior and Deluxe room type’s, (Deluxe Sea View, Deluxe Pool Terrace, Deluxe Pool Access), 72 square meters for the Junior and Garden Suite’s, 108 square meters for the Ambassador Suite and a palatial 156 square meters for the Presidential Suite. All rooms have ocean or garden views, decks or patio’s and the Deluxe Pool Access rooms give you exactly that, the ability to step from your terrace right into the meandering swimming pool, one of several on the property.
Lobby
Recognizing that guests without children might not appreciate the noise the little ones may bring, the Marriott has an “Adult’s Only” pool that is separated from the rest of the resort by a lush wall of greenery. A large “All guest’s pool” is located near the beach and close to the expansive Kids Club and Kid’s Playground. The location of the three was all done by design with the idea that parents can enjoy the beach pool while at the same time keeping an eye on their children. Also nearby is the Pool Bar which serves refreshing drinks and snacks all day and is open for lunch and dinner. There is another bar located in the Lobby. The lobby is very large and was designed as a place for guests of the hotel or outside guests to meet and socialize. The Lobby Lounge and Bar has a Latin American menu theme and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with a “Smart Casual” dress code. Not far from the lobby and near the main street is the Siam Bakery. The Bakery is a perfect place to meet and enjoy a bakery item

or ice cream while upping your caffeine level with a nice cup of coffee. The Siam Bakery was designed so non-hotel guests would feel very comfortable stopping by. The Bakery is also a Deli and is open for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. The Resort’s all day restaurant is called The Amber Kitchen. This is where morning breakfast is served from 6 to 11AM, which is one of the latest ending times for breakfast of any hotel that I can remember. Your choices here are immense with many food stations catering to different ethnic types. When ordering at the egg station my first choice is always eggs benedict, which most hotels don’t serve, but the Marriott does and they were delicious! Their buffet breakfast also includes large fresh coconuts, which were very popular the morning I was there. In addition to breakfast the Amber Kitchen also serve a lunch and dinner buffet plus ala carte. The Resort’s signature restaurant is called the Big Fish which we cover in depth on page 14. Additional amenities include the Resort’s Quan Spa and its fitness center. While most people entering the resort wouldn’t be thinking about business, the Hua Hin Marriott is certainly set up for it with over 9,400 square meters of event space. Their Paksa Sawan Ballroom can handle a U-Shape conference for 60, a banquet for 180 or a reception for 280. They have an additional 7 meeting rooms that can accommodate smaller groups. These rooms, including the ballroom are also great for weddings or large social gatherings. Hua Hin’s very popular Multi Cultural Community (MCC) is booked into the ballroom on June 28th. The resort also has an outdoor space for seaside events for up to 250 guests. With all these facilities the Marriott Resort is not only the perfect resort for a weekend getaway, or a two-month holiday to disconnect from the real world, it is also the ideal venue for any type of event; be it a lavish engagement party, a beach wedding, a family reunion for long lost blood ties, a professional corporate meeting, a fun birthday party or an interesting conference in Hua Hin. If you are a local resident, stop by for a coffee at the Siam Bakery, a drink at their ocean front Pool Bar or a meal at The Big Fish or Amber Kitchen. Top of the Gulf Regatta From April 30th to May 4th the 12th annual Top of the Gulf Regatta took place in Pattaya. Presented by Ocean Marina, South East Asia’s largest marina, this year’s regatta welcomed over 700 sailors and will go down in the history books as one of the best yet and most definitely the biggest. A fleet of 271 boats ranging from Optimists to dinghies, windsurfs, keelboats and multihulls competed making it the largest gathering of watercraft anywhere outside an Olympics in Asia, in recent times. From the largest TP52's to the Rio-bound Laser sailors and windsurfers there was quality and sailing talent in abundance throughout the fleet. Day 1 saw excellent winds welcoming the four classes that kicked off the regatta. With 43 boats competing in the single and double monohull dinghy classes, 46 windsurfers in the RS:One class and 140 youngsters in the Optimist class, the “dinghy” fleets again reached record numbers at the regatta. Due to the large numbers in the Single Handed Monohull Dinghy Class (Class 9), Race Management split the fleet into two divisions: 9a (Laser Standard and Laser Radial) which totalled 24 entries, and 9b (Laser 4.7) with 19. The good winds suited the stronger sailors As conditions worsened, it was the windsurfers who had it tougher, having to content themselves with a single race to put Olympic athlete Siriporn Kaewduangnam at the top of the standings. Day 2 began in closer competition, as the multihull vessels made their first appearances, and more favourable conditions graced them as they took to the sea. The Thai / Swedish team aboard Amanda led by Lennart Fahlgren cruised to the top of their standings. The windsurfers were back in action too, in what would prove a taxing day for them after participating in five races scheduled by the management in order to re-attain the original race programme. It was Nyoman Suartana who took the spoils in this one, as his regularity became the key for the win.

Siripon Kaewduangngam continued her stong performances in the women’s division, putting herself in a strong first place after dropping solely two points in six races. But it’s the mark of a champion to rise when prospects drop, and that is exactly what Bualong did in Day Three. The Thai Olympian struck the consistency he lacked at the beginning to end up retaining his title. The winds continued to be favourable and the sun was as bright as it could get. A big day for the windsurfers, as they faced their last few races. It was an exciting and close affair, as a late challenge from Yancy Kaibigan looked set to give Nyoman Suartana. However, the Indonesian held off to become the eventual champion in his category. The women’s series saw a Thai pride podium, with unbeatable Siripon Kaewduangngnam ranking first, Sarocha Prumprai coming in second and Krongkaew Sakulfaeng bringing home the bronze spot. The fourth day of racing was equally enthralling as the first three, with the big guns taking centre stage. The multihulls parted on a twelve, at times fifteen knot wind speed – testimony to the ceaseless cocktail of weather conditions enjoyed across the four days of racing. Ray Roberts took time to get his act together and could only manage to close the gap with Kevin Whitcraft as the day progressed, who claimed top honours. Scott Duncanson’s and Chris Way’s closely fought third day battle met its fate at last, as the latter failed to follow the pace set by Duncanson, who ran out as the eventual victor. The victory was his and festivities ensued. The final day of the 2016 Top of the Gulf Regatta proved to be the best yet with a fresh 15 knot breeze and it was the final shoot-out for the keelboat and multihulls (classes 1-6) and with two quick windward/ leewards the challengers had their last chance to try and upset the respective class leaders.

Coming into the last day Kingdom Property (AUS), skippered by Scott Duncanson, had a seven point lead and bar a disaster were unlikely to let go of their grip on the Platu Coronation Cup. Rolf Heemskerk (MAS) finished second in Race 1 while Chris Way's Easy Tiger IV (AUS) slipped down to sixth place. Duncanson and his crew had a halyard problem which slowed them down on the race track and resulted in them finishing a “lowly” third, however, that was enough for him to secure the Platu Coronation Cup title with one race to spare. This is Duncan's sixth Platu Coronation Cup title and the first ever three-peat in the competition's 21-year history having won it previously in 2014 and 2015. Dichenko and crew went on to claim their third bullet of the series in Race 2 ahead of Heemskerk and Way, and with Duncanson not competing the final race, Way's third place was enough for them to hold onto second place overall, one point ahead of the fast-finishing Dichenko. In IRC 1 Kevin Whitcraft (THA) and his crew on THA72 finished their series with two more wins. Except for a retirement in Race 2, Whitcraft has made a clean sweep on his new TP52 in his first competitive outing and with it sent a warning shot the rest of the Asian-based TP52's. IRC 3 Class went to script with two more wins for Lennart Fahlgren's Amanda (THA) who's Thai/ Swedish crew scored seven wins from seven races to be the runaway winner. Second overall was secured by Martin Brown's Nautical Wheeler (UK) with Tim McMahon's SailQuest Hi Jinks (USA) in third. The Cruising class enjoyed five races over four days, a mix of windward/ leewards and some longer passage races. Scored using a Performance Handicap system Day 5 glory went to Pote Suyasinto (THA) and his crew on Le Vent who comfortably took the series title from Sein Samathi 1 (THA), skippered by Nukool Pothi, in second and Cedric Rimaud (FRA) and his 6-metre classic Selma, in third. A diverse line-up of multihulls in the Ocean Multihulls Class has meant some lonely upfront racing for Radab Kanjanavanit and his team on Cedar Swan (THA). Heading into the final day, the pressure was on Cedar Swan and with them sharing the spoils with Kirati Assakul's Sonic (THA) with a win each race, it's Sonic that claims the 2016 Ocean Multihulls class title. The icing on the cake was the first ever threepeat in the Platu Coronation Cup by Scott Duncanson – three victories in a row, bringing his total tally to six over the Cup's history. Quite a feat in anyone's eyes. With the racing over, the keelboat and multihulls sailors, Race Management, sponsors, media and VIPs came together to celebrate a successful Top of the Gulf Regatta at the Closing Party and Gala Dinner hosted by Ocean Marina Yacht Club.

May 15 - June 15 , 2016
N
akhon Ratchasima, better known as Korat, is the wondrous door to Isan, the Lao-speaking north-east, at the western edge of the Korat Plateau. The name Nakhon Ratchasima is both used for the city and the province of which it is the capital, and the shorter name, Korat, comes from an older name the city used to be called many years ago. Historically, it used to mark the boundary between Lao and Siamese territory. Korat is one of the major cities of Isan and is oftentimes referred to as one of the “Big Four of Isan”. Prior to the 14th century, the area of Nakhon Ratchasima was under the Khmer empire, King Narai of Ayutthaya, ordered a new city to be built on the site to serve as a stronghold on Ayutthaya’s north-eastern frontier. Nakhon Ratchasima was thereafter mentioned in Siamese legal documents and chronicles as a "second-class" city of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Today, with a population of just over 200,000, a host of shopping malls, a large sports stadium, a zoo, a multitude of interesting and diverse temples with fascinating historical backgrounds, museums and a lot more, there is a reason why Korat is one of the four most important role-playing cities of Isan. Being the gateway to beautiful Isan makes Korat a passers-by city but at the same time it has a lot to offer. Khorat is a mere three to four hour drive from Bangkok in a north eastern direction and therefore makes it an easy to reach destination. There are buses departing from Bangkok at the Mo Chit bus station and at the Victory Monument bus station leaving roughly every half hour. The ride to Korat is refreshing and inspiring, leaving behind the hard concrete jungle of Bangkok and heading to the large farmlands, green fields and great open spaces that start to emerge on the horizon, Halfway into the journey you’ll come across the Khao Yai National Park, one of the most popular National Parks in all of Thailand and the first encounter with the many cultural and entertainment spots the province has to offer. In Nakhon Ratchasima you’ll find the Kao Yai Floating Market and historical sites such as the Korat City Pillar, the Korat City Gates, the Korat Fossil Museum, the Petrified Wood Museum and the vast Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo (Also known as the Korat Zoo). At the Zoo you can spend an entire day, or even a couple of days and nights in comfortable chalets the zoo has to offer. Booking a Chalet is great in that it allows you to spend time alongside tigers, camels, marine life, lizards and the many other animal species from all over the world. Lagoon and Water Park allowing you to cool down from the heat, this venue is well suited for children of all ages. Other culturally enriching places to visit include the Phimai Historical Park where you can take a time machine to the past and witness ruins from as early as the 11th century. Phimai is the largest Khmer ruins complex in Thailand and comprises an inner moated city, 565 by 1030 metres, which was built in the 11th to 12th century with further additions in the 13th. An extraordinary feature of the architectural design of the sanctuary at Phimai, taking advantage of its geographical location, is the straight through way from the entrance door on the East leading to the farthest door, the 15th door, on the western end of the structural complex. The design was made to display the spectacular sunrise of the two annual crossings of the equator by the Sun, beaming the majestic aura of the rising sun from the entrance door on the East straight through the fifteen doors to the western end of the doorway of the sanctuary. Around each time of the equinoxes, visitors to this day crowd the outside square on the west end of the Prasal Phanom Rung to witness the awesome spell of the emerging sun over the horizon through the fifteen doors at the western end of the sanctuary.'' The Angkor style architecture of these historical gems inspired numerous important structures, cities and buildings in Thailand during later years. Just north of Phimai Historical Park, and not to be missed, is the Phimai National Museum which houses Khmer artefacts and works of art from excavations, not only from Phimai, but other Khmer ruins in southern I'san. This complex is the most outstanding example of Khmer Architecture in Thailand. Another important site to visit in the area is the Thao Suranaree Monument and the Wat Sala Loi, the former represents a true testament of willpower and determination as well as the influence of one sole individual. During an invasion of Korat in the early 1800s, the wife of an inefficient general took it upon herself to take control and lead the residents of Korat to defend their city. They were victorious, and Khunying Mo was awarded the honourable title of Thao Suranaree by the King of that era. The monument is worth visiting due to the historical importance of it and can be found in Korat City near the Chumphon Gate. Wat Sala Loi is a temple constructed by Thao Suranaree and her husband the general in the 1820s. The site hosts a plaster statue of the powerful heroine alone with clay statues depicting the life of Buddha. This temple is Khun Thao Suranaree’s final resting place and where her ashes have remained. Other important temples are

the Wat Phayap Temple, found in the city centre of Korat, but with a slight surprise the moment you enter. The interior of this temple has been made to look like a cave. If you find yourself wandering around in the city, pop in here for a quick look around. The temple won’t be found amongst the lists of top tourist attractions in the area, but the locals regard it as a very spiritual and peaceful building. Another temple constructed during early centuries is, Prasat Phanom Wan. Initially it was dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva and meant as a Hindu site, but over the decades it has became a place of Buddhist prayer. The Maha Viravong National Museum, is another must see, it was created around the art collection of an important Monk from the area and contains cultural pieces from historic sites. You will find Buddha images from different timeframes and also pottery pieces from far gone eras. The museum is quite small, but pumped full of rich Thai history and interesting visuals. Finally the Wat Dhammachakra Sema Ram also known as Wat Phra Non which means ‘Sleeping Buddha’ concludes the must-visit cultural and historical sites. Many travellers have seen the impressive reclining Buddha in Bangkok, but this similar sandstone sculpture is the very first one of its kind therefore making it the oldest one in Thailand. The piece dates back to the BC era and unbelievably it hasn’t been treated in order to be preserved. For those interested in the functioning of ancient cities, the Lamtakhong Dam is a must see. Its construction started
64

in the 1970s, in order to irrigate the surrounding farmlands. After some years it also became the water storage facility of The Lamtakhong Power Plant, which was a very first for Thailand. The dam is a relaxing spot to break away from the hustle and bustle of everyday city life. For nature lovers and enthusiasts, the Flora Park is ideal. This park is for those who want to drown themselves in a massive selection of plants and flowers while enjoying the aroma and the unique aesthetics nature has to offer; fill of freshness and vibrant color schemes. One can relax with a drink at the coffee shop or buy some souvenirs for family and friends back at home from the gift shop. If you happen to be there around March, you must not miss the Flower Festival. Although it may not seem like the best touristic attraction while visiting a foreign country, the Ratchasima Mall (Korat Mall) is considered one of the top shopping malls outside Bangkok. It offers a range of variety for every taste
and has a food court that brings cuisine from all over the world. The Korat Horse Racing Club is another attraction that may interest you. It might be seen as unethical to some, but the majestic horses are beautiful and if you like betting while enjoying good food and drinks with luck by your side, this may be the kind of attraction for you. Arts of Korat, a museum featuring 3D paintings is also a must see. It is a fantastic art museum that brings you closer to art and is nothing like what for many may possibly be a boring passive art museum. For those who tend to feel homesick and long for some familiar activities, there are five quality golf courses in the area, and can later enjoy, generous portions of Western food such as juicy burgers or a tender steak, at O&D Pub Restaurant in Korat. Sit back, relax and enjoy some easy tunes while watching international sport on the big screen
televisions. The pub offers a variety of local and international beers and a delicious Thai food selection too. Accommodation in Korat is a no brainer. It is very easy to find in the city, ranging from very cheap apartment rentals to surprisingly low-priced 5 star hotels. The people are quite unique too, speaking a dialect known as Thai-Korat, which is far different from the Isan-Thai spoken in other more North Easterly provinces. In conclusion, Korat is a must see. It is a culturally and historically enriching province that is worth going to in order to truly comprehend Thai tradition, Thai culture and Thai history which in turn helps gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of the land of smiles today.

PTT Green In The City
68
May 15 - June 15 , 2016
E
verybody in Thailand can be sure to have heard of PTT. The giant state owned Thai gas company is one of the biggest corporations in the country and is the only one to appear in the rankings of the Fortune Global 500 Companies, in which it marks the eighty first spot. We would not however, picture the PTT as being involved in environmentalist projects such as the PTT Green in the City initiative, a development venture that aims to provide cleaner and purer urban surroundings. Located in Sukhapiban 2 (considered within the bounds of Bangkok), the PTT Green in the City provides an alternative view of the Bangkok concrete jungle. With an impressive coverage of twelve rai, this is a project which aims to not only bring a sense of greenery
amongst a metropolitan landscape, but to raise awareness about the benefits of conservation. The composition of the project’s features will be divided in the following manner: seventy five percent of the land will be composed of greenery, through either lush forest or through plantations. This will consist of an assorted mix of lowland forest, mixed, forest, dry dipterocarp forest, brackish water forest, mangrove forest and waterfall and limestone forest. Ten percent of the land will be composed of water: be they lakes, streams of simple environments in which water flows abundantly. Lastly, fifteen percent of the work will be composed of centres in which workshops will be carried out, in which schemes to raise awareness and promote sustainability will be carried out. These building will be stylised in
accordance to the environment and the surrounding aesthetics. The project will promote for the creation of an ecologically compatible model of growth, tracing the steps of Dr. Akira Miyawaki, who advocated for the following in order to achieve the former: the first element is to grow plants that belong to the ecosystem in which the project is taking place. The second is to grow plants through a system of seeds, as opposed to tree planting, which can damage the soil and the plant itself. The ideal principle is to plant three to four plants of different species for every square metre of land. What makes the initiative resemble natural however, is the randomised allocation of these plants, which will eventually grow to display the assorted and arbitrary allocation of greenery of a real forest.

This having been done, the PTT Green in the City program will support the raising of awareness through an educational centre on how to “go green”. This impressive initiative is equally as important as the physical part itself, since conservation begins from changing the mind and different habits of society as a whole. This will thus be an extension of the PTT Project established in 1994 called “Build a forest within 1 million Rai”, and will add strength to the good work that this first initiative began over twenty years ago. We encourage all of you not only to visit this project in its early stages, but to take care of the environment that surrounds you, both here in Thailand and the rest of the world.

How to think like a House Hunter By Russ Downing
72
May 15 - June 15 , 2016
W
hether you are trying to buy or sell a home, thinking like a house hunter is critical.
Buyers have a “checklist” and want a home that will “check” all of their boxes. Everyone’s list is different, but some features are on most people’s lists so they are deemed hot. As a seller, it’s important to realize what house hunters are looking for to make sure your home stand out. Here’s some things house hunters think about.
LOCATION: Can I see myself living here? Location, location, location. It’s the top rule of real estate. Buyers always seem to want the best location they can get in their budget, whether that’s being on a golf course, having a killer view, being close to shopping or being close to town. LOOK: Would I want to call this my home? Buying a particular house tells a lot about a person. First impressions are huge so making sure all of the details are picture perfect is a big deal. SIZE: Is the house going to be big enough for my needs? Since house hunters usually use search filters when looking for homes on property websites, they generally have a minimum count in mind for bedrooms and baths. In order to make sure your home is most appealing, ensure that all of the bedrooms are counted even if you’ve been allocating one for a different use. Point that out to perspective buyers, or make sure your agent does. Just because a bedroom works as an office for you, it may not for the next owner. STUFF: Will my stuff fit? For house hunters, it’s always about them and their needs. They want to figure out how they would live in the space and how their TV and couch will be configured. Really! TV’s are getting bigger and bigger so the easier it is for buyers to see how they can use the space, the more likely they are to feel at ease. Artwork can be another priority for buyers. I recently had a client who years ago had purchased a 70-year-old handmade tapestry in Myanmar that was huge. So big in fact that he has never been able to hang it because he’s never had a house with a big enough wall, in a family area, that could accommodate it. One of the criteria of every house we visited was would this tapestry fit.
LIVABILITY: Is the house updated? Could I move right in? If not, what would I need to do? When a house is turnkey, a buyer could move right in and not do a thing. Some homes are cosmetic fixers, meaning they are a bit outdated but functional and could be upgraded over time. Then there are the major fixers. There’s a buyer for each, but as a seller it’s best to know where your home falls on this scale and price accordingly. As a buyer, it is equally important to do your research on budgeting for a home and deciding whether or not you want to pay top dollar for a turnkey home or pay less for a fixer and invest money and time in fixing it up. A client recently sold a condominium he had had on the market for over 7 years. In one week he had two families bidding against each other to buy it. There’s a buyer out there for your property but with the above tips hopefully you’ll find them sooner rather than later. 25 Ways to be good for someone else By Lori Deschene
W
hen I was a teenager, right around the time I knew everything, my mother used to tell me I only remembered the bad things. When I told stories about my family, they didn’t revolve around family beach trips, barbecues, and vacations; they focused on painful memories and all the ways I felt my mother had “ruined my life. The same applied to friends and milestones in my life. I chronically remembered and rehashed the worst experiences. In fact, straight through college I followed up every introductory handshake with a dramatic retelling of my life story, focusing on a laundry list of grievances about people who had done me wrong.

“Don’t wait for people to be friendly. Show them how” ~Unknown
It was as if I was competing for most royally screwed over in life, like there was some kind of prize for being the most tragic and victimized. (Full disclosure: I hoped that prize was compassion and unconditional love. It was more like discomfort and avoidance). Not everyone is as negative or needy as woe-is-me-younger Lori was, but I’ve noticed that many of us have something in common with my misguided past self: We focus on how we’ve been hurt far more than how we’ve been helped. Psychologists suggest that to some degree we complain because we’re looking to connect with people who can relate to the universal struggles we all face (though in some cases, complaining is a constructive way to find solutions to problems as opposed to a chronic need to vent negativity). I think there’s more to it, though. When we complain about everything that’s gone wrong or everyone who has done us wrong, we’re drowning in our self-involvement. It’s an epidemic in an individualistic culture where self-reliance, autonomy, and the pursuit of personal gain can leave us feeling isolated and pressured to succeed. This may not be true for everyone, but I know when I get caught up complaining, nine out of ten times what I need to do is stop obsessing about the circumstances of my life. It’s taken me a long time, but I’ve learned we don’t need to live life in a constant state of reaction to things that seem difficult or unfair. We don’t have to be the victims of bad coming at us. Our lives don’t have to be the sum of our problems—not if we take responsibility for putting good into the world.
That starts by fostering a greater appreciation for our interdependence. We are not alone. The world is not against us, and we don’t have to be against each other. We don’t have to let our fears, insecurities, and wants boil over inside us until we’re all a bunch of incompatible toxic chemicals waiting to explode the second we collide. You can always find a negative story to tell—some situation when another person was insensitive, selfish, uncaring, unfair, or just plain wrong. You can also find an underlying struggle that doesn’t justify but might explain their behavior. If you absolutely can’t channel that compassion and patience, you can always find at least one good thing someone did in your day. When that stranger held the elevator open, when your coworker let you take the lead in your meeting, when your mother called just to say she loves you; they’re all reminders people are looking out for you—maybe not all of them, and maybe not all the time, but probably more than you notice. An even better way to honor our interconnection: be someone else’s positive story. Be the kindness that reminds someone else the world is not against them. Give them an anchor of positivity to find later if their circumstances seem overwhelming. If you’ve ever ended a stressful day with a long hug—the type that’s so needed and loving it’s near impossible not to relax and receive—you know the power of a simple gesture. Need some ideas for simple kindnesses? I recommend checking out the Tiny Buddha Facebook page, where I recently asked friends, “What’s the kindest thing you can do for someone else?”
