elcome to issue 1, volume 7 of HOT Magazine. Nestled cozily in northern Thailand, in the province of the same name, our Let’s Go feature this month takes us to Nan, a charming town hidden among rearing mountains. The roads, while less trodden, lead to an impressive view of authentic Thai culture. The lack of foreign crowds is noticeable here, unlike in Chiang Mai located four hours away. Nan only became part of Thailand a hundred years ago and the town is characterized by Tai Lue culture, from its ancient temples, the indigenous communities and the slow lifestyle. Put on some comfortable walking shoes and turn to page 44 as we tour this delightful Thai town. Poor interest rates and the recent lackluster performance in crypto currencies have moved investors to purchase investments they can actually touch. Property, wine and art have become popular investment assets of late and the 2018 Knight Frank Luxury Index shows surprising growth potential in watches. In 2017 a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, once owned by the late actor and race car driver Paul Newman, a gift from his actress wife Joanne Woodward, sold for an astonishing $17.8 million USD’s. The watch had been inscribed with a message from Woodward “Drive carefully with me.” “Quality vintage watches can be bought for a few thousand dollars,” said John Reardon, the international head of watches at Christie’s, and the market for watches that cost less than $10,000 is one of the areas of most aggressive growth at the moment.” Take a look at your wrist and then turn to page 58 to read why your next best investment might be a time piece.
Mike Tyson not once, but twice. He is an outspoken mental health activist and accomplished actor. One of Britain’s most well-loved sports personalities, Frank Bruno competed from 1892 to 1996. Although he is now retired, he remains active through varied appearance requests—ranging from dinner events, charity fund raisers and theatre shows. On Saturday January 12th, Frank Bruno was in Hua Hin for a Gala Dinner at the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort where he wowed the crowd with stories of glory as well as some of his life’s darker moments. Sponsored by Orchid Palm Homes in association with Thai Visa, the InterContinental’s ballroom was filled with fans who were thrilled to be able to share their own personal moments with the champ of watching his fights back in the day as well as taking cherished photos with the ex-heavyweight champion. Turn to page 62 for a ringside dinner seat with Frank Bruno. Born out of an idea by veteran Super Car competitor Craig Corliss, best known for running V8 supercars, the inaugural season for TA2 turned out to be spectacular and as exciting as everyone had expected. The TA2 racing program is filling a niche in Thai Motorsport slotting in between the evergreen A-, B- and C- segment production car categories and Super Car/FIA GT3 cars. TA2 allows drivers to make the step from any junior rank, or karting background to fine-tune their skills in an affordable race car with low running costs. Break out your Fire Resistant Race Gear and turn to page 70 to find out more. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month’s issue. As always, thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

A
hidden gem discovered! Have you ever wondered what hides behind the imposing and often very striking fasciae of the Resort and Condominium developments that front Hua Hin’s main northsouth (Phetkasem) Road? These complexes are also often blessed with beach frontage! I recently had the opportunity to go behind the modern and sophisticated façade of The Yana Villas in Khao Takiab. The attractive combination of large swathes of white marble, contrasting sections of black tiles, and softer timber hues make for an imposing frontage. Yet I was not prepared for the architectural delight that presented itself once inside. Three stories high, light coloured timber walls line a wide path leading from the entrance foyer to the ocean frontage of this boutique resort. These walls are like timber waves rolling gently towards the ocean. Strategically placed gardens hug sections of the path adding colour contrast to the soft timber tones.

At the end of the path, space opens up to reveal an absolutely beachfront infinity edged pool, views of ‘Monkey Mountain’ and the golden standing Buddha image at its base. Bliss Pool and Cocktail Bar await to tempt with cooling beverages along with the SubLime Restaurant, the reason for our visit. Alfresco beachfront dining is what Sublime is about. The menu has a strong Thai cuisine focus, though pasta, grills and seafood also shine. Looking for a lighter lunchtime meal, then perhaps a burger or pizza. Our food journey started with Seared Scallops with a warm Caponata salad of Mediterranean vegetables - eggplant (aubergine), shallots, tomato, and capers and accompanied by a Jerusalem artichoke puree. The sweetness of the freshly grilled Scallops, the slight bite of the Caponata and the delicate smoothness of the artichoke puree – a delightful combination. When presented, the Sweet Potato and Carrot Soup was nearly too beautiful to dip our spoons into. The orange of the carrot on one half of the bowl and the purple hues of the sweet potato on the other looking like the Chinese Ying Yang symbol. The two flavours complimented each other superbly. With inspiration from the famous Thai curry known as Kaeng Liang, this Spicy Pumpkin Soup is presented dramatically. Pieces of freshly cooked prawn stand proudly in the middle of the bowl, and then the soup is poured in by serving staff bringing the whole dish together. Dramatic, attractive and delivering on Thai flavours and spice without overpowering the prawn. The Butterfly Glass Noodle Seafood Salad was a visual triumph when it arrived at our table! Glass noodle, coloured a dark purple-blue by the flowers of the butterfly pea, and then tossed with prawns, squid, mussels and a spicy dressing. This dish packed a spicy yet well-balanced punch as well as being enticing to the eye. From the mains section of the menu, we chose the Crispy Skinned Sea Bass and the Slow Cooked Pork Chop. The meat removed from the frame of the fish and fried and placed back on the cooked fish frame (head to tail) and served with a tangy Thai sauce – exquisite! The pork cooked slowly overnight and then finished

on the hot grill, sliced and topped with a delicate brown butter, coriander and apple sauce – delectable! We chose two desserts to finish. A Chocolate Lava Cake made with 58 percent cacao dark chocolate. Cutting into the miniature cake on our plate the gooey warm chocolate oozed inviting our spoon to dig in. Delicate vanilla icecream and fresh fruit pieces rounded out the dish. The second was the chef’s take on a Tiramisu. A mascarpone cream filled glass surrounding liqueur soaked biscuits and layers of strawberry - all topped with slices of fresh strawberries and a Matcha Tea powder. SubLime provided us with a tasty food journey in an exceptionally picturesque
setting overlooking the infinity pool and beach below with Monkey Mountain just off to the right. The setting is so romantic, the hotel has overseen six marriage proposals in the six short months it’s been open. Daytime beachgoers can climb the stairs for a leisurely lunch without losing sight of the beach. Happy Hour could be another reason to visit as it happens daily between 3 and 8pm with a buy one get one free offering. Drop in on Saturday and live acoustic music provided by a talented duo add further to the atmosphere.

What is your full name and age? My full name is Einar Braathe and I am 62 years old. Einar is an old Norwegian Viking name deriving from the Old Norse language and means warrior or bold person.
What is your current Job Position? For the last 6 years I have been the owner and Managing Director of Scandinavian Kitchen Studio Co. Ltd , which sell Kitchen-, bathroom- and wardrobe furniture from the Danish kitchen manufacturer KVIK.
courses within 20 minutes’ drive from my home, my only regret is that I don’t have time to play as much as I would like.
What is your favorite restaurant and why? I must say, one of the reasons why I ended up in Thailand, is because of the Thai food. I love Thai food and the spicier the better. The «Tum Yum Talay» they serve in «Rua Rimtarn» in Khao Takiab, is just delicious. I also love Indian food. Eating Indian food in “Take 5 Restaurant”, also in Khao Takiab, is like being in India.
How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin?
I must also mention «Andreas». My absolutely favorite Italian.
My first trip to Hua Hin was back in 2005 or 2006. I came here to buy a summer house and ended up with a bungalow in Cha Am and a new job as a real-estate agent selling Hua Hin properties to Scandinavians.
What do you like to do in your free time and why?
What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? I had already been to many places in Thailand before I discovered Hua Hin. I was told that Hua Hin was the city to go if you had a family and were interested in playing golf. From my first visit I never left…
What do you like most about your profession? I have been doing marketing, sales and customer service for all of my professional life. I love to spend time talking to my customers and guide them in the process of buying their Dream Kitchen. The best sales presentations don’t feel like presentations. Working with people to achieve a common goal is an incredibly rewarding aspect of my work. When you succeed in doing this, you build long lasting relationships that very often build into true friendships.
What do you like least about your profession? This is a difficult one. I don’t really think I can point at any specific part of my work I dislike. Off course there are days which are more challenging than others, but all in all I love what I am doing.
With a Kvik kitchen shop to run, and a 7 year old active boy, there isn’t that much time left. But when time allows, I’ll bring my golf set and play golf with my wife or with some good friends.
What would you recommend to newcomers to do in Hua Hin and why? Hua Hin is great, but the most beautiful places you find outside of the city. I always recommend visitors to go down to Dolphin Bay and Sam Rai Yot to see the Prayanakorn Cave or go to the Kui Buri National Park to watch wild elephants. The «Monsoon Valley Vineyard» is also a great place to visit – both for the spectacular view and for its wine.
Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you? What can that be? That I used to be a dedicated hunter? From I was a kid, my father took me out every season to hunt for elk, deer, hare and wood grouse. This is may be what I miss most living in Thailand – the great Scandinavian forests and its nature.
What is the most outlandish thing you have ever done and why? That must be moving to Thailand. Starting a new life on the other side of the globe and starting a new job doing something I had never done before at the same time.
What do you like most about Hua Hin? I love Hua Hin. There are no other cities in Thailand where I would rather stay. Hua Hin has a delightful mix of city and sea with a laid-back ambience, lively markets, great restaurants and sea food, lots of activities for children, good schools and it is located only a few hours away from Bangkok. For me as a golfer, Hua Hin is paradise. With 6 great golf

giving it a platform of 549 hotels across Asia, Australia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America and the US. With the tender offer completed, MINT will immediately turn its focus to working closely with NH Hotel Group to complete integration-related tasks and to unlock value-accretive and mutually complementary benefits across both businesses, with the aim of maximizing shareholder value in both companies on a foundation of financial discipline and strong corporate governance. In addition, over the next few quarters and with the benefit of accounting consolidation of NH Hotel Group’s strong earnings, MINT will actively manage its funding structure,

This, combined with the opportunities to leverage the respective strengths of MINT and NH Hotel Group to our mutual benefit, make it an extremely exciting time for our companies, our shareholders and our valued guests. lying high on a private jet is the ultimate height of luxury. However, some jets are much more fabulous than others. Gulfstream, a division of General Dynamics, has always taken the crown in the jet industry, as the symbol of status among the world’s wealthiest. Leaving aside VIP versions of commercial airliners, the ultra-longrange Gulfstream G650 (together with its even longer-range version, the G650ER) has, since 2012, been the largest, fastest and most expensive of all purpose-built business jets.
But that top position is now being challenged on several different fronts.
After obtaining its Canadian and US certification in late 2018, Gulfstream's Canadian rival, Montreal-based Bombardier Aerospace, is preparing the launch of its Global 7500 jet (as well as its sister craft, the Global 8000), an aircraft designed to challenge G650's dominance head on. Both jets have the latest technology including heads up displays, synthetic vision, fly-by-wire and glass cockpits. Although powered by different makes of engines—GE for the Bombardier Global 7500/8000 and Rolls-Royce for the Gulfstream G650—to the untrained eye, the aircraft certainly share similar capabilities. However, the G650 boasts
a very slick look with a spacious cabin experience in comparison to the Global 7500’s elegant but smaller interior. Although in terms of cabin design, the Bombardier definitely upped the game including a stand-up shower in its en suite -- which isn't available in the G650ER -- and a large conference suite with a six-seater table, which can also be used for a formal dining space. Bombardier has also added extra windows (now 28 in all) to compete with Gulfstream's famously lightfilled cabin.

Global 7500
With a price tag of around $70 million, both aircraft are capable of carrying up to 19 passengers. The difference lies in the crafts’ range. The Bombardier is capable of flying up to 7,700 nautical miles, in comparison to the 7000 nautical mile range of the Gulfstream. That’s enough to fly from Sydney to Los Angeles nonstop. However, range is less important for busy corporate executives & celebrities, what is important is the design of the aircraft which they can show off. In that sense, both aircrafts are certainly neck to neck. While the long cabin of the Global 7500 offers perks of privacy, the G650 windows offer the best views possible—a long-used selling point of the Gulfstream. The G650 is also capable of maintaining cabin altitude at 3,300 feet while actually flying at 41,000 feet. Lower cabin altitude means the heart and lungs don’t work as hard to oxygenate the blood, which reduces fatigue and ensures that upon arrival, passengers are more refreshed and alert. Bombardier does have an ace up its sleeve though—The Nuage, a state of the art ergonomic seat born from seven years of research and engineering. Unavailable on any other craft, the Nuage is designed with the intent to bring the comfort of luxury home seating while in the air.

Aeron Supersonic The Bombardier does sound promising but the Gulfstream is a formidable brand and it has a long standing (or, flying) relationship with loyal customers. However, in the face of executive travel, it is all about time. Enter Aerion Supersonic and their partnership with Lockheed Martin and GE Aviation to develop the world’s first supersonic business jet. Faster than any jet at the speed of Mach 1.4 (about 1000 mph) it beats out even the Global 7500/8000 or the G650 who are capable of reaching speeds of around Mach 0.9.
Global 7500

Aerion brands itself as “the company that is creating a faster future” and indeed the branding is certainly true. In December 2017, Aerion and Lockheed Martin announced that they were joining forces to develop the AS2— aimed to be 60% faster than today’s business aircraft and airliners. Aerion’s engineering team is working in close collaboration with Lockheed Martin’s Advanced Development Program organization, better known as its famed Skunk Works advanced design team. In October 2018, Aerion and GE Aviation announced the completion of the initial design for the first supersonic engine purpose-built for business jets—GE’s Affinity ™. The first flight has been scheduled for 2023 and promises to save as much as three hours across the Atlantic and more than five hours across the Pacific. Aerion is also collaborating with Honeywell Aerospace to bring a revolutionary new cockpit to the AS2 The designs for the AS2 cabin feature a spacious cabin big enough for 11 passengers. Cabin dimensions are similar to some of today’s most popular long-range cabins with two seating areas, a large galley, a full-width aft lavatory, and walk in baggage area. In the words of Aerion’s mission statement, “With an AS2 fueled and at the ready, you will travel in new and more productive ways—to more places in less time—creating whole days to spend on promising business opportunities and precious extra hours for family. Pursue adventure; however you define it, at supersonic speed.” Indeed, global mobility has been revolutionized and whether, it’s the Bombardier Global 7500, the Gulfstream G650 or even the yet-to-belaunched AS2, there is a renaissance in supersonic travel, setting the pace for an epic duel in the skies.

Nan Province

N
estled cozily in northern Thailand in the province of the same name, Nan is a charming town hidden among rearing mountains. The roads, while less trodden, lead to an impressive view of authentic Thai culture. The lack of foreign crowds is noticeable here, unlike in Chiang Mai four hours away. Nan only became part of Thailand a hundred years ago and the town is characterized by Tai Lue culture, from its ancient temples, the indigenous communities and the slow lifestyle. Traveling in Nan itself offers you the choice of cycle rickshaws or motorbike taxis since there are no tuk tuks. Songthaews run regularly through the surrounding villages and marked tourist areas and you can even hire a taxi for a day, provided you ask beforehand. Most guesthouses in Nan offer bicycles and motorbikes for rent. You won’t have much trouble finding a suitable means of transport but you might have trouble deciding where to go first!
Bo Klua A district right on the border of Laos, Bo Klua is some 90 km from Nan and famous for its salt ponds
(hence the name –klua means salt). Salt has been extracted from the ponds here for centuries. The village is small but stunningly beautiful, nestled against the backdrop of high mountains and the lush jungle. The roads to Bo Klua itself offer a stunning route to explore, especially for motorbike lovers, with hardly any traffic to weave through. There isn’t much to do here but it is one of those places where doing nothing is a delightful pastime. Locals seem very happy to see a few foreigners up here so you can sit and pass the time of day in one of the town’s two very good coffee shops; wander around the tiny village, take a stroll down the valley along the banks of the Mang or sit in a riverside cafe sipping a cold one
Doi Phu Kha National Park The province is home to a whopping seven national parks which are full of waterfalls, trails for hiking and stunning viewpoints. Of them all, Doi Phu Kha National Park is the most famous and the largest. The park is named after the Chompoo Phu Kha, a tree famous for its attractive pink flowers that is now almost extinct in other parts of the world. The ascent up to the Doi Phu Wae peak takes 3 days and 2
nights, but it’s well worth the hike for all its magnificent scenery. The main entrance to the park lays half way between Pua and Bo Kluea, i.e an hour and a half away from the city. While there is a disappointing lack of wildlife, the trails are open to motorbikes and tourists can stay overnight, after an admissions fee, of course. The park gets unusually chilly during December-February, so there are also park chalets offered for those who cannot brave the cold. Deep in the mountains
Hong Chao Fong Kham The house of Chao Fong Kham is at least a century old and a fine example of Lanna architecture. The teakwood house was built without using screw or nails. Inside is a display of furniture and items used by the noble family, as well as art and craft demonstrations. Chao Fong Kham was a descendant of Chao Anantaworaritthidej, the 62nd Lord of Nan. It is now a museum and remains open five days a week from Wednesdays to Sundays from 9am to 5pm. There are regular exhibitions of traditional cloth weaving and you can even buy them, after viewing how they are made.

Nan National Museum What was once the palace of Lord Phrachao Suriyaphong Pharidet, the last ruler of Nan, it is now a museum with interactive exhibits related to the history of the province and its people. The first floor is dedicated to the various ethnic groups like the Thai Lue and several hill tribes while the second floor showcases exhibits items collected throughout history such as ancient weapons, pottery and ceramics. The museum is only open five days a week from Wednesdays to Sundays with an entry fee of 100 baht. However, it’s not just the museum that is attractive but the exterior. The Frangipani tunnel is an enchanting pathway, with twisty branches extending from the trees of the same name. Also, on the compound of the museum is Wat Noi, Thailand’s smallest temple. It is only 3.5 meters tall!
Wat Phumin Considered the most attractive temple in the city because of its colorful murals and unique architecture, the

temple dates back to 1596 and was rebuilt again in 1867. Some of the murals are still in excellent conditions, showcasing daily life in the 19th century as well as depictions of the Buddha’s previous incarnations. Among them all is the Whisper of Love (Poo Marn Yar Marn) where a tattooed man is whispering in a woman’s ear. Local legend has it that if lovers pray in front of this mural, their love will be eternal. The temple is located in the center of the town, near the Nan National Museum, and can be easily reached on foot from most hotels in downtown Nan. The temple grounds are open daily from 6am until 6pm and require a paid entry fee of 50 baht per person.
Khuang Muang The town plaza is right outside the grounds of Wat Phumin. Used for ceremonial purposes in the past, now it is a hangout place for locals and travelers alike. On the weekends, the walking street comes alive with Northern-style street food and souvenirs. Local artists showcase
their works here—from postcards, paintings, t-shirts mostly based on the mural of Whisper of Love.
Wat Phra That Khao Noi Also known as the Blessing Buddha, the stunning 29.5 foot Golden Buddha is the highlight at Wat Phra That Khao Noi. 303 steps lead you to a beautiful view over Nan, although there is also a road leading up. The best time to go is at sunrise or sunset. Built in 1487, the temple is just outside the main city center of Nan. The statue itself was erected in 1999 on the late King’s Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 72nd birthday. An annual temple fair is held (usually in May) with sky-rockets lit in the Buddha’s honor. Admission is free here and while it is recommended to have your own car, another easy way to get to Wat Phra That Khao Noi is either by taxi or songthaew. The temple is open daily from 8am to 5pm.
There is more to Nan than just a sleepy little town. It is home to ancient temples dating way before Nan was even part of Thailand. For those uninterested in temples and mountains, stop at Nan Art Café for a selection of Europeanstyle pastries, cakes and drinks. Or spend a few hours at Nan Riverside Art Gallery, a tranquil hub founded by Winai Prabripoo, one of Thailand’s best modern artists. Nan hosts longboat races on the river every October, the tradition dating back centuries, to honor the end of the rainy season. Either on foot or wheels, you will find traces of history, as far as the 13th century, embedded in the old town in the streets, architecture or food. Take your pick among the 400 temples in Nan, the eye-catching Wat Sri Panton with its all gold sculptures and the double sevenheaded Nagas on the staircase, or Wat Ming Muang with its stunning white carved stucco exterior, considered to be the inspiration for Wat Rong Khun (the White Temple) in Chiang Mai. You can even participate in an exorcising ceremony at Wat Phra Kerd. And last but not least, don’t forget to pay your respects at Wat That Chae Haeng, an ancient Buddhist temple built almost six centuries ago. Nan is yet to be fully discovered by the hordes of tourists visiting Thailand every year and you can get there several ways. Nan’s tiny airport connects with Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok no less than four times a day. By air, Bangkok is an hour and a half away from Nan and it is highly recommended to check on prices and dates before catching a flight out through Nok Air or Thai Air Asia. If you prefer your feet on the ground, be prepared for a long trip—at least 10 hours. You can get buses from Mo Chit bus station, with two buses leaving every morning and evening. For travel within Nan province, there are minibus services available every hour. Although, considering the winding roads, you might feel safer on Green buses which travel through Phayao or Phrae and Lampang. Of course, considering the vague schedules, time and rates are liable to sudden change so check in advance before you leave your hotel although most hotels and guesthouse staff provide advance tickets for a small fee as well. If you’re traveling directly to Nan city, the train is not advisable as the nearest train station is in Den Chai; which is 2.5 hours from the city although buses run every couple of hours from Den Chai to Nan.

Watches as Investments
P
oor interest rates and the recent lackluster performance in crypto currencies have moved investors to purchase investments they can actually touch. Property, wine and art have become popular investment assets of late and the 2018 Knight Frank Luxury Index shows surprising growth potential in watches. For decades watches have been symbols of luxury, wealth and personal taste. When it comes to watches as investments, the market is dominated by two brands: Rolex and Patek Philippe. Rolex watches span the gamut from affordable to exclusive, starting at less than $6,000 and soaring to limited-edition models that cost more than $300,000. In 2017 a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, once owned by the late actor and race car driver Paul Newman, a gift from his wife Joanne Woodward, sold for an astonishing $17.8 million USD’s. The watch had been inscribed with a message from Woodward “Drive carefully with me” and experts are still considering if the watch would have sold for less had it not been worn by Newman himself. Watches, along with items like stamps, antiques, and vintage cars, are a growing new form of alternative investment with some affluent Singaporeans often investing some 5-8% of their wealth in these alternatives. It’s worth noting that unlike most other asset classes, an alternative investment like watches has a low correlation to other assets like stocks and bonds and to the financial markets in general. A stock market boom or crash might alter the value of gold but these fluctuations do not directly impact the value of your watches, in fact, they might even hold steady. “Quality vintage watches can be bought for a few thousand dollars,”
58
HOT Magazine
said John Reardon, the international head of the watches at Christie’s. And the market for watches that cost less than $10,000 “is one of the areas of most aggressive growth at the moment.” According to the Knight Frank Luxury Index 2018, watches make great investments because as an asset, they are surprisingly resilient and nonvolatile. More importantly, tracking the Knight Frank Luxury Index of performance by asset class, though watch investments only showed 5% growth across 12 months, longer 5 and 10 year periods showed promising returns. Investment grade watches managed to grow a whopping 23% across a 5 year term and 69% over a decade. While it is true that it is not the most appreciable assets, it is the least volatile which makes it a safe middle ground with little downside. Like most commodities and assets, an “investment grade watch” is often (but not always) a high value, limited supply timepiece. That is not to mean that the model is limited edition (though it is not uncommon) but simply that there’s limited supply or at least, an indefinite waitlist for that particular model. That said, most investment grade watches retail prices are out of reach for most middle class investors, starting with sums over 5 digits. Then of course, there is the emotional draw of watchmaking which makes it an asset unlike most other than art, wine and whiskey. There’s a level of artisanship associated with fine watchmaking – from the ingenious mechanisms used to calculate and track our temporal place and position in the universe, to the artistry involved in decorating, finishing and generally dressing up a timepiece from both inside and outside, the world of high horology serves as a multi-dimensional canvas that combines art and science in one genre.

Collectors admire not only the innovation and mechanical craftsmanship of an object but they also appreciate the design and the beauty of it. It is a fine conversation starter with an opportunity to meet likeminded people. There are certain pieces in very limited numbers that provide the collector with a bespoke experience. The collector can get to know the creator of the object and be personally involved in the details of the design. Those items often provide the collector with a wonderful feeling of connection with both the creator and the item itself. With vintage watches, there is almost a fetish for a given watch to be made up of exactly the same parts it was when it left the manufacture, even if those parts are damaged or even corroded. It is for this reason that vintage Rolex watches are among the few watches not sent back to HQ because the Geneva brand takes great pride in ensuring that your Rolex timepiece returns to you with specifications in line with their latest improvements and innovations. From an investor perspective, these modifications make the vintage model more robust but the drawback is that it is no longer a complete watch authentic to its period of production. In these instances, an appraiser or a knowledgeable collector is a valuable resource.

Due diligence is key. Even then, knowing all this, the resale of a watch is not as simple as going to eBay. A pawn shop is out of the question due to commission issues, and an auction house simply takes too big a cut of the proceeds, meaning that you have to not just sell above what you paid but also account for the “seller’s cut”. Ultimately, investing in watches goes beyond the process of buying and selling watches, understanding which brands make collectible models might be a good starting point but to turn a decent profit requires that you also have a large network of brand or retail contacts and a database of other collectors who might buy your pieces from your collection. Websites like WatchBox and Hodinkee go beyond just selling watches and aim to create greater transparency for people who buy watches for thousands, not millions, of dollars. They want to increase visibility in a market that has often been opaque. According to Danny Govberg, the chief executive of WatchBox. “Watches have an underlying value, just like a diamond. You can take a diamond anywhere in the world and sell it. We’re creating a worldwide market for watches.” Knight Frank’s recent survey found the number one reason why people buy scarce luxury goods is simply the joy of ownership. The second is capital appreciation, the third the provision of a safe haven for capital investment, followed by investment portfolio diversification and, lastly, status among peers.

TA2 Racing Returns For Its 2nd Season
T
he inaugural season for TA2 turned out to be spectacular and as exciting as everyone had expected. Born out of an idea by veteran Super Car competitor Craig Corliss, best known for running ‘V8 Supercars’, firstly a Ford Falcon and latterly a Holden Commodore. Joining the TSS racing programme for the 2018 season filling a niche in Thai Motorsport slotting in between the evergreen A-, B- and C-segment production car categories and Super Car/FIA GT3 cars. TA2 allowed

drivers to make the step from any junior rank, or karting background to fine-tune their skills in an affordable car with low running costs.
system. Additionally, they come with a 9-inch Detroit locking diff, Auto Blip and Traction Control which further improves driveability.
The ever-popular TA2 concept is currently enjoying 40 plus car grids in the US and is booming in Australia and Scandinavia. The car has been optimised for Asia, having a Bespoke paddle shift 6 speed sequential transmission as well as featuring a fully integrated MoTeC M150 engine management and data acquisition
Seven Trans-Am cars, Dodge Challenger, Mustang, Camaro, started on the grid for the season opener at the Sepang Circuit Malaysia in March. The TA2 cars were always going to be a welcome and exciting addition to the Super Series. Philip Massoud was the winner of the first race.
After the successful debut of the TA2 cars in the Super Series first rounds in Sepang Malaysia, Craig Corliss and Philip Massoud first and second places gave them an early advantage in the championship. Chang International Circuit Buriram was the venue for rounds 3 & 4. The driver and teams lining up were, Don Pastor, TEC Asian Championship, Poramin Meesamanyont, B-Quik Racing Team, Craig Corless TA2 Racing, Grant Supaphong, TA2 Racing Team, Narin Naeosathon, B
Quik Racing Team, Gregory Bennett, Amerasian Fragrance Racing, Philip Massoud, TAS Asia, Michael Freeman, Innovation Motorsport. Philip managed to get the upper hand in both races and left the circuit at the end of the weekend leading the championship. The 12th Baan Saeng Grand Prix, an international motorsport racing event was the venue to host over 200 hundred car drivers from 24
countries. This was an excellent venue to showcase the TA2 class. Baan Saeng was a typical challenging street circuit with tight corners and an uneven surface making this a very challenging time for all drivers. The position of the garage on the beachfront gave the crowds an excellent opportunity for them to see at first hand all the teams hard at work on the cars.

TA2 welcomed Lenso with newcomer driver Cem Yudulmuz in car 35 the mustang. The street circuit lived up to its reputation with many incidents, forcing the safety car to be deployed on a couple of occasions throughout the weekend of racing. There was no quarter given over a hard-fought 2 days of racing. There was no let up from the championship leader with Philip winning Saturday's race and Craig Sunday. The championship was turning out to be everything the organisers wanted, fast, furious muscle car door to door racing. It was the turn of Bira international Racing circuit in Pattaya to host rounds 7 and 8. A home track for a number of the drivers. On a tight circuit over a hot weekend in September the cars were pushed to their limits. It was a testimony to

all the mechanics and drivers that put on such a fanatic exhibition for the crowd. It was a weekend of ups and downs where first place went to Michael Freemans and Craig Corliss. The drivers left us just as we always wanted, looking forward to the final races of the season. It was any of the top 3 drivers, Philip, Craig or Michael for the championship. All the team’s mechanics, drivers and staff had worked very hard to make the first season of TA2 as memorable as possible. It lived up to all the hype and expectations, these muscle cars had put on a great show. So, it was off to Buriram for the final races of the season. There was just one point separating the top two drivers Craig Corliss and Philip Massoud. With an eye on next season already there was a welcome
addition to the line-up with Prince of Malaysia joining the starting grid as well as a few more surprises lined up for next season. The tension for the drivers was palpable. It had been a long hardfought season, but there was one more push for that coveted number one position. Chang international circuit had been a favourite venue earlier in the season that Philip Massoud had excelled at. He didn’t disappoint, even though the racing was fast and furious with all the drivers pushing hard as possible it was Philip's weekend taking the Championship with 2 first places. All the teams can be very pleased that the first season for TA2 had been a resounding success.
So, what about next season? After a long deliberation with TSS and TA2, the format has been changed to encourage more drivers to get their foot on the first rung of the ladder of exhilarating driver experience. The grid is set to grow for next season with inclusions of drivers from Australia, Europe & South America. We are looking forward to the season’s opener in Malaysia April 2019.

单里;
构成威胁;
定的居住地;
泰国的传染病,如麻风病、 结核病、象皮病、吸毒、三 期梅毒等;
照;
一寸或两寸、6个月内的正 面免冠照片;
期不少于1年的银行存款证 明;或月工资不少于13000 元的收入证明;

证明;
问:外国人在泰国如何获得医 疗保健服务?(How do foreigners have healthcare in Thailand?)

Bumrungrad Health Briefs Older Adults with Diabetes Face Unique Health Challenges Diabetes is a serious disease at any age. In recent years, type 2 diabetes has reached epidemic levels among younger people in nearly every region of the world, with Asia being especially hard hit. Despite the trend in younger groups, the largest portion of the 400 million diabetes continues to have its greatest impact among adults aged 65 and older, with countries like the U.S. reporting diabetes rates of 25 percent for the 65-and-older population. The graying of the world’s population is driving type 2 diabetes rates higher among the elderly, who face a unique set of challenges in managing this chronic medical condition. Here are four serious challenges for elderly patients with diabetes.
1. Drug interactions pose risks The older we get, the more likely we are to be diagnosed with one or more chronic diseases. Dealing with multiple diseases usually involves taking multiple drugs prescribed by different doctors. Each medication can affect the way other drugs work and how long they stay in the body; interactions can increase the blood level of some drugs, causing toxicity, or lower the level of other drugs, rendering them ineffective. In addition to interactions between drugs, foods and nutrients can also produce adverse drug interactions , as can certain medical conditions — diseases of the liver and kidneys can slow the body’s rate of drug metabolism . Aging itself is also correlated with slower drug metabolization.
2. Exercise is still important Effectively managing diabetes requires a vigilant approach to diet and nutrition, physical activity, monitoring blood sugar levels , and taking medication as prescribed. The benefits of exercise can be as powerful for older diabetic patients as they are for younger patients. Alternating between aerobic exercise and resistance/ strength training at moderate intensity is
generally safe for older adults and makes it easier to control blood sugar levels and body weight.
3. Be vigilant about depression At first glance, diabetes and depression don’t appear to have much in common, but the truth is, the two diseases tend to go “hand in hand” and in combination, they represent a major health threat. Regardless of age, having type 2 diabetes can increase the risk of depression by up to two to three times, compared to people without diabetes. When both diabetes and depression are present together, a patient’s quality of life can suffer greatly. Controlling diabetes requires motivation, energy, attention to detail, and exercise and physical activity — and depression can overpower these healthy habits, reducing motivation, replacing energy with fatigue, altering eating habits, and impairing concentration and memory function.
4. Protect your vision Aging has an impact on most people’s eyesight, but diabetes can lead to the more serious vision threat known as diabetic retinopathy (DR) — the most common cause of blindness in diabetics and a leading microvascular complication among elderly patients. Diabetic retinopathy damages the retina , the layer of nerves which lines the back of the eye-ball. DR is a by-product of the cumulative long-term inflammation damage caused by years of living with elevated blood sugar levels. A patient’s DR risk increases the longer he or she has diabetes. The disease is most prevalent among patients with at least 20 years of diabetes history. Written by Dr. Rosanee Valyasevi, Diabetes Center, Bumrungrad International Hospital
Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok is home to over 1,300 doctors and surgeons providing quality in-patient and out-patient care in state-of-the-art diagnostic, therapeutic and intensive care facilities.
