ston Martin is famous for being the car of choice for James Bond, starting with his 1964 film, Goldfinger. Founded in 1913, the company has had an interesting past. According to CEO Andy Palmer, speaking to Automotive News Europe, “In the first century we went bankrupt seven times, the second century is about making sure that is not the case. Fortunes have risen for Aston Martin with revenue reported in 2018 at over 1 Billion Pounds. In this issue, we bring you their latest offering, the V12 Speedster. Sold without a top or a windshield for that matter, only 88 lucky souls will have the ability to put one in their garage. Born from an exciting new collaboration with Boeing and created by the brand’s bespoke customisation service ‘Q by Aston Martin,’ this striking livery takes the legendary fighter jet for inspiration. Powering the V12 Speedster is Aston Martin’s scintillating 5.2-litre, TwinTurbo V12 engine that can accelerate to 100km/h in 3.5 seconds on the way to a limited top speed of 300km/h. Orders are now being taken for the V12 Speedster, so slap on your driving gloves and turn to page 36 to see where to send your €765,000 (including VAT). July 28, 2016 saw the very first Mister National Thailand competition, produced and presented by HOT Hua Hin Co. Ltd., the parent company of this magazine. The event took place in the grand ballroom of the Westin Grande Sukhumvit Hotel in Bangkok. Close to 400 people joined in the inaugural event, including local, national and international media. The winners from that night went on to compete and win at many International Pageants. So many won or placed that Misterology, the largest online magazine covering Male Pageants, proclaimed it to be the Best Performing Pageant in the World at the time.

On Sunday, February 23, HOT Magazine produced its 2020 Mister National Thailand competition, taking place in the ballroom of the MeStyle Museum Hotel in Bangkok. Fourteen men competed for three titles; Mister National Thailand 2020, Mister Tourism Worldwide Thailand 2020 & Mister Model Worldwide Thailand 2020. Put on your Sunday best and turn to page 52 to see if you agree with the judge’s decisions. After a spectacular weekend of festivities, the Elephant Boat Race and River Festival ended on March 1 on the banks of the mighty Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. Celebrated in honor of Thailand’s national animal, the elephant, this is the second year of the festival and guests from far and wide flocked to enjoy the three-day charitable event. The spirit and energy of the event was not limited to the water. On land, visitors enjoyed an abundance of on-land entertainment, including Champagne, Wine & Beer tents, live concerts by Paradox and Oat Pramote, kid’s arts and crafts, funfair rides, and a wide selection of delicious food and beverages throughout the day and night. Put on your comfortable shoes and turn to page 68 to see what you missed and why you will want to put this event on your social calendar for next year. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month’s issue. As always, thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

The Bibury is located in a picturesque landscape with majestic mountains, fabulous pineapple fields & peaceful natural rivers. It’s distinguished by its naturally beautiful setting while only being 10 minutes away from award winning golf courses, international schools and hospitals, the beach and the city center. It’s really a sight to behold, the beautiful 29 villa development really feels like a tropical paradise. Each villa‌ and there are 4 (Pine, Teak, Palm & Oak) is equipped with all the modern conveniences you could possibly want including a private salt water swimming pool, a fully decked out european designer kitchen, an open plan living design for alfresco dining, a 12 solar panel system, smart home appliances, high ceilings and elegant interior and exterior touches. After having built over 200+ luxury homes over the 10 years, Khun Joy ventured into the territory of bringing beautiful homes at a lower budget and so, the idea of the Village was born. Beautifully designed and functional, her other new development has 3 different kinds of homes including a one-story house (Type A), a twin house (Type B) and a townhome( Type C). The project itself spans over 13 rai includes a communal swimming pool, fitness center, convenience store, and 24-hour security.

What ties together both projects really lies in the quality and the process. Always beginning with understanding the clients wants and needs. What is their lifestyle like? How big is their family? What would be the most comfortable & convenient for them? As with any large decision - a lot of planning and consideration needs to be taken from both sides. Khun Joy really understands that and that is why she has remained so successful in what she does.

L et’s Meet, Jaco What is your full name and age? My name is Jaco Kleinloog and I am 49 years old. What is your current Job Position? After being in education for 9 years overlapping with dog rescue for 4 years, I opted to take a bit of time out since May 2019. I was keeping an open mind and looking for a different opportunity that is still in line with my passions. Hutsadin Elephant Foundation approached me, and I am currently advising the Foundation on creating a volunteer program. My dad will say I am the greatest philanthropist with the least money. How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? I have been living in Hua Hin since October 2011. Almost 9 years. What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? To be honest, absolutely nothing. I was approached by a local organization where I became their TEFL Trainer. I came for the interview and moved a week later. All I knew when I arrived the first time was that this was going to be home. What do you like most about your profession? I love using my skills and experience in creating a volunteer program that will make Hutsadin Elephant Foundation more sustainable while having a vision of no cruelty towards elephants and an environment where all elephants are free roaming. What do you like least about your profession? I wish more people would read up about the Foundation, its Vision and its Rescued Elephants before they visit. One must see the whole picture and not only bits of it. Then one will appreciate what is being done. I find that people are quick to judge without knowing the history of, or the vision that we have for the elephants. What do you like most about Hua Hin? It has absolutely everything. Seeing the sun rise over the ocean. Every day, I am reminded that I live in one of Thailand’s gems. As I did not know

12

HOT Magazine

anything about Hua Hin, I always considered it to be one of Thailand’s best kept secrets. I am never more than a 30 minute drive from any of my favorite places. The beaches, temples malls and markets are on my doorstep. What is your favorite restaurant and why? Hmmm , this is not fair. There are so many lovely places…. If I have to choose, it would have to be the little restaurant on the beach at Sai Noi. I arrive and they start streaming my favorite South African Radio Station. I am also a creature of habit and enjoy my Egg Benedict at Morning Bread in soi 94. They know I like it on a croissant and they make a great, no frills Latte. I go to the gym because I am almost 50 and working towards a healthier lifestyle. I also enjoy cooking Thai and Western food. What would you recommend to newcomers to do in Hua Hin and why? Look at joining some clubs/organizations. Research this incredible town and make a list of things you would like to explore. Expect your plans to change, accept it, it’s okay. See it as an adventure. Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you? Before moving to Hua Hin I skippered yachts on ocean crossings and had an encounter with a Human Trafficking vessel in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Sailing the open oceans has led me to become a modern day recluse. Something I am looking at changing. What is the most outlandish thing you have ever done and why? I swam across the equator in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. I have a huge problem with height and wanted to see if depth was an issue. The opportunity presented itself while sailing from Cape Town to Croatia and I took it.

Ten wine merchants each had a table to display and offer tastings of their selected wines. Old World wines included offerings from Bordeaux and other renowned French regions, plus

classic Italian and Spanish regional wines. Representing the New World were wines from the Australian Barossa and Clare Valley regions, plus offerings from New Zealand and Chile. And of course, Hua Hin’s own Monsoon Valley wines had a central position. More than sixty sparkling, white and red wines were on tasting with the wine professionals ready to give insights and guide guests through their selections. Order forms and gift packs were available for those who found tipples that just had to be added to their home

cellars. With such variety and choice of wines, the event certainly lived up to the ‘Vine’ grand wine tasting title! As if not to be outdone with the wine offering, Marriott’s culinary team presented tables abundantly filled with delicious cold meats (Charcuterie), fresh-baked bread selections, cheese boards filled with temptation, iceboats topped with freshly shucked oysters, local squid flash fried, and a sizzling BBQ to grill the large fresh prawns and scampi.

A perfect balmy beach evening, an astounding selection of wines to taste, an abundance of savoury and sweet delicacies to accompany, music curated to the occasion adding to the ambience, and a very engaged crowd enjoying all on offer. The menu is made exclusively with fresh ingredients that are supplied daily from the nearby fishing villages and local farms. One of the hallmarks of Escape is the live cooking on the beachfront barbeques as a relaxing playlist of DJ beats strains in the background. D

ining by the sea has some undefinable attraction. It never fails to be captivating, perhaps romantic, and always memorable. Additionally, it is often supposed that the food just tastes better when enjoyed down by the water. To test this theory first hand, our HOT Magazine food team visited Chay Had, the Hilton Hua Hin Resort’s beachfront restaurant and lounge. In prime position right at the resort’s beach frontage, Chay Had offers guests uninterrupted views. Either north over Hua Hin’s original timber finger

wharves and onto Cha-Am in the distance. East to the horizon, while south presents the beginning of Hua Hin beach plus glimpses of those ‘stone heads’ in the water from which Hua Hin derives its name. (หัว Hua in Thai means head, and หิน Hin means stone) Shaded by tall palms and fragrant frangipani trees, the alfresco Chay Had Lounge is the perfect place for a relaxing beverage. On our arrival, attentive bar staff extolled the virtues of their current promotion. It seems their mixologists have gotten creative with the humble Gin & Tonic. “Step 17” is a

nod to the hotels 17 stepped levels and sees tea and caramel added to tall and elegant Gin & Tonic. An alternative is a Thai basil-infused G&T with fresh raspberries. The later more to my taste. Sunset Happy Hour happens from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Chay Had’s Lounge and presents another reason to drop by, take in the beachfront ambience and try a refreshing beverage (or two). Chay Had has, in essence, two side by side dining areas. A timbered deck under the giant frangipanis with lowkey lighting and absolute beachfront views. The other is an expansive ele-

HOT MAGAZINE RECOMMENDED vated, open to the sky, crescent-shaped deck providing those uninterrupted views. Chay Had’s menu explains they strive for the creative pairing of Thai, Asian and Western flavours, and so our food journey commenced. Crab Cakes, light, flavoursome, rich in crab and sitting atop scallop shells filled with a petit salad of edamame, tomato, avocado, coriander, and accompanied by artistic droplets of chipotle mayonnaise. A salad of pomelo and tiger prawn delicately presented, though described as spicy, it’s refined, and well-balanced

taste allowed the sweetness of the pomelo and prawn to shine. Our final starter was BBQ duck spring rolls – crispy deep-fried rolls with good-sized pieces of duck amongst the filling and served with a black bean sweet chilli sauce. Our selection of mains included a generous piece of saltwater Butterfish grilled and topped with crispy Thai garlic and pepper, accompanied by fresh salad greens and tomato: a dish designed to hero the fish. Pad Thai is an internationally recognised Thai favourite, and Chay Had’s chefs el-

evate this dish with the addition of whole jumbo prawns. A towering plate of Thai deliciousness. Lamb cutlets were the final main, with Chef presenting three generous sized cutlets grilled medium well sitting atop delicately flavoured saffron rice. Also, on the plate was a shot glass of black pepper sauce, allowing us to decide to enjoy the lamb as is, straight from the pan, or with the addition of Chef’s sauce.

As well as overseeing the day to day kitchen operations of the hotel, Executive Sous Chef Ong is also a highly skilled Pâtissier, and three of his creations were on show this evening. Mango Delice – a creamy Panna Cotta sitting on a raspberry biscuit and all coated in a glistening mango glaze, served with chocolate soil and basil seed passionfruit coulis. A feast for the eyes and taste delight. Chef’s take on the Thai classic mango sticky rice is reminiscent of a Jackson Pollock painting with edible ‘paint’ splattered across the plate to add extra vibrancy to an already colourful combination. Warm Chocolate Tarte was the final dessert we chose, and oh my, what a delightful finish to our meal. A buttery shortcrust pastry shell filled with warm rich and gooey chocolate fondant made even more extravagant with a piece of gold leaf on top. A cherry compote, along with fresh berries, a sprinkling of granola and vanilla ice cream round out this crowd-pleaser of a dessert. Chay Had is open for lunch and dinner with separate menus for each. And unlike many of the establishment restaurant across Hua Hin, Chay Had’s displayed menu prices for all dishes already include the 7% VAT and 10% Service charges. This means there’s no need to do such calculations as you peruse the menu, and no surprises when presented with the bill.

Aston Martin V12 Speedster

A

ston Martin Lagonda Global Holdings plc is a British manufacturer of luxury sports cars and grand tourers. It was founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford and became famous with the fictional character James Bond following his use of a DB5 model in the 1964 film Goldfinger. The company had a troubled history after the third quarter of the 20th century but has also enjoyed long periods of success and stability. “In the first century we went bankrupt seven times”, CEO Andy Palmer told Automotive News Europe. “The second century is about making sure that is not the case. In 1975, at one of its lowest points, the company was purchased out of receivership for just 1.05 million pounds. Aston Martin’s fortunes have since turned around greatly, with revenue in 2018 reported at over 1 billion Pounds. Fueling the company’s fortunes are cars like the Aston Martin V12 Speedster which made its global debut on March 4th, with just 88 lucky souls having the ability to put one in their garage. Created by luxury British marque’s bespoke customisation service ‘Q by Aston Martin’, the Aston Martin V12 Speedster is a truly visceral driver’s car that draws inspiration from both the brand’s rich racing history and aeronautical design. Aston Martin Lagonda President and Group CEO, Dr Andy Palmer said: “It makes me enormously proud to reveal Aston Martin’s latest, most exciting special model today. The V12 Speedster is an incredible demonstration of the breadth of capability and determination from the ‘Q by Aston Martin’ team, who have worked tirelessly to create this stunning, two-seat sports car aimed at our most demanding and enthusiastic customers.”

Conceived a little over 12 months ago, the V12 Speedster has undergone an intensive development programme, going from drawing board to production reality within that short period. Demonstrating the skills and meticulous planning of ‘Q by Aston Martin’ and Aston Martin Design, the V12 Speedster is a living show car, underlining the company’s commitment to deliver customers a stunning driver’s car, using the engineering ingenuity and advanced materials evident throughout the entire Aston Martin range. Utilising Aston Martin’s latest bonded aluminium architecture, the V12 Speedster utilises elements from both the DBS Superleggera and Vantage model lines to create its own unique platform. With independent double wishbone front, and multi-link rear suspension with coil springs and adaptive damping offering Sport, Sport+ and Track modes, the V12 Speedster also benefits from standard 21-inch forged centre lock alloy wheels. Brakes of 410mm on the front axle and 360mm at the rear are also standard equipment. Over the V12 Speedster’s unique chassis is a bespoke body constructed almost entirely from carbon fibre. Miles Nurnberger, Director of Design, Aston Martin Lagonda, said: “With the V12 Speedster we do go back a step and look into our past for inspiration. Since the DB11 launch, everything has been focused and very forward looking. Here though, we find a different tempo. There’s clear lineage from the 1959 Le Mans winning DBR1 to our Centenary celebratory CC100 Speedster Concept in 2013. There is also a bit of 1953 DB3S in the mid-section, so it really is our latest incarnation of the Speedster concept. It’s also inspired by fighter jets as much as it is by our history, and it has been created to deliver an incredibly visceral experience, hence why it is a V12, rather than a V8. With the V12 Speedster we are amplifying all the emotional strings that we can to the absolute maximum.”

Nurnberger adds: “No roof or screen, a big engine, low, with broad shoulders and exaggerated and emotional styling with twin humps and the spine separating the driver and passenger. The light, low, rear end contrasts with the bold, enlarged grille, unique headlights and bonnet nostril at the front. The bonnet nostril we haven’t done in a very long time, but we’ve brought them back. It’s a neat trick visually to allow us to win some space for the V12. It creates this iconic looking vent.” The interior specification pushes new boundaries, using a mix of traditional and modern materials. Structural satin carbon fibre, contrasts with traditional hand-crafted Saddle Leather, chrome, aluminium and even 3D printed rubber. Visually and physically the interior reduces mass, for a leaner, efficient style, but one that retains all the emotion and craftsmanship Aston Martins are renowned for. In front of the passenger is a removable leather bag in place of a traditional glove box, while there’s additional storage space under the rear bumps for luggage.

Born from an exciting new collaboration with Boeing and created by the brand’s bespoke customisation service ‘Q by Aston Martin’, this striking livery takes the legendary fighter jet for inspiration and is finished in Skyfall Silver, with contrasting satin black on the exhaust tips, vent grilles and vanes. The dark theme is carried through to the interior, with satin dark chrome, machined aluminium, black leather, black technical textile, black carpets and vivid red Aston Martin scripted door pulls, creating a purposeful look for this conceptual styling. Powering the V12 Speedster is Aston Martin’s scintillating 5.2-litre, Twin-Turbo V12 engine, with a peak output of 700hp1 and 753Nm1 of torque. Front mid-mounted, the all alloy, quad cam 48-valve engine is mated to a ZF 8-Speed automatic transmission with a limited-slip differential driving the rear wheels. The V12 Speedster is able to accelerate to 100km/h in 3.5 seconds on the way to a limited top speed of 300km/h.

The iconic V12 engine promises scintillating performance, but further underlining the V12 Speedster’s abundant character and unparalleled commitment to a thrilling drive is an even more invigorating aural signature. To create this Aston Martin’s engineers have created a bespoke stainless-steel exhaust system exiting centrally into the diffuser surface at the rear of the car for an even more rousing, characterful sound from the drivetrain. With the V12 Speedster, every element of the drive is experiential, most obviously the removal of the windscreen adding to the visceral engagement, heightening the driving experience to new levels. Matt Becker, Aston Martin Chief Engineer, said: “for raw, driving thrills the V12 Speedster is unparalleled, the fully open element of the car adding a new dimension to the experience. It engages on every level, delivering a precise, involving driving experience, with agility and poise backed by abundant power from Aston Martin’s twin-turbo 5.2-litre V12. Driving doesn’t get any purer than this. Aston Martin Lagonda President and Group CEO, Dr Andy Palmer said: “nothing demonstrates Aston Martin’s commitment to providing unique, special models to its customers more than the V12 Speedster. The 88 hand-built cars will be sought after by driving enthusiasts and collectors alike all around the world. I’m excited not just about what they offer drivers, but of what it represents. The V12 Speedster not just showcases our incredible engineering capability and ambition, but also celebrating Aston Martin’s rich heritage.” Orders are now being taken for the V12 Speedster, with pricing starting at £765,000 including VAT and deliveries expected to begin in the first quarter of 2021.

K

oh Samui was once known as the ultimate backpacker’s haven but is now a world-class leisure destination for global travelers of every kind. About 473 km and ten hours south from Bangkok, Samui is the third largest island in Thailand. Surrounded by crystal blue waters, the island of Samui is one of the top island destinations in the world, and why wouldn’t it be? It is a tropical treasure—filled with villages built entirely of bamboo, lush jungle interiors, turquoise-fringed beaches, and glorious sunshine all year round. Until the late-20th century, Koh Samui was an isolated, self-sufficient community, having little connection with the mainland of Thailand. The island was without roads until the early 1970s, and the 15 km journey from one side of the island to the other could involve a whole-day trek through the mountainous central jungles. Koh Samui today is a cosmopolitan melting pot. The island attracts everyone from budget travellers staying in simple beachside bungalows to the wealthiest holidaymakers arriving by private jet for a weekend at one of the many ultra-lux resorts. Samui’s amazing landscapes are just a fraction of the appeal; the local culture gives you a taste of the region’s Asian traditions and a unique heritage preserved in hidden Buddhist temples. Despite the 21st century influence which has seen a rise in Western cuisine and modern hotels, traditional

properties can still be found, as can family-owned Thai restaurants, which offer an authentic taste of Southeast Asian cuisine. When visiting the island, you may be tempted to spend your trip draped over a chaise longue at one of the island’s top resorts; however, there is much to be explored outside the comfortable hotels. From the hustle and bustle of Chaweng Beach to the lively yet relaxed atmosphere of Lamai Beach to the timeless feel of Bophut’s Fisherman’s Village to the tropical beach paradise of Maenam, Koh Samui is unique among Thailand’s islands in maintaining a broad appeal for everyone. For those nervous about straying too far from the beaten track, wherever your exploration takes you, you’re never far from one of Samui’s soft sandy beaches. But if you’d like to go further, the island is a neighbor to more than 60 other islands such as Koh Phangan, notorious for its Full Moon parties; Koh Tao, a diver’s heaven; and Koh Nang Yuan, with its picture postcard sandbar. The most fascinating beaches in the area, however, can be visited during an excursion to the archipelago of 42 islands at the Angthong National Marine Park. This national reserve is roughly 45-90 minutes away from Koh Samui depending on your method of transport. Here, you’ll take in the wonders of these unspoiled islands which

are home to a wide range of primates. Take advantage of the surroundings to hike, swim, kayak, snorkel, and dive. Samui also has a vibrant nightlife scene. Partially due to the cheap places to stay that draw the backpacking crowd, the beach gets no less lively at night. Additionally, the wealth and variety of discos, clubs and beer bars is also a significant draw, bringing a lively crowd of revellers. The nightlife in each district is different—Chaweng is wild, Lamai is relaxing, Bophut is family-friendly and Maenam is romantic. Be sure to check out Samui’s Walking Street, where one can find a fantastic array of souvenirs, local food, clothing, and accessories. Thai hospitality is not exaggerated—the hospitality here is impeccable. Locals are friendly and you can find yourself enjoying a night out with a group of like-minded strangers at one of the many bars along the ocean side. There are clubs, bars, and beach parties attended by a mix of farangs, locals, backpackers, and jetsetters alike, most of which congregate at Soi Green Mango (akin to Soi Cowboy in Bangkok). Alongside the buckets of cheap whiskey and cheaper beer are sophisticated gourmet restaurants. You’ll find Classic Thai dancing a short distance from ladies mud wrestling, mind-blowing fire shows, and the country’s famous transgender cabaret shows. In essence, the night never seems to end in Samui.

If you prefer a quieter night but don’t want to stay in, you can wander off the main road, where you’re likely to find several bars occupied by some pleasant folks gathered around a pool table with a drink. While restaurants and bars can be found at all of the island’s main beach resort areas, it is Chaweng, and, to a slightly lesser extent, Lamai, where the parties go on all through the night. The nightlife in other areas is largely limited to restaurants and a handful of quiet local bars where you can relax without all the hustle and bustle. When you’ve exhausted yourself of the nightlife in Samui, take a ferry to the other islands, one of which is Koh Nang Yuan. Koh Nang Yuan is a standout with one of the loveliest shorelines where you can sit and appreciate being calm on the idyllic sandy beach. No autos, hustle or clamor. The place is the epitome of peace and an ideal place to loosen up, or for the more daring, an opportunity to plunge into an energizing new ordeal. Koh Nang Yuan is one of the smallest of the neighboring islands of Koh Tao and consists of three islands that are connected by a sandbank. Koh Nang Yuan, Koh Nang Yuan Lek and Koh Hang Tao. Most visitors take a day trip to these islands before setting off for Koh Phangan. Koh Nang Yuan is only accessible by boat, but the beautiful views and powdery white beach is worth it. You can take a boat from the northern end of Sairee Beach on Koh Tao or you can also arrange trips from Koh Phangan and Koh Samui. The island is open from 10am to 5pm with exceptions for public holidays. The island is privately-owned and asks a 100 Baht entry fee per person to visit. Guests must leave no later than 5pm unless you are staying at the Nangyuan Island Dive Resort, the only accommodation on the island.

The island is known for its crystal clear water and colorful fish. You will want to visit Twin Peaks and Green Shake. Twin Peaks consists of two large underwater rocks submerged from seven meters to twenty meters in depth, which makes it suitable for all levels of ability and is known as one of the best dive sites in the area. Great for underwater photography, you’ll have a good chance of seeing clown fish, moray eels, sting rays and green sea turtles. In season you might even catch a glimpse of whale sharks. If you don’t want to dive, then there are plenty of opportunities to snorkel instead. Many hold the opinion that Koh Nang Yuan offers the best snorkeling in Thailand. The shallow reefs surrounding the island have soft and hard corals just a few meters away from the beach and the waters are clear enough to see schools of all sorts of tropical fish like the colorful parrotfish and shy angelfish.

The best adventure to be had on Koh Nang Yuan is hiking to the famous viewpoint that overlooks the entire island. It’s an easy 15-minute hike to the Koh Nang Yuan viewpoint via a concrete path that leads the way through a small forest, up some stairs and then a quick scramble along a couple of large boulders, finally emerging at the viewpoint where Incredible panoramic views await. Here you will get an aerial perspective overlooking Nang Yuan Island and a glimpse of the beautiful western coastline of Koh Tao. And if that’s not thrilling enough, the island’s newest activity, zip-lining, might just be the ticket, offering a 250 meter adrenaline-fuelled ride from island to island. All in all, Koh Nang Yuan is proof that the best things come in small packages

Koh Samui, like the rest of Thailand, has a wet season marked by heavy rains and tropical storms, typically from September/October to mid-December. Because of this, prices are normally extremely attractive through these months, where storms descend and then clear, giving visitors at least a few hours of sunshine each day. February and March are the sunniest months and traveling here in June is great, as it’s perfectly dry, with daytime temperatures around 86°F. It’s also right before tourists begin arriving in droves from July to August. Whether you party through the night in Samui or relax peacefully in Nang Yuan, every moment of your journey will remain phenomenal.

fter a spectacular weekend of festivities, the Elephant Boat Race and River Festival ended on March 1 on the banks of the mighty Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. Celebrated in honor of Thailand’s national animal, the elephant, this is the second year of the festival and guests from far and wide flocked to enjoy the three-day charitable event.

Sixteen teams from around the globe raced against one another aboard elephant-themed boats to try and claim the trophy from the previous year’s winner, the Royal Thai Navy Seals. Each race took place across 200 m with four teams per heat; the first to cross the finish line won. The specially designed long paddle boats were crowned at the bow with carved elephant heads, and

at the stern with traditional Thai fish motifs. In the end, the Royal Thai Navy Seals, racing on the Citi boat, claimed victory once more from three other teams and received the inaugural King’s Cup Elephant Boat Race trophy graciously granted by His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua.

On land, visitors also enjoyed an abundance of on-land entertainment, including Champagne, Wine & Beer tents, live concerts by Paradox and Oat Pramote, kid’s arts and crafts, funfair rides, and a wide selection of delicious food and beverages throughout the day and night. Thai celebrity and environmental activist Pearypie Amata Chittasenee and Jay Spencer were also in attendance, along with a host of Bangkok’s high society. The event was hosted by Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas & raised significant charitable donations through ticket sales that will all be donated to elephant-related causes throughout Thailand. A further achieved goal was generating awareness to benefit the future of the Asian elephant. Money raised this year will go towards funding conservation workshops, to improve the lives of elephants and mahout families in the Surin Province where ex-street elephants face ongoing hardship.

P

alm Hills Golf Club and Residences has been one of the premier housing developments in Hua Hin for over 20 years. It has the highest density of luxury homes with some of the biggest land plots of any housing development in the city. Most land plots are one and a half rai, 2400 square meters. The spacious land plots allow for very substantial and expensive haciendas. Unlike most developments in Hua Hin where your house options are

74

limited to the developer’s show house models, here you can build whatever suits your fancy, within reason, of course. Palm Hills is in the popular North end of Hua Hin with many restaurants, shops and facilities nearby and more popping up on an almost weekly basis. The dual carriageway Canal Road parallels Petchakasem, (the main road thru Hua Hin). It passes right in front of Palm Hills, making it the desired route to get to and from town on busy

weekends. When you drive through Palm Hills you will notice that there are a quite a few empty land plots. They have been purchased as an investment or with a plan to build at a later date. One of the joys of living in Palm Hill’s is the tranquility. It doesn’t matter if you play golf or not, living on a golf course is like living in a giant, magnificent, peaceful park. If you are a golfer, Palm Hills is a

good course. It’s not the best, Black Mountain & Banyan vie for that honor. It is though a challenging course. You have a choice of 3 tees for men plus a ladies Tee so you can adjust your play to your level and the mandatory caddies are well versed and give great tips, plus they speak English well. Another reason I like Palm Hills is that it has a much higher proportion of full time residents living there, so you get a real sense of community which

is lacking from most housing estates where the homes are mostly holiday homes. When talking to Palm Hill’s owners one of the things they frequently mention is the security they have on the development, with many proclaiming it’s the best in Hua Hin. Here you have the requisite guard station checking cars at the entrance but you also have manned guard stations throughout the project. From an investment perspective, I

believe Palm Hills will appreciate at a faster rate than almost all developments in Hua Hin in the next few years. With the building boom of residential projects happening between Hua Hin’s airport and Cha Am, the next city to our north, there will be an exponential growth in restaurants, stores and facilities. There will be no delineation between Hua Hin and Cha Am anymore; it will all become one with Palm Hill’s at the near center. Location, location, location, as they say.

Purchasing a home or land in Palm Hills not only allows you the ability to buy or build a large luxury home on a substantial land plot, but your home will be close to everything you need. Both Makro and Villa Market grocery stores are nearby, mainstays for expats looking for familiar food items from their home countries. Additionally, when traveling from Bangkok or its International Airport, you won’t have to drive through the city to get to your home, saving you plenty of time on busy weekends. Almost all homes and land plots come with a lifetime membership to the Palm Hills Golf Club and their separate Sports Club, although “lifetime” really means 30 years and “family membership” means a husband, wife, and two children. If the house and land are owned by a company then different membership types apply. If you are buying a re-sale home or land plot you will get a full 30 years memberships but there will be a transfer fee that will need to be paid to Palm Hills to change the membership names.

The Palm Hills Golf Course Club House contains a pro shop, locker rooms, a main dining room, and an outdoor restaurant for light meals and drinks, the 19th hole as they say. The separate Sports Club is quite large and contains outdoor tennis courts, indoor badminton courts, squash courts, a fitness center, snooker tables, table tennis, a large outdoor swimming pool, and a very reasonably priced restaurant.
