Dear Reader Welcome to issue 7/8, Volume 5 of HOT Magazine. We start out this issue by taking you to the exotic NiYAMA private island resort in the Maldives. The NiYAMA resort is actually two private islands, one’s called Play and the other is Chill. It’s where one international surfer found the ultimate job with the business card title that reads “Surf Dude.” We take you to this luxurious enchanted escape on page 32. This month’s “Let’s Go” takes us to the immensely fascinating city of Yangon. Just a little over an hour’s flight from Bangkok, Yangon is the home and heart of Pagoda’s. Here is where you will find the legendary Shwedagon Pagoda, the most prized asset in Buddhism. The Pagoda is thought to be twenty-six centuries old, which would make it the oldest known Pagoda in the history of the world. Besides being plated in gold, the temple is topped with a 76-karat diamond, a gift to the people of Myanmar from her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth. Join us in this cultural expedition on page 44. Also in this issue you’ll find interviews with many interesting people, including our sit down with Byrant Olson. American born Bryant resides in Bangkok and is the man behind the Philip B. product line in the Kingdom. Philip B’s hair-care products are some of the most expensive in the world. Prices in Thailand range from 650 baht for a very small “travel bottle” of shampoo to 55,000 baht for his Russian Amber shampoo. Forbes Magazine placed Philip B.’s scalp treatment on their list of “100 Things Worth Every Penny. In Thailand, Bryant’s marketing success has led to his products being used by Thai super stars, celebrities, and the crème de la crème of high society. Read why you need to up your hair-care game on page 56. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month’s issue of HOT Magazine. As always, thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

What is your favorite restaurant and why? (please don’t promote your own restaurants) Being a new comer I haven’t really had the opportunity to identify my favorites yet. Let’s talk again in a few months after I have eaten my way through the Hot Hua Hin Magazine restaurant guide What do you like to do in your free time and why?
v
Spend time with my family, play tennis with my son and trying to keep my 2 month old from crying nonstop. My wife and I enjoy entertaining at home with friends and family. It is sometimes difficult but it is crucial to your wellbeing to be able to find your work life balance. A wise person once said “very few people on their death bed say they wished they spent more time at work.” What would you recommend to newcomers to do in Hua Hin and why? I think Hua Hin has a good mix of history and modernization. As a Royal City there are lots of historical features commemorating the Royal Family. The train station, palace and the first golf course in Thailand are just a few. Hua Hin also features new shopping centers, water parks, state of the art cinemas, animal sanctuaries and thriving night markets. Hua Hin is a comfortable driving distance from the chaos of Bangkok and offers the best of both city and resort living without all the commotion of some of Thailand’s more famous tourist destinations. It is full of small town charm and the residents offer genuine Thai hospitality
What is your full name and age? Bruce Dupuis, 52 years old What is your current Job Position? General Manager of Sheraton Hua Hin Resort and Spa and Sheraton Hua Hin Pranburi Villas How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? My family and I arrived to Hua Hin on July 1st this year. This is only our second time to visit Hua Hin What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? Not much as I have only been working in Thailand for over a year. I knew it was a Royal City and I look forward to exploring our new home with my family. What do you like most about your profession? Meeting people and travelling the world. My work gives me the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the people and culture in a country as I am embedded within. When you visit a 8
HOT Magazine
country on vacation you really only get to see the surface of the destination. I also enjoy being a part of my guest’s vacations and celebrations. Delivering a great guest experience or delivering on a flawless event is very rewarding. What do you like least about your profession? The hours can a bit long, and you are usually working when other people are off. However that is the nature of the hospitality industry. You either love it or hate it. I am fortunate I have a supportive family who are incredibly understanding. What do you like most about Hua Hin? I have not been in Hua Hin long so it is difficult to say what I like most. However I do have a great team of associates who have welcomed my family and I into the Sheraton Hua Hin Resort and Spa and the Sheraton Hua Hin Pranburi Villas family with open arms. I look forward to working closely with the team of dedicated professionals
Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you? My wife and I are real dog lovers. At one point we had 8 boxers although our recent locations have not allowed us to have dogs. What is the most outlandish thing you have ever done and why? Probably moving to Moscow in 1992 to open a fine dining room at a Canadian Russian joint venture hotel. I knew absolutely nothing about the country except for what I saw in the news which included people standing in line for bread and sugar. Not really a good sign for a culinary professional. I took the job because after going through all the interviewing process I was scared to say no. Looking back it was the best decision I have ever made. It opened my eyes to the rest of the world and jump started my career which has taken me to work in 9 countries. The decision was not without repercussions though as my Mother did not speak to me for a couple of weeks once I told her I accepted the job.

TRUE ARENA NEWS TENNIS FOR LIFE HUA HIN: START PLAYING TENNIS QUICKLY! importantly to get rid of the anxiety of making a fool of yourself with people that have been playing for a while.
Get on court with a coach, expect nothing, relax and make the ball on court. Playing tennis should be a positive and enjoyable experience. “What we learn with pleasure we never forget”Alfred Mercier.
• Expect nothing and play for fun! If you go on a court with the goal to enjoy hitting the ball and playing, you will reduce the negative thoughts of making mistakes and have a more enjoyable experience.
Many people believe tennis is a difficult sport. It is easy to get to a decent recreational level of tennis and here is how. • The first thing you have to do is to find a coach and take a few lessons not only to learn the basics, but must
INVESTING IN MOBILITY How well would your car run if you did not maintain it well? Tires and brakes are worn, oil unchanged and essential fluids are low or bone dry. It would degrade quickly and perform poorly. The same thing happens with the mechanics of the human body when it is forced to perform physical demands without good mobility. Parts start to break down. Joints aren’t “lubricated” so to speak, and muscles that should be minor contributors in given movements become “over contributors”. The body works too hard and eventually something breaks, thus an injury occurs, which is your body’s way of telling you, “change my oil and change my tires.”
We welcome you in to visit us at True Arena Hua Hin to play tennis and enjoy our ITF Tournaments that start on September 9.
• Stay relaxed! Try to make the ball on the court with the minimum effort. The most basic important strategy in tennis is “Get the ball on the court.” It does not matter how the swing looks, how quick/ slow the ball travels to the other side. You will be surprised on how many points and matches you will win simply by making one more ball on the court. You will see this at any level.
Hasta la vista, Arturo Navarro Director of Tennis True Arena Hua Hin
Battling with training-induced injuries is a reality we all have to face at some point whether we are training for a competition or just maintaining our level of fitness. This is part and parcel of an active lifestyle. The positive results in why we train is that the various types of demanding exercises we practice have great potential to make us faster, stronger and better functioning human beings. If you find that you are injured quite often and are becoming frustrated with being bogged down, it is probably time to honestly and critically examine your mobility. Why? Your mobility dictates the efficiency and safety of your squatting, running, pulling, pressing, lifting and virtually every other movement discipline. Before going further it is important to understand what mobility is and how it can improve function. Mobility is the ability of a joint and the muscles attached to it to move through a given range of motion. Good mobility is the ability of a joint to move through that joint’s full range of motion without: 1. Pain or 2. Muscular or structural restriction in local or distal areas of the body

THE 5 POWERFUL BENEFITS OF GOOD MOBILITY 1. Safety and Efficiency – Your joints will be able to handle load more safely and efficiently. 2. Movement Standards – You will be able to accomplish standards of movement easily. Eg; Full depth squats, push- ups/pull- ups 3. Increased Performance -Your body will experience greater resilience and perform for longer periods of time because your muscles are allowed to work optimally and not have to compensate for poor mechanics. 4. Faster Recovery – You will recover faster after workouts because activating and using muscles properly avoids overuse. 5. Resistance to Injury – You will experience resistance to future injuries due to the prior 4 points working in unison. Check out next month's issue for the conclusion of Investing in Mobility. T
his year the Amari Resort Hua Hin is celebrating their 5th anniversary and we decided to celebrate by visiting the Amari’s Shoreline Beach Club for a beachside delectable dinner. The Shoreline Beach Club offers indoor and outdoor dining. On the evening we visited it was the perfect night to dine outside and Khun Pranisa, the restaurant manager, sat us at a table right next to the beach with the beautiful ocean view in front of us. Our dinner started with an Australian Chardonnay and several appetizers, the
Shoreline’s Spice Crispy Calamari and the Shoreline’s very popular table side Seared “Hot Rock”. The Curry Calamari was prepared “fritter” style with the savory morsels accompanied by kafir leaves and served with a Tom Yam Aioli sauce for dipping. A beautiful spicy flavor emanated from the crunchy fritter that inundated the senses and combined splendidly with the fresh and genuine tones of the Calamari. Adding a beautiful and soft, almost brielike hint, was the Tom Yam Aioli sauce. This was creamy, subtle and flavorful,
accentuating its delicate taste at the end of each bite. Next we were presented with a wonderful fun dish that got us all involved. A very “HOT Rock” was brought to our table, set on a layer of stones, along with a platter of Australian lamb loin that had been sprinkled with sea salt and lemon miso. With the provided chopsticks we had fun searing our own bites, and fending off each other’s utensils advancing towards our fare. – All in all, a truly fanciful way of inaugurating our dinner.

The main courses came next, an impressive Seafood Platter, a Miso Glazed Snow Fish and their Hor Mok Maprao Onn which was a Thai-style seafood curry, served in a coconut and playfully garnished with a mussel from the sea. Smooth, spicy and creamy, it reminded us of the many reasons we love being in Thailand. The Seafood Platter was substantial with Rock Lobster, Tiger Praws, Squid, Seabass and Mussel’s heaped on a mini table sized barbeque. 20

This dish was accompanied by vegetable fried rice, a green salad and 3 kinds of sauces. The last main was the Shoreline’s Miso Glazed Snow Fish. A beautiful presentation, it was plated with a roasted pumpkin puree, smoked bacon broth and pickled vegetables. A quick tabulation from my dining companions found the Snow Fish and the Seafood Platter at the top of the poll but honestly, all of
the dishes received (and deserved) high marks. But, no meal is complete without desert and Shoreline did not let us down. Three sensational deserts were put before us which included their Young Coconut & Coffee Creme Brulee which is accompanied by a frosty strawberry, mint and vanilla ice cream, however we substituted strawberry ice cream. We also had their Salted Caramel which
decadently consisted of chocolate chip cookie crumbs, white chocolate and whipped cream and finally, Italy’s most popular desert, Tiramisu The Shoreline Beach Club is open for dinner from 18:00 to 22:00 seven days a week. If you haven’t been for lunch, it too needs to be put on your agenda. Lunch is served from 12:00 to 17:00 and the bar is open all day, with Singha on tap and a wide variety of cocktails, with
or without alcohol as well as smoothies and milkshakes. There is certainly no charge to visit the Shoreline Beach Club for lunch or dinner but if you would like to use the beach club facilities (sun loungers & pool) you are welcome to do so for a THB 500/person fee which is returned in the form of a THB 500 food and beverage voucher to be used on the same day. Sun loungers are available on a first come,
first served basis. The Shoreline Beach Club is located in Koh Takiab before the Let’s Sea Resort. For more information, contact the Amari Hua Hin Resort at 032 616 600.

Anantara Spa, Hua Hin
I
had often driven past the Anantara’s front gates, but I had never ventured inside. When the chance to experience the Anantara’s ‘Signature Massage’ presented itself, I jumped at the opportunity to indulge in the luxury of a 5 star spa, and to explore the grounds of ‘a retreat fit for royalty’. Upon entering the Anantara, I was immediately struck by its timeless, Thai beauty. The resort is designed to reflect a traditional Thai village with rooms that are clustered within lush, tropical gardens. I explored the expansive 14-acre resort, weaving past pool, through the restaurants, and down
24

to the beach where hammocks and sun beds dotted the sand. I wandered back along the path, through the verdant gardens, toward the spa. As I entered this exclusive section of the resort, I was presented with a vista of an incredible, lotus-filled lagoon. I forgot that I was on the outskirts of Hua Hin, and I was immediately transported to secret getaway along the banks of a Thai river. The Anantara Spa overlooks the lagoon with six luxurious treatment suites. Each suite opens onto a private garden courtyard complete with outdoor rain showers. Three of the spa suites are accessed via a wooden jetty, which is lit
at night by flaming oil lamps that run around the entire edge of the lagoon. It is little wonder that Anantara Spa was the South East Asian regional winner of Luxury Hideaway Spa for 2017. Khun Kamonwan, the spa manager, welcomed me and offered me a refreshing, cold towel and a glass of infused water. She described their Signature Massage and confirmed my preferences for the massage to ensure maximum benefit: Was their an area of my body that required more attention; What level of pressure would I like? Was I familiar with Thai massage techniques? Their 60 minute Signature Massage is
performed with a special oil blend, and combines western and Thai massage techniques. It is designed to stimulate circulation, promote deep relaxation, and restore energy flow. I was introduced to my masseuse, Khun Nicha, who guided me to my garden suite. My massage experience began a relaxing footbath followed by a harmonious full-body massage. It was a mind and body experience that considered all senses: The smell of the oil; the gentle music; the temperature controlled room; the tranquil garden setting; and the deep, rhythmic pressure from the hands of an experienced
masseuse. She confirmed that she was using the right amount of pressure and honed in on the areas of my back and shoulders that I had initially identified with long, languid strokes. She soothed my legs and feet and ended with one of the most glorious head massages I have ever experienced. Anantara stems from ancient Sanskrit, meaning ‘without end’, and this is precisely what I had wished for during this spa treatment! When Khun Nicha informed me that the spa treatment had ended, she advised me to take my time. The thought of staying in the room crossed my mind… Would the staff
realise I had not left the suite? Would my husband realise I had not returned home? Surely the dog would miss me! While I was changing back into my clothes, Khun Nicha was preparing a pot of hot, ginger tea. A table and chair had been set for me in the shade along the wooden jetty by the lagoon where I was able to sit back, totally relaxed, and ponder my next visit to the Anantara Hua Hin Resort’s Spa.

Surfing NIYAMA's Private Islands
F
or Zach Zocher, NIYAMA Private Island’s professional Surf Dude, surfing is a passion that became an obsession, and ultimately lead him to pack for paradise. Growing up in Cape Town, he started surfing at the age of ten and soon represented his province in the South African Surfing Championships. Still a teenager, he immigrated to Australia

with his parents and landed in the beautiful seaside town of Avoca. “In Avoca I surfed every day and I loved the sense of adventure and exploration that surfing offered me,” said Zach. “It is here that my passion became an obsession and my travels in search of perfect waves started.” Zach’s epic surf adventures have taken him to some of the world’s best
surf spots from Jeffery’s Bay in his home country of South Africa, to Trestles and Blacks Beach in California, to the eponymous Bells Beach in Australia and various breaks around the Mentawai Islands. During a surf expedition in the Maldives he discovered NIYAMA. “Most of the surf spots in this area remain undiscovered, but at NIYAMA
the secret is right in front of you. It’s the only luxury resort sporting surfable waves that break directly onto the island,” said Zach. “The resort offers adjoining twin islands, Chill and Play, and just off the edge of Play Island’s Surf Corner is Vodi surf point – a classic, powerful left-hand ride that breaks onto the shore. Off to the West and just five minutes away by speedboat is Kasabu surf point at Kudahuvadhoo Corner – a superb right hander with barrelling sections. Head East for ten minutes to Hocus Pocus at Maeenboodhoo Corner for another barrelling right hander.” Raving about the surf conditions, Zach continued to rave about the waves around NIYAMA and how they are relatively mellow and playful, but
challenging at times and suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers, with some spots perfect for beginner coaching. As the resort was gearing up to introduce a series of surf options and tailored services, Zach took the opportunity to offer his expertise on the spot. He then returned soon after as the head of surf operations at NIYAMA. FLOAT, NIYAMA’s water sports operator, offers an array of tailor-made surf programmes and services to suit every surfer. “From beginner coaching courses to various surf pass options that offer on-demand boat transfers to surf points located away from the resort, I am on hand to coach first timers or use video analysis to help intermediate surfers get to the next level,” said Zach.
“The best thing about surfing at NIYAMA is the fact that the surf points are off the beaten track with uncrowded waves and high quality breaks,” he said. Zach also confessed that, despite having surfed some of the best spots around the globe, nothing compared to arguably the ultimate luxury surf experience offered at the resort – a private seaplane at surfers’ disposal to discover and surf secret spots. “The seaplane allows surfers to discover untouched waves anywhere in the ocean, and swim back to the plane for the scenic short journey back to the resort.” And this isn’t a surprise if one just takes a minute to admire the setting in which a holiday maker finds himself in at NIYAMA.

Amari Hua Hin's GM Khun Ton
H
OT Magazine recently had the pleasure of meeting up with K. Ton, GM of the Amari Hua Hin Resort who is celebrating his one year anniversary at the hotel and the resort's five year anniversary. HM: With your one-year tenure, how has the hotel changed and what have you seen as your role in that change? KT: It’s been an amazing and positive change measured by the increase in our online rankings through various online reputation management, which are not only from our own social media channels or online travel agent website's, but from renown leading review platforms, such as TripAdvisor. It’s undeniable that nowadays, online review platforms play a vital role and ranking can be so important to the success of businesses.

Compared to offline marketing, these reviews seem to be a word-of-mouth strategy by which guests can get recommendations or information for making comparisons and decisions. To give you a precise number, the Hotel’s ranking has increased from No. 17 to No. 11 via TripAdvisor. Breeze Spa has gone up in rank from No. 50 to No. 6, and Shoreline Beach Club, our beachfront restaurant, has gone up from No. 115 last year to No. 28 this year. We have been developing a straightforward strategy, “Happy Staff, Happy Guests”, following one of Amari’s brand hallmarks, “Positivity So Infectious”. We believe that the staff’s positive attitude makes a strong impression on the guests. If the staff exudes happiness, guests can be infected, leading to a good and
memorable experience. This strategy has been quite successful, as seen from the higher percentages in the guests’ satisfaction surveys and the engagement of the staff having gone up to 94% with a dramatic reduction in staff turnover from a two-digit to a one-digit percentage. Of course, as a general manager, I am proud to see this huge progress within one year. HM: Amari Shoreline Beach Club is the only beach club in Hua Hin to have its own swimming pool and quality restaurant. I’m sure that your guests love the club, but is it also popular with Hua Hin residents? KT: Yes. According to the tracking report, we have more guests coming in from outside than guests staying at the
hotel to visit the restaurant or 70% :30%. Of the outside visitors, 40% are our local Hua Hin residences and most of them become our repeat guests that usually call us directly or book through our social media channels. HM: Within the last year, several new large hotels opened in Hua Hin and the 300-room Holiday Inn is set to open at the end of this year. How do you see Hua Hin’s hotel industry faring in 2018? KT: I think Hua Hin will have the same demand on the weekend and oversupply on the weekday anyway, meaning that there are still opportunities on the weekend and slow demand during the weekdays. We, as a city, need to develop our strategy to invite repeat guests and more potential clients, rather than managing the prices during the week.
The strategy needs not only to be pushed by one organisation, but by companies, hotels, local shops, transportation providers and by government united; all combined on the direction for growth. We as a city will succeed together in a “win-win” situation. HM: What are your plans for your second year at the helm of Amari? KT: Making Amari Hua Hin the perfect home away from home getaway for all travellers: golfers, business travellers, families, couples or groups of friends. For families that travel with children, we are enlarging the Kids’ Club to keep the children occupied and even happier while staying with us as well as to develop to have more repeated and royalty guests.
HM: For the hotel’s fifth anniversary, do you have any special events or promotions that are taking place? KT: This year, Amari Hua Hin is celebrating the fifth anniversary with three main events. To show our gratitude to the staff, we will arrange a special activity and give them a service recognition award after a religious ceremony. Second, for Amari’s loyal guests, we will launch a special deal called “happy5” with good prices and great offers from F&B and the Spa. Third, we will have a special event for all guests and partners around November or before the high season starts.

T
here are cities in the world known for their food, their culture, their geography or their sites in particular. But few are as iconic in representing the might of a once glorious civilisation as the one we look at in this month’s Let’s Go. Majestic as they come and a true icon of Southeast Asia, the beautiful traits of this city of bridged cultures speaks volumes of its history, its present and the way in which it came to be the commercial focal point of Myanmar. This edition of Hot Magazine presents Yangon, the home and heart of Pagodas. Located in the lower region of Myanmar, Yangon translates to “The end of Conflict.” The city’s name was formerly Rangoon, during the period
in which the country was subjected to British colonialism after it was taken over for the second time in 1852 to make it the hub of British Burma. The colonization did however provide the city with certain infrastructural advantages, constructing houses and amenities such as hospitals and universities, among them the University of Yangon, which is the oldest in the country and the best known. Yangon today is the city with the largest population in Myanmar boasting an estimated number of seven and a half million inhabitants. The city, until last decade, remained the country's capital, before this was shifted to the purposefully laid out city of Naypyidaw. Yangon began growing as a city during the mid-1990’s, when its housing
began to develop in areas previously uninhabited turning toward the location of the city’s international airport. Today therefore possesses an array of different business centres as opposed to a specific central business district. Also done in the mid 1990s, specifically in 1996, was the delineation of a collective of edifices that were protected by law and whose modification was prohibited. Thus, to protect the identity of the city, the Yangon City Heritage list was created, forbidding the tearing down of structures without the permission of the city government. The list, comprising 188 buildings composed mostly of colonial buildings from the era of the British and religious shrines, is the reason most of the city retains an exquisite flavor of its unique identity.

Among those protected buildings is one of Yangon’s – and Southeast Asia’s – most prized assets when it comes to Buddhism. The Shwedagon Zedi Daw, known most prominently as the Shwedagon Pagoda, is one of the greatest relics in the country. Measuring just short of 100 metres and soaring above almost every building in the city, its essence represents Myanmar. It is situated atop the Singuttara Hill, which gives it even greater relief and makes it visible from almost anywhere in Yangon. The Shwedagon Pagoda has a disputed origin, but it is largely believed to have been constructed by the Mon people and completed about eleven centuries ago. Legend has it however that the pagoda is twenty six centuries old, something which, if true, would make it the oldest known pagoda in the history of the world. But it wasn’t always this imposing. The 14th century was a saving grace for a structure which had fallen unattended for years, until King Binnya erected its peak to an imposing eighteen metres, which by today’s standards would have seemed mediocre. Only one hundred years later, it was under renovation again under Queen Binnya Thau, who more than doubled its height to make it soar an impressive forty metres. It was there where the pagoda began to gain greater and greater fame, leading to its eventual iconic status – already in that era – as the pagoda with the greatest pilgrims from the entire area of Burma.
46
HOT Magazine
The Shwedagon pagoda suffered further damage again in the centuries succeeding Queen Binnay’s rule, when natural disasters such as earthquakes brought it near its knees yet again. This was to be brief, as in an effort to restore it, King Hsinbyunshin raised its height to its iconic 99 meters at which it stands today. This was topped by a crown umbrella in donated in the 19th century by King Mindon Min, something which gives it the distinctive shape at the top. Since then, a few earthquakes have at times damaged part of the pagoda, which has nonetheless survived nature’s attempts to floor it. The months of February and March see the celebration of the Shwedagon Pagoda festival, the most revered pagoda celebration in Myanmar. One more remarkable aspect of Shwedagon Pagoda is the parks which surround it. Known for their beauty and size, their maintenance level is above average of the rest and boast of amble vegetation and water sources. The most famous among them is Kandawgyi Nature Park, which at its 150 acres of land is one of the biggest in the city. In it, one finds Kandawgyi Lake, an artificial body of water which was created to provide a clean water supply back during the colonial period all around its eight kilometre circumference. At a relatively shallow depth, the lake’s metre or so below water hosts small life forms and is a frequent habitat for birds and other animals. The most remarkable aspect of the pagoda is the material of which it is made, coated with vast amounts of gold plating, which has, since the first time Queen Shin Sawbu donated her weight of it, been offered by many for the prolongation of its upkeep and maintenance. But the crown jewel, of the entire structure, and never better said, is the very top of the stupa, which is garnished with a 76 karat diamond stone which was donated to the iconic monument by Queen Elizabeth. Yangon does however boast of many more attractions aside from the Shwedagon Pagoda. Its architectonic features are one of the most curious out of any city in Asia, blending a whimsical combination of western and traditional Asian culture. As such, Yangon has the most elevated number of buildings from the colonial era in comparison to other nations in southeast Asia. It's end of century architecture is one of the most original traits, and makes the city contrast greatly in terms of diversity and picturesque sites. Most of such edification are found in downtown Yangon, where the British had the major part of their operational base. To this date, despite the decaying aspect of many of such buildings, they remain highly valued and fetch high prices in the market due to their beauty and the symbolism of their features.
HOT Magazine
47
The weather in Yangon is tropical and boasts of a monsoon season which gives it rainy summers and humid climate most of the year. Temperatures during this time are relatively lower, as the showers make the average yearlong heat more bearable. Visiting during the months of November through January is recommended to catch the good combination of bearable heat and clear skies. However, if you want cooler temperatures and don’t mind a splash, the summer is definitely a time you can venture to this rustic city. Yangon, with the marvellous nature of its architecture, its colonial history and its importance as a hub of iconic Buddhism, is one of the most beautiful cities in Asia. It reflects every aspect of Myanmar’s complex but rich culture and tells the story of a place which has seen its essence coalesce with that of western touches, both cultural and structural. Whether you go on a religious pilgrimage to view the marvellous Shwedagon Pagoda or whether you become captivated by the emblematic mix of east meets west architecture in the streets, Yangon is definitely one of the more captivating destinations on the map. If you have yet to travel there, it is highly advisable that you do. 48

Bryant Olson, selling hair-care to the 1%
P
hilip B. is the professional name of Philip Berkovitz, an American hair stylist and entrepreneur who founded the Philip B. Hair And Skin Care Company. Philip began his professional hair styling career as a teenager in his home state of Massachusetts. In 1984, he moved to Los Angeles and found work in salons frequented by Hollywood celebrities. Finding that commercial treatments were inadequate for healing over-processed hair, common to movie actresses, Philip B. experimented with botanical blends of his own. He sourced ingredients for custom-blended essential oil formulations at local farmers' markets and herb shops. His first commercial formula, Philip B. Rejuvenating Oil, was first sold at Fred Segal in Los Angeles in 1992. His venture went nationwide a year later with placement at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman. Today, Philip B. treatment and styling products are sold in 74 countries. Philip counts over 400 celebrities using his products daily including Lady Gaga, Madonna, Drew Barymore, Sandra Bullock, Robert Redford, Courtney Love, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Ronnie Wood to name just a few. American born Bryant Olson is the man behind Philip B. in Thailand. Just like people told Bill Heinecke that Thai’s wouldn’t eat pizza, people told Bryant that Thai’s wouldn’t pay expensive prices for hair care. Thankfully, Thai’s love pizza and it turns out there is a segment of Thai’s who will pay high prices for quality hair care products.

Bryant Olson, CEO of Philip B. Thailand
HOT Magazine recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Bryant Olson to discuss his life, his work and his passions. HM: Bryant, you grew up in the States. When did you first come to Thailand and when did you decide to make the Country your home? BO: I first came to Thailand on Holiday almost 20 years. I remember driving to Hua Hin and passing many houses along the drive and imagining myself living there, but in reality, I had a successful architecture business back in the States, so that was not really possible. About 10 years ago, I decided to attempt semi retiring in Chiang Mai. It had been a place I always loved and was looking for a break from a project that had just finished in the Virgin Islands. I thought Chiang Mai would be a reprieve from my past stress of designing for demanding clients. At this point I have been here for almost 10 years. HM: Did you move directly from the U.S. or had you lived in other countries before deciding to move to the Kingdom? BO: Actually I moved from Bali where I had been busy manufacturing furniture for my project in the Islands. In the past
I also did part of my education in the UK (London) and also spent a lot of time living in Spain. HM: When you settled here did you already know what you wanted to do business wise? BO: At first I wanted to learn about Buddhism and was in no way focused on business. At some point I decided to focus on Thai language. The business really came later after I realized it was too early to retire. HM: How did you come to be involved with Philip B.? BO: I met Philip in West Hollywood while working on projects in Beverly Hills. I just kept seeing him at parties and events and one day he walked up to me and said “you look interesting, I’m Philip B.” HM: Did it take time to build the business in Thailand or was it an instant success? BO: Honestly, it had impact from the very beginning. However, we are still growing and still have room for much more growth. HM: Philip B. products are very high end, I’ve heard you have the most
expensive shampoo in the World. Did you have a foothold in the High Society market already or did you have to build the relationships from scratch? BO: I have heard that as well, something to do with 58,000 THB Russian Amber shampoo encrusted in 3800 Swarovski gems. Wink-wink. The brand PHILIP B is celebrating it 27th year in business and is now sold in over 74 countries. The brand has been loved by celebrities for much of that duration. He started in Hollywood that definitely helped things. For the Thai market many of our customers had been buying us for years in Harrods on trips to London or Bergdorf Goodman on trips to New York. I have had a lot of help for the last few years from Thai High society though. They have been instrumental in making us a top luxury brand. HM: Who are some of your more wellknown Philip B. clients here in Thailand? BO: Cindy Bishop, Tae Kantana, Monlada Pongpanit, Momay , Feonalita, Rika Dila, Duangporn Boonyachinda, Ase Wang. Many more but some I can’t mention because of politics and others because they have contracts with other brands.

Philip B.
HM: What is your most expensive Philip B. product and what justifies the price? BO: Our most expensive shampoo is the Russian Amber Shampoo. It uses technology to help rebuild the hair from the inner most layer of the cuticle, while being very botanically driven, it offers a total transformation, while still being natural and gentle - plus it is rich in amino acids and pumped full of Amber oil. People sometimes complain about the price at first but after they use it they claim that nothing compares to having the best hair of their life. Many say the feeling is Virgin Hair. The price comes from this product being hand made in Hollywood California and the 28 pure botanical extracts that are real. Plus the amber oil comes from an ethical source in India and is a very expensive commodity. HM: What is your bestselling Philip B. Product and why do you think that is? BO: Our Peppermint Avocado Volumizing and Clarifying Shampoo is a top seller. One, it’s about 2,300 THB for a bottle, two, it is very cooling because of the peppermint – great for Thai heat. Also, it is used to treat scalp issues, which are common here in the tropics. HM: “Brick and Mortar” stores around the globe are having difficulties as on-line sales grow due to convenience and price. Do you sell more Philip B. in Department Stores or On-Line? BO: In the West “Brick and Mortar”retail has really been effected massively by the online markets but here in Asia online makes up for about 20% of our sales. The rest of our sales are still coming from the actual stores. The products are expensive and many customers fear of buying fake good or 58

illegal goods off discount online retailers. They want to touch it, feel it and ask questions on what products will work best for them. HM: Do you feel social media is important in promoting the brand and selling your products? BO: Social Media is the fastest and surest way to reach potential customers. IG, Facebook or Twitter posts by a celebrity most certainly causes a rush in sales. Last week Drew Barrymore posted her favorite products featuring our Oud Shampoo with Mega Bounce and it received over 16,000 likes. It is a fast approach and it works but only if the celebrity is giving an honest review. If the follower feels it is a paid solicitation the sales will most likely not be greatly affected. HM: Do you represent other product lines in the Kingdom? BO: Yes, I just launched another brand called Julisis which is a very special alchemist designed, botanically rich product from Germany. HM: You will be opening a new spa called “The Penthouse” on the top floor of the trendy J Avenue Mall on Thonglor 15 and we understand it will offer the first Philip B. Scalp Treatment in Asia. What can you tell us about this new luxury spa and the services it will offer? BO: The Penthouse is a joint venture between my partners, who operate the very celebrated BFF, a specialty luxury boutique with locations in Thonglor and Central Ladprao. The treatment center is set to open in August 2017. It will feature private treatment rooms with en-suite baths and fitted with the finest décor & accessories. This joint venture will be offering, age-defying skin and scalp
treatments. The Spa will have brands such as 111Skin, EviDens de Beaute, 3Lab and JULISIS, in addition to PHILIP B scalp and hair treatment. It will be the closest thing to a trip to heaven without dying. You will leave looking restored, physically & spiritually. HM: A sideline business of yours is booking international celebrities for different events here in Thailand. How did that come about and who are some of the Stars you have worked with? BO: Many years ago while living in Hollywood, I was lucky enough to befriend a few celebrities and after I moved here people just started emailing me. One example is Belinda Carlisle who spends a lot of time here in Asia, she then recommended me to a few celebrities, who then recommended me to a few more. In the past I have entertained Paris Hilton, Lady Gaga, Queen Latifah & even some royalties such as the King of Bahrain. Last year, I helped with the launch of Kilian Hennesey (the son of LVMH) and his fragrance By Kilian. We had a great time running around Thailand. Others include Loree Rodkin and her best friend Cher. This year I’m working on a project to bring John Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen (who is half Thai) to an event scheduled in November. HM: Finally Bryant, tell us a little more about yourself. When you have free moments, what do you like to do, where do you like to go and what is the most outlandish thing you have ever done? BO: I’m obsessed with architecture ruins, I think we call it architectural porn these days. I spend much of my free time looking at photos of dilapidated historic structures and then paint or draw these elaborate buildings in different stages of
destruction. On most week days, I can be found at social events around Bangkok, but on weekends I’m strictly at the beach with my partner Chalong Tonklongchan, whom after almost 7 years, I still adore. Lastly the most outlandish thing I have ever done isn’t probably meant for publishing. But second most outlandish thing would most likely be kissing actor Alan Cummings while dressed as a character from Pee Wee’s Playhouse on a dark Halloween night in West Hollywood. On this finial note, I would like to say that Thailand has been incredibly gracious to me over the years. And not only gracious but also very inclusive. I still feel very honored to be accepted into Thai Society and not a day goes by that I don’t forget about being included in the Kings Remembrance ceremony - It’s just something that stays with you. Truly Honored.

Sansara, living the life you love
A
ccording to international property consultant JLL, luxury senior housing developments in Thailand’s resort destinations are growing in number to cater to the ageing baby boomer generation. These developments are mainly targeting foreigners and affluent Thais. "The luxury senior housing market in Thailand remains relatively small but has a strong potential to grow," says Suphin Mechuchep, Managing Director of JLL. Khun Suphn went on to explain that a nice living environment, competitive cost of living and more affordable high quality nursing care have made Thailand an ideal home for senior people from developed economies. These include both independent living retirees and aged members in families that trust their parents would receive better care here. "In an increasingly modern Thai society, there is a growing number of affluent Thai baby boomers planning for active ageing without relying on assistance from their family members on retirement. This will translate into demand for senior homes in the future," she adds. Dexter Norville, Director of Property and Asset Management at JLL. Had this 74

to say "While several Thai developers have realized a potential growth in demand from both foreigners and Thais for luxury retirement homes in Thailand, the lack of knowhow to develop, operate, manage and market senior housing estate is a big challenge." He believes that there remains a lot of room for the luxury senior housing market to grow in Thailand and good potential would be for local developers to form joint ventures with international specialists in this market. One Thai company that has done exactly that is Sansara. Based in Bangkok, Sansara has recently opened their new active retirement community on 14.5 rai of land that abuts the highly acclaimed PGA Black Mountain Golf Course in the Royal Resort city of Hua Hin. They have partnered with the Australian company IMG Group who own and manage twenty active retirement centers in Australia as well as in Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia India and China. Sansara and IMG have worked closely together since the projects inception. IMG has assisted in defining the services and facilities, have helped with the sales and marketing efforts, the operational implementation and will continue with
ongoing operational management. Sansara offers villas and apartments. Their golf course view pool villas feature two bedrooms and a study with approximately 256 to 277 sqm’s of living space. Their luxury apartments are two bedrooms or two bedrooms and a study ranging in size from 117 to 143 sqm’s in size. Thailand is famed for its incredible levels of service. Sansara is taking this further by ensuring your every need is met in a luxury hotel style environment. It is quite common now to hear that this development or that development offers “5 Star Service” and Sansara claims the same, however they have backed up that claim by bringing on Mr. Hans Van Steertegem as their general manager. Hans career spans over 3 decades of delivering only the very best service in some of the most prestigious hotels and resorts around the globe. In line with the 5 Star lifestyle, Sansara owners enjoy incredible services, such as their Airport VIP Meet and Greet. A VIP Meet and Greet representative will be waiting for you as you disembark from your flight. They will guide you through a fast-track immigration counter, assist with luggage collection, whisk
you through customs, and bring you to Sansara in a private car. This service is available to Sansara Residents up to twice per year. Each villa or apartment lease comes with two free rounds of golf at Black Mountain Golf Course each week (weekdays), leaving only the cart fee (unless you prefer to walk) and the caddy fee to be paid. Each villa or apartment lease comes with two free massage treatments each week. Two times each week Sansara’s Housekeeping team will clean your home at a time convenient for you. You will have free shuttle by golf cart to the Black Mountain Golf Club and by van to and from Hua Hin’s town center. For those Residents who have a need for it, Sansara provides access to personal assistance services. For a nominal fee a team member can help with light house tasks, personal assistance, preparing meals, shopping, or driving. At Sansara Hua Hin they want to assist their Residents in living a healthy lifestyle. Their team will provide wellness activities which can include: Yoga and Tai Chi classes, Meditation and relaxation techniques, Aqua aerobics classes, Circuit training and fitness classes, hiking and trekking as well as
a host of other activities. Furthering the wellness focus, Sansara provides a free annual health check and offers preferential rates for health insurance and medical services with savings up to 25%. Each home at Sansara is equipped with an INS LifeGuard SmartHome IPD unit, a unique, patented system that puts Personal Emergency Response, TeleHealth and Home Automation right at your fingertips. But it’s not just about health, Sansara is also about a sense of community, getting to know your neighbors. The Sansara Team will organize a host of activities, guided by the Residents preferences. If you have friends or family coming to visit, Sansara has guest suites available, conveniently located within the Sansara community. Each villa or apartment is entitled to make use of these facilities 3 nights each year free of charge, with remaining nights charged at discounted rates. Sansara has been designed in such a way that home ownership is about as stress free as it can be. They take care of all your maintenance, both outside and inside your home. Living at Sansara truly means all these small things remain small things and seamlessly happen
behind the scenes. Additionally, they make home ownership and selling your home incredibly easy with two different purchase options. You can have a lifetime lease with a guaranteed refund of your purchase price at any time after your third year of ownership. You’ll never have to worry about reselling your property or managing transfers. Sansara also gives you the option of a lifetime lease with a shared capital gain when you choose to sell. Either option is completely up to you. Sansara rethinks how living should be. They believe it is the people and the place that makes the home. Their focus is on providing luxurious accommodation, a thriving community and full-service hospitality. They understand it is the little details that make the difference in terms of comfort, ease and aesthetics. Spencer Property Service
H
ua Hin resident Spencer Wray grew up in a town called Reigate in the UK. His father owned several businesses including a construction company. Growing up Spencer learned the construction business from the ground up. The projects they were hired to do were quite varied, from refurbishing houses, restaurants, pubs and hotels to nightclubs. In the year 2,000 Spencer moved to Hua Hin and built his own home and a few others. In 2012 he moved to Bangkok where he got a job with the company Saville’s and for two and a half years he oversaw the maintenance on 5,000 condominiums they had under contract. At the same time he was going to night school to learn project management and he also met his future wife. In 2014 Spencer and his wife moved back to Hua Hin where they started building their SPS company. HOT Hua Hin Magazine recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Spencer to find out more about his company and its capabilities. HM: Spencer, managing the maintenance on 5,000 condominiums must have been constant motion for you. What do you think you gained from that experience? SW: Bangkok was fabulous for me. Not only did I meet my wife there but I learned so much. I controlled a workforce of 500 employees and
76
HOT Magazine
contractors. I interfaced with customers, clients and even embassy officials. My takeaway from that time period was that I learned the importance of customer service. It was a crazy time as the work pace was a lot quicker than it is here in Hua Hin. HM: When did you start your Spencer’s Property Services, otherwise known as SPS? SW: SPS was started in Hua Hin in 2010. I slowed the business down whilst I was in Bangkok but then we came back with a vengeance!! My wife works with me and we are such a good team, she picks up on the things I miss and viceversa. HM: Does SPS specialize in certain areas or can your company handle any type of construction project? SW: We don’t specialize in any one particular area. We are called on to do a lot of revamping of older houses, building extensions, building outside kitchens, BBQ areas and car ports. We can handle most types of construction projects that come our way. We tend to stay away from the larger development projects because they take up too much of our time. l like to see job satisfaction on the faces of our clients when we are in and out of a project in a month or so. HM: What are some of the most requested jobs you are getting from your clients lately? SW: Some of our most requested jobs are kitchen re-painting, landscaping,
problem solving leaks and getting a house ready to be put on the market for sale. Probably our number one most requested job is kitchen refits with the newer units that are now available in Thailand coming in from Australia and the U.S., along with fitting new white goods, marble worktops, tiling and decorating. We even excavated an old swimming pool and fitted a new one. HM: Hua Hin’s property boom happened ten years ago in 2007, are you finding that you are getting more requests from homeowner’s who want their house brought up to current standards and touched up with a little TLC? SW: Yes, that is exactly what is happening. There are a lot of good property’s out there that just need a little bit of attention to become really great properties. HM: Hua Hin is going through an interesting transformation in that not only are we continuing to be a retiree paradise with baby boomers buying retirement homes in Hua Hin but also younger couples with children are buying homes here. Have you been called upon by either of those groups to retrofit houses purchased? SW: Yes, recently we have been asked to baby proof a house that entailed us reworking cupboards, sockets and installing a glass barrier around the swimming pool. On the other side of the age spectrum we have recently taken a property and made it all one level and
installed hand rails in bathrooms and the pool for an older couple who have come to Hua Hin to retire. HM: Of all the projects that you have taken on over the years, do you have a favorite and if so, why? SW: That’s easy. The best project we have done to date is for a gentleman named Eddie in Palm Hills. Eddie wanted to use all teak wood in his remodel which is quite expensive. We did a lot of work at his home, no expense was spared on the project and it shows. HM: When buying a new house, most developers offer a one or two year construction guarantee. Do you offer a guarantee on the work your company does and if so how many years is it? SW: The guarantee on all my work is 2-5 years depending on the project. We stand behind our work and should a problem arise my team and I will rectify it as my reputation and good name is at stake. HM: Do you work only in Hua Hin and Cha Am or do you accept jobs further out geographically? SW: We have gone as far as Petchaburi in the North and Sam Roi Yod in the South. If it’s a big job we will go further. We are fortunate to be inundated with work in the local vicinity however after seeing the work we had done for a client in Hua Hin he has asked us to refurb his condo in Bangkok. HM: Do you have a website or Facebook page where people can see some of the projects you’ve done? SW: I have a Facebook page which I have found easier for people to see my work and for me to update. On Facebook search for @Spennyservices or search Spencers Property Services. HM: What is the best way for a potential client to get in touch with you? SW: There are 2 ways really, potential clients can call me on my mobile, 091 871 0128 or send me an email at “spencerspropertyservices@hotmail. com.” Most people send emails with pictures explaining what they wish to do before we meet, which is helpful. HM: When you are not working, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time? SW: At the moment I don’t have much spare time as I’m the father of an 11-month-old girl that’s just starting to walk so I’m mostly chasing her around the house. One day a month I might be able to go golf with friends, if I’m lucky! HM: Thank you Spencer for taking time out of your busy day to speak with us.
