elcome to Issue 1 Volume 8 of HOT Magazine. Thailand is the hub of boating in Asia. Its maritime national parks offer a huge variety of fascinating destinations for day and overnight cruising. For those looking to buy or charter a yacht there was no better place to be at the start of this year than in Phuket for the Thailand Yacht Show 2020. Thailand’s premier experiential yachting event returned for its fifth year to celebrate Asia’s primary destination in the global yachting arena. From the 9th to the 12th of January, yachting aficionados and wealthy lifestyle enthusiasts from all over the region gathered at the Royal Phuket Marina to experience all aspects of the yachting lifestyle. Dig out your yachting cap, put on your blue blazer and join us on page 38 as we bring you the latest in yachts, maritime equipment and lifestyle products. In 1844 the P&O company introduced “leisure excursions” that allowed passengers to travel to the Iberian Peninsula and the Mediterranean from Southhampton. As the forerunner of modern cruises with these voyages, the P&O Company is recognized as the world’s oldest cruise line. Cruising is tremendously popular and every year the ships get larger and larger. Current cruise ships are 4 times the size of their counterparts in the 80’s with the biggest cruise ship, Symphony of the Seas clocking in at 362 meters and costing 1.35 Billion USD’s. A segment of society however does not want to cruise on these behemoth’s, prefering a more genteel experience. In this issue we introduce you to Aqua Expeditions, a boutique luxury river and yacht cruise line with ships offering a unique brand of expedition cruising in the world’s most ecologically and culturally significant locales: the Peruvian Amazon, the

Mekong river in Cambodia and Vietnam, as well as the seas of East Indonesia. Fish out your Cabana wear and turn to page 58 to experience new modern-day adventures best discovered with a water view. When you think of motorsports there are certain races that come first to mind, that have defined the sport. The 24 hours of Le Mans, The Indianapolis 500 and the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix are prime examples. Another that is equally iconic but much more dangerous is the Dakar Rally. Starting in 1978 it was originally called the Paris-Dakar Rally due to its start and end points. Since 1995 the routes changed several times, so the race became know just as the Dakar. The Dakar is considered to be the most dangerous race in the world due to the numerous deaths of competitors and spectators alike. In the 41 editions of the race, 71 people have been killed in various accidents including its founder Thierry Sabine. Drive up to the safety of your easy chair and turn to page 74 to see why this race is better viewed on the tube. As we begin our 8th year of publishing and a new decade, 2020, I’m reminded of what Mark Twain had to say. “20 years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do, so throw off the bowlines, sail away from safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, dream, discover.” And with that, I will for the 85th time say, thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

eter Ton, a Dutch native, has been living in Hua Hin for 15 years after selling his software company in Holland. Starting out initially as an investor in a new property development, Peter soon took the reigns and started his own luxury property project near the Black Mountain Golf Course called Baan Ing Phu. While there were plenty of developers servicing the lower end of the property market, Peter took the opposite approach and built big modern luxury homes with high end price tags. Starting with11 rai of land, Peter continued to buy land and expand his development to where today he has built over 50 homes on 91 rai. His multi-award-winning Baan Ing Phu comes with perks such as drinkable water to every tap & boasts amenities like a restaurant, gym, spa and tennis court. Peter is now launching a brand-new luxury development and we recently had the pleasure of sitting down with him to discuss his newest venture.

HM: Peter, before we start talking about property, can you tell us a little about what you did business wise prior to moving to Thailand and what brought you to the Kingdom? PT: I established and managed software companies specialized in CRM applications in the Netherlands, Belgium and the UK, serving multinationals all over the world. I started this business in 1987 and became one of the very first players in the field of CRM. In the year 2000 I decided to sell the company to an American organization based in Boston. Long story short, I bought the company back in 2002 and decided to keep the company for 2 years to develop the next generation of CRM software. As soon as this mission was completed I sold the company again in September 2014. About a month later I moved to Thailand. So, here I am.
HM: You’ve been in Hua Hin 15 years now, why did you choose Hua Hin to settle down and did you do so with the intention of being a property developer? PT: Before I settled down in Hua Hin I visited to quite a few different places in Thailand, let’s say the most common places for tourists. For me there are quite some advantages being in Hua Hin. The proximity to Bangkok, the nice of mix of Thai locals, Thai visitors and foreigners living and making holiday here feels very comfortable. The nature in and around Hua Hin is beautiful with so many long stretched beaches, national parks like Keang Krachan, Sam Roi Yot and Pala-u. Nowadays Hua Hin offers everything you would expect in the “modern Western world” like top medical healthcare, luxury shopping, 5 Star Hotels., countless restaurants etc. And most important, still in a very pleasant atmosphere with Thai’s and foreigners living together.

To be honest, I did not come down with the intention to be a property developer, I even had never thought about this. I got involved in a project and planned to just project-manage the construction of 5 houses for a period of let’s say 2 years maximum, that’s it. So we can now say that this escalated completely, and my hobby project was changed into a serious challenge to build a high-end Villa development. This was a very interesting period since I had no experience whatsoever in this field. Suddenly I had to design a master plan, come up with a solid infrastructure that can be used for around 50 properties, decide which facilities to offer etc etc. In the meantime there is marketing, sales, financial management, project management, property services etc etc. Diving in the deep is probably not always the most comfortable or best way to realize things, but in my case it worked out pretty well. HM: While most developers were building Asian designed homes, you were constructing modern contemporary residences with state-of-the-art technology. Why did you decide to buck the trend and go a different direction?
26
HOT Magazine
PT: For sure this had to do with my technical background and having worked in electronics and the ICT industry. I was also curious to see what the implications were to implement such technology in several Villas. To be honest, looking back we made it too complex, systems with too many options that drove some of my clients mad ;-). But again, I learned a lot from this experience. HM: When you first began building Baan Ing Phu, other than the Black Mountain Golf Course, was there much development in the area and what were people saying about its location? PT: When I started with Baan Ing Phu there was absolutely nothing. No electricity, no water, no internet, no decent road and no projects around us. It felt like “in the middle of nowhere” and it probably was. Just pineapple fields and that was about it. After a short while we noticed serious works in the area adjacent to Baan Ing Phu, and rumors started that a golf-course was being developed as my neighbour.
Some of my friends tell me that this was pure luck. I prefer to stick to the fact that it is all about vision….. And of course, we could not have asked for better neighbors than Black Mountain for sure. But certainly in the beginning some visitors commented on the fact that however they liked the area of Baan Ing Phu, they found it too remote. But I seldom hear this comment anymore. Indeed, it takes a 20 minus drive to go to Hua Hin, but the roads are now in perfect condition, so it is an easy drive going out or driving home. It is all a matter of mind-set, and residents find it well worth driving 20 minutes to come home to a serene environment where it is quiet, and clean and without light-pollution. HM: Following the immense success of Baan Ing Phu, you are now going further afield again and starting a new stunning project called Baan Rom Yen at the Springfield Golf
Course. What can you tell us about your latest development and why Springfield? PT: Until let’s say early 2019 I always told people around me that I would not start another development anymore. But mid 2019 I had a meeting with the owners and management of Springfield and we decided to explore whether we could work together developing the residential area of Springfield. I felt there was a good connection between myself, my team and the owners of Springfield so we decided to go ahead. The new project I started is called Baan Rom Yen, which translates to “House in a Peaceful Environment”. And I can assure you that Springfield is a very peaceful area indeed. We will start with a small project of 9 Villas. In this project we will do our best to raise the bar in regards to design, build quality, materials used and property management. We started breaking ground for the first Villa in December 2019, this

will be my own Villa used as a showproperty. Handover for this Villa is before Xmas 2020. I can assure you that this will be a special property, worth visiting. We will start construction of the second villa in March, so we have a great start of the new project, since this article is the first news-item for Baan Rom Yen. All properties are situated on large land-plots of minimum 3,700 sqm, adjacent to the Golf course. In order to ensure privacy for residents and players, Springfield planned a 25 meter deep green buffer zone between the land-plots and the course, which is a significant advantage. In fact it creates the feeling of having even a larger garden‌.. HM: We’ve watched with interest as you continued to update the technology used in your Baan Ing Phu homes. will they all have the same design, or will each residence be a custom property? PT: For my own Villa I plan to use Google assistant or Amazon Alexa. This brings domotica to a higher level: easier to use and for significant lower costs. It is relatively easy to integrate lighting from Philips, fridges from many different suppliers, speakers from Sonos or Bose, locks, aircon systems etc etc. Giving instructions by simply talking is no longer science fiction, but applications that work very well. And everybody can use it without any problems. Almost every day new apps and suppliers connect to the major players and rest assured this will only continue to improve in the (near) future. Yes, all Villas are custom build and I would love it to end-up with 9 different Villas for this first project of Baan Rom Yen. We do most design work in-house
together with the clients. Besides that, we have worked with a free-lance interior designer for the first 2 Villas. She is happy and committed to continue working for the remaining Villas of Baan Rom Yen, so we have a great team. For construction and project management we work with the same teams as we used at Baan Ing Phu. So everybody knows each other and understands the expectation and quality requirements. Only this makes it possible to bring the project to a next quality level. HM: With your new project you’re again choosing to build in the Hua Hin area. Why did you decide to stay here and not go further afield to other areas like Khao Yai or the Eastern Seabord & what do you see as the future of Hua Hin? PT: Personally, I am excited about the Hua Hin area, so in most cases I can “transfer” this excitement to potential buyers. I love the Springfield area and would not know where else I can find a place like this to start a development. Last, but not least, my team and most of my suppliers are local. I have a long-term relationship with all my suppliers and intend to keep working with them for Baan Rom Yen. We know- and understand each-other very well, which makes working with each other so much easier with less stress. This is very important for me. I love to create fantastic properties, but I also like to enjoy life. So I am critical choosing the right partners with added value, good business norms and values, who also appreciate a long term relationship with us.
HM: We’ve followed your career in Hua Hin and know that you believe in giving back to the community by sponsoring several charity golf tournaments each year. When are they, are they open to the public and what organizations benefit from the money you raise? PT: Yes, that is correct. I make donations to local schools every year in such way that we know for sure the money is used for what is meant for, like study material or construction of new classrooms. Also in several situations we have instructed our contractors to build some facilities at schools at our costs. In addition, Baan Rom Yen will be the main sponsor of the La Grappa & Dansea Charity Golf Tournament in February 2020, just as Baan Ing Phu was the main sponsor for this event in 2019. The net proceeds of this event will be donated to Charity Hua Hin Thailand. I personally know the management of this charity very well and can assure that all money that comes into the Charity is used for the people in need! HM: For those interested in finding out more about Baan Rom Yen, how can they reach you and does your new development have a website yet? PT: Information about Baan Rom Yen can be found on the website: www.BaanRomYen.com Of course, interested parties are welcome to contact me via phone at +66 (0)89 039 0966, or by email, peter.stonehead@ gmail.com.

ife experiences shape and mould us, and our ability to harness and channel these builds our strength of character. So, it was for Khun Jasvir San-Ghera. As the oldest girl in her family, it fell on her to help her mother and grandmother shop for food supplies at the local markets and help in the kitchen preparing the daily meals. “I would have preferred to be outside playing” she confides but that was life in this Thai family household.

Jasvir aspired to be an artist and after school, secured a role in the ice carving kitchen of a prestigious international hotel in Bangkok. Her Head Chef taught her the skills of drawing and painting so that she may produce inspiring artistic ice sculptures. Seeing more significant potential in her, Jasvir’s Head Chef pushed her into the cooking side of the hotel’s kitchen. Reluctant at first to move away from her beloved artistic work, Jasvir soon found her true vocation.
Now, with more than thirty years passed, Chef de Cuisine Jasvir San-Ghera, or Chef Mama Duu as she is more affectionately known, heads up the kitchen of Pirom, Intercontinental Hua Hin’s Thai restaurant. Having gone through a refresh and relaunch in December 2019, Pirom under Chef Mama Duu focuses on Thailand’s four culinary regions: North, South, Central and Northeast and the specialities within each. Chef Mama Duu’s lifetime of culi-

And so, our Pirom food journey started. Mieng Khun - historically a snack where small amounts of crispy toasted coconut, roasted peanut, dried shrimp, lime, shallots and ginger are placed in a betel leaf to create a bite-sized parcel. Pirom’s version uses pink lotus flower
petals instead of the betel leaf bringing a softer herbaceous note to the dish. Chef’s thick paste of sweet-sour and salty shrimp, palm sugar and tamarind sauce is the crowning glory.
fried together with chopped shallots, minced pork and shrimp meat, along with crushed roasted peanuts, and seasoned with fish sauce, and palm sugar — a mouth teaser and pleaser.
Mar Hor, which translates as ‘galloping horses’, is another canape style starter. Presented with simple elegance, pieces of fresh pineapple pushed back together to form a round and topped with the sticky caramelly sauce typically made from coriander root, garlic and ground white pepper,
Our final starter was Pooh Jah that had minced pork mixed with the sweet meat of Spanner Crab which is placed back into the crab shell and deep-fried. It was present simply with Chef’s dipping sauce and the delicate Antigonon (coral vine) flowers.

Our group enjoyed three main dishes. Ped Rom Kwan Rad with sauce Ma Kham – savoury smoked duck breast wonderfully complemented with the subtle sweetness of tamarind honey sauce. Tom Yum Goong Nam Khon – a classic Thai dish but enhanced by a Chef Mama Duu twist. Spicy lemongrass soup with prawns and homemade sweet chilli paste gave a luscious texture with creamy coconut milk. Theatrically presented, with the Tom Yum liquid added to the bowl of prawns and other ingredients at the table. The final main was Khao Soi Hang Nue – this famous Northern Thai noodle dish with egg noodle and beef in spicy curry sauce. The melt in your mouth beef, soft and crispy fried egg noodles, the condiments of shallot, pickled vegetables, lime cheeks, and most importantly the incredible flavour derived from the homemade curry paste - savoury, hearty and deeply satisfying.

For two of our desserts, Chef Mama Duu has reinterpreted two European classics in a contemporary Thai style. First, her Tea-Ramisu – taking an Italian classic with a robust Thai tea essence instead of coffee. The creamy texture of tiramisu is maintained and encircled with crispy wafers. The other - Panna Cotta Nam Tan Ta-Node. A Thai take on panna cotta made from coconut milk with palm tree sugar and melon, and complemented with a coconut milk ice-cream coloured and flavoured by purple sweet potato. The final dessert and an Asian classic was Kluay Tod - crispy banana fritter and smooth coconut ice cream. A hot-and-cold tropical fruit dessert of equally varied texture. Pirom’s reworked menu features classic and contemporary dishes along with special tasting and sharing selections great for families and groups. Also new are pairing menus that combine Thai dishes with alcohol and non-alcohol beverages such as Thai wines and herbal drinks. Guests have a choice of distinct dining settings – undercover alfresco dining on the timber deck overlooking the gardens, or intimate tables in their own salas sunken into and surrounded by a shimmering water feature, or inside and close to the open kitchen. The delicious flavour of Thai food has its basis in a combination of four elements - sour, salty, sweet, and spicy. The dishes our group experienced during our Pirom food journey indeed demonstrated the exquisite skill of Chef Mama Duu and her team in balancing these sometimes competing flavours. Chef Mama Duu confided in us that she has tried to add one more element to this combination – Yummy – and our group believes she had achieved that lofty aim. Pirom restaurant is open daily from 12.00 pm to 3.30 pm for lunch and from 6.30 pm to 10.30 pm for dinner. Thailand Yacht Show 2020
T
hailand’s premier experiential yachting event returned for its fifth year to celebrate Asia’s primary destination in the global yachting arena. From the 9th to the 12th of January, yachting aficionados and wealthy lifestyle enthusiasts from all over the region gathered at the Royal Phuket Marina to experience all aspects of the yachting lifestyle. The event showcased a spectacular display of boats, marine equipment & lifestyle products – including a number of new and exciting additions,

including a sponsored custom-built VIP Lounge in the Exhibition Hall, a Floating Bar in the Marina, an interactive Demonstration Platform, and more emphasis on family-friendly activities as well as more food and beverage opportunities on the Boardwalk. As Thailand’s largest and premier in-water boating event, all the major players in pleasure yachting were in attendance and visitors were allowed access to over 50 yachts along with the opportunity to meet with local brokers, property developers and bespoke
travel operators, as well as specialists within the hospitality and food and beverage industries. Royal Phuket Marina’s iconic Town Square played host to a daily-schedule of live music, fashion shows and classic car parades. Conceived and supported by the Thai government with a view to promote Thailand as the yachting and marina hub for Asia and attracting foreign yacht tourism, the event is held annually on the shores of the beautiful Phang Nga Bay in Phuket. It is the perfect environment to showcase Thailand’s
vibrant and expanding yachting and luxury lifestyle industries. After all, the event is more than just a display of boats and yachts; it gives participants an opportunity to experience boating first-hand alongside presentations of the latest luxury products and exceptional properties. The Thailand Yacht Show is a key marketing platform and revenue generator for the local industry as well as an opportunity to showcase Thailand as Asia’s premier cruising destination and a maritime heaven for leisure
boating enthusiasts. For four days, the marina was a bustling hub for all things luxurious. The line-up included leading names in the industry such as Simpson Marine, Lee Marine, Northrop and Johnson, Ace International Marines, Asia Marine and Fraser Yachts, to name a few. The governor of Phuket, Phakaphong Tavipatana, was in attendance at the opening ceremony which took place on the private island of Koh Rang Noi, only a short tender ride from the main exhibition. “Through the Thailand Yacht Show, Phuket gets
closer to its objective of becoming the preferred winter destination for highvalue international yachting tourists. “ He announced. “The global spotlight shines on Thailand with the Show combining the very best aspects of the yacht and super yacht lifestyle, bringing the biggest and most important brands to showcase their newest products and to do business on the beautiful shores of Phuket. All of this translates into direct and indirect economic benefit for our local economy.”

The Show’s main draw, of course, was the world-class selection of yachts and boats of all shapes and sizes for visitors to admire and (no matter what your budget) to charter or purchase. From small sailboats to super yachts, RIB’s to jet-skis, navigation systems and chandlery to the latest watersports toys, it was all there. Speaking of their in-water display, Richard Allen, General Manager of Simpson Marine, said “We are very pleased with our confirmed line-up at the 2020 Thailand Yacht Show. We presented six yachts including at least three Asia Premieres which is a great achievement and a showcase of Simpson Marine’s rich portfolio of the world’s leading brands. There will be something for everyone with models from San Lorenzo, Monte Carlo Yachts, Fairline Yachts, Benneteau, Lagoon Catamarans, and Aquila Power Catamarans. In addition, we will be promoting our own services with great offers on Yacht Charter both in Thailand and the rest of the world. Our Yacht Care Team will have packages for yacht owners seeking care-free ownership and we will also be offering advice on yacht registration as Simpson Marine is an authorised agent for the Langkawi Yacht Registry. As in every year, the show is a great chance to meet new and existing owners and yachting enthusiasts from Thailand and abroad.

Exhibiting for the first time at the Thailand Yacht Show 2020 was Asia Yachting, the fast-growing and highly successful dealer of Monte Carlo Yachts and Prestige Yachts from Hong Kong, now with an extended territory including Thailand and Singapore. CEO Olivier Besson was enthusiastic about the opportunities in the region that the Thailand and Singapore Yacht Shows present: “We are excited to be opening a new office in Phuket which will enable us to focus on sales in South East Asia, where we expect the market to grow considerably over the next few years. We are aware of all the efforts that TYS and SYS show organisers Verventia have been putting into developing the industry here, and we are delighted to support that effort - and hopefully make a few sales!

The company is also the distributor of the fabulous oceangoing luxury RIBS from Sacs Marine, and at the event, presented the Sacs Rebel 47, flagship of the Sacs range, the most stylish and luxurious 15m RIB on the market. Their front-row line-up was completed with the Jeanneau Cap Camarat 10.5Wa – another Thailand premiere. One of Thailand’s major dealers of the ever popular sailing and power catamarans, Multihull Solutions, presented Asian and world premieres from NEEL Trimarans and Asia Catamarans respectively. General Manager Andrew de Bruin explained “We have some terrific boats at TYS this year, and we’re finding the market demand for our speciality catamarans keeps on growing. We’ve always had good results from this show, and it’s really important that everyone continues to support - one day it will grow into something really special for the region.” Lovers of all things Italian rejoiced as famed boat builder Azimut Yachts displayed two brand-new models, and another highly successful British Brand Sunseeker also presented a front-line showpiece yacht to demonstrate the ultimate in high-fashion luxury boating. When asked about the future for Phuket as a hub for high-spending yacht tourism and the yachting industry in Asia, Andy Treadwell, CEO of event organiser Verventia, said “Phuket is now recognized as the center of one of the most beautiful yachting destinations in the world – the ASEAN seas rank alongside the Mediterranean and the Caribbean holiday cruising grounds. This should rightfully be the principal hub for boating and yacht tourism in Asia, known not just for its superb landscapes and seascapes, its tropical islands, clear waters and coral reefs, but also for its world class facilities, marinas, hospitality and service. A successful Thailand Yacht Show is important to the local boating fraternity as an ongoing link between brands, dealers, brokers, and local service providers to new industry contacts and new buyers - so we need support from all stakeholders. By joining together in a cohesive industry gathering, we can build an ever-growing show, delivering real results in a burgeoning marketplace that we should be driving ourselves.”

estled high among the mountains in the north of Thailand, Pai is a tiny town surrounded by secluded waterfalls and hiking trails that many consider as a backpacker’s mountain paradise. Once upon a time, it was a sleepy marketplace and although the relaxed atmosphere is still present—it is not as unknown as it used to be. Pai is about three hours away from Chiang Mai and most visitors take the bus there,

mainly for the picturesque mountain views. Doi Inthanon National Park lies on this route and is recommended for anyone who likes to explore authentic Thai villages, waterfalls, limestone caves and enjoy the wilderness. Although Pai doesn’t have the attractions of its more popular neighbor, it does have its charms. Pai offers a relaxed vibe to those who want to get away from the city and do nothing for
a while. Still that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do here. The main attraction of Pai is the Pai canyon, also known as Kong Lan. Free of charge, this is the perfect place to enjoy the stunning panoramic views or hike through the various trails and paths. Be warned however, the trail is not for the fainthearted and even in proper footwear, it is easy to slip on the narrow path and there are no fences on the cliff’s edge. If you are adventurous enough to try, the
climb is definitely a challenge worth overcoming. But the canyon is still a wonderful place to watch the sunset and no particular fitness skill is needed for that. The canyon is also a short drive away from the Pam Bok waterfall. Unlike other waterfalls such as Mae Yen waterfall and Mo Paeng waterfall, the Pam Bok waterfall is easily accessible and is the perfect place to cool down on a
warm summer day. On your way to the Pam Bok waterfall, do stop at the small property that is known as the Land Split. It used to be a working farm until a strange natural phenomenon caused the land to split and crack, rendering agriculture impossible here. While the split itself might not be that interesting, you will like the owners of the farm who turned the site into a tourist attraction. Friendly and welcoming, they offer visitors homemade snacks
with ingredients from their land such as Roselle juice, crispy bananas chips, peanuts, and tamarind. Although entrance to the whole establishment, even for tastings, is technically cost-free, a donation box sits on the counter, and the owners ask you to pay “what you think it is worth. Pai is infamous for its breathtaking vistas and the Chinese Viewpoint is no exception. Fifteen minutes ride from

Pai, the hike leading to the viewpoint is a bit tricky and steep but as it often is in Pai, the view is worth it. Visitors get a 360 degree view of rolling hills and mountains, villages and lush green fields and just as the Pai canyon is famous for its sunsets, this viewpoint offers a wonderful view of the sunrise. Visitors also get to experience a traditional Chinese tea ceremony at the viewpoint. Below the viewpoint lies Santichon Village. Although the village is mostly souvenir shops and restaurants, it does have some interesting traditional Chinese clay houses and the Mo Paeng waterfall is just down the road. Another great viewpoint is the Wat Phra That Mae Yen (Temple on the Hill). The main attraction of this viewpoint is the giant white statue of Buddha and visitors have the option of either driving straight to the top or climbing the 353 steps of the Naga staircase. A short drive away from the temple is the World War II Memorial Bridge. The walk across the bridge is quite short but it holds an interesting history although the original wooden structure was replaced by the steel structure that stands today. By forcing both villagers and elephants alike into hard labor, the bridge was originally built as a route for the Japanese army to invade Myanmar (then known as Burma). Although, the bridge was destroyed after the war, the villagers rebuilt it as it was a convenient way for them to travel in comparison to the log boats they used before. The bridge was reconstructed again in 1976 after a devastating flood and it stands there today as a testament of history. During night time, the length of the bridge is lit up by bulbs strung out along its railings. It makes a good stop for a stroll if sitting on the bike is getting a little tiresome.

If you’re really tired, head over to the hot springs for a relaxing soak. The Tha Pai Hot Springs is about fifteen minutes away from town and features a coldwater stream flowing over boiling-hot rocks to create a soothing, heated pool surrounded by lush scenery. Another option is the Sai Ngam Hot Springs. Less famous than the Tha Pai Hot Springs and about thirty minutes ride from town, it is also less crowded and considered to be more affordable. One last place to visit would be Tham Lod Cave. The journey itself is part of the charm, especially when you look out over the Pang Mapha viewpoint which signals roughly the halfway point between Pai and the cave. Another viewpoint known as the Kiw Lom offers an incredible view of the border of Myanmar and the valleys of Pai. Tham Lod Cave is home to many limestone stalactites and stalagmite formations, bats, wall paintings and even ancient teak wood coffins, believed to have been carved thousands of years ago. The Nam Lang river flows through the cave and considering it is 1.5 kilometers long, bamboo rafting is the only way to access most parts of the cave.

The town shines brightest as soon as the sun goes down, especially at the Walking Street on Rungsiyanon Road where you can enjoy dinner and find amazing handmade souvenirs. This is probably the only exciting nightlife attraction in town except for some bars playing really good live music. Pai is also known for its excellent food traditions and there are many trendy places to eat, mainly focused on coffee and healthy foods and if you prefer something more traditional, you can’t go wrong with khao soi- a creamy, yellow, coconut flavored curry mixed with egg noodles and soft, braised chicken. You can add extra spices such as onion, chili or vegetables to add even more flavor.
Another dish to seek out is coconut pancakes and promise, you will not be disappointed. In addition, Pai is host to a large bohemian community and both residents and visitors alike are involved in a number of activities like yoga, Muay Thai boxing, cooking classes and even fire dancing, juggling and slack lining over at the Pai Circus School. The best time to visit Pai is during the cooler season from about the end of November through to February. It does not rain much during that time so it is a great time to explore and although often busy in December, the crowds disperse in January. While
most visitors take the bus from Chiang Mai, there is also the option of flying to Pai from Chiang Mai with the journey taking only 25 minutes. Pai also makes for a perfect stopover for a day or more on the popular Mae Hong Son loop— a 650 kilometers long route that is considered one of the best motorbike circuits in Southeast Asia. Although Pai has certain attractions that you must definitely visit, it is still one of those places where you can laze about in a hammock and read a book or enjoy a sip of coffee as you watch the world pass by.

T
he Dakar Rally has always been one of the most popular races in the history of motorsport, resonating with both the fans and drivers that place it in line with other iconic racing events, such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Indianapolis 500, the Rallye Monte-Carlo and the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix. The adventure began back in 1977, when Thierry Sabine got lost on his motorbike in the Libyan desert during the Abidjan-Nice Rally. Saved from
the sands in extremis, he returned to France still in thrall of the landscape and promising himself he would share his fascination with as many people as possible. He proceeded to come up with a route starting in Europe, continuing to Algiers and crossing Agadez before eventually finishing at Dakar. The founder coined a motto for his inspiration: “A challenge for those who go. A dream for those who stay behind. Courtesy of his great conviction and that modicum of madness peculiar
to all great ideas, the plan quickly became a reality. The first Rally was organized in 1978 as the Paris-Dakar Rally, because the start of the race was in France and finish was in Senegal. 182 competitors (80 cars, 92 motorcycles and 12 trucks) participated in the inaugural event and 74 of them finished the race. After the 10,000km journey through France, northern and central Africa, the first overall winner was Cyril Neveu on a Yamaha motorcycle.

The best car driver and fourth overall was Alain Genestier with a Range Rover V8. The variety of competing cars was incredible for example, the second placed crew were brothers Claude and Bernard Marreau in a Renault 4 Sinpar. Some other leading cars were Fiat Campagnola, a Toyota BJ and a Lada Niva. The French capital was a regular starting point until 1994. Since then, the routes have been changed several times, so the event was commonly referred not as Paris-Dakar but just as The Dakar. In 2008, the event was cancelled due to security threats in Mauritania and from 2009, the Dakar Rally was held in South America. After the success of the inaugural race, the event rapidly grew in popularity and by 1982, the number of participants had doubled to 382. The 1987 event was marked as the start of official factory participation in the car category and in 1988, the maximum of 603 participants was reached. In the first years, the Dakar Rally was an event for mostly amateur racers, but growing popularity attracted some famous drivers, like the Formula One driver Jacky Ickx who debuted in 1981.

In their first attempt he and co-driver Claude Brasseur raced in a Citroen CX. The next year, they were fifth overall with Mercedes and in 1983, they triumphed with a Mercedes 280 GE. In total, Jacky Icxk competed 14 times at the Dakar Rally and scored two more podiums in 1986 with a Porsche, and with Peugeot in 1989. Porsche first appeared at The Dakar In 1984, and in the first attempt, their Porsche 911 4Ă—4 was victorious with Rene Metge and Dominique Lemoyne as the crew. Jacky Ickx also switched to Porsche and finished 6th in the car category. In 1987 Peugeot formed a factory team with the former world rally champion Ari Vatanen and he won the event. He won three more times in 1989, 1990 and 1991. Victorious cars were Peugeot 205 T16 Turbo Rally Raid and Peugeot 405 T16. In 1988, another world rally champion, Juha Kankkunen, was the winner of The Dakar, driving a Peugeot 405 T16.

Competitor Stephane Peterhansel holds the record with 13 wins at Dakar. In 1991, he won for the first time with Yamaha in the motorcycle category. He won six times with Yamaha before switching to cars in 1998. In 2004, Peter Hansel scored his first win in the car category with a Mitsubishi Pajero. He won two more times with Mitsubishi in Africa (2005 and 2007) and two times with Mini All4 Racing in South America (2012 and 2013). For the 2016 Dakar Rally, Hansel joined Peugeot’s Dream Team, along with Carlos Sainz, Cyril Despres and Sebastien Loeb. After lots of excitement, he reached his 12th victory, confirming his position as the best driver in history of Dakar. The next year, he increased his number of wins to thirteen, driving a new Peugeot 3008 DKR. In 2001, Jutta Kleinschmidt from Germany became the first and only female driver to win Dakar. Together with co-driver Andreas Schulz, she won driving a Mitsubishi Pajero with just two and a half minutes advantage over Hiroshi Masuoka after more than 6000 competitive kilometers.

One of the unusual winners of the Dakar Rally is surely Luc Alphand who was a famous World Cup ski racer before he switched to autos. In 1997 he won the World Cup overall title by collecting points only in the two speed disciplines, downhill and super G – a unique achievement in World Cup history. In 1998, he debuted at Dakar with Mitsubishi and competed 11 times. He won Dakar Rally in 2006 with a Mitsubishi Pajero. Unfortunately, that title is a consequence of numerous deaths of competitors and spectators.
