elcome to Issue 9, Volume 7 of HOT Magazine. Exactly one hundred years ago, a gentleman named Walter Owen Bentley decided to get into the motorcar business. Since then, Bentley Motors has grown into a world leading car-maker and also a symbol of Great Britain, as well as the sole provider of wheels for the Queen through their 2002 released State Limousine. Inside this issue we introduce you to the all-new Bentley Silver Spur for 2020, described as “The finest super-luxury sports sedan ever built.” And did I mention fast? This luxury living room on wheels can accelerate from 0 to 100 Km’s in 3.8 seconds and top out at 333 Km’s per hour. Dust off your shoes, climb in and turn to page 30 to see which of the 30 colour choices you should choose. From August 28th to October 1st motorheads throughout Thailand were worked into a frenzy as they converged on Bangsean for this year’s Bangsaen Grand Prix. Hundreds of thousands descended on this paradisiacal beach town, an hour drive from Pattaya, to watch race cars of all sizes and types race along the city’s streets that were transformed into the largest smooth track in Thailand. Dig out your motorhead “groupie- gear” and turn to page 48 to hear the roar of the race engines.
Fancy being a Russian Oligarch floating on your Super Yacht securing major pipeline deals? This month we introduce you to a family that desires the same. Unfortunately, they don’t have billions but they did have a recent family inheritance which they splurged on a charter yacht and a trip thru the Greek islands. Dig out your deck shoes (by now I hope you have them handy) and turn to page 56 to read about their Long Yacht Summer. On August 9th at the 5-Star Athenee Hotel in Bangkok, close to 600 of the Kingdom’s Real Estate elite met for the 14th Annual Property Guru Thailand Property Awards, the longest running and most prestigious real estate awards program in Thailand. Former Best Developer title holder Magnolia Quality Development Corporation Limited (MQDC) won an astonishing 17 trophies spanning a wide array of properties, including Best Ultra Luxury Condo, Best Smart Home & Best Senior Living Development. Dig out your finery and turn to page 64 to find out who else received recognition from the gold standard of Real Estate excellence. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month’s issue. As always, thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

dation, a non-profit organization that encourages excellence in education by providing scholarships, enrichment programs, and support to various educational institutes throughout Thailand and W English a transformation academy of English Speaking for Thai professionals seeking to prepare and better themselves for international working environments. The aim of the event was to prepare the young generation for the digital
disruption and to learn more of Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities, how it might impact various industries. The event also sought to encourage students to engage in dialogue about AI, understand how AI works, the ethical implication of AI and the technology that is shaping their future. The TECH TALK session featured 3 speakers; Founder and CEO of BlockchainLabs.ai, Mr. Iwan Spillebeen, Digital Marketing specialist
HOT AROUND BANGKOK and educator, Mr. Andrew Baker, and former MP, Cabinet Advisor and Tech Industry promotor, Mr. Vachiramond Gunnakasemtanawat. They shared their insights and life experience, as well as highlighted trends on current technologies, the future of AI, education 4.0 and the ethics of Artificial intelligence. Khun Sumanee Guna Kasem, a worldclass antique collector and Thai billionaire hosted the much-anticipated event in the dining hall of her mansion. Those in attendance felt privileged to be able to enjoy afternoon tea at the table that has received and entertained members of Royal families, Ambassadors, and world-famous figures. The afternoon tea session was certainly one of the highlights of the event. Khun Sumanee spoke during the event saying, “It is always an honour to be able to motivate young minds. The talent you have and displayed today will be the proof that you have the potential to become a worthy citizen of our society and help others in various ways.” W English students also had an opportunity to showcase their work by giving a presentation expressing their views and thoughts on “The impact of digital transformation on each industry” during a Think Tank session. Three guest speakers together with Khun Paralee Tohsouksee, (English Unlocked Specialist and Founder of W English) were present as mentors and commentators during this session. The event was a great success and ended with a remarkable closing speech by K. Vachiramond urging the students to continue their journey of lifelong learning by asking themselves “WHY”. “The question that I often ask myself before I do anything is “WHY” Why am I doing this? Why am I here today? And to see the development of young Thai people who are willing to strive for their dreams is the “WHY” to me today. So my advice to you is to find your own “WHY” to what you want to do in life. At the end of the event Maneemoncha Foundation and W English announced their upcoming event: SEPTEMBER ISSUE; Artificial Intelligence in Fashion. While there he’ll learn the science, art, and craft behind Wild Turkey Bourbon hosted by the legendary master distillers Jimmy and Eddie Russell.
HOT AROUND BANGKOK
It was just last year that Eddie Russell himself was in BKK teaching a master class on one of the world’s favorite bourbon’s, Wild Turkey. The Distillery for Wild Turkey Bourbon is situated on a deep limestone shelf on the Kentucky River. The shelf acts as a natural filter and provides the distillery with crystal clear water, vital to making such a high-quality product.
The whiskey is fermented for 72 hours. The famous Wild Turkey brand name first came about back in 1940 when distillery executive Thomas McCarthy took a few warehouse samples on a Wild Turkey hunting trip with a group of friends. The following year, his friends asked him for “some of that Wild Turkey whiskey” and the brand was born.
Wild Turkey is distilled and then aged in the highest quality new American oak barrels with the heaviest char available. The Number 4 “alligator” char imparts a smooth flavor and a deep amber color to the whiskey. Wild Turkey is one of only a few bourbons to use this expensive, deep char.

100. Andreas Italian Restaurant & Grill achieved number four with an outstanding score of 91. Chef and owner Andreas Bonifacio opened Andreas in 2014 and has continued to build the restaurants reputation, with the 2019 Tatler Thailand Best Regional Restaurant listing the latest recognition. A Michelin star trained chef with 28 years of culinary experience. Originally from Trieste, Italy, Andreas has spent 14 years in Thailand including ten in Hua Hin.
Entering and ascending the broad staircase at Andreas takes us into a long slim dining room with intimate lighting. Timber floors add a warm tone while the floor to ceiling glass windows provide an airy feel. Wine glasses glint in the soft light. Staff escort us to our table with a quiet assuredness. Menus arrive and drink orders happen almost instantly. We feel we are in for a good night! The restaurant has two dining areas. The airconditioned first floor where we are, with its glass-walled wine cellar
and open kitchen. A bar area is on the rear patio along with a spiral staircase leading to the open-air roof-top covered terrace with comfortable, boothstyle seating. It’s the balmy, breezy and leafy outlook of this roof-top dining area that immediately captures the imagination. Dare I say, a Mediterranean feel with a tropical twist. Three dishes from the starter menu set off our Andreas food journey. ‘Il grande antipasto di pesce’ - a quartet of seafood. Plump scallop, succulent local prawns and tender squid fresh from
Pak Nam Pram - all freshly grilled. The final seafood on this antipasti plate is Tartare of Hamachi. Japanese Yellowtail Jack with it’s rich, smooth and buttery flavours and somewhat smoky taste. Perfect to round out this plate of delectable seafood textures and flavours. Next, grilled Tomino – a cheese from the region of Piedmont. This individual small and round of cheese with a thin rind enclosing a soft and ivory centre is grilled and served with everso-thin tantalising tendrils of sliced
Italian Speck. A smoked and cured pork, typically from the Tyrol region of Italy. The plate is finished with large brown mushrooms quartered, breaded and fried. Contrasting yet complementary flavours where the produce shines. Our final starter is crescent-shaped agnolotti pasta filled with duck confit, topped with a cream sauce and panfried foie gras and shavings of black truffle. A well-balanced plate of rich, gamey heaven.

Shared amongst the table is our middle course, Risotto with porcini mushrooms. Creamy, yet rich with the flavours of the stock and porcini, the arborio rice plump and still al dente in the centre. Our mains take us to verdant cattle grazing pastures as well as the Southern Ocean. An oven-baked Tasmanian salmon fillet served with grilled asparagus and hollandaise sauce. The salmon - a delicate shade of soft pink, moist, flaky, and easily coming away from the skin. From the pasture, a slow-cooked (24 hours) Veal “Ossobuco” served with polenta and saffron-infused risotto. Deliciously tender meat which had all members of our party going back until the plate is wiped clean of every morsel of the melt-in-your-mouth veal and its hearty sauce. Andreas prides itself on its grilled meats with the menu featuring export quality beef, and lamb from Australia. In fact, Andreas is so committed to presenting these meats in their best possible way he has imported from Spain, a Josper oven grill. A grill connoisseur’s dream machine! Not too hungry and looking for something simple? No problems as the wood-fired pizza oven on the rear patio is always ready, with the menu offering eight options. Wine can be the perfect accompaniment to food and Andreas wine list currently boast 230 labels with all the

renowned Italian regions featured plus labels from other outstanding wine-growing countries. This could be the most comprehensive wine list in Hua Hin. The dessert menu offers many tantalising and tempting choices from Gelato or a selection of Italian cheese to vanilla-infused Crème Brule or panna cotta, moulded chocolate lava cake, a hazelnut and chocolate mousse, as well as everyone’s favourite, tiramisu. The dessert that caught our atten-
tion, though was zabaione. A dessert said to come from Piedmont or Venice, depending on which historian or food author you believe. A warm blend of egg yolks, wine, in this case, Masala, and sugar combined over a double boiler. The outcome – a warm, creamy, wine-scented froth that’s soothing and comforting yet elegant all at once. A glorious cloud of pure pleasure which Andreas serves in a stylish glass with a scoop of vanilla gelato at the base. Dolci Bellissima!
Parents with children may find Andreas ‘Family Pizza Day’ which happens every Saturday from 12 to 1:30pm a fun option. Children make their own pizza from rolling out the base, to adding the sauce and toppings. These are then baked in the wood-fired oven. Parents can share the family creation or order something additional from the menu. Book ahead to avoid disappointment. Andreas tells us to watch out for a new addition around November this year. The ground floor of the building will open as a more casual dining option. Come with a group, order some of the soon to be offered half meter-long pizza, indulge in some of the on-tap quality house wine, or start tasting your way through their new whisky bar. Exciting new additions to look forward to. HM: Khun Bee, From the outside you appear to have what many would call a dream job in that you are paid to go to high end parties throughout Thailand. Before we get to that, can you tell us a little about yourself, where were you born and what was your childhood like? BI: I was born in Songkhla. My father’s side of the family is into Palm Oil, Petrol Stations and Rice Trading. My father’s parents are 100% Chinese. As a young girl I was sent to Bangkok and spent more time with my mother’s side of the family which was Thai. My Uncle, Prapas Boonyindee was the Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior. I was raised mostly by my grandmother who was very strict and controlling. Proper speech, having to say “Ka” at the end of every phrase! Dinner was always at 5.30 sharp. Everyone had to eat at the same time. At 8pm I had to read. Every night I had to go to bed between 8:30pm & 9pm, except for the weekends. That is why to this day, I love the weekends! (Big Smile). That said, I recognize now the benefit I received from the strict upbringing and it allowed me to get into a good school and University and made me who I am today with a good work discipline. HM: You have a Bachelor of Science Degree from Thammasat and a Master’s from Stamford. We’re you driven to succeed thru college with a direction of what you wanted to do once you graduated? BI: Well, at first I wanted to be a beautician. My parents asked me, what are you going to earn from that and I said I don’t know. My boyfriend at the time suggested I try sales so I took a sales job at a 4 star Hotel in BKK. It turned out I was quite good at it and I was promoted. I ended up working for a few high end hotels and enjoyed not only the work but also dressing up every day. Plus, working in a 5 star hotel you are surrounded by luxury and that is so me.

One day one of my senior friends who worked with Pernod Ricard invited me to join the company as he felt that my life and profile was a match for what they were looking for. I went to interview and got the job right away. It was a big jump from Hotelier to the alcohol business! My mom, being Buddhist, was against me working with alcohol and I had some reservation myself but in the end we came to the conclusion that as long as I was working with honesty and sincerity we were good! And that’s when I started in the alcohol business. HM: You worked for Pernod Ricard, the world’s second largest wine and spirits company and were the first woman to be promoted to Regional Sales Manager. What was that experience like, what was your biggest take-away from your time there & why did you decide to leave? BI: When Patrick Castanier, former MD of Pernod Ricard Thailand, first wanted to promote me to Regional Sales Director I turned him down because I didn’t feel I could lead the all male sales team, who were a mix of foreigners and Thai’s, all of whom were much older than me. Patrick was persistent, saying he believed in me and that he saw something in me, that I could make a difference. Eventually I believed in him and went on to lead my team to hitting budget in a very tough year. We did it by coming up with the growth strategy of “Premiumization”, focusing on the prestige market I enjoyed my time at Pernod Ricard but family issues caused me to move to Singapore for a while. Upon returning to Thailand my plan was to support my family by working at a small resort they have but working with siblings proved to be too challenging so I decided to go back to working in a field that I enjoyed! HM: You now work for Independent Wine & Spirit (Thailand) Co. Ltd., also known as IWS, with the title of PR & Trade Marketing Director. Did you have that title when you first started and what is a normal day like for you?

BI: When I first started with IWS I was handling the Sales & Marketing for just one brand but the company’s Managing Director saw something in me (again) and wanted me work across all brands in the company which is almost 300, but most of my time is spent on our main brands. A big challenge, but one I enjoy, is dealing with all the different brand owners as each has their own style and character. I find it fun and good challenge. HM: Stealing a lyric from the pop group Aqua, If you replace the word “Barbie” with “Party,” you’re a party girl in a party world. Because of your job, you go to so many great parties! What is that like on a weekly basis? BI: Ohhh I really like “party girl in a party world.” (smiling). Most weekdays I have events lined up as I get a lot of invitations. Almost every night I have to do make up and dress up. Most weekends however (when there aren’t events), you’ll find me with NO make up & flat shoes. If you see

me at the mall you’ll probably see me with the sunglasses coz I have no make up, (she laughs). HM: When your work surrounds you with 300 different brands of alcohol, what do you tell the waiter when asked what you would like to drink and what do you like to do when you aren’t at a work function? BI: I am a Burgundy and Champagne lover! I love being with a small group of my close friends as we enjoy a good champagne or a fine burgundy! Regarding off time, I love Sunday brunch. One of my favorite places for Sunday Brunch in Bangkok is Aqua, inside the Anantara Siam Hotel. Here I can enjoy a lazy Sunday with wonderful food and drinks while being surrounded by tropical foliage, all in the heart of the city! Other joys include shopping and travel. My maid tells me often that with the money I spend on clothes, shoes and bags she could buy many houses for herself (laughs). I’m told
I’m a fashionista, I am not sure about that, but I do get great pleasure from dressing up for work every day. I also love traveling, experiencing new cultures and trying new foods. My last trip, which was quite spontaneous, was to Amsterdam, I loved it! Additionally, I like to go to temple at Tumboon and I also do meditation 2-3 times a year. My family provides a lot of support for the temple and for my upcoming birthday I am looking forward to providing food and snacks for 330 disadvantaged children. HM: Finally Khun Bee, when you close your eyes and think of the perfect evening, what thoughts does your mind conjure? BI: I am very positive and optimistic. For me, the perfect evening is anywhere I am with good company and a glass of fine wine or champagne (Smiles).

Bentley Flying Spur New For 2020
I
t’s been 100 years since the Bentley brothers first began selling cars and the company has come a long way since then as the makers of one of the most desirable luxury cars in the world. And what better way to celebrate their centenary than with the launch of “the finest super-luxury sports sedan ever built.”
30
HOT Magazine
About two and a half years since it was spotted testing for the first time, the all-new Bentley Flying Spur is here. The previous model had a twinturbo W12 engine with an output of 626 hp but this time it gets a betterupgraded engine with same output but a better jump in torque from 800
– 900nm. The Bentley Flying Spur 2020 can now achieve 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds. The new generation rides on the same MSB platform as the Continental GT and the Porsche Panamera To improve comfort as well as handling and drivability from the previous Flying Spur it took the 8-speed Dual
Clutch ZF transmission from the new Continental GT which means smoother and quicker shifts and a nudge better on fuel economy. Electronic rear-wheel steering is a brand new addition to the Spur, and assists in both slow and fast driving situations. When you’re parking, for example, the rear wheels turn in the
opposite direction to the front ones to reduce your turning circle and simulate the handling of a shorter wheelbase machine. On the highway, it’s all about comfort, the rear wheels turning in the same direction as the front ones to make lane changes a graceful dance step to the side with virtually no problem. Instead of the permanent All Wheel Drive in the previous Spur model, the
drivetrain is now predominantly Rear Wheel Drive, but capable of smoothly adding power to the front axle when the conditions or driver inputs start making the rear wheels slip. Bentley says the result is a sharper steering car when you’re driving it hard, and the understeer effect of permanent All Wheel Drive is totally gone.

Likewise, there are sensors constantly monitoring both the ride height per wheel and the cornering forces in play, and systems tuning the air suspension and variable-stiffness anti-roll bar to keep the ride smooth and level. Peerless luxury and class are hallmarks of the Bentley brand and the all-new 2020 Bentley Flying Spur is no exception to the rule. Inside, the third-generation luxury sedan will feature what it calls an automotive world-first, which is threedimensional, textured leather upholstery. A new pattern of fluted leather seating comes standard, with diamond-quilted and three-dimensional diamond quilted leather door inserts available on the options sheet. The seats are heated, ventilated, can give massages, and have adjustable bolstering. There’s more legroom inside now, thanks to a 130mm longer wheelbase. Like in the Continental, the Flying Spur has a digital instrument panel and rotating 12.3 inch infotainment screen. There are three stereo options, but the one you need to know about is the Naim for Bentley system, which has 19 separate speakers, a 2,200-watt peak output and a pair of active bass transducers built into the front seats. Also on the extracost menu, a full-length panoramic glass roof with an inset sunroof. Retractable Alcantara blinds shield passengers from a harsh sun, interior mood lighting in seven colors shields eyes from the mundane end of the light spectrum. The main feature is a 12.3-inch display in the center of the dashboard which, like the display in the latest Continental GT, rotates to reveal driver gauges or a blank panel that allows the dashboard to flow uninterrupted across the full length of the cabin. Unlike early versions of the Continental GT, the Flying Spur can now be driven with that blank plate on show -- ideal for those who don’t wish to be too distracted by screens. Its high price tag, luxurious interior ambience and spacious cabin definitely make the 2020 Bentley Flying Spur an ideal car to be chauffeured around in. It has been redesigned with even more incredible levels of performance and even more luxurious cabin accommodations as part of the brand’s push to reclaim some space at the top of the ultra-luxury heap. It’s not often that ultra-luxury cars are fully redesigned, and it’s even rarer that a prestige automaker revises its entire lineup over just a few years. The 2020 Bentley Flying Spur banishes forever the visual awkwardness of its two Phaetonplatformed predecessors, proving that third time’s truly the charm. The 2020 Bentley Flying Spur will premier in Thailand at the Thailand International Motor Expo starting on November 29th with first deliveries expected early next year. The base price for the Flying Spur is 22.9 million baht, an increase over last year but for the target clientele this is unlikely to be a problem.

Trat Province

The province has a very rich history, tracing back to the reign of King Prasat Thong of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya. The strategic location of Trat has proved to be vital in the development of a country’s stability and economy. Trat served as a checkpoint and buffer city in 1767 and was
responsible for providing provisions to King Taksin the Great before he moved his navy from Chanthaburi to Ayutthaya, where he expelled the Burmese and liberated the Kingdom from Burmese rule. Its population has long been a mix of Thai, Lao, Chinese, Khmer and Vietnamese. In 1904, Trat was briefly annexed by the French army who were then in control of a lot of Indochina. However, it was soon handed back in 1907 in return for border land and what is now the town of Siem Reap. When you visit Trat you will see the old Siamese flag, depicting a single white elephant on a red background flying all around the town. This is to celebrate the province’s independence. Formerly known as Muang Thung Yai (“city of large fields”), Trat consists of various small and large islands. In the past the area was an important stop for sailors but nowa-
days it’s best known as the hopping off point for the 52 islands. Infamous for its diverse marine life, islandhopping is popular here, especially to Koh Chang and Koh Kood, the latter of which is also known as the “Maldives of Thailand”. Very few people choose to stay more than a night in Trat town, although the town is well-known for its bustling night market. The streets in the town center are lined with ‘Mom & Pop’ stores selling everything imaginable. The architecture tends to be drab, grey shophouses but there are some hidden gems as you approach the riverside area. It’s here that you will find a much more charming area with old wooden homes lining the narrow streets, some of which have been converted into budget guesthouses, coffee-shops and small restaurants.

The largest island in the east and the third largest in Thailand after Phuket and Samui, Koh Chang (Elephant Island) isn’t only well-known for its size. Its diversity is as grand as its name and the island offers a wide range of activities. Thanks to its mountainous and forested landscape, Koh Chang visitors get to enjoy not only the beaches but also hiking and relaxing in the Khlong Phlu waterfall area. An hour away from Koh Chang by ferry, Koh Kood is an ideal destination for those wanting to go more off-the-beaten-path while enjoying a variety of activities. Go snorkeling, kayaking, canoeing and swimming in the stunning Klong Chao Waterfall. From its crystal clear water, pristine beaches, lush tropical rainforests and waterfalls, the island is visibly the jewel of the east. But Koh Mak is the best base for divers. In between Koh Chang and Koh Kood, Koh Mak is not far from the Rang Islands, where you’ll find more corals than anywhere in Eastern Thailand. Among them, Koh Wai is the best diving spot as its home to a coral reef

conservation project. Don’t stop here though, Koh Kham (not to be confused with the one in Chonburi) is 15 minutes away from Koh Mak and here you’ll find that the small private island is covered with black volcanic boulders. The natural beauty of the island is enriched further by the marine life, including the giant clams under the sea. The black boulders are nothing in comparison to the beach in the Laem Ngop area though. The only black sand beach in Thailand, the island is also home to the iconic red and white Laem Ngop Lighthouse and offers a brilliant view of the sunset. If you’d rather remain on land, you’d be impressed with Koh Kradan which is ten minutes away from Koh Mak. Unlike Trat’s other mountainous islands, Koh Kradan is entirely flat. Instead of rainforests, the island is covered by grass and coconut trees, one of them somehow bending horizontal to the ground before lifting its top up to the sky. However, the stars of the island are the deer. Thousands of them, roaming freely.
The climate in and around Trat is one of the wettest in the country. The rainy season lasts from May to October. The upside is that this is a very fertile, green area of the country. You won’t see any of the parched landscapes that can be found in the north. It is one of the main fruit growing areas of the country with the fruit harvesting season being March to August. Trat grows the best salaks (or snake fruit) in the whole country. If you have time, stop at one of the farms to learn about them. Other fruits include mangosteen, rambutan and the controversial durian. Travel to Trat is not difficult. From Bangkok to the islands in Mu Koh Chang National Park, it takes about 4-5 hours by car or bus and then a 45-minute ferry ride. Trat Airport is served by direct flights from Suvarnabhumi Airport, though it’s a much pricier option. The visit would be well-worth it though considering Trat offers more than a picturesque Thailand travel destination. The surrounding natural beauty gives out a relaxing tropical feel that you can never get in the city. So if you’re looking for the ultimate holiday location, let Trat surprise you with its overflowing charm and beauty.

money, simultaneously wiping out the overdraft and reminding me that life is too short for ‘What’s the sensible thing to do?’ Second, a fellow boat-nut told me about Argentous — a four-cabin, 20-metre yacht based in the Greek islands that bridges the gap between no-frills skippered yachts and all-frills Abramovich-level superyachts. what my mum would have wanted, and fly out en famille to Corfu. We are picked up at the Corfu Imperial Grecotel, skipper Charlie scooping us up from the hotel’s beach in a mini speedboat that later packs away like something out of Thunderbirds into — those reading this in the hope of improving their yachting vocabulary should look away now — the ‘boot’ of Argentous. Speeding out across the bay, my 11-year-old stares
at the sailing boat, which gleams like an Aston Martin among a fleet of Trabants. ‘People must think we’re millionaires’, he says, stifling an enormous grin. On board, the grins get bigger. And it’s not just the kids. Upstairs (abovedecks?), the area beyond the steering wheel (helm?) looks like the VIP chillout zone of an uber-hip Ibiza nightclub, with wraparound slate-grey sofas we instantly earmark for sundowners. Beyond that, slung between a towering

Before coming, I’d pictured my three boys pulling on ropes and clambering up rigging, blinking at the horizon and turning into men before my eyes. However, not 20 minutes into our first sail across the Corfu Channel, all three disappear below deck to watch a DVD. For about seven seconds the wife and I wonder whether we mind, then sink back on to the sofas and gaze at the waves. That evening is a strange one. We drop anchor about two hours south of Corfu town in a secluded bay. We play Uno over canapés, Joy serves
us a delicious dinner above-decks, a warm sea-breeze drifts in below a pulsing smear of stars. We are living in the family holiday dream. And yet, the problem is we’re on a boat. Yes, it’s a seriously nice boat. Yes, the bed in our master cabin is bigger than our double at home. But it’s still a boat. It rocks, it creaks, it wakes me up with urgent noises from the en- suite. Some time around 4am, $13,000 suddenly feels like a lot of money to spend on a week of no sleep, with three kids who’d rather watch Harry Potter DVDs than learn to sail.
At 6am I give in and go up on deck. It is a scene of almost ludicrous beauty, like the British Virgin Islands circa 1950. We are all alone below a rocky, uninhabited island, the water slack and glassy, the only signs of life a pair of gulls painted pink against a vast, rising sun. I step down to the back of the boat and dive in. It is sunrise in the Mediterranean, I am swimming on my own, drifting round the boat — my boat. Climbing back on board, I found it utterly impossible to remember what made me so grumpy the night before.

It is the start of perhaps the best day in this family’s life. The original plan was for a three- or four-hour sail to Paxos, but Charlie, sensing we’re a lot less Ellen MacArthur than most Argentous clients, suggests we stay and play instead. Because as well as having its own mini speedboat, Argentous has more watersports toys than you can shake a selfie stick at. For the entire day, the boys snorkel, windsurf, paddleboard, waterski, jump off rocks or scream as they hurtle behind the speedboat on inflatable tyres. That night, Charlie runs us by speedboat to Sivota, a pretty seaside town on the mainland with a few modest tavernas and armies of friendly stray dogs and cats. We feast on calamari and kleftiko, and feed fish off the jetty between courses, sipping drinks in the balmy night air as the boys lick ice cream and cuddle kittens on their lap. ‘I love Greece,’ says the eight-yearold, a splash of freckles on his sunkissed cheeks. I know exactly what he means. The next day we do sail to Paxos. I say ‘we’, but the actual sailing is, obviously, down to Charlie. I’d love to reveal that, having fallen in

love with the sea the day before, the boys are impossible to prise from the helm, but as it happens, they’re mostly back belowdecks with Harry Potter. ‘Those box sets won’t watch themselves’, says the 12-yearold. Still slightly heady on yesterday’s success, it is impossible for me to get cross with him. That afternoon we drop anchor in a preposterously cobalt-coloured bay, Lakka, beloved of postcard-sellers and yacht charters. We windsurf, paddleboard, and take selfies against the improbable blue, but somehow the magic is gone, crowded out by the yachtie hoi polloi. ‘How about a walk?’ suggests Charlie, delivering a masterstroke. He drops us ashore, then takes Argentous along the coast to pick us up in the next village, Longos, leaving us to follow a thymescented donkey track between beaches and abandoned watermills, olive groves and hamlets. I’m not saying there’s no moaning, but in between grunts the boys chase crickets, stroke goats and play Marco Polo in the shallows at Manadendri Beach. It feels like we’ve wandered off the tourist trail to glimpse a Greece that few people get to see.
What you don’t get on Argentous, we discover waking to a force-six wind the next day, is guaranteed good weather. But Plan A’s loss (we had been aiming for the indecently photogenic Voutoumi Bay on Antipaxos) is Plan B’s gain, as we divert to Porto Ozias, a onetaverna inlet at the eastern end of Paxos. Glassily calm and inexplicably free of other boats, the inlet is a gloriously windless shelter from the storm. For hours we windsurf and wakeboard, sunbathe and read, eventually sailing in for dinner in Paxos’s main town, Gaios, where our boys play football on the cobbles below the church. So far, so Instagram, but don’t you get exactly the same memories — for half the price — on a bog-standard skippered-yacht charter? Well, actually no. For one thing those bog-standard charters might occasionally have a mini speedboat to ferry you between boat and port, but with nowhere near
enough horsepower to tow a waterski or wakeboard. Take away the water sports, and a yacht — for kids — is basically a floating prison. But more than that, Argentous makes you feel like royalty. It’s partly just the sleek lines, the teak deck, the towering mast. As we pulled into Gaios, people actually got out of their boats (daubed in rental-agency logos) for a better look. But it’s also the service: no-frills yacht charters are hard work. You cook, you clean, you pull ropes, you shop: it’s fun, but you’ll need a holiday afterwards. With Joy below-decks and Charlie at the helm, the only finger you lift on Argentous is the pinky on your drink. It’s a catered villa, a luxury mobile home and sports resort all rolled into one.

However, there were times on this trip — wakeboarding in that abandoned cove, swimming round the boat at dawn, playing cards on deck — when we felt so truly spoilt, so dizzyingly privileged, I knew it was worth every penny. A year on, Argentous’s owners have added three more luxury yachts to their fleet. One, Aurous, is a fivecabin catamaran with a trampoline and sundeck. My advice? Resort Living at Black Mountain
O
nly a decade ago the area was a rural pineapple field in the foothills west of Hua Hin. Today, it is a vibrant community growing bigger each year. Black Mountain is located just 12 kilometers west of Hua Hin. It is close enough to take full advantage of the city and beaches, while living in an idyllic rural environment. Black Mountain offers not only a world class golf course with all the amenities you can expect, but also a tranquil lifestyle with luxury living solutions

Nestled in the foothills of the valley, the private and artistically designed pool villas and condominiums are within a 15 to 20 minute drive of Hua Hin. Here you can take advantage of Black Mountain’s world-class golf and its plethora of amenities, such as; the Black Mountain Spa, Restaurant & Bar, a mini mart, bakery, miniature golf, billiards as well as the wakeboard & waterpark. In 2015, an International school opened at the entrance to Black
Mountain, bringing more pulse to the community. Since its opening, living at Black Mountain has become one of the best places for families with school children. The International school follows the UK curriculum and children can enroll for as little as a semester to years. There is also an active retirement community currently under construction overlooking the new Black Mountain 9 hole course. The Black Mountain Waterpark is spread out over 40,000 square meters
of land. Since it opened in 2011, it has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the region. The park is full of high quality modern equipment, all operated in line with the highest standards of safety and with highly trained lifeguards. There is a 17 meter high tower with 9 different slides, a spectacular wave pool which make the biggest waves in Thailand, a lazy river, a beach/infinity pool and children’s pool, all the makings for a really fun day.
Right next to the Waterpark is the Wakeboard Park. The Black Mountain Wakeboard Park is one of only six of its kind in Thailand. A cable system pulls riders at 30 kilometers an hour and can accommodate up to eight wake boarders at a time. The 800-metrelong area features two jumps and two sliders that provide a full opportunity for riders to practice and show off their skills.

Black Mountain’s spa offers luxurious full-service treatments for the ultimate in personal care. Using only the best spa products, the spa is an oasis from day-to-day pressures, featuring a full complement of services, including Thai massage, a variety of oil massages and body treatments. For those interested in more, you can also take part in yoga classes offered weekly. For those who find their peace in physical activity, you’ll find that the resort offers several courts for volleyball (with a sand court

and a grass court), paddle tennis, tennis and a well-equipped gym for a good old-fashioned workout. All the outdoor courts are equipped with floodlights for evening play. Even though the shuttle service around Black Mountain is excellent, many members choose to invest in their own golf cart. After all, it is more convenient to have your own transportation to come and go exactly when you want. There is also a complementary shuttle service from
Black Mountain to downtown Hua Hin. The mini-van departs from the car park downstairs at the Black Mountain clubhouse. Within the area, you’ll find that you are never too far from a kiosk to stock up on drinks, sandwiches and other necessities. The Black Mountain Golf Course clubhouse contains a pro shop, locker rooms, a main dining room, an outdoor restaurant and an aptly named Sky Bar as you enjoy a stunning view over the course. The restaurant itself features an eclectic
menu of western and Thai dishes as well as a comprehensive international wine list. The Black Mountain Golf Course prides itself on its ability to cater for all abilities and is specially designed for both resort and tournament golfers. The layout of the course itself was designed by Phil Ryan of Pacific Coast Design with interconnected waterways and aquatic hazards that add to the challenge and the beauty. Black Mountain Golf Club offers 27 holes, in
three nine hole courses. The original 18 holes are now called the East and North Courses. The new nine holes are called the West Course. It has been routinely voted as one of the best courses in Asia, and in 2012 was declared one of the 100 best outside of the USA. Black Mountain Golf Memberships are available for those who purchase property within the community. Black Mountain has invested substantial time and effort to investigate and develop a legal and safe way for foreigners to
secure an indefinite and limitless living solution here for you and generations to come. They offer an unparalleled living experience with a choice of large and luxurious course-side villas, expansive condominiums and two and three-bedroom pool villas all available for purchase. According to Black Mountain resident Beat Schlegel, “this is the ultimate Lifestyle Destination within a Great Community — in a luxurious and very friendly setting!

Bumrungrad Health Briefs What Research Is Revealing About Alzheimer’s Disease Alzheimer’s research has greatly expanded our knowledge about the root causes of the disease, shown us better ways to help slow the decline in cognitive function for some patients, and led to improved methods for reducing disease symptoms. More recently, Alzheimer’s research is yielding insight into risk factors for developing the disease, revealing what adults in their 20s, 30s and 40s might do to reduce their individual disease risk well before they reach the prime age when symptoms of Alzheimer’s typically begin. Here are some highlights of what research is revealing about Alzheimer’s disease.
1. Head trauma boosts Alzheimer’s risk
3. Proper hydration is crucial to brain health
Age is the leading risk factor for Alzheimer’s and most other types of dementia. More recent studies have revealed a connection between head trauma and future risk for AD. One head injury appears to produce a moderate increase in disease risk, and the risk rises further with each subsequent head injury.
The brain is nearly 75% water content. So even mild dehydration can cause neurological issues and cognitive impairment. Other symptoms may include brain fatigue, mood problems and sleep difficulties. Brains of people who are not sufficiently hydrated will show many areas of the brain as becoming thinner and losing volume over time.
The connection was seen in patients who suffered single-impact traumas, the kind that would occur in a bicycle fall or motorcycle crash, as well in patients receiving repeat-impact hits to the head that happen in boxing, football and other high-contact sports. The research should serve as an important reminder to wear protective head gear and quality helmets that fit properly, and make sure your children do as well.
2. Sleep quality can affect Alzheimer’s risk Scientists found that adults who saw sleep quality decline during their 40s and 50s had higher amounts of beta-amyloid protein, a primary AD risk factor, in their brains many years later. And adults whose sleep quality declined in their 50s and 60s had more tau protein tangles, also a primary AD risk factor. Based on these findings, adults who experience sleep disruptions, altered sleep patterns, insomnia or other changes in sleep habits should consult a doctor to discuss possible interventions.
Many Alzheimer’s patients fail to drink a sufficient daily volume of water. The aging process reduces the ability to sense thirst, and some people simply forget to drink water. Consistently drinking 6 to 8 eight-ounce servings of water per day (1.5 to 2 liters daily) is a healthy habit for your brain. Research continues to shed light on a number of aspects of Alzheimer’s disease, from diagnosis and treatment to causes and risk factors. Compared to even five or 10 years ago, we now have significantly more knowledge about the disease and the things within a person’s control that are likely to reduce one’s own Alzheimer’s risk. By Dr. Ketchai Suavansri, Neurologist specializing in Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology and Alzheimer's disease at the Neurology Center, Bumrungrad International Hospital
