y my my, aren’t these remarkable times to be living. We in Thailand have been fortunate so far in the low number of Covid cases compared to other countries. The closure of restaurants, bars, golf courses, gyms, hotels, massage, etc., have dampened our fun, but the cause is undoubtedly just. If you are a regular reader of our magazine, you know that we cover big social events and high society parties, as well as featuring an exceptional hotel and restaurant each month. Of course, there are no parties or big social events, and all of the hotels and restaurants are closed. Instead of presenting you with a magazine filled with empty pages, we have reached back into our archives to bring you some of our most talked-about articles, as well as original content.
two families. On June 27, 1875, 24-year-old Friedrich took his dad’s advice and did exactly that. Thru four generations of Lürssen’s, the shipyard has grown and prospered, having built the largest private yacht in length, the AZZAM at 180.5 meters, and the biggest private yacht in overall size, the Dilbar. Lürssen’s client list is a who’s who of royalty and the rich. Put on your best billionaire hat and turn to page 52 to see what some of your personal wealth can buy. Over our eight years of publishing, we’ve had the honor to interview some pretty exceptional individuals. One of our most popular interviews was in 2017 when we sat down with self-made billionaire Bill Heinecke. After completing high school in Bangkok, Bill borrowed $1,200 USD’s from a money lender and used the money to buy rags, mops, and buckets. He then set about getting contracts to clean commercial office buildings in Bangkok. In 1967 he founded Minor Holdings. “Minor,” being a nod to his youth.
Additionally, with 90 percent of our distribution points (hotels, restaurants, shops, etc.) closed due to Covid; this issue is available digitally only. Have you ever said to yourself, “I’d love to learn how to (insert) if only I had the time? With most of us staying home, self quarantining, you now have that time. Dig out your college sweater and turn to page 22 to find links to free college courses from some of the world’s best universities as well as photography classes from Nikon and tours through some of the world’s greatest Museums. In 1875, in Germany, a boat builder named Lüder Lürssen told his son Friedrich to start his own boat building yard, saying a single company would be insufficient to support
Fast forward to today and from that $1,200 borrowed, Bill, now a billionaire, has built MINOR International into a global powerhouse with 2019 revenue of almost 4 Billion USD’s and employing more than 85,000 people. Recline in your comfortable chair, turn to page 66, and get set to enjoy a true “rags to riches” success story. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month’s issue of HOT. We hope you enjoy the read.

Trials and Tribulations of a Global Restauranteur in the Time of Covid-19 (Editor’s Note: In our November 2019 issue we featured an article “Mango Tree Worldwide Propels Asian Cuisine To The World Stage. The article profiled the Thai based global restaurant chain Coca and Mango Tree Restaurants Worldwide and its Managing Director/Partner, Trevor MacKenzie. Trevor recently sent a letter to his employees and franchise owners which we think is worthy of sharing in this very unique time in our history.) Since January there has been no income. 90% of Mango Tree Worldwide’s restaurants in 14 countries have closed. How to survive in times like these? What are the lessons learned and how to come back stronger? By Trevor MacKenzie Managing Director, Mango Tree Worldwide

he best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry. That couldn’t be more true now as we sit and look at our 2020 business plans and go ah, what to do now. I am no different. Starting 2020, what company would not be proud of a 1st quarter performance with five new locations opened? How to stay positive when business is falling in tatters all around you? It has not always been easy to stay upbeat. I spent a whole day pretty much frozen. But the thaw started when my wife scolded me for looking grumpy. She was right. How can you lead by example if you are not positive all the time? I am naturally positive and I look for light in darkness and the light is appearing for our 71 COCA and Mango Tree brands. In China and Hong Kong. we are reopening and will climb steadily once more, day by day, week by week. In Thailand our delivery is working!

Transparency What’s undeniable, is business leaders are getting to see the reality of where their businesses are at and I am no different. This is the first major crisis for me, as I am sure it is for many. It has become a time of humbleness and transparency. Transparency in letting staff know the reality we were facing with 90% of our restaurants worldwide shut down. With virtually no revenue since January we had to be honest and say we may lose our jobs if we run out of cashflow. But because of transparency, my offer of a salary reduction, and staff helping with their salaries, we were able to stretch our cashflow. Then the magic started to happen. There were smiles, relief and we bonded as a team. They are positive, not stressed and working from home even more productively than before.
Fiscal Discipline We have always been fairly disciplined fiscally and I have prided myself on running a profitable overseas business for years. I got to see that we were not prepared for a six- to ninemonths tenure and it exposed some of our weaknesses in receivables. If we had been more diligent with our receivables we would not have had to go to our staff and ask for their help. It was also a great reflection that our business is one dimensional. We collect royalties and franchise fees and we do not have other sources of income so how do we retool our business to find other ways of creating revenue. We now conduct 15-minute brainstorms to everyday on how we can transform our business and the results have been superb.

Digital, Digital, Digital

Talking digital is important. It’s been important for years but moving on it has been a challenge. Now we have fast tracked launching our new Intranet platform called + Inspire with the goal of educating every single employee worldwide about our brands and the heart and soul of who we are along with other vital trainings. It’s also vital also because of delivery. To be honest I am not a delivery fan. I am the cook fresh and eat type. But with Covid-19 everything has moved digital because restaurants are closed. As delivery has such high charges it inspired us to start our own COCA MAN and Mango Man to deliver with the delivery fee going direct to the drivers. Digitally we are still in touch with our customers, even though we are closed, so when we open they will remember us and return! What’s my wake up in this – make my digital team even bigger, better and faster.
Mango Tree Hong Kong
Humanity Inspiration I was inspired by a speech by Andrew Cuomo the NY governor. He said “it’s time for leaders to stand up and lead, a time to inspire, a time to be empathetic and pick people up who maybe can’t get passed the anxiety”. It was music to my ears just a straight from the heart call on people to help one another. The next day I came in fired up and said guys we have to help inspire our franchisees in a way like we have never done before. We have started by sending out a newsflash twice a week that gives franchisees ideas on how to survive this crisis and a dose of real humanity as well. The outpouring of
humanity has led to a fast track launching of “Touching Your Community” a programme we have that connects our restaurants with farmers, fishermen, and local suppliers. I have to admit that this crisis has done wonders for our company and shows that we as a team will emerge stronger and better. It’s given us time to cleanup and re-connect, plus the impetus for digital and fiscal transformations. It’s given us insight that daily we need to slow down and take time to think, to let new ideas be heard vs trampled by the urgencies of day-today operations. Its taught us that at the end of the day we are human. We
are social and we cannot change that. While digitization has its place we still need to have the experience of our human senses. We need to come together to feel safe and inspired. We need to add value daily to others’ lives as kindness and giving are surely key the meaning of life. Just reflect for three minutes on what are you doing to help uplift people and think how can you spread this to three other people’s lives today. Now there is a new positive virus that can spread.

away or delivery items (within local area.) Eight years in business is quite an achievement, and even more so when it’s in the sometimes fickle restaurant game. That’s exactly what the restaurant we visited recently proudly boasts. They have to be doing something right to keep the doors open and customers coming back for all these years, despite competition opening up across Hua Hin constantly. So what is it that makes ‘The Palms Bistro’ a constant in Hua
Hin’s forever changing food scene? The large undercover relaxed, open-air seating options are certainly inviting. Welcoming staff got us to a table and settled very quickly ensuring drinks are ordered, and menus delivered. The large blackboard – full of specials and recommended dishes, makes deciding what to eat more of a challenge than expected. Choices! Choices! We would not be able to eat all that attracted us in one sitting.
HOT MAGAZINE RECOMMENDED Our group decided to share starters with a generous portion of Chefs Chicken Liver Pate served with wholemeal toast and surprising tasty pineapple chutney. This was accompanied by a platter of hummus, artichokes, baby gherkins and olives with two styles of toast. All Mediterranean taste delights. To round out our starters we chose the deep fried spicy Pork Larp balls (Larb Moo Tod) from Palm Bistro’s Thai menu. A gentleman on the neighbouring table complimented us
on choosing the Larb Moo Tod. In fact, he recommends this dish as the best possible accompaniment for a cold beer and now having tasted them I can see where he’s coming from. For mains, we mixed the dishes up again. Firstly two from Asia. Thai red curry Duck – delicate slices of duck breast with baby Thai eggplants and cherry tomatoes in a well-balanced red curry coconut soup served with steamed rice. And a Chicken and Spinach Balti curry served with steamed
rice and a ‘fresh from the pan’ fluffy Roti bread. Next a fusion dish which Palm Bistro do so well. Steamed Sea Bass fillets served like a layered tower atop sautéed mushroom and spinach, and at the base, potato mash in a bowl of lemongrass flavoured coconut cream. What a great combination and presentations. Delicate steamed fish, creamy mash, the ‘just right’ infused coconut cream and the textures of sautéed spinach and mushrooms.

And for our final main dish, we went with the recommendation of another friendly diner who said we must have the battered Fish and Chips. By his assessment – the best Fish and Chips east of London! And judging by his Austrian or German accent, I don’t think this was some blind nationalistic recommendation. The batter was crispy and crunchy yet still thin and evenly cooked. The generous piece of fish inside moist and perfectly cooked and the large chips worthy accompaniment as were the mushy peas and tartare sauce. When venturing out for an evening like this, dessert must make an appearance! The Chef’s fresh baked Sticky Toffee Pudding, and by our assessment at least, the ‘to die for’ Chocolate Brownie. Both served with vanilla icecream and whipped cream. Pudding heaven! For the not so sweet tooth on our table, the cheese platter with Port got my vote. Four different cheese, crackers, Pineapple chutney, grapes, and a glass of Port wine. What’s not to like about that offering to finish a meal – or at least, that’s how this correspondent thinks. The atmosphere was relaxed yet professional and service throughout the evening was attentive with staff happy to describe dished as they arrived and also ensuring drinks were regularly replenished.

The Power of Habits

n the last decade, our understanding of the neurology of habit formation has been transformed.
ter at Mississippi State University. For most of her life, Mandy had bitten her nails, gnawing them until they bled.
A quiet revolution has upended our concept of the way patterns work within our lives, societies, and organizations. And much of what we have learned has come from studying the simplest of habits — such as why people bite their nails.
Lots of people bite their nails. For chronic nail biters, however, it’s a problem of a different scale.
In the summer of 2006, for instance, a 24-year-old graduate student named Mandy walked into the counseling cen-
36

Mandy would often bite until her nails pulled away from the skin underneath. Her fingertips were covered with tiny scabs. The end of her fingers had become blunted without nails to protect them and sometimes they tingled or itched, a sign of nerve injury.
The biting habit had damaged her social life. She was so embarrassed around her friends that she kept her hands in her pockets and, on dates, would become preoccupied with balling her fingers into fists. She had tried to stop by painting her nails with foultasting polishes or promising herself, starting right now, that she would muster the willpower to quit. But as soon as she began doing homework or watching television, her fingers ended up in her mouth.
The counseling center referred Mandy to a doctoral psychology student who was studying a treatment known as “habit reversal training.” The psychologist was well acquainted with what has become known as the “Golden Rule of Habit Change.” Every habit has three components: a cue (or a trigger for an automatic behavior to start), a routine (the behavior itself) and a reward (which is how our brain learns to remember this pattern for the future.)
The Golden Rule of Habit Change says that the most effective way to shift a habit is to diagnose and retain the old cue and reward, and try to change only the routine. The psychologist knew that changing Mandy’s nail biting habit required inserting a new routine into her life. “What do you feel right before you bring your hand up to your mouth to bite your nails?” he asked her. “There’s a little bit of tension in my fingers,” Mandy said. “It hurts a little
bit here, at the edge of the nail. Sometimes I’ll run my thumb along, looking for hangnails, and when I feel something catch, I’ll bring it up to my mouth then. I’ll go finger by finger, biting all the rough edges. Once I start, it feels like I have to do all of them.” Asking patients to describe what triggers their habitual behavior is called awareness training, and it’s the first step in habit reversal training. The tension that Mandy felt in her nails cued her nail biting habit.

“Most people’s habits have occurred for so long they don’t pay attention to what causes it anymore,” said Brad Dufrene, who treated Mandy. “I’ve had stutterers come in, and I’ll ask them which words or situations trigger their stuttering, and they won’t know because they stopped noticing so long ago.” Next, the therapist asked Mandy to describe why she bit her nails. At first, she had trouble coming up with reasons. As they talked, though, it became clearer that she bit when she was bored. The therapist put her in some typical situations, such as watching television and doing homework, and she started nibbling. When she had worked through all of the nails, she felt a brief sense of completeness, she said. That was the habit’s reward: a physical stimulation she had come to crave. At the end of their first session, the therapist sent Mandy home with an assignment: Carry around an index card, and each time you feel the cue — a tension in your fingertips — make a
38

checkmark on the card. She came back a week later with 28 checks. She was, by that point, acutely aware of the sensations that preceded her habit. She knew how many times it occurred during class or while watching television. Then the therapist taught Mandy what is known as a “competing response.” Whenever she felt that tension in her fingertips, he told her, she should immediately put her hands in her pockets or under her legs, or grip a pencil or something else that made it impossible to put her fingers in her mouth. Then Mandy was to search for something that would provide a quick physical stimulation — such as rubbing her arm or rapping her knuckles on a desk — anything that would produce a physical response. It was the Golden Rule: The cues and rewards stayed the same. Only the routine changed. They practiced in the therapist’s office for about half and hour and Mandy was sent home with a new assignment:
Continue with the index card, but make a check when you feel the tension in your fingertips and a hash mark when you successfully override the habit. A week later, Mandy had bitten her nails only three times and had used the competing response seven times. She rewarded herself with a manicure but kept using the note cards. After a month, the nail biting habit was gone. The competing routines had become automatic. One habit had replaced another. “It seems ridiculously simple, but once you’re aware of how your habit works, once you recognize the cues and rewards, you’re halfway to changing it,” Nathan Azrin, one of the developers of habit reversal training, told me. “It seems like it should be more complex. The truth is, the brain can be reprogrammed. You just have to be deliberate about it.”
Today, habit reversal therapy is used to treat verbal and physical tics, depression, smoking, gambling problems, anxiety, bedwetting, procrastination, obsessive- compulsive disorders, and other behavioral problems. And its techniques lay bare one of the fundamental principles of habits: Often, we don’t really understand the cravings driving our behaviors until we look for them. Mandy never realized that a craving for physical stimulation was causing her nail biting, but once she dissected the habit, it became easy to find a new routine that provided the same reward.
Say you want to stop snacking at work. Is the reward you’re seeking to satisfy your hunger? Or is it to interrupt boredom? If you snack for a brief release, you can easily find another routine, such as taking a quick walk, or giving yourself three minutes on the Internet, that provides the same interruption without adding to your waistline. If you want to stop smoking, ask yourself: Do you do it because you love nicotine, or because it provides a burst of stimulation, a structure to your day, or a way to socialize? If you smoke because you need stimulation, studies indicate that some caffeine in the afternoon can increase the odds you’ll quit. More than three dozen studies of former smokers have found that identifying the cues and rewards they associate with cigarettes, and then choosing new routines that provide similar payoffs— a piece of Nicorette, a quick series of pushups, or simply taking a few minutes to stretch and relax — makes it more likely they will quit.
If you identify the cues and rewards, you can change the routine. Ok, now that you have the tools to take care of your bad habits, let’s start some new ones? History has shown that even the tiniest of habits can spur major changes in your life, especially habits known as “Keystone” habits. Keystone habits lead to the development of multiple good habits. They start a chain effect in your life that produces a number of positive outcomes. For example, say that your keystone habit is to sleep 8 hours every night. Your initial goal is to get more sleep. But this habit can also lead to positive, unintended outcomes like:
HOT Magazine
39
• Becoming more productive each day • Reducing the consumption of junk food before daytime • Having more time to exercise • Improved communications with your spouse because you’re not cranky At first you wanted more sleep, but this keystone habit generated a number of additional habits. The development of keystone habits can become a critical part of your personal development journey because You don’t have to change dozens of habits to get to your goals, you only have to change a few keystone habits that will have a ripple effect on your outcomes. A perfect example is a daily exercise habit. Let’s say you want to start exercising 20-30 minutes a day. This one habit can lead to other great habits such as eating healthy foods, avoiding junk food and becoming more efficient at work because you need that extra hour to work out. That one exercise habit can form major breakthroughs in other areas of your life. This particular example really
40
HOT Magazine
resonates with me because I found that by getting in better physical shape it led to many positive outcomes including an increase in self-confidence. Had I not started my gym habit I wouldn’t have had the self confidence to step out of my comfort zone and move half way around the world. A move that was the best thing I have ever done for myself. Other keystone habits include;
Eliminate negative self-talk. Let’s say you want to eliminate negative self-talk. This can have a positive effect in many areas of your life. When you stop talking negative, you start talking positive. When you start talking positive, you start thinking positive then positive things start to happen to you.
Eliminate the perfectionist mindset. Eliminating the ‘perfectionist mindset’ helps you open up and experience new things. When you’re a perfectionist you tend to not do things out of fear of failure. This makes it difficult to move forward with your dreams and aspirations. Once you stop this habit, it allows you to explore life more and you start taking action towards what you really want.
This particular keystone habit reminds me of an interview I once read from a successful business executive who recounted that every night at the dinner table, when she was growing up, she and her brothers would have to tell their parents one thing that they failed at that day. It was a requirement and her parents rewarded her for her failures. With no fear of failure, she was able to try, try and try again until she succeeded at a very high business level.
Eliminate the excuse habit. Things that you want in life won’t fall into your lap. You have to stop making excuses in order to get the things you want out of life. Once you stop this habit, it affects other aspects of life because you stop making excuses for a lack of results. This causes a major breakthrough because you’ll focus on achieving positive outcomes.
Start saving money. By saving money you will have emergency funds for the unforeseen. This can often lead to a more moneyconscious lifestyle for you and your family.
By saving money you’ll pay closer attention to the trivial purchases you’re making in life. Often this will reduce the amount of clutter in your life, another unintended positive outcome. Keystone habits work because they focus on making a dynamic change in your life. They produce a trickle-down effect. Soon you will notice more opportunities for self-improvement from the keystone habits that you’re forming. Success with a keystone habit happens when you take that first step. Right now, make a list of all the habits you’d like to develop. Pay close atten-
tion to the ones that can have a rippleeffect in your life. You’d be surprised at how this small change can generate many positive outcomes. And the good news is that you can start small. For example, if you are used to waking up at 7 am, waking up at 5 am is a big leap so instead set your alarm for 06:45 because 15 minutes is doable. As you get more accustomed to waking up early set the alarm another 15 minutes earlier. Eventually, over the course of a week or two, you will reach your two hour goal. Of course, you’ll also need to start going to bed earlier, he says. That’s something you can also do gradually as you progress.
You really don’t know how big a small change can be because it snowballs so quickly. By getting up earlier you’ll have the benefit of have more time to exercise, prepare healthier meals, read, or simply plan your day. Almost all successful people are that way because of the positive personal habits they have mastered. Start with small changes that are easy to accomplish and you’ll be amazed at the results you’ll achieve in short order.

ust an hour and 40 minutes by plane from Bangkok is Penang, also known as the pearl of the orient, it is one of the most touristic locations of Malaysia. Penang Island is one of the main components of Penang State. The island’s alluring charms and unique attributes alongside its multi-faceted cultures make it the perfect destination for all kinds of tourists from all over the world; from couples, to lone riders, to abundant families and friends. About 700.000 people inhabit Penang Island, of which

This notable diversity within the citizens of the state resonates throughout the culture and ambiance that flourishes in every aspect of this oriental pearl that once again opens up its gates wide to the West once again. The beautiful state of Penang is located at the intersection of Asia’s great kingdoms and Europe's most powerful colonial empires throughout history. The island is approximately 285 square kilometers in size and is situated ex-
actly on the northwest side of exotic Peninsular Malaysia. Penang has long served as the sole link between Asia’s two halves and as an extremely important outlet to the markets of Europe and the Middle East. Penang embraces modernity while never forgetting to retain its traditions and old world charm creating a fascinating fusion of East and West. These are once again, strongly reflected in its harmonious multiracial populace and well-preserved heritage buildings. The easy going lifestyle of Penang is a result
of the melting pot of cultures, religions and food. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of George Town in particular, is a total fusion of Chinese, Malay, Indian and other races, evidence of which is apparent everywhere, from its fusion cuisine to the blend in architectural styles. Penang offers activities of all sorts, and for everyone; from hanging around at the beach to walks alongside irreplaceable sights on the island. The fascinating culture is complemented by golden sun kissed beaches and serene
deep blue seas. Penang's abundant tropical atmosphere, and its palmfringed beaches and unconventional fishing villages; its mountainous jungles and farms that are growing exotic produce such as nutmeg and durian are the icing to this very delicious cake. One would have to search really far and wide to find an island blessed with as many natural attractions as Penang; a truly tropical paradise that offers something for everyone, from historical tours to re-encounter the past and nature park enthusiasts to those just
wanting to relax and disconnect on a warm, sandy, sun-drenched beach. The island offers numerous hotels and resorts that range from luxurious decadency such as the famous Eastern & Oriental Hotel to local bed and breakfast charm for a budget fit to the average traveler. Most of the accommodation options are located in and around the city of George Town and around the towns of Batu Ferringhi and Tanjung Bungah, well connected beautiful places, that one enjoys to simply stroll around in them.

Another one of Penang’s heartwarming and palette pleasing appeals is its famous fusion gastronomy. Penang is especially known as the best place to enjoy wonderful local dishes; and it is rightfully seen as Malaysia’s food capital enticing travelers from all over the world not only with the alluring force of its marvelous beaches and historical impetus but also with its scrumptious, one-of-a-kind native delicacies. Assam Laksa is one of the very famous Penang dishes. It is a spicy noodle soup with sour undertones that are ravishing to the taste buds; it is a poached mackerel that stews in the broth with tamarind, chilies, lemongrass and shrimp paste topped with a generous amount of rice vermicelli. Another famous musttry dish is Mee Goreng, thin yellow noodles fried with onions, garlic, shallots, and an option of either prawns or chicken, chili, cabbage, egg, and special pickles that give it an out of this world taste. Although this dish was once Chinese Chow Mein, it has evolved to an essential Malay dish that one cannot overlook while in Penang. The list of noodle dishes is endless. Nasi Lemak is a famous rice dish with lots of little side dishes to accompany the main substance; the rice which is cooked in coconut milk and placed on a banana leaf so the aroma of it penetrates the grains of rice. Roti Canai is a dish which descends from Indian cuisine; a flat bread which tends to have different shapes and which has a side dish of delicious curry sauce to dip in. The Roti, or flat bread is also known to be a sweet dish, enjoyed by the younger generation with sugar or a sweet syrup.

Penang is one of the most industrialized states in Malaysia, however, its capital George Town has still wisely managed to retain much of its old world charms. George Town was the first town in the then Malaya to receive city status, by a royal charter approved by Queen Elizabeth II, just before the country finally achieved independence. For that reason, you often hear it being called the City of George Town, especially among the locals. George Town is located on a cape to the northeast of the island. The very tip of the cape is the site of the earliest British settlement, when the island was opened as the first British trading port at the end of the 18th century. Today a lasting reminder of British occupation stands there in the form of Fort Cornwallis, one of the must-sees in the island. History shapes this state so much, that even the name "Penang" itself comes from the colonial days while under the British Empire until 1957. The pronunciation of the original Malay name of the island would be Pulau Pinang, but this name has almost been erased and it no longer applies since today even the locals still call it Penang while speaking in English.

ith eight shipyards across northern Germany, Lürssen is a firmly established institution in a region renowned for shipbuilding of the highest quality. They build, repair, and modernize yachts, naval vessels, cruise ships and other vessels for discerning owners the world over. Lürssen shipyards have built not only the longest yacht in the world,

the AZZAM at 180.5 meters but also the largest measured by water displacement, the Dilbar. Considered to be the most expensive luxury yacht, with an estimated price of US$ 600 million, Dilbar also has the largest swimming pool at 180 cubic metres and its 30,000kw diesel-electric power plant is thought to be the most powerful ever fitted to a private yacht, giving her a cruising speed of 22.5 knots. These aren’t mere Superyachts; they’re
Gigayachts. Four generations of Lürssen’s have steered the company’s growth since its inception in 1875, starting with Friedrich Lürssen. After training as a boatbuilder, Friedrich wanted to join the boatyard of his father, Lüder Lürssen. Lüder however advised his son to start a yard of his own, saying a single company would be insufficient to support two families. On June 27, 1875,
Friedrich Lürssen
24-year-old Friedrich did as his father suggested and set up his boatbuilding yard. His first vessel demonstrated his trademarks: originality and high quality. Friedrich’s shipyard thrived. Lürssen initially only built racing rowboats for local oarsmen, but orders started coming in from all over Germany. Word spread that Lürssen boats were not only beautifully designed but were also outstanding in their precision
workmanship. And, their lightweight construction meant they placed well in regattas. In 1886 Lürssen built the world’s first motorboat. The 6-meter REMS was commissioned by the inventor and engine manufacturer Gottlieb Daimler, of Mercedes Benz fame. Gottlieb needed a boat to put his new engine through its paces. Always open to new ideas, Friedrich became very excited about
the project and designed and built the boat without delay. Friedrich’s only son Otto joined the firm as a partner in 1907. As a shipbuilding engineer, he combined tried and trusted craftsmanship with new technical expertise, improving on past methods. This approach, handed down over the decades, remains to this day the essence of Lürssen’s unique quality and innovative spirit.

In 1925 the company reached two significant milestones: Lürssen built its 10,000th vessel, a 14-meter wooden motor yacht while at the same time celebrating the company’s 50th anniversary. Sadly, just seven years later, fiftytwo-year-old Otto Lürssen abruptly died. A bitter loss for the shipyard and the entire industry. His wife, Frieda, the strong-willed daughter of a captain of a large cruise ship, fills the gap and takes over the Lürssen yard. The third generation of Lürssen’s took the helm in 1962. Frieda, who had led the company with great perseverance and technical expertise, handed over responsibility for the firm to her sons Gert and Fritz-Otto. In 1971, legendary yacht designer Jon Bannenberg collaborated with Lürssen, the first of many collaborations, delivering the 71 meter Carinthia Vl to Austrian retail moguls Helmut and Heidi Horten. To this day, the Carinthia Vl remains contemporary in styling and is a precursor to today’s Lürssen luxury yachts. The yacht is also seen as a pivotal project in Lürssen’s history, as before Carinthia VI, the shipyard was best known for naval vessels and warships. Indeed, the company’s illustrious history bled into the Superyacht’s style, giving her the distinctive battleship-style look still recognisable today.

Gert’s son, Friedrich Lürssen, joined the company in 1977. He worked his way through all departments of the shipyard and soon assumed a senior position. Nine years later, Fritz-Otto’s son, Peter Lürssen, joined the company in 1987. Peter’s background included studying shipbuilding and industrial engineering in Germany and business administration in the United States. Peter and Friedrich become the 4th generation of Lürssen’s to run the company.
In 1988, ninety percent of the company’s business involved Navy contracts. Peter and Friedrich decided to devote half of their production capacity to building large yachts and set up a new yacht building division dedicated to this market. In 1997, again working with yacht designer Jon Bannenberg, Lürssen built and handed over the 97-meter mega yacht LIMITLESS to her owner, Les Wexner, an American businessman. Wexner is chairman emeritus of L Brands corporation, best known for its brand Victoria’s Secret.
While acquiring three additional shipyards between 2004 and 2013, Lürssen continued to build larger and larger yachts. Their client list is a literal who’s who of royalty & the rich. Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen was a client, having commissioned the 126-meter Octopus. This Lürssen stands out as the world’s largest explorer yacht. Octopus is used for true scientific expeditions, such as when Paul Allen and his crew discovered a long-lost WWII shipwreck in 2015.

Accommodating 36 guests with a crew of 84, the Dilbar is owned by Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov. Usmanov is one of Russia’s richest men and is the majority shareholder of MetalloInvest and he owns Mail. ru. Russia’s number one Internet company. Lürssen’s most significant commission to date is the massive 180.5-meter AZZAM. A Conversation with Entrepreneur & Philanthropist
Bill Heinecke - Redux (Editor’s Note: One of our most popular interviews ever was with Bill Heinecke, which appeared in our December 2017 issue. We are pleased to present it to you once again with updated information.) Bill Heinecke is a business legend. Heinecke moved to Bangkok in 1963 at age 14 with his family, having already lived in Japan, Hong Kong, and Malaysia. Bill attended the International School in Bangkok but was more interested in go-karting than studying. He approached the editor of the now-defunct Bangkok World, asking if he could write a column on go-karts. The editor agreed on one condition; young Bill had to also sell advertising for the newspaper. Earning a commission on his sales, within months he was making more money than the newspaper’s full-time sales staff. At the age of 17 he was promoted to advertising manager of the paper. After completing high school, Bill borrowed $1,200 USD’s from a money lender and used the money to buy rags, mops, and buckets. He then set about getting contracts to clean commercial office buildings in Bangkok. In 1967 he founded Minor Holdings. “Minor,” being a nod to his youth. Fast forward in time and from that $1,200 borrowed, Bill, now a billionaire has built MINOR International (MINT), into a global powerhouse with 2019 revenue of almost 4 Billion USD and employing more than 85,000 people. MINT is a hotel owner, operator and investor with a portfolio of over 78,000 rooms across more than 530 hotels, resorts and serviced suites under the Anantara, AVANI, Oaks, Tivoli, Elewana, NH Collection, NH Hotel, nhow, Marriott, Four Seasons, St. Regis, Radisson Blu, and Minor International brands. Today, Minor Hotels’ hotel and spa portfolio spans across 57 countries in the Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, the Indian Ocean, Europe, and the Americas.

In 1980 Bill introduced pizza to Asians. Experts predicted that Asian’s would never take to the Western faire, but Bill added local ingredients and quickly became Asia’s pizza king. He initially bought the franchise from Pizza Hut, but when the parent company tried to restrict his other restaurant franchise efforts, Bill struck off on his own and started Pizza Company. Pizza Company quickly went on to dominate the pizza business in Thailand. Always the entrepreneur, Bill spied a related opportunity and moved into dairy production, churning out cheese to top all those pies with an annual output of over 1,000 tons of mozzarella for his Thailand Pizza parlors alone. Bill took out other franchises and purchased businesses growing MINT into one of Asia’s largest restaurant companies with over 2,300 outlets operating in 26 countries. Brands include; The Pizza Company, Jiang Bian Cheng Wai, The Coffee Club, Thai Express, Benihana, Bonchon, Swensen’s, Sizzler, Dairy Queen, Burger King & SSP Thailand plus it operates four food manufacturing plants. MINT is also one of Thailand’s largest distributors of lifestyle brands focusing primarily on fashion and household products with over 480 locations. Its brands include Brooks
Brothers, Esprit, Radley London, Etam Paris, Charles & Keith, among others, and is a contract manufacturer of household products. Other businesses in Bill’s empire include MJETS, Thailand’s largest jet charter provider as well as a large property development business building residential and commercial properties. In 2015 Bill was honored with the “Real Estate Personality of the Decade Award” by the editors of Property Report Magazine at their annual Thailand Property Awards gala dinner. The award was given for being “Consistently influential and instrumental over the past decade in not only shaping Thai real estate but also promoting Thai brands in the global arena,” Bill became a naturalized Thai citizen in 1991. In addition to being an entrepreneurial businessman, he is a jet pilot & race car driver. He is also a published author having written “The Entrepreneur: 25 Golden Rules For the Global Business Manager.” Bill married his high school sweetheart Kathy in 1968 and they have two sons, John and David. Philanthropy is well entrenched with the Heinecke’s. According to Kathy, “Bill and I feel very strongly about giving back to the people and country of Thailand who have been so good to us. Our primary charity
is the Roy E. Heinecke Scholarship Fund, which was set up in the name of Bill’s father. The foundation so far has provided education to over 850 under-privileged children from nursery school to the University level.” Another way Bill and Kathy give back is through their Founder’s Day program. On Bill’s birthday, June 4th, all the different divisions of the company, including international divisions make it a charity day or take on a charity project. The Heinecke’s are also well known for their love of Elephants and the donations they make yearly. Russ Downing, Managing Director of HOT Hua Hin Property, recently had the delightful pleasure of visiting with Bill at his Bangkok penthouse to discuss his incredible life and business career and shares that conversation here. RD: Bill, I once asked your wife Kathy how you stay on top of all the businesses you have, while at the same time continually expanding your empire? She said it was due to the many good people you have working with you. Watching you accept the Thailand Property Award’s Real Estate Personality of the Decade in 2015, your speech was all about the talent you had at Minor and recognizing their efforts, not

yours. Do you feel that your ability to lead people was a God-given talent, or was it something you had to learn and nurture? BH: I believe I have had an entrepreneurial spirit since a very young age, but I also believe that leaders are made not born. I like to lead by example and by making sure to always hire people smarter than me! This has grown organically through the necessity of building a number of business from scratch, at the same time. That being said, entrepreneurship is an ever-evolving passion of mine. A few years ago, I published a book called The Entrepreneur, which has since been reprinted and translated into many languages, to share some insights into the key lessons I have learnt over the years. RD: You were quoted in an interview saying, “Being structured about my day, setting clear and realistic goals has definitely helped me to manage and develop the Minor Group from a small advertising agency and office cleaning company, to a public corporation that employs
70
HOT Magazine
over 12,000 people”. That quote was obviously quite a while ago since you now employ over 85,000. Do you still feel the same way about setting goals, and do you continue to do it daily? BH: Great discipline is needed to extract the most out of each day, week, weekend and month. A good routine is a sound place to start. In terms of goals, the key is to look at things in the context of a very small idea. If it works, it’s easier to expand and grow. But you must first be successful. To build a wall, you start with the first brick and then carefully add more bricks. Sometimes you can’t visualize how big a wall you are building. If I had visualized the wall that is our group today, I wouldn’t have known where to begin. I don’t think too far ahead. I feel sometimes that if you think too far ahead then you get caught up in the planning rather than the doing. RD: It’s been reported that Warren Buffet reads five to six hours a day, everything from daily newspapers to annual reports. Is reading a significant part of your day, and can you walk us through what an
average business day is like for you from start to finish? BH: I wake every day at 7am and am in the car reading the Asian Wall Street Journal and two other local newspapers by 7:45am. I feel out of the loop if I don’t know what’s going on in Thailand, Asia and the world by the time I’m at my desk each morning. I also read the Asian Financial Times and Time as well as numerous other trade publications to keep up to date about the market and any news which may impact my businesses. At work I may take up to 50 calls every day and send over 100 emails. By 7:30pm my driver will be taking me home for dinner with Kathy and I use that time to finish off any other projects. Email and using a Dictaphone have become crucial tools to ensure that everything gets seen to. I also make a point of speaking directly to each of my key executives at least once a day. RD: You founded MJETS, a jet charter company, in the late 90’s and have grown it to be the number one Jet Charter company in the Kingdom. You currently have Gulfstream’s and
Cessna jets in your stable, including the Cessna Citation X, the fastest non-military aircraft available. How much has having your own fleet of jets helped to fuel your company’s expansion globally and when was the last time you flew commercial? BH: Travelling on our private jets has helped shortened our executives’ much valued time and allowed more flexibility to be able to travel at a short notice or to take off at a convenient time for us. It definitely helps with our businesses which is now global. I do fly commercial at times – for example to the US or Europe. RD: You’ve been quoted as saying that the number one quality you look for in all your staff is passion. A while back we had the pleasure of interviewing New York Times Best Selling Author Janet Attwood who wrote the Passion Test. She works with such luminaries as the Dalai Lama, Sir Richard Branson, Stephen Covey, Nobel Laureate F. W. deKlerk amongst many others. I asked her what she gleaned from spending time with them. She said that these giants had trained their minds to consistently choose in favor of the things that have the greatest meaning for them and they don’t put their attention on limiting beliefs. Because of this, they are powerful beyond measure. And by just being who they are they teach others how to be more fearless and resolute in following their dreams and passions. Firstly, did you ever have limiting beliefs, and would you say “passion” is the driving force behind Minor’s success? BH: If you don’t enjoy your work, you won’t invest the time and energy needed to make it a success. I don’t know of any successful entrepreneurs who consider their work boring. Never work for just money or power, it won’t satisfy your soul. Believe in your business more than anyone else. In the early days, I was able to overcome most of my shortcomings through the sheer passion and enthusiasm I brought to my work. If you’re passionate about what you do, you’ll feel as if you never worked a day in your life! I always believe that things can get done one way or another and so I ‘drive’ my people to achieve our goals. This is one of the reasons why we have a ‘driveculture’ at Minor.

RD: Your mother, Connie, once told me that the way you decompress is by going on road trips, driving one of the many classic cars that you have spread around the world. How many cars do you own currently, do you have a favorite and what country is it in? BH: Yes, correct. I have around 33 cars in Europe and USA. My favorite is an LwB Ferrari California Spyder, 1956. RD: As a follow-up, do you still own Clint Eastwood’s Ferrari, and are there any cars that you are currently pursuing? BH: A collector will always keep one eye open for any reasonable new purchases and yes I still have Clint’s Ferrari. RD: Speaking of Connie, what values did she and your dad Roy instill in you as you were growing up that you feel helped propel you to where you are today? BH: Persistence and never giving up on my dreams and passions. RD: As any self-respecting Billionaire would, in addition to multiple homes, jets, luxury and classic cars, you also have boats, A Major Affair that’s 30 metres and A Minor Affair, which is 20 metres. With your intensely busy schedule, do you get to slip on your deck shoes very often and do you see any bigger purchases on the horizon? BH: Whenever I can. Over last Songkran, I was with the family sailing in the Andaman Islands. RD: A keen advocate of corporate social responsibility, you and your family established the Roy Heinecke Foundation, supporting underprivileged children’s education in Thailand and to date have sponsored the education for thousands of students. You also have a profound interest in looking after Thailand’s national symbol, the elephant. You launched the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation, and have, for the last seventeen years, put on and hosted The King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament & then the Elephant Boat Races and River Festival, charity events that have raised millions of dollars for the betterment of elephants. Why did you choose elephants as a cause and can you tell us about Founder’s Day?
72
HOT Magazine
BH: Having lived in Thailand for many years, Thai culture is very close to my heart, and elephants are one of the greatest enduring symbols of this beautiful country. I have a deep respect for these beautiful creatures, and through GTAEF and the Elephant Camp at Anantara Golden Triangle, we’re playing a vital role in their protection, as well as helping to create a better environment for future generations to enjoy these ‘gentle giants’. On my birthday, June 4th, my employees used to bring me gifts and flowers every year. Whilst I appreciated their kind generosity, I strongly felt they would be better spending their money to do something more useful for others.
So, we came up with a policy of no birthday gifts, but all Minor Employees, from Executives to the maids, would instead need to go and do something productive to help the community. This is how Minor Founder’s Day came about. It is now known as a day of good deeds where staff from Australia to Zambia go out to help give something back to the local communities. RD: Finally, Bill, you are in a small club of individuals who have achieved remarkable things in their lifetime, which must be immensely gratifying. Looking back, over all of your years, what would you say has been your happiest day, and what made it so?
BH: My happiest day is probably yet to come but every day is a happy day for me doing the work that I love and am passionate about. My happiest moments are those spent with the family, and knowing that we have had so much quality time together. Time is a luxury one can’t get back so it needs to be spent wisely. True happiness doesn’t come from getting everything you want, but from being content with what you have. RD: Thank you Bill
