Dear Reader Welcome to Issue 2, Volume 5 of HOT Magazine. This month we start out by taking you to the Palm Bistro Beer and Wine Bar in Hua Hin. This popular eatery is into its sixth year of operation, offering creative quality dishes at reasonable prices. It’s also the place to go for imported craft beers in bottle and draught and some truly enjoyable wines. Have a seat and turn to page 12. Muay Thai, also known as Thai Boxing, is a national sport and cultural martial art of Thailand. Referred to as “The Art of Eight Limbs”, it uses eight points of contact to mimic weapons of war. The hands become the sword and dagger, the shins and forearms hardened to act as armor against blows, the elbow to fell opponents like a heavy hammer, the legs and knees the axe and staff. The body operates as one unit. The knees and elbows constantly searching and testing for an opening while grappling and trying to spin an enemy to the ground for the kill. On Saturday evening January 28th, the sunken center court at True Arena Hua Hin was turned into a fighting pit for the Women’s Fight Muay Thai World Championship. Sift through the pages of blood sweat and tears starting on page 36. Incredible India. It’s not just a tourism slogan but a truth. Just 4 hours by air from Bangkok’s international airport you’ll land in New Delhi, the Capital of India. Colorful and alluring, it’s India’s gateway with 35 million people spread out over an area of 1483 square kilometers. Our Let’s Go feature this month takes us to this chaotic yet exotic city. Capture the sights on page 44. This month’s Let’s Check In feature takes us back in time to the era of King Rama V. The Muang Mallika Project, also known as The Siamese Living Heritage Town is part theme park, part living museum and part street market. Here you must change your clothes into those typically worn in Siam during the 1900’s as well as exchange your money for currency used during that period. Located in the Sai Yok District of Kanchanaburi Province, approximately 150 Km’s West of Bangkok, this town takes you back in time in every aspect possible. Get comfortable in your rickshaw and turn to page 58 to see for yourself. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find in this month’s issue. As always, thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

O

ne of the most challenging businesses to be in is the restaurant business, especially in Hua Hin where your choices seem limitless. But, like in any product category, if you are consistently good at what you do, both in product and service and you’re priced right, you’ll always have customers. That is the case with the Palm Bistro Beer and Wine Bar

who have been pleasing customers with their quality food, reasonable prices and changing menu for over six years now. The Palm Bistro is a family friendly restaurant where you can be assured of a delicious meal in a relaxed environment. Their menu is a fusion of Thai & Western cuisine with an astonishing selection of local beers, English Ales and American Craft Beers, both bottled and draught.

They also have an extensive wine selection, ciders and cocktails. While quite a bit of the menu stays the same, there is a nice selection of starters, main courses and deserts that are changed on a weekly basis. Dishes from the weekly selection that prove very popular are then migrated to the permanent menu.

There were four of us on our most recent visit to Palm Bistro. We all began with starters which were Pumpkin Cream soup, Red Pinto Bean served in a Tortilla scoop, Homemade Chicken Pate, with pineapple chutney and Bruschetta with smoked Salmon. I ordered the Pumpkin Cream soup. To be honest, I’m not a big pumpkin fan but I was the last to choose and I didn’t want to order a duplicate dish. I was in luck though because the creamy Pumpkin Soup was really delicious and I would certainly order it again. The Red Pinto Bean served in a Tortilla Scoop starter was on the menu as a test for their themed Mexican Night. I sincerely hope it makes the cut because I’ll definitely be having that. It was like a thick spicy chili with a kick to it. I can’t tell you about the Homemade Chicken Pate with pineapple chutney because that is a dish I just don’t eat but I can tell you that the Bruschetta with smoked Salmon was full of flavor and juicy against the crunchy bread. Our Mains included the Palm Bistro’s Fish and chips, Seared Tuna with mango Salsa, Spaghetti Olio with Sausage and Pad Krapao Pizza. The Fish and Chips are on their full-time menu and from the picture you can see why it’s so popular. It is a big piece of flaky fish in a nice

14

January 15 - February 15 , 2017

crispy batter with thick sliced homemade chips, mushy peas and a nice tartar sauce to accompany it. The Seared Tuna was thoroughly enjoyed as was my Spaghetti Olio with Sausage. I like a good Krapao and order it frequently but would at no time have thought to put it on a pizza. My mistake however as all the flavors came together masterfully and I look forward to having another one with a few frosty beverages very soon. Never one to turn down desert, the Sticky Toffee Pudding with Toffee Sauce and the Warm Chocolate Brownie, served with Ice Cream hit the spot perfectly. A part of what makes the longevity of the Palm Bistro so admirable is that it’s not located in the center of town, like most of its peers, instead it’s at the entrance to the Orchid Palm Homes 4 housing estate, up and over the hill on Soi 88. The owners of the Palm Bistro are the developers of Orchid Palm Homes and the Mali Residence’s. You don’t have to own a house at Orchid to enjoy the restaurant though as it’s open to the public and has been a very popular and well talked about restaurant ever since they opened their doors six years ago. The Palm Bistro also has special theme nights that are always well attended. Coming up is a return of their popular Mexican Night on the 24th of February and their Steak Night on the 10th of March. Tuesday thru Saturday they offer their “Early Bird Special” where from 17:30 to 18:30 you can have one starter and one main or one main and a desert for only 320 THB. Their Sunday Roasts are so well attended with regular customers that they have started a rewards program. Dine with them on a Sunday and receive a Sunday Lunch card, get a stamp on every Sunday Lunch purchased and receive a free Sunday lunch after 10 lunch purchases. Booking is recommended as they can get quite busy. If you are hungry on a Sunday but their Roast doesn’t quite hit the spot, not to worry, their normal menu is also available. A Kids menu is available six days a week. The Palm Bistro Beer and Wine Bar is open Tuesday thru Saturday for lunch from 10:30 to 14:30 and dinner from 17:30 to 22:00. Sunday they are open from 13:00 to 17:30. The Palm Bistro Beer & Wine Bar 032 828 144 reservations@thepalmbistro.com 132/11 Orchid Palm Homes 4 1043 Road, Tabtai, Hua Hin www.thepalmbistro.com

TRUE ARENA NEWS SUN’S OUT – GO RUN You’ve been determined to get your weight down and your fitness up since the beginning of the year, the weather is definitely better so running has been your go to program, yet every time you hop on the scale, the results have been disappointing. Why is this so? While running does burn mega calories, here are some reasons you may not be seeing the weight-loss results you're after.

YOU BINGE AFTER A RUN Although a postrun snack is essential, make sure it's packed with protein and carbs and does not exceed 150 calories. If you exercised before a meal, enjoy a well portioned plate, and don't go overboard as a way to reward your efforts.

NOT ENOUGH MILEAGE If you're running and not seeing results, you might not be doing enough runs. Doing one 45-minute run or a couple 20-minute runs a week won't burn enough calories to lose weight. In order to lose a pound a week, you'll need to cut 500 calories each day, through a combination of diet and exercise. If

34

January 15 - February 15 , 2017

losing weight is your goal, run three to four times per week and include strength training on the other days to boost metabolism.

YOU MIGHT BE BURNING LESS THAN YOU THINK You just got back from a run, you're covered in sweat, and you're convinced you burned over 500 calories. But did you really? Typically, a 150 lbs. woman will burn approximately 495 calories running 45 minutes at a 10-minute-permile pace. If you didn't run for that long or that fast, then you're not burning as many calories as you thought. It's best to track your workout just to be sure, using a heart rate monitor or download an app that will help you keep track.

SAME DAILY WORKOUT The problem lies with continually doing the same running workout. Your muscles will quickly adapt to the demands you're placing on them, which will promote a weight-loss plateau. Mix up your running workouts: include speed intervals, hills, long runs, and short runs, and run on different surfaces and in new places to keep your

muscles guessing and continuously strengthening. As mentioned earlier, it’s important to include strength training into your weight loss program and not solely relying on running.

DITCH THE SCALE Running is one of the best ways to tone your lower body because it helps burn fat. Once fat is reduced, muscles pop out. Muscle tissue is more dense than fat tissue, so it takes up less space. This means that although your weight might not decrease (and might even go up a little), other body measurements will change, such as waist and bra size, or the shape of your bum. Numbers on the scale isn't always the best way to monitor your progress. Even though the scale's not budging, you might be able to fit into your favorite jeans. Women’s Muay Thai World Championship at True Arena Hua Hin

O

n January 28th, Blood, Sweat and Tears appeared at True Arena in Hua Hin. Not the iconic 60’s Rock Band but the Women’s Fight Muay Thai World Championship. His Excellency Suwat Liptapanlop, former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand presided over the opening ceremony. Muay Thai, also known as Thai Boxing, is a national sport and cultural

martial art of Thailand. The knees and elbows constantly searching and testing for an opening while grappling and

trying to spin an enemy to the ground for the kill. In 1238, the first Thai army was created in the northern city of Sukhothai, Siam being its capital. The recorded history shows that a need to defend the capital city was spawned by many wars being fought between neighbouring tribes and kingdoms. The Siamese army was created to protect the government and its inhabitants within the city and

surrounding villages. Soldiers were taught hand-to-hand combat and how to use weapons, as well as how to use the entire body as a weapon. Their training is what eventually evolved into Muay Thai and Krabi Krabong. Learning the military arts or “Muay Thai became engrained in the culture of the early Siamese people. With the constant threat of war, training centers slowly began to appear throughout the

kingdom. These were the first Muay Thai camps. Young men practiced the art form for various reasons: selfdefense, exercise, discipline; monks even instructed at many Buddhist temples, passing down knowledge and history from one generation to the next. As Muay Thai became popular with the poor and common people, it also became a required staple for the highclass and royalty. The two sons of King

Phokhun Sri In Tharatit, the first King of Sukhothai, were sent to learn at the Samakorn training center. The common idea was that good warriors made brave leaders and this would prepare them as future rulers of the kingdom. Phokhun Ram Khamhaeng university is named after the writer of the first ancient text of Muay Thai. It is located in Bangkok along with the Sport Authority of Thailand.

Apart from carrying on the legend of previous Kings Fighters and Thai heroines, this championship was purposely held to support and promote Women's Muay Thai fighters who have increasingly developed boxing skills and gained worldwide recognition. True Arena’s sunken center tennis court was transformed for the evening into a classic Thai boxing stadium. The evenings highlight match was a defending title fight which pitted Thailand’s Ticha Rongraenkeela Korat, the World Muaythai Council WMC Champion against Lisa Wor Santai from England. The 5-round bout saw Thailand’s Ticha, aka “Wai Jadjan,” scoring with her left kicks and left punches and in the last 3 rounds her peak conditioning was too much as she kept up her fast attack allowing her to successfully defend her title. True Arena Hua Hin, a premier sports complex and state of the art fitness center has announced that they will establish a world-class Muay Thai Development Center to train Muay Thai fighters to compete internationally.

Colorful and alluring, gateway to India, Delhi is located in the northern part of India, confidently standing on the west bank of the Yamuna River which is bounded by Uttar Pradesh on the

north and west and south by the city of Haryana. With an incredible population of 35 million inhabitants spread out over an area of 1483 square kilometers, the effervescent city offers a range of attractions for anyone and everyone, making a visit to Delhi an unforgettable journey. Delhi is a city that may be hard to digest at first glance with its chaotic lifestyle reflected in the somewhat outrageous traffic circulation, its extensively crowded areas and the mixture of distinct aromas and sounds that cloud over the buzzing streets. Delhi is filled with people whichever way you turn and wherever you go, a clear reflection of the capital city of India being one of the most populous cities of the country. Its long historic

association as the capital gives Delhi a peculiar culture which is exemplified in the roughly 1200 heritage buildings and as many as 175 important monuments declared national heritage sites that can be found around the city. The city is known to be a melting pot of culture and religion, all of which is reflected in its infrastructure, its people and many of its outstanding architectural creations. Some of the national heritage sites with diverse and special architectural significance include India’s largest mosque, the Jama Masjid, the India Gate, the 18th century astronomical observatory known as the Jantar Mantar, the Lotus Temple built in a notable flower-like shape which has won several architectural awards and a marvelous 15th century fortress named Purana Qila.

f travelling is your passion and passion for a city is what you want to experience, you have not yet seen anything, till you have finally been to the chaotic yet exotic city of Delhi. Just 4 hours by air from Bangkok, the fervent and hospitable city is one that encompasses deep-rooted culture, unique tradition, and an everlasting history through a clearly distinguishable multidimensional metropolis divided between the vastly distinct areas of what is known as New Delhi and its counterpart the mysterious and picturesque Old City.

Just a few of the “must see” sights include the many beautiful Hindu temples spread out around Delhi, the extensive Parliament of India, some incredible palatial residences known to locals as havelis and memorials of Mahatma Gandhi, Indhira Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. These 3 are some of India’s greatest and most impactful leaders. Memorial’s to other notable Indian personalities can be found at the Raj Ghat. Most of the historical sights are in the Old City area of the Capital. In New Delhi, one can observe a significant number of government buildings and official residences that are prevalently inspired on regal British Colonial architecture. For those who wish to dive into Indian culture, Chandni Chowk is a must visit. This 17th century market is one of the most frequented for the specific purpose of buying jewelry and the traditional attire for Indian women, the sari. This bazaar area is filled with the buzzing vibrancy of Indian locals and the curious aromas that linger in the air. In this market one can discover India’s richness in fabrics and design as well as observe Delhi’s unique and majestic arts and crafts. Zardozi for instance is the art of embroidering with a gold or metallic colored thread as well as studded pearls and precious stones, a type of clothing embellishment that used to be used on the attire of the Rajas and Maharanis of India. Meenakari too is another craft which consists of the art of enameling, coloring and ornamenting the surface of 46

metals, a beautiful process which the results of can be enjoyed at metal shops selling varied metal ornaments decorated in this crafty style. Chandni Chowk is a fascinating place which also boasts of one of the most popular streets for amazing Indian food eateries known as the Gali Paranthe Wali which can be translated to the street of flat bread, a street which has been there since the 1970s, offering customers Indian fast food sold by street vendors or small local dining places known as dhabas. Street vendors sell their vegetables by simply laying them on large cloths on the floor and the hustle and bustle of buyers around, as well as the rickshaw drivers, create a constant traffic chaos that is a unique and unforgettable experience. Food is most definitely one of the important components to look forward to obsessing over, after a memorable trip to Delhi. Delhi cuisine is something which you can never get enough of and which you will seek to find in your home country and may even succeed. However, the authenticity of the spices, the way and the order in which the different tastes melt in your mouth within the confines of a friendly Indian joint will never be replaceable. Delhi’s classic dishes include the famous butter chicken, a curry blended with butter and spices that has an incredibly fluffy texture and his combined perfectly with large juicy chunks of chicken. Delhi also offers the perfect snacks such as the Aloo Samosa which is like a Spanish empanadilla with spice rich potatoes on its inside or the typical street food; aloo chat, a combination of potatoes, beans and spices served in little plates and mixed with a blend of masalas and a special yoghurt chutney or sauce. This snack, light meal or side dish is the perfect blend of flavors in one sole dish. And if rich in spices and potent tastes is not part of your jam, Delhi’s sweets will never disappoint. For instance, the traditional sweet lassi is a drink made from a mix of sweetened yoghurt and water in which you can also add a fruit. Popular versions of lassi that exist are banana lassi, mango lassi, or plain sweet lassi with no fruit. The sweet lassi is most definitely the perfect cool drink to accompany a meal or to end it on a sweet note and at the same time beat the harsh Delhi heat. Getting around Delhi can be quite challenging as the city is so vast and street names are not necessarily as available to the naked eye as one would like. So, although India has an extensive metro system and one can chose to ride on the rickshaws driven by locals for short distance journeys, we recommend Uber and Grab Taxi as the best way to get around Delhi as one can enjoy the services of English speaking drivers who are well familiarized with the trending places and the touristic spots in the city that you mustn’t leave without visiting. Delhi’s majestic buildings, the artistic décor of adorned walls and ceilings, its inexplicable attractive pandemonium of cars, bikes, rickshaws, people, and animals make it a once in a lifetime trip to a city that is unlike any in the world.

for individuals or families to casually travel back in time, all in the style of King Rama V of Thailand at only two and a half hours by car from Thailand’s modern capital city, Bangkok. This theme park allows visitors to travel back to the Chakri Dynasty ‘s days, meaning it takes you back all the way to roughly the years 1850 to the 1900. The Siamese living heritage town makes visitors have a first-hand experience of the lifestyle back then, with exposure to anything and everything one can think of from that time; the first thing visitors are required to do is to exchange their

current money to currency used during the old days. In addition, one must change their modern attire to typical Siamese clothing of the 1900s. The town takes you back in every aspect possible; this includes the people walking around, the cultural aspects of that time, the environment, the food and the many activities that were popular during those days. The little settlement is a tranquil area surrounded by peaceful water bodies, lots of tall trees and breath-taking greenery which adds to the vivid and picturesque environment of the past

ave you ever dreamt of time travelling to the simplicity of a beautiful ancient city? If history fascinates you and you wonder how on earth people survived in the past and what wearing their shoes might have felt like, the Muang Mallika Project, also known as The Siamese Living Heritage Town, will most definitely entice you. This little town, situated in the Sai Yok District of the Kanchanaburi Province, around 150 Km's west of Bangkok city, is similar to a market and is a unique representation of what living a century ago in Thailand may have felt like. The little heritage town is the perfect place

and which we very much lack in our modern cities. The essence of the 1850s is brought alive with the richness of vintage architectural style throughout the heritage town, with predominantly buildings made from wood and lots of open spaces built specifically for the natural ventilation of the houses. While walking around, one can observe the various activities which have been brought back from the past; from canoe trips through a little lake, to rickshaw rides throughout the city and women creating flower crowns and necklaces, the town is truly captivating to the imaginative mind. With the money exchanged at the entrance, one can enjoy traditional dances of the Siamese in the evening, purchase goods sold around the town, all of which are fit to the period, as well as get cooking classes to learn the culinary specialties of the 1850s. The Muang Mallika Project is a culturally rich space which aims at educating the youth and demonstrating to all what life in the 1900s in Thailand might have been like; a period in which slavery had been brought to an end and slight foreign cultural influences began to enter the great kingdom of Siam. The Siamese Living Heritage Town has been the backdrop of famous movies such as the film series King Naresuan and will likely be fit as the backdrop of a culturally rich and educating weekend getaway.
