Proud Continues To Enhance Hua Hin

f someone was to ask me who is Hua Hin’s biggest booster, after living in Hua Hin for 13 years, my answer would be quick and easy. Hua Hin’s biggest booster would have to be the Liptapanlop family and their company Proud Real Estate. Proud’s first foray into Hua Hin was with the opening of their InterContinental Hua Hin Resort where they flew in International singing star Paul Anka to perform at the grand opening party. Since that time almost all big events and happenings in Hua Hin have either been put on by Proud and the InterContinental or they have been a major sponsor of it. The InterContinental World Tennis Thailand Championship is a perfect example. Every year they bring in the top tennis players in the world to compete at their end of year tournament. 2017 saw WTA World #1 ranked Simona Halep along with 3 other WTA players with top 10 rankings come to Hua Hin and play for an exuberant crowd. Serena and her sister Venus have been here as has Maria Sharapova and Caroline Wozniacki, amongst many other big name players. They also put on the yearly Princess Pa Asian Beach Polo Championship. The only Polo played on the beach in Asia, this year it takes place on April 21st. After opening the InterContinental, Proud has gone on to enhance the stature of Hua Hin by building the 1 billion baht waterpark Vana Nava, the 500 million baht sports facility True Arena, an addition to their InterContinental Resort called the BluPort Wing, partnered with the Mall Group in the 5 billion baht BluPort shopping mall and on the 24th of February they held a glittering grand opening ceremony for their Holiday Inn Resort Vana Nava Hua Hin, Asia’s first Holiday Inn® water park resort. More than 400 guests, including many celebrities, business moguls, politicians and other VIPs, attended the event along with the Liptapanlop family and senior executives from the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), owners of the Holiday Inn Brand. Guests were treated to an action-packed evening of live entertainment, including a show from popular Thai actress Jenny Tienposuwan, and an exclusive concert by iconic Thai pop star Tata Young. These performances were followed by an extravagant, extended firework display that lit up the night sky, watched from the resort’s towering Sky Deck and roof top bar Vana Nava Sky.

Ms. Proudputh Liptapanlop, Executive Director of Proud Real Estate gave one of several opening night speeches saying ““Hua Hin has long been a beloved destination among the Thai aristocrats and high society since the 1920s when it was hand-picked to be the first resort town of Thailand by H.M. King Rama VI. Because of its sandy white beaches along with stunning mountainscape, its long history and its charms and heritage as a seaside fishing village, Hua Hin over the years has attracted many tourists both Thai and International. According to Franck Rodriguez, the resort’s General Manager, “We are proud to set a new quality benchmark with a fully-integrated hospitality offering. It is a truly impressive resort with extensive facilities, cutting-edge technology and breath-taking views over the Gulf of Thailand. It also breaks new ground in Asia, becoming the first Holiday Inn property attached to a water park. So, it is fitting that we launch this incredible property with such a magical and memorable party.”

The hotel features 300 rooms and suites, including a series of interconnecting rooms and KidSuites®, with special ‘secret’ rooms decked out with bunk beds and play areas. Children aged 12 and under can stay and eat for free, and all guests are offered free Wi-Fi. All 300 rooms will be sold inclusive of unlimited waterpark access for all guests and customers will be given an RFID wristband upon arrival, which not only provides them entry into the waterpark, but also unlocks their hotel room and pays for all their food and other purchases. The wristband can either be post- or prepaid so parents can top them up for their kids and control how much they can spend. Vana Nava first opened its doors in 2014 and has become one of the biggest names in waterparks in Thailand. The “Water Jungle” features 20 world class slides plus many attractions and has been an overwhelming success welcoming close to a million visitors so far.

When they are not playing in the Vana Nava Hua Hin Water Jungle, guests can unwind in the resort’s own extensive facilities, including a dramatic 26th floor infinity pool, the Tea Tree Spa, a 24-hour fitness centre, kids’ club and children’s pool. Dining and entertainment options include the all-day Plamong Restaurant, casual Pool Bar, and the stylish Vana Nava Sky Bar, Restaurant & Observation Deck, which offers spectacular views across the Gulf. Holiday Inn Resort Vana Nava Hua Hin is also an attractive new option for event planners. With five function rooms and one of Hua Hin’s largest ballrooms, the resort is likely to become an important destination for the Thailand’s MICE industry. The grand opening party for Holiday Inn Vana Nava Hua Hin marks the arrival of a new landmark on Thailand’s Gulf coast, and a new era of hospitality in Hua Hin. Rounding out the Vana Nava development will be premium residences in the form of high rise condominium towers which are expected to launch later this year.

River Life Along The Chao Phraya

he capital’s most famed river is one that has made its history throughout the centuries. Serving as a crucial outpost for many to make a living out of and travel the banks up and down the city, it is as crucial to the heart of Bangkok as the people who live in it. Without it, commerce would have been naught along the centuries.

to live and offer a space for past generation to lay down their first settlements, to succeed, both back in the day and in today’s Bangkok.

It is one of the reasons the capital was moved from the ancient city of Ayutthaya and remains a crucial part of Thai identity years down the road.

Relevantly named Mae Nam Chao Phraya, the stream was the first source of income of many city dwellers. In Thai, Mae Nam is a way of saying river with Mae implying mother and Nam water. The Thai illustrious and honourable title Chao Phraya in Thai signifies Grand Duke. The two terms together really mirror the adoration Thais find for the river that dissects the capital.

Bangkok's most famed body of water has always formed the bloodstream of the city and its people. For many years, it has given all that is required to local people

Bangkok follows its foundation back to the fifteenth century when it started as a little town under the administer of the first capital of Siam, Ayutthaya. Early pilgrims

picked the first site on account of the land's fruitfulness and the water's wealth of fish. Because of its key area close to the waterway's mouth, the settlement soon developed in size and significance by filling in as a Customs station. In 1767 after the fall of Ayutthaya to the Burmese, King Taksin moved the nation's Wealth to Bangkok on the western banks of the stream in the zone now known as Thonburi. In 1782 King Rama I, finding the eastern banks as more resourceful to the population, established what is known today as Bangkok and praised the event by building a portion of the world's most flabbergasting structures and points of interest, for example, Wat Phra Kaew and the Grand Palace.

Waterways, also known as khlongs, be they natural or made to fill the demand, started to give Bangkok its identity and contributed essentially to the cityscape and the occupants' way of life. Bangkok soon earned the appellation “Venice of the East.” Bangkokians at that point went by its conduits and regularly met in the now world famous floating markets – a genuinely one of a kind lifestyle. Prominent Westerners, for example, Joseph Conrad and Noel Coward later identified the Chao Phraya as one of their most loved rivers in the Far East. Like all flourishing urban areas worldwide, Bangkok has changed much since its introduction to the world. The city has extended a long way past the stream's banks. Be that as it may, local people still live, work, and play along the Chao Phraya. In excess of 50,000 individuals still utilize its ships each day. Moderate freight ships bearing load move inflexibly upstream. Youngsters still bathe in water – now inevitably having turned brown due to pollution. The banks' scene and lifestyle has developed vertically with high rise hotels like the Millennium Hilton and condominiums like The River. Lodgings and townhouses sit beside sanctuaries, places of worship and metro structures that look nineteenth century European while yards away a wooden sampan offers noodle soup or dried squid to hungry waterway specialists. It is this juxtaposition of quiet and disarray, present day and customary, religious and mainstream, revolting and heavenly, remote and indigenous that makes the Chao Phraya so suggestive.

Like every single urban waterway, the destiny of the Chao Phraya is interwoven with the city. King Rama I, who nicknamed it the River of Kings, already set the precedent, and it is the thing that gives Bangkokians their identity today. The Chao Phraya starts in the north of Thailand where the Ping, Wang, Yom and Nan streams converge to shape an estuary at Paknam Pho District in Nakorn Sawan Province. It streams southwards through Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi and Bangkok before flowing into the Gulf ofThailand in Samut Prakarn. Previously, the regions that are now near the famed Thammasat University that take after the banks of the waterway – extending descending to Wat Arun Ratchawararam – were really one real estate parcel without the river coursing through as it does in modern times. Amid the years 1534-1546 Somdet Phrachai Rachathirat, the King of Ayutthaya, ordered that a trench be burrowed to make an alternate way in the territory of the tightest neck of land, beginning from the mouth of Bangkok Noi channel to the mouth of Bangkok Yai waterway. He named it Khlong Lat (Bangkok alternate route channel). The Chao Phraya River in modern life is still the most crucial river for the general population of Thailand who base their agricultural and farming endeavours on the fauna it harbours, such as fish and other. The waterway is an imperative transport connection for the transportation of teak and rice to Bangkok. Local people have made the banks their home. It is no big surprise that the waterway is viewed as the bloodline of Thais. 32

HOT Magazine

Today, local people living along the Chao Phraya River banks keep up a credible way of life. The stream additionally assumes an imperative part in Thailand's energetic celebrations, for example, Loy Krathong, held each November when thanks are communicated to the lord of water, and Songkran – the Thai New Year festivities. The advent of modern transportation gave the Chao Phraya River a newer usage, with large cargo ships now floating through its open waterway. They, like most of the commerce throughout the capital’s history, come from all over the world. For the commuter, public transport such as the BTS Skytrain makes it convenient to travel along it and across it. Many find the riverbank along the Shaphan Thaksin stop a focal point to cross over by boat or ferry, which is now a prevailing and classic attraction amongst the tourist and local populations alike.

Ayutthaya Wat Putthai Sawan"

A host of high class luxury hotels have made it a niche market for every brand of traveller, with spaces such as Asiatique, where people can go from night shopping and massage hopping to dinner and river cruising. There too to one can make their way to old Chinatown district, where there are a host of different cultural intertwines, with old architectural designs welcoming the new and the fresh.

Scores of restaurants have opened up in that area, from the those attempting to emulate what would have been the life of a Chao Phraya River fisherman back in the day, to those taking to more modern traditions. Major commercial developments such as ICON SIAM and Concept malls such as Lhong 1919 have also set up shop. As we featured in our magazine in January, it draws a new meaning to what it

means to be part of the river and at the same time be part of modernity. As a whole, the Chao Phraya River is a gem of the Bangkok life, making it an essential place, just like back in the day, to make of the city a thriving and bustling port of entry and way of sustenance.

Amphawa’s Floating Market

T

hailand offers an endless array of interesting, fascinating experiences! Be it new foods to taste, cultural events to witness, natural attractions to visit, or new locations to tour and explore. Since moving to Hua Hin back in 2015, we’ve continued to explore our new ‘backyard’ - Thailand. There is just so much to see and do – fun, adventure and discovery around every corner!

pla tu (mackerel), salt fields and coconut palm sugar. For centuries, the easiest way for locals to move their produce to markets was by boat on the narrow canals (Klongs) and broader rivers. Villages and towns were built on these same waterways, becoming the centre of life and transport.

Our most recent ‘discovery tour’ was to Amphawa just 145 km north of our home in Hua Hin and only 70 km south of Bangkok.

The village of Amphawa, sitting adjacent the Mae Khlong river, has managed to retain this classic rural Thai charm. So much so, the town received an award from UNESCO in 2008 for its efforts to conserve the centuries-old teak wood homes and temples that line Amphawa’s canals.

This whole area at the top of the Gulf of Thailand is dissected by three major rivers and their tributaries – with the land and waterways being ideal for food production. The naturally rich region has an abundance of seafood, fruits and vegetables and is renowned for its

One of the key attractions now days is its Floating Market. The market itself sits on the quaint Amphawa canal. With elevated banks boasting teakwood heritage houses and canal-side walkways, it really is a picturesque spot that feels like it hasn't changed all that much

over the past century. Unlike other floating markets that typically finish up by late morning, Amphawa's market operates from 12noon to 8:00pm Friday through Sunday. And in contrast to the exceptionally tourist-laden Damnoen Saduak floating markets a little further north – the atmosphere at Amphawa feels very local. Our experience this trip suggests Bangkok Thais do flock here to enjoy the food offerings of the town's famous floating market. We farang were definitely in the minority. Hundreds of vendors sell prepared foods and artsy souvenirs. Some on the walkways, footpaths and side stalls beside the canal and others from anchored boats within the klong itself. It feels like the market indeed overtakes the entire town; there are no clear lines as to where it begins and ends. It's a very photogenic scene and a phenomenal place to sample the area's food specialities.

Take the steep, rickety timber steps leading from the main walkways down to the water’s edge to sellers floating in their wooden sampans waiting to serve up their speciality. Whole steamed crabs, fried mackerel (a local speciality), and my favourites - grilled prawns, and som tam (Green Papaya salad) await. Unless you ask otherwise, it’s served on disposable plates ready to be eaten on the spot! Dining by the water, the sun going down, on delicious fresh cooked seafood for just 100 baht…it doesn’t get much better than that!

One of the market’s many draws is its endless spread of khanom or Thai sweets/snacks, which the town is known for. There's even a "Thai dessert museum" nearby. We wandered the banks frequently stopping to check-out what was on offer. The sweet sticky rice stuffed into 20-30 cm long pieces of bamboo and grilled (steamed) over coals was delicious. Also on offer - all manner of colourful treats made from rice flour, coconut, mung bean and more – many a little too bright and wobbly for my liking! The narrow walkways along the edge of the canal do seem to magnify the sense of crowds, yet it's easy to pop into a little coffee shop or eatery with comfortable seating for respite if feeling overwhelmed.

We discovered a tranquil garden just off the walkway – tables set under frangipani trees laden with sweet smelling flowers. An ideal spot to enjoy a late afternoon Iced Coffee. At the back of this peaceful garden, we also spotted a line of armchairs with footstools in front – Thai massage! Precisely what our weary feet and legs wanted. One hour of expert manipulation takes away all manner of pain, reviving us for more market wandering! If experiencing Amphawa from on the canals is your thing then for around 100 baht you can join a 45-minute tour on one of many long-tail sampans. Long timber flat bottom boats with a sharp bow and a more full stern where the motor and skipper are placed. Rows of timber planks across the slender sampan act as seating, often only fitting 2 or 3 people per row. A very traditional ‘on water’ experience taking you into the nearby canals and along a stretch of the Mae Khlong.

Our visit to Amphawa was fantastic and reinforced how lucky we are with so many new opportunities just waiting for us to get out and experience in this adventure and discovery-filled “Land of Smiles”!

hai hero Paradorn Srichaphan is bringing his highly respected Paradorn Tennis Academy to Hua Hin’s True Arena. Paradorn is extremely popular in Asia, especially in Thailand where he was the first men's singles player from Asia to be ranked in the top 10 of the ATP rankings, reaching a career high world no. 9. Srichaphan's breakout year came in 2002. He began the season ranked outside the top 100 and proceeded to make four ATP finals, winning two of them. He finished the season ranked No. 21 and earned the ATP's Most Improved and the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award for his wellliked personality. After his 2002 season, Srichaphan's profile soared. "I'm not just representing Thailand, my country,'' he said in August 2003. ''But I feel that I am representing all the Asian countries, especially in Asian tennis.'' "Paradorn Fever" immediately swept through Asia. In 2003 Time Magazine Asia put him on the cover,

labeled as an "Asian Hero." He was given an audience with the King of Thailand, an honor usually reserved for heads of state, and was issued a red diplomatic passport after being named a cultural ambassador by the Thailand Tourism Authority. In May 2003 Paradron cracked the top ten, where he would stay for ten weeks. In 2004 he carried Thailand’s flag in the opening ceremonies of Athens Olympic Games. Though he never made it past the fourth round of a Slam, two of his most notable wins were at Wimbledon. In 2002, he stunned third seed Andre Agassi in straight sets in the second round. A year later he defeated Rafael Nadal at a Slam, beating the 17-yearold, No. 76-ranked Spaniard, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in the third round. According to Paradorn, “Strong legs are very important in tennis, but at the same time players need to have strong muscles in the upper part of their bodies as well.” Paradorn has moved to Hua Hin and will participates in day to day activity, on and off court with the players and coaching team to make sure the Academy maintains the highest standard. Bumrungrad Health Briefs Technology Takes on Back Pain with New and Improved Spine Treatments One out of 10 people suffers chronic back or neck pain — the kind of pain that can severely impact a person’s life quality and make routine activities unbearable. Fortunately the past few decades have seen significant advances in surgical techniques and medical instrument technology, leading to dramatic improvements in back and spine treatments. Here is a look at the innovations that have had the biggest impact.

A look back at traditional open spine surgery Looking back 25 to 30 years, spine surgery was a very traumatic procedure involving hospital stays of one to two weeks and a long recovery at home. A typical spine surgery required large incisions of 10 to 20 centimeters. The surgeon would then clear a path for the repair by peeling back layers of muscle — a major physical trauma for patients. Blood loss was also significant — typically about one-and-a-half liters — so only patients in very good health could be surgery candidates.

Microscopes Innovations in surgical microscopes improved illumination and magnification, enabling surgeons to see better, closer, and more clearly — and when you see better, you can cut less. With the better microscopes, we were able to reduce incisions down to about three to five centimeters. That meant a lot less physical trauma to patients, greater safety, and more accurate surgery. And that really is the essence of “minimally invasive.”

Endoscopes A microscope provides a view from outside the body. The next phase of innovation revolved around the endoscope, which provides a view from inside the body. An endoscope is a thin 42

HOT Magazine

lighted tube that has a camera attached at the tip; through the tube we are able to insert tiny surgical instruments. Using an endoscope enabled us to reduce incisions to one centimeter or less, which means much less impact on surrounding muscle tissue and ligaments.

Computer-assisted 3D Navigation For patients who need reconstruction of the spine — perhaps due to vertebral collapse, or in the case of a loose joint that requires the insertion of a screw — with earlier techniques, it was quite common for patients to be very fearful about the possibility of the screw hitting a nerve instead of the bone. At Bumrungrad, we have been using a 3D computer-assisted navigation system for almost five years. The system produces detailed 3-dimensional images in real time, and the navigation component guides the screw to its precise intended location. Since adopting the system, we have been able to achieve an accuracy rate of up to 99.8 percent, and that rate is based on more than 3,000 screw insertions. That high level of accuracy represents a significant improvement from earlier generations of spine surgeries.

Mister National Thailand 2018

O

n July 28th, 2016, HOT Hua Hin Co. Ltd., the parent company of this magazine, presented their first Mister National Thailand pageant which was held in the grand ballroom of the Westin Grande Sukhumvit Hotel in Bangkok. Close to 400 people joined in the inaugural event including local, national and international media.

Twenty men competed for several titles and two of the winners from that night went on to win at International Pageants. The first was Narapat Sakunsong who won the title Mister Model International at the International pageant held in New Deli late in 2016. The second was Richard Riccardo who was crowned with the title Mister Universe Tourism at the International pageant held in Manila

in 2017. Other winners from the 2016 pageant placed in high “Runner Up positions at other international pageants. On March 2nd of this year, HOT Hua Hin Co. Ltd., produced their second Mister National Thailand pageant which was once again held in the grand ballroom of the Westin Grande Sukhumvit Hotel in Bangkok.

Twenty men competed for two main titles; Mister National Thailand 2018 & Mister Universe Tourism Thailand 2018. Well-known Thai celebrity, socialite and businesswoman Khun Sumanee Guna Kasem continued in her post as Honorary Chairwoman of the event and once again spoke to the audience prior to the start of the competition. Six judges oversaw the competition which included prominent Associate

Professor Dr. Seri Wongmonta, mass communication specialist, Mr.Narong Anurak, Arts and Culture Editor for TNN 24 News Television Station, Khun Suwaphit Wongapirit, CEO of CERESA, Khun Thanyasa Tajinda, Chief Business Development Officer at ALTITUDE Model Bangkok, Khun Pavarisa TungApiwattana, Managing Director of PBS Fashion Co., Ltd. (Police Brand) & Khun Arthit “SeaGame Mekarkard,

Mister National Thailand 2016. Similar in scope and style as the much more well-known female beauty contests, the Mr. National Thailand competition started with a runway parade where each candidate was introduced with all dressed in casual sportswear. The catcalls from the women in the audience went into a high fever pitch as the men next came out in their swimsuits.

HOT Magazine

45

The evening was filled with Déjà vu as one of the many highlights of the night came when Mr. Wichaya “Tack” Wongsuriyan from the Voice Thailand came out next and performed for the crowd, as he did in 2016, singing several songs. One of the major tenants of the pageant was that contestants must speak English well and present themselves with confidence, as they will be representing the Kingdom of Thailand to an international stage in the coming year. Their English skills were put to the test when the judges and audience got to hear each contestant introduce themselves and speak to this years talking point, “Be Proud, Be You.” It was then time for the Judges to go to work and narrow the field from 20 to 10 Candidates. Once done, the 10 contestants were brought back on stage and each asked a different question that they had to immediately answer off the top of their head. And with that it was time for the judges to go to work and decide who the winners would be.

I am looking forward to seeing their personal growth in the coming year and beyond.” Tanya went on to say, “In planning and producing this event there was a tremendous amount of pressure on all of us, the organizers and the contestants. T

o visit the Royal Resort City of Hua Hin is in itself a fantastic experience but to stay in a beautiful resort while you do it is that much greater. This month, HOT Magazine had the pleasure of visiting one of Hua Hin’s newest resorts, the AVANI Hua Hin Resort and Villas. The AVANI brand is relatively new with its start in just 2012 and is the brainchild of Bill Heinecke, CEO and Chairman of Minor International, and Dillip Rajakarier, CEO of Minor Hotel Group. AVANI draws upon Minor’s expertise in Asian hospitality

and following the brand’s initial two openings in Sri Lanka it has grown to 23 properties across 15 countries. The AVANI Hua Hin, like all AVANI’s, is a modern contemporary upscale hotel that places a premium on a genuine welcome and a flawless stay, no matter what the guest’s requirements are. Multiple dining venues await you here including an Italian fine dining beachfront restaurant. The 196 room property offers five different room types, all of which merit a distinction of their own.

The standard room is the AVANI Deluxe Room, which is ample at 33 square metres and gets frequent breezes running through. The natural light shines in all day and it sports a fantastic combination of wood and modern finishing. It is perfect for a small family, say a couple and a child. The room has a private balcony and is ideal to sit out and sunbathe or the admire the beautiful evening views. Guests have a choice between king size beds and or twin beds and there’s a flat-screen television with satellite. Rooms can be connected on request and WiFi is free throughout the resort.

Then comes the AVANI Deluxe Jacuzzi Room. It is called that because it has private jacuzzi access which allows guests private access to step out straight into the luxurious jacuzzi. A lovely patio makes this rooms special, ideal for those who wish to be with a special someone for the entirety of the stay and treat them to great times. The room is decorated with tones of sandy colour which make the perfect reminder of the beach – walking in is like stepping out. If you’re more of a swimming pool person there’s the AVANI Deluxe Pool Access Room one can sample. Jumping in and out of the water all day knowing your burrow is a step or two away is incredibly convenient for those who either love the pool or those with children who do. If you like the vibe

but prefer to stay dry, the balcony is a good place to get one’s tan on. The room’s decoration is in tones of blue, very soothing for those who enjoy nice cool colours. For those times when more space is needed there is the AVANI Garden View suite which is perfect for a small family whose child has the tendency to run around as its sized at 72 square meters. The greenery one is surrounded by in this room is nothing short of relaxing, allowing those who need a break from the city life to find it right inside their living quarters. Of course, there are garden people and water people. For the latter, the AVANI Pool Access Suite is always one of the soundest choices. Stepping out of this room might land you in some

water, as the swimming pool is so close guests can step out at a moment’s notice for the perfect dip. Sometimes though, one is in need of a spacious place – more spacious than a suite. In that case, the hotel offers both One and Two Bedroom Villas. Both bedroom types offer either private pools or lagoon pool access. The AVANI One Bedroom private villas are spacious at 188 sqm’s and sleep 2 adults + a child. The AVANI Two Bedroom villas are extremely spacious at 268 sqm’s and can sleep 5 adults or 4 adults and + 2 children. Of course, if you are the type who appreciates the finest things in life, then you’ll want to check-in to the AVANI Two Bedroom Beachfront Villa with private pool and fantastic ocean views.

When staying in the Villas you receive complimentary access to the AVANICLUB Executive Lounge, which makes the experience of guests all the fancier, with a more relaxed breakfast, afternoon tea for two, cocktails when the sun starts setting and a host of other amenities. As mentioned earlier, restaurants abound here, starting with their all day restaurant called Staa’s. Staa’s is where you come for the breakfast buffets which include a variety of cooking stations as well as a large array of continental and Thai courses. Staa’s lunch and dinner menu stands out for its large range of food which sees everything from grilled sea food to curries and salads, even pastas and pizzas. But for a better pasta and pizza experience the ideal place is Brezza. This restaurant will serve you fine Italian dining on the beachfront, granting stunning views alongside a bountiful meal. The AVANI’s pantry offers deluxe signature bites and fresh food, from

coffee and a variety of breads to more elaborate paninis that one can take with at any time. Pastries and bakery will delight those with a sweet tooth. Blue Biscuit is AVANI’s Jazz club and a must to check out. In addition to great Jazzy-Blue’zy music, you’ll find a large selection of drinks; from the finest Cuban selection of rum to the best Irish whisky. The Blue Biscuit also offers casual dining with a tinge of Creole inspiration. The saxophone is full on by the time the evening sets in and creates a magnificent vibe. If relaxation for you comes in the form of a spa visit, try out the one at the hotel. It features nine treatment rooms, including two couple’s treatment rooms and an Hammam where you can enjoy a hot steam bath followed by a massage. Two signature types of massage are offered. “The Signature Touch” for a perfect rejuvenating hour of bliss and the skin caring “Richly Rhassoul Ritual” which is the ultimate pampering for your skin.

The AVANI Resort is also kid friendly. Finally, the AVANI Hua Hin Resort is the ultimate business destination boasting the largest ballroom in Hua Hin. Perfect for large corporate events or multiple smaller business meetings. Wedding’s are also very popular here as it is a dream location to share one’s nuptials with family and friends. As a whole, the AVANI Hua Hin Resort and Villas is one of the soundest options one can pick if Hua Hin is their destination and a relaxed time, events to celebrate or big business presentations are in order. 2018 King's Cup Elephant Polo Raises a Trunkload of Cash for Elephant Charities 64

The 2018 King's Cup Elephant Polo tournament combined four action packed days of fun, with players flying in from around the world. There were all kinds of participants. The most famed were perhaps the former New Zealand All Blacks rugby players, who on Saturday performed their famous Hakka prior to one of their matches. The team would eventually reach the final, where they met the Mekhong team. Who would win? It would be a close call. Festivities kicked off on Thursday March 8th on the polo pitch located on the banks of Bangkok’s River of Kings, the mighty Chao Phraya. The early morning proceedings began with a traditional blessing ceremony with monks placing sacred garlands over the necks of the stars of the event, the exstreet elephants taking part. Thailand’s last elephant spirit men (Kru Ba Yai), who possess spiritual control over all of Thailand’s elephants, also presided over the early morning rituals. The opening day was attended by players and media from all over the world along with over 600 school children who were treated to a day of educational activities relating to Thailand’s national animal. The children were almost as delighted as the elephants during the much loved elephant breakfast buffet and many hands fed them bananas, sugar cane and pumpkin ahead of the first game.

The match of the day was between Johnnie Walker Blue Label captained by Thailand’s Elephant Polo President, Christopher Stafford and King’s Cup debutants, ‘Challenge Everything’ from New York, captained by David Partridge. The first chukka ended with Challenge Everything ahead by a nail biting 3-0. By the end of the second chukka, seasoned veterans Johnnie Walker Blue Label made a stunning comeback due to the outstanding prowess of player Bjorn Richardson, scoring five goals in a row, securing a victory of 5-3. The weather Gods must not have gotten the memo because Friday morning saw a massive rain storm roll thru Bangkok, striking down on the purpose-built polo pitch near the Anantara Riverside Hotel. Although the storm did not last long, it was long enough to completely soak the pitch, making it unsafe for the Pachyderms to play so all polo matches were cancelled for the day. The grounds team brought in large industrial pumps and worked throughout the day and night to clear the water from the field in the hopes that the games could start again on Saturday morning. Day 3 started in much brighter, and dryer spirits as the glamourous crowds turned out in style for ‘Ladies Day, also known as Bangkok’s Ascot. The polo grounds were filled with celebrities, socialites and many well-heeled Bangkok residents.

The day began with a tense penalty shootout to accommodate for the previous day of missed play allowing all the teams to practice their shooting and get familiar with the pitch. The best dressed ladies of the day joined a sensational Masquerade Ball themed show on the pitch while the judges decided who would win the best dressed prize. The lucky winner received an all-expense paid 4-night trip to the Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort in Oman with flights courtesy of Oman Air. Throughout the four-day spectacle there was a bustling environment of vibrant booths, with tents on either side of the pitch and a large array of different types of food and drinks which made for a lovely occasion. There were varieties of Chinese, Japanese, Italian and Thai food, making this event a truly international feast. Restaurants such as rooftop bar Cielo provided their sybarite variety while entertainers from places such as Ripley's Believe It or Not! were there to bring fun to the children and those with a more free spirited mind, as jugglers and ball games kept them good company. In addition to the Anantara Hotel chain as the main sponsor, the event was also sponsored by companies such as Casillero del Diablo, Ferrari Spumante, Chang and Johnnie Walker, all of whom provided a large array of beverages, from black label whisky and red and white wines to bubbly sparkling wines and – of course – elephant branded beer.

The fun and games however did have a purpose, as the funds received from the event went to fund elephant conservation foundations, including the Zoological Parks Organization of Thailand which supports veterinary and educational projects to improve the year-round lives of elephants and mahouts in the Surin Province where exstreet elephants face ongoing hardship. The entire tournament across the four days raised a whopping 4 million baht – a staggering amount if you consider that polo was mostly absent due to the unfortunate rain showers during the second day of the tournament. The total

raised since the tournaments inception has reached almost U.S. 1.7 million dollars. The Thai Elephant Therapy project and the Chiang Mai University Department of Occupational Therapy also benefited from the funds. The former bringing further budget to fund conservation projects, while the latter showed that humans in need also benefit from the charity event, as it sponsors initiatives for children with Down’s syndrome. The final match on Sunday saw the Mekhong team, comprised of the talented Kalaan brothers, Uday and Angad, along with Cameron

Humphries, competing against team PWC New Zealand All Blacks which featured international rugby stars Robin Brooke, Steve McDowall and Olo Brown. It was a close call that had to go all the way to the sudden death, but after thirteen rounds of shots – what it took the victors to seal the deal – team Mekhong prevailed over team PWC New Zealand. The final match was attended by a representative of His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn, His Excellency Privy Councilor Air Chief Marshal Chalit Pukbhasuk who presented the King’s Cup Trophy to the victors.

The final results saw from the bottom up teams Italia, Pelago Luxury, IBM, Challenge Everything, Angus, Casillero del Diablo, JW Blue Label, King Power, PWC New Zealand All Blacks and Mekhong. All in all, the four-day tournament wasn't hampered in vibe by the rain, which remained an anecdote, given that fun was had, money was raised, excitement prevailed and it all went for a charitable cause. Next year aims to be much more exciting, in the hopes that play will resume again and teams will be able to take to the field in exciting action packed games, with greater sums of money raised and even more fun times to be had.
