he publication Lonely Planet is the largest travel guide book publisher in the world and is considered the ultimate resource before and during a trip. Recently it came out with its top destinations for 2019 and sitting at the very top was Sri Lanka, named Top Destination In The World. “Already notable to intrepid travellers for its mix of religions and cultures, its timeless temples, its rich and accessible wildlife, its growing surf scene and its people who defy all odds by their welcome and friendliness after decades of civil conflict, this is a country revived,” says Lonely Planet author Ethan Gelber in the Best in Travel 2019 book. Just 3.5 hours by air from Bangkok, tourist visits to Sri Lanka have increased dramatically since the end of the 26-year conflict, from 447,890 in 2009 to an all-time high of 2.1 million last year, a figure the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority hopes to double by 2020. Renovations made to the rail system have opened up Jaffna and much of north for the first time since 1990 – an area that was previously considered too dangerous for tourists. Pull out your suitcase and turn to page 44 to see why you should go and what you should see. Formula E is a type of auto racing that uses electric-powered cars that are capable of attaining speeds of up to 350 Km/h. The team owners are impressive and include the likes of Leonardo di Caprio, Richard Branson and Alain Prost. Formula E sets itself apart by boasting a philanthropic message: they're not in it for the glamour or the fame; they're in it to innovate the technology behind electric cars, subsequently making the world a better place for the rest of us. The ABB FIA Formula E Championship is anticipated to be the most intense as the fifth edition of the racing series began at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Ad Diriyah in Saudi Arabia on the 14th of December. It was the first race for the championship in the Middle East and the first for the series’ exciting new Gen 2 cars. Against the backdrop of international skylines such as New York, Hong Kong, Paris and Rome, drivers will race across five continents in a bid to be crowned champions. Dig out your crash helmet and turn to page 58 to find out why this is a race series you should follow.

Superlatives marked the 7th Annual Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show where the weather was phenomenal and the new boats were equally impressive. In its 7th year and bigger than ever, this year’s show contained both in-tent and in-water displays from a multitude of boat manufacturer’s and types of craft from dreamy luxury yachts on one end of the spectrum to inflatable boats on the other, along with plenty of water toys. The boats on display represented the latest in design and styling trends, along with new technologies and innovations. Under blue skies, the popular outdoor marina front format was conducive to four days of business and leisure as over 6,500 visitors from more than 20 countries attended the show. Fish out your deck shoes and turn to page 64 to decide upon your next yacht. The 32nd Phuket King’s Cup, Asia’s biggest and most prestigious sailing regatta, was held at the Beyond Resort Kata in early December. The event lasted eight days with the focus on keelboats, multihulls and sailors, both international and Thai nationals. In the course of 32 years, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta has gained a reputation as both a highly competitive event on the water featuring some of the world’s best boats, skippers and crews, as well as a fun social occasion where visitors enjoy the traditional warm Thai hospitality in one of the best holiday destinations in the world. This year was no different. Since you’re already wearing your deck shoes, just turn to page 72 to see why you should attend the 33rd annual event next year Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month’s issue of HOT. B

eachcombing has been a favourite activity ever since childhood. You never know what you will find, but it’s the activity that brings joy. Looking out for treasures. Searching for that something just a little extra special. Perhaps you will score a unique find. That was the task this writer was challenged with recently. The venue for this search was beachside at InterContinental Hua Hin Resort. To reach our destinations, we

wandered through the Resort’s gardens guided by twinkling fairy lights, and at this time of year, the vibe was enhanced by distinct Christmas lighting displays. Reaching the oceanfront, before us was a pop-up restaurant quite literally on the beach. Pine coloured traditional picnic-style tables, and chairs set up, right on the sand. Lanterns and strings of lights illuminated the space. Cool tunes provided by the resident DJ and her Saxophonist duo partner created a sophisticated ambience.

Chefs were tending to a whole pig roasting over hot coals. Others were making fresh Som Tam salads. Yet more slicing glistening fresh salmon for the Sashimi and Sushi display. Lamb chops, fresh squid, prawns and other favourites were lovingly tended to on another BBQ. This was indeed was a surprise. Our beachcombing inclinations were being challenged, so what else could we do but accept the invitation to dig in and explore.

Wherever we looked at the buffet, there was a treasure trove of tasty treats. Selections of salads from Thai classics, to couscous, or Mediterranean seafood salad, along with all the ingredients to make your own. Another table groaned under the weight of ice-laden boats filled with fresh cooked and chilled seafood like mussels, scallops and prawns. Large clay pots with flames flickering underneath filled another table and provided a selection of hot foods from Thai and other Asian cuisines, a range of cooked seafood

including a delicious Seafood Paella. Collections of hot cooked vegetables, potato wedges, small Arancini (rice) balls, sautÊed mushrooms all awaiting your plate. The chefs are ever ready to barbecue any of the raw seafood – fish fillet, slipper lobster, prawns, or clams as soon as you ask. A succulent side of roasted beef caught my eye and had to be sampled with the chef adding a tasty pepper infused sauce to my plate as if they were partners that could not be separated.

For our party, it was decided that the best way to explore these tables of food treasures was slowly, and frequently. Taking small morsels and savouring. Once that plate was empty, the search for other treasure started. Staff were attentive and assisted with our drink selections as well as keeping the table tidy. The DJ and saxophonist kept the ambience going while the tide receded and the evening stars became brighter. At least for our party, a meal is never complete without desserts. Thankfully tables of sweet treats

were waiting for our exploration. Petit serves of Crème Brulee, chocolate crepes, tropical fruit tarts, eclairs, chocolate brownies, mini carrot cakes, and a selection of glazed doughnuts to mention some of the collection set out for our pleasure. Add to that sliced tropical fruits and a choice of four or five of the hotel’s own ice-creams. All of which added up to dessert heaven! Intercontinental Resort Hua Hin’s Beachcomber BBQ happens every Friday evening from 6.30 pm to 10.00 pm. Priced at THB 1,899 net per

person. This includes one welcome cocktail as well as soft drinks and fruit juices for the evening. Alcohol packages are available or just order your preferred beverage. As part of the overall package, dinner guests are also treated to their own private beach ‘Fire Show’ each Friday evening. It happens around 8:30 pm and involves an exceptionally energetic and skilled troupe of five or six fire twirlers, literally lighting up the skies and beachfront for a full fifteen minutes.

If tides prohibit, the Beachcomber BBQ is moved onto the lawns immediately overlooking the beach and adjacent to the Azure restaurant. No matter which location, the treasure trove of food, outstanding outlook, and relaxed vibe are truly memorable. For bookings or additional information contact the hotel on +66 (0) 32 616 999. What is your full name and age? Pierre-Antoine Jullien and I am 31 years old

What is your current Job Position? Resort Manager at Anantara Hua Hin Resort

How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? I have been here for 7 months now and it is my first assignment in Asia

What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? Honestly, nothing much, just that it was the place where the king used to spend a lot of time and that the city is known for golfing and seafood.

What do you like most about your profession? I think what I enjoy the most is to work with a team of different backgrounds to drive them to a common goal. Ultimately to of course, make sure that our guests are looked after and leave our resort with stories to share.

What do you like least about your profession? It will be pretentious to say that I enjoy everything about my job so if I would have to highlight something it would be the time we spend on emails nowadays. When I have started hospitality, it was not as much and it takes away the time I can spend with the team and the guests.

What do you like most about Hua Hin? The tranquility and the “human” size of the city. I love the fact to be able to be in 5 minutes in the middle of the hills and the green where you do not feel being in a city anymore. The people are also great here, very welcoming and genuine, it makes the way living here much easier than anywhere else.

What is your favorite restaurant and why? (please don’t promote your own restaurants) I do not really have a favorite restaurant in town to be honest as I still have much to discover. However, I went twice to Phetchaburi and stopped by Ple Yuan Restaurant, it is a local Thai restaurant and I was amazed by the food, I have to say that it is my favorite Thai so far.

What do you like to do in your free time and why? I enjoy running and bicycling. Taking my bicycle around for a few hours enable be to discover the surroundings of Hua Hin (which are beautiful by the way) with the different farms, markets, small villages, restaurants… Riding my bicycle is a big plus for me as with our job we tend to have our head down and always work, and the cycling allows me to relax while learning about the area where I live.

What would you recommend to new-comers to do in Hua Hin and why? I would advise them to go around to discover all the little places that exist, it could be a restaurant, a market, a shop, a bar… The city has plenty to offer but you need to spend time to go around and find them. Going to the touristic places is of course a must, especially at the beginning but I think the local places have much more to offer, especially with the people from Hua Hin who are welcoming, friendly and genuine.

Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you? I have lived up in the mountains all my life, and I used to be a ski instructor before in order to pay my hospitality studies. Snow and ski is part of me and I need to go back at least once a year in order to get back to the cold and remind myself where I come from.

What is the most outlandish thing you have ever done and why? It is hard to say but I would say that it is when I have dressed up as a woman for the last staff party I have attended in Oman (before moving to Thailand). I wanted to do something funny for the team and I have to say that they loved it very much. I think it is important not to take ourselves seriously and to show the teams that even though we are their managers, we can do crazy things and have fun with them.

True Arena Hua Hin Hosts The 2018 IBF Silk Road Champions & IBF World Muay Thai

T

he 2018 IBF Silk Road Champions Tournament & IBF World Muay Thai Championship was held in TRUE Arena Hua Hin, Thailand on December 8th. The event was the start of IBF Belt & Road Region's (IBF B&R) new journey in Belt and Road countries. There were 4 Eliminator bouts in the games. Thailand boxer Pipat Chaiporn and Filipino fighter Eugene Lagos competed for the qualification of Junior Featherweight of IBF Silk Road Champions Tournament Finals and they ended with a tie after 10 rounds. Japanese boxer Ryo Takenaka defeated Filipino fighter Lorence Rosas on Junior

Lightweight Eliminator in the end of the 5th round. Thai boxer Komsan Polsan won the final qualification of Junior Middleweight after overcoming Uzbek fighter Dostonbek Turdiev in the event. Thai fighter Sukpraserd Ponpitak conquered Filipino fighter Joseph Ambo in the Bantamweight Eliminator bout after 10 rounds' confrontation. The winners will compete with those who stood out from the last three promotion events which were held in Macau and Beijing successively. The game held in Hua Hin was the last event before the Finals in the 2018 season.

Wang Ruihang, president of IBF B&R, said, "IBF Silk Road Champions Tournament was carrying out the "Go Out" strategy under the guidance of the Belt and Road Initiative. Aside from Thailand, Russia, Japan, South Korea and North Korea, even some African countries bid for running of the IBF Silk Road Champions Tournaments." IBF B&R plans to increase the number of games held in countries and regions along the Belt and Road area from 2019 and will make the tournament an international platform for showing multiple cultures, embodying true level of professional boxing of relative

countries and even promoting the development of local sports industry and economy." In order to show the diverse culture, the committee of the games arranged a Cruiserweight IBF World Muay Thai Championship event as the last but the most important bout. Chinese Muay Thai fighter Li Baoming and his Thaicounterpart Thomas Carpenter competed for the IBF World Muay Thai title fiercely, and their strong confrontation provided the audience a great visual feast. After 5 rounds fighting, Thomas

Carpenter finally won the game and got the title. It's worth mentioning that the organizer arranged for traditional Muay Thai and music performances throughout the whole event which made those present feel immersed in the original local culture. Suwat Liptapanlop, the former Prime Minister of Thailand and the honorary Chairman of IBF Muay Thai, said, the Belt and Road Initiative was deeply rooted among Thai people and that holding the IBF Silk Road Champions Tournament in the country would further enhance the cultural communication, economic linkage

and people-to-people ties between Thailand and other countries along the Belt and Road. He said: "The tournament will not only promote the further development of Thailand's boxing industry and sports tourism, but it will also increase the attractiveness of Thailand tourism and enhance the social and economic prosperity in the country. Sport fans from all over the world will have the opportunity to know Thailand and spread Thai culture better."

This is the first time that the IBF Silk Road Champions Tournament was held in a country outside of China, it is also the first time for the operation team of the game - REJOY GROUP to carry out such a large event abroad. The energetic team with an average age of less than 30 years old has carried out large events like the 2016 IBF World Championship in Beijing, the 5th CCTV Chinese New Year Cup IBF World Championship and the 2017 IBF Silk Road Champions Tournament Finals in Macau over the last three years. Andrew Lu, Senior Vice President of REJOY GROUP, said: "Although this is our debut in foreign country, our team is an international and professional team. I think we were successful in Thailand and I believe the experience we accumulated in Thailand will be very useful for our team to manage and carry out better events in other countries." Jimmy Chaichotchuang, a Thai boxing promoter, thought the Chinese team's capability of organizing and running the professional boxing games grew very fast, and their specialty has gained more attention from western counterparts. He said: "Their capability of implementation is very strong, and their efficiency and strict demand for events' quality impressed me a lot. Now I have better understanding of how China can hold more than 100 games since IBF entered China in 2015."

elebrating 70 years of independence, Sri Lanka has just been named Lonely Planet’s Top Destination for 2019. With untouched golden beaches to discover, a kaleidoscopic landscape and its eclectic mix of different religions and cultures, Sri Lanka is finally coming on to its own.

and much of the north for the first time since 1990 – an area that was previously considered too dangerous for tourists. The scenic rail routes in Sri Lanka are now widely thought to be some of the best in the world. Motorways have also been built as far south as Matara, and the number of domestic flight routes has increased in recent years, too: for instance, from the capital Colombo, on the west coast, to Batticaloa, on the opposite side of the island, in 45 minutes.

Sri Lankans love food. Meal time is an extreme sport: big breakfasts, sumptuous dinners with wine, long lunches. Sri Lanka is famous for one dish: rice and curry. Which are more than two mundane dishes, mind you, the national dish is different with every cook and the local produce of the day. To coconut

milk in curries with seafood from bountiful coastlines, Sri Lankans add in even hotter chilies (the heat is often tempered for western palates, even in seemingly 'local' restaurants, so if you want your food authentically spicy, say so when ordering). The variety of side dishes include sweet-and-sour eggplant, velvety dahl, marinated snake beans, curried beetroot, okra, jackfruit or banana blossom...and be prepared for dessert. “Love cake” is made with semolina, ground cashews and honey, perfumed with nutmeg, cinnamon and rosewater. Try the locally popular bolo fiado, a layer cake of pastry, dried fruit and syrup. Another delicious delight is wattalappam, concocted from jaggery (brown sugar made from kitul palm), coconut milk, egg and cardamom. Try

out your spice limits with fish ambul thiyal and hoppers, a breakfast staple made with rice flour and coconut milk and best with a fried egg, then topped with chutney or spicy sambol. Sri Lanka’s surf scene has been steadily growing, as more of the coast has become accessible, and tour operators are now offering jungle hiking, alongside yoga breaks with traditional Ayurveda treatments. There are also plenty of free attractions, including colourful puja rituals on the clifftop of Koneswaram Kovil in Trincomalee in the north east; Colombo’s main market of Pettah; and the fortified walls surrounding the colonial old town of Galle in the south.

After decades of British colonial rule, the land once known as Ceylon exists as a small island in the Indian Ocean with an everchanging landscape running from elevated lush rainforests to white sand beaches. Not to mention the wildlife, such as the 300-strong elephant gathering at Minneriya national park, thousandyear old Buddhist monuments, and hiking and train travel through the Hill Country’s tea plantations.

Sri Lanka has outstanding beaches and a few we think you shouldn't miss include:

Bentota Beach Bentota is a family-friendly beach with crystalline waters and a variety of water sports to try: water-skiing, jet-skiing, sailing and windsurfing, all available year round. And if you’re brave enough, try a boat safari along the Bentota River and keep an eye out for aquatic birds, lizards and even crocodiles, especially if you visit in October-April.

Arugam Bay Beach

Bentota Beach

The waves on this beach can reach as high as 10 meters, making it a hotspot for surfers although the inner bay is lined with hotels and restaurants for non-surfers as well. The beach caters for a variety of experience levels and is an internationally renowned surfers’ paradise, attracting hordes of tourists from April to October every year. When the bay gets too crowded, escape to the small laidback town of Ella or visit the national parks Yala or Udawalawe.

Dickwella Beach A romantic hotspot for newlyweds on honeymoon, the beach also offers ideal conditions for swimming, snorkeling and even Sri Lankan lace making. Take the time to find the hidden jewel of Dickwella that is Hiriketiya Bay that is slowly gaining recognition as the surfers’ hangout. This horseshoe bay has waves for both beginners and the more advanced and little beach huts with amazing juices and banana pancakes. You can even watch sea turtles as you swim in the crystal clear ocean.

Arugam Bay Beach

Hikkaduwa Beach For the adventure enthusiasts, the coastal waters of Hikkaduwa are the place to be—for sunbathing, boating, scuba diving, snorkeling or surfing. From scrumptiously affordable seafood restaurants to garments of any sort, the Hikkaduwa beach has a long running ‘thumbs up’ reputation by its countless visitors. Especially during the high season this is the place to go for party lovers as there are many clubs and bars nearby. Make sure to check out the small turtle sanctuary in the area—learn about the sea turtles’ plight and obviously, the adorable baby turtles. Peak visiting months include November and April, however January to March is also recommended.

Mirissa Beach Awash with beautiful mussels and stones, Mirissa is less touristy in comparison to the other beaches however most tourists do visit for whalewatching and if they’re lucky, they can even spot blue whales during December to March. On New Year’s Eve, watch the sleepy beach town transform into a giant beach party. Parrot Rock divides the bay but don’t expect to see any parrots. Still, the best secret here is the Secret Beach, a tiny secluded beach with an incredible sunset view. It is recommended to visit in November to April, August to October. Dickwella Beach 38

Nilaveli Beach Located a bit out of town, the quiet beach is a gateway to Pigeon Island. The coral reef here is considered to be the best snorkeling spot in Sri Lanka—even reef sharks can be found among the exotic animas here. Nilaveli is all white sand and tropical snorkeling before settling at Trincomalee, the nearby town which served as a maritime base during the Second World War. The best time to visit Nilaveli would be between May and October.

Unawatuna Beach An ideal place for a beach getaway or sea-turtle watching, the popular resort is only 5 km far from the charming Dutch fort town Galle, a UNESCO Heritage Site. Unawatuna can be walked from end to end in 15 minutes but the white-sand beach offers calm waters and soft, sloping sand making it a great family choice, even if it’s not so great for surfing. Famous for its stunning sunsets, the coastline is decorated with pastel houses and handicraft stores—definitely visit around November to April. Surrounded on all sides by the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka has plenty of beautiful beaches for you to retreat to when the tropical temperatures get a bit too close for comfort. Every bit as aesthetic as you can imagine, long golden beaches offer an idyllic paradise with perfect t winds and waves.

Don’t just relax by the beaches though; Sri Lanka is an explorer’s paradise. The Golden triangle is where you’ll find Sri Lanka’s key historic sites, including Dambulla Cave Temples and Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Anuradhapura is a magical ancient city and home to a Bo tree descended from Buddha’s and thought to be 2000 years old. Kandy is a cultural attraction in its own right, boasting the iconic Temple of the Tooth along with multiple smaller temples and interesting attractions. Ella, high in the tea fields, is popular with visitors as is the southern capital of Galle. Even Jaffna is the new mustsee place, despite being inaccessible for so long as it lies in the far-north. The weather in Sri Lanka is a mixed bag – with a usual temperature of 28c year round people expect a hot and sunny climate. However, the hill country is much colder so packing for two seasons is essential. It also has two monsoon seasons, affecting different parts of the island at different times.

“Whether you’re a family traveller or an adrenaline junkie, a wellness seeker or a foodie,” says Lonely Planet spokesperson Chris Zeiher, “In Sri Lanka you’ll find all the magic you’d expect from South Asia bundled into a resurgent, medium-sized islandnation that’s friendly and - with improved tourism infrastructure and transportation - more accessible in 2019 than ever before.”

O

ften, a trip to Thailand involves Bangkok, beaches, elephants and if you’re lucky, a monkey. But away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities, far from the glittering (and mostly, crowded) beaches, lies the town of Lampang. The fifth largest city in Thailand, the city lies north of Bangkok, sharing a close proximity to another popular city, Chiang Mai. What makes Lampang so different from others? The town was founded in the 7th century and shares its history with Mon, Burmese and Lanna Thai cultures. Legend has it that the Buddha once visited Lampang but the king of the gods, Indra, was concerned that the people would not wake up in time to prepare his food. He descended from the heavens, in the form of a white rooster, to wake up the people. The provincial seal of Lampang shows a white rooster in his honor. Built in 680, the province of Lampang shares its name with the capital. Its history starts with the faith of a hermit who built the city for Prince Anatayot and named it Kelang Nakorn. It was colonized by Myanmar before it gained independence in 1736. 1300 years after it was created, Lampang finally become a province of Thailand in 1892. The province is surrounded by Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai in the north, forests and grasslands in the south. The climate is hot all year around, with temperatures rising the hottest during the month of April and lowest during January. At the height of the 19th century, Lampang was the center of the domestic and international teak trade. Their legacy remains standing as several of Thailand’s revered wats. Other than that, why not the food? Flip through the menu of any restaurant and find staples such as gaang kaa gòp (a herbladen soup with frog) or kôw đǎan (deep-fried rice cakes seasoned with watermelon juice and drizzled with palm sugar). Travel through the city in style or hike up with the locals to mesmerizing views. Find yourself unwinding as time slows down and you find yourself in the melting pot of Lampang’ rich culture; the fascinating history of Lampang pales only to the charming serenity it holds at present.

Wat Phra That Lampang Luang Arguably one of the most beautiful temples in Northern Thailand, this ancient Buddhist temple is thought to be the oldest-standing structure in the country since it was founded in the 13th century. About 20 km from Lampang, the temple rests on a walled fortress, built in the 8th century. The temple itself consists of several smaller buildings, each built in early Lanna and Thai Lü syle and housing immeasurable treasures such as murals, silver cases, gold-leafed figures and manuscripts. According to legend, the Buddha once visited the site around 2500 years ago and at present, a strand of his hair is now enshrined in the temple’s large chedi. Although it is not open to the public, the surrounding area is well worth the visit for its historical significance and aesthetics alone.

National Elephant Institute The institute was founded in1993 under Royal Patronage. The Thai Elephant Conservation Center (TECC) exists within the institute, both focused

on the rescue and rehabilitation of elephants. The area is 300-acres wide and consists of an elephant hospital and training school and there’s even a homestay service available so you can get all close to the elephants, or as much as they’ll let you. At the TECC Royal Elephant Stables, you can observe six of the late King Bhumibol’s ten white elephants. You can even take a course to know these gentle creatures, take an elephant-back ride and meet the babies.

Wat Chaloem Phra Kiat Phrachomklao Rachanusorn The trek to the floating temples takes almost as long as it will take you to recite the name but the views are mind-blowing and completely worth it. One of the best kept secrets of Thailand, it is tucked away 800 meters above in the mountains. Even though it’s not even written on the official tourist maps, getting to the temple is half the adventure with plenty to see along the way including traditional Thai villages, mountain viewpoints and waterfalls. The construction of the pagodas are said to be built piece by piece by a local Buddhist monk and

a team of 50 workers over a decade ago. It may not be as old as the other temples scattered all around Thailand but the devotion and the faith that stands as tall as the mountains around, these temples are definitely worth the secret.

Chae Son National Park Located 75 kilometres far from Lampang, the national park is the sanctuary to many caves and hot springs and the Chae Son waterfall, a six-layered waterfall. The lush national park is an ideal spot to unwind, the park offers accommodation from family size bungalows to youth hostels and camping options for visitors. The water here can reach 80100 °C which isn’t ideal for bathing but if you’re feeling peckish—enjoy a poolside snack, soft-boiled eggs from the hot spring itself! The park offers a relaxed atmosphere to those who wants to leave the wilder adventures for another day; the park has a variety of activities from walking through the hot springs or jumping into the refreshing coolness of the waterfalls. If you’re confused, there’s even a warm spring where the hot spring meets the Chae Son waterfall.

Tham Pha Thai National Park The park is the dwelling place of not only animals but also the Tham Pha Thai cave, with its picturesque stalactite and stalagmites. Moreover, there are waterfalls all over the park, ringed by high mountains, timber forests and teak plantations. En route to the park is the Emerald Pool—crystal clear water houses a school of catfish and an alluring charm that beckons you to jump in the seemingly bottomless pool. However, the mystery of the lagoon’s depth remains unsolved—locals believe the water is sacred so swimming and fishing is discouraged. Back to the park, several other attractions are yet to be fully explored, including Lomphukeaw, a hilltop basin, Kiw Lom Dam Lake with its rustic raft houses, Tham Chon, a small cave with three chambers and pre-historic paintings, believed to have been there for 2-3 thousand years.

Walking Street Walking street markets are a concrete jungle of local produce and alcohol but each walking street offers their own individual taste of their city. Don’t stray too far away, Lampang’s weekend market, Kad Kong Ta, takes place in one of the most attractive streets in the city. Close to Talad Gao, it is only open on weekends but take advantage of the less tourists then and get a real Thai experience. The stalls sell a variety of products, modern and traditional clothing, jewelry and household goods, plus try the cuisine of Northern Thailand and spot the differences in the ceramics display. Young artists’ practice their paintings, musicians perform for the public and other activities enliven the evening scene as the sun sets across the river and the night takes over.

Horse-drawn Carriages The name of Lampang, which is also called “mueang rot ma”, translates to “horse carriage city”. It is the last city in Thailand where you can still find horse-drawn carriages in regular use for transportation. Introduced in 1916, there are around 200 horse-drawn carriages in use. Travel back in time and look at Lampang as the locals did a century ago. The prices vary as you choose within 3 options—travelling through the minor town, the major town or renting the carriage per hour. As they say, if you haven’t travelled in a horse carriage, did you even visit Lampang? Overshadowed by its more popular neighbors, Lampang’s best attractions have unknowingly been left a secret. Lampang offers an authentic Thai experience, even to its more adventurous visitors. From the temples to the parks, the mountains to the rivers, the food to the culture, grab a backpack and a camera—Lampang is more than just a sleepy little town.

Formula E Races Into Its Fifth Season Formula E is a class of auto racing that uses electric-powered cars. The ABB FIA Formula E Championship is anticipated to be the most intense as the fifth edition of the racing series began at the

UNESCO World Heritage Site Ad Diriyah in Saudi Arabia on the 14th of December. It was the first race for the championship in the Middle East and the first for the series’ exciting new Gen 2 cars. Against the backdrop of international skylines such as New York, Hong Kong, Paris and Rome, drivers will race across five continents in a bid to be crowned champions. Formula E showcases some of the best international road car producers and automotive brands—names like Audi, DS, Jaguar, Mahindra and NIO leap

out of their roster as well as Nissan and BMW (linking up with Andretti). This year also boasts new innovations bringing the series forward in a new era of electric racing. As drivers make their way around a tight and undulating 2.5 km track, ATTACK MODE will see drivers go off-line in search of an extra 25 kW of power to go back and challenge rivals while FANBOOST allows 5 drivers to receive an extra 100 kJ of energy to take the maximum power available to 250 kW.

Alejandro Agag, Founder & CEO of Formula E, said: “Formula E broke the mold by being the first to go electric - so it’s clear we aren’t scared of trying new things. Whether that’s introducing new on-track innovations or tweaking the format of the race or creating new ways for fans to follow or interact with the sport. I’m eager to see the competitive debut of the Gen2 car and ATTACK MODE in action during a race scenario on the tight and challenging street circuits that’ve come to define our series. I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time and this is the year where the ABB FIA Formula E Championship comes of age.”

Abb Fia Formula E Championship - What’s New For Season Five Split power modes – What happens when there is no pit-stop? In a bid to promote a variety of strategic options, as well as further enhancing and retaining the intense and unpredictable nature of Formula E races, it will be mandatory for drivers to use two different power modes during the race. Drivers will be able to access 225kW of power in a higher mode - as opposed to the standard 200kW available during the race - once they’ve passed through a single activation zone. The activation zone will be clearly visible and

marked out on the circuit for fans trackside and those watching on TV. The two power modes on each car will be indicated using different colours on the innovative LED system on the halo head protection device. Drivers will also be able to activate FANBOOST - the unique interactive voting mechanism that allows the top-five voted drivers to receive extra energy.

Formula E races won’t be measured using a pre-defined number of laps, but instead will run to a strict time limit of 45-minutes - plus one lap to reach the chequered flag. This will enable easier monitoring and comparison between drivers when using the newlyintroduced higher power mode. This year, the roster of drivers is joined by 5 rookies: Alexander Sims (BMW i Andretti Motorsport), Max Gunther (GEOX DRAGON), Stoffel Vandoorne (HWA RACELAB), Gary Paffett (HWA RACELAB), Oliver Rowland (Nissan e.dams) and Felipe Massa (VENTURI Formula E Team). Earlier in the year, Felipe Massa raced Peregrine Falcon –capable of flying at speeds in excess of 350 km/h (217 mph). With a maximum speed of 280 km/h (174 mph), Massa says, ““The footage from the drive is very special and it was a privilege to take part. I’m looking forward to returning to Ad Diriyah and to start racing. It’ll be my first race in Formula E and I’m eager to get behind the wheel again.” Defending champion Jean-Eric Vergne returns on the track in hopes of becoming the first driver in the history of the series to win back-toback titles. The Frenchman continues with the Techeetah team.

Bumrungrad Health Briefs Why do the Tests of an Annual Health Check-up Change When We Age? Regular health check-ups are important because they are not only able to find health problems you may have but may also warn you about problems that may surface in the future.

Health Check-ups Before Age 30 Prior to age 30, in addition to the standard tests, doctors may discuss your sexual maturation. For women above 18-21 years of age, Pap smear tests and pelvic examinations are recommended annually. These tests are able to detect changes of the cells within the cervix before developing into cancer caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). During 21-30 years of age, a Pap smear test should be performed every 1- 3 years, and for over 30 years of age, a Pap smear test should be performed every 3-5 years (or Pap smear test with HPV (cotest) every 5 years).

thorough examination, and continue to have a mammogram every 1-2 years thereafter. For men who’ve reached 40, prostate cancer becomes an increasing concern. Often, men neglect having a prostate examination until symptoms arise such as frequency or difficulty with urination. These symptoms may be the sign of an enlarged prostate or prostate cancer. As women reach 55, osteoporosis is a serious condition that should be monitored yearly. Osteoporosis can lead to a variety of problems concerning bones such as joint pain or fractures. Another concern is, once every 1-2 years, or as recommended by your doctor, people over 50 should have fecal occult blood test (FOBT). Stool is tested for blood content, and if found, this is a clear warning sign for bowel cancer.

For men in the same age group, doctors suggest an examination of the testes to check for testicular cancer. Testicular cancer is most common in younger men, but treatment is often successful when detected early.

And Doctors also recommended that people of this age have a colonoscopy every 5 years. It’s known that colonoscopies have successfully curbed the prevalence of colon cancer among older adults over the years.

What to Expect with a Health Check-up After Age 30

Don’t Neglect Your Check-ups

As people reach the second half of their 30s, the long term effects of lifestyle choices such as diet, exercise, or other habits such as smoking take a visible toll on our health. For women who’ve reached 40, regular breast examinations are important to check for any irregular changes. Women are advised to annually have a doctor examine their breasts for lumps, redness, rashes, or dimpling on the skin or nipples. If present, these signs may indicate breast cancer. In addition to the physical exam, doctors recommend that women schedule a mammogram for a more

Other exhibitors this year included insurance, boat care, marine products and accessories, luxury properties and an expanded food zone with pop-ups from leading restaurants along the East Coast as well as imported wines, beers, ciders and cocktails.

“We aimed to expand the show this year and broaden some of the exhibitor products, and this has been well received by the visitors. In particular, the pop-ups and food trucks have been very popular and really added a festival atmosphere to the show with visitors staying much longer and coming back multiple times over the four days, added Finsten. The dates for the eighth Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show are 28 November to 1 December, 2019 at Ocean Marina Yacht Club. Another Outstanding Regatta At The 32nd Phuket King’s Cup Asia’s biggest and most prestigious sailing regatta was held at the Beyond Resort Kata, Phuket in early December for the 32nd time. The Phuket King's Cup Regatta is organized by the Phuket King's Cup Regatta Organizing Committee under the auspices of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy and the Province of Phuket. The event lasted eight days with the focus on keelboats, multihulls and sailors, both international and Thai nationals.

Kevin Whitcraft, President of the Organizing Committee, said: "We are delighted to welcome all international and Thai sailors to this year’s regatta which has been continuously organized for over three decades. A fleet of over 100 boats from keelboats, multihulls and dinghy classes contended in this year’s Regatta, sailed over a variety of courses off the Southern Thai resort island of Phuket. It’s great to see familiar names and faces returning year after year to compete in what has become Asia’s most coveted yachting trophy. We are now positioning the race so that it remains highly relevant to future generations and the ongoing development of the sport.” In the course of 32 years, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta has gained a reputation as both a highly competitive event on the water featuring some of the world’s best boats, skippers and crews, as well as a fun social occasion where visitors enjoy the traditional warm Thai hospitality in one of the best holiday destinations in the world. This year was no different. The keelboats and multihulls were divided into 11 classes: IRC Zero, IRC 1, IRC, Premier, Firefly, Multihull Racing, Multihull Cruising, Bareboat Charter Division A, Bareboat Charter Division B, Modern Classic and Cruising. With a strong breeze of up to 17

knots, Monday started with blue skies and fair winds; allowing two races in all classes to be held off the southern part of the island at Kata Beach. Closer to shore, younger sailors honed their skills as they trained in practice races before their Wednesday opening races. The youngsters gathered from all around Thailand, from Pattaya to Songhkla, and most of them are already representing Thailand at international events. “These young sailors will one day be aboard the big keelboats and multihulls and racing in the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta,” said Commander Peera Sagultem of the Royal Thai Navy, who was also the Dinghy Race Officer. The races are divided in Optimists Boys and Girls, Laser 4.7, Laser Radial, Laser Standard and 420 classes. On Wednesday, 13 year old Panwa Boonak finished first in the Boys Optimist Class. His win comes as no surprise—Boonak is a winner of the Asian Sailing Championships and a member of the Thai World Championship team. A recent winner of the 2018 Optimist Asian and Oceanian Championship at the Ngwe Saung Yacht Club and Resort in Myanmar, Boonak won all 10 races held in his class. After an exciting week of racing, Saturday proved to be an exciting day for the finals with good winds of about 15 knots.

In the IRC Zero Class, Australian Ray Roberts and his TP-52 design boat Team Hollywood placed first. Roberts and his team beat out defending champions Kevin and Tom Whitcraft on their Thai-registered boat THA72. This is Robert’ sixth win in 23 years in the top flight class at the King’s Cup. In the IRC 1 Class, Australian Craig Nicholls finished first overall on Aquarii, while Hong Kong’s Nick Burns and Fred Kinmonth on Mandrake III, followed by Scott Bradley’s Thai-registered East Marine Emagine finished second and third respectively. Chinese’s entry Highlead Encouragers (Judy) finished first overall after seven races in the IRC 2 Class. Local sailor Morton Jacobsen’s sports boat Over Here finished second while Great Britain’s John Grendon’s Di Hard finished third. The Premier Class honors went to Singapore’s Andy Cocks aboard Firstlight, with Hong Kongregistered boat Antipodes second. Third overall was Thailand’s Inthinai Yingsiri on Pine-Pacific. The fast locally-built Firefly 850 catamarans managed nine races during the regatta with Great Britain’s John Newnham on Twin Sharks taking the overall honors. Germany’s Hans Rahmann on Voodoo finished second and Brit Neil Ayre on Mamba finished a close third.

In the Racing Multihull Class, Dan Fidock took the helm on the Australian trimaran Fugazi after a close competition all week with the imposing 60-foot trimaran SHK Scallywag Fuku Bid from Hong Kong. Dave Fuller followed up third on his trusty boat Java. Another highlight of this year’s Phuket King’s Cup Regatta were the 107 young sailors participating in the International Dinghy Classes. Regardless of their young age, all of them proved their skills on the water, sailing across as the new stars of the prestigious sport. 13 year old Panwa Boonak finished with honors after winning all 12 races in the Optimist Class. M.L. Weka Bhanubandh took second place as a promising sailor and Patihan Vorrasart followed third. In the Laser Standard Class, Chussit Punjamala won 3 out of the 12 races and finished as the overall winner, nonetheless. He was followed by Arthit Romanyk and Chairat Dangdeemark in second and third places respectively. In the Laser Radial Class, Janisara Sasha Romanyk finished as the overall winner and she was followed by Sophia Gail Montgomery and Voravong Rachrattanaruk. The Laser 4.7 Class was won by Patcharee Sringham, with Pitchakon Ungpakornkaew second and Nuttapong Yoang-Ngam third. As a team event, Intira Parnpiboon and Paliga Poonpat took the top prize in the 420 Class, followed by Chanokchon Wangsuk and Piyaporn Khemkaew in second place, with Jedtavee Yongyuenarn and Chakkapat Wiriakitti in third place The eight-day event ended on Saturday evening in a special ceremony as H.E Air Chief Marshal Chalit Pukbhasuk, Personal Representative of His Majesty, the King of Thailand, presided over the Royal Award Ceremony. The 33rd King’s Cup regatta will be held from the 1st to the 7th of December next year in 2019.

78

HOT Magazine
