NOTE
T
hailand is known for having some of the most beautiful tropical islands in the world. With world tourism exploding though, especially from China, experiencing that remote tropical island feeling is sadly becoming a thing of the past. However, this month we are pleased to take you to one of the last islands in Thailand where you can really feel like you’ve gotten away from society and the hustle and bustle it brings. Join us on page 36 for our trip to Koh Kood, the easternmost Thai island. In May, Air Asia will begin offering roundtrip flights from Hua Hin to Kuala Lumpur, opening up wonderful opportunities to experience Malaysia with little effort. No more 3+ hour drive’s to Bangkok’s busy airports before you can even begin your journey. When booking however, we suggest you buy a one-way ticket to KL and return to Thailand onboard the fabled Eastern & Oriental Express. The E & O brings the glamour, elegance and exotic scenery of the classic black-and-white movie era to life. To step onboard is to step inside another world. Pick up your train pass and turn to page 44.

Philip B’s hair-care products are some of the most expensive in the world. If you have a spare 55,000 baht lying around you could purchase his Russian Amber Shampoo. Forbes Magazine was so impressed with his products that they placed Philip B’s scalp treatment on their list of “100 Things Worth Every Penny. Philip counts over 400 celebrities using his products daily including Lady Gaga, Madonna, Drew Barymore, Sandra Bullock to name just a few.
In this months “Let’s Stay” we are pleased to check you into the Chatrium Royal Lake Yangon Hotel. The Chatrium Yangon is their only property outside of the Kingdom and in our opinion the only true 5-star hotel in Yangon. Get your key card and turn to page 54.

La Playa Party # 2 at the InterCon Hua Hin The InterContinental Hua Hin Resort’s La Playa Party on New Year’s Eve 2017 was hands down the biggest and best beach party in Hua Hin that night. The InterContinental team pulled out all the stops for it’s second La Playa party held on Saturday April 14th, one day after Thailand’s New Year Songkran. Starting at 3 PM and going until midnight on Saturday, guests were treated to 4 DJ’s, a Fire Show from Koh Samui, a Rain Dance and what turned out to be a very popular event, black light body painting. Bacardi and Chang were the drink sponsors and they delivered an abundance of beverages to the joyous crowd estimated at 800 to 1,000. La Playa means “beach” in Spanish and the InterContinental Hua Hin’s La Playa parties are not to be missed. Will it make a return? New Years 2018 for sure they say but hopefully once or twice more before then!

Wagging Tales Cafe where 100% of profits go to helping thailand's street dogs & cats Wagging Tales is a not-for-profit café that supports the efforts of organizations in Thailand to care for stray animals. Thailand has more than one million stray dogs and cats and their numbers are increasing dramatically every year. Many of these animals are hungry, sick and injured. Local people sometimes feed them but lack the knowledge of how to care for them effectively and prevent population growth. There is not enough being done to help prevent an already serious problem from spiraling out of control. Wagging Tales’ goal is to support efforts to halt growth of the stray
population through sterilizations and ensure that dogs and cats in Thailand have food, medical care and unconditional love. These efforts also include giving local people the knowledge to prevent population growth and give proper care to local dogs and cats. Wagging Tales wants to get the stray dog and cat population in Thailand under control. With each purchase at Wagging Tales Cafe, 100% of profits go to support ‘Rescue Paws’, a local animal rescue non-profit organization in Hua Hin that cares for hundreds of stray animals, educates local people about pet care, and performs many sterilizations each month.
All two legged and four legged fury friends are welcome at Wagging Tales. Enjoy a coffee or juice and a bite to eat with friends. By visiting Wagging Tales you can feel good knowing that your support is helping so many precious animals who don't have what we all want; food, health, security and love. Wagging Tales is located down Soi 43 off of Phetchakasem, just a few soi's down from the Palace & Golden Place on the same side of the road. Wagging Tales Cafe is open Monday to Friday 7.30 to 4.30 PM & Saturday, Sunday 8.30 to 5.30 PM.

he Mediterranean Blue walls with white trim were immediately striking as we entered Dorigo Café & Bistro. That colour blue takes me to small harbours on the east coast of Italy I visited when much younger - the little blue fishing boats, the ocean and the sky - all in different shades of that colour I call Mediterranean Blue. It’s as if I’ve been taken back in time. What a positive first impression.

Friendly staff welcome us, and we are seated in the bright, air-conditioned dining room. Other guests are sitting on the covered open-air terrace the fronts the restaurant. Outside early evening traffic whizzes past but we are surrounded by a calm, as the staff serve our drinks. Dorigo’s menu starts with Pizza, some 21 of them, and all sounding authentically Italian. Homemade Neapolitan Style Pizza is what they promise – in the style of Naples that many say is the original home of Pizza. Next on the menu come the appetisers and snacks including many of the classics like Beef Carpaccio, Burrata & Parma Ham, Clams in white wine, Caprese salad, or Bruschetta, to name just a few. Next are the Salads and Soups and then the Pasta dishes. Ten different sauces on offer and 5 styles of Pasta to choose from. Do you feel like a simple Tomato and Basil sauce or perhaps Spaghetti Vongole (pasta with clams in a white wine sauce)? All the Italian standards are here. The menu is rounded off with three Risotto dishes and six main dishes three of which are fish and a classic from Milan, Cotoletta Alla Milanese – breaded pork chop in this version.

What to order? Our group decided to select a variety and share as best as we could. It all sounded too good to not sample and share. Bruschetta to start with sweet fresh Tomato and Basel on crispy bread and definitely made fresh. A Rocket salad with sausage and Parmesan. Chef Jay informed us the sausages pork with his special Italian herbs are made in-house and complement the peppery rocket and slightly salty Parmesan.
The Seafood Soup caught our eye when perusing the menu and it delivered bags of flavour when served. A mouth filling tomato-based soup, perhaps with a hint of white wine surrounding a generous serve of perfectly cooked prawns, mussels and clams topped with halves of fresh cherry tomatoes. A tomato and seafood delight! We had to try the Pizza and chose the Parma Ham, Boccioni and Rocket. Chef Jay explained the dough is made inhouse and rests for a day before being used. In the classic Naples style, thin based pizzas with that 2-3 cm high crust around the edges. With a tomato sauce base and topped with generous slices of Parma and fresh creamy Boccioni, rocket leaves and a liberal pour of Olive Oil. What’s not to love about this!
Classic 4 Cheese Risotto was our final dish, and Chef Jay must have been saving the best for last. The creamiest risotto any of us had ever tasted - buttery with Mozzarella, Parmesan, Gorgonzola and topped with Ricotta. We made short time of that bowl and not a skerrick was left. Absolutely delicious! Dorigo does have a small wine list and strictly Italian wines, including the House Wine. No Chile, Argentinean or South African wines here, proudly explains Chef Jay. Just a handful of Italian whites, reds and a sparkling and priced reasonably.

Our delightful feast was finished off with Tiramisu, once again made in-house and presented modestly yet elegantly. A luxurious treat blending the bold flavours of cocoa and espresso with tangy mascarpone cheese, not to mention the wine-soaked finger biscuits separating and combining the layers. We understand there are often daily specials for desserts, depending what Chef Jay is inspired to create. Formally trained, we learn that our host has been involved in kitchens since 11 or 12 years old. Initially in his mother's restaurant businesses in Phuket and then through his formal training in Bangkok and restaurant experience.
Although he loves his father’s home country of Italy and Venice specifically, Chef Jay sees his other home country of Thailand as more exciting. But some traditions like buying locally wherever possible including regular trips to the Markets for his produce is something that he continues with Dorigo. Bringing his Italian heritage to Dorigo Café & Bistro and his new hometown of Hua Hin is what Chef Jay is all about. He wants customers to feel as if they are dining in an Italian home when they eat at Dorigo.
As the evening came to a close, our party agreed that we could not fault any of the dishes tasted and would definitely be making a return visit. There were so many other enticements on the menu that just had to be sampled, so we look forward to seeing you again Chef Jay! By Michael Cullen

L et’s Go,
Koh Kood
I
t is no secret that Thailand has a large abundance of paradisiac islands, known for their crystalline waters and their incredibly vast shores of sandy beaches and perfectly laid out scenery. But at times there seems to be even a competition within those to see which one has the better amenities, the most stretches of beauty and the greatest amount of charm. Out of all the Thai islands Koh Kood has been dubbed as one of the most beautiful islands in the country. Early tenants of Koh Kood were Thais and Cambodians who fled to the Thai region when the French assumed control over the city of Padjantakiri in 1904. The most original people are those in Klong Mad Village, whose inhabitants still plant rubber and coconut trees as part of their subsistence along with fishing. Be that as it may, the biggest village on the island is Ao Yai Village, where numerous fishing boats take shelter. Furrowed fields have made way to numerous inland rivulets, streams and waterfalls. The Klong Chao Waterfall is likely the most amazing due to its size. With three levels, it enables guests to swim and bathe in the waters all year around. King Rama VI visited in 1911 and it was given the illustrious name “Anamkok Waterfall in remembrance to Ong Chiang Lue, a Vietnamese ruler who sought shelter in the country amid the reign of King Rama I in the late eighteenth century.

The Island is 25 kilometers in length and 12 kilometers wide, covering a territory of near 105 square kilometers. Its characteristic highlights are mountains and fields where numerous streams begin and progress toward becoming waterfalls. A definite must see for those who make it to this piece of paradise. Located in Trat, in the easternmost point of Thailand, near Cambodia and about 315 kilometres from the capital, Koh Kood is the fourth biggest island in the country and the second biggest island in Trat Province after Koh Chang. The shorelines with crystal clear waters are extremely well known amongst guests, especially Taphao Beach, Khlong Chao Beach, Khlong Hin Beach, and Phrao Beach. Private housing is granted for guests both in Koh Kood and another two islands, Koh Rat and Koh Mai Si, inverse to Koh Kood. In case you're in question about where to stay overnight during your visit, there are various hotels and cabins however, none is as popular (and luxurious) as the Soneva Kiri resort. Situated on the shoreline of the rainforest, it is equipped with beautiful infinity pools, classy furniture, buggies and private butlers.

This luxurious resort features 12 different kinds of villas. All more luxurious than the previous one, but none lacking grandiosity, they go from the one bedroom villa of about 400 square metres to the beastly 6 bedroom villa at near 3,000 square metres. This latter one offers a private pool, water slide, a fitness room and even an outdoor cinema across a fabulous pool and tree pod dining, an exceptional experience. The whole island has a generally untouched eco-framework above and beneath the water. The island has developed an eco-traveller ethos, requiring divers to sign an ecomindfulness document prior to engaging in any activity. The Klong Chao Waterfall is especially stunning. This brilliant waterfall overflows with sparkling water throughout the entire year, wonderful for a nice little swim. The Coastal street keeps running down the west side of the island round toward the south and at that point cuts over the island and through the wilderness, ending up in Aow Yai. But if you’d rather get on the back of a bicycle and be more active, there is also that option. The street is a blend of dirt roads, rough pavement and newly cemented roads which makes it an energizing and engaging course for mountain bikers. This course takes one past Bang Bao and the immaculate Siam shoreline which everybody is enticed to swim in. The street brings you down to another delightful shoreline called Klong Hin, this is the place the beach front way begins. The way is steep most of the way up to give the traveller a stunning perspective of the shorelines – and on a sunny morning, it is possible to see Cambodia. This bluff edge way brings you down to a little angling town with a staggering shoreline called Baan Aow Pharo. At Baan Aow Pharo one begins to head inland and through numerous palm oil plantations (fields of tall coconut trees) and rubber plantations. Aow Pharo, Bang Bao and Siam Beach are probably the most flawless and confined shorelines you will find in the bay of Thailand. Fishing trips are led by local fishermen who take visitors for an entire day of boat adventures on their customary wooden fishing pontoons. Food and drinks are both included. Since Koh Kood and the encompassing waters are not inclined to the big business of commercial fishing, there are an abundance of fish to be had. All in all, be it for the splendiferous beauty of its geography or the priceless quality of the beaches in which it lies Koh Kood is a must go destination if your idea of heaven is a tropical island paradise.

Bumrungrad Health Briefs Dangers of Sleep Apnea A good night’s rest is essential for good health. Many of us, however, wake up in the morning feeling exhausted and unmotivated. Waking up feeling refreshed remains elusive and we don’t know why. Perhaps you wake many times to visit the bathroom, or maybe your snoring is so loud that it wakes you up — both problems are signs of sleep apnea, a chronic condition affecting millions of adults. Sleep apnea causes episodes of breathing pauses or shallow breaths during sleep. These pauses may be brief or last for several minutes, and they disrupt your sleep by moving you from deep sleep into light sleep, reducing overall sleep quality and causing you to feel tired during the day. Left untreated, sleep apnea increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, obesity, diabetes, and even heart failure. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical, yet many patients remain unaware that they have sleep apnea. Common symptoms include: • Loud snoring and periodic breathing stoppages during sleep; • Difficulty staying asleep or waking suddenly with shortness of breath; • Waking up with dry mouth or sore throat; • Morning headaches and/or irritability throughout the day; • Feeling sleepy during the day and having difficulty concentrating. You can take a major step toward preventing sleep apnea by paying attention to your health and sleep habits, talking to your doctor about any issues of concern, and following your doctor’s advice for screenings and health checkups.
Specific Risk Factors People who are obese are four times more likely to have sleep apnea than normal-weight people, and smoking triples one’s sleep apnea risk. 42
HOT Magazine
Certain risk factors cannot be controlled. Men are twice as likely as women to have a sleep disorder, though a woman’s risk increases after menopause. Having a family history of sleep apnea is also a risk factor. See a doctor if you experience more than one of the following symptoms: • You snore loud enough to wake yourself or others; • You are woken up by shortness of breath or gasping for air; • You have pauses in your breathing during sleep; • You are extremely drowsy during the day, and may fall asleep during normal activities.
Managing Sleep Apnea Many sleep apnea patients are helped by using a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device, which painlessly delivers oxygen-rich pressurized air into the throat during sleep. Oral appliances are another option designed to open your throat by bringing your jaw forward. Still other patients opt for surgery to expand the airway through the nose or throat.

The Eastern & Oriental At times it is necessary to embark on adventures in which the journey is as thrilling and captivating as the destination to which one is bound. This can be done by car, by bike, by foot or boat or by plane. But never has it been as exciting and comfortable as travelling by train – one of the most scenic ways of exploring cities, countries and continents. If you choose this mode of transportation then there isn't a more enjoyable or luxurious way to go than on the Eastern & Oriental Express.

The Eastern & Oriental Express train goes by means of southeast Asia, linking Thailand to Malaysia and Singapore. Those journeys begin and conclude in a blend of three places: Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, the heart of Malaysia, and Bangkok. The journey begins in Singapore, over the strait of Malaysia. The country is a blend of delicious greenery and shining day high rises with a sprinkling of noteworthy houses and points of interest. A blend of societies - Chinese, Malay, Indonesian and Western – mirrors the blend of individuals who have settled here. The adventure starts with a onenight stay at Raffles Inn in Singapore which boasts of roof fans and antique furniture inside. Singapore Slings are served on the veranda before supper in one of the hotel's dazzling eateries, which takes visitors back to a more thoughtful time: the ideal prelude to a trip on board the train. Travelers are delivered to the train for five days of cross country travel. Once in Malaysia, it stops at Kuala Lumpur for a morning city visit. This is trailed by an adventure on into the picturesque heaps of Malaysia for an overnight remain at the notable Cameron Highlands Resort. Early in the day visitors may pick between a stroll in the rainforest or a trek to a tea estate where a tea tasting event takes place on a patio above the ranch.

Travelers re-join the train and spend every ensuing night on it, stopping along the route for occasional strolls in scenic places. One is to the Malaysian island of Penang and its photogenic capital, George Town, with its conventional wooden houses and Chinese sanctuaries. The train crosses the fringe into Thailand and makes a stop at Baan Huay Yang, a little angling town. Travelers are taken by pontoon to Koh Chaan, a staggering island home to a huge number of birds. On coming back to the shoreline at Koh Chaan a fantastic barbecue grill is prepared. When the train manoeuvers into a stop beside the River Kwai, it drums up excitement. Individuals are charmed and enchanted as the train approaches and run to take pictures. The visit proceeds to the Thailand Burma Railway Centre, a museum exhibiting the adjoining burial ground for Prisoners of War from Wold War II, an extremely sensitive yet appealing place. The next day the train touches base in Bangkok at the terrific Hualamphong station, where they will encounter the energy of Hualamphong station, a neoclassical building that marked 100 years in 2016. Bangkok is, as we know, a sprawling city with outlandish sights, smells and sounds. The powerful Chao Praya waterway and the well known khlongs dissect the metropolis. Old wats sit one next to the other with shopping centres, while roadside sellers contrast with the high rises in the open air sky bars.

The train left a mark in 1993, when it was inaugurated to become the first travelling 1943 kilometres from Singapore all the way to Bangkok, connecting the railroad frameworks of both Malaysia and Thailand. The carriages of the train are painted dim green and gold, as the staff complement to the beauty, wearing Thai traditional clothing. Lodge stewards and servers wear fresh white coats and luxuriously hued silk petticoats while female staff wear long skirts with pink silk coats. The train’s insides are outfitted with Asian dÊcor. Perfect carpeting, decoration and fine textures and rugs – including silk by famous architect Jim Thompson, who is said to have disappeared in Malaysia last century. The train bears en-suite restrooms, aerating and cooling, a viewing deck to get a charge out of the tropical atmosphere and a room to read in, home to an inhabitant reflexologist and spiritualist. Breakfast is served to the cabins, lunch and supper are served in the Dining Car, richly outfitted with carpets, rugs, silk wallcoverings and armchairs. The tables are set with white linens, silver and fine china. Through the extensive windows there's an all-encompassing perspective of the passing view. In the vivacious bar, visitors can appreciate aperitifs and stimulation, for example, conventional Thai dances can be enjoyed prior to supper. Later, the gregarious pianist, Peter, keeps playing until the last guest goes to bed. When travellers come back to their lodge they'll see it has been mysteriously changed into a comfortable room. All have en-suite lavatories including a shower. There's additionally a Presidential Cabin with a bigger sitting region and larger restroom.

The trip is a convivial one: there’s something about a train journey spanning a few days that draws people together. Friendships are forged in the bar car, on the observation deck, over lunch and dinner. Frenchman Yannis Martineau has been the executive chef of the train almost a decade and has lived and worked in Southeast Asia for a dozen years. Working in a little cook room kitchen, Martineau gets ready dishes that are an ideal mix of east meets west, for example, a tom yam vichyssoise with quail. The train is the brainchild of visionary businessman James B Sherwood, founder of Belmond (previously Orient-Express Hotels). It was built by Nippon Sharyo & Hitachi in Japan in 1972, and first operated in New Zealand as the Silver Star. The carriages were remodelled and reconfigured in Singapore workshops to run on Malaysian and Thai railway tracks. The Eastern & Oriental express all in all is a fantastic way to traverse three countries in a span of little under a week whilst basking in the utmost glory of luxurious and wondrous pleasure. If you haven’t tried it yet, we definitely recommend it.

Minor, Bettering The Lives Of Gentle Giants
E
lephants have been admired and loved by humans throughout time. From the beginning, elephants have been revered for their large size and majestic mannerisms. Despite their great size however, elephants are known to be gentle creatures. In Bangkok, the King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament, held yearly in March receives world-wide coverage with press flying in from all corners of the planet to cover this unique four day charitable & social event. Through the generosity of participants and spectators at the lively King’s Cup annual charity auction and during the tournament, Anantara, the organizer, raised a whopping 4 million baht this year bringing the total amount raised throughout the life of the tournament to approximately US$1.7 million dollars.

The main goal of the Tournament is to create real and lasting change for elephants in need. Funds from the 2017 King’s Cup were donated to various projects including the Zoological Parks Organisation of Thailand which supports veterinary and educational projects to improve the year-round lives of elephants and mahouts in the Surin Province where ex-street elephants face ongoing hardship. The donations have also funded South East Asia’s first ever workshop to teach mahouts and vets the benefits of Environmental Enrichment to keep elephants happy as well as the construction of a watch tower in a village whose crops are raided by elephants, allowing villagers to watch and warn other villagers of approaching elephants in a safe manner for both people & elephants.
Raised funds were also used on a conservation education trip for the children of mahouts, the next generation of hereditary mahouts, to learn the importance of elephants in the wild. Additionally, money was used for the transport of Thai elephant vets to international conferences; funding Thai Government aid to teach mahouts to act as veterinary assistants and provide basic first aid and other medical care to their elephants as well as community based Human Elephant Conflict mitigation projects in two Thai and one Tanzanian National Parks and the purchase of equipment for antipoaching rangers in a Cambodian National Park.

The Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation, or GTAEF, as it is known, is the Anantara’s Elephant Charity arm. The GTAEF strongly believes that in an ideal world all elephants would be wild. This is unfortunately not the case, so until we reach that point, the GTAEF works to assist captive elephants, improving their lives and welfare, while also taking part in conservation and wild elephant programs to ensure the survival of the wild herd. Over 30 elephants have been rescued from Thailand’s city streets, accompanied by their entire mahout family and provided with a place to live and grow. English lessons are arranged for the mahouts and their wives, education is made available for their children, and a silk worm business provides the wives with 100% of the profits made from the sales of their wares.

In addition to performing street rescues, the GTAEF cooperates with the Thai government and other organizations in projects supporting research and clinics using elephants in therapy sessions for children living with autism. They have helped equip the first elephant hospital in Krabi by donating a gantry to help lame elephants stand, providing a mobile blood centrifuge and they have donated a purpose-built elephant ambulance to the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre (TECC). The GTAEF has also built the world’s only research facility dedicated to scientifically researching elephant intelligence and behavior. Working through international partners and the Cambodian Government, the GTAEF has, since 2013, funded the protection of an 18,000 hectare elephant corridor of standing forest in the Cardamom Mountains. Other significant benefits from the money raised includes the funding of Asia’s first workshop to show traditional elephant trainers and camp owners the benefits of Positive Reinforcement Training for captive elephants with additional workshops this year in Myanmar reaching teams responsible for over 200 elephants. They also planted an elephant corridor of 4,000 trees in Hua Hin to stop farmer vs. elephant conflicts. The Anantara, and its parent company Minor International, have a culture of caring about elephants. This is due in large part to their CEO & Founder, Bill Heinecke who has an affinity for these gentle giants. According to Bill, “Elephants are, in many ways, just like people, the average lifespan of an elephant is around 60–70 years and you don’t really begin working as an elephant until age 15 or 16. Family is very important to them too.” He went on to say, “Chances are if you buy the elephant from the mahout, he would just go into the wild and get another elephant, so we provide education, housing and a livelihood for the mahouts and their families.” For more information visit www.helpingelephants.org

A Conversation with Philip B
A
s Hollywood's preeminent hair-treatment expert, Philip B, the professional name of Philip Berkovitz, has garnered international praise for his visionary approach to hair, scalp and body-care treatments. His award-winning blends, all based on pure botanicals and essential oils at potent, unheard-of-in-the-industry concentrations, have dramatically changed the way the world perceives luxury care for hair and skin. Philip B’s hair-care products are some of the most expensive in the world. If you have a spare 55,000 baht lying around you could purchase his Russian Amber Shampoo. Forbes Magazine was so impressed with his products that they placed Philip B’s scalp treatment on their list of “100 Things Worth Every Penny." Philip counts over 400 celebrities using his products daily including Lady Gaga, Madonna, Drew Barymore, Sandra

Bullock, Robert Redford, Courtney Love, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Ronnie Wood to name just a few. According to Philip “I love giving hair treatments and seeing people instantly transformed". Clients always say to me, 'If only everyone could sit in your chair!' But everyone can: It's not me – it's the products. All of them were tested on my clients, many of whom are famous people who need to have a great hair day, every day. "From the first time I saw what pure botanicals could do for hair, especially when used at potent, active levels, I knew that I was onto something.” Philip began his professional hair styling career as a teenager in his home state of Massachusetts. In 1984, he moved to Los Angeles and found work in salons frequented by Hollywood celebrities. Finding that commercial treatments were
inadequate for healing overprocessed hair, common to movie actresses, Philip B. experimented with botanical blends of his own. He sourced ingredients for customblended essential oil formulations at local farmers' markets and herb shops. His first commercial formula, Philip B. Rejuvenating Oil, was first sold at Fred Segal in Los Angeles in 1992. His venture went nationwide a year later with placement at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman. Today, Philip B. treatment and styling products are sold in 74 countries around the world. In Thailand, Philip B’s product line can by found in the luxury shopping malls of the Mall Group and the Central Group. Beauty Queen, Actress & TV Host Cindy Bishop, who we interviewed late last year, has signed on to be the Philip B spokesperson for Thailand.

Every year Philip travels the world promoting his product line. He was in Bangkok not too long ago where Thai socialite Khun Sumanee Guna Kasem threw a small party in his honor. It was there that HOT Magazine had the distinct pleasure of getting to know Philip and we are pleased to present our conversation with him here. HM. Philip, you grew up in the American state of Massachusetts, on the opposite coast from where you reside now. What was your childhood like and did you have visions then of what your life was going to be like today? PB. I grew up in Cape Cod, I grew up by the ocean. When you grow up in a beach community, you have these amazing hot summers and you grow up playing on the beach, building sand castles and eating ice cream on the boardwalk. You also get winters which are harsh and cold, so you dream of the sunshine again. That’s what brought my mind to Los Angeles and having a successful career, hairdressing was something I grew up with my whole life. My mom used to take me to the salon as a child and I would watch hairdressers as a young child and mimic what I saw. Growing up in Boston was great, but I needed sunshine all year and for an adult in the entertainment world, you can’t get what you can get in Los Angeles anywhere else. HM. You started your professional hair stylist career in Massachusetts, how many years were you working there before you left for Los Angeles? PB. Five or six years I was working in a salon in Boston before moving to L.A.
70
HOT Magazine
HM. As Frank Sinatra sang in New York, New York, “If I can make it there I’ll make it anywhere.” I would suspect it was very much the same in L.A. and Hollywood in particular with people from around the world moving there to find fame and fortune. Was it hard getting a job at an LA salon that was frequented by the rich and famous? PB. No, in Los Angeles, when you get to town, these salons are like a circus, it was like the hairdressers were the performers who would draw the people in. If you went to apply for a job and if you truly had talent, they would audition you. You would do a “cut and a blowout” (which is a haircut and a blow dry), and if you could do that and make them go wild, they would hire you immediately. Then, you learn all about hair color and hair treatment. Personality will always get you in the door (or out of a door), but your talent will solidify you. HM. Was it in L.A. that you decided to start your own hair care brand or was that percolating in your brain prior to moving to the West Coast?
PB. Yes, my dream was to make every client who left my chair happy. If you have someone who has blood under their fingernails from scratching their scalp from itchy, flaky scalps, you should help them. I always try to be there for them. Some people have more resilient healthy genes. But meeting the client’s needs is a big spectrum and that’s why I have so many products, I now have over 40 products, I have clients with thin and thick hair, dry scalps, oily scalps, everything. I look at the body like a moving machine, in constant motion. Treating the person in need, caring is the essence of this business, you don’t get into this business to get rich, you do it because you like caring for people. HM. Your first commercial product was your Philip B. Rejuvenating Oil which you sold at Fred Segal in Los Angeles in 1992. How many versions of that product did you make before you found the formula that you would go on to sell commercially? PB. Hundreds. I started it three years before launching it, I went through formula after formula before finding the right mixture that allowed moisture on different levels, not just topical (that’s just cosmetic).
HOT Magazine
71
HM. Was it hard to get that first retailer interested in your product and selling at such a famous store as Fred Segal’s, is this where your ultrahigh pricing strategy was born? PB. With my Jesus-like ability of fixing scalps in Hollywood, I quickly became in demand. When magazines asked celebrities what fixed their hair, they said my name. When people wrote about me in magazines, people started buying. If they love you, they keep buying. It’s a resultsdriven brand, we lived in a world where people wash their hair with soap and water, someone needed to make a change using essential oils and blending in active levels, which gives an expensive formula and an amazing result. It's called harnessing nature and it's an investment and must be passed on in the price point and people embraced it because it produced stunning results. If you want a smoother ride, buy a nicer car. HM. A year later you expanded across the nation offering your
72
HOT Magazine
product at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman. Today, Philip B. treatment and styling products are sold in 74 countries. How many products do you offer now, what’s your biggest seller and why do you think that is? PB. I didn’t go there trying to sell my products, people called me and said “Come to Dallas and meet me and we’ll put you in all my stores!” My phone was ringing off the hook with senior vice presidents and even the CEO of Nordstrom called me personally when I was driving in my car, I had to pull over, I almost crashed. I was in such demand all over the country. I have the number one salon in Kuala Lumpur and I have distributors in Hong Kong, Tokyo and Taiwan, all over Japan and soon the Philippines. HM. A big reason for the high cost of your products is the exotic ingredients they are made from. Those include Russian Amber and Oud which is made from agarwood,
one of the most expensive natural raw materials in the world. What is it about Russian Amber and Oud that make them important ingredients for you? PB. What’s amazing about these products is the emotions they evoke in people - they provoke sensual, pretty and romantic feelings, they’re exotic and rich. Real result driven formulas. HM. How much are you personally involved in developing new Philip B. products? PB. 100% - I’m in my kitchen mixing up prototypes over there and perfecting and tuning in the lab. HM. Are there any new products in the pipeline you can tell us about? PB. Yes, I’m working on hair loss now, I have developed a formula that is guaranteed to enlarge hair follicles and kick up growth patterns. Looking forward to launching next year.
PB. We’re leaving in July to Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Bangkok, Dubai, Munich and then I am going to London, Paris, London, Copenhagen, maybe Oslo, I want to do Italy, Madrid and Lisbon, Bali, Indonesia, we’re going to dart around. I’d say 30 countries a year. HM. In 2017 you started a new program of bringing your hair care brand to some of the finest hotels in the world. Your Philip B Hair Care Salon’s can now be found at the Hotel Du Cap Eden-Roc in the French Antibes and Raffles in Paris. What can you tell us about this initiative and is it expanding globally? PB. It’s filling a niche of luxury need. Even the most exceptional luxury brands are not exceptional at making liquids. These hotels need a spa offering services and exotic products and treatments that give amazing dream-like results, and that gives them a point of difference. If they have these three qualities; a service that gives amazing results, one that attract the wealthy niche audience by giving a point of difference that moves the needle in business, and creating a customer base through word of mouth, which drives the business, they have a winning situation. HM. In 2013, you married Michael Huober, an artist and designer who is now the Creative Director at Philip B. When you two holiday, where do you go and what do you enjoy doing? HM. Outside of the U.S. what other countries are big markets for you and has China caught on yet? PB. Yes, China has caught on. I sell through the lux retailer, Space NK Stores . Some other exclusive stores carry me in mainland China, I’m in Hong Kong and Taiwan, as well. My main market is America and then Asia, Europe is my third market, Scandinavia is four, Africa is five. South America is going to be next. HM. The users of your hair care products include celebrities, business moguls and royalty all with household name recognition. Can you namedrop just a few of your high-profile users? PB. Richard and Joan Branson, Paris Hilton, The Rolling Stones, Swedish royalty, I’m in royal houses all over the world, as well as the CEO of Sony Pictures.
HM. You travel in the celebrity circuit, including being a regular at Elton John’s annual Oscar party. Are there any celebrities that make you tongue tied when meeting? PB. No, they don’t make me nervous anymore. They’re just people. Maybe when I was young, but things are different now. What makes me nervous is making sure each formula I produce has the proper delivery system and actives to ensure a fantastic result in each of my 40+ products. You can put soap and water in a bottle but I’m in the game and this is science. HM. Being the owner and brand spokesperson for Philip B. your travel schedule is dizzying. Besides jet setting between your homes in L.A. and Munich, how many countries do you visit in a year on average and when will we see you back in Bangkok?
PB. We love Thailand, I love taking holidays in Asia. Whether I am walking under the cherry blossom trees or partying in Roppongi, or hanging out in midlevels, or sunbathing in Phuket, I love getting away from the pressure-cooker like life of Los Angeles and seeing Asia. HM. Finally Philip, a question we end most interviews with. What was your happiest day and what made it so? PB. Marrying my honey, July 29, 2013, I married Michael. We have been on an incredible life journey together that is always a great time. I can’t wait to see what’s next.

Global hotel chains such as Marriott, InterContinental, Hyatt and Hilton have a presence in the city. Yet, the historical town has also retained its gentle atmosphere and welcoming nature. The world-class city also serves as a convenient and safe second home for many, and its proximity to Bangkok and International airports is also a draw. Additionally, starting in May, Air Asia will have regular weekly flights to Kuala Lumpur which many believe is just the beginning. Sansiri PLC is currently preparing for the launch of its latest Hua Hin residential project which it is calling La Casita Hua Hin. Located at Petchkasem Road, the 9,600 sqm
development will house 705 units in a secured gated community only about 320 meters from sandy beaches. Interest in La Casita is building up as Sansiri has a reputation for quality in Hua Hin. Three decades ago, it built Baan Kaimuk Condominium, a golden-coloured landmark that still dominates the seafront. A unit at Baan Kaimuk sold for 80 million baht last year, testifying to its durability and ability to draw buyers today. La Casita is situated between Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall and Bangkok Hospital, one of the country’s top medical facilities. Also, it is located within the central city zone, where land prices have been increasing over the past year.
Additionally, La Casita property prices will benefit from the development of new highspeed rail links that will link Bangkok to Hua Hin, making the commute pleasant and quicker. Currently, bidding for the mega rail project is underway. La Casita’s facilities and features are captivating. With 4,000 sqm of common area, its units face landscaped gardens and a super-sized swimming pool running from one end of the estate to the other. The development’s eightfloor low-rise buildings bear a romantic Spanish Colonial design for exteriors and interiors. The facade, marked by curved arches and an airy layout, accentuates the natural setting while providing practical and transitional spaces between the indoor and outdoor living. The property’s buildings bear a romantic Spanish Colonial design, marked by curved arches and an airy layout. Prices at La Casita start at below 2.2 million baht (S$92,378) for their one-bedroom unit (subject to availability). Unit sizes range from 26.5 to 37.5 sqm for a one-bedroom unit and 48.25 to 91 sqm for two-bedroom units. Property investors seeking returns on their units can join the Hostmaker programme, a technology-driven hospitality management company that takes the hassle out of managing short-term rentals. It offers a consistent, high-quality service and operates in London, Paris, Rome and Barcelona. Optimism is returning to Thailand’s property market after a two-year consolidation period, said international real estate analysts in a recent report by CB Richard Ellis (CBRE), Bangkok Real Estate Market Outlook 2018 published on March 7, 2018. The report also said that buyers were starting to book units again in anticipation of increasing prices. The rise in confidence is due to the buoyant Thai economy, which grew 3.9 per cent last year, exceeding expectations. Some sectors fared even better, with exports surging 7 per cent and tourism jumping 25 per cent.

Renewed spending by Thai and overseas buyers can be seen in the real estate market. At the same time, foreign investment in property grew more than tenfold, from just four projects in 2013 to 52 this year. Such trends show that Thai properties possess better value and greater upside potential in the Asia region and that for many real estate investors, Thailand is the preferred destination after Hong Kong and Singapore. Apart from relatively modest prices, the return of political stability is also attracting Japanese and mainland Chinese players. Furthermore, Thailand’s real estate regulations are clear and consistent. Foreign investors are protected and can be legal owners of freehold condominiums, comprising up to 49 per cent of one project. In leasehold purchases, there is no limit.
The upturn in the property cycle comes on the back of record land prices this year. A remarkable price of 69,767 baht (S$2,928) per sq. ft. (psf) transaction in Soi Lang Suan and 51,162 baht (S$2,147) psf purchase for the British Embassy grounds on Wireless Road are evidence of a good appetite for prime Thai real estate. As Bangkok registers brisk take-up rates, the rising prices are expected to have a spill-over effect on key townships, especially in nearby Hua Hin, a popular seaside enclave just a two-hour drive from Bangkok. Property investors are drawn to strong returns from rentals, which yield an average 6 per cent a year. Higher quality accommodations command premium prices. program are typically focused on capital appreciation and investment returns, but also expect to spend time in Hua Hin and stay in a facility that provides full service luxury and convenience at accessible prices.” The key investment and financial aspects of this program are: 1. Five‐year rental yield guarantee of 7% per annum for the first three years, and then a further 5% per annum for the next two years. 2. Rental yield payments are made
each quarter commencing after the Apartment Unit is paid in full. 3. The lifestyle benefits of buying at Sansara are plentiful as their facilities will best most 5 star hotels. In fact they have actually hired a former GM of several 5 starts hotels, Hans Van Steertegem, to oversee the operations and to make sure owners truly live a 5 star experience. According to Hans, “Sansara is a unique place to live. The location is one of the most desirable in Hua Hin and generally regarded as one of the best places to be out of town. The build quality is first class and should be seen to be believed. My focus has been on developing the community activities and hospitality services that Sansara has and ensuring our team is trained to the very highest standard. We are here to support our residents and ensure Sansara is a place in which you can live the life you love.” As an investment owner you will enjoy 4 weeks per year at Sansara, two in the high season and two in the low.
