As one of the most evocative brands in the automotive world today, Bugatti celebrated its hundred and tenth anniversary after being founded in 1909 by Ettore Bugatti. Its history is tumultuous and checkered with false starts, financial trouble and the intervention of two world wars but as long as the company’s history is, Bugatti has lost none of its association with power, luxury and excess. As we were going to press, Bugatti announced their newest car, the La Voiture Noire which costs $12.5 million USD’s before taxes, making it the most expensive new car ever sold and only one will ever be made. Put on your driving gloves and strap in to page 62 to see where you can put your excess millions to good use.

For hundreds of years whisky has been distilled in Scotland with the earliest documented record dating back to 1494. While whisky is made only in Scotland, it is enjoyed all around the world to the point that many countries treasure this beverage even higher than their own national drink. France, for example drinks more Scotch than Cognac. Is there a difference between Scotch and Scotch whisky? No. But there is a difference in whisky and whiskey—the spelling, for one. Scotch itself has a long history. In 1494 it was made in monasteries for medicinal purposes usually prescribed to relieve colic, palsy and even smallpox. Joy Ayling Opens New Restaurant, The Prestige Mali Prestige by Orchard Palm Homes now was its own Thai/Chinese restaurant, following an official opening on March 1st. Just called ‘The Prestige’ it will offer traditional Thai and classic Chinese dishes from a comprehensive menu. Owner Joy Ayling has hired a chef from the prestigious Dusit Thani Bangkok to oversee kitchen operations. If the food lovingly laid out for the grand opening is anything to go by then, this writer’s taste buds were happily tantalised. Steamed dumplings of several varieties, cabbage wrapped morsels, chicken satays, Larb Gong (prawns). Chinese spoons filled with mouth sized pieces of perfectly cooked, prawns, Tofu, and vegetables also tempted. The lemon chicken when it arrived was descended on very quickly, and thankfully, a new platter promptly came to replace the first. A ceremonial garland cutting brought the new restaurant to a formal opening. Residents at Mali Prestige and the neighbouring Mali Signature housing developments will not have to travel into town for a quick meal thanks to the arrival of this new restaurant venture. Owner Joy explains that the restaurant will operate 7 days a week opening for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant can be contacted at 098 159 2789.

Chef Takahashi witnessed his mentor lead the restaurant to three Michelin stars for six consecutive years, never once dropping its esteemed status. When Kashiwaya opened its first international outlet in Hong Kong in 2015, much effort was taken to stay as true to the original restaurant as possible. In 2016, Kashiwaya Hong Kong received not one, but two Michelin stars. ould Italian cuisine be the most popular worldwide? That’s something this writer has often pondered. Certainly wherever I’ve travelled there is always an Italian restaurant or Pizzeria, and even here in coastal Hua Hin Thailand, there is a fair share of Italian eateries from simple to high end. Once such establishment that has stood the test of time is La

Grappa in Hua Hin’s ‘old town’ serving fine Italian cuisine in Hua Hin since 2003. On a recent visit, we had the pleasure of meeting Chef Patron Luigi Sica. A native of Como in Italy’s northern region of Lombardy, Chef Luigi has been in charge of the La Grappa’s menu and kitchen for the last four years. Passion for his food was undoubtedly evident as

we chatted. In fact, Luigi proudly announced that he had some fantastic white and black truffle from this year’s season and would be highlighting the truffle on several dishes we had chosen to try. Such an exotic introduction to La Grappa and Chef Luigi’s cuisine. Our food journey began with three starters. First a classic selection of fine Italian cold cuts – melt in your

HOT MAGAZINE RECOMMEND mouth Prosciutto San Daniele, Coppa di Parma, Mortadella, Salami Milano, and Speck Alto Adige (lightly smoked and air cured Italian ham) all served with a small selection of pickled vegetables. Next was Beef Carpaccio – sliced wafer thin and serves on a bed of fresh rocket leaves and topped with a whole Burrata cheese – creamy as we liked and topped with shavings of truffle.

Our third starter was a citrus marinated Salmon Tartare. Accompanying the salmon was a passionfruit sauce and wasabi. On an intellectual level an unusual pairing, yet the sweet and slight sharp of the passionfruit, the gentle heat of the wasabi and the finely diced salmon with citrus overtones were a perfect trinity of flavours and ultimately, our favourite starter!

To sample the restaurant's pasta dishes we chose a Linguini Pasta with Hua Hin Slipper Lobster, cherry tomatoes and basil – perfectly cooked medallions of lobster in the deliciously rich tomato sauce. Our other choice was the Homemade Veal Ravioli sitting on a parmesan cheese fondue and topped with a white truffle foam. What an abundance of striking flavour all in one dish!

For mains we chose the Imported Pike Perch – perfectly pan-fried, sitting atop a violet potato puree and accompanied by a white wine sauce. Aged Australian Angus Beef served Rossini style was our other main. Beef tenderloin topped with a generous slice of grilled Foie Gras, thin slithers of black truffle all with a Madera sauce. Melt in your mouth beef accompanied with rich, meaty goodness in the sauce and foie gras – heavenly for this writer! La Grappa’s wine menu is a tour of Italy in itself and one of the most comprehensive this writers seen for some time. Hand selected wines from all the major Italian regions from the north all the way to Sicily in the south. Start with Prosecco, then perhaps a Pinot Grigio, and onto the reds the choice is outstanding. Don’t forget the Grappa! A visit to an Italian restaurant cannot pass without ‘Dolci’ – desserts and Chef Luigi excelled once again. The Classic Tiramisu – coffee, liqueur-infused biscuits, mascarpone, cream and cocoa – everything you could want from this classic dessert. A Bavarian Mango Mouse with a passionfruit sauce and Amaretto crumb. Or our final selection, a Panna Cotta with a strawberry sauce. That perfect ‘wobble’ of the Panna Cotta, not too sweet with the strawberry sauce as a perfect counterbalance. This was definitely our favourite dessert! More in the mood for something simpler like a Pizza – no problems as La Grappa’s wood-fired oven is on and ready to go. The menu provides ten choices starting with the classic Margherita or perhaps the La Grappa special with tomato sauce, mozzarella, Nduja, Italian sausage and black truffle.

L et’s Meet,

Eugenio Gili What is your full name and age? My name is Eugenio Gili, I'm also known as ' Gino' by my friends. I was told 10 years ago that I have already reached a maturity level and have become a senior ever since.

What is your current job position? I am the CEO of my company Chatsford which is based in Hong Kong. For the past 45 years we have been providing In-Flight Cabin Products to the world’s airlines.

How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? I was fortunate to discover Hua Hin in the year 2014. From the very first time I was able to travel and visit Hua Hin, I can simply say that it was love at first sight and I wasted no time in establishing my residence in Khao Takiab.

What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? I have visited many of the traditional and well known cities in Thailand with the exception of Hua Hin. Particularly due to the fact that the only access was a 3-4 hour journey by road. That's why my knowledge of Hua Hin was rather limited.

What do you like most about your profession? My profession is very specialized and thanks to that, it has given me the opportunity to play a role and become involved in the exclusive group within the aviation industry. Working with international airlines has allowed me to travel extensively around the world.

What do you like least about your profession? Since airlines are flying 24/7, there is no room for product delays or failures.

What do you like most about Hua Hin? Hua Hin reminds me of the period when I was first settling down in Hong Kong 45 years ago. Due to the

28

HOT Magazine

progress and development, Hong Kong became a prominent city and a major destination. Hua Hin's ongoing development is also very much in line with a similar vision.

What is your favourite restaurant and why? Sunday brunch at McFarland House gives me the opportunity to relax and enjoy. In addition to the culinary experience, the ambiance plus the live music performed by Maria's group from the Philippines, provides additional relaxation along with the soft waves of the sea.

What do you like to do in your free time and why? First thing in the morning, I walk down from my place to the beach, whenever the tide allows to enjoy a nice beach walk for one hour, until it is time for breakfast on my open air terrace, al fresco enjoying the beautiful beach view of the Gulf of Thailand from my condo.

What would you recommend to the new comers to do in Hua Hin and why? Hua Hin is gradually becoming a new destination for many visitors from multinational origins. Hua Hin has a great variety of options for families and children in general. There are many well-established restaurants offering a diverse selection to suit your culinary appetite. For families, there are different activities such as waters parks, safari's, waterfalls and monumental temples. On the beach resorts, the sea of the Gulf of Thailand is the most desirable, one of the highlights being kitesurfing. In addition to the malls, there is a place called Cicada market which functions in the evening on weekends. No matter where you shop, these popular spots offer a chance for visitors to enjoy and relax. On the health side, Spa’s are also a highlight to be found throughout Hua Hin.

Tell us a surprising fact that the public does not know about you? Two facts. First, I was an honorary Consul to Chile for many years when I was living in Hong Kong and second, I am not a chef, but I was able to switch from my photography hobby to the kitchen. When I am travelling, after checking in to my hotel, my first stop will always be visiting fresh markets and buying endless varieties of spices and ingredients which I fully utilize whenever my family and friends gather at my home.

What is the most outlandish thing you have even done? Probably leaving my home at 17 and going to sea. For 10 years I was a merchant seaman, graduating to officer, visiting ports all over the world. I ended up in Asia which is where I have been for the last 50 years. Asia as a whole has given me the opportunity to enjoy my life throughout, built up my business, travel and now a days settle down in Thailand which is no doubt, among one of the most beautiful countries in the world. The Asian culture has been one of the most astonishing discoveries during my whole life. The Beauty of Hua Hin

I

n many ways, Hua Hin is a just hop, skip and jump away from Bangkok. A quiet little beach resort town, it is just 2.5 to 3 hours away from Bangkok by auto. Hua Hin has long been favored by the royal family since Prince Chakrabhongse first visited on a hunting trip. King Rama VII built a summer palace and named it Klaikangwon,“far from worries”. As Thailand’s first seaside holiday destination, wealthy Bangkok residents built their holiday homes there and Hua Hin flourished. Now, Hua Hin is a great destination for a getaway, with long white sandy beaches, safe swimming and plenty of fun activities. Tranquil yet vibrant, Hua Hin offers breathtaking events and activites, lively night markets and a dreamy vineyard that proves relaxing doesn’t have to be boring! Even going to the local malls is a treat. Opened in 2006, Market Village Hua Hin was the first major shopping complex in the city. Other than Tesco Lotus, Home Pro and Major Cineplex,

36

HOT Magazine

Market Village also has a food court, restaurants and plenty of shops with popular clothing brands. Your little ones can amuse themselves in the play area upstairs or even learn karate or dance at the local classes held there every afternoon. Several themed events take place every week or so, from animal farms to Chinese New Year and even beauty pageants and fashion shows. Or a few minutes away is the BluPort Hua Hin Resort Mall. The largest and most impressive shopping mall in Hua Hin, the 5 Billion Baht Mall is a partnership between Proud Real Estate, (InterContinental, Holiday Inn, Vana Nava Water Jungle, True Arena, Le Colonial Beach Club) & The Mall Group, Thailand’s most impressive luxury shopping mall developer. BluPort boasts a line-up of over 1000 names in fashion, beauty, lifestyle, IT as well as entertainment for both family, friends and children. With outlets like H&M, UNIQLO, Coffee Club and the infamous Whaley Port for kids, the mall is the new iconic anchor of Hua Hin offering not only shopping but dozens of restaurants

to choose from as well as great theaters. It is open every day from 10 am to 10 pm. For those who don’t want to be inside, wander over to Cicada Market near Khao Takiab beach. This upmarket night market comes alive to celebrate the arts— it is a forum for local artists to exhibit and sell their work, with a weekend schedule of live entertainment. Visitors can pick up handicrafts, paintings, drawings, vintage bric-a-brac and specialty artisan items and accessories by local designers. At Cicada you’ll find items for sale that aren’t available at typical Thailand Night Markets. Set in tropical gardens, the ambiance is relaxed, stylish and bohemian, with paths illuminated by lanterns and fairy lights and art installations throughout. Two indoor galleries – The Art Factory – display the works of local artists and university students, plus a rotation of touring national and international exhibitions. Food vendors offer the full range of Thai street foods, from the local specialty of khao khluk kapi – fried rice with shrimp paste – to Pad Thai to Isaan (North

Eastern) dishes. There’s also a selection of international foods, including Italian, Japanese, Korean barbecue and Chinese. Grilled fresh seafood here is also a specialty. Cicada Market is open Friday to Sunday evenings. Right next to Cicada is the Tamarind night market, a treasure trove of eateries for those with hungry stomachs. Tamarind has become extremely popular for tourists and locals alike and is open Thursday thru Sunday evenings. Just a few minutes further from Cicada and Tamarind is the village of Khao Takiab which has become a desirable destination in its own right. This quiet village, about 7 km away from Hua Hin, has a great beach with plenty of beach restaurants and beach bars. You’ll also find lots of shops and interesting places to visit along with high end hotels and condominium developments.. Also, in Khao Takiab is Wat Khao Lad which sits on top of a hill / mountain. Because of all the monkeys that reside in or near the temple the Wat has picked up the nickname monkey temple and the mountain monkey mountain. A 20 meters statue of Buddha stands at the base of the hill. There are several ways to reach the temple. One way is to simply climb the stairs. Visitors may pause during their climb and enjoy the view, on a very clear day, you can see as a far as Cha-Am , the next city to the north.

If you are a golfer, well then you have found Nirvana. Hua Hin boasts 10 great golf courses with some of the best being Black Mountain and Banyan. In 2012 and each year since Black Mountain has been selected as one of the 100 best golf courses outside the USA by Golf Digest magazine. Since 2009 the Banyan Golf Club has consistently claimed 'Top 3 in Asia' awards and has been featured in the 'Rolex Top 1000' in the World. Other things to see and do in Hua Hin include a visit to the Hua Hin Railway Station near the city center. The historic station opened in 1911 and still retains its colonial charm. It is considered the most picturesque railway station in the country. When trains are not roaring through, you’ll find many tourists taking selfies on the tracks and outside the old Royal Waiting Room, a grand looking building that was used to welcome the King and his court when they visited. While in Hua Hin don’t miss out on the Vana Nava Water Jungle—one of the largest water parks in Thailand; it also boasts some of the country’s largest and longest water slides. As well as the thrills, there are water play areas for little ones and a unique ‘Aquacourse’, a course of ropes and challenging obstacles, combined with water guns. Together with other interactive facilities the Vana Nava Water Jungle promises to deliver a splashtastic fun to thrill and chill seekers of all ages.

Next door to the Vana Nava Water Jungle you’ll find the Holiday Inn Resort Vana Nava Hua Hin. The highest building in Hua Hin, their sky bar, called Vana Nava Sky, is the best place in Hua Hin to view a sunset while enjoying custom cocktails created specifically for Vana Nava Sky by the famous mixologist J. Borosky. For those not shy of heights, wander out onto Vana Nava Sky’s see thru deck for a view of the hotel and water park below. With other attractions including Black Mountain’s water park, Santorini Water Park, Swiss Sheep Farm, Pala U Waterfall, the Maruekhathaiyawan Palace (the King’s Summer Palace), Art Village, Plearnwan, Rajabhakti Park and the aforementioned Monsoon Valley Vineyard, there is honestly no shortage of activities to do in Hua Hin even if it is just strolling through the streets. The locals are friendly, the food is superb, and the sights are worth seeing. Hua Hin offers plenty of transportation options including Grab, but if you would like to sightsee further afield it’s a good idea to rent your own vehicle or better yet, rent a vehicle with driver. The area of Khao Tao offers a small cove about 20 kilometers South of Hua Hin. Named for the hill that overlooks the beach, the beach is outlined with rocks on either side. The beach is uniquely secluded and tranquil and one of the best beaches for swimming. Here you will find an excellent beach club called Sanae Beach Club. At the top of the hill, in the dense forest, visitors will find an impressive Buddha statue. Additionally, there is a small hut that offers massages. Or, go further to Sam Roi Yot National Park, about a further forty minutes, and hike up to the Phraya Nakhon Cave. This magical attraction is an incredible sight to behold. Inside an elusive cave you will find an intricately designed gold and green pavilion. When the conditions are just right, you’re able to witness streams of light shining down on the pavilion through the open ceiling. The royal pavilion is truly a hidden treasure and the tough hike to get there is well worth it for the view alone. The National Park is 98-square kilometers with many other attractions as well, thanks to its limestone cliffs, mangrove forest, pristine beaches, dark caves, and abundant wildlife. There is also a 1-km wooden boardwalk over the marsh area that offers an amazing view.

Hua Hin is a relaxing place to be, far from its counterparts in the south, like Ko Samui or Ko Phangan or Pattaya across the gulf. You can get there by bus, train, taxi or private jet via Jaras Aviation or MJETS. From Suvarnabhumi airport, a private bus or shuttle bus can be arranged although you can go to the bus stations around the city as well—there’s one leaving every hour from 7 am till 6 pm. You can also take the train from Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong although that might take more time, 5-6 hours in comparison to the bus’s 3 hour journey. Generally, November to February is the best months to visit due to the cooler temperature. However, the cool sea breeze offers a pleasant atmosphere on even the hottest of days. It is to be noted that March to May is extremely hot while the rainy season stretches between June and October. The locals take immense pride in their heritage and the town can offer the discerning visitor a real glimpse back into Thailland’s history with its old colonial buildings, fishing heritage and quaint timeless streets. In spite of its popularity as a thriving resort town, Hua Hin has not lost its charm as a fishing village and it is reflected in the simple and tasteful atmosphere found there.

T

he third largest island in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Samui is undoubtedly one of the most popular and beautiful places in Thailand. Also known as the Oriental Pearl of Phuket, the island hosts a great number of splendid natural and manmade attractions. There is nothing to stop party-goers or nature lovers, families or friends from having a blast on the island. Believe it or not, Ko Samui was once little more than an extended coconut plantation. In the late 1800s, it became a fishing village, a safe haven for Chinese and Malay sea traders as they travelled across the gulf. It is rumored that the word “ samui ” came from the Chinese word “ saboey ”, which translates to “safe haven”. King Rama V, His Majesty King Chulalongkorn, visited Samui in 1887. It was then that the island was included on the map of the kingdom. Samui is now one of the leading holiday destinations for global travellers with world class accommodation, restaurants, nightlife and shopping to suit almost every taste and budget. The easiest and fastest way to Koh Samui from Bangkok is to fly Bangkok Airlines, Thai Airways also flies daily from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Samui Airport. In addition, there are direct flights from Chiang Mai, Pattaya,

Phuket, Krabi, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore. The Kho Samui airport is a beautiful open-air terminal that makes for a great first impression. Another option is flying to Surat Thani first before taking the ferry across to Koh Samui. It’s three hours longer than flying directly, but cheaper. If you want to choose the second option but don’t want to fly, get on the overnight train from Hua Lamphong station in Bangkok to Surat Thani. The bus is the cheapest option considering you don’t need a reservation. Just show up at the Sai Tai Mai terminal in Bangkok and you’ll be on your way within the hour. The bus will drop you off directly at the ferry terminal. From there it’s only an hour and a half ride to the island. Here are some experiences you shouldn’t miss; Ang Thong National Marine Park is one of the largest national parks in Thailand. Ang Thong means ‘Golden Bowl’ in Thai. It was designated as a national park in 1980, and its ecosystems have been well protected since then. It is a beautiful archipelago of 42 islands located to the west of Koh Samui in the Gulf of Thailand. Here, you will be able to admire the beautiful natural scenery of the thick jungles, towering limestone mountains, whitesand beaches, and lagoons.

A Big Buddha Statue is located on a small island connected to Samui by a causeway, the temple features a golden, 12 meters high, sitting Buddha. The beach nearby was originally called Bang Rak, but due to the prominence of the temple at its eastern end but it is now more commonly known as Big Buddha Beach. The temple is open to visitors all day, but for those hoping to catch a true cultural experience it’s best to go in the early morning hours. That’s when local people bring their food and other offerings to the temple, and the monks do their morning chanting. Bo Phut’s Fisherman’s Village was once a thriving fishing community, the fishermen have long moved on but the village retains a rustic charm. Fisherman’s Village Samui is a historical part of Bophut, with rustic-style buildings housing boutique stores, trendy restaurants and a small selection of hotels lining the narrow Beach Road. Every Friday, the entire area becomes the site of the Fisherman’s Village Walking Street market, attracting huge numbers of shoppers from across the island for the amazing variety of wares and the lively atmosphere. Beaches Koh Samui has no shortage of spectacular white sand beaches and emerald waters. Each beach town in Koh Samui has a different flair and personality with the popular party hubs being Chaweng and Lamai. Hin-Ta and Hin-Yai also known as Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks, this is probably one of the most photographed tourist attraction in Koh Samui. The reason for such popularity has to do with their genitalia shape, representing a male and a female respectively. Legend has it that Ta and Yai died on the sea when trying to sail to a neighboring province to ask for the hand of a girl for their son. Unable to reach their destination, they turned into rocks as proof of their true intentions to the would-be bride’s family. It is still worth a visit for the amazing view over the sea and Lamai beach. Na Muang Waterfall is hidden in the center of the island, Na Muang is the tallest and most beautiful waterfall in Koh Samui. It is especially impressive in the rainy season, when the water flow is at its maximum. But it’s still worth visiting during the dry season. On your way up to Na Muang Waterfall pay attention to the spirit houses and spirit trees along the way. Thai people believe spirits live inside old trees, so they tie colorful ribbons around them to warn others not to cut them down. People leave offerings, like drinks and flowers, to keep the spirits happy. Besides relaxing by the waterfalls, you can also drive ATV in the jungle or zipline through the mountain.

Secret Buddha Garden are a creation of an old Samui fruit farmer, Nim Thongsuk, who in 1976 began erecting several statues and temples around his family's verdant land. The statues depict a number of animals, deities and humans in various poses, including one of Khun Nim himself, in a relaxed position sitting on a rock. Each statue has a story to tell, and most Thais will know the meaning and mythology behind these evocative works of art. Also known as Heaven’s Garden, the surrounding areas are cool and peaceful, with a waterfall and stream flowing through, all shaded by thick jungle foliage. The Secret Buddha Gardens are found in Samui's interior, to the north-west of Lamai Beach. Want to go island hopping? To the north are Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Koh Nang Yuan. To the south are Koh Taen, Koh Mat Sum and Koh Rap. Koh Phangan is known for its epic Full Moon Parties. Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan are close to each other, and they are both known as the best snorkeling spots near Koh Samui. There you can actually dive with a whale shark. The waters are crystal clear, the corals and the diverse marine life are just mesmerizing. It can get quite busy with tourists who come to see the spectacular environment, but it’s still worth checking out. Take a day trip there and if you’re feeling adventurous, hire a jet ski and ride on over to the islands yourself Unlike other places, Koh Samui doesn’t have many public means of transports. You can choose songthaew or taxi to get to the destinations on the main island. Songthaews are usually very cheap, about 20 baht. Cars are available for rent. Prices can range from 800 to 1500 baht. However, the traffic in Koh Samui is quite complex, so if you are not confident in your driving, you should not try. The only way to get to other islands, and some beaches that don’t have any connecting roads, is by boat. Longtail boats, motorboats or canoes are always available at the pier to take you to explore the islands in the area. Ko Samui has two distinct seasons; rainy season and dry season (sunny season). The average yearly temperature is about 30 degrees. It can get quite hot. The summer in Thailand starts in late February and lasts until May. And the beaches of Koh Samui can get very crowded. October and November are often raining, making it unfit for swimming. At first glance, Ko Samui seems your average party district. That is until you look closer and explore the true exotic beauty of the island. Whether you choose to hop around the island or stay in, don’t miss the spectacular sunsets. What a way to cap off your day!

Scotch, The World's Leading Spirit

F

or hundreds of years, whisky has been distilled in Scotland with the earliest documented record dating as long ago as 1494.

56

HOT Magazine

Scotch whisky is malted barley twice distilled and aged in oak barrels for at least 3 years, although in Scotland it is allowed to age for 8-20 years. Scotch made in Scotland, Canada and England is called Scotch whisky (no e) while that made in Ireland and the US is Scotch Whiskey. To be clear, all Scotch is whisky but not all whisky is Scotch. Originally, Scotch was made only from malted barley. In the 18th century, commercial distilleries began introducing whisky made from wheat and rye whole grains.

The distinctive smooth flavor of Scotch comes from producers who “malt the barley grain to turn the starch into sugar prior to fermenting. Some use peat to add a smoky taste. Scotch itself has a long history dating back to 1494 when it was made in monasteries for medicinal purposes usually prescribed to relieve colic, palsy and even smallpox. The tax records of the day, the Exchequer Rolls lists an entry for 'Eight bolls of malt to Friar John Cor wherewith to make aqua vitae' (water of life). This was sufficient to produce almost 1,500 bottles. A boll was an old

Scottish measure of not more than six bushels. (One bushel is equivalent to 25.4 kilograms). When King James IV was in Inverness during September 1506, his Treasurer’s Accounts had entries for the 15th and 17th of the month respectively: ‘For aqua vite to the King. . .’ and ‘For ane flacat of aqua vite to the King. . .’ lt is probable that the aquavitae in this case was spirit for drinking. Even by then, the process of distillation was already wellestablished. No surprise there, distillation methods have been used since the time of Ancient Egyptians. It was around the 16th and 17th centuries when considerable advances were made so it can be assumed that the spirit produced before was probably potent and occasionally even harmful. The earliest reference to a distillery in

the Acts of the Scottish Parliament appears to be in 1690, when mention is made of the famous Ferintosh distillery owned by Duncan Forbes of Culloden. There is also a reference to distilling in a private house in the parish of Gamrie in Banffshire in 1614. This occurs in the Register of the Privy Council, where a man accused of the crime of breaking into a private house, combined with assault, was said to have knocked over some ‘aquavitie’. One of the biggest factors in shaping the whisky industry over the centuries has been the changes in excise duties and taxation. Despite efforts to legislate the trade, during the 18th century, illegal Scotch production flourished. Smuggling and illegal distilling, to avoid the excise officers, was very much prevalent in Scotland right up into

the late 1800s. In different parts of Scotch whisky history, there have been times when the production was banned. It was due to food shortages; the precious grain was to be spared for conventional food production. Finally, in 1823, in an attempt to bring Scotch-making under control, an Excise Act was passed that made small stills illegal and charged a tax per gallon and license fee for larger operations. Eventually, this did the trick and the Scotch industry became (mostly) legitimate. It was in the late 1800s and early 1900s when Scotch became a staple of upperclass society when before, it had been dubbed “the poor man’s strong drink”. Dewar’s, Johnnie Walker and Ballantine’s blends moved Scotch into a more sophisticated product that was appreciated by a wealthier clientele, even being enjoyed by monarchs.

HOT Magazine

57

While the Prohibition in America shut down the import of Scotch, in France, the devastation caused by the phylloxera beetle in the vineyards led Scotch to be the preferred spirit of choice over wine and brandy. The production seemed to wane a little towards the end of last century. It was as though whisky was a dated product that was only enjoyed as a blend by old men. But towards the turn of the century, distilleries caught on to a new customer base—the millennials. With their hipster taste and a craving for authentic nostalgic products, a millennial fan base for the Scottish national drink has quickly grown over the past decade or so. Usually when consumers ask for a Scotch, they mean a blended Scotch whisky, that is a blend of as many as 50 individual Scotch malt and Scotch grain whiskies. Blended whiskies account for more than 95% of all Scotch sold in world markets. Before 1831, when people drank Scotch, they drank malt whisky. Grain whisky was invented in 1831, a different, less intense spirit than malt whisky yet its light flavor extended the appeal of Scotch overall to a wider market.

The art of whisky distilling is unique to each distillery—the aromas and flavors are subtly distinct in each blend. Ironically, did you know the only a quarter of Scotch whisky distilleries are owned by Scottish companies? Although an increasing number of independent businesses own small distilleries, only a few large companies are behind most of the whisky production. Diageo, for one, the father company of Johnnie Walker, White Horse, Mortlach, Lagavulin, etc, is responsible for more than one-third of the total whisky produced in Scotland. Formed in 1997 from the merger of United Distillers and International Distillers, today Diageo is a publicly listed company with a market cap of £46 billion and a market share volume of 36.3%. After Diageo, Perrnod Ricard of France own the most Scotch distilleries when they purchased American company Seagram’s distilled beverages division in 2000— including all the distilleries of Chivas Brothers. Between Diageo and Pernod Ricard, they control 55% of the Scotch market. With a market cap of €29 billion, the company’s roots can be traced back to 1801. Ballantine is the company’s largest whisky brand, ranked number two globally, after Johnnie Walker. However, it is Chivas Regal that is the flagship of the company. Some of their other whiskies include Glenlivet, Aberlour and the Jamesons Irish whiskey giant as well. The largest independently owned Scotch whisky company, William Grant and Sons is the only Scottish company on this list. Family owned, it has been around since 1887. William Grant established the world’s first distillery dedicated to producing single-malt whisky Glenfiddich which is now the bestsingle malt in the world. Beyond Glenfiddich, the company also own a few other Scotch (as well as gin, vodka, and American whiskey) distilleries. The family has also dipped into the blended whisky market, with products such as Grant’s, Monkey Shoulder, and others. It has a market share of 7%. There are others, of course, Bacardi, The Edrington Group, Beam Suntory, BrownForman and even Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton own well-known Scotch distilleries. As the world’s leading drink, Scotch outsells every other noble spirit in world markets—a honorable tribute to the water of life. While there is lots of arguments on how to drink whisky properly—from Scotland’s habit of drinking it straight, or Tokyo’s diluted blend or Shanghai’s unique mix of ice and cold green tea—the only rule worth following is that you should drink Scotch the way you enjoy it. Bugatti, 110 Years of Power, Luxury & Excess

A

s one of the most evocative brands in the automotive world today, Bugatti celebrated its hundred and tenth anniversary after being founded in 1909 by Ettore Bugatti. Its history is tumultuous and checkered with false starts, financial trouble and the intervention of two world wars but as long as the company’s history is, Bugatti has lost none of its association with power, luxury and excess. Ettore Bugatti was born in Milan Italy on September 15, 1881. His family were artists—his father Carlo was an Art Nouveau furniture importer and jewelry designer and his younger brother, Rembrandt was a renowned animal sculptor. His paternal grandfather Giovanni Luigi Bugatti was an architect and sculptor. From a young age, Ettore showed interest in motor vehicle construction and his intrinsic understanding of its different aspects led him to design his first car, the Type 1, in 1898 at the age of 17. His Type 2 became a prize-winning exhibit at the Milan Trade Fair in 1901 and Ettore was given the opportunity to design cars for the wealthy baron Eugene de Dietrich’s who had been captivated by his work. At the Baron’s factory, Ettore designed the Type’s 3, 4,5, 6 and 7 in just two years and they were all badged as De Dietrich Bugatti’s.

Bugatti Type 2 Soon after, Ettore parted ways with the baron and partnered with Emile Mathis, a French businessman to design and build cars of their own. Unfortunately, this arrangement lasted only two years and Ettore settled in what is now the city of Strasbourg in France. In 1907, he married and his wife gave birth to his son and heir Jean. In Strasbourg, he produced several prototype cars before being appointed Production Director at Deutz, a German engine manufacturing company where he designed the Type 8 and Type 9. At the same time, Ettore was designing the Type 10 in the basement of his home. In 1913, he designed a small car for Peugeot, a French automotive manufacturer, named the Type 19 Bebe, which became the first production Peugeot to sell more than 3,000 units. When Bugatti terminated his contract with Deutz in 1909, he took his severance pay and set up his eponymous factory in Molsheim, Alsace. His company became well-known and his designs famous. Automobiles E. Bugatti became known for building some of the fastest, most luxurious and technologically advanced vehicles of their day, with Bugatti’s being very successful competing in early Grand Prix motor racing. Ettore fled Alsace during the First World War and was made to design airplane engines, most notably the U-16 which was only installed in a very limited number of aircraft. After the war, Ettore returned to his beloved factory and in 1919. He exhibited three light cars at the Paris Motor Show, one of which was the Type 13—the first “true” Bugatti. In the 1911 French Grand Prix, the tiny eightvalve Type 13 finished second against a field of illustrious competitors, many with larger engines. Orders for the car poured in after it took 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place at the Brescia Grand Prix of 1921. Ettore created the Type 23 Brescia Tourer, a full-fledged production variant of the Type 13. Later, Bugatti won first place in the first ever Monaco Grand Prix in 1929 and two more victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1937 and 1939. The latter victory is particularly remarkable because Bugatti raced with just a single car and a minimal amount of spare parts. The 1930’s saw Ettore become more ambitious. The Type 18 – nicknamed the ‘Black Bess’ – was one of the most important Bugatti’s of the pre-war era and one of the first street-legal race cars. With a top speed of 100mph it was one of the fastest vehicles in the world, which is why it attracted the attention of aviation pioneer, Roland Garros. He was one of only seven customers for these 5.0-litre, 100hp road rockets. The Type 18 inspired today’s Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse ‘Black Bess’, which was limited to three models, each one with a price tag of €2.15 million.,

Bugatti Type 35 The Bugatti Type 35, was phenomenally successful, winning over 1,000 races in its time. It took the Grand Prix World Championship in 1926 after winning 351 races and setting 47 records in the two prior years. At its height, Type 35s averaged 14 race wins per week. Bugatti won the Targa Florio, an open road endurance race, for five consecutive years, from 1925 through 1929.

Bugatti EB110

If the Type 35 should go down in history as one of the world’s most successful race cars, the Type 41 Royale is arguably one of the most extravagant. In both size and displacement, it was huge – a 21ft wheelbase and 12.7-litre eight-cylinder engine – but it arrived at the wrong time. As the Great Depression shook the world, Bugatti was left with a huge problem. Of the six built, only three were sold to customers and the Royale nearly bankrupted the firm. The first Royale built for a customer sold in 1932 for an incredible 700,000 francs. But life in Molsheim went on. Ettore designed and built a racing airplane called the Model 100 but the Second World War broke out and the plane never flew. In 1932 Ettore’s son, Jean Bugatti took over as head of the racing team and design division. He designed many new models, including the Type 59. In 1976, Motor Sport magazine claimed that to many people this is the most beautiful race car ever built by Bugatti and it’s certainly an elegant machine. By now, Ettore was losing interest in racing and the Bugatti team was no longer competitive. The Type 59 used an enlarged version of the 3.3-litre engine found in the Type 57 and was Bugatti’s final race car of the 1930s. But if Bugatti’s influence within motorsport was dwindling, it was becoming a major force in the luxury sector. The iconic Type 57 was designed by Jean Bugatti and arrived at the 1934 Paris Motor Show.

The end of the 1930s signaled the end of the boom years for Bugatti. In 1936, a strike at the Molsheim factory placed a wedge between Ettore Bugatti and the workers, with the boss deciding to work almost exclusively in Paris and reducing the pay of his employees in Alsace. Three years later, Jean Bugatti died during a test drive, while a year later, the German occupying forces instructed Ettore Bugatti to sell the factory to Hans Trippel for 150 million francs. Ettore died in 1947, with Pierre Marco put in charge. The Type 251 of 1955 represented the last hurrah for ‘old’ Bugatti. By now, the company was focusing on maintenance for old vehicles and engines for the military, rendering the Type 251 little more than a footnote at the end of an exceptional book. Bugatti ceased production in 1956. In 1963, Bugatti was bought by Hispano-Suiza, which renamed the company Messier-Bugatti. Twentyfour years later, Romano Artioli purchased the rights to the trademark and company and moved Bugatti to Campogalliano, near Modena. In 1991, exactly 110 years after the birth of Ettore Bugatti, the company 66

was back with the release of the EB 110. As innovative and evocative as its forebears, the 110 boasted a quadturbocharged V12 engine, permanent four-wheel drive and the world’s first carbon fibre chassis. Unfortunately, Romano Artioli’s vision of a new future for Bugatti failed to materialize and the company was declared bankrupt. Volkswagen acquired the rights to the brand in 1998 and unveiled the EB 118 in October of that year. Three more design studies followed in 1999: the EB 218 four-door saloon, the EB 18.3 and, finally, the EB 18.4 This was the closest hint yet that a formidable hyper car was waiting in the wings. In 2000, the 16.4 concept arrived, based on the 18.4 and powered by a 16-cylinder, 630hp engine. It was named after the French racing driver, Pierre Veyron. In 2016 at the Geneva Motor Show Bugatti unveiled the Chiron: The World’s first production car with 1,500 hp. The $2.7 million USD Chiron, which is named after the racing driver, Louis Chiron, can accelerate to 60 mph in 2.4 seconds, reach 261 mph in electronically-limited production form

(the car is believed to be capable of 288 mph), and is one of the fastest for the 0-248 mph run (41.96 seconds). It can consume around 60,000 liters of air a minute and its entire 100-liter fuel tank in under 10 minutes. Interestingly, the Chiron can be serviced anywhere in the world by Bugatti’s “flying doctors”—a team of professional and dedicated consultants that carry out service, maintenance or repairs on a Bugatti. Bugatti claims their commitment comes from Ettore’s philosophy, “A technical product is only perfect when it’s aesthetically perfect too.”. Added features on the Chiron included a “topspeed” mode which requires a second key for activation, and an auto mode if you can’t choose from its five drive modes. Bugatti remains relentless. Two years later, at the same show, Bugatti debuted a track-focused iteration of the Chiron called the Chiron Sport. For a $400,000 premium over the base Chiron, you get a car that’s 40 lbs lighter, has a stiffer suspension, a new torque vectoring system, and numerous other tweaks.

To mark their 110th anniversary the company announced their newest model, the DIVO. The Divo is an even more exclusive spinoff of Bugatti’s wild Chiron hyper car. Instead of adding power to the insane quad-turbocharged W-16 engine, Bugatti turned the focus to handling. Weighing 77 pounds less than the Chiron and boasting more downforce and a tightened chassis, the Divo is said to be quicker around a track, even if its top speed is limited to 236 mph to the Chiron’s 261. It costs a cool $5.8 million USD’s, not that it matters when you consider that all 40 limited edition units sold out on the first day the hypercar was announced. Bugatti owes its distinctive character to a family of artists and engineers, and has always strived to offer the extraordinary, the unrivalled, the best. The journey of Bugatti that started a century ago is yet to be complete. It is still making most astonishing cars in the world. Although the journey of the Bugatti is filled with ups and downs, the fact is that only Bugatti still manufactures the fastest car in the world.

In Australia alone they have built over 5,000 homes, recreational and club house, a Greg Norman designed 18-hole golf course and 60 hectare lakes on over 1,000 acre of resort development. Michael Tan, the Chairman and founder of Sanctuary Lakes Global Group, has built tens of thousands of homes in his 40 years career worth over 1.5 billion USD’s. Michael decided to venture his first Thailand project in Hua Hin where the company is constructing 57 homes with most surrounding beautiful lakes or with a lake view. The development land is on 40 rai with an additional 16-rai of spectacular and scenic natural lake which are the cornerstone of the development. Sanctuary Lakes offers 3 home designs, all with plenty of skylights to make the homes naturally bright. Recently they completed their latest showhome which is called “The Hummingbird”. The Hummingbird is 2 bedroom home with a convertible room which can be converted into 3rd bedroom if need be. It has 3 bathrooms, an entry foyer, large kitchen, an atrium and a large outdoor patio area encompassing the swimming pool. Bumrungrad Health Briefs Understanding Vasectomy:

8 Facts Every Man (and Woman) Should Know Fifty million men have had a vasectomy — one of the safest, most reliable birth control methods. Despite that, vasectomy continues to inspire misunderstandings, leaving men and women wondering whether it’s the right family planning choice.

1. Vasectomy is a 20-Minute Outpatient Procedure A vasectomy prevents sperm from being released into a man’s semen. To achieve that, about one centimeter is cut from the vas deferens, the tubes sperm pass through during ejaculation. A vasectomy takes about 20 minutes using local anesthesia. The procedure has few side effects, and the risk of complications is minimal.

2. It Doesn’t Involve Much Pain People mistakenly assume vasectomies cause a lot of pain. “Most patients describe the pain as mild, and that is usually from the anesthesia injection at the beginning,” says Dr. Charuspong. “Patients can stand up and walk normally after the procedure, and over-the-counter medication is usually enough for controlling pain.”

3. Recovery Time is Short Faster recovery is one reason most vasectomies use the No-Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV) technique. Traditional vasectomies require two small incisions; NSV uses a single small puncture on the scrotum.

4. Normal Activities Resume in a Week Most patients resume most activities within two days, though heavy lifting and excessive exercise should be avoided the first week. Most patients resume all regular activities, including sex, after a week.

5. Sexual Performance isn’t Affected Men and women wonder whether vasectomy will affect sex. Numerous studies show men with vasectomies report no changes in libido, sexual sensation and the ability to have an erection or an orgasm.

Dr. Charuspong explains: “We cut only the vas deferens. We don't touch the nerves or blood vessels. And we don't touch other structures of the testicles. You still produce semen and sperm, except now the semen won’t contain sperm.”

6. Continue to Practice Safer Sex Having a vasectomy doesn’t change your risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Continue taking precautions to protect yourself and your partner.

7. Results Aren’t Immediate Vasectomy does not make a man sterile immediately. Continue using birth control for up to three months, when your doctor will schedule a semen analysis.

8. Presume That it’s Permanent Vasectomy reversals are possible, but reversal requires microsurgery, making it much more complicated than a vasectomy. And the success rate isn’t 100%. Dr. Charuspong explains: “The outcome depends heavily on how much time has passed since the vasectomy. The longer you wait, the lower the success rate.” If circumstances change, other options can be considered, such as harvesting sperm for in-vitro fertilization (IVF) or artificial insemination.
