Dear Reader Welcome to Issue 4, Volume 5 of HOT Magazine. There is a famous verse inscribed on a stone tablet in Gilgit, Pakistan, next to a polo pitch, that reads "Let others play at other things. The king of games is still the game of kings." That game being referred to is Polo and this month’s issue is filled with it. We start out by taking you to the 2017 Asian Beach Polo Championship that was held once again in front of the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort. In its 8th year, this annual competition is a Charity event benefitting the Nabha Foundation, a charitable organization under the initiative of HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha. One of Hua Hin’s most anticipated yearly social events, it featured Polo during the day, along with other festivities and wrapped up with a cocktail dinner and show at the InterContinental’s Blu Port Wing. Check out who was there and which country took home the trophy on page 18. Not done with Polo yet, further into the issue we take you to the 15th annual Anantara King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament which was held in Bangkok from March 9th thru the 12th. Forty Polo players from around the world converged on Bangkok for this mammoth spectacle. Played on a purpose-built pitch, next to the Chao Phraya River, this four-day tournament had it all, sport, children, glamour, celebrities and non-stop action. Also a charity event, this year’s tournament saw over 4 million baht raised for the betterment of Thailand’s domestic and wild Pachyderms with an impressive 50 million baht raised since the tournament’s inception. Check out all 4 days of action on page 54. From sport to music, we next take you to the first True Jazz Festival at Hua Hin, hosted by Hua Hin’s True Arena. The two-day festival ran from March 24th to the 25th and saw Grammy award winning artists along with many other high caliber performers. Thoroughly enjoyed by those in attendance, it is hopefully the first of many more yearly Jazz Festivals in Hua Hin’s future. Get your groove on and turn to page 38 for pictures and text. The Marriott Hotel group owns and or operates over 4,500 hotels and resorts around the world. Out of that large number only 8 can call themselves a “Marriott “Marquis Hotel.” To be named a Marquis hotel you not only have to be luxurious, you also have to be big, with over 1,000 rooms. The very first Marriott Marquis Hotel to open in Asia Pacific did so a few months ago in Bankgok. Last month we took you their Goji Kitchen + Bar which is located within the property. This month we feature the hotel itself in our monthly “Let’s Stay” column. Grab your key card, turn to page 44 and stay a while. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find in this month’s issue. As always, thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

TWO MAESTRO'S ORCHESTRATE AN AMAZING WINE DINNER AT MARRIOT'S BIG FISH On Friday March 31st Mr. Hugo Casanova, Managing Director of Chile’s Hugo Casanova winery, visited Hua Hin to present a collection of his wines to a very appreciative group of diners at the Marriott’s beachfront restaurant, Big Fish & Bar. Working in collaboration with the Marriott’s Executive Chef, Mario Hoffman, the two maestro’s orchestrated a dinner that was memorable indeed. Mario is highly talented, having worked at some of the finest 5 start hotels around the world. In 2006 he was the Head Chef for Banquet and Catering at the Hotel Adlon Kempinski in Berlin. Situated in Pariser Platz Square, Hotel Adlon Kempinski is very near the most

well-known landmark in Berlin, the Brandenburg Gate. As such he has prepared meals for some of the world’s most powerful leaders when visiting the country. On this evening, Mario started our dining experience with Zucchini Mille Feulle and Rock Salt. Looking more like a desert than a starter it was wonderfully paired with a Hugo Casanova Reserva Sauvignon Blanc Maule Valley. Other dishes coming out of Marrio’s kitchen included his Black Tiger Prawn Ravioli with Macadamia Nut Dressing, 24 hour Sous Vide Pork Belly served with light pumpkin mash and the main entrée consisted of a Wagyu Tenderloin with

Cauliflower Cream and Truffle Nage. Desert was no less satisfying, especially for a chocoholic like myself and included Chocolate, Hazelnut and Pineapple sweets. Additional Hugo Chavez Wines accompanying the courses served included their Reserva Chardonnay, Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon, Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon Syrah and their Hugo Casanova Don Aldo Blend Premium. A terrifically delightful evening and one you deserve to experience yourself at the next Marriott wine dinner.

HOT AROUND HUA HIN CHARITY HUA HIN BRINGS 9 YEAR OLD SOM-OH TO VISIT EDWIN WIEK AND HIS ANIMALS FRIENDS AT WFFT Charity Hua Hin’s Vincent Kerreman and lovely Lizzy together with founder Edwin Wiek from Wild Life Friends Foundation created a wonderful day for handicapped 9 year old Som—Oh at WFFT. Som-Oh one of the patients of Charity Hua Hin, has many medical issues and lives permanently in a hospital ward after he was abandoned when his parents realized how sick their newborn was. He is loved and cared for by nurses and doctors but seldom gets to leave the hospital, so this day was a real treat for him. Once Edwin Wiek learned about SomOh existence he immediately invited him to come to his Wildlife Friends Foundation in Petchaburi province as a special outing. First Som-Oh’s doctor had to give medical thumbs up for the outing, but once he had one Som-Oh could go to see wildlife accompanied by his caretaker Khun Aom and with his own donated wheelchair. Som-Oh who is very clever and outgoing despite his medical issues was very excited to see the animals especially getting to feed a large elephant names Somboon. Som-Oh was treated like a

MONK BLESSING AT RESCUE PAWS On Wednesday morning 5 April, Rescue Paws hosted the monks of Wat Khao Tao to signify the inauguration of their new dog kennels with a monk blessing ceremony. After years of housing hundreds of rescued animals, in the last days of 2016, the original kennel structure finally succumbed to the wear and tear of paws and claws. Having reached a point beyond repair, nothing more could be done to avoid the inevitable drastic step of a complete overhaul. Fortunately, thanks to the kindhearted generosity of their supporters, Rescue Paws was able to reconstruct their kennel facility literally from the ground up in just a matter of weeks, and all rescue efforts could be recommenced without significant delay or disruption. The ceremony marks an exciting, new chapter for Rescue Paws and the numerous dogs in their care, whilst also commemorating the souls that have each played part in their journey thus far. When asked about the significance

of the monk blessing ceremony for Rescue Paws, Operations Manager Hanli Engelbrecht replied, “Today’s blessing reflects the deepening sense of commitment and determination in the community to the Rescue Paws cause. On the strength of growing support, we look forward to making even greater strides to help the countless suffering animals around us”.

L et’s Meet, Michael Janssen cultures, to learn and to adapt. Indeed, learning and adapting are fundamental aspects of my job. What do you like least about your profession? Again, a great advantage of my profession is the chance to live and work throughout the world. But the flip side of the coin is that at some point we must say good bye to the people we’ve worked with and with whom we’ve become friends. That’s probably the hardest part of my job. What do you like most about Hua Hin? What I like most about Hua Hin is having access to many big-city advantages yet in a relaxed coastal resort community. For instance shopping malls, great restaurants, facilities such as True Arena Fitness and so much more. And with Bangkok so nearby, you can easily have an actual big-city experience any time you like. What is your favorite restaurant and why? (Please don’t promote your own restaurants) I have not tried many restaurants in Hua Hin yet, but I have one favorite place already, Tsukemen Jo. It’s in BluPort Mall and they serve great ramen noodles. I go there often for lunch with my wife, who’s Japanese, and she agrees their ramen is great.

What is your full name and age? My name is Michael Janssen and I’m 44 years old. What is your current Job Position? I am the general manager of luxury resort InterContinental Hua Hin Resort. How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? I have been to Hua Hin many times on holiday. As for living here, though, this is my first time and it’s been only two months. What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? Further to the above, I knew about Hua Hin primarily because of InterContinental Hua Hin Resort, which is where I stayed when visiting here on holiday. Honestly, staying at the resort was a fantastic way to learn about Hua Hin. It’s very much a part of the 16

HOT Magazine

community here. It’s great for visitors who arrive to attend one of the area’s major music or sport events as well as for anyone who wants to know what to do and where to go. Just steps away you can stroll along the beach or browse in a world-class shopping mall. I also found that the resort staff’s welcoming Thai hospitality fully reflected the genuine friendliness of Hua Hin residents. What do you like most about your profession? Many years ago I chose this profession because I wanted to interact with guests and to make them happy. Essentially, that hasn’t changed, although my specific responsibilities have changed since becoming a general manager. Everything I and my team do is centered on guest satisfaction, and achieving that is what I enjoy the most. I also embrace the opportunity to be immersed in different

What do you like to do in your free time and why? During my free time I enjoy a good run, usually in the early morning. Cooking a good meal (when I have time) likewise is a great way to relax and to spend time with friends and family. Also, the other day my wife and I were walking along the beach and saw kite surfers in action, so that’s something else I plan to try. What would you recommend newcomers do in Hua Hin and why? Well, I am still a newcomer myself, but what I did when I first arrived in Hua Hin was go to Vana Nava water park. I definitely recommend it for newcomers. It’s great fun! Other than that, an enjoyable way to explore Hua Hin is just to drive around and walk along the beach. You’ll always find something interesting to see and do. And while you’re exploring, you can always take a break at one of Hua Hin’s many cafés and restaurants. You’re sure to find a favorite.

P

olo is arguably the oldest recorded team sport in known history, with the first matches being played in Persia over 2,500 years ago. Initially thought to have been created by competing tribes of Central Asia, it was quickly taken up as a training method for the King’s elite cavalry. These matches could resemble a battle with up to 100 men to a side. As mounted armies swept back and forth across this part of the world, conquering and re-conquering, polo was adopted as the most noble of pastimes by the Kings and Emperors, Shahs and Sultans, Khans and Caliphs of the ancient Persians, Arabs, Mughals, Mongols and Chinese. It was for this reason it became known across the lands as "the game of kings". Polo continues, as it has done for so long, to represent the pinnacle of sport, and reaffirms the special bond between horse and rider. The feeling of many of its players are epitomized by a famous verse inscribed on a stone tablet next to a polo ground in Gilgit, Pakistan: "Let others play at other things. The king of games is still the game of kings." American Actor Sylvester Stallone once said that playing polo is like trying to play golf during an earthquake. I don’t think he would have found it any easier playing polo on sand, as they did on Saturday April 1st in front of the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort. On a beautiful sunny day, the 8th annual Asian Beach Polo Championship took place, once again benefitting the Nabha Foundation under the initiative of HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha. As in years past, this year’s event was organized by His Excellency Mr. Suwat Liptapanlop, Former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, Mr. Harald Link, Chairman of B.Grimm Group and the President of the Thailand Equestrian Federation, Khun Nunthenee Tanner, M.D. of LBG Limited and also regarded as Thailand’s first female polo player and Miss Proudputh Liptapanlop, Executive Director of Proud Real Estate Co., Ltd, the main sponsor. Dr. Harald Link, was the first person to initiate playing beach polo in Thailand and had this to say, “This Asian Beach Polo tournament reflects the potential of Thailand in hosting international beach polo events as well as promote Hua Hin and the kingdom tourism among tourists and spectators. Proceeds from the event go to the Nabha Foundation under the initiative of HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha to support the under privileges to live in social harmony. For this beach polo event, a small polo rubber ball was used in place of a regular polo ball to suit the surface of the field which is on the sandy beach. However, the rules

and regulations are still based on international standard. This year, there were 3 international teams participating in the competition; the Thai Polo Team led by Nara Ketusingha, Secretary General Thailand Equestrian Federation, Germany Team and Belgium Team. The final saw Thailand facing Germany to win HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha trophy.” For many Hua Hin residents, the Asian Beach Polo Championship has become a yearly tradition and the highlight of Hua Hin’s social scene. It is also a very popular happening for Bangkok’s High Society crowd with plenty of the rich and famous in attendance. Just a few included, Adisak - Siriporn Panupong, Monlada Pongpanit, Uraiporn Chalermsaphayakorn, Chayada-Kritphol Svetanandana, Ploychompu Umpujh, Melanie Sirachindabhirom, Pimlaor - Pimpan Pokaiudom, Suppamas-Jirapha Laksanawisit & Nasha Jungkankul. The full day of fun started at noon with the gates opening, the food and drinks being served and the socializing beginning amongst friends new and old. At 1pm the familiar site of the horse parade heading down the beach towards the podium was enjoyed followed by the welcoming speeches. New to this year’s event was barrel racing, which was more than entertaining as it looked like it was also new to the horses participating. The ponies were plucked from the beach horses who are used to taking tourists up and down the beach, in a straight line, whereas racing around barrels was an entirely new concept. The Polo final was moved up in time due to a rising tide and saw the Thailand team facing Germany. In the first Chukka Thailand was strong, dominating Germany. It didn’t help either that Thailand had an extra half point as a handicap. The 2nd Chukka saw a much closer match and by the final 3rd Chukka it was Germany who dominated and took the Championship with a score of Germany 6, to Thailand’s 4.5 points. Later in the day the very popular horse racing contest and the beach fashion show took place. This year saw leading Thai celebrities transforming the beach into a runway with models clad in Ralph Lauren. A “Victorian Night” was the theme for the evening portion of the program which was hosted at the InterContinental’s Blu Port Wing Ballroom. The Victorian theme reflected the luxury lifestyle that is in line with the sport of beach polo, popular among the elites, along with ballet and dance performances. The evening ended with the auctioning of artistic custom made polo mallets and a carved statue of a horse which saw the Nabha Foundation as the benefactor. The Asian Beach Polo Championship is one of the really fun annual events in Hua Hin. If you didn’t make it this year, be sure and put it on your social calendar for 2018.

TRUE ARENA NEWS Every tennis player fails at some point, and it is so important how to recover. Analyze your failure and prepare better for next time. Learning from losses is what makes you stronger. We can provide our best effort in everything and still enjoy ourselves.

TENNIS FOR LIFE HUA HIN We can all take some Tennis lessons and apply the knowledge to real life. Here are some of my favorite life lessons that I have learned through 31 years playing tennis: You can always turn any situation in your favor. You could be down 0-6; 0-5 and 0-40 and win the match. Winning a match like this will always be more satisfactory than winning playing amazing.

It is so important to have goals. When you reach one celebrate and move on to the next one. This will help you staying humble and hungry. Even the best players in the world have an off day. Nobody is perfect, we cannot keep the same level at all times. Try to be better every day. Always look for ways to improve yourself and keep learning. A role model for me was Mr. Simon. He was 78 years old, one of the most successful doctors in the world, very fit and had a fantastic attitude. He used to play 2 hours per day with me, 5

days a week. His philosophy in life is to try get a bit better every day. Hard work always beat talent. “There is no way around the hard work. Embrace it” Roger Federer. COMBAT CONDITIONING FOR SPORTS Rugby and Football players training in combat sports? It may seem odd and the connection may not be readily apparent, but Rugby, Football and MMA have many parallels. Some movements vital to mixed martial arts are of great benefit to many professional athletes or fitness enthusiast looking to gain an advantage or compliment their chosen sport. Exactly what do athletes have to gain from incorporating MMA training?

BETTER CONDITIONING A good strength and conditioning program plays a significant role in training every successful sports team. The best coaches are constantly innovating, researching, and programming, as well as trying to find creative ways to keep athletes fit and motivated. Most athletes have done ladder drills, cone drills, fieldwork, and traditional weightlifting exercises since their high school or collegiate days. MMA training, particularly mitt work, heavy bag work, and wrestling, are tremendous conditioning protocols outside of conventional training. Punching allows athletes to hit explosively in a safe environment, which helps them melt away calories as well

as stress. Wrestling allows players to work with constant resistance and real pressure with minimal risk of injury, while simultaneously improving their overall fitness. Depending on an athlete’s individual needs and position, the conditioning can be easily made aerobic, anaerobic, or some combination of the two. Although the average play in most sports is only around six seconds and accompanied by several rest intervals in between play and possessions, this series is repeated many times in a match. Thus, athletes must be able to perform in short bursts for many repetitions.

INCREASED BODY AWARENESS Learning to engage the entire body for maximum power, efficiency, and explosiveness is immensely important in most contact sports. A player who engages with his entire body, instead of isolating individual body parts, has a distinct advantage in power, efficiency, and long-term sustainability. Striking drills teach athletes to coordinate their legs, hips and core, as well as their upper bodies—ultimately making them more powerful and versatile.

TACTILE SENSITIVITY This is where wrestling takes over in the program. For the purposes of fighting and general contact sports, there are two energies: the opponent can push or pull; there is nothing else. The more time you spend working with real resistance and pressure (wrestling), the more prepared you are to feel that energy in real time. The energy must be felt. If it is "seen," it is too late, because it has already reached completion (or close enough). If it is "felt," the athlete still has time to respond and gain an advantage. True Arena will soon be offering a variety of MMA, Muay Thai and Combat Conditioning programs soon. Group classes and private training will cover both professional and beginner athletes.

he weekend of March 24th & 25th saw the inaugural True Jazz Festival at Hua Hin. Fifty famous international artists, including a winner of 10 Grammy awards, and a number of leading Thai artists performed on stage to the delight of the appreciative crowds. Festival goers have The Agency Co., Ltd., True Arena Hua Hin, and the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort

to thank for their strong support in sponsoring the music fest. Over 10 million baht was spent by the True Arena Hua Hin Sport Complex to build the large, international standard concert stage and vast playground especially for this festival. The first notes kicking off the Jazz Festival were played by the Bangkok Brass Band, a new-age group of artists with a groove rhythm, that got the

audience dancing from the beginning. The Thailand All-Stars Jazz Orchestra were up next. The master jazz band was conducted by Dr. Den Yuprasert. The audience was yelling loudly and appreciatively when Thanachai Ujjin, also known as Pod Modern Dog came out to sing many of his top singles, such as “Rak Khun Kao Laew”, “Busaba” and others.

Cory Henry and The Funk Apostles

Eighty-eight year old, legendary Jazz artist Benny Golson was up next along with his quartet. Benny is the only living jazz artist who has composed 8 famous jazz songs which have become jazz standards and been re-recorded many times. The crowd was treated to Benny’s “Killer Joe”, “I Remember Clifford”, “Along Came Betty” and many more. Benny has recorded 30 popular albums with over 300 songs.

The Jazz man has always been famous with Jazz aficionados but he became mainstream famous when he played a part in the 2004 Steven Spielberg movie “The Terminal” with Tom Hanks. Tom’s character “Viktor Navorski” from the nation of “Krakozia” flies to New York City just to get Benny Golson’s autograph. Koh-Mr. Saxman, a famous Thai sax man was honored to play later in the set with Benny & his Quartet,

representing an east-meets-west music cooperation that knew no boundaries. Wrapping up his set, Benny gave an impassioned speech praising the great ability of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, and respectfully played the King’s song “A Love Story”. That act brought tremendous gratitude and happiness to everyone who had the pleasure of being there.

The Yellowjackets Day one of the True Jazz Festival at Hua Hin was wrapped up with the band Cory Henry and The Funk Apostles. As one of the best Hammond Organ b3 bands and the owners of Grammy Awards in both the Best R&B Performance and Best Contemporary Instrumental Album categories, the band set the stage on fire with their unparalleled performance skills for over 2 hours. Afterwards fans had the opportunity to take photos with artists, ending the day with a memorable moment for everyone. Day two began with the exotic vocals and instrumentals of the Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band. Acclaimed by the BBC, the band has played to fans at the Glastonbury Festival in UK and many more stages throughout Europe. Their set concluded, it was the Yellowjackets who next took to the stage. This “Legend of Fusion Jazz” band has won 2 Grammy Awards. Their many world tours are almost always sell-outs, winning praises from critics around the globe. Next, the music took a down beat and slowed for Thailand’s #1 soul band, Soul After Six. A fan favorite they are the owners of the top hit single “Konhin Lamoe”, and performed many of their best songs for this special night. And then, the energy level of the crowd rose to an inter-stellar high as the final act of the night, Al Mckay's Earth Wind And Fire Experience rocketed to the stage. Al MaKay, the legendary guitar soloist and one of the founders of the 70’s Superstar rock group Earth, Wind & Fire, has won 6 Grammy Awards and an honorable Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. Their first time performing in the Kingdom, Al flew in his All-Star band from Los Angeles and they brought the house down with their crowd clapping, sing-a-long favourites such as “September”, “Boogie Wonderland” and “After The Love Has Gone”, cementing Al’s designation of “True Music Legend”. The True Jazz Festival at Hua Hin brought top tier Grammy Award winning artists to music lovers for the first time in town. With overwhelming great feedback from all parties, the event truly underpinned Hua Hin as the new destination in Thailand for world music events.

he Marriott, has over 4,500 hotels & Resorts that it either owns or manages around the world but only eight of them have the privilege to be called a “Marriott Marquis Hotel”. To be a Marquis hotel, the premises not only have to be luxurious, they must also be of a certain size, larger than life, with over 1,000 rooms and great meeting & banquet facilities that can accommodate large groups of people. The Marriott Marquis Bangkok Queen’s Park Hotel has over 1,300 hotel rooms and is the very first Marquis hotel in South East Asia. The nearest Marriott Marquis previously was in Dubai. The Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park welcomes both business and leisure guests with 5-star hotel rooms and suites and a truly unparalleled location in what is known as the EM District, near the city's most celebrated shopping, dining and nightlife attractions. South East Asia’s very first Marriott Marquis hotel, features rooms with modern Thai-inspired design elements, mesmerizing panoramic views of Bangkok’s city centre and a vast assortment of 5-star amenities. The hotel offers 7 different room categories; Deluxe, Deluxe Park View & M Club are all 32 square meters in size, with the M Club room coming with club floor benefits. Larger suites include the 1 bedroom M Suite and the Family suite which both give you 72 square meters of space. The Grand Marquis Suite is also one bedroom but gives you 128 square meters to wander around in, and then there is the Sky Suite, at a jaw dropping 750 square meters in size, however you will have to wait until June or later to book it. We had the pleasure of staying in one of their M Suite’s, which at 72 square meters was plenty of room for the two of us. It had a spacious sized living room/ lounge, a very comfortable separate bedroom with an even more comfortable king size bed and a large bathroom with shower and separate bathtub. The Suite came with club floor benefits which included the usual amenities but what stood out was their evening Happy Hour. Here, it lasted four hours instead of the usual two and included cocktails as well as sparkling wine and different red’s and white’s. The hotel is owned by the Chang Beer family so it was only natural that Chang would be the featured beer. The Bangkok Marquis also showcases a stunning range of on-site restaurant options to make life easy for guests who are in a rush or who may not want to step out of the hotel for a bite to eat. The five on-site restaurants are varied and of high quality. Firstly, there is the Goji Kitchen and Bar which we reviewed last month. Goji is the main breakfast restaurant and is also open for lunch and dinner. You can order ala carte’ but I recommend you opt for either their lunch or dinner international buffet. Both are outstanding and filled with too many delicious items to count. Another in-house restaurant offering international dishes is the Lobby Lounge, the perfect place to reconnect with friends, family or colleagues after a day of excitement in Bangkok. The restaurant also features specialty cocktails, coffee, tea and light international dining options in a friendly and inviting atmosphere.

If western cuisine is not what you came for, the Bangkok Marquis also has The Pagoda, a Chinese restaurant that allows guests to embark on culinary journeys never to be forgotten. The award-winning chef of The Pagoda, Chef Oscar Pun is a native of Hong Kong. Chef Oscar has spent more than two decades perfecting the elegant art of Cantonese cookery, including spells in renowned five-star hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants. In 2011 he transferred to the luxurious Kempinski Hotel in Beijing as Executive Chinese Chef, overseeing a 300-seat restaurant and extravagant banquets in the vast ballroom. Following spells at two other major hotels - Macau's City of Dreams and Beijing's Shangri-La Kerry Hotel - Chef Oscar has now arrived at the Pagoda and is ready to delight diners with his impressive Chinese culinary creations. Another excellent eatery at the hotel is the Soba Factory. The Soba Factory offers one of the best Japanese dining experiences in the city, feature a diverse menu boasting of a wide assortment of inventive Japanese dishes in the comfort of a sleek, modern restaurant setting. Not to be forgotten is the local cuisine, which is why the Bangkok Marquis has the Siam Tea Room where guests can enjoy a taste of Bangkok through the taste of traditional Thai dishes, teas, pastries and lots more.

The gastronomy a hotel offers is one of the most important aspects of a hotel, but the entertainment features must not be forgotten either. The Marriott Marquis Bangkok has a lot to offer to make guests feel at home and comfortable while in their journeys in South East Asia. Some of its main attractions are the revitalizing signature Quan spa, which requires to set an appointment as it is in high demand amongst guests. The hotel also has several outdoor pools where one can enjoy the rays of the Thai sun as well as views of the modern concrete jungle. The hotel also boasts an extremely well-equipped gym which ensures guests can keep fit and fresh during their stay. As much as the hotel is a holiday hotel, it is also most certainly a business hotel too. The Marriott Marquis was designed with 37 event rooms encompassing almost 6,500 square metres of venue space at the heart of Bangkok’s city centre. The largest meeting room seats up to 1,100 people, offering state-of-the-art event planning and catering services. Even the biggest of Indian Weddings can be accommodated here. Himmapan Avatar's Grand Opening in Bangkok

here is said to be a fabled forest that surrounds the mythological Mount Meru – the sacred mountain of five peaks so central to Hindu legends. Enchanted and bustling with all types of mystical creatures of legendary legacies, the Himavanta forest – known in Thai folklore as Himmapan – is said to be the host of a range of beasts, starting with the powerful and feared Naga snake, to the national symbol of Thailand: the Garuda. There too is said to grow the Nariphon tree, a leafy legend which according to myth bears its fruit in the form of beautiful and young women. While this may be a legend, the story of the Himmapan forest holds a special place in the hearts of many Thais, and countless theatrical interpretations and re-enactments of its mysterious secrets have been made throughout the years. Engaging with the audience through its 4-D walkthrough, the spectator feels surrounded by it, an enchanting dream-like moment which is sure to go unforgotten. The plot line, which sees deities and demonic figures in an epic battle for power sees them fighting it out to acquire a rock that safeguards the

Himmapan jungle from deforestation, in what is a true clash of the titans. The Himmapan Avatar show, which was launched on the 26th of March, has already garnered praise from the public and promises to attract many more to its dazzling displays of mysticism. F

or the 15th year, Bill and Kathy Heinecke, along with their Anantara Hotel chain and their many long time sponsors have put on one of Thailand’s most anticipated and fun events, the King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament. The purpose of the four-day event is to raise money for Thailand’s beloved Elephants with the Pachymerms benefitting (so far) to the tune of 1.4 million U.S. Dollars. From March 9th to the 12th, on a man-made pitch along the Chao Phraya River, 25 unemployed ex-street elephants took part, during which time they received full veterinary checks from the Zoological Parks Organisation of Thailand (under the patronage of His Majesty the King of Thailand) and the Department of Livestock Development. In addition, all elephants were given essential vitamins, food and care which are not available to them during their normal daily lives. Forty players from around the world converged on Bangkok to form ten Polo teams and in the process created untold memorable moments both on and off the pitch during this much-loved charity event. The tournament started Thursday morning March 9th with a Monk Blessing that saw the monks placing sacred garlands over the necks of the elephants. Thailand’s last elephant spirit men (Kru Ba Yai), who possess spiritual control over all of Thailand’s elephants presided over the early morning rituals. The Elephants certainly enjoyed themselves as they were served a fruit buffet. Tournament play kicked off at 11AM with the 2016 champions, King Power, represented by Nattapong Pratumlee, Satid Wongkraso and Tom Claytor continuing their winning style, easily beating newcomers BENIHANA by double scores. The match of the day was between teams PWC All Blacks which includes international rugby players, Olo Brown, Stu Wilson and Charlie Richelman and Casiliero Del Diablo represented by Argentina’s finest polo players, Agustin Kronhaus, Manuel Albizu and Franck Constant with the first half closing in a nail biting tie. The tested All Blacks came into the second half all set to fight for a win against the newest editions to the Elephant Polo Cup line up, but the team from Buenos Aires easily progressed into the next round with a 6-4 win.

Day one of the tournament ended with the annual Charity Auction Gala Dinner which this year was hosted at the Anantara’s flagship hotel, the Anantara Siam Bangkok. The evening saw 3.7 million baht raised which will be donated to a wide range of projects that better the lives of Thailand’s domestic and wild elephants. Friday is always kids day, allowing children from local schools all over Bangkok to get up close with the elephants and learn more about their national animal. A range of educational walks, games and activities all teaching the benefits of elephant conservation and well-being are put on during the day. On the field, 10 teams battled it out on Friday with the match of the day being between IBM and Anantara Hotels & Resorts. The first chukker finished with IBM’s veteran players David Wildridge, Mark Pearson and newcomer Isabelle Duncan scoring a flurry of goals resulting in a first half score of 4-2. Anantara fought back in the second chukker but was no match for the seasoned IBM team with a final result of 8-3. Day 3, Saturday, is always the most glamourous as the crowds, celebrities and socialites turn out for ‘Ladies Day’, also known as Bangkok’s Ascot, with the best dressed winning a trip to the Maldives. Day 3 also saw a fiercely fought battle between teams King Power, captained by Tom Claytor and Casillero Del Diablo (CDD) led by Argentina’s national polo players Agustin Kronhaus and Manuel Albizu. In what was described as the best match of the tournament so far, it looked like there may be an upset with the 2016 champions, King Power, trailing in the first few minutes. However, with great play from King Power’s Nattapong Pratumlee and Satid Wongkraso they managed to retake the lead at the end of the chukker by 9 goals to 7. Showing their polo expertise, the Argentinians fought back hard with CDD team captain Franck Constant coming so close to taking the win, but his final shot fell on the line and left the game at a draw of 9-9. The final day of the King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament offered plenty of memorable moments and a new reigning champion.

King Power fought back fervently in the second half to gain a comfortable lead and look set to retain their title but with only minutes left in the second chukker, the Kalaan brothers scored three consecutive goals resulting in a final score of 11-10 and a brand new champion of the King’s Cup. The King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament combines sport, glamour, celebrities, industry titans, children and charity, all for the benefit of Thailand’s most beloved national animal, the majestic elephant. The popular restaurant’s gastronomy ranges from absolute authentic classics to modern takes of old favourite dishes complemented too by new gastronomical inventions such as mixology. The night we were there we tried several of their most popular dishes and it was easy to see why. We started with their Larb pork ribs and Pork Satay graduating to their Australian Beef Thai Salad and their over

the top Lobster Phad Thai. The flavours were harmonizing and the presentation splendid. Alongside the delicious Thai delicacies found in its menu, what makes the Mango Tree on the River such a special place to dine is its strategical placement by the river. The gentle breeze coming from the mild flow of the marvellous Thai waterway, along with soothing Thai music in the background, makes the eatery unforgettable and most definitely a favourite.

According to the owners of URBAN LIVING FURNITURE, Joachim Drewitz and Matt Kaewprasitchok, THE ROOM will offer a wide range of complete furniture packages for indoor and outdoor in the mid-range price segment that is more palatable for customers working with a budget. THE ROOM’s aspiration is

to become a one-stop solution provider for developers and operators in the hospitality sector who want to outsource the entire interior design and installation work to a professional and reliable partner. URBAN LIVING FURNITURE and THE ROOM will be complementary to each other and give its customers a greater choice of products at diverse prices levels. URBAN LIVING FURNITURE opened in late 2015 and ever since has enjoyed a constantly growing base of discerning customers who appreciate the fresh look of its high-grade furniture range that

pleasantly distinguishes itself from its competitors. URBAN LIVING FURNITURE has continuously expanded and revamped its furniture range and has selectively added local and international brands to its portfolio. In due course it is set to announce an exclusive dealership for Thailand with a world-class luxury outdoor furniture brand as well as a collaboration agreement with a leading interior designer and producer of customized furniture for the hospitality sector.
