B GRIMM Celebrates 140 Years of Doing Business In The Kingdom

B

.Grimm was founded in Thailand in 1878 when German pharmacist Bernhard Grimm and his Austrian partner, Erwin Mueller, started a chemist's shop, the Siam Dispensary, on Oriental Avenue off New Road. The shop, one of the earliest incorporated businesses in the country, prospered and it was soon appointed official pharmacist to the Thai Royal family. As early as 1900, the company had secured partnerships

with global heavyweights like Siemens Corporation. In 1903, Adolf Link was hired as a manager to help expand the growing business. After King Chulalongkorn returned from his grand tour in Europe, he began putting in place measures to modernize the country to bring it more in line with European nations. Following the outbreak of World War I, Link, as a German national, had all his assets seized on orders of the British government and was sent with his wife, Erma, and two

children, Herbert and Gerhard, to concentration camps in India. The Links had much credibility in Thailand and they knew the Thais hadn’t taken away their assets on their own initiative. They returned to Thailand after the war ended in 1920. In 1928, HRH Prince Bhanurangrsi built on his property the new premises for the company at Wang Burapha and Their Majesties King Prajadhipok and Queen Rambhai Barni presided over the opening of the new offices.

Herbert Link reopened the company in Thailand in 1949, while brother and partner Gerhard remained in Germany to help expand the B.Grimm name in Europe. In 1953, Gerhard Link was also appointed Thailand's honorary consul and later its consul general in Hamburg. Over the next decade, the brothers expanded the business so that by 1964 it included engineering and equipment for healthcare, power generation, telecommunications, air conditioning and mechanical

engineering. The company’s new office and warehouse on New Petchaburi Road was opened by HRH the Princess Mother in January 1967. In 1975, Herbert’s wife, Alma, was bestowed the title of Khunying by HM the King in recognition of her tireless work for various charitable foundations. She was the first foreign woman to receive such an honor in Thailand. In 1988, Dr Gerhard Link’s son Harald Link expanded B.Grimm into

power generation, manufacturing and real estate, and also forged joint ventures with some of the world’s largest corporations. Harald Link, who had been raised in Germany and had graduated from the University of St. Gallen Business School, had joined his uncle Herbert in Thailand in 1978 to help manage the growing business. He moved to Thailand with his wife, Princess Assunta of Liechtenstein, descendant of Prince Aloys of Liechtenstein.

In 1992, the company built new factories and work also began on another new head office. Soon afterwards, B.Grimm expanded into bio-diesel production and the lifestyle industry. The company has since rapidly expanded its power generation operations which now accounts for 70% of total revenues. On June 10th at 5pm Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously presided at the opening of the exhibition “In the Kingdom, 140th Anniversary of B.Grimm.” The Princess was greeted upon her arrival by Adolf Link’s descendent, Dr Harald Link, Chairman of B.Grimm, and his family. More than 1,000 people consisting of dignitaries, ambassadors, leading businesspeople, and distinguished guests joined in to celebrate B.Grimm’s 140 years. The event was in collaboration with the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) and was aimed at raising funds to support BACC’s operation. The exhibition consisted of two sections. The first, the “Postal History of Thai-German Relations and 140 Years of B.Grimm” on the wall along the 7th-floor ramp leading to the 8thfloor Main Gallery showing more

than 50 original historical postal documents dating back over 160 years and depicting Thai-German friendship and diplomatic relations as well as B.Grimm’s business in Siam since 1878. The historical postal items consisting of envelopes, seals, stamps, postal stationeries and picture postcards are empirical evidences indicating the existence of people in history while clearly reflecting the image of the past, political changes, communication and social conditions of the two nations from the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) to the reign of King Bhumibol (Rama IX). The second section was the Contemporary Art Exhibition featuring works inspired by B.Grimm’s philosophy of “Doing business with compassion” and its ongoing social contributions related to Education, Music, Environment and Gross National Happiness. In addition to the artwork and memorabilia, guests were treated to a performance by the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra.

Khun Sumanee Guna Kasem Check’s Into The Amari Hua Hin On Monday June 18th, Bangkok based high society celebrity Khun Sumanee Guna Kasem and her entourage of 9 checked into the Amari Hua Hin. Joining Khun Sumanee was her son, Khun Vachiramond “Pu” Gunakasemtanawat. Khun Phanuphan Buasuang, the General Manager of the Amari was on hand to present her with flowers prior to her departure for the 2018 Mister National Universe Competition for which she is the honorary Chairwoman. While staying at the Amari, Khun Sumanee sought out the name of their Chef Khun Pichit Plaibua so she could personally thank him for the delicious vegetarian meals served to her room. Even though she has a condominium in Hua Hin, it had been over 20 years since Khun Sumanee had visited the Royal Resort City. In addition to owning a home she was also a major land owner before selling her land where the BluPort Resort Mall now sits to its developers. When asked why it had been so

many years since visiting, she said that she works during the week overseeing her many businesses along with her foundation and that on the weekends she likes to Ballroom dance with her friends so there just wasn’t time. In addition to her business’s and charitable work Khun Sumanee is also well known for being one of the most prolific collectors of antiques in Thailand. Her collection’s value has been estimated in the billions of baht. The world’s high profile auction houses know her well and she once famously outbid the Sultan of Brunei on a piece she had to have for her collection. Khun Sumanee’s father was a Thai Diplomat which gave her the ability to meet many interesting people and go to exciting places but it wasn’t always that way. She remembers living through the Second World War as a young child in Penang, Malaysia. She saw war as a child and had to grow up very quickly. During this time she remembers spending one whole week underground in a tiny hand-made bunker with very little to eat. She

said, “For me, at that age, it was both exciting and terrifying.” Khun Sumanee’s husband, Pracha, was also a diplomat and they were posted to many interesting places around the world. She says she loved every country they were posted too however her favorite was America where for six years her husband was Thailand’s permanent representative to the United Nations. She commented, “Normally, an Ambassador would spend 4 years at one post, but we stayed 6 years in what was then known as the capital city of the world, New York. I can simply say that it was the most exciting place to live, full of interest, always elegant, growing and much more formal than today. If you can picture the formality and elegance of a day gone by such as the reception scene in the movie My Fair Lady… always exquisite and total class.” While in New York Khun Sumanee got to know many icons of the day including Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis and Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the Moon.

HOT AROUND HUA HIN Upon giving birth to her son, King Rama lX named their son Pramond and in later years the King sponsored him to become a Monk. Educated in America, her son returned to Bangkok with a master’s degree and began importing luxury cars into Thailand. He then went on to purchase land and develop condominiums in Sukhumvit and was also a three time elected democratic politician in Lad Prao, Bangkok. A few years before her husband passed away they set up the Maneemoncha charity project which is a combination of both of their names. The foundation is primarily designed to further education, knowledge & experience plus provide scholarships for the less fortunate of the younger generation. The family said these issues were important to support because they believed they are the most necessary to further Thailand in a successful and prosperous way. As Khun Sumanee shared, “I was lucky in many ways as a child, I acknowledge that, and I wish to share my fortunes in a positive and respectful way. My father always said ‘knowledge is the greatest treasure’ and this is so true.” An animal lover like her father, the foundation also looks after 800 homeless dogs and cats.

real star of the night. Campari, Italy’s iconic red apéritif, is the key defining ingredient in a Negroni as stated by the prestigious IBA Official Drink List. It was around the year 1919 in Florence when Count Camillo Negroni contemplated ordering an Americano cocktail but decided it was time for a change. He requested it with a touch of gin instead of soda, inspired by his last trip to London and its prevalent gin scene. The bartender was pleased

to honour Count Camillo Negroni’s request and added an orange garnish rather than the lemon wedge of the Americano to signify the new drink he had created. In Florence, the Count’s ‘usual’ became known as Count Negroni’s Americano, or the “Americano with a touch of gin”, but whatever it was referred to as back then, the Negroni was born. The Negroni is now one of the most famous contemporary classic cocktails. Anywhere you go in the world, you

will find a mixologist who can make you the iconic Negroni. The original recipe, of equal parts of Campari, Red Vermouth and London Dry gin, is almost a century old and continues to be enjoyed today. All proceed from the event were donated to the renowned Foundation for the Deaf under The Royal Patronage of Her Majesty the Queen.

Air Asia’s Tony Fernandes, Ripping Up The Rule Book

O

n May 18th, the inaugural flight of Air Asia’s new route, Kuala Lumpur, Hua Hin & back, flew in to Hua Hin with much fanfare. Disembarking guests were greeted by Thai dancers, the Mayor of Hua Hin and a terminal full of dignitaries. An interesting story, but, an even greater story is that of Anthony “Tony” Fernandes. Tony is the founder of Air Asia and is one of the best-known airline chiefs in the world. He’s revered for taking Asia’s first lowcost airline up from near-bankruptcy to a company with more than 7,000 employees and a $2 billion valuation. For nine years in a row, AirAsia has won awards for being the world’s best no-frills airline by Skytrax Awards, dubbed the “Oscars” of the Aviation Industry. The Airline operates scheduled domestic and international flights to more than 165 destinations spanning 25 countries. In 2001, Fernandes was a music industry magnate for Warner Music with no airline experience. One evening he was sitting in a bar and happened to notice a television interview with Stelios Haji-Ioannou, the billionaire founder of the wildly successful, no-frills carrier EasyJet. He was riveted. “I [just] loved airports,” Fernandes says. “I thought they were happy places, and I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool to own an airline? ” Fernandes decided he, too, could build a low-budget airline. Advisors told Fernandes to buy an existing airline rather than develop one from scratch, and soon a little-known airline called AirAsia caught his eye. Owned by the Malaysian government, it had just two aircraft, a staff of 250 and debts of more than $11 million. Along with that debt burden was a guarantee that the airline’s parent company, DRBHicom, had made to GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS), potentially blocking a deal.

26

HOT Magazine

In order to close the deal, Fernandes needed GECAS to drop the guarantee. He decided to cold call Mike Jones, a director at GECAS in Singapore, and the two met at the airport to chat over a cup of coffee. “Take a risk on me,” the entrepreneur told him. The risks were obvious. Fernandes was not only an unknown quantity, but conventional wisdom at the time also suggested no-frills airlines wouldn’t work in Asia like they did in Europe and the United States. Flying at the time was considered something only for the affluent, and it was unclear whether average consumers would purchase low-cost tickets. Yet to Jones, Fernandes displayed the boldness necessary for a business

that deals with breathtakingly high numbers. (A decade later, Fernandes would make one of the largestever single orders for commercial aircraft in history, buying 200 aircraft from Airbus with a list value of $18 billion.) “He had a very strong vision for what he wanted the airline to be,” Jones says. “He had a huge amount of energy.” After more meetings with GECAS managers in the U.S., GECAS agreed to drop its guarantee, allowing the former music executive to buy AirAsia for the token sum of one ringgit (about US$0.26 at the time) with US$11 million worth of debts. Fernandes turned the company around, producing a profit in 2002 and launching new routes from its hub in Kuala Lumpur, undercutting former monopoly operator Malaysia Airlines with promotional fares as low as 1 ringgit. In 2003, AirAsia

launched its first international flight to Bangkok. Fernandes mortgaged his home and used all his savings to help start to pay off the company’s debt. He then went to GECAS again to help him lease a handful of secondhand aircraft to grow AirAsia’s fleet. “That was the making of AirAsia,” Fernandes says. Few people know that airlines don’t own many of the airplanes they fly. In fact, they lease around 40 percent of their fleets on average today. The number of leased planes was less than 1 percent some 50 years ago. The trend has taken off because it leaves airlines with extra capital to operate the business, and it spreads more risk to the lessor. The model is a bit like leasing a car — especially as technologies change, an airline might want the option to upgrade some of its aircraft sooner than a plane’s typical 25-year-lifespan.

HOT Magazine

27

It certainly worked for Fernandes. Within a year of buying AirAsia and subsequently growing his fleet, he’d cleared all the company’s debts thanks partially to a growing traveling class in Asia. In 2016, an estimated 100 million Asians took their first plane ride. And while Fernandes now has the capital to buy jets directly from Airbus, he chose to sit down with Jones and the GECAS team in late 2016 to discuss leasing some airplanes again. That initial meeting over coffee was not only a catalyst to building one of the world’s most successful airlines, it provided an important lesson for Fernandes too. “In my whole life, any email that comes to me I always take it very seriously,” he says. “I learned a little bit of that from Mike Jones because he didn’t fob me off. You never know what can come from it.”

28

HOT Magazine

Fernandes was born in 1964 in Kuala Lumpur. The seeds of his entrepreneurialism were sown early on. “One of my business heroes would have to be my mom,” he explains. “She brought Tupperware to Malaysia, and I grew up watching her sell the containers and hold Tupperware parties. She could sell ice to an Eskimo.” He was educated in the UK, graduating from the London School of Economics in 1987. Soon after that, he got his first taste of the blend of accountancy and dynamic business, working at Virgin Atlantic as an auditor, then becoming financial controller for Richard Branson’s Virgin Records from 1987 to 1989. But his interest in general management, and his ambition, was already evident. Back in Malaysia – and still comfortably in his twenties – he became MD of the local Warner Music Group business, rising to South East Asian regional vice president by 1992. That all ended when Time Warner merged with AOL in 2001. And it left the still-young Fernandes with the burning question: what next? “I’d wanted to own an airline for a long time,” he says. “At 12 years old, I was sent to boarding school in the UK, which was terribly far away from my family in Malaysia. I was always longing to visit home, but every time I called my parents, they told me it was too expensive. So I dreamt of someday owning an airline so I could fly whenever I wanted to.” Fernandes already knew it was possible to rip up the rulebook in well-established industries and create something that really served customers’ needs. When low-cost airlines began to make a dent on the incumbent carriers – companies like SouthWest in the US and EasyJet and RyanAir in Europe – it became clear that there was a real opportunity to realise his boyhood dream. Tony’s advice for entrepreneurs looking to ride the wave is simple: “Believe the unbelievable, dream the impossible, never take no for an answer,” he concludes. “It doesn’t matter what your job is, just believe in yourself and go for your dreams.”

of the property and facilities. He and wife May have been developing the farm side of the business for the last 7 years. The concept sounds simple enough - produce food and products through sustainable, organic agriculture, using only local manpower with a no fuel farm policy. That’s correct – no tractors or other farm machinery here! Yet the farm has been providing specialist organic vegetables, fruit, herbs and preserved products to the Chefs of elite restaurants in Bangkok and Hua Hin for the last 5 year. James, May and their farm team continue adding to their offering as these elite Chefs become more engaged and understand what this enterprise can provide. Guests to The Boutique Farmer homestay are actually encouraged to wander around the property, and we saw a multitude of produce from, figs and mulberries to hot houses full of cherry tomatoes; rows of corn, garden beds of eggplant, cabbage, lettuce of several varieties, cucumber and edible flowers. In the kitchen garden: microgreens; fennel; mustard leaf; and herbs including flat and curl parsley; purple basil

(heritage); thyme; oregano; as well Thai herbs. It took me back to my grandmother’s garden from my childhood - food grown with love to be shared with family and friends. This garden, while on a more significant scale, seems to have a similar ethos to my grandmother! Additional to the onsite produce, the farm also has its own herd of cattle, work exclusively with a local fishing boat for their catch and have a shellfish farm in neighbouring Sam Roi Yot. Nothing comes more than a few kilometres away, and all suppliers are working to the same sustainable philosophy. As James explained to our group, this is one of the critical elements of the whole project – knowing exactly where everything they serve or sell comes from and that it’s all sustainably produced and organic. And on the eating front, unlike most restaurants which have standard menus, they keep cooking to for months (or years) on end – any meal experience at The Boutique Farmer is entirely dependent on

Could we have desserts? Did we have room? After a little time letting our previously course settle, the decision was made – Yes! “Dessert please!” Salted lime sorbet served on a tasty crumb; a warm Chocolate Fondant; and Fig Crumble with rosemary custard – all devoured with delight! That Saturday evening the dining area had every table full – several with returning guests. Service was friendly and efficient. The No Corkage for BYO wine is undoubtedly a great feature and much appreciated by our table. Didn’t BYO, no problems as the farm distils several flavours of their own Gin and Vodka? During our visit, there were two Gins Mulberry or Cucumber & Rosemary, or a Strawberry Mint Vodka. Like everything else at The Boutique Farmers, flavouring of the Vodka and Gins change as the farm produce and seasons dictate.

what’s available from the farm and their local co-operative suppliers – on that day! And that requires some culinary creativity! Thankfully Chef James is no slouch in the kitchen. Initially developing his cooking skills at 3 Michelin Star restaurants in Europe, before spending 4 years as Mick Jagger’s (The Rolling Stones) personal Chef on his Caribbean island. Add to that several years teaching at Le Cordon Bleu Dusit Culinary School in Bangkok and most recently as the General Manager of the original award winning boutique luxury resort on Pak Nam Pran. Chef James marries his creativity and strong Food skills with all that is available on that day to create stimulating and gastronomically exciting menus. For our Saturday evening dinner, we chose the a la carte menu which offered a choice of four appetisers, three salads, four mains and four desserts. There were vegetarian options for every course including desserts, ensuring all tastes were

catered for. There’s even an organic Kids Menu. Our group chose to share appetisers starting with Wild Pork Brawn accompanied by remoulade and topped with baby beets and berries. The gentle bite of the remoulade, the sweet and earthy berries and beets all providing perfect counterpoints to the rich and gelatinous Pork Brawn. The Spicy Sea bass Ceviche with sweet pea guacamole, pomelo and sea grapes was an ideal blend of citrusy seafood with just a touch of chilli heat. The Duck liver Pate was partnered with a fig compote and generous slices of Farm bread. For mains, the Duck Bolognaise served with an extra (confit) duck leg was selected by half our table and the rest chose the Harissa Chicken complemented by sour herb Tabouleh and smokey rich Babaganoush. Both dishes were well received by all. To accompany the mains we chose the Simple Tomato Salad – tomatoes that were still on the vine an hour prior and served directly on a homemade creamy curd. Tomatoes with real flavour and the freshest you can ask for!

The Boutique Farmer offers dinner Friday and Saturday evenings, plus their increasingly famous Sunday Brunch. Brunch happens between 10am and 3pm Sundays and costs 800 baht per person plus service charge. Come hungry as the 6 course brunch is guaranteed to tantalise your taste buds while filling even the hungriest of diners. It’s absolutely worth it.

The Tea Tree Spa,

S

tepping out of the elevator onto the sixth floor, the friendliness of the welcome and the immediately warm ambience allayed any concerns that my visit to the Tea Tree Spa would be anything but relaxing. The floor to ceiling windows covered with translucent blinds softening the light while still providing outstanding views of Khao Takiab and the beach below. The light timber tones of the floor and feature walls add to the comforting vibe. My welcome continued with a cold towel, chilled pandan juice and a delicious morsel of dried tropical fruit while my Greeter had me complete a consultation card with my preferences for the treatment and enquiring about allergies or specific medical issues they needed to be aware of. Having felt like a pampered, I was taking advantage of the Tea Tree Spas ‘Happy Hour’ promotional offer of an hour long Signature Aroma

Warm Oil Massage and Lymphatic Drainage Face Massage. This is one of several Special Offers currently available. The Happy Hour special is open from 12 to 3:00 pm. Having completed the welcome processes, my Greeter ‘Ally’ walked me through the Spa on the way to my treatment room. As we passed through the various zones Ally explained the other services and treatments available. The light timber themed décor, and filtered light continued throughout. Those looking for Nail Treatments have their own area with large leather reclining treatment chairs to relax in a while your therapist takes you through specialist manicures or pedicures. The next zone is dedicated to Foot Massages where therapist work on reflex zones to bring relief from pain, illness and stress by intensely kneading the reflexive points of the feet, to summon an utterly healing experience. There is even a couples Foot Massage

treatment area! These zones all face the windows and the fantastic outlook to Khao Takiab beach and mountain. The view alone, softened by the opaque blinds, is in itself relaxing. We arrived at my treatment room, and I was passed over to my therapist. This room is setup explicitly for the Aroma therapy massage treatments. The lighting subdued, the temperature comfortable, the ambient music suitable and soft - all was in readiness. The room itself felt spacious with treatment tables for two and relaxation spaces as well. But first, my therapist escorted me to the treatments rooms own bathroom with an enormous showered recess and separate WC. A large comfortable cotton robe awaited me along with little slippers. Suitably ready, my therapist went through a foot washing ritual that helped set the scene for what was to follow – caring and attentive while confirming my preferences for the massage.

Comfortably on the massage table, we began. The massage, to me at least, seemed to combine the Traditional Thai practice of pressure to specific points along the body’s meridian lines to release muscle tension, improves joint flexibility and clears energy blockages. This was followed by the gentle and precise application of the warm oil – relaxing lavender for me – and then long gliding strokes with just the right pressure to soothe away any remaining tension, while increasing circulation and soothing any remaining sore muscles. The treatment time seemed to just melt away, as did all my worries and muscle tightness thanks to the sheer professionalism and skill of my therapist. Back in my comfortable clothes, I was ushered into a quiet zone for herbal tea, a hot towel and more of those dried fruit morsels. The quiet area has two, of what seems like, King sized day beds. Certainly big enough for a couple to relax comfortably. In

fact, you probably could fit a small family on one of these day beds, such was their size! Left to my own for a time to just enjoy the tea, and reflect on the deliciousness of the treatment. I felt totally relaxed! Ally returned after a reasonable time to enquire as to my treatment and how I was feeling. She was also gracious enough to take me on an extended tour of the Spa facilities. Specialist treatment rooms for Thai Massage with the more traditional low tables to make it easier for the therapists to get on and off. Treatment room specifically for couples with side by side tables and chill out corners. And the most impressive, a couples treatment room and adjoining bathroom with one of the biggest Jacuzzi Baths I’ve seen. Ally explained this room is used for the ‘Luxury Indulgence Package for Couples’. The package starts with 20 minutes in a Jacuzzi Mineral Bath, followed by a Jasmin Rice Body Scrub, an hour long Swedish massage, and finally the

application of Body Lotion to top off the luxurious treatment. Two hours of togetherness and pampering with your partner and thanks to a monthly promotion running to the end of July, currently only THB 2,500++ which is a 50 percent discount of the usual price. Tea Tree Spa has a comprehensive menu of treatments including full day and two day packages. Spa hours are 10 am to 9:00 pm with the last bookings taken for 7:30pm. L et’s Go,

Kuala Lumpur

K

uala Lumpur is an easy 2 hour flight from Hua Hin and 2 hours and 15 minutes from Bangkok. It is the cultural, financial and economic centre of Malaysia and home to the Parliament of Malaysia, and the official residence of the Malaysian King, Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Commonly known as KL, it is the national capital of Malaysia as well as the largest city in the country. It covers an area of 243 km2 (94 sq mi) and has an estimated population of 1.73 million as of 2016 and is among the fastest growing metropolitan regions in South-East Asia, in

42

HOT Magazine

both population and economic development. When visiting KL one of the must-see sights is the 451 metertall Petronas Twin Towers, a pair of glass-and-steel-clad skyscrapers with Islamic motifs. Petronas Towers were the tallest buildings in the world from 1998 to 2004 and remain the tallest twin towers in the world. The towers were heavily featured in the action-packed scenes of the Movie Entrapment starring Sean Connery and Catherine ZetaJones. Petronas features a double decker skybridge connecting the two towers on the 41st and 42nd

floors, which is the highest 2-story bridge in the world. It is not attached to the main structure, but is instead designed to slide in and out of the towers to prevent it from breaking, as the towers sway several feet towards and away from each other during high winds. It also provides some structural support to the towers in these occasions. The bridge is 170 m (558 ft) above the ground and 58.4 m (192 ft) long, weighing 750 tons. The skybridge is open to all visitors, but tickets are limited to about 1000 people per day, and must be obtained on a first-come, first-served basis. Tower tours are available Tuesday thru Sunday from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

Another recommended sight to see while in KL is the Batu Caves. The limestone forming Batu Caves is said to be around 400 million years old. Some of the cave entrances were used as shelters by the indigenous Temuan people. The caves are one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside India and are dedicated to the Lord Murugan whose large statue stands at the caves entrance. It is the focal point of the Hindu festival of Thaipusam in Malaysia.

HOT MAGAZINE RECOMMEND

Rising almost 100 meters above the ground, the Batu Caves temple complex consists of three main caves and a few smaller ones. The biggest, referred to as Cathedral Cave or Temple Cave, has a very high ceiling and features ornate Hindu shrines. To reach it, visitors must climb a steep flight of 272 steps.

HOT Magazine

43

At the base of the hill are two more cave temples, Art Gallery Cave and Museum Cave, both of which are full of Hindu statues and paintings. A 42.7-metre (140 ft) high statue of Lord Murugan was unveiled in January 2006, having taken 3 years to construct. It is the tallest Lord Murugan statue in the world. While in KL we also suggest you stroll Merdeka Square which is Malaysia’s Independence Square. It was here the Union Flag was lowered and the Malayan flag hoisted for the first time at midnight on the 31st of August 1957. Since then, Merdeka Square has been the usual venue for the annual Merdeka Parade, Malaysia’s National Day Parade. Merdeka Square sits in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building which were the government offices of the British colonial administration. Now days they house the offices of the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia and the Ministry of Tourism and Culture of Malaysia. Topped by a shiny copper dome and a 41m high clock tower, it is a major landmark in the city. The clock tower houses a one-ton bell clock that strikes on the hour and half-hour. A 95-metre flagpole, one of the tallest in the world, marks that spot with a flat, round black marble plaque.

And finally, what’s a holiday without a little shopping? Bukit Bintang, stylised as Bintang Walk or Starhill, is the shopping and entertainment district of KL. It encompasses Jalan Bukit Bintang and its immediate surrounding areas. This place has been transformed over the last 5 years to become one of the most trendy and busiest shopping clusters in the city. Street furniture lines the pavements. Upscale cafes, restaurants and clubs continue to open here. On weekends, thousands of locals as well as tourists throng Bintang Walk and its shopping centres. Many major nightlife events take place here such as the New Year's countdown, Merdeka eve celebrations, street concerts and parties. The annual Malaysian F1 Grand Prix pit stop and Guinness St Patrick's Day Celebrations are held here too. Timed right, Air Asia flights to KL are ridiculously low and the two hour flight time passes quickly. For a quick couple of day holiday this city is well worth a visit.

Bumrungrad Health Briefs What to Know About Deep Vein Thrombosis Before Flying Airplane travel is extremely safe but for some people there is a risk of developing deep vein thrombosis. Learn what causes it, its symptoms, and how to avoid it with these tips from Bumrungrad International Hospital.

What is deep vein thrombosis? Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is the formation of blood clots in the deep veins within your body, most often in the legs. The danger with DVT is that the clot can come detached and travel to the lungs and block essential blood flow, which is known as a pulmonary embolism. Immobilization for long periods of time can lead to the development of deep vein thrombosis. This is why sitting on long flights is a concern, particularly for those at risk of developing DVT. People with hereditary diseases in which their blood clots easily, who are pregnant and therefore have increased pressure on their pelvic and leg veins, who have an existing injury to their veins or the adjacent tissue, or who lack mobility due to old age or obesity are at highest risk of developing DVT during a lengthy flight. Deep vein thrombosis symptoms included swelling of the legs with redness, warmth, or tenderness. You may experience symptoms in only one leg and not both. However, DVT may also occur without any obvious symptoms. If a blood clot has occurred and has dislodged itself, it can cause a pulmonary embolism. Symptoms of a blood clot blocking a major lung artery include: chest pain particularly when taking a deep breath or during a cough; shortness of breath; rapid pulse; feeling dizzy or lightheaded; and coughing up blood.

Tips to preventing deep vein thrombosis: There are several simple ways to prevent the onset of deep vein thrombosis while flying.

50

HOT Magazine

Incorporate light exercises and movement during long flights. Get up and walk around when the seatbelt display light is off. While you are in your seat, do neck rolls, arm stretches, and ankle turns. At the very least, move your lower legs by extending them straight out at the knee and then returning them to a bent position several times. Do not cross your legs or arms during the flight as this can restrict blood flow. Take your prescribed medication, particularly if you’ve just had surgery and have been prescribed blood thinners. After speaking with your doctor, you may also want to take aspirin or other similar medication that help prevent clots. Wearing compression stockings or socks while flying is an excellent way to reduce the risk of developing deep vein thrombosis. These come in a variety of pressures (from light to strong) and lengths (from knee high to thigh high). These work by applying pressure that helps move blood upwards to your heart and prevents blood pooling in your lower legs and feet. It significantly reduces leg swelling and, to an extent, lessens blood clotting.

he HOT Magazine team have had the pleasure of staying in many 5-star hotels throughout the Asia Pacific region. Having stayed at several Le Méridien properties we were very much looking forward to our stay at the Le Méridien Kuala Lumpur. The hotel is conveniently situated right next door to KL Sentral, the

The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is just a 28-minute ride away via the KLIA Express at 55 ringgit (450 THB) per person. On our trip to the hotel from the

airport, not knowing how close the hotel was to the train station, we chose to travel by taxi. The Friday rush hour trip took about an hour and with tip was 140 ringgits. On the way back to the airport we took the KLIA Express train which was most convenient and enjoyable. The hotel bellman took us via the newly air-conditioned link connecting the hotel to the train station and showed

The hotel had recently gone thru an extensive renovation which included all 420 rooms. Walking into the lobby, which the P.R. person

told me they call the “Le Méridien HUB,” I noticed a mix of seating arrangements and styles. There are high and low communal tables for guests to choose from, complemented with electronic devices for Power Point presentations. The HUB further builds on Le Méridien brand’s award-winning ‘Arrival Experience’ and coffee culture, which have both been implemented successfully

The suite was 68 square metres, average in size, but being newly renovated it had a very modern yet elegant feel. Looking out their were stunning views of the city and Lake Gardens. The master bedroom had a king size bed fitted with a goose down duvet, which led to wonderful sleeps at night. The cream marble bathroom had a spacious dual sink vanity area, luxurious bathtub and a shower that I rate a 5 out of 5. It had a rain shower overhead, a hand-held sprayer plus two adjustable mid-level spray nozzles. The shower also had a bench seat for when you are enjoying your shower so much you get tired of standing. I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying many club floors over the years and I can honestly say this one was one of the very best. Most evening cocktail hours are two hours in length, theirs was a little more liberal at two and a half hours. What really set them apart however was the food each night, it was outstanding and was provided on a rotational basis by their in-house restaurants; PRIME, Favola, Gastro Sentral & Latest Recipe. We were there for 3 nights and every night the food put out was exceptional, as were the drinks. They offered two different reds and whites plus sparkling, two beers on tap plus a plentiful choice of spirits. On floor 6 the Le Méridien provides an extensive conference and meeting facility. Saturday it all went to the dogs as the guys and entourage headed to Hua Hin’s Rescue Paws Dog Rescue Center for a presentation on the street dog overpopulation and the work that Rescue Paws does. Afterwards, everyone took turns washing and walking some of the adorable canines that call Rescue Paws their temporary home. Sunday saw a little day drinking as the men met up with the Resident Mixologist & GM of Vana Nava Sky, Mr. Ron Ramirez. Ron taught them about cocktailing and set up a competition to see who could make the best Mojito, Blue Margarita and Sangria. From there the frivolity ended and it was all business as each contestant met up with the judges for closed door interviews. Once the stress of the interviews passed it was time to relax and unwind as everyone headed back to Sahwan Boutique Resort for a final dinner together. All day Monday was spent in preparation for the final night show which started at 6pm in the Ballroom of the Holiday Inn Resort Vana Nava Hua Hin. The crowd was filled with beautiful ladies all dressed nicely for the occasion and the excitement was high. Bangkok wine companies Nadin and Vola Twizt were the wine sponsors for the evening adding to the to the merriment of those attending. Honorary Chairwoman Khun Sumanee Guna Kasem arrived with her entourage and was ushered into a private room waiting for the dinner show to begin. Shortly after 7pm the ballroom doors opened and people settled into their seats for dinner and the big show. First off was the National Costume Competition and everyone had their favorites in short order. The judges scores were tallied and Thailand was the victor. It was then time for the opening speeches starting with Khun Sumanee Guna Kasem. Khun Sumanee gave her speech and then called up Mr. Cho Gyi from Myanmar and presented him with a gift while announcing that Cho would be hosting the Inaugural Mister Grand Universe Competition in the Royal City of Mandalay in 2019. Next. Khun Sumanee called Mr. Ferdinand Aberjon to the stage and presented him with a gift while announcing that the 2019 Mister National Universe Competition will be held in the historic Philippine City of Vigan. After the speeches Miss Rebecca Pagan from The Voice Thailand came out and entertained the crowd with several songs.

The noise decibel level in the ballroom then began to spike, caused by the ladies, as the men came out for the swimwear portion of the event for which favorites were had in short order. Things quieted down somewhat as the winner of the Most Photogenic Award was announced, going to Mister Switzerland, Lionel Luthi. Next up the men came out in their formal wear and each had 60 seconds with the microphone to tell the judges and guests about themselves. It was then time to focus on the National Directors with Tanya Siri Vijitsomphong coming on stage to congratulate the Best National Director, Mr. Louis from Puerto Rico. While this was taking place the judge’s scores were being tallied and it was time to announce the top 10. Those making the cut were Indonesia, Philippines, USA, Switzerland, Puerto Rico, Nepal, India, Thailand, Malaysia & Brazil. Each of the 10 men then took turns picking a judge’s name out of a bowl and that judge in-turn picked the question out of a bowl that the contestant had to answer. A few of the questions asked included; If you could travel back in time, who would you like to meet most and why? What is the most beautiful thing you have given to a living person or creature? And, If you had your choice of only being one thing, handsome, rich or intelligent, which would you like to be and why?

With those questions behind them, it was time to announce several more special category awards. The Mister Congeniality Award went to David Aponte from the USA and the People’s Choice Award went to Kenley Filaca from the Philippines. It was then time to narrow the field once again to the top 5. With the crowd shouting out their favorites the top 5 were announced. The top 5 were Brazil, India, Thailand, Malaysia & Nepal. Questions were again asked of the remaining men of which several were; “What is your “core value” that you are proud of? & If you found out that your close friend is in love with the same person as you are, what would you do and why”? With the questions completed and while the judges were making up there minds it was time to give out the last special category award which was for Mister National Universe 2018 Ambassador. The Award went to Kenley Filarca from the Philippines. And then it was time. The judges tallied scores were given to the MC’s and the winners were about to be announced. Second Runner-Up went to Markos Vinicius from Brazil, First RunnerUp went to Natchanon Singlum from Thailand with the Mister National Universe 2018 Grand Winner being Phanendra Prasai from Nepal.

Latest Recipe is the hotel’s Signature Restaurant and wow’s with captivating live-cooking stations offering unusual gastronomic delights. Diners can indulge in popular dishes that are prepared ‘a la minute’ with personalised and individual servings of Malay, Indian, Chinese, Japanese and Western delights. Indulge your sashimi and live-fried tempura cravings at the Japanese counter, individualise your pasta at the Western counter, choose to have Teppanyaki styled prawns, beef, chicken; all while sampling fascinating authentic Malay and Indian dishes. The buffet also boasts two fountains of chocolate and strawberry dips, while the smell of fresh waffles served with ice-cream is sure to put a smile on many faces.

Latest Recipe is also the restaurant serving breakfast each morning offering dishes from around the world. There were almost too many choices, too many decisions to make so early in the morning, starting with what type of coffee to have. In addition to the Le Méridien’s Latest Recipe Restaurant we also dined at Gastro Sentral and Favola. Gastro Sentral is a comfortable restaurant with a classic pub feel. We lunched there and found it’s all-day menu consisted of an array of Continental, Asian and local delights. Finger food and tapas provide delicious alternatives to those who enjoy a light meal. It specializes in boutique beverages and craft beer to accompany its

wide range of scrumptious culinary wonders. They offer a Daily Brunch from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM and a two for one Happy Hour from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM Monday to Friday and 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM Saturday and Sunday. You could easily spend a Saturday or Sunday here eating, drinking, conversing with friends and watching sports on the TV’s. Gastro is open from 11:00 AM to 12:00 AM Sunday to Thursday and 11:00 AM to 1:00 AM Friday & Saturday. On our last night at the Le Méridien we dined at their Favola Italian Restaurant. In 2016 the eatery won the coveted “Best Italian Restaurant” Award by the Time Out Food & Drink Awards KL.

Favola means fable in Italian and your dining experience begins as you walk through the open galleries into a rustic Italian setting reminiscent of the renaissance era. The peeling paint on the walls reflects the glories of the past that has unearthed Venice for many centuries. Carnival masks adorn the walls at Favola, depicting the Carnival festival in Venice which is held annually. In the Venetian culinary tradition, Risotto and seafood has great prominence, somewhat similar to Sardinian food. Here you can Indulge in specialties such as Porcini Mushroom Risotto with Seared Escalope of Foie Gras and Pan-seared Red Mullet. With over 60 dishes of hearty Italian specialties, guests can savour an extensive variety of antipasti in their exciting and unorthodox menu. Epicureans will revel with the flavourful Pumpkin Cream Risotto with Tiger Prawns or the succulent Braised Lamb Shank, which is both delicious and comforting. For a light and fulfilling lunch, one can opt for the delicate yet flavourful Maccheroni with Maguro Tuna for a fresh take on pasta. Those who prefer a more wholesome lunch can indulge in the Homemade Beef Lasagna for a fulfilling meal. The Classic Italian Margherita Pizza with tomato sauce, basil, mozzarella and olive oil, and Classic Gragnano Orecchiette pasta with broccoli, cherry tomatoes, basil sauce, and aged pecorino cheese shaves; are just two of the many choices of vegetarian specialties packed with luxuriant flavour that will have one ordering it again at the first opportunity. There should always be room for dessert and I kept space available so as to sample their Italian Tiramisu, the light and soft traditional version made is made from a secret recipe from 1956 and after tasting I am very pleased the secret got out. The Chef at Favola is Domenico Piras, born in Milan and raised in Sardinia. Chef Domenico's dishes are largely colourful, with the traditional Italian taste. While risotto is Chef's specialty and all-time favourite dish to cook, he is also most passionate about introducing Malloreddus and Fregula, famous pastas from Sardinia. Favola is open for Lunch Monday to Friday from 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM and closed Saturday & Sunday. For Dinner it is open from 6:30 PM to 10:30 PM (Daily) Favola Restaurant Le Méridien Kuala Lumpur 2 Jalan Stesen Sentral, Kuala Lumpur Sentral, Kuala Lumpur, 50470, Malaysia +60 3 2263 7888 www.lemeridienkualalumpur.com

faster trips to and from Bangkok and the international airport. Palm Hills Golf Club and Residence’s has been one of the premier housing developments in Hua Hin for over 20 years. It has the highest density of luxury homes with some of the largest land plots of any development in the city. Most

land plots are one and a half rai, 2400 square meters. The large land plots allow for some very big and expensive haciendas. When talking to Palm Hill’s owners one of the things they frequently mention is the security they have on the development, with many proclaiming it’s the best in Hua Hin.

Here you have the requisite guard station checking cars at the entrance and videoing license plate numbers, but you also have manned guard stations throughout the project. Additionally, there are security guards patrolling in vehicles and golf carts. Hua Hin is by no means a dangerous place but having that extra level of security is comforting.

From an investment perspective, we believe Palm Hills will appreciate in value at a faster rate than almost all developments in Hua Hin in the next few years. With the building boom of residential developments happening between Hua Hin’s airport and Cha Am, the next city to our north, there will be an exponential growth in restaurants, stores and facilities. Soon there will be no delineation between Hua Hin and Cha Am anymore, it will all become one with Palm Hill’s at the near center. Location, location, location, as they say.
