elcome to issue 1, Volume 6 of HOT Magazine. I’ve said it many times and I’ll say it again. One of the great things about living in a resort town like Hua Hin is all the fun events and festivals that happen throughout the year. One of the big yearly events in Hua Hin took place last month on December 23rd & 24th with the InterContinental World Tennis Thailand Championship. Flying in for the Exhibition matches were World No 1 ranked female tennis player Simona Halep along with, Karolina Pliskova world ranked number 4, Jelena Ostapenko, currently No 7 and Johanna Konta ranked 9th in the world. Fans were treated to two days of fantastic tennis at True Arena Hua Hin, where the tournament was held, and the female players enjoyed several days of taking in the sights of Hua Hin. Turn to page 40 for a recap of this great yearly event. Last year the Royal Passenger Liner Company started a daily Ferry service between Pattaya and Hua Hin and we can’t stop saying great things about it. Shaving over 3 hours off of the normal drive, the ferry takes just two hours door to door. We recently took the ferry from Hua Hin to Pattaya and spent several days at the beautiful AVANI Pattaya Resort & Spa. Its central location is adjacent to the beach road and connected

to a shopping mall. The AVANI is a stunning hotel which we are pleased to present in this month’s Let’s Stay. Check-in for yourself on page 58. Back in 1987 the song Heaven Is A Place On Earth launched Belinda Carlisle's solo career globally. Before going solo Belinda had attained stardom being the lead singer of the Go Go’s, one of the most successful female bands of all time selling 8 million albums in three years. Fast forward 30 years and Belinda is still touring as well as being an activist for causes that she is passionate about. One of the things Belinda holds dear is her love of Thailand, spending several months a year here. HOT Magazine had the distinct pleasure of sitting down with Belinda for a one on one during her most recent visit to the Kingdom. Flashback to the 80’s and discover what it was like to be a Go Go on page 66. Thailand is a boater’s paradise due to its beautiful crystal-clear waters and marvelous islands with endless sandy beaches. Hefty taxes have been done away with when buying a boat and the country is making it easier for large yachts with international crews to visit the Kingdom for extended stays. Dig out your boat shoes and turn to page 74 to find out the top 10 places we think your large yacht should visit in 2018. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month. As always, thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

HOT AROUND HUA HIN Hyatt Hotels And Resorts Of Thailand Donates To The Beaumont Ruam Pattana School The Beaumont Ruam Pattana School in Chaiyaphum province was the recent benefactor of a 1.255 million baht donation given by Hyatt Hotels and Resorts of Thailand. The school was established to serve needy rural communities and offers a high standard of education to ordinary children free of charge with just a commitment from their families to contribute ten hours minimum a month to the running of the school. The money was raised at a Charity gala dinner held at the Hyatt Regency Hua Hin and THE BARAI as part of the eighth annual Hyatt Open at Banyan Golf Club Hua Hin. This yearly

Vintage Cars And Classic Party Goers At The Sheraton The 14th annual Hua Hin Vintage Car Parade’s Gala Dinner was a celebration of the Vintage Car Club of Thailand. in recognition of the era of their muchloved motor cars. Apart from the ‘tasters’, the five course dinner was accompanied by subdued jazz classics, including many compositions by jazz lover the late King Bhumibol. Some audience participation was also featured as the night progressed with musical talent on show from both guitarists and singers, a pleasant surprise to those unfamiliar with the musical abilities of

prominent Club Members. Achieving early prominence in the 1920’s, Hua Hin could be considered a vintage town which has now come of age. Apart from the longstanding hosting of the Vintage Car Club’s expedition here, “Homecoming’ was a very appropriate theme for this year’s event, both because of the era of the vehicles and their classic party goers.

n 2017 there was much controversy in Bangkok when a local government agency said they wanted to rid Bangkok of a lot of its street food vendors and relegate the remaining smaller number to approved designated areas. The public backlash was instantaneous. For many around the world, Bangkok and its street food are synonymous. Books have been published and television shows created around Bangkok’s street food scene. While the food is usually delicious, sometimes the locale can be less than desirable. Heat, noise and smells can all detract from the overall experience. But what if… We recently had the pleasure of dining at Bangkok Heightz, located on the 39th floor of The Continent Hotel. The restaurant has paired authentic Thai street food cuisine with an excellent dining spot, overlooking the popular Asok-Sukhumvit area, home to Bangkok’s trendiest nightclubs and shopping. Bangkok Heightz takes Thailand’s renowned street food, known for its complex blend of spices, herbs, and flavours, and elevates it to new heights. The restaurant takes all of Thailand’s top dishes and brings them to a new level; think luxury street eats with a twist; authentic recipes in a refined environment. The Thai cuisine here is authentic from top to bottom throughout the menu, found both in the food and the drinks. On the night we were fortunate enough to dine, we started the evening with a few of their signature cocktails. Highly recommended are the CHAOPRAYA, which is concocted with Vodka, Vanilla Syrup, Lime, Fresh Passion Fruit & Fresh Watermelon, and the fan favorite, their BANGKOK HEIGHTZ, made with Vodka, Absinthe, Cointreau, Ginger, Lime, Apple Juice, Kiwi and Passion Fruit.

Our menu for the evening began with an appetizer and we chose their Chicken Satay. The chicken had been flavorfully marinated in Thai spices and was served with a generous serving of peanut sauce. Starting the mains, we began with a Stir-Fried Chicken with Cashew Nuts which was beautifully presented inside half of a pineapple. Next to table was their Lobster Rad Prik. Normally it’s made with shrimp which are covered by a sweet and sour sauce made of tamarind, brown sugar, chilies, and Thai herbs, but here it’s served on fine Canadian lobster, boiled exactly for three minutes prior to frying. Always a treat when you can enjoy Canadian Lobster in Thailand! That fine dish was followed by their Grapao Pla, Thailand’s signature holy basil, here fried in a tempered wok with chilies and served on delectable Snow Fish. The final main entrée item arrived which was a wonderfully tasting stirfried Soft-Shelled Crab, covered with a black peppercorn sauce and served with a salted egg.

Of course, a meal isn’t complete without desert and we stuck with a Thai standard which is a favorite of mine, that being their Mango with Sticky Rice. Again, a beautiful presentation with lots of the sweet coconut cream sauce as an accompaniment. Using the finest high-end ingredients combined with age-old recipes make Bangkok Heightz one of the best choices for Thai food in Krung Thep. Along with the fine food and drink, Bangkok Heightz is also trendy and cool place to hangout up above the crowds, as there is a DJ booth pumping out the latest tunes, making it an after-dinner venue as well. For rooftop dining and authentic cuisine, Bangkok Heightz Thai food simply cannot be beat. TRUE ARENA NEWS

FITNESS TIP – IT’S ABOUT THE FOOD If there is one thing we have in abundance in Thailand, it’s great meals coupled with every imaginable celebration one can conjure up. Having great food around while surrounded by loved ones during Thailand’s many holidays can add up to unwanted Kilo’s. To help you get through the temptation without upsizing your wardrobe, True Arena has prepared some handy premeal tips and some simple, calorieconscious advice to follow when you sit down to eat.

Tip 1: Don't attend gatherings hungry Make sure you eat a light meal before a feast, mostly made up of protein. This will help you muster the discipline you need in the face of temptation. Try to eat a high protein snack or fruit an hour or two before the big meal. Gorging on high-calorie treats when you are famished will cause you to consume a whole load of them.

032 909 633

info@truearenahuahin.com Facebook: truearenahuahin

Tip 2: A holiday feast is not an all-you-can-eat buffet! We’re not suggesting you go on a hunger strike; by all means enjoy your favorite dishes. But just because it’s in front of you doesn’t mean you should eat till you can barely move. Overeating any type of food, whether it’s a wholesome one or a less than healthy option, is never a good idea. A better idea is to share your favorite dishes with friends or loved ones, not only is it a great way to bond, it’ll also stop you from overeating.

Tip 3: Go easy on the drinks A single can of soft drinks can contain about 80 – 150 calories. So when you can, request for beverages which have reduced sugar or those with none at all, and perhaps just avoid soft drinks. Remember, water is a refreshing alternative, and with a twist of lemon or mint it’s a hydrating and tasty alternative.

www.truearenahuahin.com Instagram: truearenahuahin Twitter: @truearenahuahin

Tip 4: Go on, give yourself a treat! You don’t need to totally deprive yourself. After all, everyone’s entitled to a little indulgence. If you’re careful with your portion sizes – the smaller, the better – you’ll have less calories and less guilt to deal with! So it’s not difficult to maintain a healthy diet. For example, you can set a reasonable limit on how many cookies, cakes or sweets you intend to eat per day. Or take half as much as you would usually eat. At the end of the day, surviving food temptations comes down to the basics: Eat in moderation every day and stay active. George Grecia Director of Sports Development

L et’s Go, Lhong 1919

T

he art of reviving old cultural relics is something people have been doing for years, decades and centuries. In Bangkok, a rapidly developing mass urban setting, it could be easy – and in many cases even forgivable – to think that every old brick is being knocked over to make way for the towering edifications that loom tall over the city, further cementing its increasing reputation as a concrete jungle. But

32

HOT Magazine

this is definitely not always the case. One of the exceptions to the rule, in what was previously a worn down 2.4 acre complex by the vicinities of the Chao Phraya River. is Lhong 1919. Lhong 1919’s history dates back to the 19th century. It was founded in 1850. Back in the day, Sino-Thai merchants who made their homes on the banks of the river, were in charge of the trade that circulated

through the Chao Phraya. But while this was their primary base, Lhong 1919 was most importantly a hub for trade. The place was compared to an international port of sorts, which drew people from all corners of the continent as they looked to strike deals within the flourishing economy that was the Kingdom of Siam. Founded by a man of the nobility who lived during the reign of King Rama V, it quickly became a symbolic

market for traders. The nobleman Huay Chong Lhong, was an investor in steamboats and his name translates in Chinese to Steamboat Pier. It would fall into disuse after the Port Authority acquired its shares and was all but forgotten, until it was bought again by the notable Wang Lee family. Currently under their ownership, Lhong 1919 sits right in front of the famous Wang Lee mansion which

is open for the public to visit. At the site, those who wish for success and riches can ask for luck at the Mazo Shrine, which is 167 years old. At its point of greatest splendour back in the day, the Chinese merchants who congregated on the banks of the river would pray to the gods for fulfilment in their endeavours and undertakings. It was at one point a major beacon of significance for Thai people of Chinese origin, who

would hold important gatherings and ceremonies at Lhong 1919. In fact, so important was the pier, that it received a state visit of Empress Xi when she travelled to the Kingdom of Siam on an official state visit to King Rama V. Well wishers allegedly flocked to the river banks where they played out performances of Chinese opera, also known as ngiew, and filled with Toh Chin, which translates to Chinese Tables in Thai.

HOT Magazine

33

The former of the two, an art which today has mostly been lost, was brought back to life for the new awakening of Lhong 1919. Ngiew was in its hay day the prime source of entertainment for the majority of the Thai Chinese population. Having been brought from mainland China, ngiew, which combines ancient Chinese literature, dance, song, music and martial arts into a boastful display of colours, masks and succinctly choreographed performances was one of the greater works of art that saw a re-emergence amongst the hipster crowd that mostly attended the opening day of

34

HOT Magazine

the remodelled age old pier. On its opening day back in November 2017, Lhong 1919 drew masses of people in an event well anticipated due to its marketing campaign. The pier, which had been all but forgotten by the soul of a city which a long time ago shifted away from this former central business district, was again alive. And they were very far from disappointed. Activities at Lhong 1919 were plentiful, which – though having catered to the commercialised necessities of the 21st century – remains a hub that draws from the

essence of the most classic Chinese influence. More than two hundred years of history are embodied in its refurbished architecture, which make it a fantastic place in which to reminisce and meditate on the influence the pier had back in the day. But for those who prefer keeping memories of the visuals, Lhong 1919 is currently one of the more photogenic spaces in town, making it the perfect place for those who live for the camera. From amateur selfie enthusiasts to professional or dedicated photographers, the places boasts an air of the mysticism for which it was once known.

The décor is admirable. Deliberately faded murals which disappear out into the background, demonstrate through classic Chinese art styles the life they led when the spot occupied an important role in the kingdom’s economy. Some aspects have been subtly upkept by artist paying the utmost attention to detail, while others such as the doors and the window frames – which are made out of teak – have been left to display their original charm. The combination is striking, as even the more modern parts of this remodelling keep the essence of what it meant to represent. The faded old details mesh with the modern characteristically predominance of red, which exudes a vibrant and energetic setting. The result is a neat central court with shortly cut grass and new concrete paving combined with worn out walls to which are attached modern wooden staircases. If you want to admire from the ground, sit on one of the stylish wooden benches. Those are placed on the grass and look up to the main structure of the u-shaped complex. Etchings can be found on some of the older walls – these clearly drawn recently – which make them looks incredibly authentic and ancient. Of course, the pinch of modernity has now translated into stalls, booths, restaurants and shops. These serve traditional Thai food, from snacks to desserts such as pancakes. They also serve drinks, selections of popular teas and the usual refreshments. Chains have made their mark: iBerry has a branch where they sell their usual selection of waffles, ice cream and other sweet treats. The vicinities are definitely not short of spaces where people can take a break and grab a bite or a take a few sips of something. On the shopping front, while the options aren’t immense, they’re definitely for the higher spenders. Eight local shops sell branded goods to attract the wealthier crowds, from expensive furniture and leather goods to clothing.

Getting to Lhong 1919 is not the most convenient of commutes, as it will take a taxi ride from BTS station Saphan Thaksin or Krung Thon Buri. If you’re on a boat though, it’s advisable that you use Wat Thong Thammachat Pier. The plan is for the old pier – the one which once carried scores of business and wealth into the economy of the Siamese kingdom – to be made usable again and allow people easy access through a charming boat ride, just the way it was done in the old days by Chinese merchants and businessmen from around the continent. Now known as the Wang Lee pier, its opening is has yet to be announced but is due soon.

All in all, Lhong 1919 represents the vivid essence of Thailand’s once flourishing pier, and recounts the history of the Thai Chinese’s former cultural settings through a modern eye and a fresh start. The space is open every day of the week from 10 o’clock in the morning until 10 o’clock in the evening. The famous 167 year old shrine is open from 8 o’clock in the morning to 8 o’clock in the evening. If you have yet to see the renewed look of the pier or if you have a strong interest in garnering knowledge about the history of the Thai Chinese people, Lhong 1919 is definitely a place worth going to.

ith flashlights popping and cameras whirring, “what would you wish for?” was the question posed to four of the Top 10 ranking women’s tennis players as they sat on stage at the Intercontinental Hotel Hua Hin. The players were to give alms to local Buddhists monks the following morning. The press conference emcee wanted to know what their wishes would be after receiving the monk’s blessings. A moments silence ensued as the players were unsure how to answer. When prompted WTA ranked World No 1 Simona Halep, Karolina Pliskova world number 4, and Johanna Konta ranking 9th all agreed that winning a Grand Slam event was their wish. The fourth player on stage and the youngest, Jelena Ostapenko, currently No 7 in the world, admitted she would love to win another Grand Slam having secured her first, the 2017 French Open, just a few months back. With the first of the 2018 Grand Slams, The Australian Open (AO), just 3 weeks away, all four players were in Hua Hin for the “Intercontinental World Tennis Thailand Championship 2017”. Their focus clear – continue their preseason training to ensure they were ready for Melbourne. They saw the Hua Hin event as an ideal inclusion for their 2018 preparations thanks to True Arena having the same Hard Court plexicushion surface as the Australian Open’s Melbourne Park. In its eighth year, the “Intercontinental World Tennis Thailand Championship” highlights the international standard tennis facilities Thailand, and specifically, Hua Hin has to offer and was televised live on True nationally and internationally on Tennis Channel USA and Fox Sports Australia to name just two. After 2 days of competitive tennis, Simona Halep won the “Intercontinental World Tennis Thailand Championship”. The Romanian, faced off with Karolina Pliskova, from the Czech Republic with the final overcome for the two sets (6-2, 6-3). According to WTA statistics, of the six times, these players had met, Halep has won five times, and lost only once. Semifinals at this year’s French Open Grand Slam Tournament was the last time they met with Simona Halep winning 2 sets to 1 (6-4, 3-6, 6-3). Speaking at the winner's presentation ceremony, 25-year-old Halep commented, "Thank you all for the encouragement during these two days and thanks also to the organisers. I'm very pleased to win this championship because the champions here (Intercontinental Thailand Championship Hua Hin) have been very successful in the Australian Open.”

Third and fourth place was fought out between Johanna Konta and Jelena Ostapenko. 26-year-old Konta, from the United Kingdom, had not played competitive tennis since August 2017 due to injury and was looking to get her career back on track. Jelena Ostapenko, from Latvia, at only 20 years is a rising star, after becoming a Grand Slam champion at the French Open 2017. Both women wanted to start their year in the best way possible. Final scores were (6-3, 6-2) with Johanna Konta taking the win after a very tightly fought match. The December 23 and 24 tournament were not only about these Top 10 women's players. Sixty-five local children participated in a coaching clinic with Simona Halep, Johanna Konta and Jelena Ostapenko giving of their time to share tips, guidance and to inspire these young locals to keep working hard at their tennis dreams. PBI Tennis Academy players based at True Arena also had the opportunity to help Johana Konta and Simona Halep with their preseason preparations through regular practice sessions in the few days before and after the Championship.

True Arena Tennis Director, Arturo Ng summed up the benefits locally when he explained “The kids got the chance to play with the top players during kid’s clinic. PBI Academy players learnt how to train with discipline, intensity and purpose on every practice. They also gained more belief in their abilities and motivation to aim for higher career goals. Overall, what a great promotion for tennis in Thailand.” Tournament organisers also see this event as providing a fantastic opportunity to promote Thailand's tourism, culture and food. To this end, players participated in several activities including a Thai Cooking Class with ‘Aunty’ Jay Fai, a Bangkok Street Food icon and newly awarded Michelin starred Chef. Players also had the opportunity to make merit with Buddhist monks on the second morning of the tournament. Karolina Pliskova noted during the final prizegiving ceremony, “Getting to this tournament is a great preparation for the Australian Open. Over the past few days, I have enjoyed staying in Hua Hin, and my most favourite thing was to offer food to monks and learning about Thai culture.”

At the award ceremony, Mr Suwat Lipatapanlop, former Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Asian Tennis Federation (ATF), awarded a 16-inch Red Benjarong plate with a beautiful golden Pikul pattern to Championship winner Simona Halep. Runnerup Karolina Pliskova received a Thai Yellow 14-inch Benjarong bowl with a water-drop pattern. Both Benjarong plates are unique and distinctly Thailand. All four world-ranking tennis players also received a memorial painting completed by local artists over the course of the two-day tournament. As the players made their farewells to Hua Hin and Thailand, off to other lead-up tournaments before the Australian Open, they must be thanked for showcasing their sport and being Champions of their game. Hua Hin Day Trips Caves, Wines & Wild Elephants

By Michael Cullen

L

ow-key and uncrowded, fronted by a five-kilometre beach, the town of Hua Hin is surrounded by three of Thailand’s biggest national parks. Its central location on the gulf coast means easy access to plenty out-oftown beaches, too, fresh seafood comes cheap, and Bangkok is always just three hours away. So why doesn’t Hua Hin get more of the 32 million tourists who visit Thailand every year? It’s certainly

48

HOT Magazine

popular with Thais, but you’ll find more foreigner holidaymakers in Phuket, Koh Samui and the north. Whatever the reason, for my wife Vivien and I, living in Hua Hin since 2015, this is part of the attraction. It keeps the costs down and the crowds reasonable so we can enjoy the great beaches; natural beauty and wildlife in the nearby national parks; and historical elements of Hua Hin that have made it the “Royal Coast”. We do have the international hotels,

championship level golf courses, modern infrastructure, and all the elements people coming to Thailand look for—just at a less frantic pace. We’ve been exploring the region since arriving, and thought it was time to share some of the best day trips from town. Whether you’re just on holiday or scouting Hua Hin as a potential retirement haven, try not to miss these excursions…

Wild Elephants You’ll see elephants in many places across Thailand. Typically, they’re domesticated, but if you want to see some in the wild the best place is the Kui Buri National Park, just over an hour’s drive south of Hua Hin.

The drivers and guides who take you through the park are actually local farmers who, for years, fought with the elephants to protect their crops. But in 1999 large grass prairies were created on 12,000 rai (approx. 4,700 acres) of land within the park’s boundaries. This meant the elephants had enough to eat without rampaging through farmers’ fields. Over the last 18 years the wildlife population has increased to over 200 wild elephants and 150 gaurs (the world’s largest wild cattle species). The elephants now offers farmers and other local people income– so elephants have gone from enemy to friend. You can’t take your own vehicle into the park proper and must go with the approved tour vehicles and guides (800 Baht). Perched on wooden benches in the back of a ‘pick-up’ trucks with your guide (and chief wildlife spotter) beside you, off you set. Tours typically start mid-afternoon when the wildlife start getting active again after the heat of the day. You take a circular route stopping at several locations where elephants, if about, can be easily seen. Overall you can spend three to four hours travelling through the park. Everyone we know who has done this tour have had multiple sightings of elephants – so a good success rate! We certainly did, thanks to our ever watchful guide! We also captured some great photos and I was even able to take a short video of a small family of Guar that were just 30 meters from our vehicle.

Thai Wineries About a 45-minute drive inland sits the vast Monsoon Valley Vineyard. Driving from town you’ll pass through aloe vera and pineapple plantations. You can buy freshly picked fruit straight from the farmer from their rustic roadside stalls. The size of vineyard is the first surprise, it covers an expansive 162 hectares (400 acres) of verdant countryside –it’s not some twee tourism venture. The vines stretch out in long rows as far as you can see. A temple glistens gold in the far distance. Hedges of manicured bougainvillea line one side of the entrance road as you make your way past the vines and into the vineyard proper. Sitting in prime position atop the hill overlooking the vineyard is the main ‘sala’. This large Thai-inspired open-air pavilion houses the tasting rooms, wine bar, bistro, retail shop and wine cellar. There is also an

50

HOT Magazine

educational exhibit on viticulture and oenology. Visitors can take guided vineyard tours in safari-style Land Rovers. For the more independent, there are the mountain bikes, or you can simply stroll by foot amongst the vines. A more exotic option is to jump on one of the vineyards elephants—you don’t get the tour commentary but seeing the vineyard atop an elephant is special. I highly recommend lunch at the bistro, especially combined with a wine-tasting package makes for a fantastic long lunch overlooking the vines! Try the spicy grilled beef sirloin salad with lemongrass, Thai herbs and red grapes, or Vivien’s favourite, the sesame crusted salmon salad with a spicy red wine vinegar dressing. The premium wine tasting package with generous samples of Colombard, White Shiraz (Rose) and Shiraz greatly

compliment a quality lunch. The vineyard has been operating since 2004 under the Monsoon Wines label. These wines are part of a growing movement called ‘New Latitude Wines’ i.e. wines produced outside the traditional regions of 30 and 50 degrees latitude in either the northern or southern hemispheres. Thailand, Vietnam, and India are three countries leading the way for these wines. Just 28 kilometres north of Hua Hin, you’ll find a wide, long and flat beach with gentle surf at Cha Am. Casuarina trees line the foreshore and locals have set-up a multitude of sun beds, deck chairs and umbrellas where for 100 baht you can laze about for the whole day. Beach side stalls will cook delicious and inexpensive Thai food to order and deliver it right to your sun bed along with a cold drink.

A Mystical Cavern Sam Roi Yot National Park is 40 kilimetres south of Hua Hin and covers 98 square kilometres. The park is divided into two sections by the limestone peaks it takes its name from "Mountain (Khao) of Three Hundred Peaks (Sam Roi Yot)". The entry fee of 200 baht gives you access to both sections for a day, although it’s worth more than a day visit. The park's highlight for many is the coastal section. Phraya Nakhon Cave is short-listed among the most magnificent caves in Southeast Asia, and it is truly beautiful. Although there are several caves in the park, Phraya Nakhon is the most famous, thanks to the presence of Kuha Karuhas (Royal) pavilion. The cave is formed from two caverns with natural erosion of the limestone providing a dramatic result. Light streams down through large openings in the cavern roof to illuminate the darkness and encourage plant life. At the centre of the main cavern, bathed in light and framed by trees on one side and stalactites and stalagmites on the other, sits the beguiling Kuha Karuhas (royal) pavilion with its saddled roof, sparkling upturning finials and statue of Phraya Nakhon. Folk stories suggest one-time local ruler, Phraya Nakhon, stumbled upon the cave after his ship was forced ashore in bad weather some 200 years ago. His dramatic discovery has since been recognised by visits from several Thai Kings, including visits by recently deceased King Bhumibol.

In 1890 to mark the first royal visit from King Rama V, the Kuha Karuhas pavilion was built. Its precise positioning ensured sunlight showers over it mid-morning. The ceiling of the cavern is estimated at 50 metres high, with various side caves accommodating spooky shrines, and another area occupied by Pagoda stone cairns giving the sense of an ancient graveyard. The cave is a two-kilometre walk (which takes around an hour) from the track entrance at Bang Pu village. Bring sensible walking shoes and enough water as the track is a little challenging. It’s best to be in the cave around 10 a.m. to see the royal pavilion sunlit in the most glorious light. There are beach side restaurants awaiting your return to Bang Pu village for a rewarding, tasty and inexpensive lunch!

Blessed with Beaches: Hua Hin is a beach town and developing a reputation as the best place in Thailand for kitesurfing thanks to nearly 10 months of ideal wind conditions. The shallow warm waters also make it one of the safest places to learn this sport. But when you tire of the five-kilometre arc of sand in front of the town there are other beaches to choose from…

and stretches for seven-kilometres south to the small community of Khao Tao. The northern end of Khao Takiab is where the action is. Beachside boutique resorts, small cafés and local restaurants line the beach offering umbrella covered sun beds. Eucalyptus and Casuarina trees also provide their own natural cooling shade. You can get an Thai-style or European hour-long massage for 300 baht and, for the more active, there’s horse riding along the beach or golf at the Sea Pines Golf Course that borders the beach. Sai Noi beach is directly south of Khao Takiab and only 15 kilometres from central Hua Hin. This small beach with its own Beach Club is where you can ‘get away from it’ whilst enjoying all the facilities and service the Beach Club and beach front facilities have to offer. The drop-off from the beach is pronounced here, but you can use of the Beach Clubs two pools if you prefer. Dolphin Bay is just 45 kilometres south of Hua Hin and is named for the pod of Indo-pacific humpback dolphins, five or six of which are pink, that live in the bay for 10 months of the year. The bay’s five kilometre beach is ideal for sunbathing, beach volleyball, and long walks or jogging, especially at sunrise or sunset.

Khao Takiab beach is the next beach immediately south of Hua Hin

A Conversation With Music Icon

Belinda Carlisle

B

ack in 1987 the song Heaven Is A Place On Earth launched Belinda Carlisle's solo career globally. Before going solo Belinda had attained stardom for being the lead singer of the Go Go’s, one of the most successful female bands of all time. It’s been 40 years since the punk-influenced Californian teenager sat on the curb of a Hollywood sidewalk drinking beers with her gal pals and set about forming the band. Within three years they not only had the number one album in America but had broken down the door for every female guitar group that followed. That number one album, Beauty and the Beat, included the smash hits We Got The Beat and Our Lips Are Sealed. Their stardom was well televised. Just a month before MTV aired for the first time, the Go Go’s mega hit single Our Lips Are Sealed was released. Songs from their double-platinum album "Beauty and the Beat" were soon in constant video rotation. Rolling Stone magazine called them “The world’s best female rock band.”

66

HOT Magazine

The Go Go’s sold more than eight million albums in three years and counted Kurt Cobain and British acts like The Specials and Madness amongst their biggest fans. But by 1985 Carlisle was ready for the fresh challenge of a solo career. Her Gold certified solo album debut, Belinda was released in 1986 spawning the hit single, Mad About You, before her second album, Heaven On Earth, elevated her to the next level as one of the most successful female artists of the decade. Heaven Is A Place On Earth is one of those career records that transcends its place in time. A number one hit in both the US and the UK, it reached the top spot in 8 different countries, earning Belinda Carlisle a prestigious Grammy nomination for Best Pop Female Vocalist in the esteemed company of Whitney Houston, Carly Simon, Suzanne Vega and Barbra Streisand. Belinda spends several months each year in Thailand and loves to visit Hua Hin, always staying at the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort. HOT Magazine recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Belinda to discuss her amazing trajectory in the music business.

HM: Belinda, did you know as a young girl that you wanted to be a famous musician or did your life unfold before you? BC: The only thing I ever wanted to do when I was little girl was to travel around the world so I wanted to be a travel agent because I thought that would be a good way to see the world. As a teenager however I thought that being in a rock band would be a better way to see the world. At that time the punk rock movement was happening in the States – actually in the UK also – which gave the opportunity to all these kids to play music who would normally never have the chance. They could be terrible but still get gigs at the clubs, and actually, if you were terrible that was cool. I was in a couple of punk bands, a band called the germs, and then Metro Squad where I was a backup singer. From there I found the Go Go’s, and that was the beginning of my career as a singer. I never really had aspirations to be a singer, I just loved music growing up and I just kinda fell into it.

HM: How did the Go Go’s come to be formed? BC: Back in 1977, there were 50 kids in the punk scene in LA, and everybody was in a band, and they were horrible, most of them. We were sitting on the curb one night, drinking beer and probably on acid and it was basically; hey, let’s form a band, what are you going to do? “I’m gonna play bass” I actually wanted to play bass but someone took that. It was basically like tapping something, “I tap guitar, I tap bass, so I had a choice between playing drums – which I did not want to do – or singing, and that’s how the band was formed. And we had Charlotte who was a guitar player who joined the band because she knew how to plug guitars into the amplifiers. HM: How long after the Go Go’s started making music did you realise the trajectory of success you and your band mates were heading for? BC: Well, the minute we formed the band, you know, our first show we sold out. We never had a problem getting people to come see us. We thought we were the greatest singers in the city. Within a year we were playing in New York, San Francisco, L.A and had really established a name for ourselves. You couldn’t get a ticket to a Go Go’s show. But, record executives would come to our shows and say “we love you because everybody loves you but we can’t sign you because you’re women and there’s been no track record of an all female band that’s been a success, so I’m sorry”.

HM: Do you think getting that kind of response it made you push harder? BC: No, I don’t think it made us push harder. We went on tour, we were on our way to England to open up for Madness & The Specials which were two bands back in the 80’s. Madness were so huge in Europe that as a favour they got their record company to release the Go Go’s song “We Got the Beat.” The Sales Rep didn’t like the song but they pleaded with them and We Got the Beat became a big dance hit in the States. So, we knew at that point that we just needed to keep our heads down and work hard. We had a manager who was also a woman, female roadies, no guys allowed, it was a girl’s club and our manager had a clear vision. HM: What were your early days of fame like? BC: Well you have to understand that most bands take years and years to make it. When we formed the band in 1977 we had no idea how to play instruments or how to write music. We used to write songs by putting masking tape on the neck of the guitar and writing songs by numbers, fret 6 to fret 3 etc. and that’s how a lot of our stuff was written. We went from that in 1977 to being the number one band three years later, really working hard.

But we had no expectation and we did not know it was going to explode like it did. So you know, seeing yourself on the cover of every magazine and have people call your name as you walk down the street… back then I didn’t have the confidence to be able to handle it, it always made me feel really weird, and undeserving. There was also all the self-sabotage like drugs and things that go along with that. When you’re that young there’s no positive way to handle it. It’s very hard to come out the other side and not be damaged. In the U.S. the paparazzi can be quite aggressive, here in Thailand I don’t think it’s that way, even for bigger bands there is a level of respect, they’re not in their face, even though they are huge stars here, these people can still enjoy somewhat of a life. In the US it’s as if you’re in a fish bowl… I’ve had my picture taken at the grocery store. You know, putting my groceries in the car then seeing it in the papers and I’m not even that news worthy, they bug me. They have no respect for people. HM: Were you excited frightened by a solo career?

or

BC: I didn’t know anything else,

so I assumed I had the opportunity to do a solo career but I was freaked out. Going on stage without the security blanket of four of the girls, it was difficult.

always challenging but I don’t get nervous. Thank god!

HM: But there was an adjustment period, it wasn’t necessarily excitement, it was just what it was, right?

HM: With all the success came the rock n’ roll lifestyle, you were a party girl to the point where even John Belushi felt he needed to give you the speech about the perils of drugs and fame. When you look back on those years, what do you feel about them?

BC: Well, yeah of course. The success of my first two albums established me and validated me as a singer and a recording artist so that was exciting. But I think to that point, it was exciting making the album, but I didn’t think about having to actually go out and support it and be on stage on my own. Then it was horrifying, absolutely horrifying.

BC: I have no regrets. I mean, I had a great time, and so wild, but, they’re good memories and they actually really made me who I am now. You know, I look at 99.9% of those times most of the times with a smile. But there’s nothing really that I regret. When you’re that young with no responsibilities and rich and famous…

HM: Do you still get that? You don’t get that right now, right?

HM: In 1986 you married movie producer Morgan Mason, son of Oscar winning actor James Mason and Pamela Mason and you have one son together Did married life and motherhood slow you down as far as working and partying?

BC: No, I’m rarely nervous when I’m on stage. It’s so easy, it’s second nature for me. HM: Do you find it harder to talk to someone one on one instead of large groups? BC: When I do shows it’s easier for me to be in a stadium where everything looks like a big blur than it is for a small club, it’s harder work and it’s more intimate, people expect more than just singing the songs. It’s

BC: No! (Laughs) Not at all. No, I mean, no, it didn’t. I don’t really know what to say, my husband is really supportive and for years and years I sort of led a double life and he didn’t. I was partying so much and that’s another story but no, it didn’t stop me there.

HM: And how about having your son? BC: No, that didn’t stop me either. When I got sober about 13 years ago my son was around 13 years old, and that’s when I started making up for lost…, the only real regret I have is not having been the kind of mother that I should have been for my son because I was not really very present as a mother because I was such a mess. HM: At the beginning… BC: Yeah at the beginning. HM: Because you’re obviously very present now… BC: Yeah and that’s how I made up for lost time. HM: In 2010 you wrote a memoir called Lips Unsealed which dug deep into your personal life in the past. Was it difficult to put your life out there for others to read about or was it quite cathartic? BC: It was fairly easy for me to talk about. But I have to say the experience of writing a book was like therapy times 100 because a lot of realisations I came to during that, I didn’t come to during my therapy sessions or my 12 step program. So it was pretty intense at times, I don’t think I’d do it again.

HOT Magazine

HM: Last year saw the 30th anniversary of Heaven is a Place on Earth, when you recorded that song did you think that it would shoot you into stardom like it did? BC: I knew it had the potential of a global number one hit but I never really knew because of what’s going on with the charts and that, there are a lot of variables, but I knew it had a lot of potential. HM: Where can your fans see you in 2018? BC: I have a lot of dates in the States and then I have Australia too so, I’ll be doing some stuff in Europe but for the most part it will be in the states. HM: You led an extraordinary life. What moments really stand out? BC: Probably the Hollywood Hall of Fame is probably one that comes to mind, but I mean I’ve had a lot of amazing moments in a forty year career.

HM: You are a big animal rights supporter. In 2018 you drove a tuk tuk across India to raise awareness for animal causes. Have you always been a strong supporter of animal rights and why did you choose India? BC: I’m a lifelong animal advocate, I did the first “I’d rather go naked than wear fur” Prada campaign with the Go Gos. I’m part of an organisation called Mercy for Animals promoting veganism and I always wanted to have a donkey sanctuary. I also love dogs and I love India, so I thought I had to find a way to combine the two. I see there’s a big need to change people’s consciousness towards animals in India. Although it’s changing it’s still really bad for the most part. I have a lot of friends in India and one of them approached me about doing a project in Calcutta, it’s called the Animal People Alliance and in three years we’ve made a lot of headway, I think we’re about to go into Rajasthan in Jaipur, and yeah it’s coming along, it’s not easy though.

HM: You’re also very active in LGBT causes. Is there any reason you started helping out the LGBT community? BC: Well, I have a gay son, first of all. Most of my friends have always been lesbian or gay, I have very few straight friends. HM: Finally Belinda, you once said you were planning to make Thailand your home. Why is that and are you still planning do so? BC: I love Thailand. I love Asia. Once you have that taste you never want anything else. So yeah.
