NOTE
O
ver January and February, in the waters off Auckland, the Prada Challenger Series took place to see who would compete against the defender to win the pinnacle of world yacht racing, the America’s Cup. Three well-funded syndicates from Italy, Britain, and the USA competed to see who would face New Zealand, the current America’s Cup holder. In March, also in New Zealand, the very emblem of speed supremacy afloat – The America’s Cup - will either be retained by New Zealand or relocate to Europe. Dig out your deck shoes, crash helmet, and turn to page 62 to learn who will be facing off for the “Auld Mug” and bragging rights from this 150-year-old international competition. There are watches, luxury watches, and ultra-luxury watches. Buying a Richard Mille watch isn’t as expensive as buying a Mercedes Benz. It is as expensive as buying a Really Nice house with a garage containing an S Class Mercedes Benz within. It is possible to buy a Richard Mille for under 100,000 USD’s, before Thailand’s luxury tax, but the vast majority of his watches are $500,0000 and above, with the Richard Mille’s RM 056 priced at over $2.2 million, again, before the luxury tax. Many celebrities and sports stars sport Richard Mille’s. One of the most recognizable is World Tennis Champion Rafael Nadal. Nadal has made international headlines for routinely wearing a Richard Mille tourbillon watch while professionally competing at international tennis matches. World audiences were shocked not only that Nadal would choose to wear a seemingly unnecessary item that could impact his performance but
also that it was a several hundred-thousand-dollar timepiece. Watch enthusiasts were additionally perplexed by the idea that the watch contained a tourbillon mechanism known for its delicate fragility. Dig out your bank book(s) and then turn to page 39 to find out what exactly is in the secret sauce that makes owning a Richard Mille so out of this world expensive. At the age of 20, Richard Hennessy, the son of an Irish Lord, departed from his ancestral home for France in 1724 to fight in the French Army of King Louis XV. After sustaining injuries in the Battle of Fontenoy in 1745, Richard settled in the Cognac region, on the Charente River banks, where he began distilling wine to produce brandy. And with that, my friend, Hennessy Cognac was born. At the end of the 18th century, Hennessy began to extend its reach across the globe, starting with the United States. At the beginning of the 19th century, the House set its sights on Australia and Southeast Asia and later conquered the South American, Japanese and Chinese markets. In 1860, a quarter of cognac exports bore the name Hennessy. Dust off your “Snifter” and turn to page 78 to read about one former Supreme Leader of North Korea who Hennessy reported spent over $700,000 a year on their Paradis cognac. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month’s issue. We hope you enjoy the read.

The gregarious Italian began his career in Thailand before further honing his skills in London, France, Switzerland, and Florence, where he achieved his first Michelin star. He began his Four Seasons tenure in Prague, highlighted by another Michelin star, followed by St. Petersburg and Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong, where, as Executive Chef, he oversaw a restaurant collection that took home an unprecedented eight Michelin stars in a single year. With his return to Thailand, Chef Accordi has come full circle – now with a world of experience under his toque. As he says, “My career really started here, so this is like coming back home for me. Only this time, I’m bringing so much with me.” In developing the food and beverage program, a dream team of experts in cuisines, room design, and hospitality innovation came together to create a collection of original dining and drinking concepts with a star-studded group of chefs, mixologists, and sommeliers in the kitchens and behind the bars. Head Chef Qiu Xiaogui and his team bring more than 109 years of experience in Cantonese cooking with them. “Cantonese cuisine is all about the details and finesse—techniques that take years to master,” says Xiaogui. “With origins in the southeast of China, particularly its coastal regions, seafood is naturally prominent while braising, the double-boiling of soups and roasting are common cooking methods. Flavours are more balanced and refined compared to the other regions of China because the goal is to preserve the food’s original taste. Less oil and dairy products are used, resulting in cleaner, more wholesome dishes.” Chef Xiaogui and his team have worked together for eight years, and they all moved to Bangkok to open Yu Ting Yuan. Award-winning Chinese Barbecue Chef Liu Guokun has more than 27 years of barbeque experience under his belt. “Chef Kun is the best barbecue chef I’ve ever worked with. His roasting talents brings the best out of each piece of meat,” says Xiaogui. With more than 25 years of experience creating innovative yet traditional dim sum, Chef Wang Yucheng is an integral part of Yu Ting Yuan. As Xiaogui notes, “Dim sum is really a handicraft. Chef Cheng has an incredible amount of patience working with each individual piece, carefully crafting his intricate design, while still retaining traditional dim sum characteristics.” Rounding out the team is Chef Li Bude with 17 years of experience on the wok, and Chopper Chef Ma Xinbin has 14 years of experience, ensuring all ingredients are at their best, chopped and paired optimally for each dish.

Here, diners can delight in their robust oyster selection, signature seafood towers, beautiful fish dishes, tartare variations, and salads. A Journey To Peace A founding pillar of Aman’s philosophy and the meaning of its name is “Peace.” This year, the Tibetan Bon Dzogchen Buddhist master and scholar, Geshe YongDong (fondly known as Geshe La) will visit six Aman locations in Europe, South-East Asia and Bhutan for a Journey to Peace. Sharing the ancient wisdom of the Bon Dzogchen tradition, Geshe La will lead participants in a series of retreats, each one focused on a different step in the pathway to enlightenment. From learning to live in the moment to discovering the art of letting go, the Geshe’s teachings shepherd guests towards achieving and maintaining a state of serenity – in heart, mind and spirit. ‘Geshe’ is the highest monastic degree in Buddhism, a level of spiritual mastery only the most focused practitioners can achieve. Under the guidance of Geshe La,
retreat guests will learn the practical skills needed to find peace in everyday life. Techniques covered include breath control to calm the mind, Tsa Lung exercises to relax the body, mindfulness practice to tune into the present moment, and meditation to promote inner peace. A master of the Bon Dzogchen tradition, Geshe La became a Buddhist monk when he was just 13 years old, taking his vows at Tibet’s largest Bon Dzogchen monastery, Nangzhig Bönpo. At the age of 24, he was awarded the Rajampa Geshe degree, the highest awarded in Tibetan monastic education. In the three decades since, his spiritual journey has taken him all over the world, from studying with the 14th Dalai Lama in Tibet to introducing and teaching the YungDrung Bon Buddhism in Canada, where he lives. Today, he is one of a very few Bon spiritual masters living in the west and qualified to offer teaching.

Living in the Moment Six nights: creating space for peace to enter The Fivefold Teaching of the eightcentury master Dawa Gyaltsen is central to the Dzogchen Buddhist tradition, a pathway to awakening achieved by simply doing nothing, learning to accept things as they are. By allowing thoughts to come and go without conscious interference, we allow the mind to naturally empty itself, creating a space for peace to enter. Coming to the island of Sveti Stefan in Montenegro in September and the spiritual kingdom of Bhutan at Amankora in November, Geshe La leads a transformative weeklong journey into Dzogchen practice, with a daily programme of meditation, chanting and group workshops, with each day devoted to a different step of the Fivefold Teaching. Including six nights’ accommodation, full board and a 90-minute Grounding massage on the day of arrival, the retreat guides participants to still unquiet minds and find solace and clarity in the present moment. As it is Six nights: Understanding how to simply let go For the Dzogchen practice, the aim is to simply sit quietly doing nothing. Guests are encouraged to leave everything ‘as it is’ without judgement. As thoughts arise, let them arise; as thoughts leave, let them go. Don’t chase them. Don’t stop them. This practice can be very easy or very difficult depending on your personality, your level of understanding, the quality of your practice, and your karmic connection to the Dzogchen view. Coming to the shores of Amanpuri in Phuket in October and the fringes of Angkor at Amansara in November, Geshe La leads a transformative weeklong journey into Dzogchen practice, with a daily programme of meditation, chanting and group workshops, with each day devoted to a different step of the Fivefold Teaching. Including six nights’ accommodation, full board and a 90-minute Grounding massage on the day of arrival, the retreat guides participants to still unquiet minds and find solace and clarity in the present moment.

Embracing Impermanence Six nights: understanding and acceptance of change The hand that clings too tightly to familiar things cannot open to grasp something new. It is only by letting go of worldly distractions that we can find true peace. This retreat introduces the concept of Bardo – the liminal state between death and rebirth that animates the Tibetan Book of the Dead – and guides participants towards understanding and acceptance of transience and change. Over the course of six days, Geshe La leads retreat participants on a journey of understanding through meditation, contemplation, breath work and mantras. Taking place at Amanoi beside Vietnam’s dramatic Vinh Hy Bay and at Amantaka in the Buddhist city of Luang Prabang, the programme is divided into two halves. The first focuses on cultivating a sense of calm in body and mind; the second explores mortality through mindfulness, teaching how to live a more fulfilled life by accepting what comes after it. here are watches, luxury watches and ultra-luxury watches. Richard Mille, born in Switzerland, started working at his first watchmaking company in 1974. After working for several companies in the industry, he decided in 1998 to start his own. He presented his business plan to his friend Dominique Guenat. Dominique was also in the watch business, and their professional relationship over the years had grown into a great friendship, fuelled in particular by a shared love of cars, aeronautics, and mechanics. After reviewing the plan, they decided to go into partnership together.

After three years of research and prototypes, the Richard Mille brand presented its first watch, the RM 001 Tourbillon at Baselworld in 2001. Baselworld is the most famous World Watch and Jewelry Show held in Basel Switzerland each year. Their RM 001 was a manually wound mechanism fitted with a ribbed tonneaushaped case that revealed the mechanism, the main features of the brand’s visual identity, and included a tourbillon calibre, a power-reserve indicator, and a torque indicator. John Simonian owns and heads the US-based company Westime, the exclusive distributor of Richard Mille watches for the entirety of the Americas. According to John, “Before I met Richard, I had already set up a multi-brand retailer, Westime, in California. He came to see me with his business partner Dominique Guenat in 2001 to show me his first baby, the RM 001 Tourbillon. I was immediately impressed by what he showed me, and we talked for hours. He told me he could allocate two watches to me that year and maybe five the next year— that’s how limited the original production was.

I will never forget that first visit when he conducted his special routine while showing me the RM 001. He started by explaining everything about the rationale of the curving case design, the reasons behind the specially made screws outside and inside, the baseplate, his entire philosophy about the watch—and then he came to the watch’s incredible shock resistance. ‘This is not your usual tourbillon that needs to be babied; I made sure it is as tough as nails and can take any beating.’ With that statement, he proceeded to lob the watch across the room, indifferent to where it might land, and it nearly gave me a heart attack. This was not only because I knew that tourbillons are sensitive to shocks in daily life; the watch salesman in me was also upset seeing a watch with a six-figure value sailing through the air over my desk towards the wall… ‘Don’t worry, go ahead and pick it up, it will still be ticking and keeping perfect time.’ What he said was true, and he would go on to perform this routine with almost every watch journalist and collector he could get hold of. Suffice to say, no-one ever forgot him—or his RM 001—even many years later.”

HOT Magazine
In 2002, Richard Mille presented the RM 002, a technological jump on the first model and the first watch in the history of watchmaking to feature a titanium baseplate. This was followed later that year by the RM 003, a dual time zone tourbillon, and by the RM 004 flyback chronograph in 2003. Richard Mille quickly learned the importance of image, exclusivity, and lifestyle. He understood that while a high-quality timepiece always has inherent value, most customers in the luxury sphere simply did not buy products because they were of high quality. A unique formula was needed to create both demand and desire in order to ensure not only that customers purchased your luxury timepieces but that they also kept coming back for more.
Richard is a big fan of motorsports, and he collects 1970s-era racing cars. His fascination with motorsports such as Formula 1 was integral to his development and growth of the Richard Mille brand. One of his first important strategic decisions was that he would produce timepieces in the same way teams produced racing cars – with total neglect of production cost and focusing on the use of modern production techniques and materials for maximum performance. True that “performance” for a car versus a watch is slightly different, but the concept was more than enough to propel Richard Mille to where it is today.
One of the main value propositions of buying a Richard Mille watch is that it grants you access to an exclusive club and that despite the price, no one offers more. Richard Mille watches start at around $80,000 USD and go up to several million dollars in price for some of their more exotic timepieces. Richard Mille releases at least a few different $1,000,00+ watches per year, and the average price of one of their tourbillon watches ranges from about $500,000–$800,000. These are enormous numbers even by luxury watch standards – so a very common question by consumers as well as others in the watch industry is “why are Richard Mille watches so expensive?”

It doesn’t matter how many people recognize that a Richard Mille watch is expensive, but rather that the right people will recognize it and know what it means. Therefore, maintaining a high price allows Richard Mille customers to authentically communicate their status in life as a function of having a certain (high) level of disposable income sufficient to drop this much money on a timepiece. Richard Mille also authentically lives the lifestyle that the brand’s products are influenced by. He travels the world to car and boat races, travels by private jet, which inspire his aviation watches, and hangs out with a long list of celebrity actors and athletes that wear his watches.
The most famous celebrity relationship Richard Mille has had is with brand ambassador Rafael Nadal. The world tennis champion made international headlines when he was spotted routinely wearing a Richard Mille tourbillon watch while professionally competing during tennis matches. World audiences were shocked not only that Nadal would choose to wear a seemingly unnecessary item that could impact his performance, but also that it was a several hundred thousand dollar timepiece. Watch enthusiasts were additionally compelled by the idea that the watch contained a tourbillon mechanism, which is known for its delicate fragility.
Confidence, playfulness, and authentic exclusivity together make up the special sauce that allows Richard Mille watches to be so expensive. The fact remains that you simply cannot get the precise Richard Mille experience in any lesser-priced product, and Richard Mille customers are comforted knowing that they aren’t likely to see someone with their same watch who isn’t equally as successful as they are.

slands in this part of the world are synonymous for relaxation, marvellous sights, beautiful coasts, and cocktails with little parasol hats. Koh Chang is one of those islands and boasts all of that. If the world’s situation is making you a little itchy, then perhaps a relaxing Koh Chang beach holiday is exactly what your doctor would order. Koh Chang is part of the province of Trat, in the east of the country, on

Thailand’s gulf. Near the Cambodian border, it is the third-largest island in Thailand after Phuket and Koh Samui. It enjoys the incredible climate that the country is so famous for, a flagrant sun and welcoming warm temperatures throughout the entire year. Heat is not much of an issue here like in urban areas such as Bangkok. Here the ocean breezes cool you regardless of where you are on the island. The rainy season is probably the only
time that discourages visitors from the beaches. Still, even at such times, the showers aren’t constant, and the activities are plentiful enough that it doesn’t matter if the sun fails to appear. Koh Chang has an interesting etymological background. “Koh” as you may well know, means “island” whilst “Chang” if you like your beer, might ring a bell too, as this is the Thai word for “elephant”. “Elephant Island” is thus what it is called, not because it

brews the local Thai lager, but because of its shape, which if you bear notice, resembles the head and the trunk of an elephant. Koh Chang’s history is quite impressive, as the island was largely undiscovered, right up until the Second World War. Before that time, few families lived on the island and subsisted by growing and harvesting coconuts and other assortments of fruits. During World War Two, Koh Chang came into
the limelight. Far from the most flattering of reasons for fame, it was the frontline for the Battle of Koh Chang, in which the Siamese Navy faced off against the colonial French, in an alliance that comprised of Vichy France and French Indochina. The battle resolved positively in favour of the French, who defeated Luang Phrom Viraphan’s men, the commander of the navy back then. Two ships were sunk at the time, with one severely dam-
aged. A month into the battle, the belligerents agreed on a peace agreement which ended the confrontation. There was something positive from the battle, however. With the island completely devastated, the government focused on the renewed development projects there, which have culminated in making it one of the most beautiful territories of modern-day Thailand.

Seventy percent of Koh Chang is rainforest inhabited by the Stump Tailed Macaque, the Small Asian Mongoose and the Small India Civet, which all coexist within the lush greenery. The island also possesses remarkable coral reefs and waterfalls, making it a tourist haven. Additionally, sixty-one avian species have been recorded to date, an impressive figure, considering the relatively small landmass. Various types of snake and deer are also present, creating a truly heterogeneous environment in the forest.

Koh Chang tourism didn’t kick off until the middle of the nineteen seventies, during which time there were only a few backpackers who dared explore this mostly local island. At that time, the island was not really set up to receive the visitors that made their way via local fishing boats, staying in the handful of small guesthouses that could be found. Those days, however, are long gone. Without question, the primary attraction is the Mu Ko Chang National Park, which is a protected area and eighty-

five percent of the island. There are many coral reefs and waterfalls within Mu Ko Chang. The Klong Plu Waterfall is the most popular. However, there are also waterfalls on the island’s eastern side, such as Klong Nongsi, Klong Nuang, Khiri Petch, and the Thanmayom. The village of Ban Salak Phet has a temple called Wat Salak Phet built during King Rama V’s reign and visited by the late monarch, which can be seen when visiting the Wat’s museum. The busiest of the island’s beaches is Hat Sai Kao. Hat Sai Kao translates to “White Sand Beach,” and it most certainly is. However, the truth is that most of Koh Chang’s beaches are white and sandy so that Klong Kloi can be a better choice as it’s much less visited. For nightlife, the ironically named Lonely Beach is the place to go, as affordable restaurants, accommodation, and other amenities are available in the vicinities, not to mention the nightly parties that happen regularly. Getting to Koh Chang is relatively easy. While the only means of access to the place is by boat, it is affordable and comfortable to travel there. Additionally, if one wishes to go there from provinces afar, Trat has an airport merely fifteen minutes away from the ferry terminal. Koh Chang is a fantastic island to visit. It’s not noisy or overly crowded like other Thai islands, but it is developed enough to ensure a pleasant stay. It is one of those destinations where you wish you had planned to stay longer. If you haven’t been there yet, it is very much worth the trip.

This spectacular regatta will climax in March this year. sports enthusiasts can readily catch the action on www.americascup.com/ how-to-watch. An essential step to winning the America’s Cup is to first win the Prada Cup. This is awarded the fastest yacht, beating off all others in a Challenger Series. The 36th challenge for the 150-year-old international contest took place on Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf, that pitted three teams, each racing revolutionary new designs of foiling, single-hull craft, which fly above the water at speeds up to 100km per hour,
powered solely by wing-sails. Three well-funded syndicates challenged the holders; one each from Italy, from Britain and from the USA. The Challenger Series began in January 2021, with match-races between each of the challengers to determine ranking. Italy’s Luna Rossa bested America’s Patriot in the semi-final, (the latter scrambling over 11 days, to repair structural damage suffered from an uncontrolled crash, holing and near sinking. Alas salt-water insurmountably compromised its electronics).

For Italy’s Team Prada Pirelli, a short celebration and the Challenger Series trophy in their cabinet. Now it is on to the Big One. Five out of the last nine winners of the Challenger Series have gone on to victory over the Defenders, earning the coveted America’s Cup. The Defender this time is Emirates Team New Zealand, racing Te Rehutai. Emirates Team NZ has held the America’s Cup since June 2017, when it beat Oracle Team USA in a thrilling upset victory (7:1 matches) racing 50-foot, foiling catamarans on the Great Sound in Bermuda.

“The Fastest Racing Monohulls on the Planet” – Class of the 36th America’s Cup Forget any ideas of conventional yacht racing, lead keels, Kevlar sails, spinnakers, or even multi-hulls. These innovative behemoths are like no ‘boats’ ever seen before, joining aerospace technology to naval architecture. ‘Sailing’ at up to three-times the wind speed, these boats literally fly – about a metre above the water and reach speeds of 100km/hour. This totally new class of boat, designated ‘AC75s’, are technically described as ‘canting foil monohulls’. The AC75 Class craft are 22.7m (75 feet) long, have a mast height of 26m (85 feet), are constructed of carbon-fibre and weigh just 6.5 tonnes. (Challengers’ boats were air-freighted to NZ). The single hull rises from the water like a hydrofoil, riding on one or both of canting arms protruding one from each side, and stabilised, [most times, anyway], by a small foil on the bottom of the rudder. Working parts - the mast, rigging, cant arms and their hydraulics are identical between boats. Parts below water, hull shape, crew positions and double-skinned wingsails are proprietary to Teams. Both Te Rehutai (in practice: www. youtube.com/watch?v=SODQVrcR3KU), and Patriot (in competition) have capsized.

This new position carries responsibility for keeping the boat in level flight throughout the race, including through all turns, as well as on upwind and downwind legs. ‘Grinders’ work manual pumps to powerup hydraulics, which shape the wingsail, power winches, raise or lower the foil arms, and adjust trimtabs on the foils to maintain flight. For a racing yacht to ‘fall off’ it foils, thereby floating like a conventional boat, is akin to a Formula One car developing a puncture; it almost certainly surrenders the race.

ounded in 1988, Aman Resorts’ first destination, Amanpuri, resulted from Adrian Zecha’s desire to build a holiday home in Phuket. His plans soon developed into an idea to build a small boutique resort with Anil Thadani and two other friends. They invested their own money in the venture as no banks would lend for the project due to the small number of planned rooms. Claiming an entire peninsula and one of Phuket’s finest white sand beaches, Amanpuri offers the ideal natural setting for an immersive retreat holiday. Overlooking the turquoise waters of Phuket’s spectacular west coast, this sleek resort provides guests their own secluded beach. The resort’s architecture is inspired by the graceful lines of Thailand’s ancient capital, Ayutthaya. An elegant reflection of its name, Amanpuri, is drawn from the Sanskrit-derived words for ‘peace,’ aman, and ‘place,’ puri. Truly tranquil, the resort’s 40 pavilions and 40 villas are surrounded by lush gardens and coconut palms, offering a private island’s peace and privacy with world-class restaurants and a medical-grade Holistic Wellness Centre. Amanpuri’s one and two-bedroom Pavilions are elegant and contemporary with oversized bathrooms and spacious dressing areas. A choice of ocean or garden views, many have private swimming pools, and all pavilions and private villas have dining salas where you can enjoy your own intimate dining experience from the Amanpuri restaurants, served by a dedicated butler. Private villas range in size from three to nine bedrooms that sleep up to nineteen. All villas have ocean views and private pools. Selected villas also feature media rooms, gyms, massage rooms, steam rooms, live-in housekeepers, and personal chefs. The resort’s restaurant offerings include Arva and Buabok. Arva, meaning ‘cultivated,’ is Amanpuri’s tribute to Italy’s earthy, heart-warming dishes, offering a menu that follows the country’s tradition of ‘cucina del raccolto.’ The Catch of the Day, freerange chicken, and a cornucopia of market fruits and vegetables are paired with skill by their executive chef to create a friendly, seasonal and sustainable menu that showcases Italian classics in their purest form.

Hennessy Turns 256
A
t the age of 20, Richard Hennessy, the son of an Irish Lord, departed from his ancestral home for France in 1724 to fight in the French Army of King Louis XV. He sustained injuries in the Battle of Fontenoy in 1745, in which the French were victorious. Richard then settled in the Cognac region, on the Charente River banks, where he began distilling wine to produce brandy. And with that, Hennessy Cognac was born. At the end of the 18th century, Hennessy began to extend its reach across the globe, starting with the United States. At the beginning of the 19th century, the House set its sights on Australia and Southeast Asia and later conquered the South American, Japanese, and Chinese markets. In 1860, a quarter of cognac exports bore the Hennessy name. In the 20th century, the work begun by the House’s founder was continued. A million cases were shipped in 1967, and the figure had doubled to two million just

20 years later. Well over eight million cases were sold in 2020 making Hennessy the world’s leading premium spirits brand. In addition to the fabulous commercial success of a brand available on every continent and in over 160 countries, Hennessy cognac is an ambassador for French art de vivre the world over and celebrated its 255th anniversary in 2020. From vine to bottle, cognac is the epilogue of a three-part story – selection, aging, and finally blending, that takes place in Cognac and nowhere else. To ensure the excellence and variety of its aromas, Hennessy exclusively selects the best grapes from the four grand cru regions of the AOC (Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies and Fins Bois). After the grapes are pressed, yeast is added which converts the sugar to alcohol, resulting in around 7 or 8%. It’s then left to ferment for 2 to 3 weeks. Two distillations are what makes Co-

gnac what it is. Without the mandatory second distillation, you’d merely be drinking a rather potent white wine. The second distillation transforms the concoction into an ‘eau-de-vie’ (water of life), a transparent liquid of around 70% alcohol. Hennessy possesses the largest reserves of cognac eaux-de-vies globally, with over 470,000 casks resting in its cellars. The Cognac is casked in oak barrels, with the wood being sourced from the forests of Limousin or Troncais. This type of wood is perfect for ageing Cognac due to its dependably low resin content. The process is meticulous as the oak itself alters the final taste of the Cognac, offsetting the sweeter, fruitier notes with a dry nuttiness, resulting in a well-rounded flavour profile. Lastly comes the art of blending. At Hennessy, this art has developed over time and defines the House’s identity and vision. For over two centuries, eight generations of master blenders from the Fillioux family have devoted their lives to creating exceptional cognacs, enriching the House’s heritage, and passing it on to their descendants. A member of the Fillioux family still chairs the tasting committee. During the 1970s, Kilian Hennessy, a fifthgeneration direct descendant of Hennessy, became the CEO of Hennessy, succeeding his first cousin Maurice-Richard. Kilian Hennessy spearheaded the company’s 1971 merger with Moët et Chandon, which created Moët Hennessy.

Moët Hennessy merged with Louis Vuitton in 1987, creating one of the world’s largest luxury brand conglomerates, Louis Vuitton • Moët-Hennessy or LVMH. In 1988, a management crisis led to the group’s takeover by Bernard Arnault, owner of the haute couture house Christian Dior, with the support of Guinness. Kilian Hennessy remained on the company’s advisory board until his death in 2010 at the age of 103. Today, 60 million bottles of Hennessy’s 13 different blends are sold in 160 countries around the world each year, supplying 49% of the world’s cognac. No doubt Richard Hennessy would be proud. Interestingly, a big fan of Hennessy was Kim Jong-il, the former Supreme Leader of North Korea. Hennessy once reported that Kim spent over $700,000 a year on their Paradis cognac. For the 150th Anniversary of Hennessy’s X.O., the company commissioned visionary and world-renowned architect Frank Gehry to design a Masterpiece bottle.

Gehry, a legend of our modern era has designed such iconic buildings as the Guggenheim in Bilbao, MoPOP in Seattle, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in L.A., & the Olympic Fish Pavillion in Barcelona. When the Pritzker Prize-winning architect traveled to Cognac to get a visual history of the Maison and the bottles that came before, he gained a new perspective and appreciation for the centuries of hands-on personal involvement. “I know great wineries, and this is another level,” said Gehry about the precise art of distillation
and selection. “It’s not hocus pocus. It is very beautiful. It’s like a very solid commitment to do something special.” This hands-on personal approach, emotional commitment, and storied history led Gehry on a journey to honor the past while celebrating Hennessy’s innovation and commitment to the future. For the X.O decanter’s design, Gehry drew inspiration from the Charente River that runs through the Hennessy Maison, along with the chalky soil that nourishes the vines to thrive.
It was essential to the architect for every detail to be handmade in order to personify the handcrafted quality of Hennessy X.O. He and his team carefully developed the cast metal mold to form the 24-carat gold-dipped bronze cover. Along with manipulating the decanter design, Gehry added a striking fractured-glass glorifier, used to showcase the vessel, and a brass and gold fusil, to reflect the cellar master’s ritual of extracting a small portion of the cognac to taste.

To Gehry, the real masterpiece is the X.O (extra old) liquid ‘gold’ inside the first blended bottle 150 years ago. “I wanted to bring it [the cognac] to life, and so I took inspiration from its birthplace and used the crumpling effect of the material that gives it a feeling of movement,” he said. “The materials I’ve chosen catch the light and make this a really beautiful object on its own, but then you realize it is a bottle of Hennessy X.O.” Yet the artistry does not stop there. In true Gehry fashion, the packaging for this $17,000 bottle of cognac pays homage to the work he did with corrugated cardboard furniture in the 1970s. This case creates a 3D effect that truly elevates the entire design to the next level. To further celebrate the X.O. 150 year milestone, Hennessy presented “A World Odyssey,” a spectacular event hosted in Cognac along the Charente River. Cai Gui-Qiang composed a colorful fireworks display titled ‘The Birth of Tragedy,’ where he honored the human spirit that embraces and rejoices in life’s harmony with nature, while simultaneously acknowledging the pain life can impart. In the demonstration, 20,000 fireworks were launched from 150 floating oak barrels to carry a message of resilience and optimism. The Hennessy X.O Frank Gehry Masterpiece was unveiled at this event on September 25, 2020, in France.
