lamping — that trendy portmanteau of “glamour” and “camping” — may be a contemporary phenomenon, but the concept of sturdy, comfortable tents has been around for centuries; just ask Genghis Khan! If Genghis were around, he probably would have bought a VVIP ticket to Glamping Festival 2020. Over the weekend of October 23rd & 24th, the festival, held in Hua Hin, saw a stylish camping atmosphere filled with live music and entertaining activities enjoyable for the entire family. Those attending the two-day festival saw concerts by famous artists such as Atom Chanakan, Burin Boonvisut, J Jetrin, Jaonaay Jinjett, Oat Pramote, Pop Pongkool, Aof Pongsak, Two Popetorn, Wan Thanakrit, and Tom Isara. If you were like Genghis and didn’t have a ticket, put on your glamping attire and turn to page 28 to see all you missed. The Miss Universe Pageant is the largest in the world in terms of live TV coverage, airing yearly in more than 190 countries to an audience of over 500 million people. On Saturday, October 10th at Bangkok’s True ICON Siam Hall, 29 women competed for the title of Miss Universe Thailand and the opportunity to represent Thailand globally at the Miss Universe Pageant. The theme for the pageant this year was “Real you, Real Universe,” and “Empowering Beauty.” Pull out your most glamourous gown or your trendiest tuxedo and turn to page 36 to see which gorgeous Thai woman will represent the Kingdom in this year’s competition.

Historically and culturally, elephants in Thailand have played a significant role. They were crucial in manual labour, war, royal iconography, and the tourism industry. This month, HOT Magazine Contributor, Michael Cullen, takes us to Elephant Haven, a 50-acre Elephant Preserve, 45 minutes West of Kanchanaburi in the Sai Yok Region. Elephants here, like so many across Thailand, were used for trekking and tourism shows. However, in 2015 that changed. The Sai Yok Elephant Park owner, working in conjunction with Lek Chailert, the founder of The Save Elephant Foundation, decided to change the whole business model and retired the elephants. Now, free from their forced labour, the elephants live “saddles off” and “chains free,” roaming together in nature while foraging, playing in the mud, and swimming in the river, thus creating Elephant Haven. Guests now come to observe these gentle giants, to help staff care for their daily needs, and simply spend time in their company. No more carrying or entertaining people for these great pachyderms. Dig out some old clothes (you’re going to get wet) and turn to page 50 to see just how much these great Pachyderms are enjoying their life in retirement. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month’s issue; we hope you enjoy the read.

L et’s Meet,

Dylan Counsel What is your full name and age? My name is Dylan Counsel… I am aged 41 but for the record still feel 25! What is your current Job Position? I am the General Manager for Holiday Inn Vana Nava Hua Hin. How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? I am no stranger to our lovely seaside town. I had lived and worked in Hua Hin previously for 3 years between 2007 – 2010. Before returning again in 2020. In addition, during the time when I was working away from Hua Hin, the destination has always been a favorite holiday getaway for my family who enjoy our time staying at InterContinental or Holiday Inn Vana Nava Hua Hin. What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? Importantly I was aware Hua Hin was the summer home of the late King, His Royal Highness Bhumibol Adulyadej. And for that reason, I know the destination has a special place in the hearts of Thai’s and expats who call Thailand home. I also knew Hua Hin was a favorite holiday destination for the domestic market which helps support the local economy. What do you like most about your profession? Two words. Very simple… People & Service. I am honored to be involved in an industry that allows me to work professionally while experiencing new countries and cultures. I have grown personally as a result of meeting so many wonderful people related to the hotel business whether it be getting to know many of our wonderful resort guests, being inspired daily by my motived staff team, working closely with owners, senior company leaders or coordinating with the many third parties including, media, suppliers and local community organizations related to hotels. I am passionate about service. There is something very satisfying about seeing guests depart and feeling they had a wonderful experience while stay-

14

HOT Magazine

ing Holiday Inn Vana Nava. I believe service is the ultimate honor and just as we all like to ensure guests coming to our home are looked after, I try to apply that same approach to guests checking into my hotel. What do you like least about your profession? I take the approach that when you love what you do, your work becomes part of your day to day lifestyle. With this in mind the very few negative parts of the role, usually present an opportunity to self-reflect and look at ways to get better and to build a further understanding of a situation. In the end of the day the very few negative parts of the role, end up as an opportunity to convert to a positive… But if you really want to push me on this question, I would have to say one negative is the hotel food!!! I know what you are thinking right?… Hotel food is usually so good! Why would I consider that as a negative you may ask? Hotel food is usually delicious, well presented and creative… As a GM, I have the difficult task to work closely with my executive chef who normally asks me to try new menu items, food ideas and changes to improve our current offering almost daily… that inevitably results in me eating way too much which isn’t good for my waistline… Holiday Inn and Vana Nava Sky is no exception for delicious food and a GM who has to stay active just to keep off the extra kilos! What do you like most about Hua Hin? I like to remain active both socially and recreationally. I find Hua Hin has an equally active community. So whether it is a round of golf at one of the many amazing courses together with colleagues or friends, a game of tennis at True Arena Hua Hin, some quick shopping with my lovely wife at BluPort Mall or a drink with friends visiting from Bangkok at Vana Nava Sky, Hua Hin has a great range of venues and facilities which match my preferred lifestyle perfectly.

What is your favorite restaurant and why? (please don’t promote your own restaurants) As I have only returned to Hua Hin recently, I am yet to rediscover some of the great established outlets and new restaurants in Hua Hin. I will be sure to get myself out and about moving forward to discover some of the many wonderful dining venues. In the mean time I have been enjoying some of the delicious dishes at Pirom which is located at InterContinental Hua Hin Resort. What do you like to do in your free time and why? I have a six year old boy, named Finn who loves music. In particular rock music including some of the all time classic bands. My Son, Finn and I will often try to find a venue where there is a band playing in order for him to listen to some live music and every now and again get up on stage to sing. In order to try and keep up with Finn, I am also learning the guitar in my spare time. I enjoy a round of golf. Although my scores never give me a reason to celebrate, I enjoy getting out with colleagues or friends for a not so serious round at Banyan, Black Mountain or Palm Hills. Other than enjoying music with my son, golf with friends, my lovely wife Kh Kookkai and I enjoy wellness and exercise. You may spot us out on the tennis court at True Arena Hua Hin or enjoying a Thai boxing lesson with one of the local experts followed by a late afternoon sunset signature cocktail at Vana Nava Sky. What would you recommend to new-comers to do in Hua Hin and why? As I still consider myself a newcomer to the destination, I might not be the best person to ask for recommendations… That said I believe Hua Hin has some fantastic local food options to try whether it be at the Night Market, walking the beach or in one of the small roadside shops which specialize in selling one or two delicious menu items…

My lovely wife, Kh Kookkai has already found many of the great hidden gems in Hua Hin and I am sure she would be delighted to share her recommendations with those new to Hua Hin. For those who are here with family or enjoy a bit of adventure, a stay in Hua Hin is not complete without a visit to the Vana Nava Water Jungle. An amazing jungle themed water park with slides perfect for kids and for adults into a bit of thrill seeking. All in all, a great afternoon or full day to be had there. Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you? I am currently approximately 60-70% fluent in speaking Thai and have a desire to learn reading and writing which I am currently working on. I believe firmly that as an expat privileged to live in Thailand (and hopefully planning to be here for the long term), I want to make the effort to learn the language. What I have found is that my understanding and appreciation of Thai culture has grown immeasurably in conjunction with my Thai language development. For those speaking Thai, please feel free to correct me for any words or tones I pronounce incorrectly when meeting you in person. The other cool fact, is that I am lucky enough to be married to Mrs. Thailand 2016. Kh Kookkai won that competition a few years ago and you may still see her from time to time in some of the pageant events as a judge or participant held in Hua Hin or Bangkok.

im Sum that highly social Chinese breakfast brunch or lunch offering can be found in specialist restaurants in major city Chinatowns across the world. Hong Kong is often heralded as the epicentre of Dim Sum restaurants. For Hua Hin residents and visitors, the great news is you don’t have to travel that far to indulge. Hilton Hua Hin’s White Lotus Restaurant offers a highly authentic Dim Sum every Sat-

urday and Sunday lunch. More about that in a moment. Dim Sum, a meal of small plates, is best enjoyed with tea in the company of family and friends. The cuisine is most closely associated with the teahouse culture of Guangdong Province (formerly Canton) and Hong Kong. Hundreds of years ago, travellers along the Silk Road and weary rural farmers would frequent local teahouses for rest and conversation accompanied by a

cup of tea. When the teahouses began serving small food offerings with a patron’s tea, the seeds for today’s Dim Sum tradition were planted. Literally translated Dim Sum means “to touch the heart” and is often associated with another Cantonese phrase “yum cha” meaning “to drink tea.” So, when people say “let’s do yum cha”, they’re really saying “let’s go eat Dim Sum!”.

Alighting on the 17th floor and entering White Lotus Restaurant, you are immediately taken by the uninterrupted ocean, beach and Hua Hin district views thanks to the expanse of floor to ceiling glass. A wow factor in itself. Marble floors and feature wall panels, elegant Chinese busts, staff liveried in red and black Chinese style, crisp white table linen and silver chopstick rests, all add to the sense that you have arrived somewhere special.

Specialising in Szechuan and Cantonese cuisines, the rooftop White Lotus Restaurant opens evenings Tuesday through Sunday with an extensive menu including specialities like Peking Duck. Lunch is only offered on Saturday and Sunday, specifically for Dim Sum. Ong Eng Kok, Hilton Hua Hin’s Executive Sous Chef, oversees all of the hotel’s kitchens with Chef Sai in control of the White Lotus culinary team. And to keep things fresh, the Chefs

have just updated the Dim Sum menu. Typically, in many of the large Chinese Dim Sum restaurants, pushcarts are wheeled around the tables with diners choosing what’s on offer or waiting for other circulating carts. As is the format, a one-page list-style menu sits on the table, and the server marks the items received.

Though White Lotus does not have pushcarts circulating, it does have an order form-menu on the tables for diners to select the items and number of dishes they want to try. These are prepared in the kitchen and delivered steaming hot and fresh to your table. And as White Lotus Dim Sum offering is an ‘all you can eat’ for the set price of THB 580 nett per person, you can work your way through the twenty-nine listed savoury dishes, appetite permitting. Exceptional value, and as we discovered, excellent quality and variety. Here are some of our highlights. Though don’t limit yourself to these as there are just so many tasty options. Found on most Dim Sum menus, Siu-Mai is an open-topped steamed dumpling in a yellow wonton wrapper. And with three varieties on offer – crab, prawn, and scallop, we had to try them all, and they did not disappoint. Siu-Mai is said to have originated from Hohhot in Inner Mongolia.

Har Gow, or steamed prawn dumplings are delicate near translucent rice flour wrappers stuffed plump with prawn meat, pork fat, and bamboo shoots. Juicy, springy and full of juice. Often considered the KING of Dim Sum. A mixed plate of the deep-fried spring rolls, turnip cakes and shrimp cakes and the fried prawn dumplings wrapped in bean curd were beautifully presented on a black slate plate with carved tomato garnish. They tasted as delightful as they looked. Another Dim Sum classic is the BBQ pork buns (char siu bao). These glistening white steamed pillows were super fluffy and stuffed plump with BBQ pork on the inside, and slightly sweet and sticky. Delicious! Steamed rice rolls (Cheong fun) is another Dim Sum favourite. Rice flour water is splashed onto a hot metal grill and steamed creating the white noodle. Ingredients can vary however for White Lotus there are three option – duck, seaweed and minced prawn, and a vegetable roll. Then it’s covered in a light soy sauce, and you pull it apart with your chopsticks. A most satisfying dish.

with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a major in economics, Amanda impressed the judges as much with her brains as her beauty. One of the many perks of winning the title is the Mouawad Crown that goes with it. Mouawad is a jeweler to royalty, high society, and the uberrich, and has been for more than 120 years. Last year Mouawad entered into a partnership with the Miss Universe Organisation. For Miss Universe Thailand, they provided a resplendent crown valued at 3.5 million baht. This year’s crown has the design theme of “Power of Authenticity,” recalling the traditional motif of headwear worn by Ayutthaya nobility and intricate patterns of Thai temples. It is decorated with red, white, and blue gems to signify the Thai flag. Miss Universe Thailand first Runnerup was Praveenar Singh, a Thai of Indian descent from Chiang Mai province. The second runner-up was Punika Kulsoontornrut from Prachuap Khiri Khan province. Ms. Praewwanich Ruangthong was 3rd runner-up, and Alexandra Hänggi 4th runner-up.

Up Close and Personal – Elephant Haven, Kanchanaburi

T

hai guide ‘Patrick’ announced “You’ll have seven elephants for company today. They’re aged from 65 to 28 and are all female.” And as he finished outlining the schedule for our day, he adds “We’ve been seven months without visitors, and you are our first guests. Thank you for booking our tour today.” We had just settled into Elephant Haven’s comfortable minivan from our central Kanchanaburi pickup, and I

50

HOT Magazine

needed to take a moment to absorb that information while trying to process the mixed emotions I was feeling. There was definitely a sense of elation as I was finally visiting an elephant sanctuary that promised time with rescued elephants free to just be, well, elephants. And we would have seven of them for company. “How cool is that,” I thought. Then sadness took over – no customers for that many months. How has the business, its workers, the

elephants, just everybody coped and survived? So as our 45-minute drive to Elephant Haven progressed, we quizzed Patrick on all of these questions. We learn that with 50 acres of land, the sanctuary in the Sai Yok region west of Kanchanaburi has adequate space for the elephants, and a ready supply of natural vegetation to feed on. Some of the property is set aside for planted crops like banana and sugar cane for

additional food supplies. The mahouts (elephant carers) have remained on site for the day-to-day attention and management of the elephants. We hear how from 1997 to 2015 the elephants here, like so many across Thailand, were used for trekking, and tourism shows. We learn how the Sai Yok Elephant Park owner, working in conjunction with the ‘Save Elephant Foundation’ founder Lek Chailert,

made the decision to change the whole business model. Retiring the elephants, young and old, from their labours to live ‘saddles off’ and ‘chains free’ roaming together in nature while foraging, playing in the mud, and swimming in the river. Thus creating Elephant Haven. Guests now come to observe these gentle giants. To help staff care for their daily needs, and simply spend time in

their company as they enjoy retired life. No more carrying or entertaining people for these great pachyderms. Once on the ground at Elephant Haven, it was straight to work for us. We, are in essence, taking over some the tasks mahouts must do in the daily care of their charges. Given that an elephant consumes 150–300 kilograms of food a day and can feed up to 18 hours a day, a consistent supply is essential.

Dishing out pineapple plants is how we get to meet our new companions, and immediately glimpses of their personalities appear. The youngest “Chopper” at 28 is in the middle and happy to grab what’s on offer while stealing plants from “Lamyai” and “Pimjai.” Elephants we learn, are social animals, and these three keep together in their own little herd. While “Mali,” “Boonmee” and “Ngern Dam” make up the other mini herd. At 68 “Thong Koon” is the grand dame and tends to keep to herself, though her mahout is always close by to help and keep a watchful eye.

rice-banana balls, as managing their diet is all part of the care process. These treats combine cooked rice with peeled and mashed banana, generous doses of salt and rice husks giving protein, fibre, calcium and carbs – all in one baseballsized hit. And aren’t we well-received when it’s time to dish out these tasty treats.

Our mahout duties don’t stop there. Next, we cut and quartered fresh watermelon sufficient to fill eight massive baskets. Then comes the making of

Patrick provides guidance on walking in safety when around the elephants, especially when walking

For their wellbeing, elephants need between seven and thirteen kilometres of exercise a day, and that’s how our morning proceeds, accompanying our new friends as they graze bushlands immediately adjacent to Elephant Haven’s riverside camp.

behind. They can’t see you and may stop unexpectedly and we don’t want to spook them, he explains. They like contact with humans but also like space to feed and just do their thing. This can include turning massive tree trunks into scratching posts, and digging up the ground and using their trunk to cover their head and back with fresh soil. It seems that the dirt acts as sun protection and a form of natural cooling. After an hour or so of wandering, we return to camp for a delicious yet simple Thai vegetarian lunch, chat some more with Patrick and take in some of the information on the partnership Elephant Haven has with Lek Chailert and her Save Elephant Foundation.

A native of far northern Thailand, Lek Chailert started working on elephant conservation in 1996, and now through her foundation, oversees rescued elephant sanctuaries in Chiang Mai, Surin, Cambodia, and where we are in Kanchanaburi. For her work, Chailert has received numerous awards and recognitions, such as the Ford Foundation’s “Hero of the Planet” (2001), Time Magazine’s Heroes of Asia (2005), one of six Women Heroes of Global Conservation (2010), and the Responsible Thailand Award for Animal Welfare (2018). Her work was also featured in the 2018 movie documentary “Love & Bananas: An Elephant Story” produced and directed by Hollywood star Ashley Bell. Rested and fed, it was time to accompany our friends on their afternoon activities which starts with a visit to an elephant spa, one of their favourite mud baths. Chopper, Lamyai and Pimjai are certainly up for it while Mali, Boonmee, Ngern Dam and Thong Koon are happy to graze on new forest growth. As the youngest, Chopper can still get down and roll around in the mud while the others stand and use their trunks to spray mud all over themselves, and anything nearby.

Once satisfied with their mud play, they head off to the river for bath time. As Asian elephants can drink up to 200 litres of water per day, this river visit has very practical benefits for our jumbo friends. Guide Patrick once again provides some safety advice on how best to interact with them. It seems that Chopper can get a little too boisterous in the river, so her mahout looks after her. I can’t describe the jubilation I felt spending that time in the water and up so close with these giants. Unforgettable! Our afternoon finishes with another feeding session for the elephants back at camp. Patrick says this is a way for guests like us to thank our new friends for their company, and they readily accepted our food offerings. I’m aware and have read extensively on elephant tourism and how in the western countries there are very prominent campaigns to stop elephant riding and the domestication of wild elephants in countries like Thailand. It’s a vexed and complicated issue.

t times, one wishes not to travel too far from the centre to explore the beauty of the countryside and Thailand is one of the many countries in which that is possible. Not too far from the country’s capital of Bangkok is the fascinating province of Ang Thong in central Thailand. Located a mere one hundred and five kilometres away from Suvarnabhumi Airport, it is a perfect location to spend a few days to soak in its rich history and culture. Located by the calm Noi River and the famous Chao Phraya River, the

province of Ang Thong was previously known as Mueang Wiset Chai Chan. The province played a vital role during the eighteenth century at the glory of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. As a frontier outpost, this territory was mainly used to control the advances of the Burmese army during their Konbaung Dynasty, a time which saw several confrontations with the Kingdom of Siam. In all its might, Ang Thong was the last province to fall into the Burmese hands during the second Burmese-Siamese War from 1765 to 1767. It is situated right next to Sing Buri, where the fa-

mous resistance battle of the village of Bang Rachan took place, an event dear to Thai traditional culture as a demonstration of heroic determination. Dearest still, is the fact that Ang Thong was the hometown of the brave officers Nai Dok and Nai Thongkaeo, who led the aforementioned repel of the Burmese. Ang Thong is geographically a small province compared to those in the rest of the country and mostly consists of prosperous agricultural land. It is one of Thailand’s largest rice producers and is known for the quality of it. In fact, the name Ang Thong etymo-

logically means “Golden Bowl, which gives us an insight into the importance that this province has in an agricultural sense and attests to the quality of the golden coloured rice it produces. It is also thought to derive from the concave shape of the basin in which it lies. The province is most famous for the quantity of beautiful architectural structures and monuments that populate it with over two hundred magnificent and impressive temples. Wat Phinittammasan, is a very popular temple because of its old Viharns,

as they were constructed towards the latter end of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Equally impressive is the large plaster-made seated Buddha image in a posture which sees him undertaking a subduing Mara. It measures twelve metres in width and is thus an impressive sight to anyone’s eyes. Wat Muang is a must-see as it boasts the Big Buddha. This famous structure is the ninth-largest statue in the entire world. Painted in gold, it is made entirely out of cement and stands at an impressive ninety-two metres in height. It was constructed over a pe-

riod of eighteen years, beginning in 1990 and completing in 2008. Wat Saket, located in the Chayaphum by the Chao Phraya River, is a temple that dates back to the Kingdom of Ayutthaya. Previously named Ban Sa, it is mentioned in the royal chronicles that when Phrachao Chiangmai led the army to camp in Ban Saket, King Naresuan the Great and Somdet Phra Ekathotsarot led an incursion to defeat Chaingmai. His Majesty, King Bhumibol, visited this Temple in 1970 to honour King Naresuan the Great.

Wat Inthapramun, located in the district of the same name, is also a renowned site that is very famous because of the reclining Buddha that it bears within its enclosure. This statue is the second largest in all of Thailand and is painted in a weathered white colour. This Temple was constructed during the Sukhothai period. Built in the 18th century is Wat Thanun. This site is known for the standing wooden Buddha inside that measures a commanding two metres in height. The curious activity that is carried out in this location is the paying of homage with the standing of eggs in front of the statue. Those who achieve such feat are said to be granted good fortune, and thus many travel to this location in order to have a go. While in Ang Thong, you’ll want to visit the drum making village. The name of the village is Ekkarat, and it is known for the artisans that hand-make drums. The drums’ quality is optimum, and the recent Four Star OTOP Award is proof of this. Drum beats are an essential and primordial part of Thai culture, and being able to make them is seen as a prestigious honour. Teachers of drum making are very highly regarded, held at the elite of Thai society. For this reason, a ceremony is held every year to honour the careers of past drum making masters. Ekkarat is genuinely a wonderful place to visit for those interested in the traditional Thai drum making industry.

One of the most extraordinary attractions of the area is Sang Kra Thai. This gem is one of the most special of them all as it combines nature with the eighteenth century’s architectural brilliance. The ruins of this beautiful Temple were the perfect blooming location of a number of large trees that grew engulfing the enclosure. Today it looks like a magnificently coalesced relationship that Mother Nature established with this sacred location. Intertwined around the walls, creeping up the edges, the vines and roots climb and cover most of the structure. As spring comes, the leaves flourish wonderfully, making it look like the bricks and cement always belonged there. Ang Thong boasts many festivals that occur annually. The more famous are Ngan Mueang U – Khao, U Nam, and the Annual Red Cross Fair, which is held late December to early January. Perhaps the most exciting festival is the Dragon Parade Procession, held in December of every year. This invites god Kuan-U to the Ang Thong Market and attracts many curious onlookers because of the extravagant parade.

In terms of accommodation, Ang Thong is an affordable place to go to, with small hotel prices ranging between four hundred to eight hundred baht a night. Do not expect too much luxury, as this is more of a place for outdoor cultural heritage instead of indoors extravagance. As a whole, Ang Thong is a small province of incredibly rich and diverse history, ranging back to the Kingdom of Ayutthaya. Be it to visit its many beautiful temples or indulge in its traditional drum making ceremonies, Ang Thong is a province you cannot afford to ignore in your Thai travel itinerary.
